Unique Dining Experience in Bali – Tsavo Lion Restaurant

Bali has plenty of variety and diversity when it comes to the unique dining experience. However, perhaps one of the most unique culinary experiences in Bali is at Tsavo Lion Restaurant.

Located in the Mara River Safari Lodge, the Tsavo Lion Restaurant is infused with unique wildlife decorations.

Most notably, however, is the view that guests are greeted with when they enter the restaurant.

Located right beside the Lion exhibit of Bali Safari Park , it has large glass panels separating the interior of the restaurant from the Lion’s themselves.

Guests are treated to a full view of the majestic pride of Lions as they enjoy their meal.

Dining Experience

As the name implies, the focal point of the Tsavo Lion Restaurant is the view of the Lion’s exhibit, which can be seen from the interior of the restaurant.

Visitors can observe the prides of Lions going about their day and strolling around the exhibit. The Lion’s exhibit is obviously built with safety in mind, so visitors should not worry at all when dining at the restaurant.

The relative close proximity of the diners and the Lions makes this a truly unique experience that no other restaurant in Bali can offer.

Reservation tips

The Tsavo Lion Restaurant is a popular stop for many guests visiting Bali Safari Park as well as in-house guests of Mara River Safari Lodge.

Therefore, it is important for visitors to make reservations ahead of time to ensure they get a table. Another tip is to choose the tables closest to the glass panels for the maximum view of the Lion’s exhibit.

Also, due to their nocturnal tendencies, the Lions naturally become more active as it gets darker. With that in mind, visitors are sure to witness more activity if they make an evening reservation rather than a daytime one.

Due to this unique culinary experience with Lions, dining at the Tsavo Lion Restaurant will surely leave a lasting impression on you.

• Blue route – 8km (Novice) Perfect for families, young and old. A leisurely ride for beginners with some downhill and uphill challenges to keep it exciting and fun.

All of the birds and animals remain at the park during winter months.

What do the elephants do in the winter?

The majority of our herd of Asian elephants were born and raised at African Lion Safari®, and therefore are acclimatized to the Southern Ontario winter. They often go for walks, forage in the forests, and enjoy the snowmen built by our animal care staff for some additional enrichment! 

What happens to the lions and cheetah in the winter?

Our large cats including the lions and cheetah all grow thicker coats and are acclimatized to the Southern Ontario winters. They remain at the park in the winter and have access outdoors daily!

What kind of animals stay outside in the winter?

Much of the hoofed stock such as Bison, Elk, Deer and Barbary sheep are accustomed to cold weather and remain outside year round. As well, cold climate raptors such as the Bald eagle, Snowy owl and Ferruginous hawk enjoy the winter outdoors.

Do the animals stay outside in the winter?

Some animals and birds stay outside all year round, most of our animals access the outdoors daily, and all are housed in large heating facilities and aviaries throughout the property. 

Lion Country Safari: What to Do, What to See for Your Safari Experience

Lion Country Safari in Florida’s Palm Beach area gives you a safari experience without the price of a plane ticket to Africa. This drive-thru safari park began in 1967 with several free-roaming lions and other animals. Nowadays, there are nearly 1,000 animals on site that roam among the preserve’s 320 acres.

Just what can you expect if you visit Lion Country Safari? Are you really going to get up close with some of the animals there? Here’s the scoop on what to expect, the cost to visit Lion Country Safari, and some tips for your visit.

What to Expect When You Visit Lion Country Safari

Lion Country Safari is a bit off the beaten path in Palm Beach County. In other words, rhinos and giraffes are not crossing your path while you’re shopping for Louis Vuitton bags in downtown West Palm Beach. Expect to drive about a half hour along 98 from downtown West Palm to get to Lion Country Safari, which is in the town of Loxachatchee. It’s about an hour from Miami.

Lion Country Safari tickets run about $41 per adult and $31 per child. Prices may fluctuate, and you may be able to find discounts for tickets online. Everyone must get a ticket except those age 3 and under. You can buy tickets online or at the gate.

When you enter the park, you can go to the drive-through safari area or the Safari World Adventure Park , which includes lots of kid-friendly activities. From a water playground (bring a bathing suit and sunscreen) to mini golf and a petting zoo, there’s plenty to entertain the kiddos at the Adventure Park. There are also ways to interact with other animals, including giraffes. The park also has a couple of places to eat. Although we didn’t make it to Safari World during our visit, it looks like a fun place for kids. We’ll focus on the safari portion of the park here.

The park also has premium experiences, such as a VIP guided tour . Advanced registration is required.

When preparing to enter the park, you’ll be reminded to keep your car doors and windows closed. This is for the animals’ safety and your own. You can also rent a vehicle from Lion Country Safari for $25 for 1 1/2 hours.

For all the reasons you can imagine, your pets also are not allowed on the drive-through safari. Lion Country Safari has kennels available for $5.

When you enter the park, you’ll be given a brochure and directed to a QR code that provides a link to an audio narration of your safari. You can also find a link to the audio tour here , both in English and Spanish. It’s a little over an hour long and follows the different reserves you’ll drive through (we name them below). It’s a lot of facts, but the narration and the map help you better appreciate what you’re seeing. Remember that the audio tour will use your cell phone data.

In the Safari at Lion Country Safari

The four-mile safari features acres upon acres of flat land where the many animals can roam. You drive through the park going through seven different areas (listed below in the order you encounter them….we also list some of the animals you’ll find in each area):

— Las Pampas, modeled after the area of the same name in Argentina. Find alpaca, brown pelicans, and marabou storks

— Buaha National Park from Africa, featuring ostriches and impalas

— Kalahari Bushveldt from southwest Africa, which includes ostriches, gemsbok (a type of antelope), and bongos (another type of antelope)

— Gorongosa Reserve, home to beautiful African lions

— Gir Forest, named for a national park in Gujarat, India. Find Asiatic water buffalo, scimitar-horned oryxes (they have very cool, long horns) and another type of antelope called nilgais

— Serengeti Plains, featuring wildebeests, watusi, and impalas

— Hwange National Park, named for the largest game reserve in western Zimbabwe and including some of better-known, beloved animals, like giraffes, Southern white rhinos, zebras, chimps, and giraffes.

Just how close do you get to the animals? It depends, but you can get pretty darn close. The animals seem pretty oblivious to the cars driving through but some of the more curious ones, like ostriches, will come up near the car. We had dozens and dozens of impalas crossing and walking ahead of our driving path (talk about a traffic jam). Because it’s the animals running the show, it all hinges on how close they feel like getting.

There are a couple of exceptions to this, including the chimps. The lions are behind protective, tall metal fences, and we noticed a couple of Lion Country Safari trucks nearby with staff. “They probably have tranquilizer darts,” someone said. “For the lions or the people?” we asked. Because after all, we are in Florida, where the people can be as unpredictable as the animals.

Seriously though, obey the rules and stay in your car. It may be hard to get a good lion shot with the protection there but you can get many other good animal shots.

You can take your time going through each protected area, even if the safari area is busy. That’s because there are many pull-off areas. So, if you want to stay and watch a certain group of animals and let some traffic go by, you can do so. Feel free to take your time, and remember that you can drive through the safari as much as you’d like on the day you buy your ticket.

If you’re in a bit of a rush, some of the areas, including Gorongosa Preserve (for the lions) have cut-through areas so you can skip them. Even if you’re doing this, just watch the speed limit signs as the animals have the right of way.

The park was an enjoyable visit on a sunny day. If you’re a photographer, bring your fancy camera or use your good phone camera. Some highlights included the curious and playful ostriches (at another safari park, we had ostriches chasing after our tram and then posing for us), the impalas crossing the road in droves, and the rhinos that were just eating and playing in the mud and grass. The zebras were pretty cool, too.

Going through the safari took about an hour and a half. If you add a visit to the Adventure Park, you definitely have a busy half-day visit or may be a full day if you stretch it out.

6 Tips for a Visit to Lion Country Safari

• Plan to visit when it’s raining or early on a sunny day. Surprisingly, the park itself recommends visiting on a rainy day as that’s when the animals are at their most active. If that doesn’t work, then early on a sunny day is their next recommendation (and ours). The park opens at 10 am on weekdays and 9:30 am on weekends. It’s open until 5 pm on weekdays and 5:30 pm on weekends.
• Consider staying at the adjacent KOA. Lion Country Safari KOA is adjacent to the park, and here’s the cool thing we’ve read: If you’re staying there, you can hear the lions roar. Otherwise, hotels are closer to West Palm.
• Watch out for other photo opps. The massive, open nature area that is Lion Country Safari naturally attracts other animals, so you may find other photo opps. For instance, we saw a heron snapping up and eating what we think was an eel or snake. It was a cool shot we could have missed had we not been paying attention.
• Use the map and audio narration to help you get to know the animals better.
• Drive slow and make use of those pull-off areas. Stay off your phone (unless you’re getting pictures with it) and look around.
• Remember that these are wild animals. The animals are part of a conservation effort, and they rule the roost, so to speak. Let them stay wild, and everyone will have fun and get along.

Where to go, what to do and what’s happening in our hometown., lion country safari updates: new gift shop and grille to be built as renovation continues on cafe roar and retail.

A major renovation of Lion Country Safari’s primary restaurant and gift shop building is bringing new life to what serves as an entry and focal point for the famed drive-thru wildlife park’s Safari World. 

And that work is taking place as construction recently began to build a new gift shop and restaurant near the park’s Safari Falls water attraction.

“We can’t wait to unveil these new spaces and share them with everyone,” said Haley McCann, public relations and social media manager for Lion Country Safari, which has hundreds of animals from about 85 species across its 320 acres in central Palm Beach County.

Cafe Roar and the Curio Gift Shop closed earlier this year for the remodel, which is expected to be completed in October, she said. 

“We love the original architecture,” McCann said of the building that houses both the cafe and gift shop. It was built in 1968, shortly after the park opened in 1967. Walking into the cafe with my son in December, it felt a little like a time capsule – appearing very much the same since my childhood, when I would go to Lion Country Safari with my sister and grandparents. 

While the exterior will maintain the unique, natural look that has made it iconic, McCann said the plans include “redesigning how everything flows.” 

The work includes new light fixtures and paint, along with a refinished floor, she said.

In the gift shop, the cash registers will move toward one of the back walls, giving more space to the large windows that let natural light enter through the north side of the building, McCann said. The team is rethinking the way the gift shop is organized, so visitors will see newly defined sections including plush animals and children’s clothing, she said. 

“It’s going to be really an impactful change as far as not only the aesthetics, but also how people browse through the space and the checkout procedure as well,” McCann said. 

A rendering of the restaurant shows a new name, Table 67, a nod to the year the park opened. There will be counters where guests can order and pick up food, along with a dedicated space to pick up mobile orders. Diners will be able to choose from low- or high-top tables. 

I asked McCann how much of a role the COVID-19 pandemic played in the plans. Many restaurants, including Cafe Roar, placed an increased emphasis on mobile ordering during and immediately after the pandemic to encourage guests who otherwise would not go out to eat. The increase in mobile ordering during the pandemic led helped many restaurants survive COVID-19 lockdowns issued to help prevent the virus’ spread.

“We’ve definitely seen a lot of responsiveness and guest use of mobile ordering, and that’s something that not only us but through the food and beverage industry across the nation, has seen an uptick as well,” McCann said. “We also think that there’s definitely a convenience factor with that, as far as families who are out on their adventure.” 

The team at Lion Country Safari is working with its food and beverage service provider, SSA Group, to update the menu at food and beverage locations throughout Safari World, and the cafe’s offerings will be evaluated closer to its reopening, she said. 

Oasis and Reef

Work is also underway now on a new restaurant and gift shop near the popular Safari Falls water play area, McCann said. 

The Oasis cafe and Reef Gift Shop will offer shaded seating and more food options for those spending a few hours splashing at Safari Falls or the more toddler-friendly Safari Splash. 

Safari Falls opened in 2019, marking a major new attraction for the park, with its tunnel slides, dump buckets and sprayers. 

“It’s definitely a huge hit and such a great addition to our park that we’ve been able to add,” McCann said. “We definitely want to build on that.”

Having a restaurant and gift shop there will be more convenient for visitors who may need to buy an extra towel or get a quick bite to eat, she said. 

“It will be a huge bonus as far as increasing our offerings in that area,” McCann said.

Yes, there are new babies

I had to ask McCann if there are any adorable new baby animals along the park’s four-mile drive-thru safari. 

“We definitely have quite a few baby antelope everywhere,” she said. “And I think we have seven or eight wildebeest calves.”

There are also impala and oryx babies, with more on the way, she added. 

Two ostrich chicks hatched last month, and they are being seen more and more by visitors, McCann said. “They’re still in what I call daddy day care,” she said. “They’re kind of learning how to be ostriches.”
