To celebrate the announcement of the release, Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment provided StarTrek.com with an exclusive clip featuring the creative team behind the series — executive producers and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman, art director Alessandro Taini, and co-executive producer Ben Hibon — on how they landed on the character designs for the Vau N'Akat, Gwyndala.

The Creative Team Behind Star Trek: Prodigy on Gwyn's Character Design

Developed by Emmy® Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman ( Trollhunters and Ninjago ), the CG-animated series Star Trek: Prodigy is the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences, and follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Nickelodeon Animation, led by president of animation Ramsey Naito; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers, alongside co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibon directs, executive produces and serves as the creative lead of the animated series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also currently serve as co-executive producers.

The Star Trek: Prodigy voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew ( Hologram Kathryn Janeway ), Brett Gray ( Dal ), Ella Purnell ( Gwyn ), Rylee Alazraqui ( Rok-Tahk ), Angus Imrie ( Zero ), Jason Mantzoukas ( Jankom Pog ), Dee Bradley Baker ( Murf ), John Noble ( The Diviner ) and Jimmi Simpson ( Drednok ).

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 1, Vol. 2 Available For Pre-Order On Blu-Ray And DVD [UPDATED]

| July 10, 2023 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 30 comments so far

Just two weeks after Star Trek: Prodigy was removed from Paramount+ , we have at least some good news for fans who want to catch up on season 1. Pre-orders for the second volume of the first season are showing up online, and we have an update on all the latest for Prodigy and its future.

Prodigy Season 1, Volume 2

07/13 UPDATE: Amazon pre-order links removed. We are currently trying to get clarification on if/when the set will be officially announced and available again for pre-order at Amazon. It is still available for pre-order at Target.

original article

The first “volume” of Prodigy season 1 with the first 10 episodes was released in January on Blu-ray and DVD (see  TrekMovie.com review ). Today, Amazon listed the release for volume 2 with episodes 11-20, which arrives on September 26. The listings currently do not have details on the releases beyond saying they will include 2 discs each. You can pre-order the DVD for $17.99 and the Blu-ray for $21.99 .

At present, there is no official box art or details on special features. Even though the set is also available for pre-order at Target and has been confirmed by Digital Bits for release on September 26, Paramount has yet to make an official announcement, which would traditionally include those details and a first look at the packaging., so it’s possible some details for this release may not be final. TrekMovie will do an update when more information is available.

#SaveStarTrekProdigy

Fan support continues to grow, which becomes apparent when you follow the #SaveStarTrekProdigy hashtag . The Change.org petition has also gained momentum with over 27,000 signatures. Paramount has confirmed that work on the second season continues as they try to find a new home for the series. The team behind the show is still promoting the hashtag and has kept a positive attitude as we wait for news.

Buying Prodigy products, including the Blu-ray and DVD, is one of the ways producers have suggested fans show their support for the show. When news first broke about Paramount+ removing Prodigy Amazon quickly sold out of the first volume, but now it’s back in stock for both DVD and Blu-ray .

The Playmates Prodigy figures released earlier this year also sold out at Entertainment Earth, but the popular toy site is still accepting orders and promises to restock soon. However, the Janeway figure appears to have been canceled and there is no news on a Rok-Tahk figure either. All four figures from Playmates’ first wave (where Murf comes with Dal) are still available and in stock at Amazon .

Prodigy still flying with Delta

There is one place you can still watch Prodigy , at least for now. Selected content from Paramount+ is available on Delta Airlines flights, complimentary for SkyMiles members—and this still includes episodes of Prodigy .

Prodigy coming to STLV

It does not look like Star Trek: Prodigy will be part of the official Paramount+ lineup for San Diego Comic-Con , which kicks off next week. However, Dan and Kevin Hageman, along with Protostar computer voice Bonnie Gordon, are all lined up to attend Creation’s 57-Year Mission convention (formerly Star Trek Las Vegas), which kicks off on August 3rd at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas . Prodigy and Voyager star Kate Mulgrew will also be there.

Definitely getting Volume 2.

Same here, and I’d have said that even without the cancellation / removal. I love the special features and whatnot on Blu-rays and DVDs, and I got the first volume when it was released. I certainly hadn’t anticipated that I’d lose streaming access to a Star Trek show, though; that just made it all the more imperative that I keep getting the movies and shows on disc as long as I’m able.

I read that it had been cancelled due to a failure in amassing any subscribers

Pre-ordered just now from Amazon

Manny Coto passed away…RIP… :(

That’s very sad. Pancreatic cancer is so scary.

He’s left a legacy of memorable shows that entertained millions, that’s quite the professional achievement. He certainly got a good reputation amongst many Trek fans for his work on Enterprise.

I just read saw that, too. His writing brought much-needed energy to both “Enterprise” and “24”. I just listened to his commentary with David Carson on the “Star Trek:Generations” Blu-ray last week and you couldn’t have found a more enthusiastic person to co-host a commentary without making it silly. Sad day indeed.

Oh WOW! That’s sad to hear.

Wow. Had no idea he was ill. RIP, Manny. Enjoyed many of his (Enterprise) episodes.

I was on Delta flight last week and actually saw someone watching Prodigy! My first thought was that I was happy to see someone watching. My second thought was to hope they didn’t like it so much that they wanted to watch more episodes… but now they can get it all on Blu Ray!

I will say with the whole debacle mess they did with Prodigy, I will admit there is one ‘positive’ from it and that is a reminder that physical media is still important. I’m one of these people who has pushed away from it for years now. I haven’t bought a single DVD since 2013 lol. And not because I don’t think they aren’t needed but like so many others I just adapted to streaming and the easy access it has.

But this made it clear why it should never disappear completely either. Of course that said, that’s not going to make a difference if we’ll ever see season 2 or not but at least we can have season 1. So I’ve decided I am going to buy ALL Star Trek on disc now in the near future. All the classic shows and movies from TOS-ENT and all the new shows too (yes, even Nemesis, TMP and Picard season 2 lol). Even if it just sits and collects dust for the next 20 years it will just be nice to have as a back up from this point on. Even more so with Paramount+ sounding to be in a more dire situation and its future questionable.

So I plan to buy all of in the next year. Not all at once lol, just little by little. I will probably start with Prodigy first since it’s the only show I can no longer watch anymore. And then get all 13 films next (and always thought I should anyway). And then start on the shows. It’s kind of exciting now that I’ve decided to do this. I’m even going to buy a special shelf to have it all in one special place!

There is much peace of mind in owning the physical copies of at least your favorites. Good idea on your part. You never know when P+ or whatever streamer is going to pull one of your shows. A good example for me is Miami Vice – have loved the show since it premiered, and it exists on no pay service. (Free on some apps, but with commercials and bad editing, no thank you). Bought the discs years ago, and glad I did. I have well over 200 dvd’s and go back to them often.

All true. And while we have so much content today at our finger tips, as you said there are still tons of movies and shows out there that still doesn’t show up on a lot of these services, especially older stuff like Miami Vice.

And then it’s very weird a movie will show up on a streaming site for a few months or something but then it disappears and it’s nowhere to be found again unless you rent or buy it. I just don’t get how a lot of it works. Like why does one movie stay on a site for literally years and others will come and go in a few months? I know part of that is just a demand for more than others but it’s odd how these things can just totally disappear off of everything while others never goes away? And I don’t mean stuff they own directly like Disney and Star Wars (although as this conversation proves, that doesn’t even matter anymore) but third party licensing?

BTW, I ordered the first set of TOS movies in 4K. Decided to just do the movies first. In a few weeks I’ll get the TNG movies next and then finally the Kelvin movies after that. I probably won’t watch a single one of them any time soon, but as said it’s mostly for peace of mind. So the process has officially begun!

Aside from not having to deal with this sort of nonsense (deletions from streaming services), I do love having Blu-rays and DVDs for the special features and whatnot they (frequently, though not always) offer. Lately I’ve been really enjoying a lot of audio commentary tracks on various Trek Blu-rays.

This is certainly true as well. I do like watching the features stuff. But thanks to YouTube a lot of that usually ends up there now if you just want to watch behind the scenes stuff and audio commentary. I listened to both the First Contact and Insurrection there a few years back. Obviously it’s not guaranteed for anything to show up there and it won’t be everything. But it’s where I have seen a ton of extras there over the years.

But it will be nice to own it directly.

If you haven’t, please sign the petition to save Prodigy.

One thing I am curious about and since I am an international Trekkie that doesn’t really know how stuff work in American companies or media but isn’t there a way the producers of the show could release the second season of the show directly on DVD or Blu-Ray? Do they have to find a distributor? Can’t they distribute it themselves?

They can release the show on home media themselves. But home media isn’t the market it used to be so just releasing Prodigy on disk probably wouldn’t earn enough to cover the show’s cost. If I remember correctly, disk sales didn’t even cover the costs of the TNG remaster, and TNG was a much more popular show and this was years ago when disk when people had fewer streaming options available. Finding a distributor (either another streaming service or old-school TV) would bring in more money for the studio and is probably the only (small) chance the show might actually continue.

Let’s hope they decide to release both volumes 1 and 2 in the UK – still absolutely nothing here. Can’t even get Lower Decks on Paramount Plus here. I will always try buy physical media ahead of streaming – once you’ve got it, no-one’s taking it away from you.

I suspect that one of the reasons that the Prodigy DVD/Blu sales might have been lower than anticipated was because a lot of fans are aware that when there are these half-season releases, when the second half comes out, there’s an inevitable “complete” version also made available, so have sat out the first edition.

also – two blu ray discs for 10 episodes with no special features seemed like a money grab

There are 75 minutes of exclusive special features and interviews on the Prodigy Volume 1 BluRay. Not sure what you are talking about.

Very leery to purchase a season of something I haven’t seen yet. I’ll wait.

sadly, seems like purchasing it will be the only way to see it

This is the only way to see it now, and definitely worth it. The show was recently nominated for an Emmy for “Outstanding Animated Series” and most people say the second half of the season is some of the best Star Trek ever.

I can understand that, but it’s really not that different from buying a new novel or record upon its release, before one’s read it or heard it. I know I for one would both own and have read far fewer books in my life if I only ever purchased ones I’d already read and knew I would like.

Prodigy of course has the advantage of being part of this huge franchise we’re all fans of, so it might be “safer” for you than some other blind purchase of a movie or show. But if you’re still leery, you could try seeing whether it’s possible to borrow the DVD or Blu-ray from your local library, and if so check the show out that way, and then buy your own copy if you like it.

Clicking this article’s link to TrekMovie’s review of the Season 1, Volume 1 disc release from back in February and checking that out again, I came across this gem:

“ Final thoughts

As usual, we recommend getting Trek shows on disc for completists or anyone who wants an offline copy of the show; this includes those who cannot or do not want to stream the show and folks who have concerns about the fleeting rights to streaming media . ”

(emphasis added)

Well… wow. Pretty prescient, TrekMovie. In that longago era of early 2023, who’d ever thought Paramount+ would just remove an entire original Trek series? But you folks at least saw the possibility…

I was going to wait for a box set of S1/2. I’m assuming that might happen one day. But, I pre-ordered it to support Prodigy and the people who worked on the series. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for good news….

Ordered, with the hopes that it has good bonus features like the first volume did.

I previously have only bought Star Trek media when there’s a complete boxed set of the series. I broke this rule for SNW, and just ordered all of PRO. Because of how Paramount is treating this, I’ll probably go buy all of the seasons of LDS that’s out. I’m still debating about DSC because the final season is soon, and the full boxeed set is in the foreseeable future. I’m just hoping nothing resulted in there not being a full boxed set.

REVIEW – Star Trek: Prodigy Season One Blu-ray

James Amey

The story of Star Trek: Prodigy so far is one that will be familiar to many Star Trek fans, and for once, I’m not talking about the plot of season one (as good as it is)! Rather, speaking to the sudden cancellation of Prodigy that happened back in June. Followed by the equally sudden removal of the show from Paramount+ and, in some cases, from people’s Amazon accounts, after they had paid for the episodes! Today, we review Star Trek: Prodigy Season One on Blu-ray!

PURCHASE – Star Trek: Prodigy Season One via Amazon

If you hadn’t heard about this, you now have. As you might imagine, there was a very public outcry from fans, with a lot of that taking place over social media under the “ #SaveStarTrekProdigy ” hashtag. That ended up as a part of this fan campaign taking to the skies itself! A significant contributor to this outcry was the fact that after removal from Paramount+. The back half of the season wasn’t readily available anywhere for some people. However, others were able to purchase it digitally on Amazon.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Artwork and Packaging

The first wave of this boxset to be sent out features a slipcover over a standard Blu-ray jewel case. I expect future production runs, like Star Trek: The Next Generation HD releases, won’t have these if you like them. Place your order sooner rather than later!

Much like those releases, the slipcover is somewhat uninspired. It features identical art wording and layout to the cover of the jewel case. With the slight change, the ‘Blu-ray’ format banner is changed to ‘Season One’ on the jewel case. Where ‘Season One’ is under the logo on the slip. The art itself is also not original or tailored for this release. It’s one of the original promotional images for the show. At the same time, the art itself is fantastic (in this reviewer’s opinion). Something created specifically for this release would have been a nice touch.

Inside the jewel case is similarly unimaginative. The cover isn’t even printed on both sides, which is somewhat amateur. The disks are the standard CBS Home Entertainment light blue. With the show logo, technical logos and episode names on each disk. Disappointingly, if there is a special feature that you really want to see you have to put in each disk one by one or guess. The disks with this content on them just have ‘Special Features’ written on them and there is no episode listing or breakdown of the disks content included separately in the set.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Technical Information

As releases go. This is practically a textbook definition of a blu-ray release. Each episode and all the special features are presented in 1080p HD with a 2:35:1 letterbox format. With the aspect ratio changing on the features to fit archive or interview footage as required.

The visual quality isn’t a major upgrade over the streaming versions. Which is the case for many animated releases. Nor is the sound. The US English default soundtrack is the only one that is mastered to the DTS-HD standard. The French and German tracks are Dolby Digital 5:1 surround sound mastered. Then, the final audio track, Spanish – Latin American, is only mastered to Dolby Digital 2.0 surround.

Subtitles are featured. But only in English – United States SDH, French – Parisian, German and Spanish – Latin American. Matching the audio tracks. Which is somewhat disappointing from an accessibility perspective.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Special Features – Disk One

Prodigy’s first special feature is the only one on the first disk. Its subject is Prodigy’s first fan-favourite episode – Kobayashi. Featuring interview excerpts from creators and showrunners, the Hageman brothers. Brett Gray , who voices Dal and Jack Rossi – Prodigy’s Prop Designer.

While this is a short feature, it contains a substantial amount of footage from the episode it is named after. It’s a delightful insight into the planning and ideas behind the episode, with a particular focus on how it would impact Dal’s character.

The Hageman brothers also speak highly of Aaron Waltke . Who I have had the joy of speaking to on a few occasions and really underline how his passion and love for Trek facilitated the creation of what I now consider an iconic episode of Star Trek . The feature can be found on the first disk in the episode selection menu under Kobayashi the episode.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Special Features – Disk Two

Disk Two has a much more comprehensive set of extras. It includes (in their own menu this time) features: Trek Tradition, The Prime Directive, The Protostar Pack, The Protostar and Gadgets & Gear . Trek Tradition is a lovely feature of how Prodigy came into being and how it embodies the Trek ethos. It features excerpts from interviews with the Hageman Brothers, Alex Kurtzman, Trevor Roth, Ben Hibon, Gus Mendonça, Bastion Grivet, Kate Mulgrew, Gene Roddenberry and Eugene Roddenberry. It includes Roddenberry’s own testimony on how he brought Star Trek into being. The Prime Directive speaks for itself on it’s topic! Prop Designer Jack Rossi presents. Including clips from throughout the franchise where characters have discussed the directive and its impact. While also discussing how Star Trek: Prodigy Season One created the legible version seen in the series with the Hagemans. The Protostar Pack is deceptively in-depth. It’s actually eight features in one. With an individual feature on each main character (named accordingly). Plus, an introductory piece called ‘Creating Character’ with interviews from the Hagemans, Kurtzman, Animation Director CJ Sarachene and Executive Producer Ben Hibon.

While some actors present or appear in their character’s features, others (Ella Purnell, Dee Bradley Baker) do not. These sections also include audition material, early keyframe art, concepts and a look at the 3D models used in the show. So they’re well worth a watch! There is also a particularly heartwarming Kate Mulgrew interview excerpt in Hologram Janeway , but I won’t say more.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Special Features – Disk Two (continued)

The Protostar is similarly in-depth with individual features on the ship design, bridge, transporter room, cargo bay/hangar, crew quarters, engineering, holodeck and… Nacelles. I guess they thought there might have been some controversy like there was for the ample pair on the 2009 Enterprise! There’s a lot of fascinating information in these. Including the unsurprising reveal that the Protostar was intended to be the ‘race car’ of the fleet (explaining those nacelles!

They also speak about story considerations that shaped the design. Such as that, the landing capability was built in to highlight that this crew was inexperienced. So, they didn’t really consider planetary hazards that could affect the ship (otherwise, they would have used the transporter)! For any ship fans or aspiring animation or production designers, this is a treasure trove of information about the thought processes and ideas that shaped the Protostar as well as the considerations they had to make while designing the virtual sets. Like making sure all the characters faced the same way on the bridge so they were all seen as equally important! Gadgets & Gear is similarly in depth. Just focusing on the tech in the show rather than the ship itself. The features focus on: Trek Gadgets & Gear, The Runaway (the land vehicle), Gwyn’s Heirloom, Tricorders & Phasers, Hologram, Vehicle Replicator, Food Replicator and Cloaking Device . Once again a great resource for fans and aspiring (or current) prop makers alike.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Special Features – Disk Four

Disk Four (Disk three has no extras) features The Odyssey of Prodigy, which features the Hageman’s, Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray and Aaron J. Waltke (wearing a Protostar delta!) and others looking back on the season and the themes that they covered. There’s a particular focus on All the World’s a Stage and Mindwalk which seem like they were originally going to be their own features.

Alongside this, they speak on the topics of including Thadiun Okona. The augment angle in Dal’s backstory and why Ascencia has an accent change after her reveal (which was almost given away by a casting call leak). Tying this in with the Diviners’ character growth over the season. Ella Purnell and composer Nami Malumad also make a welcome appearance here, having been missing from other features.

The final two features focus on the production side of Prodigy . One focuses on the planets and how they used the animated format to explore the idea of ‘ S trange N ew Worlds ‘ in a way that wouldn’t be possible in live action. There are several fascinating artistic insights for budding artists or directors on how to use different effects and filters to create an environment and insight from Nami Malumad on how she used music to add to these.

The other focuses on ships, discussing the ‘lost era’ of ship design between Nemesis and Star Trek: Picard . The Dauntless, naturally, is given a fair amount of focus. With the feature exploring its journey inside and out from concept to screen. Did you know the Dauntless interfaces were designed by Trek fan and father of concept artist Jessica Rossier? Living that Star Trek fan dream!

star trek prodigy blu ray

To start with, the bad. This release definitely has its visible cracks and seams like an officially released product. Above, I mentioned that the lack of a double-sided cover for the jewel case is the most immediately obvious ‘shortcut’ taken. But many parts of the exclusive extras give the impression that they were put together in a rush. Many of the interviews clearly took place over video calls, and some of the interview footage was out of focus.

The lack of any included content index or guide for the disks is also a big mark, in my opinion. At the same time, you can guess where some of the features will be based on what they cover. If you’re after one of the more vaguely named exclusives (such as ‘The Protostar Pack’), you could rotate through disks until you find it. Depending on the disk, the features are also seemingly placed at random in either the episode menu, a special feature menu or an extras menu.

But ultimately. Suppose you’re after a physical copy of Star Trek: Prodigy Season One . This Blu-ray set will not let you down. It features all the episodes released so far in the best quality that they’ve been available to date as an added bonus. Once it lands on your doorstep, Paramount can’t (legally) prevent you from watching these episodes again as long as you keep the disks safe!

Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 “Mirrors”

Star Trek: Discovery picks up immediately where “ Face the Strange ” left off, as our protagonists track their quarry’s ship to a hidden, interdimensional pocket of space that holds a few surprises for them and the audience.

Thanks to some sciencing from Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) and Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ), Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) has a way to find where Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and L’ak ( Elias Toufexis ) are. Apparently, there’s a wormhole hiding in plain sight near where Discovery lost track of the criminals’ warp signature.

This wormhole is too small for a Crossfield- class ship to fit through, so Burnham and Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ) – the latter of whom is on a mission to rehabilitate Moll, if possible – take a shuttle and see what’s on the other side of the wormhole’s aperture. Find a surprise, they do indeed, as the I.S.S. Enterprise , the evil version of the heroic Starfleet ship, is nestled in the wormhole – albeit without its crew, which apparently evacuated the vessel at some point. It’s beaten to hell and serves as a refuge for Moll and L’ak, whose own ship was destroyed by the interdimensional pocket of space’s destructive environment.

star trek prodigy blu ray

Discovery writers sure can be sneaky! They’ve been foreshadowing the appearance of a Constitution -class for the last two episodes; remember when Gen Rhys ( Patrick Kwok-Choon ) and Commander Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) both remarked the Connie was their favorite ship? As we’ll see, this isn’t the last bit of foreshadowing that comes true in this episode.

“How did it end up in interdimensional space?” “I don’t know. Must be one hell of a story.” – Book and Burnham upon seeing the I.S.S. Enterprise

Astute viewers will recognize an often-used cost-saving measure in the annals of Star Trek history: the reuse of sets from another concurrent show. (Seriously, rewatch TNG , DS9 , and Voyager and you’ll be surprised how often props and sets are reused between those shows.) As Burnham and Book explore various halls and rooms, including the bridge and sickbay, the familiar surroundings seen in Strange New Worlds are subtly transformed by Mirror Universe iconography. While nods to the iconic starship Enterprise are always appreciated, our initial reaction to this surprise location—admittedly tinged with pessimism—is that it’s of course it’s the Enterprise . A practical move, perhaps, to keep expenses in check. By Grabthar’s hammer… what a savings.

Finding the ship deserted sure is strange, and Burnham and Book ascertain Moll and L’ak are in sickbay, presumably with the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle. But first, the pair check out the transporter room, which holds some strange items, such as blankets, children’s toys, and a locket that holds a picture of two people, which Burnham inexplicably decides to take with her. Moreover, the dedication plaque of the I.S.S Enterprise tells the story of the ship and its crew: the Terran Universe emperor seemingly tried to make changes to the way things were done in that evil universe, and the Enterprise escaped and picked up refugees who were trying to flee the Terran Universe and enter the Prime Universe.

One of the leaders among those on the Enterprise was a Kelpien, who Burnham deduces must have been the Mirror Universe version of Saru, and that the crew must have fled the Enterprise once it got stuck in the interdimensional pocket of space. Is it just us, or does this sound like a potential episode of Strange New Worlds ?

star trek prodigy blu ray

Burnham, Book, Moll, and L’ak face off in sickbay, where Burnham makes a startling connection between L’ak and a particular dilemma he is facing. The criminal pair hope to use the Progenitor treasure to clear L’ak’s Breen blood bounty. Yes, L’ak is Breen, that enigmatic and masked species from Deep Space Nine . Neato!

The rest of the episode bounces between what’s happening on the Enterprise , and flashing back to how Moll and L’ak first met and became romantically involved. Moll, the courier, would do business on the Breen space station on which L’ak, a member of a royal Breen family, was posted. The two connected over L’ak’s recent demotion and efforts to fight the embarrassment that came with it.

Over some time, the two became nearly inseparable, and L’ak even took the bold step with Moll by showing her his face – a big deal in Breen culture, as keeping their masks on allows them to retain their true, semi-transparent form, and not the solidified appearance we’ve seen on L’ak. Their relationship is tested when L’ak’s superior (and uncle), Primarch Ruhn ( Tony Nappo ) decides to interrupt their courtship. L’ak doesn’t take kindly to being asked to kill Moll, so the Breen turns on his own people, earns a Breen blood bounty, and flees with Moll. The pair now share a goal: earn enough latinum to retire on an (unnamed) fabled planet somewhere in the Gamma Quadrant, free from the trials and hardships of the courier life.

Suffice it to say, “Mirrors” is most memorable because it casts a welcome light on the shadowed backstory of this season’s main villains. Moll and L’ak are now a relatable pair, star-crossed lovers who are hell-bent on earning themselves a happy ending. As much as we don’t want to see the Progenitors’ tech get into the wrong hands, who now doesn’t want to see everything work out for Moll and L’ak?

star trek prodigy blu ray

Anyway, the quartet still need to get off the Enterprise , but the shuttle on which Burnham and Book arrived is destroyed by the turbulent pocket of space. With mere minutes to spare before the Enterprise is destroyed by the wormhole’s tiny aperture, Book and Moll share some last-minute words about their shared relationship with the late Cleveland Booker, and how Book hopes Moll makes the right choices regarding her quest for the Progenitor tech. Burnham, meanwhile, engages in a melee with L’ak, and the Breen ends up injured and inadvertently relinquishes control to Burnham of the next map piece in the Progenitor puzzle. The courier and disgraced Breen end up escaping the ship in a convenient Terran warp pod, leaving the chase between our heroes and enemies for another day.

“If we hit it precisely with a sequential hexagonal pattern, it should stay open for approximately sixty seconds. But once it collapses, it’s gone for good.” “Why hexagonal?” “Doesn’t matter… it’ll work.” – Adira ( Blu del Barrio ), Rayner, and Stamets as the crew finds a way to get the wormhole aperture bigger. We think this line from Stamets is reflective of the evolving working relationship between the results-orientated Rayner and the crew, and how this relationship is getting better the longer Rayner is first officer.

Burnham devises a novel way to signal her first officer for help in getting the Enterprise through the aperture: a pulsing tractor beam emitting from the Enterprise , shot through the wormhole’s opening, in a numerical sequence featured in a famous play from Kellerun culture. Rayner is then able to lead his crew to devise a way to pull the Enterprise into normal space.

The sequence where Rayner is faced with command of a ship tasked with the near-impossible rescue of his captain is the best of the episode. It’s no secret Rayner was knocked down a few pegs after his demotion and reassignment to Discovery , but that lack of confidence and inner angst is demolished thanks to Rayner listening and working with his bridge crew to save the Enterprise . Plenty of lesser-known bridge officers get a say in how Discovery could help the Mirror ship, and lightning-fast decision-making shows Rayner back on his game.

The last element to note about this episode is some emotional trouble Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) is having. Tilly provides an outlet for this angst. Culber explains the experiences he’s had in the last few years – namely dying, coming back to life, and being a Trill host – really put into perspective the intellectual journey he is on in the face of the Progenitor’s quest. Tilly helps him realize he isn’t only experiencing an intellectual quest, but a spiritual one. This conversation is just another instance of Discovery setting up some wild expectations for what the crew might ultimately discover at the end of the season – something beyond the bounds of science, perhaps?

star trek prodigy blu ray

Even though their prey gets away again, Burnham and her crew have the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle, and it is hiding in the I.S.S. Enterprise ’s sickbay. Hidden in the map piece Burnham grabbed from L’ak is a vial, which Stamets will analyze soon. Burnham learns the crew who escaped from the I.S.S. Enterprise ended up in the Prime Universe and were able to start new lives. A Terran scientist aboard the Enterprise , Dr. Cho, ended up being a branch admiral, and we’re meant to assume she was one of the scientists on Dr. Vellek’s team hundreds of years ago as they studied the Progenitor tech. Dr. Cho then hid her piece of the Progenitor puzzle aboard her old ship as a symbolic gesture of her ability to find freedom in a new universe.

Discovery continues its final season with another thumbs-up episode that serves an important lore-building role in the franchise. Seeing the Breen again is a joy, especially since we were staring at one the whole time and never knew it. And how striking was that Breen space station where L’ak was based? Another important note for Star Trek historians is that now the Mirror Universe Enterprise is in the 32 nd century, and stationed near Earth thanks to Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detmer piloting the ship back to Federation space. Will we see that ship again this season?

As the Progenitor puzzle deepens, so do the emotional stakes for our crew, exemplified by Culber’s introspective journey, the subtle reignition of Book and Burnham’s relationship, and Rayner’s triumphant return to leadership. We’re now at the halfway point in this season, so there’s still plenty of time for surprises, emotional consequences, and expectation-setting for this eagerly awaited treasure.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Hopefully, you’re watching this episode with subtitles on, because goodness is it hard to hear what masked Breen says.
  • The Mirror Universe version of the U.S.S. Enterprise was last seen in the Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror,” albeit this wasn’t the Strange New Worlds version of the ship. Likewise, the Terran version of Spock, whom Booker asks if Burnham ever met, was in that same episode.
  • How did Adira conclude they were the one who brought the time bug aboard Discovery ?
  • Why didn’t Burnham and Book try talking down Moll and L’ak before diving into the room with the holo-projected doubles?

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery stream Thursdays on Paramount+ , this season stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).
