Airports & Entry

An emergency passport will not be accepted unless you also have an approved visa, no matter the length of your stay. There should be at least one page available for a stamp when you arrive.

There are three major airports in the area of Paris, France. The one you fly into will most likely be determined by the airline you are using. Tip #1: Wear Comfortable Shoes

Tip #2: Bring a Jacket, and Maybe Gloves Too

It is usually very damp inside the catacomb tunnels. On top of that, the temperature is 15 degrees Celsius year-round. This equates to less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. For most, this is a bit chilly at the very least. Most visitors are comfortable with a light jacket. However, having a thin pair of gloves won’t hurt either.

Tip #3: Invest in a Guided Tour

Because the number of guests in the tunnels at any one time is just 200, the lines to obtain a general admission ticket are usually very long. By purchasing a priority ticket through a guided tour, you can skip the lines at the entrance and go right in.

Another added bonus is that you will have a tour guide that can tell you much more about the Paris catacombs. Some tours even allow you to see areas of the tunnels that most don’t.

Tip #4: If Not, Arrive Early

Getting Around

There’s no shortage of ways to get around in Paris. The most popular, effective, and affordable way is the Metro. You may find it a bit intimidating at first due to the sheer number of lines and routes, but after a few trips to an attraction or restaurant, you’ll be riding the Metro like a pro.

You can purchase single ride tickets or a batch of 10. If you’re going to be in Paris longer there are also ride passes.

While traditional taxis can be quite expensive in the city, Uber offers some fairly inexpensive ways to get around town if traveling by car is best.

There are three queues present at the Catacombs. One is designated for visitors who have not booked their tickets in advance.

Access conditions

The tunnels of the Catacombs of Paris are located 20 meters underground. The temperature is around 14°C (57°F) with relatively low lighting.

The tunnels in the Catacombs can be narrow, and the ground may be slippery or dirty. As a result, the visit is not recommended for individuals with reduced mobility, claustrophobia, heart or respiratory conditions, or those who are sensitive and likely to be disturbed by the environment. The atmosphere can also be anxiety-inducing for individuals with psychological or mental disabilities.

To access the Catacombs, you will need to descend a staircase of 131 steps. You will also need to climb 112 steps to exit the ossuary. Wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are not allowed.

Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Book your tickets in advance: The lines can be quite long (up to 2 hours of waiting time), so booking in advance will save you a lot of time with skip-the-line access.

The inside story

The Catacombs of Paris contain the bones of more than 6 million Parisians, transferred from different cemeteries of the capital for safety issues between the late eighteenth century and the mid-nineteenth century. This underground labyrinth is housed in the old quarry galleries (whose stones were used for the construction of the city). To get into the catacombs, visitors must go down the 213 steps reaching 20 meters underground to travel the almost two kilometers of tunnels open to the public (less than 1% of all the catacombs). The temperature is constant: 14 °, all year round.

Underground Paris is open to visitors and offers a very surprising spectacle: more than 6 million human bones strewn along the length of the tunnels, profane poems and texts scattered along the way, which will make the most curious hold their breath. A unique place in the world that offers the most courageous journey beyond time.

The Catacombs of Paris are open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 8:30 pm and most holidays (except January 1st, May 1st, and Christmas).

Catacombs Of Kom Ash-Shuqqafa

Not all of the ancient historic archeological attractions of Egypt is from the Ancient Egyptian period. The Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa are located in Alexandria and date from the Roman period.

These are made up of 3 levels and have some 300 bodies. They have a maze of passageways and rooms and represent a blend of Roman, Greek, and Egyptian elements.

Old St. Patrick Cathedral's Mini Catacombs

New York City's Old St. Patrick Cathedral offers a rare opportunity to see incredible catacombs in the United States. Old St. Patrick's Cathedral was consecrated in 1815 and is one of the historic attractions of Manhattan.

Underneath the cathedral are mini catacombs currently made up of 35 family crypts and 5 clerical vaults.

The Catacombs are committed to offering services to the widest possible audiences. However, they are not accessible to wheelchair users and others who need step-free access due to the site’s underground constraints. We do not recommend visits by : - individuals with a motor disability - individuals with cardiac or respiratory insufficiency

In the Paris Catacombs, there are 131 steps to go down and 112 steps to climb up.

Duration of visit

For this 1.5 km circuit, plan on an hour-long visit.

Temperature

The average temperature is 14°C, and it can be very humid. 

How to dress ?

You can leave your boots at home, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes! However, waiting in front of the entrance can be long, even in winter, so don’t forget to dress warmly. 

What if I have a big bag? A motorcycle helmet? A stroller?

To ensure safety and preservation of the ossuary, it is prohibited to enter the Catacombs with a suitcase, a large bag or a motorcycle helmet . Bags no larger than 40x30x20 cm are allowed. They must be carried on the front or held at your side.

There is no cloak room because the exit is located at 21 bis, Avenue René-Coty, nearly 700 meters from the entrance.

Strollers are not allowed either. Please use a baby carrier.

Prohibitions

To ensure preservation of the site, you must not eat or drink on the site circuit, and animals are not allowed.

Any kind of alcohol is prohibited .

And, of course, you must not touch the bones, which are the fragile remains of millions of Parisians.

Photos for private use are authorized, but you must not use a tripod or bulky material that may get in the way of other visitors. You may use the flash without disturbing other visitors.

This is a list of some of my favorite hotels in Paris since they are all semi-affordable and clean. I’ve included recommendations in several arrondissements so you can pick and choose the area you prefer. Without further ado, my favorite affordable hotels in Paris when you’re traveling for work or on a budget, but want to stay somewhere nice!

Hotel Monte Cristo

€€€ | 4 Star | 5th Arr. | Exotic | Indoor Pool

Hotel Monte Cristo has a really cool middle-eastern vibe to it which makes it fun to stay at. The price is actually very good considering its central location, central style, and great reviews.

The hotel pool is likely large enough to do laps and also has a romantic setting which is the best of both worlds. The hotel location is central but not reasonably within walking distance to the Seine.

This location is right on the edge of the Latin Quarter which is full of great bars, restaurants, and things to do at night. It is also located to a few well-connected metro stations which can get you to the Eiffel Tower or other monuments.

Hôtel Du Haut Marais

€€ | 3 Star | Le Marais (kind of) | 3rd Arr.

This hotel is my “go-to” hotel for business trips. It offers a lot of space in a modern, but cool space right in the center of Paris. Clean beds that are comfortable with all the amenities you’d want and sometimes even more.

Some rooms have cool soaker tubs that work great for a romantic stay or after a long day of walking around Paris! The hotel claims “Le Marais” but is about a block outside the unofficial boundaries. That said, it is basically right there and the price is right. I’ll take it!

Hotel De Seine

Hotel De Seine is in an amazing location with a great price. Very close to the Seine, hence the name, on the left bank (rive gauche).

It is right on the border of the Latin Quarter, who’s food scene I prefer over Le Marais, and walking distance to the Louvre, Notre Dame, Ile Saint Louie, and the Luxembourg Gardens. Love this location and the price.

Rooms are nice enough for me and some have mini-balconies with decent street views. They have a classic design that makes you feel like you are an aristocrat at a decent price.

Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc Le Marais

€€ | 3 Star | Le Marais | 4th Arr.

For a relatively inexpensive hotel, Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc is located in a great area, is clean and stylish. No, you won’t stay in a suite formerly occupied by Joséphine Bonaparte, but do you really need to?

Le Marais is very close to the two major Seine islands, the Louvre, Latin Quarter, and has a great food scene. I personally try and choose a new area each time I visit Paris, but would recommend Le Marais above all for first-time visitors to Paris.

Hotel de Flore

€€ | 3 Star | Montmartre | 18th Arr.

Montmartre is a neighborhood known for three things. First, burlesque shows at the Moulin Rouge and other “adult” establishments. Second, amazing elevated views of Paris from Sacre-Cœur Basilica. Finally, a really cool local food scene.

This hotel is a clean and inexpensive option that puts you in a cool area with great access to central Paris.

Hotel Eiffel Blomet

€€ | 4 Star | 15th Arr. | Indoor Pool

This is an incredible find for its location, price, and value. The indoor pool is most definitely built and design for health conscious travelers who want to get their morning laps in.

Beyond that, the price is extremely low for a 4 star hotel in the center of Paris with its caliber of reviews. I highly recommend this hotel for the budget conscious traveler who wants to get a lot from there money.

Les Jardins de Mademoiselle

€€€ | 4 Star | 15th Arr. | Trendy | Indoor Pool

Les Jardins de Mademoiselle is a cool hotel in the 15th arrondissement of Paris which is relatively close to the Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars .

Unlike staying at the Ritz or Four Seasons , this hotel won’t cost you an arm and a leg and it has a nice indoor pool for your kids to swim in. It is not massive, but could possibly be large enough to do laps in. You may just have to do more than usual.

Hôtel & Spa La Belle Juliette

€€ | 4 Star | 6th Arr. | Clean & Basic | Indoor Pool

Another great find in terms of price, location, and ambiance. Hôtel & Spa La Belle Juliette has all the creature comforts you want and more. The hotel-style has youthful undertones and a positive feel. All-in-all, it is a clean and cool hotel with an indoor pool for a super-low price.

Like many other hotels in this category, Hôtel Madison is located on the left bank or “rive gauche”. There are tons of nearby cafes, bars, and cool restaurants. You are also reasonably within walking distance of Notre Dame, the Louvre , the Luxembourg Gardens, and a short taxi from the Paris Catacombs .

All in all, this one of the hotel I am likely to consider for a stay in Paris due to it being comfortable, in a great location, and reasonably priced.
