From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

We walked over the bridge where I got a better photo of the Kremlin to enter metro station to travel the one stop back to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. This cathedral has a fascinating story.  It is Moscow's largest Orthodox cathedral.  It was built between 1839-1883 as a memorial to those who fell fighting Napoleon's army in the War of 1812. 

At its entry, the marble walls are covered with inscribed names of those whose lives were lost.  For more than a century, it was the city's largest single structure, dominating the city skyline.  In 1931, a few seconds demolished what had taken 50 years to build, following Stalin's orders. 

The marble from the church and other valued materials and objects were stripped and removed to be used elsewhere, such as for creating art in the Metro stations.  During Khrushchev's time, one of the world's largest outdoor swimming pools was built. 

In recent years, the decision was made to rebuild the Cathedral; this time it took only 5 years at a cost of $150 million.  While the city provided most of the funding, when the decision to rebuild was announced, the rubles poured in from the general population.  Once again, photos were not allowed, but my friend bought a booklet, and she kindly let me use it so you can see its elaborate interior. 

What you probably DO know about this cathedral is that the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest concert inside the church in 2012, resulting in their arrest and jail time for 3 of its members.

After my friend selected her icon from the gift shop, it was time to bid our favorite Muscovite guide farewell. Our Moscow guide has restored my faith in her generation.  So wise and compassionate she is.  She was extremely perceptive about our preferences and needs. 

As my friend noted to me last night after we got back to our room, there wasn't a problem our guide didn't solve with calm and timely effectiveness.  After she presented both of us with gifts tied with satin ribbon, she walked us across the plaza in front of the cathedral to our waiting cab.  She told my friend that she reminded her of her own "Baba" and that she would send my friend a picture of her to show the resemblance. 

Even with this affection on her part toward my friend, I know our guide would have delivered the same excellent guide service to us, topped with abundant grace and sensitivity.  These characteristics are a part of her inner soul.  Our positive regard of Moscow is because of our guide.

Built on the right bank of the River Seine by the orders of French Queen Catherine de Medici ín 1564 as a garden of the new palace, it has become a public park after the French Revolution.

Today it is one of the favorite spots for the relaxation and strolling of Parisians. Across the river, on its left bank, is located the Musée d’Orsay . Former railway station in Beaux-Arts style today is an art museum holding mainly works of French artists of impressionist and post-impressionist eras.

Works of Cézanne, Renoir, Manet, Monet, Gauguin can be seen here, but also of van Gogh, Hodler, Klimt, Mondrian and so on. It is also the home of Rodin’s Gates of Hell.

Place Vendôme

Some 350 meters from Tuileries Garden is Place Vendôme . First laid out in 1702 as a monument to the armies of King Louis XIV, this square is home of the Vendôme Column which was erected by Napoleon as a commemoration of his victory at Austerlitz.

Place de la Concorde

The Tuileries Garden extends to the Place de la Concorde , the largest public square in Paris which was a place of many notable executions during the French Revolution. King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, Robespierre, Lavoisier, were some of the people who have lost their heads to Madame la Guillotine at this place.

Pont Alexandre III

Avenue des Champs-Élysées is the most famous avenue of the French capital. Stretching almost 2 kilometers from the Concorde is flanked by many upscale and fast fashion retail stores, but also by Jardin des Champs-Élysées on both sides.

On the left side of the street are located the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, past which is the Pont Alexandre III . Widely regarded as the most ornate of 37 bridges that span the Seine through Paris, is named after Russian Tsar Alexander III. Built between 1896 and 1900, this Beaux-Arts style bridge is decorated by numerous Art Nouveau lamps.

Arc de Triomphe

Named after the Elysian Fields, resting place of the dead heroes in Greek mythology, Champs-Élysées is ending Place Charles de Gaulle, former Place de l’Étoile, where the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile is situated.

The Arc de Triomphe , which shouldn’t be confused with Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel located in Tuileries Garden, is honoring those who have died in the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars. Under it is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI.

Eiffel Tower

The most iconic sight and always recognizable part of the Paris skyline is, of course, the Eiffel Tower . Envisioned and erected as the centerpiece and entrance of the 1889 World’s Fair, today is the building after which almost every person in the world recognizes Paris.

Towering above the Champ de Mars, the Eiffel Tower is faced by Jardins du Trocadéro across the Seine. Garden whose main feature is long water basin with twelve fountains which creates 12 meters high water columns and numerous other smaller fountains.

Just a few hundred meters from Champ de Mars is Hôtel Biron, which with the Villa des Brillants at Meudon makes the Musée Rodin . Rodin’s museum collection consists of almost 30 thousand drawings, pictures, sculptures, and other artworks. But the most famous is the very first casting of The Thinker (les Penseur).

Firstly named as The Poet, and representing the central figure of the Gates of Hell, based on Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Jardin du Luxembourg

Some distance to the east is Jardin du Luxembourg , the garden commissioned in 1612 by Queen Marie de’ Medici for the newly constructed Luxembourg Palace. The garden is today owned by the French Senate, which meets in the Palace. Sprawling over 23 hectares of lawns and promenades, it is a home of the Medici Fountain.

Luxembourg Garden is well known from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, as a place where Pontmercy and Cosette meet for the first time.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

Some distance north from Luxembourg Garden is the Île de la Cité, one of the two remaining islands in the Seine. It is the heart of Paris and the place where the city was refounded in the medieval times.

The island is home of the Sainte-Chapelle , a royal chapel from the 13th century built in Gothic style by King Louis IX to house his collection of more than thirty relics of Christ.

Here is also located one of the most recognized symbols of Paris, Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris , a Gothic cathedral which construction began in 1160 and was mostly finished in 1260.

After the fire on 15th April 2019, in which the spire and wooden frame of the lead roof were destroyed, the cathedral is closed for visitors.

Just northeast from Île de la Cité, across the Seine, is Le Marais . This former aristocratic district of Paris which is the location of many historic and representative buildings. After the French Revolution has became location of one of Paris’ main Jewish communities.

Today it is one of the main localities of art galleries, and on its western edge is located the Centre Pompidou. Pompidou is a complex of buildings in the style of high-tech architecture which is home to the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the largest modern art museum in Europe.

It is the second-largest museum of modern and contemporary art and houses more than 100 thousand artworks spanning from the beginnings of modernism in 1905 till the present day.

Some distance to the north is the highest hill in Paris, Montmartre where according to the legend patron saint of France and Paris, Saint Denis was decapitated.

On its summit is located Sacré-Cœur basilica which is often seen as dedicated to honoring 58 thousand French soldiers who lost their lives during the Franco-Prussian war.

But, its construction was intended by French Assemblée Nationale in 1873 to “expiate the crimes of the Commune” committed during the uprising of Communards in 1870 and including the execution of Archbishop of Paris at the summit of Montmartre.

Bret Michaels is bringing the party to Southwest Florida ― just in time for Christmas.

The Poison frontman's Parti-Gras Holiday Tour visits Hertz Arena on Friday, Dec. 13, the Estero venue announced Monday. Tickets go on sale this week.

The tour stop is a continuation of 2023's Parti-Gras Tour and features guest stars Night Ranger and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister . Snider will perform a "mash-up" of Twisted Sister's hits with Michaels' band.

The tour is meant to have a fun, Mardis Gras feel celebrating both Michaels' fans and the music.

“I created Parti-Gras as a sincere and grateful thank you to the fans, friends, and family who have rocked with me over the years," Michaels said in a 2022 news release announcing the tour. "I promise to deliver positive energy, live, raw, real music, and all the bands will deliver sing-a-long hit after hit songs. Your voice will be hoarse after an epic, big, fun stage show.“

Never did the Steves nighttime taxi tour but have read about it and it seems like fun. I suggest to arrange something like it, call G7 taxi on their English speaking line (don't have the number on hand) and tell them what you want to do and that you want to do it on the meter. See what they say.

And be sure to tell them you have 4 passengers!

I didnl't need Rick Steves to tell us that but it is a wonderful way to go. Taxis in Paris are very reasonable and very professional. Certainly less than paying for a tour for 4. Because you are 4, and if you are calling from where you are staying, consider asking for a larger taxi so that everyone has a window. Otherwise someone is cramped in the middle. It may cost a bit more but again worh it.

I think Rick Steves did the tour in a Citroen 2CV rather than a regular taxi.

If you use G7 or Taxi Bleu you can request a mini van taxi.

‘I thought I’d be a taxi driver for a long time’: Gary Wilson’s dream ride to Crucible

The ‘Tyneside Terror’ on his journey from child snooker prodigy to losing his tour card, before returning to the top at the Crucible

G ary Wilson was no longer folding crispy pancakes at the frozen food factory but he was a taxi driver when his long struggle to establish himself as one of the world’s best snooker players seemed an impossible dream. “That was the point where I started thinking: ‘It might never actually happen’,” Wilson says 13 years later. “I knew deep down it should and that, given the right circumstances, I would be good enough. But life doesn’t always work out as you want, does it? I was 25 and I thought I might be a taxi driver for a long time.”

There were times when Wilson was reduced to tears and, as he says, “generally, I’m not very emotional but that’s one area in my life where I’m very passionate. It’s my career and it’s been my dream for such a long time.”

We’re sitting in the deserted North Shields Snooker Centre, on the edge of Newcastle, and Wilson has spent an hour telling me his extraordinary back story as he prepares for the world championships which begin in Sheffield on Saturday. Wilson, 38, is the world No 10 and, having won two tournaments this season, he hopes to match or even better his finest performance at the Crucible. In the 2019 world championships he lost to Judd Trump, the eventual winner, in the semi-finals, and Wilson is a far better player now than he was then.

A child prodigy on the snooker table, Wilson was making century breaks at the age of nine and being interviewed by David Vine on television. But the transition to professionalism, at 18, was brutal. Wilson lost his tour card after his second year, in 2006, at a time when there were only six ranking tournaments.

For the next seven years he worked in a frozen food factory and as a taxi driver while dreaming of finding a way back into pro snooker. Wilson returned to an expanded tour in 2013 and now the “Tyneside Terror” is flourishing as one of the world’s best and most engaging players.

He started playing snooker on a miniature table at the age of four and when he was nine he was banned from some senior club matches because men from rival teams were not willing to lose to him. Wilson was already dreaming of becoming world champion. “Absolutely. My first memory of watching proper snooker was the world championship final with Jimmy White and Stephen Hendry in 1994 , which went to the wire. I was supporting Jimmy, but I respected Stephen more as a hero, because he’d done it all and dominated. I dreamt of what it would be like to win and be Stephen Hendry .”

Last month Hendry had Wilson on as a guest on his podcast and they shared fascinating insights into the yips which have stalked them at different times. It was a sign of how far Wilson has come since the crushing disappointment of losing his tour place.

“It was the second day of the 2006 world championship qualifying, and I had to win that match to stay on tour. It was 8-8 but I lost 10-8 to James Tatton who fluked the frame ball in both the last two frames.

“I was devastated as you couldn’t get straight back on the tour like now. I was 20 and the dream was over, definitely for the short term. I was still living with Mam and Dad and I needed a job. I wanted to play snooker but it was time for some real life.”

His mother worked at the Findus frozen foods factory in Longbenton, just outside Newcastle, and Wilson followed her. “I did the 6am to 2pm shift and so I was up at 5.20am every morning. I’m terrible getting up but my mam would be up at 5am. She’d get me up as she was leaving and I’d be on the road by twenty to six. The good thing was that I’d finish at 2 o’clock and, albeit a little tired, practise snooker in the afternoon.”

What did he do in the factory? “All sorts but, mainly, it was folding crispy pancakes. There were wraps as well. The machines would put the fillings in and I would be folding them and passing them on. It was monotonous work and, deep down, I was thinking: ‘This isn’t what I want to do.’ I’m grown-up enough to know that I need to earn a living but, at the same time, it was devastating. Other players I grew up with were doing OK on tour and I’m in the Findus factory, wrapping frozen food for two years.”

Wilson laughs when I say I bet he’s never eaten a crispy pancake since then. “No. I never ate them when I was there either but we had some laughs and I liked the staff nights out.”

At 23, Wilson changed jobs. “In June 2009 I began working as a taxi driver for a company called Blue Line. I did night work at the start but then I thought: ‘If I’m going to play snooker as well, I’d rather go out at six in the morning and finish at three in the afternoon so I can still practise.’ I could make £100 to £120 a day and I was doing five or six days a week while playing snooker in my spare time. I found a proper structure.”

Wilson liked being a freelance driver but there were the occasional passengers who dodged paying him or were sick in the back of his cab. “There was a bunch of Scottish lads at the barracks and they were coming into the city centre for a drink and they were absolutely hammered getting in the car. I turned to the one in the back on the left nearside and saw this purple stuff come out of his mouth. It was all over the seat and the inside of my door.

“I was like: ‘Right, I’m not being funny. We’re stopping at the cashpoint.’ It was the cashpoint next to St James’s Park, and I say: ‘You’re getting £100 out.’ It was 10 o’clock at night and I was planning on another four hours of work. So there was loss of earnings and, obviously, the cleaning of the car. I escorted him to the cash machine and thankfully, he put his card in and I took my £100.

“I went straight home and my mam got the cleaning stuff out and I tried to get the worst of it off. First thing in the morning I was straight down to get it valeted. I still lost the whole of that day because, even though it had been valeted, the smell lingered. So a hundred quid was not a lot. But I’ve got some fond memories of my taxi days and I did it for five years.”

Barry Hearn’s return to snooker promotion had transformed the tour and, by then, there were 25 tournaments. Wilson was around £10,000 in debt, having to travel and stay at qualifying tournaments, but the increased opportunities meant he had soon paid off the money he owed. “For the first three quarters of my first season back, I was still taxi driving. But I was getting closer and closer to the top 64 [in the world]. At the end of February 2014 I said to Blue Line: ‘I feel I’m doing well enough to go full time with the snooker. But if things don’t go according to plan would my job still be here?’ They said it would but, thankfully, I’ve not had to go back.”

There were still difficult days and Wilson remembers two specific occasions where he threw his cue in the dustbin and swore that he would never play again. “I was trying to qualify for the worlds at Ponds Forge and after I lost I came straight out and the cue got launched in the bin. I wasn’t putting on a show. I left it and walked up the road. But my dad was following and he picked it out of the bin. It happened another time, around 2016.”

Three years later Wilson made the semi-finals of the worlds after beating Luca Brecel, Mark Selby and Ali Carter before losing to Trump 17-11. “I didn’t play as well as I did earlier in the tournament. The table was heavier, drifting off more, and it got to me. With the fragilities of my cue action at the time, it was great when the tables were playing lovely. But when they weren’t as nice, it affected my game. I’m not blaming the conditions, it was more my fault.”

Last year Wilson lost in the second round to Selby who reached the final. But Brecel became the surprising world champion . The Belgian, who had never won a match at five previous world championships, was a rank outsider and he claimed not to have practised and, instead, said he drank heavily most nights during the tournament.

“I can’t believe it was to the extent he portrayed it,” Wilson says of Brecel. “Maybe he had a couple of drinks out every night. If you start having four, five drinks that’s going to affect you. But I do believe he was hardly practising and that he was going out and enjoying himself. I get that to an extent.”

Brecel has had limited success since becoming world champion and Wilson says: “Naturally he’s enjoyed his lifestyle. But maybe he’ll now think: ‘Let’s knuckle down again.’”

Did Brecel’s victory give Wilson and others on the fringe of the elite the belief that they, too, can become world champions? “He showed it can be done. But you don’t necessarily have to play your best game. You just have to play a good, solid game for a couple of weeks. Anyone near the top 16 knows it can be won.”

It took Wilson 18 years to win his first tournament – the 2022 Scottish Open. But this season he has won both the Scottish Open and the Welsh Open and, as he says with a smile on the eve of the world championships, “I’ve been told I might be a dark horse. I know if I play well I’ve got a chance of beating anyone. But it’s about playing well more times than not and that’s what I’m striving to do in every tournament. I want a bit more consistency.”

That pragmatic approach, forged in a frozen food factory and a taxi, has helped Wilson overcome doubts about his unusual cueing technique. The down-to-earth Tyneside Terror also remains, winningly, rooted in real life. “If I put my cue away now, I’ve got some money in the bank but it’s not going to last long. So you’ve got to remember that you’re doing something for a living that you’ve always loved and it’s a privilege to do so. I’ve always remembered where I’ve come from and what I’ve had and not had. I’m still pushing to have more, because you never know when it’s going to run dry.

“It’s a great season if you win a tournament and you stay in the top 16. I’ve won two this season and if I was to carry on like that every year then that’s a great, great career. You can’t guarantee it but, yeah, that’s the dream.”
