Spotify launches personalized AI playlists that you can build using prompts

journey generations spotify

Spotify already found success with its popular AI DJ feature , and now the streaming music service is bringing AI to playlist creation. The company on Monday introduced into beta a new option called AI playlists, which allows users to generate a playlist based on written prompts.

The feature will initially become available on Android and iOS devices in the U.K. and Australia and will evolve over time.

In addition to more standard playlist creation requests, like those based on genre or time frame, Spotify’s use of AI means people could ask for a wider variety of custom playlists, like “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse,” Spotify suggests. Prompts can reference all sorts of things, like places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors or emojis. The company notes that the best playlists are generated using prompts that contain a combination of genres, moods, artists and decades, however.

Spotify also leverages its understanding of users’ tastes to customize the playlists it makes with the feature.

After the playlist is generated, users can then use the AI to revise and refine the end result by issuing commands like “less upbeat” or “more pop,” for example. Users can also swipe left on any songs to remove them from the playlist.

In terms of the technology, Spotify says it’s using large language models (LLMs) to understand the user’s intent. Then, Spotify uses its personalization technology — the information it has about the listener’s history and preferences — to fulfill the prompt and create a personalized AI-generated playlist for the user.

The company uses a range of third-party tools for its AI and machine learning experiences.

TechCrunch first reported in October 2023 that Spotify was developing AI playlists, when reverse engineers Chris Messina and Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots of code from Spotify’s app that referred to AI playlists that were “based on your prompts.”

Spotify at the time declined to comment on the finding, saying it would not offer a statement on possible new features. However, in December 2023, the company confirmed that it was testing AI-driven playlist creation after a TikTok video of the feature surfaced showing what the Spotify user described as “Spotify’s ChatGPT.”

The feature is found in the “Your Library” tab in Spotify’s app by tapping on the plus button (+) at the top right of the screen. A pop-up menu appears showing the AI Playlist as a new option alongside the existing “Playlist” and “Blend” options.

If a listener can’t think of any prompts to try, Spotify offers prompt suggestions to help people get started, like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica,” “fill in the silence with background café music,” “get pumped up with fun, upbeat, and positive songs” or “explore a niche genre like Witch House” and many others.

To save an AI playlist, tap the “Create” button to add it to the library.

The company notes the AI has guardrails around it so it will not respond to offensive prompts or those focused on current events or specific brands.

Spotify has been investing in AI technology to improve its streaming service for many months. With the launch of AI DJ, which expanded globally last year , the company used a combination of Sonantic and OpenAI technology to create an artificial version of the voice of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan, who introduces personalized song selections to the user. Last year, Spotify said it was investing in in-house research to better understand the latest in AI and large language models.

CEO Daniel Ek has also teased to investors other ways Spotify could leverage AI, including by summarizing podcasts, creating AI-generated audio ads and more. The company has also looked into using AI tech that would clone a podcast host’s voice for host-read ads .

Ahead of AI playlists, Spotify launched a similar feature, Niche Mixes , that allowed users to create personalized playlists using prompts, but the product did not leverage AI technology and was more limited in terms of its language understanding.

AAPL Company

Eu investigating apple’s response to spotify complaint [u].

Avatar for Ben Lovejoy

The European Union is investigating Apple’s response to a Spotify complaint, to determine whether the anti-steering changes made by the Cupertino company are sufficient to comply.

Update: GamesFray had suggested that this amounted to a fourth DMA non-compliance investigation into Apple, but it’s now my understanding that they have misinterpreted remarks made by a regulatory risk company …

What you need to know about Apple and the DMA

Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires tech giants to ensure that they are not using a dominant market position to give their own products and services an unfair advantage over competing ones.

The first step in the process was to decide which companies qualified as “gatekeepers” under the law – that is, companies whose power was enough to effectively harm competitors. Apple was found to be a gatekeeper in terms of the App Store , as there was no other way for a developer to sell iPhone apps. That meant the company was obliged to make policy changes to comply with the DMA.

Apple announced that  it would allow third-party app stores , but with a mass of asterisks. These included charging a Core Technology Fee for any app sold outside of its own App Store,  which could potentially bankrupt small developers .

We said at the time that  these proposals were not going to satisfy the EU , and that was soon confirmed . The European Commission initially announced that it was not satisfied with two of Apple’s responses to the new law, later adding a third.

Apple under three DMA non-compliance investigations

Apple is currently under three DMA non-compliance investigations:

  • App Store anti-steering policies (see following section)
  • Alternative app store fee structure, including the Core Technology Fee (CTF)
  • Web browser choice screen, during iPhone setup

These investigations may take up to a year, before the EU determines whether or not Apple has complied with the law.

So what’s going on now?

Spotify has long complained that Apple’s App Store policies created an uneven playing field between its app and Apple Music.

Specifically, Apple Music allows in-app sign-up to a paid subscription, and Apple doesn’t have to pay a cut of this to, well, Apple. Spotify, in contrast, would have to pay 30% to Apple, meaning that it cannot compete on equal terms.

Additionally, Apple didn’t allow Spotify to escape this by steering users to its website, to subscribe there instead. It couldn’t link to the website, and couldn’t even specifically tell users that’s where they needed to go to subscribe. (Hence this is known as an anti-steering policy.)

Spotify complained about this back in 2019, and just last month Apple was found guilty of anti-competitive behavior under an older antitrust law. The company was fined €1.8B (roughly $2B). Apple wasn’t happy with this, and has appealed. However, it subsequently loosened its anti-steering policy to comply with this ruling.

Spotify remains unhappy with Apple’s response, and the EU is investigating.

Spotify says Apple can now be fined

Lewis Crofts, editor-at-large of regulatory risk service MLEX, noted Spotify’s allegation that Apple’s changes are insufficient to comply with the DMA.

. @Apple has updated its terms for music apps to point their customers to purchases outside the App Store. It's part of the compliance with EC #antitrust case in March. @Spotify thinks it is not enough & wants @vestager to open a non-compliance case. https://t.co/pzLvEExVUp — Lewis Crofts (@lewis_crofts) April 7, 2024

He subsequently confirmed that the EU is investigating:

Update: @EU_Commission says "We are currently assessing whether Apple has fully complied with the decision." — Lewis Crofts (@lewis_crofts) April 7, 2024

GamesFray interpreted this to mean that a fourth DMA investigation has been opened, but my understanding now is that it has misinterpreted Croft’s remarks.

Spotify claims Apple can be fined now

Spotify has suggested that Apple is not in compliance with the DMA, and could be fined from Saturday – the day after Apple announced changes to its policy.

However, app developer and intellectual property activist Florian Müller suggested that Spotify was on shakey ground here. The reason is that the streaming music giant had deliberately filed its complaint in very narrow terms, reasoning that the more specific the charge against Apple, the more likely the iPhone maker would be found guilty.

Müller expressed the view that this excluded a ruling on Apple’s fees , and Crofts agreed.

When I saw the new rules, I actually wrote that Apple must have rejected Spotify's recent submission. I don't always agree with Apple, but I've been watching them for long enough that I'm sure the EU ruling does not prevent them from charging. After all, that case got shrunk. — Florian Mueller (@Florian4Gamers) April 7, 2024

So the situation appears to be that the existing investigation into the CTF continues.

One thing’s for sure: these matters will take years to be resolved. The EU has said it may take up to a year to make its rulings, and if Apple is found guilty for any or all of it, the company will for sure appeal, setting us up for literally years of court battles.

Spotify Goes A Step Further On Its AI Journey

Spotify Technology S.A. SPOT continues to integrate AI into its music streaming offerings. On Friday, Apple Inc AAPL announced changes that should benefit Spotify and other streaming apps as it will now inform users of other ways to purchase digital services on its App Store. This change came as result the $1.99 billion fine Apple was charged by the EU for thwarting competition from music streaming rivals through its Apple Store restrictions.

Apple Has Some Catching Up To Do

Perhaps not the greatest rivalry of all time, but the Apple Music and Spotify rivalry is undoubtedly among the music streaming industry’s greats. Spotify has been around for longer than Apple Music. Yet, Apple made an impressive digital music footprint and used its iPhone power to make things trickier for Spotify. By the looks of it, the EU regulators have put an end to those days. Strangely, Apple has been late in in infusing AI to enhance its offerings. While Apple has been keeping quiet on AI, it did add personalized recommendations last year, back when Spotify expanded its AI DJ. Generative AI has quickly grown to become much more than a simple buzzword, so Apple cannot afford to take a back seat but it’s nature has always been about being secretive- only time will show how it intends to infuse it across its offerings.

Meanwhile, Spotify Continues Its Generative AI Journey

Last February, Spotify launched its AI-powered DJ feature. Six months after the North America and Canada debut, it expanded it to dozens of markets across the globe. An English-speaking personalized radio DJ has been a success. Now, Spotify took the next step by launching personalized AI playlists that one can build using written prompts. Moreover, besides allowing users to specify their musical wishes beyond the genre with prompts referencing a range of things, from moods to movie characters, activities, and so on, AI can be used to further refine the result after the list is generated. At first, the feature will be available to U.K. and Australia.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has also offered many teasers of ways the music streaming company can exploit AI, such as by summarizing podcasts and creating AI-generated audio ads. With AI-powered capabilities, Spotify can personalize its offerings like never before while also gaining the ability to become more efficient such as by significantly lowering the cost that it takes for advertisers to develop new ad formats. In simple words, the DJ feature was merely the beginning of Spotify’s AI journey.

Smucker's 5th-generation CEO said he had to earn his role — and his kids will, too

  • Mark Smucker, the CEO of J. M. Smucker Company, said the company is a meritocracy.
  • Smucker, a fifth-generation leader, worked outside the company and got a graduate degree before joining.
  • Family members must work outside the company and preferably hold a graduate degree.

Insider Today

There are apparently no nepo babies at Smucker's. The CEO said he had to earn his seat and that his $12.3 billion company has rules in place to make sure family members get the right training before they come on board.

Mark Smucker is a fifth-generation leader at the Orville, Ohio-based J. M. Smucker, best known for its iconic Uncrustable sandwiches , Smucker's jam, and Jif peanut butter.

Smucker, 53, took over the CEO role from his uncle in 2016. In an interview with Fortune published Monday, he said he had to prove himself and earn a seat at the company's 128-year-old table.

"Being a family-run business provides cultural strength and a competitive advantage," he said. "J.M. Smucker is a meritocracy, and my journey here took a lot of twists and turns."

The CEO said he was not always keen to join the family business as a child. After college at William & Mary, he spent two years teaching eighth-grade science in Alabama. He later moved to Argentina to work in advertising for a year, his LinkedIn profile shows.

In between the two jobs, he pursued a management degree at Arizona State University's business school.

Related stories

He joined the family business in Argentina and led Smucker's development in South America, before moving to various divisions in the US during his 26 years at the company.

"As a family, we have rules," Smucker said. "One is that you've got to work outside the company no matter what. We prefer family members to also have a graduate degree. And definitely they need to have outside experience."

His remarks to Fortune echoed similar sentiments from his uncle Richard, who was CEO or co-CEO from 2001 to 2016. Richard Smucker said external experience "broadens their skill level and they bring back things to the company that we wouldn't see if they were at the company from the start."

Current chief Mark Smucker told Fortune that his two children will be subject to the same rules if they choose to join the company, which has about 6,000 employees globally.

"I want my kids to pursue their hopes and dreams, and if they are truly interested in this, I will help them enter the workforce and learn," he said.

J. M. Smucker is part of a small list of global firms with multi-generational succession. Among others is Danish toymaker Lego, whose current CEO Thomas Kirk is a fourth-generation business leader.

Many family-run companies are unable to make it to fourth and fifth generations because of a lack of succession planning. Just over 60% of US family businesses did not have a formal succession plan in place last year, according to a report from private-equity firm Brightstar Capital Partners.

In 2022, a New York Magazine cover story about Hollywood's so-called "nepo babies" launched the word into common use as shorthand to describe people who break into an industry on the heels of their parents' success.
