Why don’t you pay us a visit when you come to Delhi the next time. Or Why don’t you make us a visit when you come to Delhi the next time? What should be used? I am asking someone to visit me when they are in Delhi the next time Thank you .

"Pay us a visit" sounds normal, Abcd. I don't know why or when people began to use "pay" with "visit", but that combination is now customary.

lingobingo

To pay [someone] a visit is a standard phrase. To make someone a visit is not – it does not make sense. The way you’ve used visit (as a verb) in your explanation is fine: Why don’t you visit us?

Pay us a visit was an example in Cambridge dictionary. It was Why don't you pay us a visit next time when you are in town?

I'm not sure I agree with that. I made a visit to Tuscany last year. I think when you use paid it has to be referring to a person or a group of people. "Made" seems suitable for a reference to a geographic area.

Travel Without a Visa

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

  • Consult with business associates
  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • Settle an estate
  • Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

  • Vacation (holiday)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted On Visitor Visas

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

Visitor visas will also not be issued for birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for their child).

How to Apply

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary by U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please consult the instructions on the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate website .

Complete the Online Visa Application

  • Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160 . You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must be in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Review the interview wait time for the location where you will apply:

Appointment Wait Time

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Prepare for your interview.

  • Fees - Pay the non-refundable visa application fee , if you are required to pay it before your interview. If your visa is approved, you may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, if applicable to your nationality. Fee information is provided below:

Select your nationality to see Issuance Fee

  • Review the instructions available on the website of the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  where you will apply to learn more about fee payment.

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

  • Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip,
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note:  Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.   Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further  administrative processing .  The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.  Review the  visa processing times  to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Learn more about admissions and entry requirements, restrictions about bringing food, agricultural products, and other restricted/prohibited goods, and more by reviewing the CBP website .

Extending Your Stay

See  Extend Your Stay  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being  out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in you being ineligible for visas in the future. Review  Visa Denials  and  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws  to learn more.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the USCIS website to learn more.

While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa.  However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

  • An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
  • There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
  • A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States.

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

  • Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
  • Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
  • Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visitor Visas for Personal or Domestic Employees (B-1)

You may apply for a B-1 visitor visa to work in the United States as a personal or domestic employee for your employer in limited situations. You may work in the United States on a visitor visa if your employer is:

  • A U.S. citizen who has a permanent home or is stationed in a foreign country, but is visiting or is assigned to the United States temporarily; or
  • A foreign citizen who is in the United States on one of the following nonimmigrant visa categories:  B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, or Q.

Learn more about your rights in the United States and protection available to you by reading the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet.

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if the IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the  Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC),  you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the  embassy or consulate  where you will apply.

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

Complete information about the TWIC program is available on TSA’s website at  https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic .

Misrepresentation or Fraud

Attempting to obtain a visa by the willful misrepresentation of a material fact, or fraud, may result in the permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry into the United States.

Citizens of China

In accordance with the agreement signed between the United States and China to extend visa validity, beginning on November 29, 2016, Chinese citizens with 10-year B1, B2 or B1/B2 visas in Peoples’ Republic of China passports will be required to update their biographical and other information from their visa application via a website every two years, or upon getting a new passport or B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa, whichever occurs first.  This mechanism is called EVUS - Electronic Visa Update System.

The EVUS website is now open to the public for enrollments at www.EVUS.gov .  CBP will not collect a fee for EVUS enrollment at this time. CBP anticipates the eventual implementation of an EVUS enrollment fee, but does not have a time frame. Until the implementation of a fee, travelers can enroll in EVUS without charge.  The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will keep visa holders informed of new information throughout the year. For further information, please visit  www.cbp.gov/EVUS .‎

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.

If someone you care about paid a scammer, here’s how to help

Facebook

Sharing a scam experience with someone you know takes courage. If someone trusts you enough to share their scam story, especially if the scammer is still in touch with them, here’s some advice to help guide you.

  • Lead with empathy.  Respond with kindness and concern instead of criticizing or expressing disappointment. Scams can happen to anyone. Keep lines of communication open with a kind, concerned response.
  • Let them tell their story. Talking about a scam experience helps you both understand what happened. And talking about the scam also helps both of you spot it in the future.
  • Validate their story. The only person at fault here is the scammer — not your friend or family member. It’s a scammer’s job to steal money or information, and they’ll target anyone. Ask them not to blame themselves and, instead, blame the scammer.
  • Ask what we can do next together. See if their personal information was involved, too, so identity theft might be a concern. And see if they might want to report the scam. Their story can help protect friends, family, their community, and themselves, as well as helping law enforcement agencies like the FTC fight that scam.

Want more help for your friend or family member? Here are some resources:

  • To report a scam, go to  ReportFraud.ftc.gov .
  • Find out more about other  next steps to take after paying a scammer.
  • And, if identity theft is a concern, help them start their recovery at  IdentityTheft.gov .

If scammers find the right buttons to push at the wrong time — like when we’re distracted or stressed — any of us might just pay them or share information. Thank you for helping someone through a difficult time.

Great Advice!!

thank you for sending me this information.

In reply to thank you for sending me… by Jeanette Banister

I used to report for you,I didn't see your good integrity with the victim me to catch the scammer and to stop my loss, the reason of reporting for you ,it didn't make me sense based on my experience. I hate scammer when relax like cool, they look like corrupted with the power... Sad experience.. Told the truth is not aggressive, it is authenticity😎.

My mom was scammed by a scammer in Nigeria and I reported it to Western Union as they said I could recoup some of the money because they had a class action suit. I spent 2-3 day gathering all the information and sent it to them, never heard a word back from them. She had sent about $60 - $70,000. File all the information they asked for. After all that work gathering all the information it makes me wonder was I the one getting scammed by W.U. This happened back in 2020-2021. Never heard a word back from them.

I was scammed years ago through Western Union, it was hard but I was able to provide eastern Union with all the transaction information, now several years to later, then just sent me a message that they needed the in information again, well I already gave it to them and they have it or how and why would they even contact if they didn't have it, miss, you are absolutely correct when you suggested that western Union was involved, it's not right, it's not fair business practices, I also believe the entire deal is connected to Western Union and I want my money back too, but with the deceite if western union employees we might never get my money back blessings!!!!!!?

What is absolutely unforgivable is all these government agencies do nothing to help out the victim. Yes fact finding and data collecting is important for policy making but the person who got scammed really gets no direct help whatsoever .

Thank you I did contact FTC I was scammed out of 22,500.00 to Homematters USA CASE IS PENDING BUT YOU NEVER TELL US HOW TO RETRIEVE OUR MONEY BACK; in other words FTC DO INVESTIGATE, but often we the victims never are compensated

If the FTC files an enforcement matter related to something you reported, and gets money back for people, we will try to contact the people who filed reports, and other people who lost money. Read the Frequently Asked Questions to learn about what happens after you report something to the FTC at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/faq .

We also explain the steps involved in getting refunds to people. Go to this page to read those steps: https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/recent-ftc-cases-resulting-refunds/how-… .

The FTC has a public list of active refund programs at www.ftc.gov/enforcement/refunds . The list tells you who to contact if you have a question about a refund in something on the list.

I was scammed last year, but I had friends who were able to help me undo the damages!

I didn't get back the stolen money, but I was lucky enough to have it replaced in my investment portfolio, while my monthly allowances replenished my checking and savings accounts!

I was cornered by my family and accused of lying and deceit. It was a horrible shaming experience and continues to bring me to tears. They will never know my full story because they didn't want to "listen" to me. I've been in some type of pain ever since. Thank you for sharing this vital, kind approach to helping others who might feel trapped in their scammer's web.

In reply to I was cornered by my family… by Taci

I have to agree that it’s emotionally and mentally the worst pain to go through and some people have taken their life because of all these scammers and everything they have done to cause so much pain and even death and I don’t want anyone to go through it was like I didn’t have any control over myself and I couldn’t believe the things I normaly would never said, did or done or whatever it was as I was brainwashed and had no control but I help others to know and bring awareness about this now

We've been scammed, and it is a nightmare to get it resolved. These crooks are getting wiser by the minute, we all need to be aware of their tactics. Thank you for putting this info out here ... keep it up!

why isn't the federal government doing more to stop these international scammers from preying on Americans? Can't these phone calls from around the world be stopped? Our tax money is going into this website telling people to be kind--but nothing is being done to end this horror!

I am educated more on identity theft, and various scammers!

My husband was scammed a few years ago out of 1000$ off an Apple card the scammer sent a text & when my hubby called a # given to him the man on the phone told him to enter 99999 as a code, well next thing you know the 1000 was gone! We were devastated because we are not rich & had recently recieved that money & needed it badly for bills. We tried all kind if things, then I came across this website. My hubby sent FTC a message explaining what happened & the on line bank that was holding the $ told us they couldn't return it to us because....I dont remember, but we did get the $ back on the Apple card then moved it to our checking account! We couldn't believe it, it had been 1 year!!! So, don't give up!! Someone @the FTC is listening & I am so thankful. Whoever you are God Bless You!!!

I was actually a victim and I was scammed for around 2k. Trying to get extra money for my daughter and bills. To anyone reading this do not try anything that sounds to good. I tried the bitcoin flip and all they do is tell you you have to pay more and more for the transaction fees.

This is very important info for people to know. I will share with others. Thank you.

Thank you for this information, I am evidently a victim of both scamming, jamming and identity theft, it turns out, it is more difficult and costly to reclaim my identity, than anything else I have undertaken. It's frightening, however I was not previously aware that the FTC is a law enforcement agency, that is a good thing.

The only way to stop them would be a world alliance with big exemples. Unfortunately, some governments encourage them.

6 Best Ways To Pay Someone Other Than Writing a Check or Cash

I f you’re looking to pay someone for a job they completed or to settle up any amount that you may owe someone , there are various ways to pay them that don’t involve writing a check or handing over cash. Here’s a look at the numerous options for paying someone to help you decide on the best way to hand over the funds.

Payment Apps

“Apps like Venmo and Cash App popularized the idea of digital peer-to-peer payments — friends and family in particular,” said Zach Robbins, finance expert and founder at Loanfolk . “The trend only accelerated after that initial use case to include more types of payments, and they’re now ubiquitous. Many of the same apps… are now also great for paying small businesses to enterprises. Chase and big banks even followed suit by launching Zelle.”

Multiple payment apps have made sending money, splitting a bill or paying an invoice easier than ever. You can transfer the funds with a few taps on your phone, as long as you have the person’s contact information. You’ll just need to ensure that a bank account with adequate funds is connected to the app.

Next: I’m a Bank Teller: Here Are 10 Mistakes You Are Making With Your Banking

Online Payment Processors

“Services like PayPal, Stripe and Square are widely used for their convenience and security,” said financial advisor Steven Crews . “They allow you to send money using just an email address or phone number. These services also offer buyer and seller protection for transactions.”

These online payment processors have simplified the way that you can send payments. Once you connect a bank account, you can send money worldwide. You can even send the money as a gift to ensure that the person doesn’t have to pay any fees.

Prepaid Cards

“Prepaid cards can be loaded with a specific amount of money and given to the recipient, who can then use the card as they would a debit or credit card,” Crews noted.

You can preload a card, and then the person can treat it like cash when going shopping. This can be an ideal option if the other party isn’t willing to share contact information or if they don’t want the funds transferred to their bank account for some reason.

“For a more personal touch, consider giving a gift card for a retailer or service that you know the recipient will appreciate,” Crews suggested.

If you’re splitting a bill and your friend doesn’t want the cash, you can load up a gift card with a set amount as your payment. For example, if you know that they’re a coffee lover, you can put the amount of a Starbucks gift card.

Bank Transfer

“Bank transfers are a secure and straightforward way to send money directly from one bank account to another,” said Crews.

This method is particularly useful for large amounts, since you’ll want to ensure that everything’s completed securely. You can visit your bank or log in to your banking app to make a transfer from one account to another.

Cryptocurrencies

“While not as widely accepted, cryptocurrencies like bitcoin offer a unique way to send money,” said Crews. “They offer the advantage of being decentralized, but their value can be volatile.”

Using cryptocurrency to exchange payments is slowly becoming more common, but you have to ensure that this person is familiar with the technology. The good news is that you can transfer bitcoin or ethereum — among many other cryptocurrencies — directly instead of liquidating your asset to cash, if the person you’re paying agrees.

Payment Considerations

“Apps like Venmo, Zelle and Cash App are popular for their ease of use,” said Crews. “However, they may not offer the same level of protection as online payment processors.”

You’ll want to be careful how you send the money, because you don’t want any safety concerns to arise. You also want to think twice before sending over a large sum of money to ensure you have the correct contact information.

“App-style payments are easy, fast and secure, and because they’re digital, they are a great way to maintain proof of payment, but it’s two-sided,” warned Robbins. “While these payment apps are super easy to use and have excellent security because of their scale, they also tend to be big targets for scammers. Double checking information as you send or entertain a request is critical and will ensure the money gets where it should go.”

When deciding how to pay someone, you should use the method you’re most comfortable with. You should also communicate with the person so that they understand how they’ll be paid. You want to be positive that they’ll understand how they’ll be collecting the money, so there isn’t any confusion.

Ohio is so backwards. Curiosity has flown out the window.

Why is ohio so backwards.

How did we get here ? How did Ohio become such a backward thinking state?

Watching committee hearings on "The Ohio Channel" I was able to hear and see a committee member actually ask fo r scientific proof of climate change.

My concern is with Ohio as a state with any number of universities and Ohio State University just blocks away, we voted in people too lazy or backward to get firsthand information.

Now I hope and pray. Donald Trump has destroyed the Ohio I knew.

The same can be said for the carbon capture and trans student laws.

Are none of these people curious enough about life to ask an expert or visit a research lab?

The country is full of labs who are not pawns of industry.

If you are not educated, go ask. Anyone can ask questions. But don't just believe the one who makes you feel good.

Jim Clark, Worthington

Why should I pay for your education?

President Joe Biden's recommendation to eliminate student debt sounds like a great idea, especially if you are a college student with debt.

It is funny how all these years no one thought, "hey, why should we have to pay for our college education?" Not until Biden ran for office and felt this might be a good way to win an election.

College is not free.

What to know: Biden's latest student-loan forgiveness plan brings questions for borrowers.

The professors need to get paid; the costs of maintaining the programs and buildings do not come cheap.

If we eliminate student debt how will we be able to keep our colleges going with no income?

Oh, that's right, the federal government will subsidize everything. Wrong!

The only way the government subsidizes is by taxing.

Now why would I want to pay for someone else's education when I have already paid for mine and my children?

Think about it.

What do you think? How to submit a letter to the editor for The Columbus Dispatch

No longer proud to be a Buckeye

After Columbia, Yale and, recently, Harvard’s stand against pro-Palestinian protesters camping on campus grounds and University of Southern California's racist stand to rescind the well-earned valedictorian address by Asna Tabassum, comes Ohio State University president’s threat and warning to the would-be protesters in his backyard.

Like the administrators of USC and Ivy League colleges, he, too, is using the dog whistle of ‘campus safety and security’ concern.

OSU "Will not compromise.' Ohio State president on safety as campuses face Gaza war protests

Do these protesters usually come armed, intent on vandalizing the school property, hurting and harming university personnel or campus police?

They only wish to highlight the plight of people in Gaza. Thanks to the total complicity of the Biden administration in Israel’s war with Hamas, so far more than 34,000 people have been killed, two-thirds of whom are children and women.

Through its president’s letter, Ohio State has chosen to join other schools trying to muzzle the voices on the campus against the genocide in Gaza. It mirrors the attitude of mainstream American media, which have chosen to shun pro-Palestinian guests but have no qualms in welcoming pro-Israelis who shamelessly drum the justification of carnage in Gaza.

I was proud to be part of OSU (1991-1994) and that two of my three children are Ohio State alums.

Not anymore.

Shame on OSU and its president for taking anti-student and anti-free speech stand behind pathetic and flimsy garb of safety and security. This is the antithesis of an educational entity in a free world.

Patriotism, loyalty to America key

Our politicians say our immigration problem requires comprehensive legislation.

History proves that we had an immigration process that would significantly reduce current border invasion and the anti-American sentiment that is so prevalent.

More: My generation is being raised to hate America — it’s time to stand up for our history

The requirements for entry, immigration, and naturalization in effect from 1795-1956 required a “ declarant” to pledge under oath to renounce all allegiance to any foreign governments and become a loyal U.S. citizen.

This was known as a declaration of intention. The declaration of intention was eliminated in 1956.

In addition, residence required for citizenship went from two years to five years and required ". . . three years before admission as citizens, to uphold, support and defend the Constitution, to bear arms as required by law against all enemies, foreign and domestic." This was known as the Oath of Allegiance.

There are more than 1 0 million people living illegally in our country who have never executed a Declaration of Intention or pledged an Oath of Allegiance.

Patriotism and loyalty to America and its founding ideals has been waning as the number of people seeking to enter the United States illegally continues to rise.

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

'To protect Donald Trump': Hush money trial witness details deals with Playboy model and porn actress

A key witness in Donald Trump 's criminal trial testified Thursday about his role in hush money payments to a porn actress and a Playboy model the former president allegedly had affairs with — and Trump's plan to make sure other negative stories about him never saw the light of day.

David Pecker , the former publisher of the National Enquirer, said Trump at one point sought to buy the rights to Karen McDougal 's allegations of a months-long affair with him as well as other information the Enquirer had on him in its archives. Trump has denied McDougal's claims.

Pecker said he eventually backed out of the deal for fear he could get into legal trouble — and that when he heard about adult film star Stormy Daniels' claim of a 2006 sexual encounter with Trump, he decided he couldn't front any more cash to keep his longtime friend out of trouble.

Daniels, he said, came forward as Trump's campaign was reeling from the emergence of the so-called “ Access Hollywood “ tape in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. The tape included a hot mic moment from 2005 that caught Trump, then the star of “The Apprentice,” saying he could kiss and grope women without their consent because “when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”

Former President Donald Trump holds news clippings as he leaves court for the day on April 18, 2024.

He said he was told by Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard that Daniels was looking for $125,000 for her story, which he did not want to pay since he'd already shelled out $180,000 to quash two other stories that could have damaged Trump's campaign. "I am not a bank," he told Howard in a text message.

He said he reached out to Trump attorney Michael Cohen and told him about Daniels' claim, and advised him that he should pay her. He said Cohen responded that the Enquirer should pay her. "I said I am not purchasing this story. I am not going to be involved with a porn star,” Pecker recounted, adding that retailer Wal-Mart was his biggest seller of magazines, a store with conservative roots.

Cohen agreed to pay Daniels' lawyer $120,000, but initially didn't pay. Pecker said he advised Cohen to cough up the cash "because if you don’t and it gets out, I believe the boss" — the term Cohen used to refer to Trump — "is going to be very angry with you.”

'I'll take care of it'

Pecker said he found out that Cohen was the one who paid Daniels in December 2016, when he met with Cohen at Trump Tower following the election. He said Cohen asked him if he could "talk to the boss on his behalf" about getting reimbursed. Cohen also asked him if he could review the Enquirer's files on Trump, a request Pecker said he refused.

Trump eventually joined the meeting, and Pecker said Cohen told the president-elect “I went through the files. We have nothing to be concerned about.”

Pecker said he then walked alone with Trump to his office, and pleaded Cohen's case. He said Trump told him, "Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it."

He was called back to meet with Trump at his Manhattan office in January, and walked in to see him surrounded by the likes of FBI Director James Comey, his soon-to-be chief of staff Reince Priebus and his pick for CIA director, Mike Pompeo, who'd been briefing him on a shooting at a Florida airport.

During their subsequent meeting, Trump asked "how Karen’s doing.” Pecker told him "things are going fine."

He said Trump thanked him for "handling" her "situation," and another involving a doorman who'd falsely claimed Trump had an illegitimate child. “The stories would have been very embarrassing,” he quoted Trump as saying.

McDougal was apparently still on Trump's mind even after he was sworn in as president. Pecker said Trump invited him, Howard and another of their business associates to the White House for a "thank you" dinner in July of 2017, where they toured the Oval Office. As they walked to dinner, Pecker said the president asked him how McDougal was doing. Pecker told him things were "going good."

The McDougal payment came about after Howard interviewed the model when she expressed an interest in coming forward in 2016. Howard told Pecker he believed her story about a 2006 affair with Trump, but said she had no corroborating evidence. Pecker said he believed her story too, after he spoke to Trump about her on the phone. "He said she is a nice girl," Pecker recounted.

He said Cohen called him the next day and told him he should “go ahead and buy the story” from her. Pecker said he'd have Howard negotiate the terms but asked who would pay for it. He said Cohen responded that "the boss will take care of it.”

Pecker added that Cohen wouldn't have the authority to spend any money without Trump's approval.

Howard eventually reached a deal where they would pay McDougal $150,000 for her story and to "restart" her career with articles in fitness magazines that Pecker published. Pecker said he was unhappy about having to front the money, but Cohen assured him "the boss" would reimburse him.

The eventual agreement barred McDougal from sharing details about "any romantic, personal and/or physical relationship McDougal has ever had with any then-married man” outside of Howard's publishing company, which had zero intention of sharing them, Pecker said.

Asked by prosecutor Joshua Steinglass if his primary purpose in suppressing her story was to influence the 2016 election, Pecker said, "Yes, it was."

“Were you aware that expenditures by a corporation made for the purpose of influencing an election and at the request of a candidate were unlawful?” Steinglass continued. “Yes,” Pecker responded calmly.

'The boss is going to be very angry'

After they made the deal, Pecker repeatedly asked Cohen to be reimbursed. Cohen assured him he'd be paid, but said Trump also wanted something else from him — the rights to McDougal's story and all the files the Enquirer had on him from over the years.

“The boss said if [Pecker] got hit by a bus or the company was sold he did not want someone else to potentially publish those stories,” Pecker quoted Cohen as telling him.

Pecker said there was nothing of note in the boxes they had on Trump, describing it as old files and articles that had already been published.

Pecker said he eventually agreed to a $125,000 deal, which Cohen would pay through a company he created called Resolution Consultants because Pecker was concerned he'd get into legal trouble if the publisher got a payment directly from Cohen or the Trump Organization. Those concerns eventually led him to drop his demand for reimbursement, telling Cohen it was "a bad idea."

Cohen, he said, did not take the news well. "He was very, very angry, very upset, screaming basically with me," Pecker said. Cohen also warned that "the boss is going to be very angry with you."

On Nov. 4, 2016 — just days before Election Day — the Wall Street Journal ran a story involving McDougal headlined, “National Enquirer shielded Donald Trump from Playboy Model’s Affair Allegation.”

Pecker said he got a call from Trump at home. He "was very upset, saying, 'How could this happen? I thought you had this under control. Either you or one of your people have leaked this story.'”

Pecker insisted he hadn't, and had his company, AMI, issue a statement denying the accurate story.

Steinglass asked him why he'd authorized the statement. "I wanted to protect my company, I wanted to protect myself and I also wanted to protect Donald Trump,” Pecker responded.

McDougal went public with her claim in a March 2018 CNN interview , and sued Pecker's company for allegedly misleading her into signing the agreement. Pecker said Trump called him after the interview and was "very aggravated."

He called Pecker again a few days later after Daniels went public with her claim, and told him she'd pay for doing so.

“He said that we have an agreement with Stormy Daniels that she cannot mention my name or anything like this and that each time she breaches the agreement it is a $1 million penalty, and based on the interview with Anderson Cooper she owes me $24 million dollars,” Pecker said.

It was after that that Pecker said he got a letter from the Federal Election Commission. He said Cohen told him not to worry about because Trump's attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions, and "Trump has him in his pocket."

The company later struck a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors who were investigating Cohen. Cohen pleaded guilty to related charges.

Pecker revealed for the first time that he also signed a cooperation agreement with the Manhattan district attorney's office back in 2019. The deal granted him immunity in the case, but warned he could be prosecuted for perjury if his testimony was not truthful.

Pecker said he last spoke to Trump in early 2019, but "I still consider him a friend.” Trump, he said, "was my mentor. He helped me throughout my career.”

On cross-examination, Pecker acknowledged it wasn't unusual for him to kill a story. He said about half the stories the paper purchased from sources never made it into print, although some were used as leverage with celebrities to land other stories.

Trump attorney Emil Bove asked him if he'd also helped kill a negative story about Trump's then-wife Marla Maples in 1998. Pecker said he had. The publisher said stories about Trump had historically been good for the paper's sales, but negative stories about him were not.

Earlier in the day before Pecker resumed his testimony, prosecutors filed their third motion to have Trump held in contempt for violating the judge's order banning him from making public statements about witnesses' "potential participation" in the case. Prosecutor Chris Conroy said Trump had violated that order again with comments calling his former lawyer Michael Cohen a liar and saying Pecker "has been a very nice guy." "This is a message to Pecker: be nice," Conroy said.

The judge scheduled a hearing on the request for Wednesday afternoon, which is typically an off-day in the trial. He has yet ruled on the previous requests, which were the subject of a hearing on Tuesday morning.

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records relating to money prosecutors say he used to repay Cohen for the hush money payment. He has pleaded not guilty .
