The total space of the land is 17 acres, filled with hawthorn trees decorating the hillside.

The mansion was designed by the brothers with the help of an architectural firm, created in a Georgian revival style.

Orville Wright Hawthorn Hill utilized many gadgets and inventions made by Orville Wright.

This included a rod-and-chain system to control the furnace from upstairs and a toaster that could also slice bread.

There was also a water softener for shower use, a buzzer system, and a chair with an adjustable footstool and reading stand.

Many guests would come to visit the mansion over the years, including Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Carl Sandburg.

Even the likes of President Roosevelt and Greece’s King Constantine stopped by!

Situated close to the Great Miami River, the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park is a gem.

With 3 surrounding acres of ground, it showcases many archeological excavations that were found here over the course of two decades.

Exploration tours let you explore the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park in detail.

Possum Creek MetroPark is packed with stuff to do for people of all ages.

It’s a beautiful mix of history and nature.

Once, this whole area was farmland, and until it was tended to it had degraded significantly.

Now, it’s a beautiful home for birds and butterflies, with lots of activities.

Its education center has been offering public programs for the community throughout the year, focusing on the environment and produce.

Possum Creek MetroPark is probably most known for Argonne Forest, which once held an amusement park.

The purple trail loop lets you explore this forest thoroughly, learning about nature and local history as you go.

It’s also a great place for picnics.

You should then stop by Argonne Lake, which boasts fishing opportunities and reservable space for camping or shelters.

Possum Creek MetroPark also boasts one of the most stunning grass prairies in Ohio.

It is called the Jean V. Woodhull Prairie, named after a big contributor to Dayton’s MetroParks.

Here, you’ll find a native landscape filled with rare plants like sawtooth sunflower, coneflower, spiderwort, blazingstar, and prairie dock.

This is also a habitat for insects, birds, reptiles, and other small fauna.

After that, head to Possum Creek Farm to learn about small-scale local produce raising.

21. Wright Company Factory

The Wright Company Factory opened in 1910, founded by Orville and Wilbur Wright.

The brothers used the factory to manufacture and sell aircraft, but after six years, the building was sold.

A different aircraft company took over for a while before eventually also selling in 1919.

This is how the Wright Company Factory ended up as a car factory.

The car company developed more and more infrastructure, and the original technology by the brothers slowly faded into the background.

The new buildings began to obscure the historic structures, causing them to be forgotten.

In 2008, the plant was closed down.

In 2013, the big modern buildings were demolished.

The removal of these large structures reveals the old Wright Company Factory building, still in surprisingly good condition!

Today, the National Aviation Heritage Alliance has restored the buildings.

Free tours are available now and then, and the historic factory is fun to explore and learn about.

After 80 years, the buildings still retain their old charm and have become among Dayton attractions.

The park was set up in 1978 surrounding the big Caesar Creek Lake.

Englewood Metropark is one such location.

Packed with nature and among the biggest parks in the area, it’s been a local fixture for over five decades.

Activities here include 24/7 fishing, disc golfing at Blue Heron Disc Golf Course, and bird-watching.

In fact, Englewood Metropark is so good for bird-watching that it has the Benedict Blincoe Wildlife Observation Area.

90% of all species of birds in Dayton have been seen here.

The observation area supplies crayfish, worms, and other common bird foods to encourage them to stop by.

You’ll get to spot migrating and local birds alike.

Some examples are eagles, great blue herons, sandhill cranes, belted kingfishers, owls, Baltimore orioles, ducks, warblers, and cedar waxwings.

Interestingly, the ecology of this part of the park is a wetland, formed from Stillwater River’s silt runoff.

Other animals, like beavers, raccoons, and muskrats, also visit.

Englewood Metropark boasts an impressive three waterfalls which you can see in one trip through the green trail.

The first you’ll see is Martindale Falls, which boasts a shale-and-limestone ridge that cascades into a rocky ravine.

The next is Patty Falls, which boasts wet weather falls accompanied by a smaller side fall.

Finally, there’s the small Oaks Falls to relax at!

Also, while you’re at it, take a walk to see one of the oldest trees in the area, a blue ash tree dubbed Big Blue.

Dayton is in western Ohio and is probably best known for its air and space history.

In Dayton, you’ll find an Air Force Base, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, and all kinds of connections to the Wright Brothers.

Although North Carolina is where the first flight took place, the Wright Brothers were actually from Dayton and built the first plane in Dayton.

So, Dayton is considered the ‘Birthplace of Flight’.

Today, you’ll see that legacy throughout the city and the various attractions in Dayton OH.

However, there is more to the city than just its aviation history.

Dayton is also full of amazing restaurants, some of the best breweries in Ohio, unique museums and parks, and even a Native American Village and archeological park.

The National Museum Of The United States Air Force Is A Must See Attraction In Dayton

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is easily one of the most unique museums in Ohio .

You won’t find a copy of this museum anywhere else in the country, and it’s in the birthplace of aviation!

The museum itself is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, but civilians can access the museum.

It is completely free to visit the museum and you can plan to spend an entire day there if you really wanted to.

Inside the 19-acre museum complex, you’ll find more than 350 aerospace vehicles and thousands of artifacts.

The Carillon Historical Park and Museum is a great way to learn about the varied history of Dayton.

The park itself is over 65 acres and there is an open-air museum on the grounds.

It’s a beautiful park in Dayton to walk around, plus it’s a learning experience.

The park is open daily and there is an entrance fee. For adults, it is $12 and for children, it is $8.

However, the admission price is completely worth it when you realize all of the things you get to see at this park and the open-air museum.

It’s reminiscent of European markets and is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the year.

In fact, even the fixtures within the museum are original to the dealership when it was open.

Inside, you’ll find 50 different cars that are the best examples of Packard’s throughout history.

The cars date from 1903 to the 1950s.

You can tour the museum from Wednesday through Sunday and there is a $10 admission fee.

Learn About The Wright Brothers At The Wright Cycle Company Complex Museum

Before they were the inventors of aviation, the Wright brother’s owned a bicycle business.

One of the coolest things to do in Dayton, OH, is to see the original Wright Cycle Company Complex.

The brothers started their bicycle business in 1892, and at one point, there were 6 different locations in Dayton.

Before that, they ran a newspaper print shop, which they closed in 1890.

In 1896, the brothers began designing and selling their own bicycles which eventually led to them designing their first flyer.

Today, one of the best things to do in Dayton is to tour the building the brothers ran their shop out of from 1895 to 1897.

It’s the only original building still standing that once housed a Wright brother’s shop.

Now, it’s part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park and the National Aviation Heritage Area.

The museum is free to tour and inside you’ll find a few different exhibits.

It’s also been designed to look like it would have when the Wright brothers originally occupied the building.

Walk The Trails At The RiverScape Metro Park In Dayton OH

The RiverScape Metro Park is one of the largest public parks in Dayton Ohio.

Throughout the year, it hosts various events in Dayton and is known for its beautiful landscape.

There are beautiful gardens, the shores of Miami River, reflecting pools, and more in the large park.

You can walk over 330 miles of paved trails or even go kayaking in the river.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is a cool fountain of lights that puts on a show every night, at 10-minute intervals.

In the winter, the park has an ice skating rink that the entire family can enjoy.

If you want to spend some time outside, no matter what time of year you visit, the RiverScape Metro Park is one of the best things to do in Dayton Ohio.

Charleston Falls Preserve Is A Great Place To Explore Near Dayton

Charleston Falls Preserve is not actually in Dayton, but it is very close.

It’s actually in a small town called Tipp City, and it’s just a short 20-minute drive away from the heart of Dayton.

I’ve included it on this list because it has some truly beautiful scenery and is the most visited nature park in Miami County, OH.

It’s not very far away, and totally worth the short drive.

The park has over 216 acres of beautiful woods, waterfalls, and even prairies.

There is a beautiful waterfall in Ohio that actually originates from an underground spring.

Charleston Preserve is a great place in Ohio to go hiking , see some uncommon plants, and just enjoy the great outdoors.

Those are just some of the many reasons why I think it’s one of the best things to do in Dayton.

Explore The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park is one of the coolest National Parks in Ohio .

The large aviation park consists of several different exhibits and individual museums.

It highlights the discoveries of the Wright brothers in their goal of achieving controllable flight.

The aviation heritage park also includes Paul Laurence Dunbar’s involvement with the Wright brother’s history.

For those who don’t know, Paul Laurence Dunbar was an American poet, novelist, and writer, who was born to enslaved parents before the Civil War.

He was born and raised in Dayton Ohio, and later became a writer for the Wright brother’s newspaper company.

In fact, Orville Wright was a classmate and close friend of Dunbar’s.

Throughout the years, their histories would become intertwined and leave a lasting mark on Dayton, and the world.

In the aviation heritage park, you’ll learn all about this connection, how the three supported and influenced each other, and how they came to leave their mark on history.

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is a children’s museum in Dayton Ohio.

The museum has an extensive collection of natural history artifacts on display.

The collection teaches children about the different natural history aspects of Ohio, and even Dayton in particular.

Inside the museum, you’ll also be able to see the Apollo Observatory.

The Apollo Observatory is an astronomical observatory that is operated by the Miami Valley Astronomical Society.

You can visit this Dayton attraction daily and there is a small admissions fee.

For children, the fee is $11.50 and for adults, it is $14.50.

Spend The Day At Eastwood Metro Park

Eastwood Metro Park is one of the many hubs of outdoor recreation in Dayton Ohio.

The park is over 440 acres and includes a large lake.

So you can enjoy a variety of water-based and land-based activities within the park.

There are hiking and biking trails, campsites, and picnic shelters.

You can also go kayaking or canoeing in the lake throughout the year.

On even-numbered dates, you can bring your powerboat to the lake.

If you want to bring your personal watercraft, sailboats, or fishing boats, you can do that on odd-numbered dates.

However, kayaks and canoes can be used on the lake daily!

Visit The Gravesites Of Notable Americans At The Dayton National Cemetery And The Woodland Cemetery

There are two major cemeteries in Dayton that are the final resting places for notable Americans.

The first is the Dayton National Cemetery, which is a cemetery for veterans.

It was established in 1867, and it is one of the only 8 National Cemeteries in the US that has the remains of veterans from every major conflict.

There are gravesites that date all the way back to the Revolutionary War, despite it not being formally established until 1867.

Notable internments include Medal of Honor recipients, Revolutionary War veterans, jazz musicians, authors, major league baseball players, Army generals, and Ohio Lieutenant Governors.

The other cemetery in Dayton that is the final resting place for notable Americans is the Woodland Cemetery.

The Woodland Cemetery is one of the Nation’s five oldest rural garden cemeteries.

The cemetery is also where the Wright brothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar are laid to rest.

Both cemeteries are beautiful and peaceful places to walk and pay your respects to some of Ohio’s most prominent historical figures.

The SunWatch Indian Village And Archeological Park Is One Of The Coolest Things To Do In Dayton Ohio

You’ll find the SunWatch Indian Village and Archeological Park right next to the Great Miami River, in Dayton.

The park houses a reconstructed Fort Ancient American Village.

Thanks to the work of the Dayton Society of Natural History, lengthy archeological excavations were performed.

The SunWatch village was reconstructed based on the findings of the excavations.

It is as closely identical to the original village as it can be based on the scientific findings of the archeological team.

Not only is it an extremely important archeological site, but it’s also the site of an open-air museum.

The village and open-air museum are open seasonally, from April to November.

There is an admission fee of $7 for adults and $6 for students. The fee helps support the continued work of the archeological team.

You’ll be able to walk through the reconstructed village at your own pace.

Then, you can tour the museum to learn more about the ancient civilization of people that would have called the area home.

Learn About Dayton’s Famous Author At The Paul Laurence Dunbar House

I mentioned previously that Paul Laurence Dunbar was a famous author, poet, and novelist that was born and raised in Dayton Ohio.

He was classmates and friends with Orville Wright and even wrote for the Wright brother’s newspaper at one time.

The Paul Laurence Dunbar House is also part of the Dayton Aviation National Heritage Park and is free to tour.

During his career, Dunbar produced an immense amount of work.

He wrote over 400 works, which include 4 novels, 12 books of poetry, lyrics to popular songs at the time, and even 4 books of short stories.

In 1904, Dunbar purchased the house for his mother.

He only lived there a short time because he tragically died of Tuberculosis in 1906.

However, the house is where Dunbar also finished his last works.

Today, you can tour the home and see it restored to how it most likely looked at the time of Dunbar’s death.

It’s a unique piece of Dayton history and one of the more interesting Dayton attractions to visit.

Explore The Cox Arboretum

Exploring the Cox Arboretum is one of the prettiest things to do in Dayton Ohio.

The arboretum can be found in Dayton and is considered to be one of the Metro Parks.

There are over 170 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, a butterfly house, and a boxwood maze.

Within the grounds, you’ll find specialty gardens like the Iris Garden, the Water Garden, the Rock Garden, and the Edible Landscape Garden.

You could easily spend a few hours exploring the grounds.

If you’re visiting Dayton with kids, there is also a boxwood shrub maze they can explore.

There is also a really cool spiral staircase structure you can climb to get a birds-eye view of the arboretum!

25 Best Things to Do in Dayton (Ohio)

Known as the birthplace of aviation, Dayton’s aviation culture is one of its largest draws. However, there are tons of other things to do in this Ohio city, that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

So, if you’re coming from another, larger Ohio destination to check out one of the aviation-related attractions, extend your stay and hang out a while. You may be surprised at all the great things you find!

Let’s explore the best things to do in Dayton :

1. The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center

Of course, you do have to at least get the main aviation attractions on your itinerary.

Start at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, a National Historic Landmark where the Wright Cycle Company on South Williams Street was located.

Did you know, by the way, that the Wright Brothers weren’t always airmen…they actually were in the printing business? This center shows you their early lives, and also the life of their friend, high school classmate and poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The free attraction is open Wednesday-Sunday, during normal business hours, and features film and exhibits.

2. Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center

Thought you had to go to Kittyhawk to see where the Wright brothers flew? Not quite! You can stop in at this huge (84 acres) field where the brothers actually started perfecting their flight skills, using the third iteration of their plane, the Wright Flyer III. This was actually the first practical airplane in the world.

This spot is owned by the U.S. Air Force and the National Park Services, so admission is totally free, and it’s also open during the same hours as the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center.

3. The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site

Okay, let’s take a step back from the aviation history (but only for a second, and not too large of a step) and revisit the Wright brothers’ friend mentioned above, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Dunbar was the first internationally acclaimed African-American poet, and he had a huge influence on many of the African American writers we know and love today, such as Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou.

Born to former slave parents in 1872, Dunbar catalogues the various challenges facing African Americans in a post-Civil-War world.

Dunbar didn’t live very long, dying at age 33, but during his very short life, he was able to publish more than 400 poems, six novels, some plays, short stories and even lyrics for musicals.

4. John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center

Now, if you actually want to see the 1905 Wright Flyer III (which, is the only plane to earn status as a National Historic Landmark), then you have to go to the John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center.

In addition to this gorgeous airplane, you’ll also see a replica of the Wright Brothers bicycle shop, one of their actual bicycles and then the various tools they used when they were designing their plane. Plus, you can see the camera that took the iconic photo of the first flight.

5. Hawthorn Hill

This historic home was that of Orville Wright and his family members.

They moved in, in 1914, into what was at the time an early suburb of Dayton.

The spacious Georgian revival mansion, though, unfortunately was never home to Wilbur Wright, who died from Typhoid Fever while it was still being built.

His brother, Orville, however, would live there until he died in 1948.

6. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

Fast-forward through time and check out the rest of aviation’s history, at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

This is the world’s largest and oldest military aviation museum and also the most-visited free tourist attraction in Ohio.

More than a million people visit each year! There are more than 360 aerospace vehicles, missiles and tons of artifacts.

It’s all set on 17 acres of indoor space.

Exhibits are situated chronologically, so that you can walk through history and see things develop and change over time.

There are lots of hands-on activities, such as sitting in a jet cockpit and walking through a NASA shuttle.

Plus, you can see the only display of a B-2 stealth bomber in the entire world.

There’s a simulator ride for the adventurous, a theatre for daily movies and a cafeteria serving up astronaut food.

7. Five Rivers MetroParks

The Dayton park system combines nearly 16,000 acres of outdoor space in 25 different facilities.

So many of these are also accessible via bike, so you can get back to nature from nearly everywhere.

Plus, Dayton has been awarded a bronze level in bicycle friendliness, which means that every person in the city lives less than 10 minutes away from a bike path! Check out the park system’s calendar during your stay, as there are many great, free activities, that don’t even require registration to attend.

8. Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm

This 200-acre site has not only all the farm and farm animals you could want, but also educational resources, walking trails, gardens and a sustainability program.

Plus, the farm is open during normal business hours and very affordable, with tickets being only $4 for adults, and $2 for children.

Check out their normal lineup of events, but also visit just to see the beautiful property.

The Bank Barn is especially noteworthy, built in the German heritage style of the 1800s.

You can even see fossils in the limestone blocks used to build the barn! The upper level of the barn houses hay and grains, while the lower level is home to the horses, goats, pigs, cows and other animals.

Dayton offers a ton of golf courses for you to check out, if you want to get in a game during your stay.

There are 11 different courses, but the two closest to you may be the Madden Golf Course and the Kittyhawk Golf Center.

But if you want to try your hand at some different types of golfing, they also have lots of disc golf for you to enjoy, at two free courses.

One is at the Englewood MetroPark, and the other is at the Indian Riffle Park.

Both are 18 holes.

10. Ice Skating

Much like golfing, if you visit in the winter and want to get active, Dayton has you covered.

You can go to the Five Rivers MetroParks RiverScape ice rink, located in downtown Dayton, right on the bank of the Great Miami River.

The huge rink is 70 feet by 150 feet, and is totally picturesque.

Rent your skates right there, and don’t forget to warm up by the fire pit afterward, with some hot chocolate.

But, even if the weather isn’t very wintery, you can still skate from August to April indoors, at the Kettering Recreation Center.

Plus, Kettering also hosts youth hockey, if that’s your thing.

11. The Dayton Ballet

Don’t think that just because you’re in the middle of Ohio, you can’t enjoy some beautiful ballet! The Dayton Ballet is currently in its 80th year, and it produces five programs within each season.

This year, they’re bringing two recognizable favorites to the stage — The Great Gatsby and Swan Lake.

If you’re a ballet fan, these are two shows you definitely won’t want to miss!

12. Dayton Contemporary Dance Company

Maybe you like dance, but you’re not a ballet fan? The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company may be more your style.

In their 49th season, the company is setting the stage this year with amazing shows, from a salute to jazz, to a retelling of a Christmas story, to outdoor concerts to a collaboration.

13. The Dayton Opera

Yes, Dayton even has an opera! This season features all Italian composers, but each is wildly different.

Catch work from Giuseppe Verdi, Menotti and Rossini.

The Dayton Opera has been around since 1960, when it started with a meager budget of $30,000. Now, it works with a budget of $2 million, and it shows! The amazing performances are not to be missed, if you’re even slightly interested in attending your first opera, or if it you’re an old opera-going pro.

14. The Dayton Philharmonic

The Dayton Philharmonic puts on a large variety of shows, so there’s something for every interest, regardless of the genre or style you prefer.

Their Masterworks Series is just what it sounds like — a celebration of the classical composers.

Then, there’s the SuperPops series, and the Rockin’ Orchestra Series (featuring music from Prince, Elton John, David Bowie, U2 and more). There are also chamber series, a family concert and holiday concerts.

15. Buckeye Brew Tours

Brought to you by Buckeye Road Trips, a Buckeye Brew Tour will help you get just a sampling of the almost a dozen different local breweries that are popping up all over Dayton.

A Buckeye brew hop bus will take you to three different brew pubs on an afternoon, and there you get to try three different flights, for a total of 12 brews to try.

Some of the stops on the tours include Lucky Star Brewery, Star City Brewing Company, the Dayton Beer Company, Eudora Brewing Co.

and so many more!

16. Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

A discovery and science museum for adults and children alike, there are tons of exhibits here on every subject from anthropology to paleontology, to geology and biology.

Permanent exhibits include the tidal pool, African room, the Discovery Zoo, a fully-enclosed treehouse and more.

Just about anything in the natural world that you want to discover, you’ll find it here!

17. America’s Packard Museum

While the last museum may have been kid-friendly, this one might not really catch their attention all that much.

America’s Packard Museum is one of the Top 10 auto museums in the United States, and is the only restored Packard dealership currently operating as a museum.

There are more than 50 cars on display in the Art Deco showroom, and has had such an influence on the city, that the surrounding neighborhood has been named Dayton’s Motorcar District.

18. Dayton Art Institute

The Dayton Art Institute’s permanent collection includes more than 26,000 pieces, from as long ago as 5,000 years.

While obviously not all of these objects can be on display at once, you can still find a ton to explore while you’re there.

The museum has three different sections, one for European art, one for American art and one for Asian art.

There are also separate galleries set aside just for African art, Oceanic art, Pre-Columbian art, Native American art and glassworks.

Founded in 1919, the institute overlooks the Great Miami River and also downtown Dayton, and the architecture was modeled after villas in Italy, near Rome, and supported by famous community leaders such as Orville Wright.

19. Victoria Theatre Association

This non-profit organization presents more than 300 performances each year, for all ages, within all genres.

They also feature touring Broadway shows, comedians, concerts and more.

They additionally show films, through their Cool Film series, which includes free popcorn and soda! You can’t really get any better than that, particularly for a family night! Other series include National Geographic Live and the Morris Furniture Co.

20. SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park

This park is preserving the SunWatch National Historic Landmark archaeological site, as well as the Native American culture related to it.

There are exploration opportunities both indoors and outdoors, all centered around the 800-year-old lifestyle of the former inhabitants.

Audioguide tours are available, and will tell you about the astronomical alignments of the recreated village, the process of building houses and bringing in the harvest and various stories that bring the center to life.

Each tour lasts about 45 minutes, and it’s only $2 per person, making it an easy and affordable attraction to visit in the Dayton area.

21. National Aviation Hall of Fame

Back to the aviation history! The National Aviation Hall of Fame recognizes those who have made an impact on the world of aviation, and was founded in 1962. The Learning Center both honors the enshrinees, and also addresses aviation history.

The center is separated into seven different areas, including an enshrined lab, and sections on early flight, World War I, the golden age of flight, World War II, the jet age and space exploration.

There are lots of hands-on experiences, perfect for younger visitors interested in learning more about aviation.

22. Fifth Third Field

Catch a minor league baseball game while you’re in town! At Fifth Third Field, the Dayton Dragons play for the locals, and they’ve held records for most consecutive sold-out games (more than 800!), so you know they must be doing something right.

The games are fun, filled with audience interaction and in a convenient location.

The Fifth Third Field is also home to the Midwest All-Star Games.

Overall, a minor league baseball game like this is a perfect way to end a day filled with celebrating America’s aviation history.

23. The Oregon District

If you like walking around historic neighborhoods, you definitely don’t want to miss the Oregon District.

Located in central Dayton, the 12-block area includes homes that date back as far as the 1820s! There are lots of dual residential and commercial structures that were built during the Victorian era here.

Now, the district is a hip neighborhood to hang out in, so you won’t just get to enjoy the beautiful architecture — you’ll also enjoy the various little shops, cafes, bars and galleries that are located within, thanks to the neighborhood’s attractive and distinct feel, that’s brought in popular business owners from around the city.

24. PNC 2nd Street Market

Do a little shopping before you leave town, with a stop at PNC 2nd Street Market.

This is Dayton’s oldest and largest public market, and is a great spot to check out the local goods.

It’s enclosed and open all year, so you never have to worry about the weather interfering with your plans.

Buy some local produce, cheeses, baked goods and more, to either take home in your suitcase, or to enjoy right then and there.

Plus, the market hosts various different events for the holiday seasons, adding a little something extra to the environment.

25. Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum

One of the five oldest rural garden cemeteries in the country, Woodland Cemetery was founded in 1841 and is not only a historic burial ground, but also a botanical resource.

There are more than 3,000 trees and 165 native specimens located on the 200 acres.

Many of these trees are more than 100 years old.

The chapel at the cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places, and features a beautiful Tiffany window.

The gravesites there include those of the Wright brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar and many more.

You also won’t want to miss the Woodland Mausoleum, and its 12 stained glass windows depicting themes from “The Messiah.”

It is considered a small city, but there is a lot to do, and Dayton is an innovation hub, so there is a lot of history. What to Do in Dayton, Ohio

There are many different things to do in Dayton, Ohio that are included in this ultimate travel guide. From museums and history to bars and sports, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

National United States Airforce Museum

Dayton is the home of Wilber and Orville Wright, the brothers who created the airplane.

There is a large US Airforce base northeast of the city, home to the National Airforce Museum. The museum is HUGE! It has hundreds of airplanes, missiles, and interactive exhibits. There are exhibits on the airplane’s invention, the use of airplanes in wars, and aviation in space.

Outside of the museum, there is a nice park with walking paths, benches, and memorials for important people in the aviation community.

Dayton Art Institute

Founded in 1919, the Dayton Art Institute is a highly rated art museum located in Downtown Dayton. The building itself is gorgeous. It was built in 1930, and it was modeled after a mansion in Capraola, Italy, and the signature stairs were modeled after the stairs at a famous villa in Rome. The building is a registered U.S. National Historic Place.

The museum is home to works by well-known artists including Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Five Rivers Metroparks

Dayton has 18 Metroparks – parks that are located in the city. Five Rivers Metroparks is named after the five rivers that run through Dayton.

If you are staying downtown or can only visit one Metropark, I would recommend Riverscape. It is located on the Miami River on the north end of downtown. It runs along the river with walking paths, swings, picnic tables, concerts, and ice skating.

Throughout the park, there are statues and informative plaques about the inventions that were created in Dayton.

The parks are scattered all around the city, and each park has different features and activities, so you can find one that suits your interests.

Oregon District

The Oregon District is Dayton’s primary shopping and entertainment area. It stretches two blocks on East 5th Street downtown. There are over fifty businesses, including restaurants, bars, theaters, beauty and tattoo shops, and retail stores.

The area was part of the original city, beginning in the 1820s until the revitalization in the 1960s. As the city expanded, the district was preserved and became a registered historic district in 1974.

Warped Wing Brewery

One block north of the Oregon District is Warped Wing, Dayton’s local brewery. The brewery has six permanent beers and a large variety of seasonal offerings.

The brewery does not have an outdoor area, but the inside tasting room is large. They sell food, and in addition to the beers, they have wine and cider. There are board games and a pinball machine for guests to play while they enjoy the beer.

They offer tours on weekends that come with a free beer to enjoy during the tour and a cute pint glass to take home!

Dayton Dragons Games

The Dayton Dragons are a minor league baseball team in the Cincinnati Reds organization. They play at Day Air Ballpark in downtown Dayton. Tickets to games are cheap, and they have many ticket packages for families. However, games are very popular! In 2011, the Dayton Dragons overtook the Portland Trailblazers record for the most consecutive sold-out games.  The Dragons still hold the record today at 1,315 sold-out games in a row.

College Basketball Game

The University of Dayton and Wright State University are located in Dayton, on the south and north sides, respectively. Both schools have good men’s basketball teams who are in the NCAA Tournament most years.

If you are not a basketball fan, or want to attend a free game, both colleges have a variety of other sports teams with free tickets.

2nd Street Market

Second Street Market is an indoor/outdoor farmers market in downtown Dayton that is open most of the year. The market has a booth for nearly everything. There is fresh, local produce, hot food stands, handmade clothing and jewelry, pet shops, jams, meats, dairy products, and much more! The market is open a few days a week and gets very busy on weekends! For more details on hours and vendors, check the website below.

Schuster Performing Arts Center

The Schuster Center in Dayton is a beautiful downtown performing art center. Constructed in 2003, the center is the heart of Dayton’s fine arts. The Schuster Center theaters host local, national, and international shows and events in a wide range of genres.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum

The Woodland Cemetary is located next to the University of Dayton in the south part of downtown. The Cemetery was founded in 1841. There are over three thousand trees and over one hundred and sixty species of plants. It is one of the oldest rural garden cemeteries in the United States. 

The cemetery is open year-round and is home to many famous gravesites. The Wright Brothers (Wilbur and Orville), the inventors of aviation, have a beautiful plot. Other notable people are the poet and author Paul Dunbar, comedian and writer Erma Bombeck, and inventors John Patterson and Charles Kettering.

Where to Stay & Staying Safe in Dayton, Ohio

These are the neighborhoods I recommend staying in when you travel to Dayton, Ohio since they offer good accessibility to the places above, but there are also surrounding suburbs that are a good option if you have a car.

• Downtown Dayton has many hotels and some modern Airbnb options. The location makes it easy to walk to many central attractions, and you can be close to the rivers for good views and walking paths.
• South Park is the cutest neighborhood in Dayton. The houses are all old and colorful. Using Airbnb, it is easy to find a place to stay in South Park, and the neighborhood makes it easy to walk downtown, the Oregon District, and the University of Dayton.

Dayton is similar to most cities; there are safe areas, and there are unsafe areas. According to locals and law enforcement in the city, anything east of I-75 (the highway which divides the city in half) is safer than the west side. Of course, this is not an exact divide, as the Art Institute is west of the highway, but it is a safe place to go. Take this with a grain of salt, but from my experience, the east side is safe.

Restaurants in Dayton, Ohio

Tank’s bar and grill.

For some greasy but delicious bar-style food, eat at Tank’s Bar & Grill. Tank’s has an amazing breakfast menu that is served all day, along with an American lunch and dinner menu.

Milano’s Subs

Milano’s has the best subs in Dayton, and possibly in Ohio! They make their own bread in house and bake it fresh everyday. 

South Park Tavern

For hot pizza, cold beer, and a good time, check out South Park Tavern. The pizza here is some of the best, and they have a huge variety of classic and specialties pizzas to choose from.

Getting There & Getting Around

Dayton is accessible by many major highways if you are driving from any larger midwest cities. There is also a small international airport north of the city. Cincinnati’s airport is also an option if you rent a car and the drive to Dayton is about an hour.

Bike Sharing!

The City of Dayton has a great bike-sharing program called Link Dayton. You can rent bikes all over the city for a few hours a day or get a membership for long-term access. There are Link stations near all the major attractions mentioned above and in many other locations. If the weather is nice, I would highly recommend using the bikes to get around town.

When to Travel to Dayton, Ohio

Dayton, Ohio is in the Midwestern part of the United States, so the best time to visit weather-wise is between April and September. This is Spring and Summer, so the weather is warm with no snow and little rain. Visiting from October to February is not bad if you do not mind the snow. You will not want to bike or walk very far, so it is best to have a car if you visit during these times.

If you visit between August and May, there will be college students at the universities’ bars and restaurants. There is usually a round of the March Madness basketball tournament held at one of the universities, so part of March will be busy and expensive.

National Museum of the United States Air Force

One of the major attractions in Dayton, Ohio, is the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the official museum of the US Air Force. A museum is an excellent place for the whole family and those interested in military history.

Situated at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the museum was founded in 1923, exhibiting rare aircraft, memorabilia, and aviation history artifacts and development.

Dayton Art Institute

Considered one of the top 10 best art museums for children in the US, the Dayton Art Institute is a fine arts museum initially established in 1919 and moved to a new location in 1930.

Today, the Italian Renaissance museum holds over 20,000 pieces of art collections. Some of the museum’s famous collections are After the Bath, Allegory of the Four Seasons, and Shimmering Madness.

Five Rivers MetroParks

A must-visit in Dayton is the public park district, the Five Rivers MetroParks. The 15,400 acres public park consists of 25 facilities offering plenty of activities to do in the Dayton metropolitan district.

Some of the activities in the park include hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. The park also has a golf course area and a butterfly house.

Carillon Historical Park

Another must-visit tourist attraction for history lovers is the 65-acre park and museum, the Carillon Historical Park. The museum will walk you through exhibits telling the history of technology, Dayton, and its inhabitants, dating back from 1796.

Carillon Historical Park was founded by Colonel Edward Deeds in 1940 and consists of Kettering Family Education Center, Wright Brothers Aviation Center, and other exhibits.

America’s Packard Museum

Visiting America’s Packard Museum is a beautiful way to step back in time to see beautiful vintage cars. The Citizens Motorcar Company, known as America’s Packard Museum, was built in 1917 and turned into a museum exhibiting Packard automobiles and memorabilia.

In 2004, the museum won the James Bradley Award of the Society of Automotive Historians and was considered one of the top 10 automotive museums in the US.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

If you travel to Dayton with kids, head to the children’s museum, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. The museum is also a science and technology center and zoo that will certainly keep your kids entertained.

Initially established in 1893, the museum consists of a planetarium, skeletons, native live animals, and other interactive activities such as the climbing area. Neisur the Mummy is also one of the museum’s great collections from Egypt.

SunWatch Indian Village Archaeological Park

Free Things to do in Dayton, Ohio

Are you looking for a weekend getaway in Southwest Ohio? Dayton is a really fun city, with lots of things to do.

As the birthplace of Orville Wright, and home to a major U.S. Air Force base, it’s also strongly associated with aviation.

So many people have asked me “What is there to do in Dayton Ohio for free” that I’ve put together this list of some free things to do in Dayton Ohio .

Free & Cheap Things to Do in Dayton

The following Dayton attractions are either free or fairly inexpensive to attend.

Some of these charge admission but have free days, so check ahead if you are looking for free admission. A weekend getaway in Dayton doesn’t have to be expensive.

If you want to, you can splurge on accommodations and a nice dinner out while saving money on these Dayton Ohio attractions. 

If you plan to spend the night, we suggest booking a room at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Downtown which is directly across the street from the Riverscape Metropark and Day Air Park.

Or, if you’re traveling with kids, the Drury Inn & Suites Dayton North n off I-75 is a great option that serves complimentary food and drinks for the 21+ crowd as well as a full, hot breakfast each morning.

Carillon Historical Park Concerts

The Carillon Historical Park is a favorite Dayton destination.

The open-air history museum covers 65 acres with many different things to see and do.

The park does charge admission, however, they do host free family-friendly concerts on Sunday afternoons in the summer months. 

Cox Arboretum

As part of the Five Rivers MetroParks System, this beautiful arboretum is free to visit.

Covering nearly 200 acres, Cox Arboretum includes 3 miles of trails, a children’s maze, an educational center, woodlands, and a conservation area.

You can also visit the Butterfly House, with dozens of varieties of butterflies native to Ohio. 

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

This National Park Service site has tons of information about the birth of aviation and its ties to Dayton.

In addition to many exhibits about the Wright brothers, you’ll also learn about Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of the first Black poets, who is also from Dayton. You can tour his home, as well as two visitor centers in the park. 

Disc golf is a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, get some exercise, and maybe spark a friendly competition with your friends or family.

Disc golf is a lot like regular golf, but with frisbees (well kinda). And it’s free!

Dayton has over a ton of disc golf courses scattered throughout the area. Grab your gear and a friend and head out!

Downtown Public Art Walk

Dayton has tons of great murals and public art in the downtown area.

It’s free to see, and they have even built an app to help you craft your own self-guided tour of Dayton’s public art. 

First Fridays

Visit downtown Dayton on the first Friday of each month for First Fridays.

Cruise through numerous art galleries while enjoying live music, street performers, and roaming entertainers.

Many local shops and restaurants will also have specials for the night, so plan a fun evening out on the town! 

While you will need to spend a little bit of money on equipment and a fishing license, once you have those necessities, fishing is free in many Dayton-area parks.

There are even a few parks in Dayton where you can fish without a license.

Fishing is a fun way to spend time outdoors and see wildlife. 

Great Miami Riverway

Did you know Ohio is home to the largest paved trail network in the country? The Great Miami Riverway stretches for 99 miles along the Great Miami River.

Connecting several riverfront communities, it’s the perfect place for a walk, bike, jog, or skate along the river.

If you have a kayak or canoe, there are also several free launch sites along the way. 

Iams Homestead Museum

This historical home was built in 1847 and was once home to the Iams family, whose son Paul Iams would go on to found the pet food company.

Now home to the Trotwood-Madison Historical Society, you can tour the mansion for free and admire many heirlooms and artifacts from the 19th century. 

Levitt Pavilion Dayton

Thanks to generous donors and sponsors, the Levitt Pavilion offers free entertainment in the summer months.

With over 40 free concerts scheduled this summer, this is a fun, free event for the whole family, right in the heart of downtown Dayton. 

So grab your lawn chairs or blankets and stake out your space on the lawn to get comfortable and enjoy the entertainment.

National Museum of the United States Air Force

This free Dayton museum is the oldest and largest military aviation museum in the world .

Located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, they have more than 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles on display.

Another beautiful place to experience the natural side of Dayton is at Wegerzyn Gardens .

Here you’ll find ten formal gardens, which have been meticulously landscaped. The gardens are meant to inspire you with ideas for your own garden.

Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum

Cemeteries can be a great place to explore during your travels, and Dayton’s Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is a perfect example.

It is one of the oldest garden-style cemeteries in the country and covers over 200 acres.

The Wright Brothers are buried here, as well as Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Erma Bombeck.

Wright Brothers Memorial

Overlooking the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the Wright Brothers got their start, this monument is dedicated to these pioneers of flight .

It also lists the names of over 100 pilots who were trained here at the Wright School of Aviation.

Side note: There is also a Wright Brothers Memorial in the Outer Banks of North Carolina , site of their first successful flight.

They aren’t always free, but with a little bit of advance planning, you can take advantage of free days at these Dayton museums.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

This Dayton museum is an all-in-one destination for any Dayton family vacation.

It includes a children’s museum, a science and technology center, and a zoo featuring animals native to Ohio. It also has an observatory!

Every year, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery hosts four Super Science Saturday events, which include free admission to the museum. 

The 2023 remaining dates are August 5th and November 18th, which is also the Science Festival.

Dayton Art Institute

This art museum in Dayton has been rated as one of the top ten art museums in the country for children.

The collection spans 5,000 years of art history and includes art from all over the world as well as glass, photography, and outdoor sculptures.

Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders get one free ticket to the Dayton Art Institute on the first full weekend of each month during the Museums on Us program .

Here's what you need to know before moving to Ohio.

Ohio, with its vast river valleys, scenic rolling hills, lush state parks, UNESCO-listed sites, and top-notch entertainment, receives over 200 million visitors each year . But the Buckeye State has also emerged as an increasingly popular destination to call home, welcoming over 200,000 new out-of-state residents in 2022 , most relocating from Florida. 

While everyone's reasons for putting down roots in a new place are different, several factors make Ohio a desirable place to live. The state's low cost of living, eight percent lower than the national average, and affordable housing — the median home price is $217,698 — are certainly a major draw both for young families looking for a place to settle down and retirees seeking a budget-friendly destination to spend their golden years.

And there are plenty of charming communities to consider — from peaceful small towns to bustling cities, these are the best places to live in Ohio.

"One of the best things about Dayton is that despite its size, it still has a small-town feel — you'll be greeted with a smile and polite hello no matter where you go," Dayton-based president of Irongate Inc., Realtors Rhonda Chambal said of this city of over 137,000 residents. Dayton is home to one of the largest Air Force bases in the country, employing over 30,000 people. Healthcare, defense, and education are three of the city's most important industries, with an unemployment rate of four percent , just 0.1 percent higher than the national average. 

Chambal explained that the relatively low cost of living (about six percent below the national average), proximity to larger cities (Cincinnati and Columbus are about an hour away), good-rated school districts, diverse dining options, and a rich cultural scene attract people to the area.

Another major draw? According to Zillow, the median home value in Dayton is around $143,000 , over $200,000 below the national average.

With 10 percent of Cincinnati covered in parks, the third-largest city in Ohio is also one of the nation's greenest. Sports fans here have three professional teams to support, but it is art enthusiasts who probably have it best. With over two dozen top-notch museums and at least 10 performance venues and theaters, the city is an art lover's paradise. 

"While most of the state is very flat, Cincinnati is set among rolling, green hills overlooking the Ohio River, offering outdoor recreation year-round and a milder climate than our northern neighbors," Steve Early, a realtor at Sibcy Cline Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , added. "From suburbs with large yards to urban living on the streetcar line with award-winning dining only steps away, this affordable city has never been more vibrant and diverse."

Because the city is rooted in history, newcomers can find all types of homes — from historic Victorian and craftsman houses to modern apartments and urban lofts. But best of all, home values here are well below the national average — currently around $235,00, according to Zillow .

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Toledo is the perfect home base for those seeking scenic waterfront views, a laid-back lifestyle, and endless outdoor recreation. The city's bustling art scene includes the world-class Toledo Museum of Art. And sports fans will thrive here — Toledo has many sports venues and a Minor League Baseball team. But most importantly, the city blends low cost of living — almost 28 percent below the national average — and affordable housing. In fact, Toledo's real estate market was ranked best in the country in 2024. Currently, median home values stand at about $116,000, also attracting many retirees on a budget .

This beautiful northeast Ohio city recently outperformed 150 urban areas nationwide and ranked first in U.S. News & World Report's list of the most affordable places to retire . Thanks to its bustling arts scene, excellent healthcare facilities, proximity to larger cities, and affordable cost of living (18 percent lower than the national average), Youngstown is an excellent place to call home, whether you're a young professional or a senior.

"On the business spectrum, Youngstown is home to several companies, including the DeBartolo Corporation, Steelite International, and Gasser Chair. Youngstown has successfully changed the narrative from 'Rust' to 'Tech Belt,' leading the way in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, thanks to our nationally recognized business incubator ," Patrick Burgan, owner and broker at Burgan Real Estate , explained.

And even though home prices are on the rise, they are still much more affordable than in other areas of the country; the median home price in the Mahoning Valley is $178,000.

If access to world-class healthcare facilities is a priority, then Cleveland should be at the top of your list. The city is home to two of the largest multi-branch medical centers in the country, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as several children's hospitals. 

"Adding to Cleveland's appeal is that we're known for diversity and culture. University Circle is a hub for global arts, higher education, culture, and science," Janis McCormick, regional vice president of Ohio East at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International , said, noting that the city's year-round cultural festivals, local craft brewery scene, and street fairs also add to its appeal with newcomers. The city is also ranked one of the best places to retire in the country , where monthly expenses don't exceed $1,700.

In terms of real estate, McCormick explained that the city offers a range of architectural styles.

"For instance, we have urban, country, and small-town settings. You can find a bungalow on the river just a short walk from the city center or a 10-acre ranch estate. We also have a lot of very neat midcentury modern homes built around the time of the Frank Lloyd era that are sprinkled throughout Cleveland," she added. 

Median home values in Cleveland hover around the $100,000 mark , which makes the city one of the most affordable urban areas in the country.

To say that Columbus is booming right now would be an understatement. The city's population grew faster than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. in the second half of 2023, primarily thanks to its affordable cost of living and housing. 

"It is a goldmine for anyone looking to move their career up a notch," Julie Wills, a real estate agent at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, said. "Here, you've got everything from big Fortune 500 companies to buzzing startups and a whole spectrum of industries, from tech to healthcare. Throw in top-notch schools and a vibe that's all about family, and you've got yourself more than just a place to visit."

10 percent of the city's population is aged 65 or over, which is good news for those who want to retire here, as the city also offers plenty of activities for seniors .

Home prices in Columbus have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past eight years, with no sign of slowing down. However, they are still affordable for first-time buyers. The median home price is around $240,000, and Wills explained that as values keep climbing, those who invest in property right now are looking at a "sweet return down the line."

Just like a few other places in Ohio, Akron was also recently spotlighted as a sought-after destination for retirees, but the city, which is also the birthplace of NBA superstar LeBron James, has a lot to offer families and young professionals. A beautiful parks system, excellent healthcare facilities, arts centers and museums, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and a Minor League Baseball team are just some of the amenities and urban facilities that make Akron a wonderful place to live.

"Akron has grown so much over the years. Businesses are booming and people are excited to move here," Ann Kyner, vice president and regional manager at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services , said. "We have a little of everything here — from charming historic homes to colonial and ranch-style residences. Just outside our downtown area, there are communities with horses and stables. It doesn't take much of a drive beyond the city center before you find a more rural vibe, complete with equestrians riding the trails."

And while real estate prices have gone up over eight percent since last year, the median home value has remained under $130,000, according to Zillow .

If bustling Columbus is not your cup of tea, consider this mid-size town of about 50,000 just 40 miles east of Ohio's capital. Newark is undergoing a major downtown restoration, making the town even more attractive to new residents. The city is a great place for families thanks to its many parks and green spaces (the 775-acre Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is nearby), good schools, and affordable home prices — the current median house value is $217,000, up 10 percent since last year.

Highlighted as the third-best emerging housing market in the country in a recent report by The Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com, Canton is an under-the-radar town an hour south of Cleveland. One of its most well-known landmarks is the Football Hall of Fame, but Canton is chock-full of galleries, museums, parks, and top-notch dining spots.

"Canton is very affordable and full of places for adventure and new experiences," Dominic Fonte, a real estate agent at Cutler Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International , explained, noting that the town's neighborhoods offer a great variety of schools, amenities, and home styles such as ranches, apartments, and new construction residences.
