Okarito Boat EcoTours

okarito boat eco tours

Swade and Paula, your guides, have been living in South Westland for over 30 years.

The tours include the Early Bird Tour, all-embracing 2-hour EcoTours, and the Okarito Wetlands Tour.

The Early Bird tour is perfect for early summer and summer conditions – and it’s outstanding for photography with glorious light and generally very calm conditions. This may be the best time to see birds feeding on the lagoon.

The Eco Tour takes two hours and is our most all-inclusive tour and covers flora and fauna from plants and trees (including rainforest orchids) to the tidal lagoons and wading birds.

The Okarito Wetlands Tour is our most concise tour, just right for an introduction to the Okarito Wetlands. Because it’s in the afternoon, you can have this as an added bonus after your morning adventures. You’ll learn about this amazing wetland environment form sea to mountains.

Okarito is a revered and truly special place renowned for its diverse bird life and stunning natural landscapes that stretch from the shores of the Tasman Sea to the tops of the Southern Alps.

Home to unique birdlife, plants and aquatic species, the Okarito wetlands are NZ’s largest, unmodified and intact ecosystem, renowned for its mountains to sea intact ecosystems and biodiversity.

Paula and Swade are passionate and enthusiastic hosts and will soon have you engaged in learning the fascinating stories of life and living in Okarito.  Established in 2008, they will share their vast knowledge of the area’s heritage, diverse and abundant bird life, wetland and rainforest plants as well as their own efforts living sustainably - from balancing tourism to conservation and predator control and living n a small, remote village in the midst of the South Island’s wild west coast.

Tour options

(for groups minimum 8, maximum 24 pax)

Our EcoHeritage Tour is particularly suited for groups.  With a comfortable capacity for 12 onboard, we also include an addition to the tour with an easy walking Heritage tour - delving back into the past of this small settlement.  Once home to thousands, the population now sits at about 35 - vastly different to the boom and bust days of the mid 1800’s gold rushes.

Capacity for this comprehensive tour is 24 - with half the group walking with Paula of Okarito Boat Tours, while Swade takes a group out on the waterways, then reversing the groups.  All groups, regardless of size (8 minimum) will have private charters.

Also included is a visit to Donovan’s Store - the West Coast’s oldest remaining building from the gold rush era and formerly the Club Hotel - now a Historic Places Trust Category 1 building.

A delicious 3 course lunch is served up here and more time to chat about the community, past, present and future and some of the fascinating people who have called Okarito home.

There is also a photo exhibition on display from award winning, local photographer  Andris Apse showcasing a glimpse of the people within their homes of Okarito.

Okarito Boat EcoTours

A short scenic drive* from Franz Josef, a tour of the Okarito lagoon and rainforest waterways transports visitors to a place untouched by the passage of time.

As the open air boat departs the historic wharf shed guests are instantly engaged in the sights and sounds of the tidal flow of the estuary, the birds wading and feeding about, from the great white heron slowly stalking its prey - guests may see the catch, hear the splash as the bird grasps a small flounder…or watch the comical royal spoonbills as they swish back and forth through the water sieving for food.

From the open expanse of the lagoon guests travel further up into the narrow rainforest waterways and seek out orchids hanging from the ancient trees, listen to the call of bell birds and tuis, drifting quietly to a place back in time, immersed in a bounty of nature.

With magnificent landscapes on clear days, guests may see the Southern Alps reflected beautifully in the still waters of the lagoon - even on a cloudy day there are forest reflections in the glassy calm waters.

A spectacular sensory experience - come step back in time and explore the untouched serenity of Okarito.

Two tours daily and options for private charters:

The Okarito EcoTour: The most popular tour is the all encompassing 2 hour EcoTour. Watch for a variety of wading birds, learn about the wetlands and pause for mountain and reflection photos on clear days. Drift slowly up the rainforest waterways, pausing for a hot drink and snack along the way.

Early Morning Private Charters: Whether for just yourself, a family, fellow photographers or small group, a private charter enables us to focus completely on your interests.  From landscape or wildlife photography, or just simply having the place to yourselves for a very unique and special time on the water in the early morning light.  Ideal for photography groups - flexible departure times.  Must be booked in advance.

The surrounding landscape is simply stunning – on a clear day we’ll see Mt Cook and Tasman, Franz Josef Glacier – an amazing backdrop to the ancient kahikatea forest and wetland rushes in the foreground.  Plenty of opportunity for photos of birds and landscapes.

Ōkārito Boat Tours

Daily tours & private charters.

We’ll show you as much as we can on our popular 2-hour Eco Tour via the Explorer Douglas – this flat bottomed open air boat was custom built for the lagoon – we cruise along at slow speeds and often drift alongside feeding white herons, godwits, oystercatchers and dotterels.

Ōkārito Eco Tour

Our most popular tour is the all encompassing 2 Hour Eco Tour departing at 9 AM (sometimes an additional departure at 11:30).  This tour departs from the Ōkārito Wharf and heads up the main lagoon channel.

We’ll watch for a variety of wading birds along the way, tell you about the wetlands and conservation efforts and programs in full force! and on clear days, pause for mountain and reflection photos.  Then we drift slowly up the rainforest waterways, stopping for a hot drink and snack along the way.  So much to see on this tour including exploring a bit further up the inland waterways and plenty of time to interact – questions and comments always encouraged!

Discover Ōkārito Tour

This tour encompasses so much of this West Coast gem – Ōkārito.  The birdlife and biodiversity of this pristine waterway system reaches from the Tasman sea to glaciers and the tallest peaks of Aetoroa.  Discover Ōkārito and discover the flora, the fauna, the heritage and the people of this unique and diverse seaside settlement.

Your tour begins with a thoroughly all encompassing two hours with your guides Paula and Swade –  a local Ōkārito couple who have run Ōkārito Boat Eco Tours for 16 years – discovering the inland waterways of the Ōkārito wetlands and rainforest.

While watching for the wide variety of wading and forest birds along the way, you may also have some wonderful photographic opportunities for mountain vistas and to see the complexity of this incredibly diverse environment from the tops of the tallest peaks to the rainforest and right down to the wetlands adjacent to the Tasman Sea – a true mountains to sea landscape complete with Franz Josef Glacier, Mount Cook and Tasman and more.

Learn of the exciting conservation work and predator control being undertaken in this area and witness the benefits with the steadily increasing species and sightings of some of NZ’s rarer birds.  Hear the stories of the rowi – the Ōkārito brown kiwi – and how it helped lead to  changes in the industry of the West Coast and to the extensive conservation work and successes this has led to.

Then on to discovering the past, present and future of Ōkārito from its heritage to its forests and bird life, to restoration work being undertaken by both Glacier Valley Eco Tours – your on shore guides – and Ōkārito Boat EcoTours.  Both local/family run operators also head up the Ōkārito Plants Trust and are involved in numerous projects for restoring our biodiversity within the community, Franz Josef, Whataroa and beyond on the West Coast.

Learn of the delicate and intricate life of the “small world” of the forest – from carnivorous sundews to the bright blue of the entoloma mushrooms, the ferns and of course the birds of the forest.

You will have the opportunity to plant a tree, grown from seeds that we have sourced, propagated and prepared for planting – you can help contribute to the ongoing diversity of this beautiful landscape and be a part.

You will leave feeling part of this very unique West Coast seaside community – yours to Discover – Ōkārito.
