Who is the new ‘kid’ on the Korn Ferry Tour? We found out

Miles Russell tips his cap on the 18th green during the final round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic on Sunday in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Getty Images

ARLINGTON, Texas – Miles Russell, the 15-year-old golf whiz kid, made headlines on the Korn Ferry Tour last week — the youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut and record a top-20 finish — but when he arrived at the Veritex Bank Championship Korn Ferry event this week, he was undone by the twin challenges of securing a rental car and locking up a housing arrangement.

“It’s good he needs me for that; they certainly don’t need me for golf,” joked his dad, Joe Russell, a Florida senior living developer, who is here this week along with caddie and longtime instructor Ramon Bescansa.

Of course, dad picked up the check for a Tuesday night dinner at a local Pappadeaux, but other than that, he was resigned to applying sunshine on the range while his son and Bescansa honed their craft next to other players, some more than twice the teen’s age.

Miles Russell, a high school freshman, finished T20 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, and the top-25 finish qualified him for this week, his second Korn Ferry Tour event. He tees off at 2:43 p.m. local. A surprise? Maybe. But Russell’s list of accomplishments are longer than his slightly built 5-foot-7 frame.

The AJGA’s top-ranked junior, he broke Tiger Woods’ record as the youngest player ever to win AJGA Player of the Year and was the youngest ever to win the Junior Players Championship. He captured the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots, played in the Junior Ryder Cup and was named to the first USGA Junior National team. And don’t forget his 17 Florida Junior Golf Tournament wins and upcoming PGA Tour exemption for the fall Bermuda tournament.

Although there’s still room for improvement — at least in some areas.

“I got to get better (with autographs),” he said. “I’ve got to get a lot faster.”

With his bulky TaylorMade staff bag (with his name on it) an NIL deal and promising future, he seems like the typical modern junior golfer, although he’s old school in the fact that he refuses to wear ear buds when he warms up.

“I prefer to hear the sound of the ball coming off the club,” he said.

Several putters from the 2024 Ping putter line arranged on a golf course

Ping adds 6 new designs to 2024 putter line: Everything you need to know

Both his PGA Tournament mentor, Steve Wheatcroft, who was a member at Russell’s home course, Atlantic Beach Country Club, and Bescansa, have emphasized that no matter how bright his future is, there will be struggles along the way. Wheatcroft also taught him something that could come in handy down the road — the art of trash talk and money games.

“Weathie!” Russell said, when thinking about their sessions together. “He took some money from me and then it turned around and I took some from him.”

Added Atlantic Beach head golf pro Richard Podwalski: “Steve would dog him and trash him and make him tougher. That was his job and he did it well.”

Around Atlantic Beach, Russell’s already made a name for himself.

There was the albatross on the par-5 6th hole last summer, where he holed a 5-wood from 239 yards, only the second in recent club history. (“He was too young to buy drinks after that, so we gave him a piece of framed artwork,” Podwalski said.) He’s already shot 29 multiple times on the front nine of the par-72 course; his low is 62, and Podwalski says 59 isn’t unrealistic. And of course, they’re still talking about his shot during the annual Black Friday shootout last November.

Russell put his tee ball on the 9th directly behind a tree in the right rough, just six inches from the tree roots. No matter. He opened a 3-iron, sent the ball skyward around the tree, curved it and landed it right next to the green. The gallery was stunned; Tour players Doc Redman and Vince Covello shook their heads in amazement.

“I’ve been playing tournament golf for 30 years,” Covello said, “and that’s the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.”

It’s not uncommon to see Russell practicing alone in a bunker for hours or chipping off the cart path. Joe Russell quit playing against his son long ago, but his final match was a memorable one.

“It was the year Tiger and Phil played in The Match on TV, and we decided to have our own match as well,” he said. “He went back to the back tees (at age 11) and he beat me by 10 shots. I said that’s it, I’m done.”

Russell has even learned how to turn a rare disappointment into a positive. In 2016, he shot a six-under 30 in a U.S. Kids regional event, only to lose by a single shot to good friend Graden Lomax, who shot 29. But instead of getting bitter and losing a friendship, he got better, forming the Florida Sunshine Cup with Lomax, where elite junior players come together for a day of fundraising for local charities, including the Nicklaus Family Children’s Hospital, which has raised $300,00 in the last five years.

“It started as a dream, but it has turned out great,” Joe Russell said.

A lot like his first Korn Ferry Tour start.

Korn Ferry Tour Player Shoots 13-under 58 in Texas

Frankie Capan III fired the third sub-60 score of the season on the Korn Ferry Tour.

  • Author: John Schwarb

There’s a new member of the sub-60 club in pro golf, on a tour that has seen a couple already this season.

Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58 on Thursday at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in the first round of the Veritex Bank Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour. He made four birdies in a row from the 2nd through 5th holes, then hung red numbers on eight straight holes from the 9th through 16th. In all he had 11 birdies and one eagle.

Capan parred his final two holes including the par-5 18th.

The Korn Ferry Tour had two sub-60 scores earlier this year at the Astara Golf Championship, as Cristobal Del Solar shot 57 and Aldrich Potgieter shot 59 on a par-70, 6,254-yard course at elevation in Colombia. Capan shot his 58 on a par-71, 7,010-yard course.

There has been one 58 shot on the PGA Tour, by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Capan, 24, turned pro two years ago and attended Florida Gulf Coast University. The Minnesota native 298th in the OWGR with a high finish of third in 30 career KFT starts.

Capan led by three in the morning wave. Trent Phillips shot 61 and trailed by three.

Cristobal Del Solar shoots 57 (!) in Korn Ferry Tour event

1995601035

Hector Vivas

The name Cristobal Del Solar might not be familiar to many golf fans, but after Thursday's performance, he'll be more known by his new title: Mr. 57.

The 30-year-old Chilean fired a 57 to set a new record for the lowest-ever score in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. Del Solar's 13-under-par round came on Day 1 of the Korn Ferry Tour's Astara Golf Championship.

RELATED: Lucas Glover WDs from WM Phoenix Open after messing up tee time

Check out this crazy scorecard that included two eagles, 14 3s or better and zero 5s:

Now that is golfing your ball, folks.

OK, now to a couple points of clarification. Del Solar's round came at the Pacos Course, the easier of the two courses being used at the Country Club of Bogota in Colombia. And in addition to it being a par 70, it also was playing at 6,254 yards, which is very short for men's pro golf. And it played even shorter considering the course is located nearly 9,000 feet abolve sea level.

In fact, Golf Channel's Brentley Romine tracked down Del Solar after to get a blow-by-blow of his historic round, and you can really see how short these holes were playing for him:

That being said, the guy shot 57. And no one else has ever shot in the 50s at that course. Last year, the Pacos Course ranked as the 17th-hardest course on the Korn Ferry Tour with a 68.526 scoring average. So a 57 is still 11.5 shots better than that.

And he came this close to shooting 56(!):

Barely a reaction from him after tapping in for history. Crazy.

Jim Furyk on the PGA Tour (2016 Travelers Championship) and Stephen Jaeger on the Korn Ferry Tour (2016 Ellie Mae Classic) previously held the record for lowest rounds in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with 58. Also of note, Rhein Gibson, the man the Guinness Book of World Records credits with the lowest score ever (55), is in this week's Astara Golf Championship field as the defending champ.

RELATED: Phil Mickelson makes wild hole-in-one claim in LIV Golf media guide

Upon finishing his first round, Del Solar led a group of players at eight under by five shots. Del Solar is in his second full season on the Korn Ferry Tour after finishing 52nd on the money list in 2023. And he's off to a nice start to 2024 with a career-best fourth-place finish at last month's season opener in the Bahamas.

His round also continued quite a week for Chilean golf. Last Friday Joaquin Niemann shot 59 in Mayakoba, then won his first LIV Golf title on Sunday. Del Solar is hoping for a similar finish in Colombia this week.

McIlroy and Lowry team up for New Orleans victory. Green repeats on LPGA Tour

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event Sunday, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

Trainer pushed a 6-foot par putt to the right of the cup to end it, with Lowry and McIlroy sharing a smiling embrace on the green.

The 34-year-old McIlroy, playing in the event for the first time, won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season. Lowry claimed his third PGA Tour victory. The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

Ramey and Trainer began the day tied for 27th and shot to the top of the leaderboard with nine birdies between the seventh and 18th holes. They tied the alternate-shot tournament record of 63, but then had to wait nearly three hours to see if their lead would stand up.

They struggled to execute on the playoff hole. Trainer pulled his drive into the left rough, Ramey also yanked his approach left off the cart path and into the wall below the suites around the 18th green. Trainer then chipped short before Ramey finally got onto the green.

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard missed the playoff by one shot when Brehm’s birdie putt from the fringe narrowly missed to the right. Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair, the 54-hole leaders, were tied for the lead until failing to birdie the par-5 16th and taking double bogey on the par-3 17th.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hannah Green closed with a 5-under 66 and won the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at Wilshire Country Club.

A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green took the drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.

Green began the key run with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th and made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. Then, after Stark bogeyed the par-4 16th two groups ahead, Green ran in a 25-footer for eagle from the fringe on 15 to open a four-stroke lead, and she made it 5 under in five holes with a birdie on 16.

Stark birdied her last two holes for a 68. The 24-year-old Swede also finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year.

Grace Kim, four strokes ahead entering the weekend, closed 76-77 without making a birdie the last two days. She tied for 25th.

LIV GOLF LEAGUE

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Brendan Steele closed with a 4-under 68 to hold off Louis Oosthuizen and win LIV Golf Adelaide by one shot at The Grange Golf Club.

The 41-year-old Steele finished with a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 for his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen (65) and former previous Masters champions Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

Schwartzel and Rahm were among a group of five players at 16-under 200, with Joaquin Niemann (66), Andy Ogletree (65) and Dean Burmester (67) in a tie for third.

Defending champion Talor Gooch shot 70 and finished in a tie for 26th at 10-under.

Australia-based Ripper won the team title on the second playoff hole against South African-based Stingers.

EUROPEAN TOUR AND JAPAN GOLF TOUR

GOTEMBA, Japan (AP) — Yuto Katsuragawa began the back nine with five birdies in seven holes that carried him to a 7-under 63 and a three-shot victory in the ISPS Handa Championship, the third Japanese player this year to claim a European tour title.

The tournament was co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour. Katsuragawa follows Rikuya Hoshino at the Commercial Qatar Masters and Keita Nakajima in the Hero Indian Open for Japanese winners. A year ago, Ryo Hisatsune won the French Open.

Katsuragawa started the final round three shots out of the lead, but got into the mix when 54-hole leader Casey Jarvis and Yannik Paul faltered on the front nine. The 25-year-old pulled away and won by three over Sebastian Soderberg, who had a 67.

Jarvis closed with a 74 to tie for 18th. Paul, who started one shot behind, shot 76. It was a missed opportunity for Paul, in the mix for the second and final spot for Germany in the Olympics.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday with a successful title defense in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, closing with a 5-under 67 for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.

A stroke behind Paul Broadhurst after matching the tournament record Saturday with a 64, Ames had two eagles in the final round. He won by four strokes, finishing at 14-under 202 at TPC Sugarloaf for his record third victory in the event.

Broadhurst, the 58-year-old Englishman coming off a victory last week in the Invited Celebrity Classic, closed with a 72 to tie for second with Doug Barron (69). K.J. Choi (70) and Steven Alker (71) were 9 under.

Ames became the first multiple winner this year on the tour, also taking the Chubb Classic in February. He has six victories in his last 29 starts after winning twice in his first 175 — the first at TPC Sugarloaf in 2017 — on the 50-and-over tour.

KORN FERRY TOUR

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tim Widing of Sweden won for the second straight week on the Korn Ferry Tour, closing with an 8-under 63 to cap off a week of low scoring with a four-shot victory in the Veritex Bank Championship.

The week began with Frankie Capan III posting a 58 for the third sub-60 round on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. It ended with Widing’s worst score of the week a 65 on Saturday.

He finished at 31-under 253 to boost his position atop the Korn Ferry Tour points list as he closes in on a PGA Tour card.

Myles Creighton of Canada closed with a 62 to finish second, followed by Trent Phillips (65). Capan wound up seven shots behind in fourth place. None of the Korn Ferry Tour players who broke 60 this year have gone on to win.

Former Alabama golfer shoots round of 58 on Korn Ferry Tour

Former Alabama golfer Frankie Capan III tied the lowest score in relation to par in the history of the Korn Ferry Tour on Thursday when he carded a 58 in the first round of the Veritex Bank Championship.

Texas Rangers Golf Club is a par-71 layout, giving Capan an opening-round score of 13-under par in the Arlington, Texas, tournament.

Capan’s round broke neatly into a 29 on the front nine and a 29 on the back nine to give the golfer the 13th sub-60 score in the history of the Korn Ferry Tour.

The Korn Ferry Tour is the top development circuit for the PGA Tour.

Capan made the turn on Thursday at 6 under after he ran off birdies on the second, third, fourth and fifth holes, then eagled the par-5 ninth. On the back nine, Capan recorded seven birdies, and he did so consecutively on 10 through 16 before closing with a pair of pars.

Capan’s round broke the course record held by Scottie Scheffler, who is the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world and the winner of the Masters earlier this month.

Capan played at Alabama in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons before transferring to Florida Gulf Coast to complete his college career.

The 24-year-old entered this week’s tournament ranked 30th on the Korn Ferry Tour points list. The top-30 golfers on the Korn Ferry Tour this season will earn PGA Tour cards for next season.
