Nowadays, Pocono Raceway hosts a handful of NASCAR races every summer, while a variety of other car-related experiences are available when races are not taking place. Visitors can ride in or drive a stock car, bring their own car for a spin on the famous track, choose from a selection of exotic cars to take for a test drive and more. 

Past travelers praised the stock car ride-along experience, saying that the G-force going around the track's iconic corners provides an adrenaline rush. The park's clean atmosphere, from the restrooms to the vendors, also impresses most recent visitors. This luxurious mansion was constructed in 1861 for Asa Packer, a railroad magnate who founded Lehigh University. Construction of the three-story, 18-room home took two years and cost $14,000. The roughly 11,000-square-foot mansion has served as a museum since 1956 and holds the distinction of a National Historic Landmark. Tours showcase the mansion and an assortment of artifacts, as well as cover the interesting history of Packer and his family.

The coaches for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway were built as early as 1917, meaning the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is sure to make the day of any ferroequinologist, or a person who studies trains. The trains are most often pulled by diesel engines, but the railroad occasionally uses steam locomotives. The 16-mile, roughly one-hour round trip weaves through the Lehigh Gorge State Park . The exact length of trips varies depending on the season, and the railway offers special excursions for events like fall foliage.

Past travelers suggested splurging the extra couple bucks for an open-air car if the weather is nice. Arrive early, though, as visitors warned that tickets are tricky to get, especially during the fall foliage months and other special excursions. Also, while the beautiful scenery impresses most riders, they advised future passengers to keep in mind that the train takes the same route out and back, so the second half of the trip is a repeat.

You'll want to watch your step, though, as the boulder field provides ample opportunity for twisted ankles. Hawks Falls serves as the park's second most popular attraction, and recent travelers said that the large waterfall is worth the short hike along Hawks Falls Trail.

The Red Dot Trail is particularly steep and rocky, though the full loop is only 3 miles, so it's recommended to take the Red Dot Trail up and the Blue Blaze Trail down. The recreation areas fall foliage also impresses recent adventurers, meeting their high expectations for the region's autumn colors.

Going hand in hand with natural beauty is natural bounty, and the Poconos certainly don't skimp on ways to enjoy a taste of the region's offerings. Farms dot the area surrounding small Pennsylvania towns like Stroudsburg and Lake Harmony, while farmers markets set up shop in regular intervals to sell flowers, fruits and cheeses. Whether you stop by and stock up, or simply want to stroll, smell and sample, the assorted farmers markets provide a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or morning.

Past visitors recommend bringing cash, as some options like the Lake Harmony farmers market don't accept cards. While shoppers marveled at the array of options, baked goods seemed to be a favorite across all of the markets.

Attraction Spotlight: Jack Frost Big Boulder

Jack Frost has six dining options on the mountain, including The Frosty Toboggan Bar & Grill, which offers table service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Fiddler's Fridge In E-2000 Bar & Lounge offers après-ski, live music, and dancing.

Big Boulder Mountain provides a distinctly different experience with the most progressive and innovative terrain park system in the Poconos. The mountain features ten trails and five terrain parks. Trails span a vertical drop of 475 feet from a summit elevation of 2,175 feet. The terrain parks at Big Boulder were recognized in 2016 by Transworld Magazine and Newschoolers.com as belonging among the top five terrain parks in the Eastern United States. The terrain parks offer a variety of features, including tree bonks, various rails and boxes, wallrides, tubes, and A-frames. Terrain parks are accessible to both beginner and expert snowboarders. Visitors will find two of the resort’s three retail shops on this mountain, including the Boulder Park Lodge Shop and The Basement. Big Boulder Mountain offers five distinct dining options, from family-night pizza deals at the Lodge Cafeteria to the Burrito Bar at the Cantina, where guests can create their own burritos.

With extensive snowmaking capabilities, Jack Frost Big Boulder has consistently been the first park in the area to open and the last to close each season. Rental shops are located at the base of each mountain and offer tune and repair services in addition to equipment rentals. Lockers and bag checks are available at both mountains and may be used daily, or guests may purchase annual passes to store belongings through the season. Lockers can hold up to 4 sets of skis and snowboards. Both mountains offer snowtubing. The 3-hour long sessions begin at set times, so visitors are encouraged to check the website for the schedule ahead of time.

History: Jack Frost Big Boulder was the first commercial ski resort in Pennsylvania and the first to successfully use snowmaking on a commercial slope. In the 1940s at the height of the coal mining industry, employees of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company built a company retreat on the shores of Lake Harmony called the Split Rock Club, which included the Hazzard Ski Slope. In 1947, the lodge was sold and Hazzard became known as the Big Boulder Ski Area. Jack Frost opened in 1972 as a companion resort to the Big Boulder Ski Area, and both mountains now collectively operate as Jack Frost Big Boulder. Guests are welcome to use both resorts on the same lift ticket. JFBB proudly claims to be the first snowmaking mountain. The snowmaking machine was invented by a Big Boulder Ski Area employee, John Guresh, in 1956. Guresh’s machine resembled a sprinkler and created ice crystals that mimicked the look and feel of snow. Today’s JFBB resort is a subsidy of Peak Resorts, which owns and manages a dozen ski resorts, primarily in the Northeastern United States.

Ongoing Programs and Education: The Ski School at JFBB offers a variety of programming for children and adults. Children’s Day Programs are available for kids aged 3-10. Adult Group Programs offer 1 or 3-hour lessons for beginners or advanced skiers. An Adaptive Program is available on weekends for skiers with disabilities. Junior development and ski teams meet each weekend throughout the season, and there is a racing program available for parents as well. In addition to private and group lessons, a variety of weekend workshops and seminars are scheduled each season and are updated on the JFBB website.

Past and Future Exhibits: Past seminars at JFBB have included a Women’s Weekend Workshop. This 2-day intensive ski and snowboard workshop for women aged 18 and above was coached by women and included breakfast in the morning and a cocktail hour after the day’s skiing. The 2016–2017 season included Senior Wednesday Clinics for skiers over the age of 60 as well as Thursday Men’s Clinics and Ladies’ Tuesday clinics. Clinics met weekly and were free with the purchase of a lift ticket.

Attraction Spotlight: Pocono Environmental Education Center

Although the first year proved to be difficult for the Pocono Environmental Education Center, the Center persevered and quickly created new initiatives and began renovations. What used to be the honeymoon resort quickly became the perfect and ideal facility for the Pocono Environmental Education Center. Within one year of opening, approximately 1,800 people participated in at least one of the Center’s programs.

Although the Pocono Environmental Education Center spent their early years within a partnership with the Keystone Junior College, the Center incorporated as their own non-profit organization, which was also private, in 1986. With this change, the Center’s Board of Trustees went from only seven members to more than twenty. The number of staff also increased. In 1972, the Center only had four employees, but by the mid-1980s, the Center had around 24 employees. With a larger staff and Board of Trustees, as well as new initiatives and sole control, the annual visitors and participants exponentially increased.

In recent years, the Pocono Environmental Education Center has continued to expand its programs and facilities. During the early 2000s, the Center renovated their Dining Hall, as well as open the Visitor Activity Center and YURT village.

Main Education Building is the premier location for most of the Pocono Environmental Education Center’s activities, presentations, gatherings, and classes. The Main Education Building contains offices, classrooms, educational displays, and even a bookstore.

The Nature Lodge is the perfect location for smaller gatherings, as well as smaller sized classes and activities. Many private events take place at the Nature Lodge.

Outdoor Teaching / Meeting Venues are a series of pavilion and gazeboes, which serve as the perfect place for outdoor activities, gatherings, and classes.

Since the Center is primarily used as a public park for exploration, recreational activities, and outdoor sports, majority of visitors spend their time exploring the natural outdoor elements of the Center, and head to one of the attractions to participate in a short class or presentation.

Fossil Trail – Blue Blazed is a moderately difficult hiking trail that is approximately 1.03 miles long. Visitors can explore the hardwood ravine and various fossils located near the trail.

Ridgeline Trail – Yellow Blazed is a moderately difficult hiking trail that is approximately 3.63 miles long. This trail takes visitors around oak0hickory forests, wetlands, hilly terrain, and the shady hemlock ravines.

Scenic Gorge Trail – Red Blazed is a moderately easy hiking trail that is 1.5 miles long, and perfect for people who want to explore the hardwood forest and Spackman’s Creek.

Go ziplining in Kittatinny

Make like the bald eagles and peregrine falcons that call this area home and soar over the treetops on a zipline. The area is home to several places to hook on, including Kittatinny located near the Delaware River, which lets adventurers fly down a private mountain 150ft in the air at speeds up to 60mph.

The Treetop Adventure Course at Skytop Lodge, about 45 minutes from Scranton, PA , is over 3000ft of elevated bridges and challenging (but delightfully fun) obstacles. Open in the warmer months, check before booking for age and height requirements.

Glide down a mountain

Pennsylvanians come from all over the state each winter to queue up at lift lines and zip down the slopes at mountains such as  Jack Frost and Big Boulder , Shawnee , and Camelback .

Roll the dice at the Mount Airy Casino Resort

Go for a hike at Big Pocono State Park

The 1300-acre Big Pocono State Park has over eight miles of mountaintop hiking trails, with sweeping views of New Jersey , New York and Pennsylvania from its peaks. The park’s three picnic areas also have tables and charcoal grills, so pack provisions and enjoy lunch or dinner overlooking a beautiful forested panorama.

Horseback riding and mountain biking are also open on certain trails, and there’s plenty of fauna and flora – from blueberry bushes to mountain laurel and wildflowers – to admire. The park closes in the winter months and reopens in April.

The 400-acre Seven Tubs Recreation Area inside Pinchot State Forest gets its name from the potholes created by glacial meltwater. Hike one of two trails – the 0.3-mile main loop that takes you directly to the tubs, or the 1.8-mile Audubon Loop Trail that shows off a bit more of the surrounding streams and mountains.

Sample craft beer and sake!

Award-winning beers, a spacious brewpub, and a kids' menu make Wallenpaupack Brewing Company in Hawley, Pennsylvania a supremely family-friendly spot. In the summer, the sprawling outdoor beer garden has lawn games and picnic tables. When it comes to the menu, try some of the creative offerings, like jalapeno cream ale, pink guava IPA, and fruited sour.

In Honesdale, visit Here and Now Brewing for an ever-changing selection of IPAs made in small batches using seasonal and local ingredients. Open in the summertime, visit Second District Brew Farm for microbrews with a verdant view.

Looking for something a little different? Sango Kura is Pennsylvania’s first and only sake brewery and is located in Delaware Water Gap. Order a bottle of dry-hopped sake with a bowl of spicy pork bone marrow ramen made with handcrafted noodles.

Visit Bushkill Falls and its eight waterfalls

Also known as the “Niagara Falls of Pennsylvania”, Bushkill Falls is actually a series of eight waterfalls, along with a web of hiking trails set amid lush woodland.

Trails range from easy – the green trail takes about 15 minutes and doesn’t involve climbing – to more difficult. The most arduous is the red trail, which takes about two hours to traverse about two miles, and shows off views of all eight falls.

Bushkill’s 300-acre recreation area also includes fishing and paddle boating on Twin Lakes, picnic pavilions and a sprawling kids’ playground – it closes in the winter and reopens in the spring.

Take a dip in the Delaware River

Delaware Water Gap is a National Recreation Area encompassing 70,000 acres around the Delaware River in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Besides hiking and biking trails, boating and fishing, swimming is a popular activity here, thanks to the area’s three accessible beaches.

On the PA side, Milford Beach and Smithfield Beach both have restroom facilities, boat launches and picnic areas (there are no grills, but you can bring your own).

From the beach, there’s easy access to Joseph M. McDade Recreational Trail, which has beautiful river views for hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers of all levels.

Go fishing for trout at Hickory Run State Park

Hickory Run State Park ’s 400-by-1800ft boulder field attracts visitors from all over the state. Giant gray rocks 12ft deep (and some 26ft long) carpet the entire area. The landscape has stayed nearly the same for over 20,000 years.

But one of the park’s best draws is the trove of fishing spots. Some of its streams are stocked with brown and brook trout, and some have a native trout population. Hawk Run, for example, is classified as a Class A Wild Trout Stream.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has a calendar of events , too, which includes classes like introduction to fly fishing. The free class meets at the park visitors center, and includes all the gear and expert instruction on casting techniques, knot tying, and more basic skills to get you angling like a pro in no time.

Go for a horseback ride

The Poconos offer plenty of places to saddle up for a guided tour. Bushkill Riding Stables in East Stroudsburg offers 30- to 45-minute trail rides all year long.

Daisy Field Farm near White Haven offers family trail rides that bring together the whole crew for an outing accessible to any skill level. Wagon and sleigh rides are also on offer when there’s snow on the ground. There’s also a farm to enjoy with the kids.

Mountain Creek Riding Stables in Cresco cater to beginners and intermediate riders for its scenic, daily and year-round forest trails.

Explore the historic town of Jim Thorpe

Named after Native American Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe (from the Sac and Fox nation), the small town bisected by the Lehigh River is filled with history and charm.

Stroll Broadway and stop into shops like Somersault Letterpress to admire handcrafted cards and stationery made with vintage machines from the 1930s and 50s. At Wild Elder Wine & Cider Co. , order a flight to sample sparkling Elderberry cider and native grape wines. Oh, and please don’t miss Donerds Donuts and their tasty handmade treats next door.

Trace the town’s history with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion , a museum and former home of the railroad magnate and Lehigh University Founder. Docent-guided tours are available when the museum is open, from April to November.

Before leaving town, sit down for dinner at Notch Eight Craft House, where plates of smoked brisket tacos and cheesy tots are paired with Pennsylvania-made beer and booze.

Note: Although Thorpe is buried in Pennsylvania, his relatives have unsuccessfully long petitioned for his bones to be brought back to Oklahoma.

Sip locally made spirits

Several Poconos distilleries have tasting rooms where you can sample made-from-scratch spirits. At Silverback Distillery , a mother-daughter duo is crafting small-batch bourbon and citrus-infused gin. Visit the tasting room in East Stroudsburg for cocktail flights, and while they offer some snacks, you can also bring your own feast.

At Barley Creek Distillery in Tannersville, try small-batch spirits like vodka, whiskey and moonshine, and a line of ready-to-drink canned cocktails.

Sorrenti Family Estate is the oldest winery in the Poconos, but also makes spirits and wood-fired pizzas (try the Michaelangelo). Visit the tasting room, and on warmer days, sit outside on the veranda.

Shop for farm-fresh provisions

A bounty of farmers, bakers, and other makers offer a true taste of the region from roadside farm stands and small shops. Check out Village Farmer and Bakery in Delaware Water Gap for over 30 varieties of pies – including cherry, apple crumb and shoofly – made daily.

Pocono Organics in Blakeslee is North America’s largest regenerative organic-certified farm. Browse the market for farm-fresh groceries, and stay for lunch at the cafe for chef-crafted soups and salads.

This activity is fun for all ages and levels, so you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy mountain biking here. And you can do multiple runs, too, as there’s a quad lift to quickly bring you back up to the summit. Open May through October, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance .

Hike the McDade Recreational Trail

There are many hiking trails in the Pocono Mountains, but for a stress-free and fun day, choose the McDade Recreational Trail, located in Monroe County. It’s a 31-mile trail that’s considered easy-to-moderate, with clearly marked trails and a ton of beautiful scenery. With access points every few miles, it boasts stunning views of the Delaware River, farmlands, historic sites, and even a beach. It’s pet-friendly, so feel to bring your dog along for the hike.

Home to plenty of rivers and lakes, the Poconos are hugely popular for kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts. If you're new to paddling, consider joining a group tour and renting all of your equipment from the canoe or kayak tour company. (It's best to schedule in advance!) Otherwise, it's easy to find a location that best suited to your skillset.

Go Birdwatching at Promised Land State Park

Calling all birdwatchers! The Promised Land State Park in Greentown, Pennsylvania is considered one of the best destinations in the Poconos to gaze at the many avian species who live or migrate here. In fact, the National Audubon Society has designated it an “Important Bird Area.” With over 3,000 acres, this park is situated on the “Pocono plateau,” which is about 1,800 feet above sea level. You’ll see songbirds here—including American redstarts and Blackburnian warblers—and you can even view an eagle’s nest from the Wildlife Observation Center.

Tour a Historical Mansion

Located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, The Mansion is a Pocono landmark, built in the late 1800s by Asa Packer, philanthropist and founder of Lehigh University. Designed by architect Samuel Sloan, the home today features an abundance of awe-inspiring art and artifacts from the last century. Visitors are welcome to tour the mansion, as well as the surrounding picturesque grounds; for tickets and tour information, be sure to check out the official website as tour times may vary.

Ride the Rails Into Lehigh George State Park

Taking a ride on the Pocono’s Lehigh George Scenic Railway train is a relaxing and delightful experience. Operated by Reading and Northern Railroad, the train travels 16 miles round trip from Downtown Jim Thorpe into Lehigh George State Park. Along the way, the narrated excursion will provide you with interesting information about local history, wildlife, and nature. As the train curves along the Lehigh Valley and the gorge, you’ll be mesmerized by the incredible views. Be sure to purchase tickets in advance .

Explore the Lost River Caverns

The Lost River Caverns in Hellertown, Pennsylvania is a fascinating tourist attraction that’s been in existence since the 1930s. A former limestone quarry, the cavern is home to an array of stunning crystal and rock formations, mostly made of dolomite. Here, you can take an underground guided walking tour along 1,000 feet of paved walkways. (It’s best to schedule a tour in advance; you can purchase tickets on the website .) Afterwards, stick around to admire a reconstructed gem mill, walk along nature trails, visit the Gilman Museum, and purchase gems and jewelry from the gift shop.

Tour the Old Jail Museum

Located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, this historic stone structure was built in the 1800s and has nearly 80 rooms, a warden’s quarters, and dungeons. 15 Fantastic Things To Do In The Beautiful Poconos

The Poconos — when people our age hear the name, many immediately think of the champagne tower whirlpools and heart-shaped tubs so heavily advertised in the ’70s as The Honeymoon Capital of the World. These experiences are still available, but the reality is there is so much more for the mature traveler to enjoy in the Pocono Mountains.

The Pocono Mountains are located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The 2,400-square-mile area has long been a popular outdoor recreation area boasting hunting, fishing, skiing, and more. The Pocono Mountains are within a two-hour drive of multiple metropolitan areas such as New York and Philadelphia.

Many interstates and highways connect to the Pocono Region, including PA Route 903, known as the Highway to Adventure due to the numerous resorts and venues along this stretch of highway. Two airports serve the Poconos: the Lehigh Valley International Airport and Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport, which is just outside the region.

I enjoy the Pocono Mountain area because there is something for everyone. I’ve visited twice and I am planning a third trip in the fall. The mountains are beautiful. Some resorts are luxurious. Some are rustic. There are quaint bed and breakfasts, adult-only inns, big-name entertainment venues, and some great wineries and breweries. There is excellent hiking, fishing, skiing, leaf-peeping, waterparks, and the list goes on.

A family-friendly outdoor vacation region, there is much to do for the mature traveler. Here are some of my favorite things the 50+ traveler will enjoy in the Poconos.

1. Take A Hike

The Pocono Mountains region includes 261 miles of hiking trails. With two national and nine state parks, the Appalachian Trail, and Bushkill Falls, you can find a hiking trail for any skill level and you will enjoy breathtaking scenery as you hike.

As with any hiking adventure, be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes to avoid injury.

2. Visit Waterfalls

You will find many impressive cascades in the Pocono Mountains. The “Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls is one of the most impressive.

Bushkill Falls includes eight natural waterfalls inside a privately owned 300-acre park. There is an entrance fee, and you must climb steps for the best view, but it is well worth it. If you want to see a few other waterfalls, take the challenging Red Trail hike that runs almost two miles and provides views of eight falls, including Bridal Veil Falls, Bridesmaid’s Falls, Pennell Falls, and the Lower Gorge Falls. The hike takes a minimum of two hours and is open April through October. Other attractions include miniature golf, paddleboats, play areas, and dining spots, including a fudge kitchen with ice cream and a snack bar. They offer free parking.

3. Walk Through A Covered Bridge

Visit Beltzville State Park and walk through the Harrity Covered Bridge. It is one of many covered bridges to experience in Pennsylvania . This bridge, built in 1841, is for pedestrians to enjoy. It is flat and a quick half-hour stop. The park also boasts some beautiful hiking and biking trails if you wish to spend more time.

4. Check Out A Boulder Field

Boulder Field at Hickory Run State Park was formed from glacial ice melt and is recognized as a National Natural Landmark. Unchanged for over 20,000 years, some boulders are 26 feet long. This would be a half-hour stop.

5. Enjoy Some Roadside Oddities

From a haunted Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe to a giant gorilla statue and other oddities at Country Junction , the Poconos are full of unique roadside attractions. You can even tour an ice sculpture factory and check out the museum in Lakeville at Sculpted Ice Works .

These stops will take as much time as you want — a half-hour here and 15 minutes there. I’d plan for a half-day if seeing more than one.

6. Explore Small Towns With Big Charm

Visit some of the small towns nestled in the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe, Stroudsburg, and Milford all offer picturesque splendor, rich histories, and quaint eateries.

Jim Thorpe offers some waterway adventures such as white-water rafting and kayaking on the Lehigh River. If you desire a less strenuous activity, enjoy a train ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway .

Stroudsburg is known for its museums and galleries, like the Stroud Mansion , Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm , and Pocono Arts Council . They offer fun workshops and special programs year-round.

Milford gives you the best of small-town America. They offer cultural vibrancy, heritage attractions, and more.

7. Learn About Mining

Explore the No. 9 Mine and Museum . Take a walking tour of the mine that dates back to 1855. Ride in a mine car into the mountain. Visit the museum that houses the most extensive collection of mining artifacts in the area and is located in the original “wash shanty.”

Plan for a half-day visit to this area.

8. View The Lehigh Gorge By Train

Diesel engines pull vintage coaches through picturesque places on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway . Most times, you can ride from Jim Thorpe into the Lehigh Gorge State Park . The trip follows the majestic Lehigh River and is a narrated trip.

This would be a half-day visit.

9. Visit Steamtown National Historic Site

Learn the history of the people who built and rode the steam trains and the history of railroad transportation at Steamtown National Historic Site . Steamtown works to preserve a special part of America’s industrial past. You can even take a steam train passenger excursion! Choo, choo!

Visiting Steamtown would be a half-day event. While the museum and grounds are wheelchair-accessible, the train ride itself is not. You have two steps up to the train.

10. Shoot Some Craps

The Mount Airy Casino Resort offers 1,800 slot machines from penny machines up to the big bets. If you enjoy the thrill of live table games, Mount Airy has you covered. They offer table games including blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker. The length of time for this visit is dependent on how long you wish to stay or if your money runs out.

11. Visit A Waterpark

Before you say No way! remember, waterparks are not just for kids. The Poconos have some gorgeous waterparks that cater to the mature traveler. If you visit mid-week during the school year, you will find lots of peace and quiet and fun. Think lazy river rides, hot tub pools, swim-up bars, wave pools, and more.

My current favorite Pocono waterpark is Kalahari . When we visited, we enjoyed a two-bedroom suite on the ground floor so we were near the waterpark. I loved the large hot tub pool where you could swim in or out.

Another excellent waterpark for the 50+ traveler in the Poconos is the Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark that features the Mystic Springs Spa Lagoon.

If you want an adults-only feel to the entire resort, check out the Mount Airy Casino Resort . While not a waterpark, they have a beautiful pool with lovely amenities.

Anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day at a waterpark is terrific.

12. Go Leaf-Peeping

If you visit in October, take advantage of the most beautiful picturesque fall foliage.

The Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania are a sight to behold in autumn. Be sure to take your camera from the scenic Delaware Water Gap to Bushkill Falls. You will find plenty of photo opportunities for technicolor leaves in this area! Leaves can be viewed by car, and you can spend as much time as you wish driving around seeing Mother Nature’s spectacular showcase.

13. Play A Round Of Golf

Enjoy hitting the links at one of eight golf courses in the Pocono Mountains.

14. Enjoy A Stock Car Experience

The Pocono Raceway offers a stock car experience, or maybe catch a NASCAR race while you are in town.

15. Sample Pocono Libations

Taste some brews and wines made in the Poconos. Tour a microbrewery, sample distilled spirits, or stop by a winery at locations across the region. Pocono beer, wine, and spirits are made from local ingredients and are curated for excellence.

However you choose to spend your time in the beautiful Pocono Mountains, you can be sure it will be a vacation to remember.

P.S. If you want to try those heart-shaped tubs I mentioned at the beginning, they still exist at adult-only destinations like Paradise Stream Resort , Cove Haven Resort , and Pocono Palace Resort . Kalahari has added a few to their honeymoon suites as well.

35 Fun & Quirky Things to Do in the Poconos (That Aren’t the Usual Tourist Traps)

Looking for things to do in the Poconos that aren’t the usual tourist sites? I’ve got you covered!

As an almost life-long resident of the Poconos in Pennsylvania, I thought I’d found pretty much every exciting thing to do in my area. Boy, was I wrong! I spent a few hours trying to find something interesting to do this spring. I discovered so many new places to explore and rediscovered some old favorites!

Whether you’re a lifelong resident like me, a weekend tourist, or planing your very first Poconos vacation, check out these 35 “off the beaten path” places to explore in and around the Poconos!

2021 Update: Some readers have mentioned that Eddie’s Toy Museum below has since closed down. With the pandemic, others may either be currently or permanently closed as well. I’m in the process of updating this to reflect that.

Offbeat Things to Do in the Poconos

While “offbeat” and “quirky” are definitely subjective, I tried to fill this list of things to do in the Poconos with things that you wouldn’t typically consider right away. Everyone goes to the ski resorts in the winter or one of the many Poconos water parks (I think we’re up to like 5 and counting now) in the summer. They gamble or catch live music at the casino, or hit the Crossing Outlets for shopping.

I’m not going to tell you about things you’ve probably seen on a million and one Pocono entertainment guides. Instead, you’ll find a huge variety of activities for just about every interest, from weird little museums to less crowded parks to funky little places to grab a yummy pie!

Top 20 Things to Do in the Poconos

1. the frazetta art museum.

Growing up in the Poconos, Frank Frazetta was just a guy who owned a super creepy costume shop. I didn’t realize he was a world-famous fantasy artist until I was at a co-worker’s house in Maine. I saw a cool painting on her wall and was surprised when I saw the artist’s name. Frank Frazetta passed away a few years ago, but his son turned part of his family home into a museum dedicated to his life work.

I haven’t been to it yet, but I’ve heard great things about it! The museum is open Thurs-Sun, 10am-4pm. According to their website, it  is “home to the largest and most comprehensive collections of works by Frank Frazetta.” They don’t charge a specific entrance fee, but ask for a suggested donation of $15. 2. Eddie’s Toy Museum – SADLY, PERMANENTLY CLOSED NOW

1 Fenner Ave, Sciota, Pennsylvania 18354 USA

Think you’re the ultimate toy collector? Think again! At Eddie’s Toy Museum, you’ll find the world’s largest toy collection of its kind. With over 18,000 pieces in 42 displays, you’ll find everything from dolls and trucks to Pez dispensers and more! Nascar fans will love checking out the Nascar part of the museum featurign over 8,000 pieces from the Marcis to Earnhardt era,

The museum is closed on Mondays and all major holidays, but the rest of the year is fair game! There doesn’t appear to be a Facebook page or official site, but visit this  Website  to learn more.

3. Columcille Megalith Park

2155 Fox Gap Road, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013 USA

You don’t have to travel to England to find a taste of Celtic spirituality! Just head up to Bangor to the Columcille Megalith Park! I had no idea this place existed, but my husband used to take weather shots for the news from it. The park was inspired by the Isle of Iona, said to be the spot where the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Although it is inspired by the Celtic religion, it’s meant to be a place for people of all faiths to find a little peace and tranquility.

The megalith stones come from a shale pit down the road from the park. They were once trapped in the layers of shale, and geologists say they were in the mud 400 million years ago. The cores are said to be at least a billion years old! The park is open from dawn to dusk every day and is free to enter. Visit the  Website  to learn more.

4. Pocono Cinema & Cultural Center

88 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania 18301-2827 USA

The Pocono Cinema has gone through a few different names, hands, and changes since it first opened way back in 1884. Back then, it was a vaudeville theater and opera house. In 1913, it was converted to a movie theater- the first one in Monroe County to showing “moving pictures.” Throughout the 40s and 50s, it was THE place to be in the Poconos. It closed down in 1986 and stayed closed for ten years.

Over the last 20 years, it’s gone back and forth between a couple of owners, and closed down at least one. Now, it’s been reopened as not just a theater, but a cultural center. The theater shows new releases as well as special runs of older movies. For example, right now you can see Ready Player One, then stick around to see The Death of Stalin. You can also grab a coffee or quick lunch in the cafe before your movie! Visit their new Website  for movie show times and more information.

5. Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium

2021 Status: Closed until further notice due to COVID-19

Add this to the list of things to do in the Poconos that I had no idea existed! I used to live a few blocks from the college and now live about 5 minutes away, yet I had no clue that they had a museum of wildlife. I knew about the planetarium but didn’t know it was open to the public.

Admission is super reasonable, just $6 for adults, and that includes both the museum and the planetarium. The museum exhibits showcase a variety of animals native to the Poconos as well as exhibits with wildlife and insects from around the world. Visit the Website  for more hours because it’s closed during Spring finals and certain events at the college.

6.  Jayne Mansfield’s Grave

Fairview Cemetery, South Main St., Pen Argyl, PA

Jayne Mansfield, the iconic pinup girl (and first woman to have a nude scene in a movie) of the 50s and 60s died tragically on Jun 29, 1967. While some of the rumors surrounding her death proved untrue (she wasn’t actually decapitated), she was horrifically killed in a car accident. Although she has a tombstone in a cemetery in Hollywood, she’s actually buried in Pen Argyl, PA.

I visited her grave many years ago when I was going through my graveyard fascination phase. It’s not hard to find. Go into the west entrance and take the left road. Keep going until you see her heart-shaped tombstone. Really, you can’t miss it.

7. Stroud Mansion

900 Main Street  Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

Stroud Mansion is one of those places that I passed at least a few times a week for decades but never actually visited until recently. When Jake was a Cub Scout, we took the boys on a field trip to the mansion. The historic home was build in 1795 and housed the founding family of the area.

The entire house is a museum dedicated to the history of the area. It’s really neat inside! There are 12 rooms, each meticulously restored to showcase the different eras that the Stroud family lived there through. For example, the dining room is pure Victorian, while the cellar kitchen takes you back to the colonial age. It also has a weapons room and an antique toy room.

I found it a lot more intriguing than I thought I would, although I’ll be honest and tell you that Jake’s interest ebbed and flowed throughout the tour. Visit their  Website  for hours and details.

8. Quiet Valley Farm

2021 Status: Opening as usual for the season in May, social distancing precautions required.

Quiet Valley Farm is one of those places where every child who goes to school in the Poconos will visit at least once! Jake’s elementary school took them practically every year, and I’ve taken him a few times, so he kind of got tired of it.

I highly recommend going when they have one of their major events. In the spring, they have a couple of Farm Animal Frolic events to celebrate the birth of the new animals. During the summer, they have events nearly every weekend. In the fall, I love the Fall Harvest Festival (the pic above is from that event a few years ago).If you can plan your Poconos getaway around that time, you’ll be in for a real treat!

Parking is kind of a nightmare. Not so much because it’s hard to find, but because you have to hike up to the farm either on a small path through the woods or a longer walk up the road. They do have some closer handicapped parking spots. Check out the  Website  for more details.

9. Stonehedge Gardens

51 Dairy Rd, Tamaqua, Pennsylvania 18252 USA

Okay, note that the place is called StoneHEDGE, not Henge! Two totally different things. I thought it was like a little Poconos version of the mystical England stones. If you’re looking for something like that, see #3 on this list!

Even though it’s not quite what I thought it was, Stonehedge Gardens is still a place that thrives to offer a peaceful nurturing environment for all. It features over seven acres of gardens, from perennials to shade gardens to butterfly gardens. The gardens themselves are surrounded by 20 more acres of woods and trails. While I believe there is an admission fee to the gardens, the woods and trails are open to the public and free year-round, from noon to dusk. Check out the Website  for more info.

10. Village Farmer & Bakery

52 Broad St, Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania 18327 USA

We have quite a few farmer’s markets in the Poconos, but most of them seem to be open during the oddest hours. Like, once a month during retrograde from 9 am to noon Alternate Universe Time. Okay, so maybe not that bad, but it seems like whenever I want to go to a farmer’s market, they’re closed!

The Village Farmer & Bakery isn’t exactly a traditional farmer’s market because it’s run by a single family versus hosting a bunch of different farmers, but it’s still a fabulous place to get fresh local fruits and veggies! They also sell a ton of different types of pies (like 30 varieties) and serve breakfast all day as well as lunch.

They’re open from 8 am to 8 pm every day. While the weekend BBQs are neat, I actually suggest going during the week instead. I stopped there on a Saturday and got a little overwhelmed by the line. I don’t do well with long lines, so I left and went back during the week instead. It’s a lot calmer! Check out their Website to see their menu.

11. Callie’s Candy Kitchen

Route 390, Mountainhome, PA 18342

One of my all-time favorite places in the Poconos, Callie’s Candy Kitchen has been around longer than my mom has been alive! The 63-year-old family-run business draws a huge crowd on weekends and around the holidays, but it’s pretty quiet on weekends and off-season.

The Candy Kitchen was started when the Callies were just 19-year-old newlyweds! It originally opened in Bangor in 1952, but moved to its Mountainhome location in 1972. The shop is filled to the brim with pretty much every type of candy you can imagine! It also includes a museum that celebrates the life of Harry and Carol Callie as well as the history of candy making.

If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, head up the road to Callie’s Pretzel Factory instead. I remember when it opened in 1985! They have the best soft pretzels ever, as well as a ton of other salty snacks. The stores are open 10 am to 5 pm every day. 12. The Toy Soldier Museum

Not too far from Callie’s you’ll find the Toy Soldier Museum! Tucked away on eight acres and featuring over 35,000 figures on display, this is the perfect place to appease your inner child! As you wander through the two-story building, you’ll see historically accurate dioramas depicting everything from famous battles throughout history to royal coronations to ancient Egyptian mummification rites! Each display was meticulously hand-built by renowned historian James Hillestad.  Website

13. Holley Ross Pottery

167 Route 191, La Anna, PA 18326

If you’re looking for unique tableware or deeply discounted pottery, you’ll love Holley Ross! They have everything from Fiesta dinnerware to Robinson Ransbottom Pottery stoneware, plus garden decor, gifts, and more, all at fabulous prices. Some of their items are up to 70% off retail prices! They also make their own pottery right on site and offer demonstrations every Tues-Sat at 11am during their main season. The factory showroom is open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 to 5:30, and Sundays from 1-5:30 from May 1st through mid-December, and by chance or appointment the rest of the year.

While you shop, your kids can explore the free on-site woodland park. I was terrified of the swinging bridge as a kid, but the rest of the park is pretty neat! After you finish shopping, enjoy a picnic lunch in the park!  Website

14. Arctic Paws Dog Sled Tours

Want to see what it’s like to ride on a dog sled? You don’t have to go all the way to Alaska, just head to Pocono Manor Resort and Spa! Get up close and personal with beautiful rescued Huskies, ride on the back of the sled, or learn how to mush it yourself!

The Arctic Paws Dog Sled is only open seasonally, so it’s closed during the spring, summer, and fall. They reopen on December 1st. Visit the  Website  for hours and details.

15.  Lakota Wolf Preserve

Okay, so the Lakota Wolf Preserve isn’t quite IN the Poconos, but it’s just a quick drive over the bridge into NJ, so it might as well be part of the Poconos! I’ve never been there but I’m dying to go. We were supposed to go with Jake’s Cub Scout den one year, but I couldn’t get a ride and I don’t drive on the highway.

The Lakota Wolf Preserve is just what it sounds like. It’s a unique chance to see these incredible animals up close and learn about their way of life. You will need to check their  Website  to find out when they’re open for Wolf Tours. That is the only way you can see the animals! They have two tours a day on the weekend. While you don’t need to call ahead, you’ll want to get there about 45 minutes early to register and get ready for the tour. During the week, you’ll need to make an appointment to visit. The fee is $15 for adults and they only take cash or checks.

16. Pocono Snake and Animal Farm

424 Seven Bridge Rd, E. Stroudsburg PA 18301

Even if you don’t like snakes, there’s a lot to see at the Pocono Snake and Animal Farm! I took Jake there a few years ago with some friends and was surprised at how neat it was! This is one of those places that you always see off the side of the road (it’s right along business route 209, near the Dairy Queen) but always forget about when you’re trying to think of things to do in the Poconos.

Kids can bottle-feed little goats, pigs, and deer, or hand-feed silly monkeys. The place has been family-owned for over 30 years now. It’s inexpensive at just $8.50 for adults. Check out their  Website  for times and more info.

17. Boulder Field

Hickory Run State Park

If you love weird geological formations and want to spend the day outdoors, head to Boulder Field in Hickory Run State Park. This National Natural Landmark has been the same for pretty much 20,000 years! It’s a relic leftover from the last ice age. Once your done gazing across the field of flat rocks, spend a little time hiking around the rest of the park! Check the  Website  for details.

18. Pocono Environmental Education Center

The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is a really neat place for nature lovers! My son’s gone there many times with his class for field trips. They have tons of different types of tours every weekend, or you can just hit the hiking trails and explore on your own. With 12 trails to choose from, there’s something for everyone.  Website

19. The Columns Museum

608 Broad Street, Milford, Pennsylvania 18337 USA

Milford is a really neat town full of historical places. The Columns Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Pike County and the surrounding area. Exhibits include Lincoln’s Flag, World War II posters, and more. Admission is $5 for adults. Check the  Website  for times.

A word of advice, though: drive exactly the speed limit through Milford. That town pretty much runs on the money they make pulling people over, and they WILL pull you over if you go over the limit. You’ll notice as you pull into town everyone slows down to 25 right away, and no one goes faster than the posted limit by even a mile or two!

20. Sculpted Ice Works Factory Tour and Natural Ice Harvest Museum (Seasonal)

If you’re visiting during the winter, the Sculpted Ice Works Factory & Museum is really neat! Learn how people got ice before we had freezers and, if you’re lucky, check out an ice sculptor at work! Don’t worry, while the ice is cold, the rooms that you tour aren’t! Check the  Website  for the dates and times that they’re open.

My husband and I just came back from the Frazetta Art Museum. (10/22/2020) The son and daughter-in-law of the artist conducted the tour and then let us explore the art work on our own. They were very informative and seeing the progression of his work was very interesting. WELL WORTH THE TRIP!

Delaware Water Gap

Resting in the most densely populated region in the United States , the Delaware Water Gap is a scenic recreation area corseting a 40-mile stretch of the Delaware River. The area is visited all year to go fishing, hiking, and paddling. A lesser-known fact is the charming atmosphere of the nearby village which shares its name. The town of Delaware Water Gap is the only town with full Appalachian Trail thru-hiker support, but homebodies looking for a more relaxing stay will enjoy live music at the Deer Head Inn. Ride The Pocono Historic Trolley and tour the town and stop by The Village Farmer and Bakery for a piping hot pie!

The town of Hawley rests on the north end of Lake Wallenpaupack, one of Pennsylvania’s largest reservoirs. A pleasing blend of old and new, Hawley combines vine-covered brickwork buildings with modern amenities for cosmopolitan crowds. Bring a fishing rod and camp out all day at the lake or rent a jet ski and carve the surface of the lake for a higher-octane experience. Hire a Pennsylvania Rail Bike and cycle through the reservoir’s natural beauty with a unique on-rails experience. Harmony in the Woods hosts live events like live music and dance programming in an outdoor amphitheater in the great outdoors all summer.

From the bluffs of Irving Cliff overlooking the bustling downtown of Honesdale, one can see the Moosic Mountains to the west and the Lackawaxen River, which parts the town in two. The town is known as the “Birthplace of the American Railroad,” and the Stourbridge Line continues to run today, providing a scenic trip through the mountainside. Eagle watching on the river is not only possible but encouraged in January and February, as is snowshoeing after snowfall. Honesdale’s quaint downtown area is also worth visiting for its brewery, yoga studio, and salt cave, which are all meant to help you relax after a long day of hiking.

As a popular retreat in the 19th century, this southern Poconos town was formerly home to over a dozen millionaires during its heyday, and nowhere is this better seen than in the architecture. Found on the National Register of Historic Places, The Inn at Jim Thorpe is an excellent example of the building frenzy which took place during the opulent Victorian-era. Sit on a diesel-powered train and wind through the mountains or traipse through the greenery in Kemmerer Park and Lehigh Gorge State Park. The town is eminently walkable, and at its center lies the breathtaking Asa Packer Mansion and the museum inside.

The historic town of Milford is the seat of Pike County and is known for its shopping and dining in addition to the natural splendor nearby. The Milford Knob Trail offers a fantastic view of the town at its peak, while the Grey Towers National Historic Site is an American chateau in the French style whose grounds are open for tours. Explore the nearby Delaware River as never before by renting a kayak or canoe before heading back in town for some grub. From crystal shops inside historic mills to cafes established inside refurbished water-powered mills, Milford is never short on personality.

Stroudsburg

The arts scene in Stroudsburg is just one of many reasons to visit this town in the heart of the Pocono Mountains. Walk down Main Street and take in the town’s inviting, offbeat atmosphere. Murals splash across storefronts, and the town’s colonial architecture is waiting to be discovered on a historic walking tour. Catch a show at the Sherman Theater or enjoy live music outside during the town’s many festivals like Stroudfest.

During winter, Winterfest in Downtown Stroudsburg is a major event and not one to miss, especially the Christmas tree lighting ceremony. For more outdoor adventure, visit the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center for 166 acres of forest to hike and ski.

Tannersville

This mountain town at the heart of the Poconos has plenty of activities, sights, and delicious eats for visitors to enjoy. Like many of its neighbors, Tannersville is a premier destination for winter sports. What this town has which others do not is ziplining. Fly suspended in the air between alpine peaks for up to 4,000 feet or talk tight ropes and awe-inspiring peaks with Camelback Mountain Adventures.

Shop for name-brand items at the premium outlets in Tannersville and dine on delicious tandoori chicken inside a repurposed train coach! Lastly, golf enthusiasts will want to check out the nearby golf courses, such as Pocono Manor Golf Course, to play 18 holes right in the Pocono Mountains.

The Plains Township was incorporated in 1851 and has been an enchanting suburb ever since. The Fall Trails in Ricketts Glen State Park is under an hour’s drive from Plains but is completely worth it. Twenty waterfalls and a 7.2-mile trail make this one of the best hikes in Pennsylvania. See Plains and the Poconos by air by hiring a scenic flight ride. Valley Aviation offers helicopters and airplanes for solo rental in addition to aerial tours. Kids of all ages will want to swing by the two retro arcades found in town or the nearby trampoline park.

Lake Harmony

Nestled in the hills of Carbon County, Lake Harmony is a place outdoor enthusiasts are bound to love regardless of season. There are verdant forests, glacier-fed lakes, and rolling hills in Lake Harmony waiting to discover. Rent a fishing rod and cast a line for walleye and yellow perch, or take the Kidder Hike & Bike Trail, which runs between downtown Lake Harmony and Boulder Lake. 10 Colorful Spots to Visit in the Poconos for Fall Foliage

The Poconos region is one of the top outdoor destinations in Pennsylvania, so it should come as no surprise that it’s also a fabulous place to see fall foliage in PA .

Fall colors in the Poconos can be seen throughout the region, typically peaking sometime between the first and third weeks in October, depending on the weather and elevation. So, whenever you visit during this time frame, you should be able to see some incredible Poconos fall foliage.

Having visited the region many times, both during autumn and other seasons, I’ve seen a ton of beauty in this part of northeastern PA. So, I  decided to put together this list of some of the best places to check out fall foliage in the Poconos.

Hickory Run State Park

Of all the places I’ve experienced fall foliage in the Pocono Mountains, I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere more beautiful than Hickory Run State Park .

This incredibly diverse park on the southeastern portion of the region features an incredible natural waterfall ( Hawk Falls ), several dam waterfalls, a scenic lake, and much more. However, for me, the best fall foliage can be found around the Boulder Field , as well as on the forested road leading to and from.

Trust me, that’s a drive you don’t want to miss. (See the photo at the top of this article for proof.)

Raymondskill Falls

Raymondskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in PA , which makes it a great spot to visit any time of the year. However, when I’ve visited in the autumn, I’ve always been incredibly impressed with the beauty of the trees here.

Raymondskill Falls is located in the northern portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and is only a short walk from the parking area, making it an easy spot to visit when exploring the Poconos .

Promised Land State Park

Promised Land State Park is a 3,000-acre park located in Pike County, PA . The park is heavily forested with maple, beech, and hemlock trees providing a nice range of colors throughout the autumn.

There are two lakes in the park that are popular spots for fall foliage in the Poconos, but if you want to explore the woodland here, the Little Falls Trail is a great choice.

This trail follows a beautiful stream with lots of small cascades creating great views, as well as the 10-foot Little Falls at the end of the trail.

Of course, there are 50 miles of trails in the park, so there are a lot of places to explore here.

Irving Cliff

Irving Cliff is an incredible overlook in the town of Honesdale in Wayne County, PA .

Named for author Washington Irving, who is said to have visited this spot, this overlook offers fantastic views over the town and the surrounding forests in Pennsylvania’s northeastern corner.

While I haven’t actually visited this spot during peak fall foliage, having been there for an early autumn sunset, it’s obvious that this spot truly comes alive when the forest is blanketed in autumn colors.

Jim Thorpe is a quaint community that is definitely among the best places to visit in Pennsylvania in the fall.

Nestled in a narrow valley between several mountains, the town is surrounded by incredible fall foliage, which perfectly compliments the many great activities, shops, and restaurants in town.

Take the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad from town or do something spooky this October and check out the Old Jail Museum . Just note that this town gets very busy on October weekends as it is home to one of the most popular fall festivals in PA . Visit on a weekday if you can.

Lake Wallenpaupack

Lake Wallenpaupack is the largest lake in the Poconos and is a great place to explore in the fall, either from land or the water.

Those wanting to explore from the water can put in a boat at one of several launches on the lake. There is also a boat tour that leaves from the northwestern end of the lake that offers cruises for much of the fall foliage season. (Sorry, “Office” fans, it’s not a booze cruise.)

From the land, most of the publicly-accessible spots are also on the northwestern end of the lake including the area around the dam and Shuman Point Natural Area .

Cliff Park Vistas

Cliff Park is located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area just south of Milford, PA.

There are a total of nine miles of trails in this area, including access to a beautiful waterfall. However, during the fall, the most beautiful spots here are the vistas along the Cliff Trail.

The four vistas here each offer fantastic views of the Delaware River Valley and the forested hillsides that surround them. The best of the bunch, though, is Milford Knob, which also offers commanding views over the town below.

Tanners Falls

Tanners Falls is a unique waterfall located a few miles north of Honesdale, PA within state game lands (So make sure to wear some orange if visiting in the fall).

This waterfall features a series of drops below a historic iron bridge, which creates a really unique scene. There are also several foundations remaining from the area’s industrial past, which gave the waterfall its name.

Given this spot is surrounded by towering trees, it’s definitely an incredible spot to see in the autumn.

Lehigh Gorge State Park

Lehigh Gorge State Park follows the Lehigh River through Carbon County with its southern end just north of the aforementioned Jim Thorpe. In fact, if you take the train ride from town, you’ll spend most of your time within the park.

Those looking to really experience fall foliage in the Poconos will definitely want to take some time to explore the park by foot or bicycle on the D&L Rail Trail or put in a kayak or other unpowered watercraft for a float down the river’s rapids.

Indian Ladder Falls

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is home to many incredible waterfalls, some of which I’ve already mentioned. Of these, one of my favorites is Indian Ladder Falls .

Indian Ladder Falls can be accessed from the trails at the Pocono Environmental Educated Center and is relatively easy to reach. What makes this spot so special is the many cascades down the rocks, especially when the leaves above the falls are bright with beautiful fall foliage.

Pocono Palace, Once One of the Favorite Honeymoon Spots in Pennsylvania, To Close Its Doors in May

Pocono Palace in East Stroudsburg , best known for its plastic hot tubs shaped like a champagne glass, will be closing its doors for good on May 2, writes Jason Nark for The Philadelphia Inquirer .

The hotel was once synonymous with newlywed bliss in both the Philadelphia and New York City regions. It was founded by Morris B. Wilkins , who invented the aforementioned hot tubs and the heart-shaped tubs.

In marketing Pocono Palace and his other properties, Cove Haven and Paradise Stream Resorts, Wilkins single-handedly promoted the region as “The Honeymoon Capital of the World.”

A 1971 Philadelphia Inquirer article wrote that “young newlyweds said they loved the beautiful rolling hills, cool fragrant air, serene landscapes, romantic settings, and luxurious or homey accommodations.”

According to Lawrence Squeri , author of Better in the Poconos: The Story of Pennsylvania’s Vacationland , the role of the region in honeymoons evolved after World War II , when couples had money and cars, as well as free time to explore.

“For the first time ever, people could really drive and the Poconos was conveniently located near Philadelphia and New York ,” said Squeri.

Michigan couple Margaret and Corey Bienert have made Pocono Palace their favorite since discovering it in 2018, and are honoring the hotel.

2024 eclipse guide: How and where to watch the April 8 total solar eclipse in Pennsylvania

A total eclipse of the sun will pass through the sky Monday, April 8, treating spectators to an experience that for many comes around once in a lifetime. Spanning 13 states from Texas to Maine, this will be the last solar eclipse in the contiguous United States for the next 20 years.

Northwestern Pennsylvanians have a front-row seat to the eclipse. Hotels have been booking up steadily since last year, and as of mid-March only 97 of the city's 4,500 available rooms remained.

Eclipse viewing near Pittsburgh

Beaver Valley residents can expect to experience 98% obstruction, resulting in a partial solar eclipse . The Beaver County Library System got in on the eclipse fun, hosting Solar Soiree at the B.F. Jones Memorial Library with the Carnegie Science Center's inflatable planetarium. Call the library to register, or for details, at 724-375-2900.

Eclipse viewing in central Pennsylvania including York, Lebanon

Your best bet to view the eclipse in southcentral Pennsylvania is to, well, hit the road. Traveling to Erie, New York or Ohio will provide the best view of the event all in under a six-hour drive.

The last time central Pennsylvania was in the path of totality was in 1478, so waiting for the next eclipse may not be a viable option .

What to expect in the Poconos

The last time a solar eclipse passed through northeastern Pennsylvania was 99 years ago, in 1925 . The region is not in the path of totality for the April 8th astronomical event, but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to watch.

The Grey Towers National Historic Site, in Milford, has plans to open for patrons to view a partial solar eclipse .

Viewing the eclipse in the Philadelphia suburbs

In Bucks County, at the peak of the eclipse the moon will cover 89.5% of the sun. Areas including Cira Green and Fairmount Park will make nice viewing spots.

After years of work, Marshalls Falls Park opens in Smithfield Township

Smithfield Township’s long-awaited Marshalls Falls Park officially opened to the public on Friday, April 12.

The township bought the 15-acre parcel that makes up the bulk of the park in 2008, and another 2-acre property in 2020.

In recent years, the park effort faced challenges from both the pandemic and the potential that grants awarded years back would expire.

Additionally, acquiring the second property was critical, as a necessary permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation could not be given until the private driveway on that parcel was closed.

“We looked at it and we went, ‘Are we losing this park?’” Smithfield Township Manager Julia Heilakka said.

“So it means quite a bit to have this open today,” said Jacob Pride, chairman of the Smithfield Township Board of Supervisors. “Seeing people already coming from the public to come visit this place, just minutes after the ribbon cutting, is awesome and it highlights that people have been waiting for this for a really, really long time.”

A path accessible to all visitors leads from the parking area (274 Marshalls Creek Road, East Stroudsburg) to the bridge near the falls.

The total cost for this first phase of the park was about $1 million, Heilakka said.

A match of “only tens of thousands (of dollars) came from the township,” Pride said, in the form of staff time and consultants who helped secure the grants.

“It’s great to see all the natural features preserved,” Pride said, adding that the park was built with “as minimal impervious surface and other improvements of that nature, to make sure that both everyone can access it, and that it remains substantially similar to its unimproved state.”

Future phases of work at the park are expected to create more trails, parking and passive recreation opportunities, Pride said.

Monroe County Commissioner Sharon Laverdure and state Rep. Tarah Probst were in attendance for the opening, along with Mackenzie Mueller, chief of staff for state Sen. Rosemary Brown.

Pride and Heilakka also noted the support and work of past supervisors; Ron Karasek, township solicitor; former state Sen. Mario Scavello; Christine Dettore, regional advisor for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources; and U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright.
