Nagaland Tour Package With Dzukou Valley Trek Overview

Nagaland, a small mountain state in the far east of the country, is home to many wonders of nature. The state with a colorful culture lies between the mighty Brahmaputra and the giant mountain passes of Myanmar. The Nagas also have a history of defending the country fiercely from the Japanese attack during World War II, for which the state still has memorials around Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland.

Monks on Wheels in association with Muddie Trails brings to you the land of festivals with vibrant and diverse indigenous cultures, where over 16 different tribes reside. It’s the state of Nagaland.

The major attraction of Nagaland is the Dzukou valley, known as the “Valley of Flowers”, where in monsoon blooms the Dzukou lily. Dzukou valley is set in a “mountain wave” structure, where the mountains are spread like waves to distances as far as the naked eye could reach. The setting makes you feel like you have entered a whole new world, like a world from the fairy tales, making you awestruck with its perfection.

Our trip will start with an overnight stay at Dimapur, where travelers coming from Guwahati railway station and Dimapur Airport will be picked up and dropped off.

The land of tribes, the capital of Nagaland that is Kohima, will be our first spot of visit. There, we will explore some of the local attractions of the state.

The very unique village, Dzuleke village, will be our next stop. The attraction of this village is that it only houses 34 households, and has no mobile network there! A trek to the nearby waterfalls will be a rejuvenation experience.

Kisama village, which hosts the famous Hornbill Festival every year, is going to be our next destination. The village will also showcase to us the culture of Nagas in full glory, starting from attire to music, and we could also try the local rice beers and foods in this village.

Without a trek to the Dzukou valley, the Nagaland trip will be incomplete! Here, we will be spending 2 days admiring the most beautiful sights of nature, trekking through rainforests and amidst the dwarf bamboo. We will camp under the sky, adorned with a million stars, treating you to some unforgettable nights.

Short Itinerary

Travelers coming from Guwahati can take a train from Guwahati starting at 2 PM to Dimapur, the gateway of Nagaland, from where our team will be arranging a pickup for you to reach the hotel.
And for those travelers coming directly to Dimapur, we will arrange pickup for you at the Dimapur Airport to take you to the hotel.
You will be checked in once you reach the hotel and get settled up.
Dinner will be at a restaurant nearby the hotel, and then we will rest for the day.
Note: Since we do not have a vehicle at our disposal for the day, we will be arranging pickup and drop services to bring you to the hotel.
A pleasant Nagaland will greet you to a great morning!
And you will be bewildered by the sun shining so high very early in the morning, as Nagaland lies on the far east end of the country.
We will start our journey after breakfast. Our driver will pick you up from the hotel, and we will get started with the trip.
Our first destination is going to be Kohima, on the way to which our trip captain/guide will be joining us. On our way, we will also be stopping at a reminiscence of the World War II Cemetery, a memorial that tells the stories of the Japanese Army trying to attack us through the far east and how the brave Nagas defended the country.
The Kohima Museum, where we will head next, will tell us about the colorful culture of Nagaland and the different tribes that reside there.
Our next stop will be at Dzuleke, which is a 2-hour drive from Kohima, a place that is uncorrupted by invading technologies and industrialization. This peaceful place only has a tiny population consisting of just 34 households!
And this can be felt the moment we step into Dzuleke. The calmness and serenity surround you.
The nature at Dzuleke will take you back in time, a time when the vehicles and horns did not pollute the surroundings, where everything moved slowly, and everything got heard clearly.
We will explore this calm village and the households while we are there.
If we have time, we could have a small trek to a waterfall and river nearby to enjoy the view and even take a dip if we need.
You could even catch a glimpse of the setting sun painting different colors on the sky if lucky.
Same as sunrise, sunsets are also sooner in this part of the country.
After spending quality time in the village, we will head back to the warmth of our homestays.
During the stay, we will have a small gathering with all the members of the trip to get to know each other and share stories and memories.
After a delicious dinner, we will rest for the night.
Our day will start with an early breakfast, and we will begin the day’s journey by heading toward Kohima. The capital city of Nagaland will be waiting for us with the beautiful Cathedral Church.
The next destination is Kisama village, which will show you the very different cultures of the Nagas, their practices, and architecture, which will surely leave you wonder-struck.
It is in the Kisama village that the famous Hornbill festival happens every December.
We will take a walk around the village, taking in the Naga culture as much as possible. We can admire the architectural marvel of the Nagas, like the bamboo pavilions and their idols. The Morungs, which are spaces where the tribal people learn and display their skills, are a sight to watch. They display their arts and crafts and even learn to headhunt there!
And if we are lucky enough, we could even try the rice beers and finger foods that come in different kinds and colors at the Kisama village.
We will be staying at a cozy homestay in this village, having a peaceful time and enjoying the warm hospitality of the Nagas.
Before going to sleep, we will have a bonfire and dinner.
The highlight of the trip, the trek to the Dzukou valley, one thing that everyone must have been waiting to get on, will happen on this day.
You can keep your bigger bags at the homestay and carry only the essentials for the trip in a smaller bag. You will be provided with sleeping bags individually, and heavy tents will be carried by porters.
Getting on with the trek, the initial 2 hours of the trek is surrounded by rainforests on the mountain slope. The trails are beautifully maintained by the locals, making it a little easier for those who come for trekking.
After completing this two-hour trek, you will be greeted with such captivating views that you may think that you have entered a completely new world. Dwarf bamboo trees on the rolling hills are some natural wonders to set your eyes on.
The rest of the part of the trek will be a long one taking about 3 hours, but not a hard one. But don’t you worry, the beauty of the trek will make you forget how long or how hard the journey was!
Once reaching the base camp, we can put our bags there once our tents are arranged.
After having a hot black tea, we can hike to the only place where we could get mobile signals, on the top of a mountain peak.
The night is going to be a really cold one. If the weather favors, we could also light a bonfire.
We will rest for the day in our tents assigned after a light dinner.
Activities for the day include exploring a helipad and trekking down the valley. The beautiful grasslands, elegant rivers, and floating clouds are some sights that you could never forget.
This trek which will take us 3 hours to complete, will unfold the breathtaking views of the Dzukou valley even more.
We could take numerous photos and pictures here before trekking back up to the base camp for a hot lunch.
After lunch, we will hike down to the Jakhama village along the rainforest through the mountain slope.
There, our team with the vehicle will be already ready to pick you up.
We will reach the homestay late in the evening and will take a break from the activities of the day.
The trekking and exploring must have made your body beg for rest.
After dinner, you may sleep the tiredness off.
We will have a final morning in Nagaland before ending the trip.
Those who are taking flights off from Nagaland can schedule a flight in the afternoon from the Dimapur Airport.
Our team will drop you at the airport on time.
And those travelers going by train will be dropped off at the Guwahati railway station late in the afternoon.

Travelers are expected to come with an open heart by appreciating the complexities of Mother nature based on seasonal variations, monthly or even daily weather conditions.

Best Time to Travel to Dzukou:

Dzukou valley is best visited during Monsoon and Winter. The monsoon special experience would be from June till August when Dzukou Lillis grow and the valley is transformed into a green carpet of mountain waves.
It is also good in peak winter (Dec and Jan) where extremely chilling temperatures give way to a frozen valley, especially early in the morning.

Seasonal variations:

Mar, Apr (Summer): These are drier months. While the beauty is intact, the experience would be a little underwhelming.
May to Sept (Monsoons): The rains hit the mountains starting from May, and the valley comes alive. Dzukou lilies and Rhododendrons decorate the valley in different colors (especially in June and July). The rains will continue till mid-September, with clouds playing hide and seek.
Oct to mid-Feb (Winter): Clouds give away to clear skies and amazing sunsets. The extreme chill sets into the valley with freezing nights and early morning sunrises. The valley is still very beautiful.

Monks on Wheels will be arranging an Non – AC tempo traveller or a mini bus depending on the group size.

Naga Legendary (6n/7d)

Day 1: Dimapur – Kohima (74 km. 3 hrs)

Meet your car at Dimapur airport, surface transfer to Kohima. Enroute stop at some small local bazaar, tea stop, etc.

Overnight. Hotel/Homestay.

Day 2: Kohima.

Today we start with the World War II memorial which was the last point where the Japanese force were stopped! We shall visit some other places of importance during the war! Next we shall visit state museum, local market,Cathedral etc.

Day 3: Kohima – Khezhakeno (48 km. 1/1 ½ hrs)

Today we shall drive toward the legendary village Khezhakeno. We shall start with a legendary walk in Khezhakeno village where we shall come across stones which possess magical power, monoliths, and traditional houses. Picnic lunch at Cheda Lake. Evening we shall meet and have informal meeting/talk with old and leaders of the village.

Overnight. Homestay

Day 4: Phüsachodu.

After breakfast drive towards Phusachodu. Enroute we shall visit Kade Park at Kami Village and further proceed to Pfutsero Town, this little township at an altitude of 2233.60m is known for its vegetable and fruit products. Sight Scene at Glory Peak, lunch at PfutseroTown. Post lunch proceed to Phüsachodü which is the biggest village under Phek District. This village is believed to be the pathway for the warriors and therefore only the brave had settled over this ridge, for sporting of Headhunting. Overnight at Homestay.

Day 5: Phüsachodu- Khonoma

After breakfast we start for Khonoma village, enroute we shall hold at Jotsoma village for more history which reflects the Kohima war! On arrival you shall check into your homestay for a brief introduction. We shall explore the village; the main highlight of the touris on history, nature and culture! Post lunch we shall have a walk in the terrace field.

We start our day with a ‘nature walk’ where we come across herbal plants, alder based cultivation, hear birds chirpings, etc. Later we shall drive to dzuleke village enroute see the majestic state animal ‘mithun’ , untouched forest, etc. Lunch at dzuleke village. Post lunch venture around the village, later drive back to Khonoma village.

Day 7 :Khonoma – Dimapur (80 km. 3.4 hrs)

Today after breakfast we shall drive to Dimapur to connect your flight for onward journey.

DAY 1 : DIMAPUR- KOHIMA (74 kms/ 3 HRS)

Meet a representative at Dimapur Airport, the commercial hub of Nagaland, get surface transfer to Kohima, the state capital of Nagaland (2 ½ hrs). Enroute we shall see locals selling vegetables, fruits and other indigenous products, which are produced locally.

DAY 2 : HORNBILL FESTIVAL

Morning we shall start our day by visiting some local market and World War II cemetery. We shall spend the rest of our day in Hornbill festival filled with songs and dances, and people in full festive mood with colourful attires. We shall also see shops where you can pick up souvenirs to take home for your dear ones. We then shall have lunch at the festival where you can taste local food. We shall also visit Phesama village in the afternoon

Overnight Kohima

DAY 3: HORNBILL FESTIVAL

Morning we shall start our day by exploring Kigwema village and get some idea about the village life where we’ll come across huge wood carvings in front ofrich men’s houses. Afterwhich we shall spent the rest of our day in the Hornbill Festival. Lunch at Hornbill festival. We shall be looking forward to see more fascinating and ethnic culture of the Nagas.We shall participate in the night carnival at Kohima where we shall see people selling different items from Christmas decorations to chicken barbecue. One of the most interesting aspects of the carnival is the whole street being filled and flooded with people taking their family and friends for fun and dinner.

DAY 4 KOHIMA- KHONOMA- KOHIMA

Today after breakfast, we shall drive to Khonomavillage, explore the village which is 20 km from Kohima.Khonoma village is the first Green Village of the country. This village has taken an odd step by declaring 27 sqkms of its territory as “Khonoma Nature Conservation and TragopanSanctuary” (KNCTS). At Khonoma you will find Culture, History and Nature intact together. Later drive back toKohima.

DAY 5: KOHIMA- KHEZHAKENO – KOHIMA (1/1 ½ HRS)

Today we shall drive to Khezhakeno village, Chakhesang Naga village. It is a legendary village, many of the present Naga villages migrated from this village!

DAY 6 : KOHIMA HORNBILL FESTIVAL

Today full day at hornbill festival till the closing ceremony where there will be fireworks and war cry.Evening at your leisure

DAY 7 KOHIMA – DIMAPUR (3 HRS)

We journey down to Dimapur to connect your flight for onward journey.

Nagaland Tribal Tour

Nagaland is fascinating and a unique destination with rubescent sunlight that provides rays as the sun downs. In our 13N/14D package we will introduce you to the different tribes of Nagaland such as Angami and Konyak with whom you get to live, taste traditional dishes, experience their unique culture and perhaps learn few words of their local dialect. Along with witnessing different tribes our package will also tour you around different places in Nagaland such as Mokokchung, Kohima, Khonoma, Touphema, Tuensang, Mon and take you see attractions such as museums, churches, memorial and heritage villages. Also, visit Longwa village to explore the chief's house that is build between India and Myanmar.

Dimapur - Kohima

On arrival at Dimapur you will be greeted by our representative and after then will be driven to Kohima. On reaching Kohima, you can check in at the pre-booked hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Kohima – Khonoma

In the morning go for a sightseeing tour around Kohima, you can go visit the world war II memorial and the state museum of Kohima. Later, you will be driven to Khonoma Village.

Khonoma Tribal Village

You can go for a walk around the village in the morning and learn about different aspects of their lives. Here, you can witness a unique water system where the water is piped long distances using bamboo. Overnight stay in the village.

Khonoma – Touphema

On the 4th day, you will be driven to Touphema village. Here you can visit the museum displaying traditional jewellery, clothing and other artefacts.

Also, interact with the locals and learn about their traditions and folk stories. Touphema has a number of wooden built traditional Angami houses and guests are welcomed with great Angami hospitality. There are guided walks to go on to nearby peaks and paddy fields as well. Overnight homestay in Touphema.

In the morning of day 6, you will be driven to Mokokchung. En route at Wokha, the district headquarters of the Lotha Nagas. You can explore the town and lunch here followed by a ride to Mokokchung. On arrival, you can rest in the pre-booked hotel.

The next day, you will be taken to visit Mopungchuket. Here, explore the museum and a church followed by a visit to Longkhum where you can walk the stone bridge and see the Doyang lake. After exploration, return to Mokokchung for dinner and overnight stay.

Mokokchung – Tuensang

After early breakfast you will be taken to Tuensang. It is also the largest district of Nagaland bordering Myanmar. It is located near the highest peak of Nagaland, Mount Saramati. On arrival, check in at the hotel/homestay and rest for the day.

On day 9th, you can explore the tribal villages of Tuensang. You may also see the state animal of Nagaland, Mithun and also see the giant monoliths in Longtrok village. Overnight stay in Tuensang.

Tuensang – Mon

You will be drivn to the northern easternmost part of Nagaland towards Mon district. This is the land of Konyak tribe who once were once known as headhunters having tattoos all over their face and hands. This tribal people are also known famously for their muzzle loading guns. On arrival, you can rest for the day in the homestays.

On day 11th, you can visit the chief’s house in Shangnyu village followed by a visit to Longwa village. This village sits in the Indo-Myanmar border. Return back to Mon after a little excursion for dinner and overnight stay.

On day 12th, you can go on an exploration visiting local villages. Dinner and overnight stay in Mon.

You will be driven downhill from Mon to Jorhat, on arrival you can check in at the hotel and rest for the day.

Arrive Imphal Check In Hotel. Visit Kangla Fort, Khwairamband Keithel or Ima Market (Women Local Market) and Govindaji Temple . SHRI SHRI GOVINDAJEE TEMPLE – is an elegant Vaishnavite shrine located in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. It stands adjacent to the palace of the former rulers of the state. The temple was built in the early 18th century by Rajarishi Bhagyachandra. It has a beautiful image of Lord Vishnu , which is flanked by the idols of Lord Balram and Lord Krishna . Shri Govindajee Temple is simple in its architecture. It has two golden domes, a paved courtyard and a large raised congregation hall O/N hotel at Imphal.

After B/fast Excursion to Loktak Lake, Sendra Island 48kms. Visit 1) KEIBUL LAMJAO NATIONAL PARK (one and only floating national park in the world where the endangered dancing deer – Sangai is found) , 2) LOKATK LAKE(largest fresh water lake in north east), 3)INA MEMORIAL(Indian tri color flag was first hoisted here by INA at Moirang) 4) Sendra Park and view point . O/N Hotel at Loktak Lake.

Transfer to Moreh village by car. Moreh is the border of India and Myanmar . . It is the border town of Manipur on the national highway Number 39, surrounded by hills, mountains & rivers which is 110 kilometres from Imphal. It is located on the Indo – Myanmar Road, a commercial town attracting a large numbers of people from neighbouring places.

It is only 5 kilometres away from Tamu , its Myanmar counterpart and is especially the best place for shopping & business. The recent opening of the Border trade turned Moreh into an important commercial hub in North – East. Just on the other side of the border, at Namphanglong , there is a big Myanmar’s market complex where all kinds of Thai and Chinese consumer goods are available at a reasonable low price. You can have a small visit to Tamu (Myanmar part by submitting your i card) . Night stay at Imphal.

After breakfast transfer to Ukhrul ( 6 to 7 hrs journey). A picturesque hill town of Manipur – lies about 84 km kilometers to the North East of Imphal. The place is inhabited by Tangkhul Tribes. The life and art of Tangkhuls are attractive and captivating. Their different costumes and wears, utensils, architecture, monumental erections and memorial set-up depict their dexterity in art, which also speak of their sense of beauty and finesse . Night stay at Ukhrul.

Early morning have a small hike to the Sirui Lily hills . If you can climb 1.5 kms you will enjoy the savana and exotic views. Later after lunch you can proceed to Imphal ( 3 hrs drive).

After breakfast transfer to Kohima . It is 5 hrs journey to reach Kohima. Night stay at Kohima/Kisama .

You will be taken to Khonoma village which is a historical village and also the last base for the Angami tribe. Later, you will be taken to visit the state museum where you can witness the tribal lifestyle and culture of the Naga people . Also sightseeing Kohima War Cemetery (It was build in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives during the World War II ) and Kisama Heritage Village . Overnight stay at the hotel in Kohima.

After breakfast transfer to Dimapur or Imphal airport .

Optional Day 08 on extra cost ( extra day):

You can go to Dzukou Valley trek if you want little adventure and capable of trekking. ( 6 kms one way trek). Dzukou Valley is a valley located at the border of the Indian states of Nagaland and Manipur . Airline seats and hotel rooms are subject to availability at the time of booking.
In case of unavailability in the listed hotels, arrangement for an alternate accommodation will be made in a hotel of similar standard.
Check-in and check-out times at hotels would be as per hotel policies. These are generally pre-decided as per operation schedules.
Transportation shall be provided as per the itinerary and will not be at disposal.
Rates are based on above mentioned pax travelling together, any change in no of pax, days and date of journey will attract re-quote.
THE WEEKENDER reserves the right to modify the itinerary at any point, due to reasons including but not limited to: Force Majeure events, strikes, fairs, festivals, weather conditions, traffic problems, overbooking of hotels / flights, cancellation / re-routing of flights, closure of / entry restrictions at a place of visit, etc. While we will do our best to make suitable alternate arrangements, we would not be held liable for any refunds/compensation claims arising out of this.
It is mandatory for all guests to carry valid photo ID’s (Passport/Driving License/Voter ID Card). PAN Card is not accepted at many places as a valid photo ID.
If your flights involve a combination of different airlines, you may have to collect your luggage on arrival at the connecting hub and register it again while checking in for the return journey to your origin.
Service GST 5% shall be applicable over and above the mentioned prices.
Payment of 25% of Package Cost at the time of booking and balance within 7days prior travel date. Booking is confirmed on payment of booking amount.

RESERVATION TERMS

Confirmation of Tour Package is subject to the remittance of 50% of the total tour cost in advance and rest to be paid prior to the commencing of the tour so as to reconfirm all the arrangements on definite arrival basis. Slight alterations in the accommodation may become unavoidable due to unavailability of rooms in mentioned hotels, but the accommodation so provided will be of the same class. Child below 5 yrs stay complimentary.

CANCELLATION & REFUNDS

30 days before the commencement of the tour: 10% of the tour cost will be levied. 15 days before the commencement of the tour: 25% of the tour cost will be levied. Less than 15 days before the commencement of the tour: 50% of the tour cost will be levied. Less than 07 days before the commencement of the tour: 100% of the tour cost will be levied. No refund is entitled "for no-shows".
