15 Best Things to Do in Michigan City (Indiana)

At the mouth of Trail Creek, this historic waterfront city sits on the southeast shore of Lake Michigan, and attracts tourists from across the region in summer.

Michigan City’s plus points are undeniable, with a fine sandy beach, a luxury outlet mall, a casino resort and proximity to a national park.

You can use the marina as a base for fishing trips and cruises, or simply pass the day lazing on the beach before ambling out to the only working public lighthouse in Indiana to watch the sun go down.

In and near the town are some great museums where you can delve into the history of shipwrecks on the lake, discover the area’s steam heritage and step inside the plush home of the Barkers who made a fortune on the railroads in the 19th century.

1. Washington Park Beach (Michigan City Beach)

Right on the lakefront in Michigan City is a two-mile beach with soft sand, shallow waters, rolling dunes behind and a dramatic view of the iconic lighthouse.

The dunes and relatively sparse development help give the beach a remote and natural feel, and the gently shelving shoreline makes this an ideal place for kids to make a splash, although you’ll need to pay attention to rip current warnings.

After a few years without patrols, Washington Park Beach did have lifeguards during the summer when we wrote this list after the city hiked the hourly rate.

There’s a walkway skirting the eastern end of the beach, offering access to the lighthouse via the catwalk.

2. Washington Park

The beach is one element of a historic park that first opened to the public in 1891.

On the National Register of Historic Places since 1991, Washington Park has a host of interesting landmarks, like the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument (1896), and impressive buildings erected by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.

This is the setting for a zoo that has been around for almost a century, as well as tons of amenities, including fitness trails, the marina, boat launch, fish cleaning station, a splash park, concessions and a historic tennis complex.

Washington Park is a fitting location for annual events like the enchanting Festival of Holiday Lights in December and January.

3. East Pierhead Lighthouse

An enduring symbol for Michigan City, the only public operating lighthouse in the state of Indiana has stood at the end of the East Pier since 1904.

This signal replaced an older lighthouse erected in the harbor in 1858. In good weather, a walk along the pier, dubbed the “catwalk” is one of those things that you simply have to do in Michigan City.

The light was electrified in the 1930s, making the walkway obsolete, but local residents rallied to ensure this structure was preserved.

Accessed via Washington Park, the pier has been a go-to for fishing for well over a century, and is the perfect place to watch the sun go down.

4. Indiana Dunes National Park

Michigan City is at the east end of a national park preserving a vast stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline and the intricate dune systems behind.

Stretching from here to Gary there’s more than 15,000 acres of dunes, oak savannas, bogs, marshes, prairie, river habitats, forests and swamps, all visitable on 11 marked trails. In the immediate vicinity you’ve got Central Beach, which we’ll cover in more detail next.

But behind that is the Great Marsh, a thriving wetland ecosystem supporting green herons, coots, mallards and wood ducks, as well as rusty blackbirds, tree swallows and kingfishers during the migrations in spring and fall.

This environment can be explored on a 1.3-mile trail. Also rich with birdlife is the Heron Rookery, a parcel of inland forest that is stunning in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom. The main visitor center for the national park is 15 minutes away in Porter, with educational displays and educational videos.

5. Central Beach

On the shoreline west of downtown Michigan City is the stunning Central Beach, which falls within the Indiana Dunes National Park.

What you’ll find here is a gorgeous strip of golden sand, walled by massive dunes that conceal a buried forest. In the spring and summer the dunes are a nesting site for bank swallows, and you can see them darting overhead at this time of year.

The dunes reach incredible heights, and one famous peak here is Mount Baldy. Outside of ranger-led programs, the dunes are unsafe to climb as they are riddled with hidden holes left behind by decomposed trees.

On the landward side you can get onto the Calumet Trail, which traces the dunes and Great Marsh southwest for nine miles as far as Mineral Springs Road in Dune Acres.

6. Old Lighthouse Museum

A charming sight at the mouth of Trail Creek is the historic lighthouse that went up in 1858 and served the city until 1940. The Old Lighthouse replaced a previous light from 1832 and in turn was replaced by the current Michigan City East Light.

A total of 7 lighthouse keepers and 14 assistant keepers served at this building across those 82 years. April through October you can head inside to pore eight intriguing display rooms.

These cover the sail era on the Great Lakes, shipwrecks, Michigan City history and much more. On show are models, photographs, 19th-century furniture and a 4th order Fresnel lens.

7. Barker Mansion

The Barker family of railroad industrialists had a vital part to play in the development of the Calumet region in the 19th century.

Their 38-room residence is in perfect condition, serving as a civic center in the heart of Michigan City. The oldest section dates to 1857 and the mansion was expanded in the early 1900s in the Renaissance Revival style of a typical English manor house.

This has rounded gables, mullioned windows, patterned maroon brickwork and dressed Indiana limestone for the trim.

The Barker Mansion was left to the city with much of its opulent interior decor in situ, and stands as a visitor attraction and wedding venue.

8. Washington Park Zoo

Open April through October, the zoo in Washington Park has been part of the scenery since 1928.

Appropriately the Washington Park Zoo is perched on the side of a dune, with winding tree-lined pathways and structures that were built by the Works Progress Administration in the Great Depression, like the Art Deco-style Observation Tower.

Since its earliest days the zoo has been a sanctuary, and many of the animals you’ll see are former pets, recovering from injuries or were seized as illegal.

At the time of writing there were more than 90 species from five continents, and some favorites include fennec foxes, Bengal tigers, lemurs and wallabies.

9. Lubeznik Center for the Arts

Within walking distance of the shorefront in Michigan City is a world-class arts hub for the Northwest Indiana region.

The center was established in 1978, and took on its current name in 2003 after a donation by the local residents and philanthropists Jack and Shirley Lubeznik.

As well as three airy gallery spaces, the center features two classrooms and a gallery shop where you can buy one-of-a-kind works by artists and makers from the region.

The Hyndman Gallery here doubles as a performing arts space, while the Susan Block Gallery has an unbroken view of the lakeshore.

10. Friendship Botanic Gardens

Dotted with outdoor art, this fabulous horticultural attraction opened in the midst of the Great Depression with the theme, “Peace and Friendship to all Nations”.

On Trail Creek, the Friendship Botanic Gardens were designed by the Stauffer Brothers, who had recently created a garden for the Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago in 1933-34.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands donated 200,000 tulips, a Royal Gardener was sent from the UK to design an English Garden, while the King of Persia shipped roses for the Rose Garden.

Awaiting you today are more than 100 acres of forested valleys and hillsides, embroidered with glorious formal gardens.

The Heritage Gardens continue to celebrate world cultures, and there are also imaginative new spaces like the ArcelorMittal Children’s Garden, for nature-based play.

11. Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets

Designed like a cute waterfront village, this luxury outdoor mall opened on Michigan City’s North End in 1987. At the Lighthouse Place you can browse dozens of factory stores and clearance centers, with savings of up to 65%.

Battle of Trail Creek is a tributary of Lake Michigan that extends for 7.3 miles, runs into the lake, and features some of the best salmon fishing in the area. This is also considered to be one of the most beautiful spots in all of Michigan City.

The location is fantastic for enjoying a leisurely afternoon. A significant section of the habitat that encompasses the water body is comprised of wetland areas. Also, there is a rich diversity of flora and fauna in the region. It is possible to catch a glimpse of some rare species, such as bald eagles, as they are flying around. The streams are also dominated by salmon and trout.

This tributary even offers the opportunity to go fishing, especially for salmon. Kenny’s love for restaurants never waned, and he eventually bought the building that presently houses Hammer’s on Route 20 in Michigan City.

Casual American cuisines such as steaks, burgers, pasta dishes, and specialty wood-fired pizzas are served in a laid-back atmosphere at Hammer’s Restaurant . This is a laid-back restaurant and bar that is family-friendly and features a relaxed atmosphere.

The restaurant, which is owned and operated by a family and is located just a short drive from Lake Michigan, serves lunch and supper every day and has a variety of house specialties such as fresh lake perch, barbecue ribs that have just come off the grill, and hand-tossed pizza. 

Catering services, both on and off the restaurant’s premises, are offered in addition to the restaurant’s private banquet rooms, which are perfect for hosting important gatherings and events. The lavish interior furnishings of the Barker Mansion were bequeathed to the municipality along with the property, and it is now used as a tourist destination and a location for weddings.

With miles of pristine beaches and towering sand dunes, Michigan City, Indiana, is flush with coastal charm. Add to those natural wonders a fascinating maritime history, a rich cultural arts scene, and a diverse ecosystem, and you find a premium vacation destination infused with Hoosier friendliness.

Michigan City , located in Northwest Indiana on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, was founded in 1836. It quickly became an important commercial and transportation center for the Midwest. Railroads gradually replaced the ships and barges as preferred transit, but the city’s waterfront setting positioned it perfectly for the tourist trade.

Michigan City is about 60 miles east of Chicago and a stone’s throw from the Michigan-Indiana state border. Interstate 94 provides easy driving access as does the Interstate 80/90 toll road. The closest airports are O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport , both in Chicago, and South Bend International Airport in South Bend.

From my home base in suburban Chicago, I’ve frequently traveled throughout Indiana . A recent media trip, however, gave me a closer look into all that Michigan City offers its visitors. Read on for my personal recommendations.

The Indiana Dunes

The Indiana Dunes are a protected collection of immense sandy hills formed by retreating glaciers and molded by wind and water. The area consists of a state park and a national park that sprawl through forests, wetlands, and prairies in addition to the dunes. American poet Carl Sandburg wrote in 1958, “The dunes are to the Midwest what Grand Canyon is to Arizona and Yosemite is to California.” Millions of visitors every year would agree.

1. Indiana Dunes State Park

During Michigan City’s industrial days, much of the sand was hauled away for glass-making. Preservation efforts began in the 1920s with the creation of Indiana Dunes State Park . It’s the smaller of the two parks, with 3 miles of beach and 16 hiking miles spread across 2,100 acres. Look for the “tree graveyard” where trees were covered and suffocated by shifting sands, then uncovered, along Trail 10.

2. Indiana Dunes National Park

Large swaths of land flanking the state park were accumulated over the decades and placed under federal protection. In 2019, the park was designated the Indiana Dunes National Park , which has 25 miles of beach and 50 trail miles within its 15,000 acres.

The park’s signature attraction is Mount Baldy , a “wandering” sand dune that rises 125 feet high and moves inland about 5 feet each year. You can’t climb the dune because of hidden sinkholes and disturbances to fragile native vegetation, but park rangers give guided hikes to the top several times during the summer.

Pro Tip: Take the Mount Baldy Beach Trail for great views of the famous sand dune from the beach.

3. Century Of Progress Homes

Within the national park is a cluster of five historic homes that were featured at the Chicago 1933 World’s Fair, officially named the Century of Progress International Exhibition. The homes were built to showcase futuristic amenities like air conditioners and dishwashers and innovative building materials. They were moved via barge to Lake Michigan’s southern shore and are being privately restored.

One home is a flamingo pink Art Deco style that merges indoor and outdoor living spaces. Another, clad in porcelain-coated steel, was touted as “affordable.” Too bad we couldn’t go inside, but the exteriors are striking.

Pro Tip: An annual public tour of the Century of Progress homes is sponsored by Indiana Landmarks each fall.

What To Do In Michigan City

4. washington park.

The 99-acre Washington Park is a community gem with 2 miles of soft, sandy beaches to invite hours of sunning and water play. A long elevated walkway on the west side leads to the picturesque East Pierhead Lighthouse. It’s a city icon built in 1904 and is still operational. The park also has a marina, hiking and biking trails, and Washington Park Zoo .

Trail Creek offshoots the lake and borders Millennium Park plaza. Stroll the dock, and you might view the Franklin Street Bridge raise and lower to let sailboats pass through. Pick up a sunset cruise with Harbor Country Adventures . The double-decker Emita II sails along Washington Park and out to the lake.

5. Old Lighthouse Museum

The 1858 lighthouse is now the Old Lighthouse Museum with eight galleries depicting the city’s extensive maritime history. You’ll notice the museum, unlike most lighthouses, stands a fair distance away from the water’s edge. That’s because ever-shifting sands created a new shoreline further north. The beach moved; the lighthouse didn’t.

As you wander through the museum, you’ll learn about Harriet Colfax, a lightkeeper for 43 years during a time when a woman in that role was rare, and the time President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed through Michigan City. If you dare, climb the very narrow spiral staircase to the lantern room at the top for impressive views of the beach and Millennium Park.

I was curious to note an exhibit about the Eastland disaster. I knew about the overturned passenger ship that killed 844 people on the Chicago River in 1915. But what was the connection to Michigan City? Turns out, that’s where the Eastland was headed for a day of frolicking, but she never arrived. A hefty anchor chain fence around the museum has 844 links to commemorate the deaths.

6. Lubeznik Center For The Arts

Just footsteps from the lakefront is Lubeznik Center for the Arts , where contemporary expression is celebrated. You’ll know you’re in the right place by the modern outdoor sculptures and the curvilinear facade that winds to the front entry plaza. Admission is always free.

Within the honey-hued, low-rise brick building is a quintet of galleries for rotating exhibitions, performance space for community cultural events, and classrooms for how-to workshops and educational programs. Recent shows have featured renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and the Chicago Imagists as well as the often thought-provoking and contemplative work of emerging creators. During my most recent visit, various works took root in the forgotten victims of a drug war in Jamaica and the quilts that may have been crafted with coded messages to direct enslaved people to freedom.

Pro Tip: Linger at the Gallery Shop, which is stocked with an enticing array of artisan-made fashion accessories and home decor.

7. Friendship Botanic Gardens

Friendship Botanic Gardens is a spectacular collection of formal gardens, old-growth forest, and greenspace bisected by the meandering Trail Creek, but it wasn’t always that way. Opened in the mid-1930s, the 100-acre botanical park was a regional jewel until the 1960s. Then it was largely abandoned to fall into disrepair and dense overgrowth.

7 years ago, a small group of community activists launched an aggressive turnaround campaign. They applied for — and received — improvement grants, and they solicited donations of time and money from local businesses, organizations, and nature enthusiasts. Their efforts are a huge success, and Friendship Botanic Gardens has been restored to stunning beauty, whether you’re in the mood for a quiet retreat or a vigorous workout.

Within the park are 3 miles of paved walking paths, picturesque Lake Lucerne with an arched Chinese bridge and gazebo, globed street lamps, sculptures and statues, and a concert stage. Many of the formal gardens are themed, like the Scandinavian, African American, Persian Rose, and children’s educational gardens. The newest installation is the health and wellness garden, which is equipped with cardio- and strength-training equipment.

When you’re traveling with friends or family, a short-term rental home keeps the gang together in a comfortable, private space. I stayed at “It’s A Wonderful Life,” a restored 1800s home on a quiet residential street just a short jaunt to Washington Park and the beach. The three-level home has a fully equipped kitchen, living room, three bedrooms, and two-and-a-half baths. Laundry facilities are adjacent to the kitchen, and parking is in the backyard.

Pro Tip: Vacation rentals don’t always provide the same selection of toiletries that hotels do. Ask ahead of time, or bring your own soap and shampoo just in case.

9. The Brewery Lodge And Supper Club

If a rustic cabin in the woods is your nirvana, you’ll be charmed by The Brewery Lodge and Supper Club . A tree-canopied road winds to the boutique hotel, where 12 guest rooms present serene views of the natural surroundings. Explore the grounds for waterways and wildlife or relax on one of the outdoor terraces.

Built in 1930, the intimate timber-paneled main building houses a restaurant and craft beer and wine bar. Despite its name, the lodge does not have an onsite brewery but is owned by the same folks as Zorn Brew Works restaurant and microbrewery in town. The lodge will arrange tours of local breweries, wineries, and distilleries on request.

Erected in 1904, this lighthouse is one of the most popular emblems of Michigan City, and surprisingly, it is the only public working lighthouse in Indiana. 

You’ll find this lighthouse and pier on Michigan City’s harbor.

Take steps and climb your way through the elevated walkway, popularly known as the “catwalk”.

The catwalk was popular in the past since lighthouse keepers used it for 29 years to access the light tower. 

To make it more flexible and beautiful, in 1933, this lighthouse on the eastern pier was electrified.

Presently, the pier is accessible to locals and tourists alike and is a great place to do certain things.

Since this pier is a great spot for fishing and watching sunsets, you can grab a fishing rod and try fishing in the calm waters.

Built in 1905, the Barker Mansion is a thirty-eight-room house, which is presently a museum.

Usually, Great Blue Herons go back to make their nests in mid-March. 

You’ll still be able to see these herons until early May when the fresh leaves on the trees bar the view.

Throughout the rest of the summer and a little into the fall, you’ll find them feeding in shallow waters at the Dunes Region. 

Even though this area is popular for the herons that inhabit it, heron watching is not the only thing that is fun about this place.

From late March till early June, wildflowers blossom and show forth their best colors.

Go for a walk viewing the spring’s wildflowers, listening to birds as they chirp, and catching butterflies.

For something more straining, go fishing or watch fish swim in the Little Calumet River.

There’s also an enormous deal of wildlife to see and it’s just as great as birdwatching.

Try hiking down the 3.3 miles of trails.

Since it’s pet friendly, come with your furry friends, dogs, parrots, or cats, so long as you place them on a leash.

The East Pier’s end has been home to Indiana’s sole publicly operated lighthouse since 1904, serving as an enduring icon for Michigan City.
