Lexington is a small town in central North Carolina, about twenty miles south of Winston-Salem . Lexington was settled as early as 1775 and has had many claims to fame throughout its long history. 

Many came to Lexington throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as the furniture and textile industry made its hold on the town. Lexington preserves its history fondly, but a few new things bring visitors here today.

Today, in the 21st century, barbecue, wineries , and a NASCAR presence are a few noteworthy contributions from Lexington. Local events include those dedicated to barbecue , history, and the arts.

1 . Davidson County Historical Museum

Address: 2 S Main Street, Lexington, NC 27292 

The Davidson County Historical Museum is the best place to learn about Lexington and its history. The building is in the heart of Lexington’s historic district downtown, inside the Old Davidson County Courthouse.

This courthouse is one of the few historic properties in the county that are open to the public. The museum is free to visit and has many rotating exhibits and a permanent collection of artifacts. 

2. Finch Park

Address: 15 Paul Buck Road, Lexington, NC, 27292

Lexington has many parks, and Finch Park is a local favorite. There are two beautiful playgrounds, 1.25 miles of walking trails by the lake , three picnic shelters, softball fields, basketball courts, a theatre that hosts live music, and fishing access.

Finch Park is the location for two major town events, The Multi-Cultural Festival and the Fantastic Fourth of July Festival . 

3. Grimes Park

Address: 25 Hege Drive, Lexington, NC, 27292

Grimes Park is slightly smaller than Finch Park but has fun activities and a relaxing half-mile park stroll. There is a large open lawn area, great for picnics, a tennis court, a small playground, and a gazebo. This park is often less crowded than others, so if you want to enjoy a peaceful afternoon, consider Grimes Park. 

4. The Bob Timberlake Gallery

Address: 1714 E Center St Ext, Lexington, NC 27292

Bob Timberlake was once an internationally acclaimed realist painter who made his home in Lexington, NC. Not only was his work featured in magazines and newspapers, but he even drew four stamps for the United States Postal Service . 

The gallery, located in Timberlake’s old home, invites guests to see the world of Bob Timberlake. Exhibits include lots of his original work, reproductions, and personal memorabilia. 

5. Boone’s Cave Park

Address: 3552 Boones Cave Rd, Lexington, NC 27295

Boone’s Cave Park is a 110-acre park named after the American Pioneer Daniel Boone. Forty-six acres of the park are designated as a Natural Heritage Site and hold several wildflowers only found in the Appalachian Mountains. 

There is a lot of wildlife to be seen at this park, and it is a great place to spend the day or even the weekend. There are many hiking/walking trails, a disc golf course, fishing access, kayak/canoe launches, picnic shelters, a playground, and four primitive camping sites. 

6. Richard Childress Racing Museum & Gift Shop

Address: 425 Industrial Dr building #468, Welcome, NC 27295

Richard Childress is a former NASCAR driver who went on to start his own race team, Richard Childress Racing. The late great Dale Earnhardt started driving for RCR in the 1980s, and together, they had one of the most successful NASCAR teams in the history of the sport. His legacy in the NASCAR world has become a big part of Lexington.

His museum is a collection of winning stock racing cars on a 52-acre vehicle manufacturing campus. The gift store has all kinds of apparel, hats, trinkets, and souvenirs. 

7. Denton Farm Park

Address: 1072 Cranford Rd, Denton, NC 27239

Denton Farm Park is a privately owned, family-run park outside Lexington. There are 15 restored historic buildings, a full-sized train on a one-and-a-half-mile track, and a large campground with 500 campsites.

This place is popular for live music, small festivals, antique shows, and more. Check their website for a full calendar with all their events. 

8. Elevated Wake Park

Address: 220 Bryant Rd, Lexington, NC 27292

Elevated Wake Park is the first full-size cable park in the Piedmont Triad Area. For those who love wakeboarding or have never gone before and want to try, this is an excellent place for people at all levels. 

There is also a fun floating playground at the aqua park. You can sign up for lessons, take out rentals, have a birthday party, hang out at the bar & grill, and lots more! The whole family will have a blast. 

9. High Rock Lake

Address: Davidson/ Rowan Counties 

High Rock Lake is the northernmost lake of the Uwharrie Lakes and the second largest manmade lake in North Carolina . High Rock Lake is a full-service lake, meaning you can enjoy swimming, boating, paddling, water sports, and fishing.

The lake has everything from lakefront camping to cabins and a marina with boat rentals. 

10. The Candy Factory

Conrad & Hinkle has been the staple grocery store and meat market in town since 1919, and even with renovations, the original tin ceiling and concrete floors are still there today. The Smoke and Oak is a classic bourbon and cigar lounge, like the kind you rarely see anymore. It is a private lounge, costing just $5 for an annual membership. However, once a member, you can access a vast selection of premium cigars and bourbons.

Bull City Ciderworks is an all-organic, 100% real fruit juice hard cider company with multiple locations across North Carolina. Located right off the main street of Lexington, this venue is quite large, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. 

They have 16 ciders on tap, board games for the whole family, and yard games. Community events and live music frequently happen all year long. Dogs and kids are very welcome! You are also welcome to bring your food, but they provide a few light snacks and mocktails. 

14. Goose and the Monkey Brew House

Address: 401 S Railroad St, Lexington, NC 27292 

Goose and the Monkey Brew House is a large and diverse brew house serving all kinds of unique handcrafted beer . They also have a great selection of locally crafted wines, champagnes, and a full coffee bar. This big warehouse-style brew house is the perfect place to bring the family, have a casual, relaxing evening, and try great drinks. 

On top of their extensive drink menu, they have created Pour Folk Provisions Co., a unique craft-dining experience inspired by their food truck. The menu is a fun selection of shareable plates, sandwiches, and signature flatbreads. 

Lexington NC Wineries 

Lexington sits right at the southern section of Yadkin Valley, a valley highly renowned for being one of the best wine-growing regions on the East Coast. There are over 45 wineries in Yadkin Valley , and a handful are in and around Lexington. Let’s explore!

🍷 Southern Gateway Wine Trail

There are many wine trails/tours throughout Yadkin Valley, and this one is specific for the wineries based in Lexington. The Southern Gateway Wine Trail follows the 15 miles of serene wine country and the wineries within it. This trail also pairs beautifully with the Historic Barbecue Trail (see below).

🍷 Childress Vineyards Address: 1000 Childress Vineyards Rd, Lexington, NC 27295

Childress Vineyards is owned and operated by Lexington’s finest, Richard Childress, of NASCAR fame. The winery and restaurant are gorgeous establishments with an art-deco style.

The outdoor lawn and patio area is something out of a fairytale, with green grasses, twinkling lights, and a fire pit. Tours are available, and you are highly encouraged to see the vineyard and how their fantastic wines are made. 

🍷 Junius Lindsay Vineyard Address: 385 Dr. Zimmerman Rd, Lexington, NC 27295

Junius Lindsay Vineyard is well-known in the area for being the only winery with an open-air tasting room so guests can enjoy their wine while fully soaking in the breathtaking views.

Their critically acclaimed wines are made with grapes native to the Rhone Valley of Southern France. The soil and growing conditions present here in the Yadkin Valley allow Junius Lindsay to successfully produce varietals from that area.

🍷 Weathervane Winery Address: 1452 Welcome-Arcadia Rd, Lexington, NC 27295

If you are craving a fun and comfortable wine-tasting experience in Lexington, then you will be delighted with Weathervane Winery. Each staff member truly cares about the wine, and they are excited to share that passion. At Weathervane Winery, they hold lots of live events, and they also have a serene wedding/private party venue.

Native Vine Winery is a great place for casual wine tasting, but it is also a place of class and style. They have an extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff who happily guide you through your wine-tasting journey. This is also a great place for entertainment and events. They also have a beautiful space for weddings and private parties.

Since 2001, Curran Alexander Vineyards has been producing premium wine grapes on their gorgeous North Carolina property. The farm has been in the family for over 150 years, and the owners take pride in sharing their family history with the country. Guests are welcome to walk around the property at their leisure or book a tour for a more in-depth look at winemaking.  

Lexington, NC Barbeque 

Lexington, NC, considers itself the “barbecue capital of the world.” It all began in 1919 when Sid Weaver set up the first barbecue tent in town. Since then, the barbecue world has flourished. Lexington-style barbeque (also called Piedmont or Western style) focuses on pork shoulder with a red sauce or “dip” that typically has a vinegar base, tomatoes, and red pepper flakes.

Today, more than 15 barbecue restaurants in Lexington alone all serve their own twist on exciting barbecue flavors. No one does barbecue quite like Lexington, and here are some of the best barbecue spots in town.

Barbecue Center (or BAR-B-Q CENTER as their iconic sign is spelled) is the oldest barbecue establishment in downtown Lexington. This family-run diner has been featured in magazines and shows throughout the ages as a place you don’t want to miss. All the barbecue is made to order, so each customer gets exactly the kind of barbecue they desire.

Speedy’s is another Lexington classic, having been around since 1970. Always a family-owned and operated business, the Dunn family takes great pride in serving the community the best quality foods with amazing service. Speedy Lohr’s BBQ is a Lexington classic barbecue joint. If you are looking for somewhere to start in the barbecue world of Lexington, start with Speedy’s. Their food is simple. However, it’s cooked with perfection and gives visitors exactly what they want out of the perfect barbeque meal. 

🐷 BackCountry Barbeque Address: 4014 Linwood-Southmont Rd, Lexington, NC 27295

Ranked one of the best barbecue places in Lexington, BackCountry Barbeque may look like a simple cafeteria-style restaurant, but their flavors will blow you away.

All of their food is cooked over wood coals, mainly hickory (a classic Lexington flavor), which gives the barbecue that extra pop of flavor. Plus, barbecue isn’t the only thing they specialize in. They have a large menu with classic Southern-style dishes, seafood, and sides.

Just outside downtown Lexington, Kerley’s Barbeque sits in an old brick building. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with great quality and great prices. You can’t beat their large servings and their daily specials. 

Annual Events in Lexington NC 

Lexington has a strong community, and with a strong community comes many annual events and festivals. 

✅ Barbecue Festival Address: Historic Uptown Lexington on Main Street, between 4th street and 5th avenue

Since the early 1980s, the Barbecue Festival has been the talk of the town and everyone’s favorite event of the year. It was named one of the “Top Ten Food Festivals in America” by Food & Leisure magazine. Over the years, it has been recorded that more than 200,000 people have shown up to celebrate barbecue, and more than 11,000 pounds of barbecue served. 

This festival celebrates Lexington’s history in the barbecue world so everyone can share their love for delicious barbecue together. The festival usually takes place at the end of October. This year, the 39th Barbecue Fest will take place on October 26, 2024.

There will be live music, a kid’s zone, dinosaur shows, k-9 trick shows, BMX stunt shows, many vendors, and, of course, some of the best Lexington-style barbecue you’ll ever try in your life. 

✅ The Multi-Cultural Festival Address: Davidson County Fairgrounds, 400 Greensboro St Ext, Lexington, NC 

The Multi-Cultural Festival takes place at the beginning of May; dates have not been announced yet for 2024. This festival is a whole day for celebrating cultures from around the world with traditional food and clothing, live music, performances, exhibits, and more. 

The focus is on African-American, Asian, Latino, European, and Native American cultures. Stages around the fairgrounds will have different themes, playing live music and dancing. Kids can enjoy free activities, inflatables, and hands-on fun.

The purpose of this event is to teach everyone the importance of other cultures around the world in a fun and positive way!

When choosing a place to stay during your visit to Lexington, you have a few attractive options! Lexington comprises large rural areas, suburban neighborhoods, the downtown district, and the lake (High Rock Lake). Staying downtown will provide you with easy access to the excitement, the restaurants, and the shops. 

If you want to be close but not too close, there are plenty of options outside town. Then, we have the breathtaking lakefront properties, great for large gatherings, family events, romantic getaways, or a relaxing retreat to the water. 

📍 ” Bear Cottage” in Lexington Historic Downtown District- Not only is this quaint little cottage perfect on a budget, but it is also only two blocks from uptown Lexington. This cottage has everything you’ll need to be comfortable, including a great outdoor patio and a fire pit. Being only a short walk from downtown is great for visitors looking to experience the shops, dine at the restaurants, and explore the heart of Lexington . 

📍 Hampton Inn Lexington – You can’t go wrong staying at the Hampton Inn. Hampton Inn Lexington is clean, affordable, and easy. It is located outside Lexington, so you are close to all the excitement but not directly in it. 9 Incredible Things To Do In Lexington, NC

Settled as early as 1775, Lexington is the Davidson County seat in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Besides being a political and governmental destination, Lexington boomed as a textile and furniture manufacturing city. At the turn of the 21st century, those industries all but disappeared, though the county seat remained.

Today, Lexington is quintessential small-town America, located 20 miles south of Winston-Salem. Its historic and quaint uptown is a charming place to discover yesteryear. Many of the shops in uptown Lexington are a destination all by themselves. You’ll find everything from wants — antiques, furniture, Army Navy store, and pottery — to needs like a grocery market, hardware store, eateries, and places to grab a drink.

There always seems to be something going on here. Here are just a few incredible things to do in Lexington.

1. Eat Delicious Barbecue!

In North Carolina, you’ve got three kinds of barbecue: east, west, and Lexington-style. And you can be sure that folks in Lexington know their “que.” After all, Lexington is known as the “Barbecue Capital of the World.” In 2012, U.S. News and World Report ranked Lexington number 4 on its list of the best cities for barbecue.

It all started in 1919 when farmer Sid Weaver set up an open-pit near the courthouse to cook his hogs and sell barbecue to passersby. The rest is history, as they say. Today there are over 15 barbecue establishments in Lexington. All of them are family-owned, and many of them operated by third-generation family members, holding true to age-old Lexington barbecue traditions. 

Lexington-style barbecue is pork shoulder only, cooked slowly over hardwood coals in red-brick ovens. It is served chopped fine, course, or sliced. “Dip,” not sauce, is made of vinegar and ketchup and a few other secret ingredients that vary from restaurant to restaurant. Lexington barbecue is always served with red slaw (although some places have white) and hushpuppies, holding true to age-old Lexington barbecue traditions. Click here for a complete list.

2. Shop At Conrad And Hinkle Food Market

Conrad and Hinkle Food Market has stood in the same spot for 102 years. Nowadays people would call it an “old-fashioned” market. And it is! Lee Hinkle, grandson of the original store owner, takes pride in serving fresh, local produce, meats, and other items, such as salsas, Moravian chicken pies, and his grandmother’s pimento cheese.

The store retains its century-old charm — tin ceilings, original shelving, and the walk-in freezer that was installed in 1941, the second of its kind in the state. But more than its physical attributes, Conrad and Hinkle retain their personal touches. Employees are friendly, courteous — and they still make deliveries.

3. Get A Sweet-Tooth Fix At The Candy Factory

If you have a sweet tooth — and even if you don’t — The Candy Factory is a must-stop. You can’t miss the signature red-and-white-striped awning out front on Main Street. Visitors walking through the doors are greeted with the scent of freshly-made popcorn and chocolate. Lots of chocolate. The glass cases are filled with a variety of heavenly chocolates and homemade fudge.

Housed in the old Lexington Hardware building (circa 1890), The Candy Factory still has the original wooden floors, but the walls are now lined with bright red candy bins replacing nut and bolt bins. The floor-to-ceiling shelves that used to hold tools and such are filled with goodies, soda pop, toys, and other novelties from yesteryear.

4. Check Out Lanier’s Hardware

What started as a small 1,600-square-foot hardware store has grown into a community landmark. The grandchildren of Ardell Lanier now run the store, and even though they’ve modernized a few things, the place hasn’t changed much since their grandfather first opened in 1940.

Lanier’s is more than just a hardware store. Over the years, a home goods section was added, as was sporting goods. A little bit of everything can be found here. One thing that hasn’t changed is the personal attention each customer gets when they walk in. Lanier’s motto is, “If we don’t have it, or we can’t get it, you don’t need it!”

5. Explore The Davidson County Historical Museum

Lexington could write its own American history book. The Davidson County Historical Museum on Main Street is a great place to spend a couple of hours soaking in that history, plus learn about a few local legends. The museum itself is housed in the Old Courthouse, which has a history of its own. As the county seat, many a trial, as well as other political business, was held there.

You’ll learn a lot here. For instance, did you know that a young, new singing sensation, Elvis Presley, performed before a sold-out audience at the YMCA Auditorium in March 1956? Moving picture comedy actor Charlie Chaplin also visited Lexington in 1918 to sell WWI bonds. And a host of other performers have spent time in Lexington. Many up-and-coming stars got their start (or at least partly) at the annual Lexington Barbecue Festival.

6. Enjoy Wine Tasting

The Yadkin Valley is often referred to as the Napa Valley of North Carolina. The six award-winning Davidson County wineries, or vineyards, are on the southern end of Yadkin Valley, known as the Southern Gateway Wine Trail .

Junius Lindsay Vineyard grows its French varietal grapes on land that has been in the family since 1896. Michael Zimmerman spent much of his life in Southern France’s Rhone Valley, where he learned his craft. Native Vines Winery is “the first American Indian-owned winery in the country.” The Gabbard family are proud members of the Lumbee tribe, the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi River.

Once a tobacco farm, Old Homeplace Vineyard sits on 48 acres that have been in the family for 70 years. The winery has an expansive outdoor deck, overlooking a 1,200-acre lake. Curran Alexander Vineyards has been growing European vinifera wine grapes since 2001 on a farm that’s been in the family since the late 1800s. Having recently opened up for tastings, they offer ample outdoor seating overlooking the vineyards including cozy Adirondack chairs around a large rock fire pit.

Weathervane Winery is so much more than a winery! They offer indoor and outdoor seating, an outside fireplace, an amphitheater, a gazebo, and overnight cottages. And Childress Vineyards is one of the most prominent wineries in North Carolina. More famous in the NASCAR world, Richard Childress grew up near Lexington.

7. Hunt For The Pigs In The City

Fun and fancy life-sized pigs dressed in various costumes adorn the city street corners and greet visitors as they enter buildings. What started as a public arts initiative and a way to bring attention to the revitalized uptown area has grown into a fun and lovable addition to the city.

Folks like the pigs so much they started buying them, and more are continually being made. No one knows for sure how many still line the streets, but it’s always fun when you spot one. How many can you find? And which one will become your favorite?

8. Come Back For The Barbecue Festival

Since 1984, the city has hosted the Lexington Barbecue Festival, one of the largest street festivals in North Carolina. It has become one of the nation’s most popular food festivals. Several city blocks on Main Street are closed off, and up to 400 street vendors line up to sell their art, crafts, and other wares.

Music is played throughout the day on several stages, including the main event, which in the past has included stars like Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, and Taylor Swift. Of course, the main star of the event is local Lexington barbecue, but there are dozens of other food vendors as well.

The annual festival, held in October, has been recognized nationally, regionally, and statewide for its excellence. It has been recognized as one of the “Top Ten Food Festival in America” by Travel + Leisure and was named “One of Ten Great Places to Celebrate Food” by USA Today .

9. Meet The Locals

Do you honestly want to know what the absolute most incredible thing about Lexington is? Its people. There is more “family” and more “community” in this small town than anywhere I can think of. In two days, I’ve heard countless stories of family, community, and about the community being family.

Businesses that began 100 years ago are now being run by third-generation family members. If they’ve been sold to someone else, you can bet on that person having grown up in Lexington and spent their youth in that particular establishment. Local youth graduating high school, who wanted to “get out” of the small-town environment, have now returned with an education and a work ethic. Coupled with their ties to Lexington, they have now started businesses of their own, catering to a new generation of locals and visitors alike.

Extra Tips: Where To Eat, Stay, And Play

You’ll find dozens of places to eat, drink, or just relax in uptown. Perfect Blend Coffee Shop next to Mission Pottery is a perfect place to spend the morning. Sophie’s Cork and Ale is housed in an old book shop. Stop in at Red Donut Shop for fresh donuts all day. Enjoy a craft beer or a glass of fine wine at The Brewer’s Kettle .

The Depot District is a fantastic and fun (ongoing) revitalization project that includes Goose and the Monkey Brewhouse , Bull City Ciderworks , an amphitheater, a farmer’s market, and a flea market.

There are plenty of activities for the outdoor enthusiast in Lexington, too. The second largest lake in North Carolina is just 15 miles away. 15 of the Best Things to Do in Lexington, NC

Lexington is such an underrated place to visit in North Carolina ! Here are a few reasons you should plan a trip.

1. Visit the Local Wineries

I’ve already mentioned that there are six different wineries in Lexington . Each one has a unique vibe and are of varying sizes.

Childress Vineyards is the third-largest vineyard in North Carolina and it’s a sprawling campus to explore. They offer the largest variety of wines as well.

The five other wineries in the area are smaller and each is super cute. Native Vines was the first American Indian owned winery in the US and they serve unique wines like green tea wine.

Weathervane Winery and Junius Lindsay Vineyard are pretty close to each other. Weathervane has both sweet and dry wines and Junius Lindsay has dry and semi-sweet.

Weathervane hosts many events – especially live music throughout the year. Junius Lindsay boasts the only open air tasting room in NC.

Old Homeplace is a gorgeous winery sitting right on a lake with tons of wine options to choose from in addition to slushies in the summer and beer.

Curran Alexander is a great place for wine tasting if you’re a fan of dry wines. The tasting room is in a historic building and they have great outdoor seating and paths through their vines.

Uncorked is a new tour company that will take you to four of these wineries in a day. Check them out so you can make the most of your trip to Lexington and you don’t have to worry about recruiting a designated driver!

There are tons of great Yadkin Valley wineries and many of them are in Lexington.

2. Take a Hike at Boone’s Cave Park

At Boone’s Cave Park you’ll find about 7.5-miles of hiking trails that take you through hardwood forests and along the Yadkin River. The main attraction here is a cave that it’s said Daniel Boone’s family used while they were in the area back in the late 1700s.

Before visiting, take a screenshot of the trail maps in the Boone’s Cave brochure as the map at the park is a bit faded from sun exposure. Park all the way at the end of Boone’s Cave Road near the picnic tables overlooking the river. 

The stairs leading down to the cave will be directly across from the parking spaces. The address for the park is 3552 Boone’s Cave Road, Lexington, NC (link to Google Maps).

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, turn left and the cave will be right there. Bring a flashlight if you want to explore inside the cave.

If you continue down the Riverfront Trail for a bit then you’ll reach Baptism Rock which is just a huge rock that juts out into the Yadkin River. It was a beautiful, peaceful area that would be perfect for a picnic.

In the spring and summer, there are tons of wildflowers here and there are over 125 different butterfly varieties.

3. Learn How to Wakeboard at Elevated Wake Park

I was pretty nervous before visiting Elevated Wake Park because I had never been wakeboarding but I can’t tell you how much fun it was!

My husband was able to come with me when we visited the Wake Park and since neither of us had been before, we started out with a lesson. Lessons last 20 minutes and prices include your rental equipment.

The lessons are done in a separate area from the full-size cable and park area. Instead of going in a full circle, this cable goes in a straight line and the instructor has the ability to slow it down or speed it up as needed.

They’ll teach you proper posture and how to turn before letting you get on the full-size cable. I’ll be honest, I was a little sore after the 20-minute lesson and I definitely felt it for the next few days.

It was super fun though and I couldn’t believe how quickly I learned how to ride and turn.

If you have younger kids that may not want to learn then there’s is also an Aqua Park here with inflatables that they can climb on. That way everyone can enjoy being in the water.

4. Tour the Richard Childress Racing Museum

Richard Childress is a prominent NASCAR team owner and RCR’s headquarters are located in Welcome, just north of Lexington.

You’ll get to learn more about Mr. Childress’ background, how the team evolved, and see many of the famous cars that Dale Earnhardt raced while he was working with RCR.

You can also learn how the cars were developed as you walk through the old shop. There is a museum store here where you can pick up RCR gear and NASCAR memorabilia.

Fun Fact : Richard Childress isn’t the only famous person from NC who grew up near Lexington. Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars grew up here as well!

5. Eat Your Weight in Barbecue

This one might be the most obvious since Lexington has been named the barbecue capital of the world and is one of the things North Carolina is known for .

Multiple restaurants in town still do the traditional Lexington-style barbecue and I was able to try three of them – Lexington Barbecue, Barbecue Center, and Speedy’s Barbecue.

Lexington-style means the meat consists of only pork shoulder and has been slow cooked over hardwood coals. Each place serves the same type of barbecue with just some subtle differences.

The recipes for their dip (the sauce), red slaw, and hushpuppies are all different. Some serve only red slaw while others will give you the option of white slaw. The desserts are also unique to each place like the banana split at Barbecue Center.

Basically, you can’t come to Lexington without eating barbecue for at least one meal.

6. Go Shopping Uptown

My favorite kind of shopping is browsing local stores and supporting small businesses. That’s the whole reason I created SimplyNCgoods – a subscription box full of products from small businesses across NC.

There are tons of great local shops in Uptown Lexington all within walking distance. Missions Pottery & More is full of handmade pottery from coffee mugs to kitchenware to soap holders. They also carry handmade items from other local artisans.

Lexington Souvenir Shoppe just moved into a new location Uptown. Across the street is Conrad & Hinkle where you have to pick up some pimento cheese to take home.

If you love home goods then The Backyard Retreat and River House Emporium are must-visit stores. Head to The Candy Factory if you have a sweet tooth.

Kickin Creations carries products from local artisans and is a great place to find gifts (or something for yourself).

For clothes, the Army Navy Store and Cooper Road Collection are great choices. Find a parking spot Uptown and you can easily walk to all of these!

7. Attend One of the Local Festivals

There is always something going on in Lexington! No matter the season, you’ll find plenty of events and festivals going on in Lexington.

One of the most popular is the Lexington Barbecue Festival. This takes place in Uptown where they close down traffic along Main Street for a few blocks.

They serve barbecue, have live music, sand sculptures, a car show, inflatables, and so much more! This festival is held each October.

Another great festival they put on is the NC Tribute Festival to the KING. This one is relatively new and brings many Elvis Tribute Artists together to compete and perform.

The tribute festival is held in April and 2023 will be their 2nd time hosting it!

8. Hang Out in the Depot District

This is the perfect spot to meet up with friends on a Saturday afternoon and enjoy good food and drinks. The Depot District is located in what was once a furniture manufacturing plant so the feel is very industrial.

These days this is where you’ll find Bull City Ciderworks, Goose and the Monkey Brewhouse, and Pour Folk Provision Co.

Grab some food from Pour Folk Provision and then try a flight of local beer or cider. Goose and the Monkey is very lively and they host events often – almost daily.

They have a large indoor space and tables lining the front of their building outside. For those who aren’t a fan of beer, they have plenty of other options including a full espresso bar.

If you want a bit more of a laid-back vibe then visit Bull City Ciderworks. They have couches and a few tables inside and offer board games. They also have a huge outdoor space with tables, chairs, and a couple of fire pits.

In addition to their cider, they serve beer and wine for those who prefer something different. They also have soda and mocktails for some non-alcoholic options.

9. Grab Some Pimento Cheese from Conrad & Hinkle

Put this at the very top of your list of things to do in Lexington! Even if you aren’t a fan of pimento cheese, you have to try it.

Over the years I’ve found that I am very particular about pimento cheese so it’s a pretty big deal when I find one that I like.

Around here, Conrad & Hinkle is pretty famous for their pimento cheese – they have been making it for over 70 years after all. So when you visit Lexington, make sure to bring a cooler with you so you can take some of their cheese home.

It’s made fresh each day and you can buy it in 1/2 pound, 1 pound, or 2 pound containers. I love making pimento cheese sandwiches for lunch.

10. Get Out on High Rock Lake

One of the major draws to Lexington is High Rock Lake especially for fishing or watersports but you don’t need to own a boat to enjoy the lake.

Rock Outdoors actually rents kayaks and paddleboards. This way you can enjoy the lake at a leisurely pace.

If you want to go fishing, but aren’t familiar with the area then check out Yadkin Lakes Crappie Guides . Shane grew up fishing on High Rock and loves taking people out crappie fishing.

Another guide service to check out is Butch & Barbara’s Fishing Adventures. Butch used to run charters out of Southport and Oak Island but recently moved back to Lexington where he runs fishing tours of the Piedmont region lakes now.

There are great swimming areas at High Rock as well – two of the most popular are Buddle Creek and Pebble Beach.

Buddle Creek is family friendly with lots of picnic areas though the swimming area is a bit small. Pebble Beach is similar but make sure to bring water shoes because the pebbles hurt your feet to walk on. Both swim areas are free to access.

11. Visit the Davidson County Historical Museum

Located in the historic county courthouse, the Davidson County Historical Museum features permanent and rotating exhibits that highlight the geographical and cultural history of the county.

2022 is Davidson County’s Bicentennial Year so they are opening a new permanent exhibit to celebrate the bicentennial.

Some exhibits you’ll find here are a history of education in the county, “Mystery Under Main Street” which explores whether there are tunnels under Uptown Lexington, and the H. Lee Waters Photography Gallery.

They have also staged the historic courtroom to showcase what a trial in the 1920s would have looked like.

12. Check Out the Bob Timberlake Gallery and Museum

If you love art and especially local artists then you have to visit the Bob Timberlake Gallery. A North Carolina native who went to college at UNC Chapel Hill, Timberlake is known internationally for his artwork.

He started his career as an artist in 1970 and then added a furniture line in 1990. He’s received numerous awards for his art as well as home furnishings line.

He’s also been recognized for his charitable contributions to conservation efforts as well as cancer research.

He paints in a realist style and is known for the vibrant colors that he uses. Take a walk around his gallery and you just might go home with a piece of his work.

13. Go on a Scavenger Hunt to Find the Pigs

Yes, there are pigs located throughout Lexington! This was actually an art initiative so these life size pigs are all decorated in different ways.

You can find them throughout Uptown Lexington and around town at some other local businesses. Stop by the Visitor Center where you can pick up a map of the “Pigs in the City.”

This would be on of the fun things to do in Lexington with kids!

14. Kayak along the Yadkin River

If you have your own kayak and can set up a shuttle then I highly recommend a paddle along the Yadkin River. The river is wide and very calm so it’s great for beginners.

You can put in at Boone’s Cave Park and take out down at the York Hill River Access . The float is about 9.5 miles.

Just note that if you plan on leaving a vehicle at Boone’s Cave Park then you need to speak to a park employee first and get a parking pass.

If you don’t have multiple vehicles to set up a shuttle then you can also take a kayak down to the York Hill Access point and kayak in that area. Know your limits though – you don’t want to get down river and not be able to paddle back against the current.

I love checking out local farmers markets while I’m traveling because you really come across some unique finds. The Lexington Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning from early May until early October.

During the winter months, they do have a special Winter Market on select Saturdays each month. Bull City Ciderworks hosts these Winter Markets so just check the schedule to see if one is happening while you’ll be in town.

Where to Stay in Lexington, NC

If you’re looking to stay for a night or to in Lexington, then the Holiday Inn Express & Suites is the best hotel in the area. It’s located right at the entrance to Childress Vineyards and my room even overlooked the vineyard.

This location is convenient to town and there is a path where you can walk from the hotel to the vineyard too.

If a hotel isn’t your style then there are plenty of short term rental options in town as well as on High Rock Lake.

Home to world-famous barbecue, championship-winning NASCAR drivers, and award-winning wineries, Lexington, North Carolina is one of America's hidden gems. It has plenty of things for visitors to see and do, including lesser-known attractions like historical museums and memorials, local art galleries, and a beautiful park with a 140-foot-long cave where pioneer Daniel Boone is said to have hid out during his early years here.
