After 1,629,231 miles the speedometer on my Pete has died.  ☹️ The speedometer itself still works, the odometer and the trip meter no longer work.  I have sent it in to the folks who built the original and asked to have it evaluated for repair, sadly they no longer make the parts to fix it.  They do sell its replacement and the price isn't bad, $183.35 plus shipping however the new unit doesn't quite look like the old one.  One of the things I love about my truck is the full complement of gauges, gauges that look like gauges, this new gauge is the same size, will fit into the same location, plug into the same wiring harness but it only goes to 80mph has a different looking face and has digital odometer and trip meters.  So if anyone can offer any advise on how to procure a stock speedo for my truck I sure would appreciate it, I don't care what the mileage shown says I know the actual mileage on my truck and will keep the original speedo to keep track of total miles in addition to what I put on any new or replacement speedo.  I am going to try and find out what years used this particular speedo but I am including a photo of the gauges now in the truck in case anyone should run across what I am looking for.  Thanks for any help you can give.

Let me get a picture of the speedo in my 377 cab and see if it is the same. It is a 1995 377. It would increase the value of your 379 by a couple hunnerd thousan miles, but I'll give it to you if it is the right style. It all worked last time I drove it. I think it shows right close to 1.5 mill.

I'm a work'n on it.

The peer pressure from @rickeieio was too great so here are a few pics of my new ride.  It's a 2004 Pete 379 with an ISX and an Eaton 18.  There are 400K miles on the rebuild and 1.25M on the chassis.  My very first two mods were to change out a rather grimy steering wheel and to ditch that Outlaw shifter.  It hurt this old man's shoulder too much to reach that high!  In addition, those tall shifters put waaaay too much strain on the shift tower...not to mention the fact that it just looks plain idiotic, imho.

Howdy Sehc,

I have dealt with Summit in the past good place to get parts for sure.  "MY" problem is I want to retain the "look" of the original dash, all those replacement speedos would work but in my mind they would really clash with the other gauges and look very out of place in the truck.

The long nose Pete, the older long nose KW, just have a "LOOK" that is to some of us truly classic and its a mortal SIN to do anything that detracts from that look.  Yes I know, kinda dumb but it is what it is and I fall into that batch of eccentric relics that were just built that way.

My apologies, Dave.  I didn't want to muck up your thread.  My intent was to start a new thread...I actually thought I had, but everything ended up here.  SORRY!

Howdy Deezl Smoke,

Sir, if you have a functional speedo that looks like mine I would honored to BUY it from you, I sincerely appreciate your offer to donate it but such things are getting very hard to come by and do have value to those of us who wish to retain the "look" of our classic trucks.

Not a problem, I really have dash envy now that you have posted photos of your beautiful truck, that BIG pyro gauge just does things to me.  Truly a very nice rig that has some very expensive after market pieces in the interior I can't believe what those rosewood arm rests cost as well as the upper door panels and all the chrome.  I concur that the extended shift has to go but man I am lovin my new lowered seats so much more comfortable.

EDIT, I just noticed you have the large I am guessing 150 gallon fuel tanks, wish mine were that size my truck has the smaller 125 gallon tanks I sure miss having the larger tanks like my Freightliner had.

Thanks, Dave.  I purchased the truck last October and have spent hours getting it ready for the road.  Indeed, those are twin 150s...very nice.  She was a Team truck in an earlier life.

I dont imagine you are the only person needing guages.  Like LDTs, have you looked to see if your can be rebuilt?  I cant imagine that there arent companies that rebuild those.  Might take a bit of looking.  I rebuilt a cluster complete in my Chev work truck, which IF I had gone to the dealer, they would have sent it to a place like the one I used, and charged me a hefty markup for their services.  I found a guy that was mobile and had it all completely done at my yard for a very reasonable price.

Perhaps something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/99-04-Peterbilt-379-Speedometer-Repair-Service-/253576388369

Howdy rpsinc,

I also posted my plight on Donna's facebook account, I post on the HDT list over there under her name. One of the replies I got over there mentioned the shop in your link, I am now in email contact with this shop and with luck I'll be able to get my old speedo repaired.  Thanks for your help and the link as others may find it useful as I have.

There just is something comforting about repairing something that still has life rather than replacing it and throwing the old one away.

Kinda like rebuilding my roto hammers instead of replacing.  I have some that have me well for more than 20 years.  Cant get rebuild parts anymore.  I never thought I would work those tools that long.

I agree, I remember as a kid my Dad fixing just about anything that broke and being able to make or buy the parts to do so, many people earned a good living by repairing things.  I am not comfortable in this throw away society, my love of all things old fashioned to include trucks is just a part of me.

Kind of like the idea of needing a tool, find one to buy.  I have lots of tools I have made for specific tasks or jobs and then others that I made with the intent to be multi functional.  Some I have had for many decades and still use.  In fact I still have the ratchet and socket set my Dad bought me in 1977, which started my mechanical career.  I carried it in a small 6 drawer top box along with other tools I added till it became too small.  I now have a 3000SF shop, a 16' enclosed trailer, a small welding trailer, a service truck stocked with tools- a Miller Trailblazer and torch set and my RV hauler with a Stalick bed.  All stocked ready to work as needed.

And even at this, I sometimes find I need to make or buy a different tool to get a job done.

Howdy Jcussen,

I really do appreciate your reply and offer to help, but any of the speedometers on that site would clash with the rest of my dash, keeping the "traditional" look is of great importance to me.

Dang Tom, that's a nice ride.  Now you need one of Henry's hitches.  And to retire, of course.

Thanks for the kind words.  She's a work in progress, but so far I'm extremely impressed.

;)

Um mr cob, like, why would your 379 need a > 80mph speedo meter?  😀

"Are we there yet?" asked no motorcycle rider, ever.

Howdy noteven,

I'll plead the 5th, I refuse to answer that question as it may tend to incriminate me.

That said for the record, the ECM de-fuels the engine at 94mph and I know that to be a fact, GPS verified.  Just cuzz it's old don't mean it's slow. 😉

Ya my little dually has a “road gear” like that but I think yer engine is going to get away from me soon as the road tilts up hill like

Well shoot. I thought I had chrome bezels, but they are black. I also have the tach in matched black from the same dash if you want it. Or if someone knows how to swap bezels....?

5 Steps To Fix Peterbilt 379 Speedometer Not Working

Peterbilt 379 Speedometer Not Working

The Peterbilt 379 is one of the most sought-after trucks manufactured by Peterbilt. It boasts many powerful features and is known for its durability. However, just like every piece of machinery, it also develops problems over time.

Many users have reported that the speedometer in the Peterbilt 379 truck stops working sometimes. Since this truck is designed mainly for highway use, the speedometer holds key importance as it allows you to keep an eye on the speed of the truck.

It shows you accurate traveling speed , allowing you to maintain a sensible pace . So, what causes the speedometer of the Peterbilt 379 truck to stop working? If you find yourself in a similar situation, this article is for you!

In this troubleshooting guide, we will take you through some of the common reasons for this problem, along with its common solutions to put a smile back on your face.

Peterbilt 379 Speedometer Not Working

Here are a few simple solutions to try if the speedometer of the Peterbilt 379 stops working.

1. Check Wirings

If the speedometer stops working, start by checking its wiring. A visual inspection is enough to detect the majority of the problems. First, make sure to turn off the Peterbilt 379 truck. Then, look for signs of damage on the wires.

If the wires are damaged, burnt, or have exposed ends, the speedometer won’t likely work properly. A large cluster can easily hide a damaged wire. If that’s the case, consider using your mobile flashlight.

However, a visual check may not be enough to spot a damaged wire in some cases. This is where a multimeter comes in handy. A multimeter is a device used to measure the electrical properties of an electric device or wire.

Nowadays, digital multimeters are also available on the market that measure the values more accurately while being compact.

Make sure to set your multimeter to 200 ohms before using it . Now, connect the wires to the multimeter. If it shows some reading, the circuit is complete. On the other hand, if you see an infinity sign on the display of the multimeter, it indicates that the circuit is open.

Simply replacing the wires will bring the speedometer of your Peterbilt 379 truck back to life. With little DIY skills, you can do it at home without needing any professional assistance.

However, if you do not have enough knowledge, refrain from handling the wires. Consider reaching out to a trained mechanic, and they will take care of everything.

In addition to that, be sure that the instrument cluster of your Peterbilt 379 truck is in good health. An instrument cluster is a board having a set of gauges, including the speedometer.

Sometimes, the problem is not with the speedometer but with the cluster. You can use a voltmeter to validate the integrity of the instrument cluster. If it has power, consider taking a closer look.

It is important to note that if the instrument cluster is defective, the other gauges on the board, such as the fuel gauge , will also stop working.

An instrument cluster has lines that carry the current from one point to another. If they have gone bad, they won’t be able to carry the current, and as a result, the speedometer of your Peterbilt 379 truck will stop working.

Carry out a visual check to see if the traces have burnt. If so, you will need a soldering iron and a few other tools to fix it. If you do not have these tools at home, it would be better to call in an expert.

2. Defective Speed Sensor

A malfunctioning speed sensor can also stop the speedometer of your Peterbilt 379 truck. A speed sensor produces signals that move the needle on the speedometer.

So, if there is something wrong with the speed sensor, the system won’t receive any data to measure the speed.

To check the speed sensor, you will have to locate it first. If you are unsure about its location, consider going through the user manual. The manual will help you locate it. Moreover, it will also have instructions regarding its replacement process.

Once you have located the speed sensor, check its condition. If it is broken, replacing it will be the only solution. The good news for you is that these sensors are readily available all over the world. Visit your nearby hardware store, and you will likely find one there.

3. Faulty Engine Control Unit

A failing engine control unit can also lead to this problem in the Peterbilt 379 truck. An engine control unit is often called the heart of the engine management system, and for a good reason.

It monitors various aspects of your vehicle, such as ignition timing, air/fuel mixture, and even speed. So, if this unit goes bad, your truck may not be able to recognize its traveling speed and will stay at zero most of the time.

If the engine does not start properly or dies soon after starting, the engine control unit may be the culprit. Furthermore, check to see if the unit is overheating . If it is, there is definitely something wrong with it.

Peterbilt 379 Control Unit

The engine control unit is an expensive and complicated component, so replacing it requires skills and experience. If you lack these skills, it would be better to limit yourself to visual inspection.

Contact a mechanic and let them diagnose the problem. Once you have got it replaced, start your vehicle and see whether it has fixed the problem or not.

4. Blown-Out Fuse

The speedometer of the Peterbilt 379 truck comes with a fuse that protects it in case of power surges . It blows up to break the circuit when too much current flows through it, causing this problem.

Therefore, take a look at the fuse, and if it has blown out, replace it to resolve this issue. A voltmeter can also be used to determine whether it is working fine or not.

5. Replace the Speedometer

If you have tried all the solutions and the problem still persists, there is a high likelihood that you are dealing with a faulty speedometer. Be mindful that it must be installed properly , or else you may face the same problem even after getting a replacement.

And yes, you can contact Peterbilt customer support if the warranty hasn’t expired. This way, you can get a replacement while paying the least out of your pocket.

The Bottom Line

There have been many complaints regarding the speedometer of the Peterbilt 379 truck. From a faulty speed sensor to damaged wires, there could be many reasons why the speedometer may stop working sometimes.

We have mentioned several tried and tested fixes in this article that you can try if you face this problem.

How much does a Peterbilt 379 cost?

As a fully customizable Class 8 tractor, 379 pricing varies based on configuration. On average, expect to pay:

  • New 379: $140,000-$180,000
  • Used 379: $40,000-$120,000

The exact cost depends on factors like age, mileage, engine, and options. Work with a trusted Peterbilt dealer to build the ideal 379 for your needs and budget.

Year  – Older 379s from the 1980s and 1990s are generally less expensive than newer models. Expect to pay more for trucks from the 2000s.

Mileage  – Lower mileage trucks command higher prices. Under 200,000 miles is ideal.

Engine  – The Cat, Cummins, Detroit, and PACCAR engine options have different MSRPs. Higher horsepower or newer engines cost more.

Axle/Suspension Config  – Tandem axle 379s are less expensive than tri-drive models. Air ride suspension costs more than spring suspension.

Transmission  – Automated manual transmissions are pricier than manual transmissions.

Sleeper  – Larger, more amenity-loaded sleepers add cost. A 70″ Unibilt sleeper costs less than an 86″ Stratosphere sleeper.

Condition  – Well-maintained 379s in good condition bring higher resale values. Minor repairs or damages reduce the price.

Its durability and customizability ensure it will remain on the road for decades to come.

Speedometer jumping all over the place

09 T370 with the cummins ISC (pacer px8) and an Eaton Fuller 10 speed. Been having this issue for a while now but it is getting worse. Speedometer will jump to 80 and stay there or just go all over the place. Happens when driving and parked. When driving the cruise control will continue to work even if the speedo suddenly goes whack. The truck will still accel or decel when needed and the odometer will still turn at the correct speed. Also the speedo will never read less than the speed of the truck. When parked, it will go everywhere and on occasions it will trip the ELD into driving even when not moving. I can't tell what cause it to trip to drive as the speedo can bounce for 0 - 80 - 40 - 30 - 0 - 80 - 10 and so on and it won't to rip it. Hell it can sit at 80 for a solid minute and not trip but then randomly it will and stay driving for several minutes before it thinks the truck stopped. I usually have to turn off the eld if I know I'm going to be stopped with the truck running. Id turn it back on and there be 4 - 6 in identified driving events that I'd have to reject to keep the logs clean. Also note that with the key on, the issue stops. So the engine has to be running for it to start I've tighten the yoke nut and bought a new speed sensor but it was the wrong one. I haven't gotten the right one yet but I sit here thinking that it can't be that because cruise control and the odometer will always work correctly, which tells me the ECM is seeing the right speed. But then the speedo and the eld is controlled by the ECM. So when the speedo acts up, why does it occasionally trip the drive time? I honestly have no idea. I'm still going to replace the speed sensor but I just don't think that will fix it Video in action 20220110_163352.mp4

How many speed sensors? Since the cruise control continues, apparently the ECM is seeing the speed constant, ruling out loose tailshaft or bearing issue. Either 2 different sensors, and likely so. Or, 1 sensor feeding ECM, and ECM supplies info to truck. If so, there's an issue with interference between truck and ECM. If 2 sensors, bad sensor,or wiring to truck. I'm leaning towards ECM send info to truck.

Mach said: ↑ As far as I know, there is only one seasor at the output shaft for the trans. It is a 4 pin plug for that sensor ( I got a 2 pin buy accident). If it's ECM, is that even fixable without replacing the entire computer? And of it's interference, Lord knows how to find what is doing it lol Click to expand...
Good points. I'll try to see what I can find for a diagram and also when I see my mechanic next, I'll have him hook the laptop up and see what it sees. Not looking forward to having to replace what ever wireing harness that maybe if that's the issue. But at 800k miles I wouldn't be surprised if something is worn down to the wires.
