Hi, What does that expression mean? I've read it in this context: "I wish we had time to play tourist." ¿Hacer turismo? Thanks!

Yo siempre lo he entendido más bien como Hacer turistadas más bien que hacer turismo. Hacer las cosas típicas que hacen los turistas. Por ejemplo... montar en camello si vas a Marruecos, montarte en un autobús de los de dos pisos de Londres, hacer el tour del segway de Praga...

Enoj2 - I would be careful with this phrase. This is a LOADED phrase! Parece que la persona que habla está siendo muy socarrona. Usually when someone uses the word "play" as in: "I wish we had time to PLAY tourist," they're really saying that "sightseeing is the last thing on earth we have time for right now." But again, it's hard to gauge where the speaker is emotionally without more context; whether he/she is being sarcastic, condescending, or whether he/she feels sad and defeated. I know Solesillo recommended "hacer turistadas," and then you said, "hacer turismo," but that's only 50% of the idea that was conveyed in the original. It's missing that sarcastic flavor. It's more like: ¡No hay tiempo para estar andando por aquí como turistas! Again, without knowing much of the context, this is the best I can offer.

solesillo said: So, the word PLAY adds the sarcastic tone? Click to expand...
solesillo said: Then how do you say it in a positive connotation? (if you truly want to say that you want to do things tourists usually do). Or, in other words, could that phrase be used to express that idea? Click to expand...

So, the word PLAY adds the sarcastic tone? Not invariably, no. It all depends on context. Then how do you say it in a positive connotation? (if you truly want to say that you want to do things tourists usually do). Very easily. Just sound genuinely excited when you say it. Obviously, there are other expressions that are clearer and more common.

I agree with onbalance. "I wish we had time to play tourist" makes me think that they wish they could do touristy things, but maybe don't have the time. With the proper tone, anything can be made to actually mean something else. Un saludo
