m22 color tour map

M-22 in Manistee County

The southern-most section of M-22 starts in Manistee County off US-31.

Manistee is a charming Victorian port city, best known for the historic Ramsdell Theater, the 1.5 mile Riverwalk , gorgeous beaches and golf courses, and the popular Little River Casino. Two of Manistee’s biggest festivals are the Manistee Forest Festival over July 4th and Sleighbell Parade & Old Christmas Weekend in early December. The fall season is a gorgeous time to drive through the Manistee area, or walk downtown and browse the variety of stores and restaurants. During the month of October, dare to get scared in Manistee’s very own Ghost Ship , otherwise known as the S.S. City of Milwaukee the rest of the year.

After visiting the city of Manistee, follow the winding M-22 up to the village of Onekama , just 20 minutes north of Manistee. Onekama is commonly know as the “Two Lake Town,” offering the combination of Lake Michigan shoreline and peaceful Portage Lake.

Less than 15 minutes north of Onekama you’ll come across the small town of Arcadia , home of Arcadia Daze in July and Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course.

Benzie County Scene

M-22 in Benzie County

Entering Benzie County, M-22 curves through the sister towns of Elberta and Frankfort. Frankfort has an exceptional downtown district with fine dining and unique shopping that makes the town feel much bigger than its small size. Just a few miles north, the M-22 highway takes travelers to the turn off for the Point Betsie Lighthouse , a don’t-miss attraction while in Benzie County. Point Betsie is a public lighthouse with historic and aesthetic value, and a public lakeshore to explore. M-22 continues along the shoreline of Crystal Lake, named accurately for its breathtaking color–with turquoise hues which are typically found in more tropical destinations.

Leland Fish Town in Leelanau County

Leland “Fish Town” | Photo by Todd and Brad Reed Photography

M22 in Leelanau County

M-22 continues up and winds around the Leelanau Peninsula, the “Little Finger” of our mitten-shaped state. Empire offers unparalleled hiking trails. Glen Arbor and Leland’s “Fishtown” are top visitor destinations with friendly locals ready to welcome you in. Rock hounds enjoy looking for the beautiful Leland Blue stones on Van’s Beach downtown. If you make it all the way to Northport at the tip, you’ll find yourself in a more secluded region, surrounded by nature and unspoiled by heavy tourism. Heading back south on the last leg of M-22, you will pass through Suttons Bay, a very nice waterfront community with specialty shops and eateries. The journey ends in Traverse City, an up-and-coming, energetic city and the cherry capital of the world. The National Cherry Festiva l is held there each summer. Traverse City has two bays separated by the Old Mission Peninsula, which offers a another great road trip tour- shorter, but scenic, with country farms and vineyards galore.

Experience the Seasons Along M-22

Spring flowers.

The snow melts, the ground thaws and the days grow longer: Spring is here. As flowers start popping up, bikes and golf clubs are dusted off. Boots change to walking shoes. A perfect beach day sneaks in between two chilly days.

In Michigan, spring is signified by the coming of the trilliums. The common, beautiful white flowers blanket the forest all over West Michigan. There are several other species of trilliums in Michigan ranging from pink, red, green, or yellow flowers as well as different shaped leaves. Some of these species are threatened or endangered and protected under the State Endangered Species Act.

Morel mushroom hunting is a popular spring activity for many people in West Michigan. Early spring brings people out into the woods, searching for a mushroom that resembles a wrinkly gray honeycomb. This mushroom likes wet, 50°F weather, and prefers certain trees more than others. Do your research and ask around for tips, though most people are unlikely to reveal their favorite hunting spots. Morels are delicious and a classic spring flavor here in Michigan; fry them up with a steak, throw them in an omelet, or saute them up on the side.

Summer Fun in the Sun

The most popular time for vacationers to visit West Michigan, summertime is filled warm weather, sunny days, and lots of time spent enjoying the outdoors. There are an abundant amount of things to do . Go swimming in a lake, hiking in the Sleeping Bear Dunes , kayak down a river, camp in the forest, or grill out with the family.

Most towns have their major festivals and events during the summer and you will find live music in virtually every town along M-22, as well as Arts and Crafts fairs.

Farmers Markets also usually run from May-September.

The Brilliant Colors of Fall

Arguably the best time to travel M-22, fall is the time of year that brings the best and brightest colors to the leaves of the trees. Peak time for a color tour is mid to late October, though it can change from year to year. Take a leisurely drive along M-22 and immerse yourself in the reds, oranges, and yellows.

There are so many apple orchards throughout West Michigan, and they are a great place to stop and take in the fall air. Drink apple cider, have a fresh doughnut, pick apples right off the tree, and get lost in a corn maze.

Winter Wonderland

Not for the faint of heart, a West Michigan winter offers many adventures. Go skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice fishing — and, of course, end the day curling up with a hot chocolate in front of the fireplace. Most rivers still run during the winter- creative picturesque scenery that draws photographers from all over. Sleeping Bear Dunes is sculpted daily with added winds and snow.

Even during the winter, many towns celebrate the snowy wonderland with different festivals and events. Christmas is a magical in the snow covered, quaint towns along M-22. The Victorian Sleighbell Parade & Old Christmas Weekend in Manistee is a December classic. No matter where you are, you’ll find spirited people and fun adventures even in the dead of winter.

How M-22 Became a Pure Michigan Byway

The M-22 highway is an iconic symbol of this beautiful region of Michigan and has long served as a stimulus for growth, development, and tourism in Northwest Michigan. In fact, the M-22 highway was constructed in July of 1919 and has been around for about one hundred years.

Many people do not realize that M-22 is actually split into two separately recognized byways. The northern part of M-22, from the Benzie-Leelanau County Line to M-72 in Traverse City, was designated an official byway in 2002 by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and named the Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route. The southern section of M-22, from US-31 to the Benzie-Leelanau County line, was designated in 2016 as the M-22 Pure Michigan Byway.

Any segment of the State Trunkline Highway System that shows scenic, historic or recreational value is eligible to be classified as a Pure Michigan Byway. Pure Michigan is used as a statewide campaign to promote tourism, travel, economic growth, education, and an overall increase in the quality of life in Michigan. Starting as the Michigan Heritage Route in 1993, the name changed to Pure Michigan Byway in 2014. The first two routes declared as official Michigan byways were the Monroe Historic Heritage Route and Copper Country Trail in 1995.

Not just any road can be become a Pure Michigan Byway. In order to be an official byway, a sponsor must submit a proposed byway for designation through the MDOT. Meeting several specific criteria, the route must be:

  • Part of the state trunkline system, meaning it needs to be an “M”, “US”, or “I” highway.
  • Supported by local governments along the route
  • Shown to have one or more intrinsic qualities, such as scenic, historic or recreational value Essentially, the sponsor must make a solid argument as to what is special about the highway and why it should be recognized as a Pure Michigan Byway.

While this process can take several years to complete, the benefits that come with the designation of a Pure Michigan Byway are well worth the wait. The designation of a highway brings in visitors and businesses which increases economic growth within the local regions. It also creates awareness for Michigan’s precious resources and works to preserve them. A Pure Michigan Byway also generates a sense of community that unites the area and builds strong connections through regions all over Michigan.

The Pure Michigan campaign has enhanced the image of the state of Michigan, making it a greater place to live and visit. M-22 is a proud member of this wonderful system of byways all over the state that display and maintain the cultural, historical, recreational, and beautiful parts of Michigan.

The Ultimate Fall Road Trip on Michigan's M-22

On Michigan's epic M-22 highway, fall color doesn't stop at the tree line. You can find it in a vineyard's fruit, the lake's sparkle or even below a river's surface.

Mike Norton has more than 30 years' experience in journalism and worked as media relations director for the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau. He lives in Traverse City, Michigan.

North of Empire, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive forms a majestic, 7.4-mile loop between Little Glen Lake and Lake Michigan. Drivers and cyclists follow the M-22 spur through a covered bridge and beech and maple forests to sprawling lake overlooks, all within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. One by one, two by two, hikers climb through dappled shade and emerge onto a narrow path etched into the side of Empire Bluff, hundreds of feet above Lake Michigan. To the left and right are the high ramparts of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the distant wedge that is South Manitou Island and unbelievably blue water. Amid the brightness and color: cries of gulls, songs by noonday crickets, wind tousling the grass, the deep murmur of the lake pounding below.

The coastal road that leads to Empire Bluff lies out of sight, just beyond the dunes. M-22 meanders from Manistee to Traverse City in the northwest corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, encompassing the Leelanau Peninsula and its vineyards, orchards and resort towns. At 116 miles long, M-22 is a mere wisp of a highway. But it represents much more than space between destinations. The route evokes a vaunted lifestyle where farm stands spill over with cherries and apricots, and half the vehicles in summer carry bikes, paddleboards or kayaks. "It's not just a road," says Traverse City kiteboarder Matt Myers. "It's a way of life."

Matt and his brother, Keegan, discovered the true reach of the highway's mystique in 2004, after they made some road-sign tees for surfing and kiteboarding friends. When the brothers wore the shirts on the cover of a local magazine, they were inundated with unsolicited orders. So they printed more, using the profits to pay down student loans. The requests kept snowballing. Today, their Traverse City store, M22, is a big business selling clothing, coffee mugs, car decals and even bottles of wine branded with the highway logo. They've exported goods to customers around the world. And, perhaps testament to Matt and Keegan's marketing, so many M-22 signs have been stolen from the road, the state highway department had to modify their design. Replacement signs now simply read 22.

Whatever signs you follow around the ring finger of Michigan's Mitten, an M-22 road trip marries stunning countryside and memorable flavors. The lake creates a temperate microclimate that sustains one of the country's most productive fruit-growing regions-and makes this the best possible place to forget a packed lunch. In fall, hardwoods blaze against a backdrop of cobalt water. And beneath the surface, a migrating rainbow of pinks, greens and silvers greets those who venture out by canoe or kayak. Schools of Pacific salmon, up to 30 pounds each, travel inland from Lake Michigan through the Platte River. Their journey—and yours—makes for a glorious ritual of fall.

Fall Road Trip Along the M-22

Manistee to frankfort.

Follow the light to start your trek. The North Pierhead Lighthouse has guided vessels to harbor in Manistee since 1927. M-22 begins north of town, following the Lake Michigan shore to Arcadia, then the bustling resort community of Frankfort near Crystal Lake. Stroll the waterfront, do a little shopping or sample Belgian-style ales at Stormcloud Brewing . Lodging includes the historic Hotel Frankfort . Five miles north of downtown, locals claim Point Betsie is home to Michigan's most photographed lighthouse.

Frankfort to Glen Arbor

M-22 passes through Empire before reaching Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, home to some of the area's most famous attractions. For a paddle down the calm Platte River, try Riverside Canoe Trips . If you prefer splendid views from above, hit the Empire Bluff Trail (1.5 miles round-trip).

The artsy village of Empire marks the center of the local hop-growing industry. Continuing north, a must-see detour onto M-109 leads to the 7.4-mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, accessing some of the most popular trailheads and dunes.

Continue to Glen Arbor for shopping, dining and lodging on the north edge of Sleeping Bear. You'll find an official M22 store and the Cherry Republic headquarters, a fabled "nation" (actually a store) for everything cherry. The Homestead resort offers a cozy beachfront stay.

Glen Arbor to Traverse City

On the Leelanau Peninsula, M-22 squeezes onto a narrow isthmus between Lake Michigan and Lake Leelanau, landing in the resort community of Leland. In the historic Fishtown district, buy smoked fish at the legendary Carlson's market or grab a sandwich at the Village Cheese Shanty. Native Americans were the first to make Leland's Fishtown a fishing port. It's now home to weather-beaten docks, shanties and Great Lakes lore.

M-22 keeps winding up the spike of the peninsula through quaint Northport, then veers back south to Suttons Bay, the most vibrant town on the Leelanau's east side. Check out sportswear and accessories in a time-warp atmosphere at Bahle's and enjoy the Hop Lot Brewing beer garden. Suttons Bay Ciders has a hilltop tasting room with spectacular views. For a splurge and pampered stay, book a room at the Inn at Black Star Farms just south of town.

Back at the peninsula's base, the highway arrives in the relative metropolis of Traverse City (a destination in its own right and well worth adding a day or two to your trip). Before you arrive downtown, stop and toast the end of the route at the waterfront Apache Trout Grill .

By late summer, apples and grapes ripen, and hops are harvested through mid-September. But even if you miss peak season, local fruit liberally fills glasses year-round. The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail is a staple, with more than 20 stops. Travelers' choices along M-22 have now expanded to include craft beer at Hop Lot or cider at Tandem Ciders. "All of us—winemakers, cider-makers and brewers—have learned from each other," says Chris Guest, a local winemaker and consultant for spots like Suttons Bay Ciders.

18 Ways to Enjoy the M-22 Fall Color Tour

fall foliage isn’t the only reason to plan a trip to northern michigan in autumn..

We’ve put together a list of some of the fun, food and activities to experience along the M-22 scenic highway. Recently named one of the top five greatest driving tours in America by Rand McNally, M-22 has something to offer everyone. But don’t take our word for it. Check it out for yourself. In case you need a little help getting started we’ve complied a list of 18 Ways to Enjoy the M-22 Fall Color Tour . So grab your camera, hop in the car, and hit the highway.

1. Canoe the Platte. Fall is one of the best times to take a canoe or kayak down the Platte River. The calm cool waters reflect mother nature’s painted canvas, but they also reveal a seasonal secret. The salmon run upstream this time of year and the Platte River is the perfect place to witness this natural wonder. The weir is closed this time of year which means you’ll portage around it. But on the other side the water boils with jumping fish. You couldn’t get a better view anywhere else. Riverside Canoes is located on M-22 and open until the second weekend in October for canoe and kayak rental, or fishing tackle if you’re feeling adventurous.

3. Hike Old Indian Trail . Just on the outskirts of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore on M-22 between Crystal Lake and the Platte River there’s a wilderness trail known as Old Indian Trail . There are 2 loops available, both about a 2.5 mile hike through evergreens and colorful hardwoods. But if you make it to the end you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, expanses of sandy beaches and dunes. It’s a great trip to take with your four-legged friends.

4. Benzie Fall Festival. There is so much to do at the fall festival we couldn’t list it all here. But you won’t want to miss the pumpkin chucking contest. Here you’ll see trebuchets, similar to a catapult, built by local high school students challenged to see whose construction will go the distance. Once loaded the trebuchets launch giant pumpkins into the air over Betsie Bay in Frankfort. Cheers and bragging rights go to the winning team.

5. Dinner at The Manitou. Nestled among the changing leaves along M-22, The Manitou Restaurant is a great place to stop and enjoy a fall meal. If you hear someone ask about Skinny Dippers they’re not suggesting a cold jump in the lake. They’re actually ordering a crispy appetizer basket of potato skins. All the soups and pies are made-from-scratch so save some room for their famous blueberry raspberry pie a la mode.

7. Take in Breathtaking Views. The scenic drive through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park is an absolute must on any visit to Northern Michigan. The park has over a dozen picture perfect Scenic Overlooks which explain why so many of us come back year after year. No matter the season this drive is worthwhile, but the colors of autumn bring out the beauty of this hardwood forest in shining contrast to the crystal blue waters and miles of sand dunes.

9. Visit Fishtown , the historic fishing village in Leland . Wooden shanties line the boardwalk of this century-old fisherman’s haven. Today charter fishing boats bring in fresh caught salmon to be smoked at Carlsons, and the Manitou Transit waits to take visitors on the short journey to the Manitou Islands. From unusual cheeses to locally-made clothing, these rustic shanties hold a vast array of treasures.

10. Tour Art Galleries. For the art lover there are dozens of unique galleries all along the M-22 corridor. Stop in Glen Arbor to discover the distinct style of Sticks painted furniture at the Ruth Conklin Gallery. Becky Thacher’s exquisite jewelry is a must-see along the road to the beach. And on the other side of the peninsula you don’t want to miss Michigan Artist’s Gallery in Sutton’s Bay, where art can be fun, fresh, stylish and affordable. Check out the Fall for Art in Leelanau on Columbus weekend for a county wide art tour.

12. Dine along the water’s edge. When the warm summer’s breeze becomes a brisk autumn wind, find a room with a view and enjoy the scenery from the cozy warmth of the restaurant. Check out The Bluebird in Leland, where tables line the windows along the Leland River. Or visit Knot Just A Bar in Omena where you gaze over Grand Traverse Bay or sneak next door for a sip of wine from Leelanau Cellars tasting room.

14. Take a Haunted Hayride.  Looking for a fright this fall, then head over to Empire for their annual haunted hayride, Field of Screams . A fundraiser for the Empire Eagles to support needy families through the holiday season. Take a spooky ride through an eerie wood filed with ghouls. Cider and donuts await those who make the trip. Held the last two weekends before Halloween, on M-72 near 669.

16. Take a Beach Walk. The waters of fall are often too cold for swimming, but the beaches are still a great place to enjoy nature’s gift to Northern Michigan. Follow M-22 from Frankfort to Empire and explore some of the roads that lead to small beaches. Peterson Beach, Otter Creek and North Bar Lake are great places to hike the dunes, comb the shores for fossils and capture the picturesque views of Lake Michigan. Or join the park rangers for an evening beach patrol along Sleeping Bear Point in Glen Haven.

17. Shop ‘Til You Drop. The M-22 scenic drive takes you through a half dozen quaint towns defined by their unique locations and the collection of small businesses that make up these communities. Take time to browse through their stores, sample their homemade edibles and bring home something to remember your journey. Perhaps some M-22 logowear would be appropriate.

Autumn in Northern Michigan has so much to offer. So to all you leaf-peepers, welcome! As you travel along M-22 through Benzie and Leelanau counties don’t hesitate to take a few detours along the way. And don’t forget your cameras!

In fact, travelers today still enjoy renting Victorian-era cottages throughout the town, which are filled with both charm and history. Visitors of all ages have long been attracted to this town, which has earned the nickname of the “Two Lake Town” because of its proximity to Portage Lake and Lake Michigan.

On top of that, it has a Lake Michigan access channel that makes it convenient to go boating and fishing on the lake. Families that enjoy a day on the beach often spend time rock hunting because the town is one of the best places on Lake Michigan to find the famous Petoskey stones.

In addition, Arcadia is a preferred destination among golfers because the infamous and picturesque Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course is located here. Any road trip along M-22 should include a stop in Arcadia, which is the perfect place to enjoy a truly authentic Michigan experience.

Lodging options in Arcadia

Benzie County Towns to Visit Along M22 Michigan

Inspiration point michigan m22.

Just north of Arcadia in Benzie County is one of the most breathtaking lookout points on the M22 Michigan scenic drive. Inspiration Point, or the Arcadia Lookout as it’s sometimes referred to, is a scenic turnout that allows you to truly appreciate the beauty of the Michigan landscape.

In order to enjoy the view, there’s a climb ahead of you because the lookout point is about 800 feet above sea level. Fortunately, an overlook was constructed over the sand dune to make it as easy as possible for anyone to enjoy the panoramic view at the top.

You should be prepared to climb more than 200 steps to reach Inspiration Point, but your efforts will be rewarded. At the top, you’ll see endless views of Lake Michigan and the sandy, tree-lined topography of the region.

While this scenic turnout offers amazing views throughout the entire day, it’s perhaps most popular at sunset, where a crowd of people turns out nearly every night to see the sun dip below the shores of Lake Michigan.

Inspiration Point, Arcadia - M-22

Elberta M-22 Scenic Drive

For a taste of what a quiet life in Northern Michigan might be like, stop at the tiny village of Elberta, which is home to only a little more than 325 residents. In this sleepy town, you’ll find the perfect lakeside escape.

At Elberta’s Waterfront Park , you can take a break from your road trip, and enjoy a peaceful picnic or let your kids burn some energy on the playground. There are many walking paths along the waterfront, making this a popular spot among visitors and locals alike.

Another excursion that you can enjoy in this small town is charter fishing. Given its proximity to Lake Michigan and its relatively slow pace, Elberta is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. Charter fishing tours take you onto Lake Michigan for a chance to get the catch of a lifetime before getting on M22 Michigan again.

Lodging options in Elberta

Maggy’s Farm from VRBO offers visitors a chance to have their own slice of Elberta all to themselves. It’s just two blocks from M-22 and minutes from Elberta Beach. It’s the perfect spot for some rest and relaxation.

This gorgeous Victorian offering from VRBO is less than two miles from Frankfort and is a great spot if you’re looking for a place to stay between Elberta and Frankfort. It’s within walking distance of several places to eat and plenty of shops in the village.

Elberta - M-22

M22 Frankfort Scenic Drive

To the north of Betsie Lake and Betsie Bay on the M22 Michigan scenic drive is the town of Frankfort, which is known for its charming atmosphere, sandy dunes, and picture-perfect beaches. If you want to stay awhile, you could rent a Victorian cottage that has stood for more than a century.

With its tree-lined downtown area and a plethora of local shops, Frankfort is a favorite among travelers who love to spend leisurely days in the Michigan countryside. In addition to playing on a Frankfort beach or shopping in town, most visitors make time to visit the different lighthouses that call Frankfort home.

The Frankfort North Light is located on a pier that juts into Lake Michigan. It’s an industrial lighthouse that serves an important purpose, but it’s nearly the perfect lookout point for memorable Lake Michigan sunsets.

Perhaps the most treasured lighthouse in the city is Point Betsie Lighthouse , a regal lighthouse attached to a restored farmhouse that features a brick red roof. It’s a beautiful place to catch a sunset and an important historical attraction. The lighthouse opens for tours during the summer.

Lodging options in Frankfort

The Hotel Frankfort entreats visitors to come as guests, but leave as friends. The hotel is nearly 100 years old and sits just a few blocks from Lake Michigan beaches.

This Bayside Cottage from VRBO is located close to downtown Frankfort and offers enough room for a family vacation or a weekend getaway with friends. Plus, it offers plenty of amenities inside and it’s close to the lake.

Towns on M22 Michigan in Leelanau County

M22 michigan scenic drive in empire.

After leaving Frankfort, you’ll wind around Crystal Lake and along the Lake Michigan shoreline into Leelanau County, the gateway to Northern Michigan. The first stop after you enter Leelanau County is Empire, a tiny community and entrance to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore .

Before you get into the National Lakeshore and begin climbing those sandy dunes, though, you should spend some proper time in Empire. It has a charming downtown area, where you can find restaurants, souvenir shops, and chocolate stores.

Also, Empire Beach is a rugged and private beach where you’ll feel as if you have the glory of Lake Michigan all to yourself. It’s the perfect beach for sunbathing, splashing, or rock hunting, and is a favorite among visitors of all ages.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on M22

Whether you make a stop in Empire or simply cruise along M-22 Michigan to enjoy the views, you can’t miss the opportunity to explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore . Continuously voted as one of the most beautiful places in the country, this protected area is a playground for all ages.

The park is often considered a hidden gem that many travelers from outside of Michigan easily overlook. The best way to experience it is to take a trip along Pierce Stocking Drive , a scenic drive that will take you to the most important points of interest throughout the park.

Not only will you be able to sink your feet into the softest sand imaginable and hike up impossibly tall dunes, but you’ll also discover incredible lookout points along the drive that will make you feel as if you entered another world entirely.

At the Sleeping Bear Dunes, you can enjoy a picnic on a sunny afternoon, or find a spot on a dune to watch the sun glide gracefully into the lake below. It’s a very popular spot, so don’t be surprised if you encounter other travelers while you’re hiking or climbing, making Michigan memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Sleeping Bear Dunes, Empire - M-22

M22 Glen Arbor Scenic Drive

After immersing yourself in the majestic wilds of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, continue your road trip north along the winding M22 Michigan scenic drive. The next town along the way is Glen Arbor, a welcome respite from the rugged outdoor experiences on the dunes.

In Glen Arbor, you’ll be welcomed by a quaint downtown area that’s filled with boutique shops, mom-and-pop restaurants, coffee houses, and ice cream stands. In addition to its picturesque downtown, it boasts many miles of shoreline, beaches, and dunes — much like the rest of Northwest Michigan.

Recently named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” and designated one of 20 of the best summer vacation destinations, Glen Arbor is quickly earning a reputation across the country as being one of the best places to spend a leisurely holiday.

Lodging in Glen Arbor

The M-22 Inn is nestled in the heart of Glen Arbor and is close to all the boutique shops and restaurants in town. The inn is a two-story colonial-style home with comfortable accommodations and it’s close to the beach too.

Glen Arbor Bed & Breakfast and Cottages offers cozy rooms and suites, gourmet breakfasts, and plenty of amenities. It’s thought of as one of the best places to stay in Northern Michigan and it’s just steps from Lake Michigan.

Cherry Republic, Glen Arbor - M-22

Leland M-22 Scenic Drive

Once you finish exploring all that Glen Arbor offers, you can hop back on the M22 Michigan scenic drive to begin a peaceful stretch along the Leelanau Peninsula. Along the way, you’ll see signs for wineries nearly every mile or so, so stop to sip a few new vintages while soaking in views of the stunning landscape.

Before you know it, you’ll arrive in the town of Leland, which is one of the most unique towns on this scenic journey. It was developed on a small sliver of land that’s located between the mighty Lake Michigan and sparkling Lake Leelanau.

While it may be a small village, there’s a lot to discover in Leland . It’s one of the most walkable communities in northern Michigan, so you can easily park the car and go exploring on foot for a while.

Be sure to take the time to visit one of the city’s most important points of interest —  Fishtown . This working fishing village pays tribute to the vital role that commercial fishing played in the region throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Fishtown is comprised of many fish shanties, and there are few places like it in Michigan, or throughout the country. Some of the shanties house boutique shops, cheese stores, restaurants, and art galleries. There’s even a museum that tells the history of fishing in the community.

Lodging in Leland

Riverside Inn has been a Leland landmark for decades and is known to visitors near and far as a home away from home. Stay for a long weekend on your M-22 journey and treat yourself to an excellent meal with seasonal offerings and delicious wine.

Falling Water Lodge just might be the “best dam lodge around” and has been a Leland mainstay since the 1960s. Each room here is a little different from the others, so you’ll have your own unique experience. The proximity to the water and great amenities (like fishing off the balcony) are excellent too.

Fishtown, Leland - M-22

Northport on M-22 Michigan

Beyond Leland, M-22 Michigan continues to head north until reaching the town of Northport. This town is often described as the most picture-perfect town on the peninsula, and its historic downtown area is filled with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and more.

The laid-back nature of this town attracts a relaxed crowd, and fishing is a favorite activity among both locals and visitors alike. In addition to checking out the town itself, you could make time to explore Leelanau State Park , which consists of more than 1,500 acres.

The park is also home to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum. In addition to spending hours hiking along the trails and enjoying the wildlife, you can play along the shore and search for Petoskey stones while wading in the surf.

When you’re in Northport, you have the ability to enjoy views of both Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay. It’s a moment that you won’t soon forget.

Lodging in Northport

The Northport Inn is located in the heart of downtown and is a favorite Northern Michigan vacation spot. It’s just two miles from Lake Michigan and close to sailing, wine tours, and so much more.

This cozy waterfront cottage in Northport from VRBO offers the perfect cottage getaway for a couple. Some nice amenities are included and it’s just a short distance from downtown.

Leelanau State Park, Northport - M-22

M-22 Town of Suttons Bay

Once your time in Northport is complete, you’ll begin heading south for the first time on the highway while enjoying the views of the eastern side of the Leelanau Peninsula. Now, the waterfront view is no longer Lake Michigan. Instead, it’s the mighty Grand Traverse Bay.

Before long, you’ll arrive in Suttons Bay, yet another idyllic town on the Leelanau Peninsula and along the M22 Michigan scenic drive. With its colorful downtown buildings and welcoming appeal, Suttons Bay is a favorite among first-timers and veteran Michigan travelers alike.

If you truly want to immerse yourself in the Leelanau Peninsula wine scene, Suttons Bay is the perfect place for you. Nearly every winery boasts a unique experience, such as outdoor dining with panoramic views of the bay or private wine tastings.

Lodging in Suttons Bay

The Korner Kottage Bed and Breakfast is housed in a cottage that dates back to the 1920s. Visitors can wake up with a great sunrise and a cup of coffee on the front porch or walk to nearby beaches, shops, and restaurants.

Northern Dream Bed & Breakfast is tucked back in the woods near the Leelanau Trail in Suttons Bay. It’s in the “middle of nowhere,” but it’s close to everything, so visitors can experience quaintness and the hustle and bustle of the city.

Suttons Bay - M-22

M-22 Michigan Town in Grand Traverse County

Traverse city on m22 michigan.

As the old saying goes, “save the best for last!” In many respects, the final stop on the M22 Michigan scenic drive is the gem of the entire tour. You can explore the thriving downtown area, which has local shops, flavorful restaurants , and lively breweries . Michigan fall drives: M-22 Manistee to Leelanau color tour

  • by Marla R. Miller
  • October 14, 2021 October 26, 2021

“There is something so special in the early leaves drifting from the trees – as if we are all to be allowed a chance to peel, to refresh, to start again.” – Ruth Ahmed

Highway M-22 garners national acclaim for its scenery, especially during color tour season, and views of rolling countryside. M-22 has been described as “one of the country’s greatest road trip adventures” on a Pure Michigan blog . In 2015, USA TODAY 10Best readers voted M-22 as America’s No. 1 Best Scenic Autumn Drive.

The 116-mile stretch of highway winds along the Lake Michigan shoreline, passing through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Michigan’s wine region. We’ve been visiting the Frankfort area for color tours since we first started dating a decade ago. You’ll be able to tell by how young we look in some of these photos.

There is so much to say about this area, whether you start in Manistee or start in Leelanau County and end in Frankfort. But make sure to check out my first installment of favorite fall color tours closer to home, Michigan fall drives: Muskegon to Ludington color tours .

Personally, I prefer heading north on this stretch of M-22 . I think the views are better. Out of Manistee, you can actually start the scenic color tour by turning on M-110 or Lakeshore Road. This route takes you to Orchard Beach State Park and connects with M-22 in Onekama.

Orchard Beach sits on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, making it another fun place to camp in the fall or really any season. Portions of Lakeshore Road follow the lakeshore. You can stop off at Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary or Bar Lake Beach on Lake Michigan.

Otherwise, M-22 veers off U.S. 31 near Little River Casino and heads to Onekama , on the shores of Portage Lake, and Arcadia. While this route winds through the countryside, there are a few highlights. Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club and Resort offers lodging, dining, and world-class golfing. The public Bluffs Course features a links style layout with panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Once you arrive at Arcadia, you’ll find a public beach but not much else.

Arcadia marsh, overlook on color tour

Arcadia Marsh Nature Preserve is a popular spot for birding as a Great Lakes Coastal Marsh, a rare and threatened ecosystem. This 400-acre coastal marsh is one of about 15 remaining along Lake Michigan’s Lower Peninsula shoreline. After exploring the preserve or the beach, you can stop off for ice cream before continuing the color tour.

m22 color tour map

Arcadia Overlook , also known as Inspiration Point, draws photographers and Instagrammers to bask in the beauty of Lake Michigan and snap selfies. And Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Preserve provides diverse recreational opportunities right near Lake Michigan – all for free.

m22 color tour map

C.S. Mott Nature Preserve

Many people drive right past the signs for C.S. Mott Nature Preserve, but hidden within the woods and dunes are great hiking, biking, and birding trails. You can hunt for mushrooms, wildflowers, and some animals too. I wrote a Get Outdoors piece, Coastal Preserve , for the spring issue of Michigan BLUE. Here’s an excerpt from my story:

Why Visit?: “The property is amazing,” says Glen Chown, executive director of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy , which oversees the preserve. “It has everything we love about Michigan — two miles of waterfront shoreline and coastal dunes that are world-class and rise straight out of Lake Michigan.”

The land conservancy has invested millions of dollars in trails, signage, and the universally accessible Overlook Trail. That award-winning, half-mile trail is accessible from the Baldy Trail parking lot, just off M-22 north of the Inspiration Point overlook.

m22 color tour map

Frankfort hub of outdoor activity

When visiting Frankfort, we usually camp at Betsie River Campsite , a private campground with cute dog-friendly cabins and vintage trailers if it’s cold. We’ve also managed to get a coveted spot at Sleeping Bear’s Platte River Campground . On past trips, we’ve kayaked the Platte and Betsie rivers and biked the Betsie Valley Trail from Frankfort to Beulah. We always enjoy Frankfort’s beach and scenic drives through the national park.

If you can handle rustic camping, there are several state forest park campgrounds near Honor. These include: Platte River State Forest Campground , Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground , and Lake Ann State Forest Campground . For budget travelers, it’s only $15 a night to camp. Another bonus: they are right on a river and lake. It’s an affordable way to vacation in the region. I wish we would have discovered them sooner!

m22 color tour map

Pumpkin Ed and Point Betsie Lighthouse

On a rainy day or any day, it’s worth a stop in Oliver Art Center , a community art center that offers classes and exhibits throughout the year. Read more about this Unique Shoreline Gallery in my story for Michigan BLUE. Other area attractions include Point Betsie Lighthouse , which hosts ghost tours in the fall. And make sure to scope out Pumpkin Ed, a popular pumpkin carver who sets up an elaborate Halloween display in his yard at 722 Leelanau, Frankfort.

m22 color tour map

Craft beer, wine in country setting

If food and spirits are more your thing, you can head inland. There are several unique breweries and wineries in the region: Stormcloud , Five Shores Brewing , St. Ambrose Cellars , Cabbage Shed , The Roadhouse Mexican Bar & Grill , and Iron Fish Distillery . Nearby, Crystal Mountain offers scenic chairlift rides to view the fall colors on select dates through Oct. 30.

m22 color tour map

M-22: Sleeping Bear Dunes to Leelanau

Many tourists and out-of-staters love this area since it’s right in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore . But locals also enjoy Living in the Land of Delight , which you can read about in my feature for Grand Rapids Magazine.

m22 color tour map

The sightseeing is great from either direction. You can take M-22 north out of Frankfort or explore the Leelanau Peninsula out of Traverse City and head south on M-22. This color tour can take most of the day if you stop off at Empire, Glen Arbor, and Leland, also home to historic Fishtown . Glen Arbor has shops, Cherry Republic and Art’s Tavern . This historic local bar, with college and sport pennants covering the ceiling, is a great stop for lunch or a house beer.

m22 color tour map

Drive to the tip of Leelanau Peninsula

In Northport, you can keep going north and drive out to the tip of Leelanau Peninsula. Here you’ll find beaches, hiking trails, and rustic camping at Leelanau State Park . Grand Traverse Lighthouse decorates for the Halloween and holiday season and remains open for tours through December. Many people enjoy stopping in picturesque Suttons Bay for shopping.

m22 color tour map

Explore Sleeping Bear Dunes

This stretch of M-22 also includes many points of interest in the national park, including the popular Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive , which is a must-do in the fall. You can test your heart health on the Dune Climb . If you like history, make time to visit historic Glen Haven Village and Point Oneida Rural District. The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire provides park passes, maps, and visitor information on the national park.

Another draw of this drive is that most of the attractions are free to see other than Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. You do have to buy a pass if you’re camping or planning a longer visit. The Lake Michigan Dune Overlook provides an impressive – and somewhat scary – view of the shoreline and dune bluff. The dune drops off down to the lake 450 feet below.

m22 color tour map

I don’t think this stretch of M-22 offers the most scenic views of colorful tree canopies and vistas from the car, but people like it because there is a lot to see and do. You can mix up the day with wine tasting and historic points of interest.

The popular Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail covers 20 scenic miles between Empire and Bohemian Road (CR-669) if you prefer two-wheeled color tours. You can access many hiking trails of varying difficulty that do offer scenic overlooks of the dunes and lake. And the view from the Lake Michigan Overlook always makes me go “Wow.”

m22 color tour map

Color tour passes farms, barns

The M-22 color tour drive also passes historic barns, farms, and roadside farm stands. The rural scenery along M-22 is another reason the route has earned national acclaim. It’s a nice change of pace from city life and makes you appreciate the simplicity of the country.

Leelanau color tour

Take time to watch the leaves floating from the trees. Savor the smells of fall. Slow down and enjoy the scenery. Stop and pick out a pumpkin or have a picnic at a roadside park. And remember to reflect and recognize the life lesson. If the trees can lose their leaves every year and start over again, so can we.

The One Fall Color Tour You Must take in Northern Michigan

The One Fall Color Tour You Need to Take in Northern Michigan Cover Photo

Now that Tony and I are with baby, enjoying a calm, scenic fall color tour as a family of 3 along a windy, tree covered road doesn’t sound so relaxing. Winston is transitioning into his ‘big boy’ car seat now and so far, hates it. While I’m sharing with you the one fall color tour you must take in Northern Michigan today, it may be another year before we search for a new color tour! We spontaneously took this day trip a few October’s ago shortly after we moved to Michigan from Kenya. It was the first time I saw the leaves changing colors in 5 years and my husband’s first time ever!

This year, I’m planning to take my son on his own mini fall color tour – from the comfort of his stroller. For that, I’m going to head back to one (or all) of the parks I’ve written about here . He’s been really into trees ever since he first started to notice things around him. I imagine he’ll get a kick out of vibrant red, orange, and yellow hued leaves!

Fall Color Tour Summary

When: Saturday during peak fall color

Time spent: 3 hours

Budget: $$ – the cost to use the alpine slide once, wine & food for dinner

From Grand Rapids, we headed north on US 131 towards Cadillac. Just before Cadillac, exit the highway and head west on M-55. Continue until you reach Crystal Mountain on the left side of the road.

After the fun and beauty at Crystal Mountain, turn right on M-115 then shortly after that, take another right onto Kurick Road. Then shortly after that, take a right onto Smeltzer Road. While on Smeltzer I cannot emphasize this enough – enjoy the beauty of the fall colors! As we drove on this road, we noted that since it wasn’t the main road, there weren’t many other cars that crossed our path. Plus the road is hilly and tree covered, creating a mini tunnel of trees.

Smeltzer ends at the junction with US-31. Turn right then turn left onto Joyfield Road. This road ends at M-22. Turn left onto M-22 then continue for almost 2 miles until you reach the Arcadia Scenic Turnout (aka Inspiration Point).

One Fall color tour you must take in Northern Michigan 5

The first stop on the one fall color tour you must take in Northern Michigan is to Crystal Mountain! If you’re traveling as a couple, friends, by yourself, or with children, there are so many things to do here! While we purchased a one time ride down the alpine slide, Crystal Mountain offers day passes and more! Not only will you see beautiful fall colors on the way down on the alpine slide, but in order to get to the top of the mountain, you use the chair lift. This lift brings you above the tree line and behind you, makes it possible to see all the trees in the valley below.

During the fall, Crystal Mountain offers tons of fall themed activities to take advantage of. Besides the alpine slide, in the past they provide a petting zoo and hay ride. Because of COVID, this fall may look a little different so be sure to check out their website for updates.

Fall is also a great time to take advantage of their Legacy Art Park . The Art Park costs $5 for adults but is free for those 17 and younger. It contains over 50 sculptures, poetry stones, and an outdoor amphitheater on 1.6 miles of wooded hiking trails.

Arcadia Scenic Overlook

Overlooking M22

Our second stop during our color tour was the Arcadia Scenic Overlook, also known as Inspiration Point. While here, be sure to climb the 120 steps up to look out over Lake Michigan and the small town of Arcadia a short drive away. The view is well worth it!

Cruise M22 down to Manistee

Lake Michigan during Fall

Before winding down the color tour in Manistee, we stopped at the Captain John Langland Park Beach in Onekama. This stop is about halfway between Arcadia and Manistee. The beach is a short walk through the dune grass from the parking lot. Fall is a great time to see some big waves on Lake Michigan.

Nearby the beach, on the drive back to connecting to M22 is the Portage Lake Lighthouse. Built in 1930, this lighthouse originally sat at the channel entrance to Portage Lake from Lake Michigan until 1985. Then in 2011, after restoration work provided by the Portage Lake Association, the lighthouse moved to its current home at the Michigan Natural Resources Launch Site.

The Fillmore

The Fillmore Glass of Wine

To conclude the fall color tour to Northern Michigan, we grabbed a bite to eat at The Fillmore of Manistee. This restaurant has a warm and cozy vibe with brick walls and wood flooring. The menu includes delicious hot sandwiches, burgers, and wood fired pizza with a variety of local beers and wines.

The Fillmore is conveniently located right in downtown Manistee, if you have any additional time to explore, I recommend checking out my blog post detailing our day trip to Manistee . Otherwise, we enjoyed walking around downtown Manistee to marvel at the Victorian architecture. During the fall, the streets and shops aren’t as busy so it’s a great time to take advantage of some local shopping!

Have you ever driven around during fall to admire nature’s beauty? What routes have you taken?

M22 Road Trip: The Ultimate Guide

M22 is the most iconic highway in Michigan. It’s a state highway located in Northern Michigan, which stretches 116 miles along the coast of Lake Michigan and navigates through four counties: Manistee, Benzie, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse.

The highway also cuts through the 45h parallel, the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole. In addition to being a highway, the infamous M22 road sign is considered a cultural symbol for Northern Michigan in general. There truly is something for everyone on M22.

Table of Contents

Lake Michigan

Since M22 runs around the shore of Lake Michigan, you’re bound to come across a beach !

Lake Michigan does take some time during the summer to be warm enough to swim in, so if you want to swim in Lake Michigan, I would recommend to visit in late July/early August, so the lake is warm enough to swim in.

In addition to Lake Michigan, there are other smaller bodies of water along the highway that you can stop at too. Other bodies of water that have beaches include:

  • Lake Leelanau
  • Little Traverse Lake
  • Platte River

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes

The most famous landmark along M22 is the Sleeping Bear Dunes . Sleeping Bear Dunes was established as a national park in 1970 by the National Parks Service, marking 2021 as its 51st anniversary.

The park is named after The Legend of the Sleeping Bear: years ago, a mother bear and her two cubs were driven into Lake Michigan from a large fire [from what is now known as the state of Wisconsin].

The mother and her cubs swam across Lake Michigan, but she lost sight of her cubs along the way. When she made it to shore, her cubs were still swimming, and she climbed the dunes to get a better view of the lake and her cubs.

Sadly, she watched her cubs drown in the lake. The mother bear stayed on the dunes for days watching the same spot where her cubs drowned. The spirit of Gitche Manitou raised two islands in honor of the two cubs, known today as North Manitou Island and South Manitou Island.

In 2011, Good Morning America voted the Sleeping Bear Dunes as “ the most beautiful place in America ,” and it’s not hard to see why!

Sleeping Bear Dunes has a variety of natural beauty: forests, dunes, bluffs, inland lakes, and unique flora and fauna.

You can explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes via hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, camping, kayaking, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive , and through two historic sites: Glen Haven Village and Port Oneida .

Every year in elementary school, my school would visit the Dune Climb at the park; I even went sledding there one time in the winter!

Lighthouses

Point Betsie Lighthouse

Lighthouses are scattered around Lake Michigan to help sailors find their way. These lighthouses played a crucial role in keeping people safe on the Great Lakes.

While most lighthouses are no longer in operation, they are still open to the public for viewing and even guided tours. The main lighthouses that are on the route of M22 include:

  • Point Betsie Lighthouse
  • Robert H. Manning Memorial Light
  • South Manitou Island Lighthouse*
  • Grand Traverse Lighthouse

*In order to see this lighthouse, you need to plan a day trip to the island South Manitou via the Manitou Island Transit .

Canoe/Kayak

Lake Michigan kayak

Being able to view the sights of M22 while getting some exercise is always beneficial! One great way to do this is by kayaking or canoeing . You can either provide your own or rent one for the day at various shops in the area.

Be forewarned: if you plan to kayak on Lake Michigan itself, it can be unpredictable, so be prepared.

A few years ago, my boyfriend, Dave, and I rented kayaks from North Shore Outfitters in Northport and kayaked at Bay Front Park: close enough to the shore to feel safe but enough of an adventure for what we wanted.

I would recommend kayaking or canoeing on one of the inland lakes, where it’s more predictable and calm.

Bicycle Trails

michigan trails bike

The landscape along M22 makes it perfect for sightseeing via bicycle. Bicycling is a great way to exercise and a great way to see the landscape.

You could bike along M22 itself, but I wouldn’t recommend it since it’s a busy road with cars. Over the years, there have been several bike trails created to help cyclists see the sights while staying safe at the same time.

In high school, my basketball team would get in shape before our season by riding along the Leelanau Trail . Similar to canoes and kayaks, you can choose to bring your own or rent a bike from local shops.

Did you know M22 itself has its own store? M22 is a local company that not only sells merchandise for outdoor/Grand Traverse area enthusiasts but also commit to giving back to the community through donations and philanthropy.

But that’s not the only store in the area you need to stop at! I could go on and on about the different places to shop, but I’ll list some of my favorites in each town below (and include links for you to explore other shops virtually):

  • Cherry Republic ( Glen Arbor )
  • Two Fish Gallery (Leland)
  • Poppy Things ( Suttons Bay )

Food & Spirits

Now it wouldn’t be a road trip without food! You won’t find any national chains on M22, and it would be a crime not to partake in the local food spots.

There’s not as much variety as you would see in a large city, but each restaurant has something for everyone. If you like fish, this is an area that is popular for fish varieties like whitefish, walleye, and cod.

Forewarning: some of these places do not offer delivery services, but they do offer takeout. Some of my favorite places to eat include:

  • Roman Wheel Pizza (Suttons Bay)
  • Village Cheese Shanty (Leland)
  • The Cove (Leland)
  • Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern (Northport)

If you are of age, you can enjoy some of the local drinking spots along M22. While the climate in Michigan is not the same in California in terms of growing grapes, there are dozens of wineries in northern Michigan .

Wine is traditionally made with grapes, but some wineries offer options for wines made from cherries; my personal favorite cherry wine comes from Good Harbor Winery .

The climate along M22 also is ideal for growing hops, so over the years, the area has seen a spike in microbreweries, brew pubs, and other craft beer options . There’s also Tandem Ciders , which makes apple cider [both regular and hard] from Michigan-grown apples.

The next time you’re in Michigan and want to plan a trip up north, M22 should be one of your top places you want to visit.
