Gun review: Winchester’s Model 70 Safari Express is an iconic safari rifle

The Model 70 Safari Express promises to down dangerous game

There is something special about stalking game that can suddenly become a deadly adversary. Such hunts have always elevated my hunter instincts, and driven my adrenalin flow to new heights. The old adage “use enough gun” certainly applies, but a hunter on the trail of dangerous game also requires a rifle that is utterly dependable, fast on point and able to deliver quick follow-up shots when necessary. The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express is just such a gun, and it has “iconic safari rifle” written all over it.

This Winchester certainly has it all, from the front barrel-mounted sling swivel to the checkered walnut stock. Along with the flawless fit and finish, features include a deluxe cheekpiece, Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad, matte finish on all metal surfaces, dual steel crossbolts, hooded brass bead front sight, and one-piece metal trigger guard and magazine frame with a steel floorplate. But as we all know, aesthetic appeal is only the first layer, so let’s take a look at the real guts of this rifle.

It begins with a cold hammer-forged and free-floated barrel with a forged steel receiver and double integral recoil lugs. This double lug feature is designed to eliminate any shift of the barrel and receiver during recoil from a heavyweight magnum cartridge, thereby maintaining the rifle’s inherent accuracy. Next, and a close second, is the Model 70’s MOA trigger that offers zero take-up, zero creep and zero overtravel. The trigger on my test rifle was so precise that, with a half-dozen pulls, the weight fell between three pounds 14 ounces and three pounds 14.6 ounces. If that’s not enough to impress you, there was also no creep or overtravel. This is simply a great trigger.

Perhaps the rifle’s most historic component is the pre-1964 controlled round feed and claw extractor bolt design. The massive claw extractor firmly grips the cartridge base, thereby ensuring complete control of the cartridge from the magazine to the chamber, and during ejection. Ultimately, this offers an all but flawless delivery of the cartridge to the chamber—a must when your life could depend on it.

While it has been around for some time, Winchester’s three-position safety is another hunter-friendly feature worth mentioning, as are the iron sights. The front bead sight showed up well under low light, with the hood helping me find my target more quickly. At very close range and under duress, in fact, you could almost use the hood as a sight window. And while it protects the rifling to ensure accuracy, the recessed target crown also provided the appearance of quality precision workmanship.

TEST RESULTS

I topped my test Safari with a Leupold VX-6 1-6×24 scope, which proved to be the rifle’s equal in every respect. I simply could not find a single flaw in either component—a rare thing, indeed. On the range, this rifle was the most accurate big-bore rifle I have ever shot. In particular, my handloads simply shot lights out. The 300-grain Barnes TSX bullet provided three-shot 100-yard groups that measured 0.25 and 0.31 inches. Yes, you read that right—0.25 inches (below), an all but varmint rifle-type performance!

The factory ammo I tested did not miss the mark, either. Federal’s Woodleigh Hydro Solids, Hornady’s DGX and Remington’s Swift A-Frame rounds all grouped into 1.0, 0.61 and 0.42 inches, respectively. That is superb accuracy.

Because of its diversity, the .416 Rem. Mag. is quite possibly my favourite big-bore cartridge. With more than two and a half tons of muzzle energy, it will readily handle the world’s largest and most deadly game. And with its velocity and inherent accuracy, it’s also ideal for other game where longer shots are required. Unquestionably, this combo will be my top choice on my next trip across the pond, or anywhere else, for that matter, where I need to use “enough gun.”

Realguns.com finds the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express a Real Blast!

Winchester repeating arms article review..

Real Guns M-70 Safari Model Rifle

There is a macho mystique that attaches to big bore “express rifles,” those cavernous boomers capable of dropping a Cape Buffalo or an African Elephant in its tracks with a single, bone-crushing shot.

In the realm of such African rifles the traditional double barrel express gun is certainly an object of awe and envy, often only dreamt about by those who see themselves dressed in khaki, tracking through the dusty veldt after elusive bull hiding in a thorn thicket. With starting prices stretching well into five-figures they far beyond the reach of most mere mortals.

Thus the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express. It’s a very affordable world-class safari rifle with a massive external extractor that offers controlled round feeding – a feature that prudent hunters in pursuit of dangerous game can, and do bet their lives on.

Real Guns Winchester’s Model 70 Safari Express Rifle

Recently Realguns.com put a Winchester Model 70 Safari Express chambered in .416 Remington through an exhaustive live fire test and had good things to report.

“The latest version of the Winchester Safari Express was reintroduced in January of 2010,” stated the Realguns tester. “It is available in three cartridges: .375 H&H, 416 Remington and 458 Winchester Magnums. Anyone of them has more than enough power to convincingly drop the largest animals on the planet, with selection driven by personal preference and regulatory constraints.”

The Model 70 Safari Express is loaded with the features serious hunters demand. “The Safari Express features glass bedded, dual recoil lugs, forward and aft (of the) action,” reports Realguns. “The barrel is full floating. The fancy little cross bolts are both decorative and functional. The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express is plain in execution, well made and a quite beautiful firearm.”

M-70 Safari Model Rifle

“ As a result of having to feed and cycle 3.600" long cartridges, the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express is built on the Winchester long action,” continues Realguns. “The bolt is a twin lug with 90º lift. It has a full length, controlled feed extractor and a gas block behind the left lug. The shape of the bolt knob is comfortable in use, the knurling makes for a useful non-slip surface and the jeweled bolt body is a nice touch.”

Real Guns M-70 Safari Model Rifle Bolt

Rifle weight and ergonomics figure heavily into the shootability of a large caliber African rifle. “The swept pistol grip and longish pull, combined with a very straight 1/2" drop at comb and heel represents good stock geometry for a rifle with hefty recoil,” noted the Realguns tester. “(There is) no Monte Carlo comb to beat the shooter about the head and ears, the soft cheek piece lends good metallic or scoped shooting support, but moves away from a shooter's face under recoil. I've tried many recoil pads, but the Decelerator mounted on the Safari Express is the most effective in reducing felt recoil and the most compact.”

Real Guns M-70 Safari Model Stock

Doing load development for a booming African magnum with a bore size well beyond 4/10ths inches in diameter takes patience and some specialized equipment. “The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express Rifle was shot in two ways; from a bench sled with 40 lbs. of shot containing most of the rifle's recoil and from a standing position with the old guy behind the recoil pad,” noted the Realguns tester. “The Winchester in 416 Rem Mag shoots with...conviction. Considerably more than the same rifle chambered in 375 H&H.”

Many of the groups fired went through the paper at 1 MOA or less. “It is an accurate big bore, even at a distance,” concluded Realguns. “…With both metallic sights and a scope, it was a good shooting rifle. The safety and floorplate release were positive control, smooth in actuation and positive in position. The bolt movement was slick; no big bump when the bolt picks up cartridges … There were no problems chambering a round or ejecting. The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express Rifle is an excellent big magnum and at a very competitive price.”

For Part I of this review click here.

Of course, the final measure of a rifle is how well it shoots. The very first group I fired with this .375, just to get it on paper, was with Hornady 300-grain DGX ammo. The three shots went into .373. This put me into full adrenalin bloat. Luckily, things stabilized a bit, and the DGXs averaged 1.015.

Here’s how my other groups printed: – Handload, 300-gr. Hornady Interbonds .842 – Federal factory, 300-grain Nosler Partition 1.964 – Federal factory, 300-gr. Trophy Bonded 1.232 – Federal factory, 300-gr. Fusion* 1.119

This is about as good as I’ve seen from a .375 H&H.

A couple of notes. The spacing for scope-base screws at the rear of the Safari Express receiver is much closer than for a standard Model 70. (I brought the rifle along when I bought mounts for it just to make sure they fit.) Also, the magazine box fits very, very tightly in the receiver, and when I took the rifle apart to look at the bedding, I couldn’t get the damn thing back in. I called John Blauvelt, who advised me to persuade the magazine box with a rubber mallet, which I did, smartly, and it popped right into place.

The MSRP for this rifle is just under $1,400, and I can’t see how you could get a better working rifle even if you spent a lot more money. You could purchase nicer hardware, and fancier wood, and a dropped magazine, but none of that would help you shoot large, often homicidal, animals. Here is, very likely, the best $1,400 you’ll ever spend on a big-game rifle.

*This is brand-new, and very promising, ammo. More on it later.

Description

The Winchester® Model 70® is the bolt-action rifle that all others are compared to; and the Safari Express rifle is tailored for hunting serious big game species such as Cape buffalo and Kodiak bear. The controlled-round, claw-extractor (same as the "pre-'64" style) grabs hold of the cartridge's rim shortly after it leaves the magazine and guides it to the chamber, regardless of the angle the rifle is being held, and prevents jams caused by double feeding during adrenaline charged encounters with dangerous game. The large claw extractor also provides maximum surface contact on the cartridge's rim for sure extraction of the spent casing; and a solid blade-type ejector reliably clears empty cases from the action. The Safari Express model features a satin finished, straight comb, walnut stock with cut checkering, and a Pachmayr® Decelerator® recoil pad. The stock features dual recoil lugs and 2 steel stock reinforcing crossbolts to handle the punishment from heavy magnum cartridges. Reliable express-style front and rear open sights get you on target instinctively, or back up optical sights when hunting in remote areas. A 3-position safety allows the shooter to load or unload the Model 70 with the safety engaged in the mid position; and the bolt locks with the safety in the rearward position, where it is extremely unlikely to get knocked off safe when carrying the rifle in rugged terrain. Winchester's M.O.A.™ Trigger System has zero trigger "creep" prior to the release of the firing pin, and no "overtravel" of the trigger after the firing the rifle. The excellent trigger, combined with a hammer-forged barrel, and a bedded, forged steel receiver provides exceptional accuracy. The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express Bolt-Action Rifle is an outstanding choice for hunting in Africa or any rugged environment inhabited by dangerous game. Made in a USA.

Model 70-super express vs safari express?

  • Thread starter Rubi_300

Hi guys, I am trying to find out what the differences are between the Winchester safari express and super express. I haven’t been successful finding much here or online. I am thinking about buying a model 70 safari express in 375 H&H but just wish they made a super grade safari express. I know the super express has been discontinued for some time but I’m just curious what the differences are.

JHT

In a nutshell, Super Expresses were sort of precursors to Safari Expresses. A couple of differences are their Monte Carlo stocks, the fold down front sight, the soldered on front swivel stud and the glossy metal. One has to look carefully; however, as not all were CRF. They were also made exclusively in New Haven. Hope this helps.

Matte finish is good for not being seen, but personal choice. Other differences: stock on the Super is is more svelte, different recoil pads (red vs black), and triggers are different. I have a CRF super in 416 Rem, and I really enjoy it. However, at 8lbs 14oz empty with no scope it can be “sporty” from the bench. Scoped it’s robust but pleasant to shoot.

The safari express is double recoil lugged as well.

Are there any options I might be missing for a bolt action 375? The m70s only hold 3 in the magazine and I see on more Mauser action rifles that have a bigger magazine that’s holding 4. 1 extra round isn’t a deal breaker but honestly I think the bigger magazine looks better imo. I saw there were some “custom African express” m70’s that had the bigger magazines but were in 416 rem mag. I love the way they look. Don’t want to drop 15k plus on a Mauser or Rigby. Just curious if there are some other options under 5k that have the bigger magazine.

CZ 550, Kimber Caprivi, Dakota 76 (7-8k) are some other options.

I have the 416 model 70 with the cheek piece but want a good kevelar stock for it without cheek piece .They are awesome guns fun to shoot

Another log to add to this fire. A number of year ago, I bought a Model 70 Custom Express in 375 H&H. It was an old stock, new-in-box rifle made in New Haven in the early 90s. Nicer wood, but I don’t think it’s AAA grade. Polished blued barrel , matte receiver, engine turned bolt. It had a long list of custom shop stuff done. I’ve hunted with it twice in Africa and I’m taking it again this June to SA. I really like the gun, but I haven’t read much about the particular version. Anyone know the story on these guns?

I know this is a bit older thread but I'm looking for a little info on a rifle I've got coming in. It's a M70 Super Express in 375H&H, I was told its an unfired custom shop rifle. It does have a "custom Winchester built and hand fitted" muzzle break with front angled slots which I've never seen before. It's supposed to be crf and was built early 70's. It has nice wood but not gorgeous. So what is "upgraded" on this rifle over the standard grades? Is it worth any more, I paid a pretty penny (to me anyway) for it. In going at least the accuracy is custom shop worthy. Thanks for info guys BTW the barrel is glossy but receiver looks to be matte
