10 Top Beaches on the Maharashtra Konkan Coast

maharashtra konkan tourist places

India's spectacular Konkan Coast starts south of Mumbai in Maharashtra and extends for more than 530 kilometers (330 miles) to Goa's border with Karnataka . The Konkan Coast in Maharashtra offers a bounty of beautiful beaches, which are among the most pristine in the country. Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much commercial development and many are practically deserted. In this regard, the best time to visit is during January and February, when the weather is warm (not hot), and it's the low season for domestic tourism. During peak season (May school holidays, long weekends, and Indian festival season) water sports, camel rides, and horse cart rides proliferate on the popular beaches.

The beaches below, which are listed in order of proximity from Mumbai, are some of the most notable. Yet, you won't have to look far to find many lesser-known ones where there is not a soul in sight.

A memorable way to visit the beaches is to take a motorcycle road trip down the Konkan Coast.

Alibaug (also spelled Alibag) is a sought-after weekend destination for Mumbai residents. Many of the city's rich and famous own bungalows there. The town was established in the 17th century and has quite an extensive history. There are numerous old forts, churches, synagogues, and temples all waiting to be explored. The main beach at Alibaug isn't very appealing though, so most people head to the surrounding beaches. There are all kinds of accommodations ranging from resorts to simple guesthouses.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles).
  • Travel time: 1-1.5 hours by ferry, plus another 30-45 minutes from there. Driving time via National Highway 17/66 is around 3 hours.

A little further down the coast from Alibaug, Kashid is more isolated but growing in popularity. Its long, wide beach is lined with casuarina trees, snack stalls, and hammocks. Two of the major attractions in the area are Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary and Murud-Janjira Fort. While the beach is quite empty on weekdays, it receives an influx of visitors on weekends. Family owned cottages and guesthouses provide most of the accommodations as there are only a few hotels in the area.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 130 kilometers (81 miles).
  • Travel time: 1-1.5 hours by ferry, plus another 2 hours from there. Driving time via National Highway 17/66 is around 4 hours.

Diveager is a relatively unknown beach that's not too far from Mumbai. It's bordered by dense forestation. Make your way through it and you'll be greeted by a wide, clean beach with fine sand. Exotica Beach Resort is one of the top places to stay (it's a Maharashtra Tourism hotel, albeit privately managed, opposite the beach). Rainbow Holidays Cottage , in the thicket of coconut trees, is cheaper and also recommended. The town used to have a Ganesh temple with a golden idol but thieves stole the idol in 2012. It's since been replaced by a silver one.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 4.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Shrivardhan

Sharell Cook

The standout feature of Shrivardhan beach is its thoughtfully developed promenade, with benches, rubbish bins, and decent public toilets. This is rare at beaches in India. The beach itself is nothing special though and the main drawback is that most of the accommodations are situated away from the beach.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 180 kilometers (111 miles).

Harihareshwar

Many people head to Harihareshwar, neighboring Shrivardhan, to visit its Shiva temple that houses an ancient Shiva linga . There's a pradakshina route around the temple, along the seashore. A rocky outcrop, accessible only during low tide, makes the beach particularly distinctive. The beach is actually split into two parts, north and south of the temple.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Murud and Karde

Murud and Karde form a long stretch of beach on the Konkan Coast. Hotels and homestays have mushroomed in the area, and there are many options for a beachfront stay. The main attraction is dolphin watching, especially during the winter when sightings are frequent. A little further north, Harnai is renowned for its massive daily fish market. Buy some seafood and get the locals to cook it up for you! Suvarnadurg Fort can also be visited.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 6 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Ganpatipule, Malgund, and Aare Ware

Ganpatipule is famous for its Ganesh temple, located right on the beach. Due to the number of devotees it attracts, the beach is not pleasant for swimming or relaxing. If you're looking for a more serene stay, Malgund beach (just before before Ganpatipule) is a better option. Alternatively, there are a few pricey resorts located away from the temple as well. Untouched Aare Ware beach, south of Ganpatipule, is a must-visit beach. The sea views from the cliffs and road above it on either side are sensational.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 340 kilometers (211 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 8 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Tarkarli, Malvan, and Devbag

If you're prepared to travel the distance, you'll be amply rewarded when you visit these beaches. The area is reminiscent of Goa decades ago before development set in. Its narrow, palm-fringed roads are lined with village homes, and locals can often be seen unhurriedly riding bicycles or walking to get around. The many beachfront homestays and guesthouses make it an appealing and inexpensive area to stay. Plus, the opulent new all-villa Coco Shambhala Sindhudurg provides a luxury accommodation option. The serenity of the beaches is preserved by the fact that water sports take place on a nearby island. Sindhudurg Fort is an attraction, along with the best snorkeling and scuba diving off the Indian mainland.

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 10 hours via National Highway 17/66.

One of the most secluded beaches on Maharashtra's Konkan Coast, Bhogwe is situated where the Karli River meets the Arabian sea. Although it can be seen in the distance from Devbag beach, it still goes virtually unnoticed by visitors as its overshadowed by the popularity of Tarkarli. For an unforgettable stay amid nature, don't miss Maachli .

  • Distance from Mumbai: Approximately 520 kilometers (323 miles).
  • Travel time: Around 11.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

Located only 30 minutes from the Goa border, semi-circular Vengurla beach is surrounded by lush hills. The road leading down to the beach provide dramatic vistas. Attractions in the area include a lighthouse, a jetty where fishermen return with the evening catch, and Vengurla Rocks (also known as Burnt Island) which is excellent for bird watching.

  • Travel time: Around 10.5 hours via National Highway 17/66.

The Ultimate Konkan Road Trip: Harihareshwar, Shrivardhan, Diveagar

https://hayyaahere.com/the-ultimate-konkan-road-trip/

Our Konkan road trip was a last-minute decision after months of procrastination. With an extended weekend due to the Holi holidays, we were determined to make the most of it. However, the peak tourist season left us with limited options, so we embarked on a whirlwind three-day adventure to Konkan. Despite the long drives and challenging road conditions, it was a fulfilling journey. This marked my second visit to Konkan, and I’m excited to share our budget friendly The Ultimate Konkan Road Trip: Harihareshwar, Shrivardhan, Diveagar.

Harihareshwar: A Spiritual Getaway

Harihareshwar, a charming coastal town in the Raigad district of Maharashtra’s Konkan region, is nestled among the foothills of three prominent hills: Harihareshwar, Harshinachal, and Pushpadri. It is blessed by the Savitri River before it flows into the Arabian Sea. This town holds a significant place in Shaivism and is home to the ancient Kalbhairav Temple, earning it the name “Dakshin Kashi.”

How to Reach Harihareshwar

The nearest railway station to Harihareshwar is Mangaon, a stop for trains from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bikaner, and Madgaon. From Mangaon station, you can take a bus to Harihareshwar, which is approximately 60 kilometers away. However, I recommend a road trip from Mumbai or Pune to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Western Ghats. To beat the traffic, we started our journey early, around 6:00 AM, and reached Pune’s outskirts by 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM. We made a brief stop at McDonald’s for breakfast and continued our journey.

maharashtra konkan tourist places

A Scenic Drive to Harihareshwar

As we ascended the ghats, the road conditions deteriorated, and at some points, our speed couldn’t exceed 20-30 km/h due to the challenging terrain. However, the route to Harihareshwar is exceptionally picturesque, even by Western Ghats standards. The winding road meanders through lush green rainforests, forming tunnels of trees. On one side, you’ll catch glimpses of the Arabian Sea and its backwaters, while on the other, you’ll see low hills. The lack of human presence on the road adds to its serenity.

Scenic Route to Harihareshwar!!

MTDC Resort – A Coastal Haven

We arrived at Harihareshwar around noon and checked in at the MTDC Resort. Chose a Premium Suite A/C room, but the resort also offers charming wooden cottages and premium suites in a new building, all located by the sea. We had the opportunity to experience both types of accommodations. For dining, the resort’s restaurant offers excellent seafood and vegetarian options. If you plan to visit Harihareshwar, I recommend booking your stay at MTDC well in advance.

MTDC Resort Beach - Harihareshwar

Harihareshwar Beach and Its Charms

The beach at the MTDC resort is rocky, with black lava rocks scattered across the landscape. Although visually striking, the beach is marred by litter, broken glass, and rubbish. It’s suitable for a brief 30-minute visit but not ideal for extended relaxation.

The highlight of Harihareshwar is undoubtedly the temple of Lord Harihareshwar. Legend has it that Lord Shiva blessed this temple, giving it the nickname “Kashi of Southern India.” We visited the temple in the afternoon, and the interplay of the sky, clouds, sea, and sand created a mesmerizing spectacle that etched itself into our memories.

Harihareshwar Beach - Hayyaa Here

Stairway to Harihareshwar Beach

One of Harihareshwar’s often-overlooked landmarks is the lava rocks to the left of the beach, accessible from the temple. Behind the temple, a stairway leads to a higher vantage point. Here, you’ll find another set of steps (130 stairs) that take you to a rocky patch by the ocean. The view of the Arabian Sea from these stairways is breathtaking, and I recommend catching the sunset for an even more stunning vista.

Stairway to Harihareshwar beach -

While Harihareshwar Beach may not be pristine due to a lack of cleanliness efforts by local authorities, it more than compensates with its natural beauty. The beach, with its fine black sand and calm waters, is embraced by hills on both sides, creating a tranquil setting.

Diveagar: A Coastal Escape

The next day was reserved for Diveagar. We checked out of Harihareshwar and arrived in Diveagar around 11:30 AM. Our accommodation, the Hotel Grand Ambience Resort, offered a welcome respite from the scorching heat. The air-conditioned rooms were clean and comfortable, equipped with showers, TVs (with limited channels), and stunning views. While there are other options available closer to the beach, advance booking is recommended, especially for last-minute trips. My husband, Chirag Mehta, had work to attend to that day, so he set up his workspace in the hotel room while I took some time to relax.

Balcony View from Hotel Grand Ambience Resort -

Where to Dine in Diveagar

For lunch, I recommend trying the local homes that offer fresh thalis. These homes prepare authentic meals, and the non-veg thali typically includes fried fish, fish curry, chapatti, rice, and Solkadi. On the other hand, the pure veg thali consists of chapatti, two sabji, dal, rice, and a sweet dish. I highly recommend Swayum Patil Khanaval, located near the beach, especially if you’re a seafood lover. After lunch, we returned to the hotel to escape the scorching afternoon heat.

Patil Khanaval

Exploring Diveagar Beach

Around 5:00 PM, we set out to explore Diveagar Beach, which combines activities with serenity. The beach has become increasingly popular among people from Mumbai and Pune seeking less crowded alternatives to Alibag and Kashid Beaches. Numerous vendors offer Chaat, Vada Pav, Maggi, Ice-gola, and more. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy water sports, parasailing, horse/camel rides, ATV rides, banana boat rides, bumper rides, jet skiing, and more. The beach is also safe for swimming, and the beautiful sunset is not to be missed.

Diveagar Beach

We decided to come next morning for water sports and activities.

Adventurous activities on Diveagar beach -

The Morning After

The following morning, after indulging in water sports and activities, we returned to our hotel. We had lunch once again at Patil Khanaval, known for its delectable food. After our meal, we decided to explore Shrivardhan Beach.

Shrivardhan: A Historic Gem

Shrivardhan is known as one of Maharashtra’s oldest towns and is renowned for its beaches and Shri Laxminarayan Temple. It’s also famous as the ‘Town of the Peshwas’ because the first Peshwa, Balaji Vishwanath, hailed from here. Both Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar boast majestic black sand beaches and clear seas. Situated on a land, Shrivardhan features several unspoiled, clean, and relatively less crowded beaches. Recently, a beautiful pathway was developed along the beach, complete with viewpoints and benches for relaxation. We spent the remaining afternoon on the beach before departing for Diveagar Beach around 5:00 PM. There, we enjoyed some chai and bhajji while watching the beautiful sunset.

Few pictures on the way to Shrivardhan.

On the way to Shrivardhan Beach

The Final Morning

Our last morning in Diveagar began with an 8:00 AM wake-up call. After breakfast at 9:00 AM, we bid farewell to Diveagar by 10:30 AM, settling all our bills for accommodation and meals. As we set out on the road back to Mumbai, we captured a few final photos of our memorable journey.

Places to Visit in Konkan During Monsoon [Konkan Waterfall]

Konkan Tourism / by Mrunal & Jiten / 3 Comments

Last Updated on February 20, 2024 by Mrunal & Jiten

Nowadays, both parents in the family are working. So, long vacations are not possible like olden days.

Our holiday breaks are short and can happen at any time of the year – summer, winter rainy, spring.

Our kids had a long weekend ahead and so we decided that this could be the best time to take some time off from work. “Why not we go for vacation during monsoons?” I thought.

We zeroed in on my spouse’ native land of Konkan. We also made a list of some popular waterfall spots to see around Konkan and off we went.

Famous Waterfalls in Konkan

Why should one visit Konkan during the Monsoons you may wonder!

Because, there is less crowd, a plethora of economical accommodation options to choose from, soothing climate and greenery all round when it rains in Konkan.

konkan waterfall

Mother Nature has blessed Konkan in large measure with diverse flora and fauna, breezy beaches, hills, rock formations, brooks, rivers, and waterfalls. The highlight, however, is some crystal clear waterfalls that come crashing down high slopes in different parts of this area.

This is a list of the famous waterfalls we visited across two vacations in this incredible western part of India.

SawatSada Waterfall

This Waterfall is just 5 km from Chiplun, emerging from the SawatSada Cliff.

Visit here between July to October to experience the grandeur of the gushing waters. About 250m of walking needs to be done to view this waterfall’s pristine waters and out of the world surroundings. There is also a shed nearby to get some of the amazing views of the waterfall.

The Parashuram temple is close by and a trip to this waterfall could be combined with a visit to this temple too.

Amboli Waterfall

This is one of the Incredulous waterfalls located at Amboli Hill station on Sahayadri hills. A popular picnic spot, it is some 690 meters above sea level. The best time to visit here is June- July.

There are ample parking space and plenty of hotel options to choose from here. Take the flight of steps and get to relax and take a dip in the clean waters of the waterfall. There is a changing facility also available nearby but at a price.

I would give some insider tips too. It gets crowded during common holidays as the area around the falls is small. Beware also of Slippery rocks.

Some popular attractions nearby are Madhavgad fort, Shrigaonkar point, Hiranyakesi temple, Nangarta falls, Durg Dhakoba trekking.

How to reach here: This falls is about 500 km away from Mumbai by road

Chichghar Waterfall

This out-of-the-world falls is located some 10 km from Kudal village in Sindudhurg.

There is nothing like viewing water falling from great heights into the depths of the earth. The Chichghar waterfalls cascade beautifully bringing huge volumes of water down the slope in the Monsoon season. Visiting this falls, we just forget our worries and got lost in the incredulous world of nature.

Garambi Waterfall

Garambi falls is located near Murudright in the middle of a forest in coastal Maharashtra. It falls from a 100 feet high rock. The water is pure here, even fit for drinking.

In case you are planning to visit this falls combine the trip with the following attractions:

The Marleshwar Waterfalls is a series of small streams running down a beautiful hillock near Marleshwar, some 60 km away from Ratnagiri. It is origins is in the river Bav.

People also combine a trip to this amazing waterfall with a holy visit to the Marleshwar Shiva temple nearby. You need to climb 500 steps to reach a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. But the path has numerous shops with food and other curious that takes away the strain of your journey to the top.

Built by Lord Parashuram, it is said to be the holy spot where the divine marriage of Lord Marleshwar (Shiv)and Parvathi took place. Makar Sankranti is an important event in this temple. Surprisingly, the temple interiors have many snakes, but none of them harm the incoming devotees.
