Crown Princess Mary cycles through the Sydney CBD in first official visit to Australia in 10 years
By Kahla Preston | 1 year ago
Princess Mary is back on Aussie soil – and she's had a first-hand taste of the Sydney commuter experience.
The Crown Princess of Denmark, 51, arrived in the city late on Thursday night, marking her first official visit to Australia in a decade.
The Tasmanian-born royal is in Sydney for a business meeting, leading a Danish delegation on talks about sustainability and Australia's "green transition".

First stop on the itinerary, however, was a ride through the CBD's cycleways, beginning in Hyde Park.
Mary and her delegation, including Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, Dan Jorgensen, toured the cycleways in a 2km ride led by City of Sydney staff.
The royal has gone for a business-casual look, teaming wide-leg green pants with a white shirt, black blazer and sneakers.
After their ride, the group met with the city's Lord Mayor Clover Moore, who accompanied them on a light rail trip from Customs House Forecourt to Town Hall.
"We're excited to host the Danish delegation and show off some of the infrastructure they have helped inspire," Moore said in a statement ahead of the visit.

"The George Street light rail has transformed not just how we get around the city, but how we experience it, and having a better connected network of cycleways is great for our city because it gives people another safe transport option that is good for health and good for the environment."
Mary has spent her week in Vanuatu and Fiji , the visit focused on the consequences of climate change to island communities.
Her last official royal engagement in Australia took place in 2013.
However, Denmark's future queen has returned since for personal visits, including spending Christmas Down Under with her family in 2022 .
During that trip, Mary, her husband Crown Prince Frederik and their four children spent some time in Sydney before heading to Hobart for Christmas.
Sydney is a special place for the Crown Prince couple, who met there – in a bar, The Slip Inn, to be precise – during the 2000 Olympics.
Next week, Mary and Frederik will attend the coronation of King Charles III in London.

Princess Mary is officially in Australia!
Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark , is officially back in Australia.
As confirmed by the Danish palace to Billed Bladet , Mary travelled Down Under with her youngest children – twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, age 12 – on December 6 and plans to visit family while here.
The palace also confirmed that Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark , will join his wife in Australia once he’s finished his royal commitments for the year – Frederik is currently at the climate conference, COP 28, in Dubai and will then participate in the Council of State with his mother, Queen Margrethe, on December 12.
Mary and Frederik’s daughter Princess Isabella will also travel to Australia later in December once she’s done with school for the year, but Prince Christian , Mary and Frederik’s eldest child, will not as he’s in his final year of school and needs to study for his upcoming exams.
It’s not yet known whether Mary and the rest of the Crown Prince Family will undertake any formal royal engagements while in Australia or whether the trip is purely a vacation.
It’s likely the latter; we’re guessing the Danish royals will simply spend time with Mary’s family – her father, Professor John Dalgleish Donaldson, and three siblings, Jane, Patricia and John – before heading back to Aarhus in Denmark to celebrate Christmas Eve at Marselisborg Palace with the Queen.
The last time Mary visited her homeland was in April of this year. The Crown Princess attended a business meeting in Sydney and led a Danish delegation on talks about Australia’s ‘green transition’ and sustainability.

Princess Mary to return to Australia for the first time in five years
Princess Mary has revealed a return to Australia after a five-year absence. And the timing couldn’t be better.

The prodigal daughter returns.
Princess Mary will be setting foot on Australian shores for the first time in five years this holiday season, the Danish royal household confirmed.
Mary and her family, including Crown Prince Frederick and their children Christian, 17, Isabella, 15 and twins Vincent and Josephine, 11, will spend Christmas with the native Tasmanian’s Australian family.
The visit will be a private affair. It’s been almost 10 years since Mary was last in Australia in an official capacity.
A statement from the royal household said, “In December, the Crown Prince’s family will travel on a private Christmas holiday in Australia to celebrate the holiday with HRH the Crown Princess’s family.
“It has been five years since the Crown Prince coupled together with their four children last visited the Crown Princess’s homeland.”

The trip could be a nice break for the family, away from the drama which this year has engulfed the Danish royals.
Mary had been dragged into an escalating row after Denmark’s Queen Margrethe stripped some of her grandchildren of their royal titles.
Margrethe, 82, announced in September Prince Joachim’s children Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10, would be stripped of their royal titles.
Her slimming down of the Danish monarchy would instead make them counts and countesses.
Princess Mary’s children with Crown Prince Frederik will keep their titles, as Frederik is next in line to the throne.
Joachim and his second wife Marie have now come forward to say their relationship with Frederik and Mary is “complicated”.
In an interview with B.T., they also revealed that Margrethe has “unfortunately not” spoken to them since the bombshell move.
“It’s also family. Or whatever we want to call it,” Joachim added.
Marie has also revealed that Athena has been bullied at school since she lost her title.
“They come and say (to Athena): ‘Is it you who is no longer a princess?’,” she said.
The family are only said to have been told of the decision five days before it was made public.
Mary recently defended Margrethe’s “difficult” decision to strip her grandchildren of their royal titles in an interview with Ekstra Bladet.
“Change can be extremely difficult and can really hurt,” Princess Mary said.
“I think most people have tried it. But this does not mean that the decision is not the right one.
“ … And I can understand that it is a very difficult decision to have to make, and also a very difficult decision to receive.”
As direct descendants of the future King, Frederick and Mary’s four children are unaffected by the decision.
However, Mary suggested that may not always be the case.
“We will also look at our children’s titles when the time comes. Today we cannot see what the royal house will look like when it is Christian’s time, or when Christian’s time begins to approach,” she said.
Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Margrethe is now Europe’s longest-serving monarch. She has been on the throne since January 1972.
Nearly three months after revealing his cancer diagnosis and retreating from the spotlight, the monarch has shared a huge update.
King Charles’ funeral plans are being updated according to a royal source who divulged secret details about the sombre event.
The couple put on a united front in their first official gala portraits as King and Queen, after shaking off speculation about their marriage.

Princess Mary's children mock her Aussie accent
Australian-born Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is making a whirlwind trip back to her home country for her first official engagement in 10 years.
The Danish royal family has released a statement on its official Instagram account confirming that Mary will visit Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji from April 23 to 28.
WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Princess Mary’s kids mock her Aussie accent.
The visit is to “highlight the consequences of climate change in the Pacific region”, the English translation of the statement reads.
Princess Mary will spend time in Sydney on April 28, where she will participate in an event with Danish business representatives involved in “the green transition in Australia”.
She will also visit a number of projects related to construction and transport.
“Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess will visit ... Vanuatu and Fiji as well as Australia with Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen on the 23rd-28 April 2023,” the statement began.
First, Princess Mary will visit Vanuatu on April 23 and 24, going on field visits to crisis responses areas in the wake of recent cyclones and earthquakes.
There, she will “have the opportunity to meet with players who are managing reconstruction projects in the wake of natural disasters”.
Next, the princess will visit Fiji from April 25 to 27.
“Here, the Crown Princess will focus, among other things, on how destruction and evacuations in the wake of climate change cause increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence, and how the health system is working to protect women and girls in vulnerable situations,” the statement continued.
Mary’s final stop will be Sydney on April 28.
Although this is her first visit to Australia in an official capacity in many years, Mary, her husband Crown Prince Frederik and their four children were in the country for Christmas 2022.
She has also visited Australia on personal trips in 2017 and 2015.
On this whirlwind trip, Princess Mary will not have time to visit her family in Tasmania, as she will be heading for London to attend the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

Prior to that, Mary visited her homeland in 2017, and was papped at a number of Sydney’s beaches and yachting around Sydney harbour.
In her 2015 visit, the family were seen extensively across Western Australia visiting a number of tourist favourites including the Margaret River Chocolate Company in Swan Valley.

SYDNEY (AP) — For the first time, Australians find themselves on the brink of witnessing one of their own, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, rise to the rank of queen when her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, is proclaimed king of that European nation Sunday.
He will become King Frederik X of Denmark two weeks after his 83-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe II, announced she would be the first Danish royal to abdicate in some 900 years .
The 51-year-old Crown Princess Mary’s unlikely journey from Tasmania to European royalty as the world’s first Australian-born queen has captivated Danes and Australians alike for over two decades.
The then Mary Donaldson was 28 years old and working as a real estate agent when her chance meeting with the Danish prince occurred at a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympics. He was at the Games to support Denmark’s sailing team.
The announcement of their engagement in 2003 marked the beginning of what is considered in Australia a fairytale romance, and her succession to the title of queen consort has many Australians brimming with excitement and anticipation.
Though this is a country that purports to be classless and egalitarian, Australians are reflecting national pride as a fellow Australian transcends geographical, social and cultural boundaries to assume a position of global prominence, even if it has been attained through marrying well.
Princess Mary’s ascension potentially also promotes discussion about Australia’s evolving identity at a time when many Australians, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese , would prefer that the country cut ties with the British monarchy and become a republic with its own head of state.
More tangibly, Princess Mary has played a significant role in connecting Australia with Denmark. For over 20 years, Australians have watched her seamlessly integrate Danish traditions and language into her life while maintaining a strong connection to her Australian roots and visiting her homeland often.
Her commitment to philanthropy, advocating for health, women’s rights and children’s well-being, has further endeared her to Australians.
In Copenhagen, Thomas Larsen, a royal expert compared Mary with the late British Princess Diana.
“I think she has a big heart when it comes to people who are isolated, who are lonely. She wants to reach out to people who need help,” Larsen told The Associated Press.
And in the early hours of Monday morning Australian time, the modern-day fairytale will reach a new high point when Crown Princess Mary becomes the first Australian to become a queen.
____ Associated Press journalist Anders Garde Kongshaug in Copenhagen, Denmark, contributed to this report.

Princess Mary returns to Australia for Christmas without Prince Frederik following allegations he cheated with Mexican socialite
Princess Mary has travelled to Australia for Christmas without her husband of nearly two decades Prince Frederik following an “affair” scandal which rocked the Danish royal family.
Princess Mary has returned to Australia without her husband Prince Frederik after he was after he was accused of cheating with a Mexican socialite.
A Danish Royal House spokesperson confirmed to Billed Bladet magazine the Tasmanian-born royal was heading back to Australia to visit her family for Christmas.
The Crown Princess of Denmark, 51, is reportedly accompanied by her two youngest children twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
On Monday the Danish Royal Family shared a clip of the married couple of 19-years putting on a united front, decorating the Christmas tree with their four children - Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and the 12-year-old twins.
In the video, Christian is seen on a ladder as Mary hands him decorations to put on top of the tree, before Frederik gets up to do the same.
Rumours began swirling of Frederik's alleged affair in early November, when Lecturas Magazine published photos purporting to show the future King on a date with Genoveva Casanova.
The pair were snapped together in Madrid attending a Pablo Picasso exhibition and later walking in the Spanish capital after reportedly sharing an intimate dinner.
A week later the Spanish magazine published more photos of Frederik it claims capture him leaving the reality TV star’s apartment, the morning after their alleged dinner date.
Frederik is seen in the snaps walking towards a car, which Lecturas alleges was a Danish embassy vehicle which had picked him up from outside the Mexican woman’s apartment and dropped him at the airport.
The former daughter-in-law of the billionaire Duchess of Alba has told Hola! she “categorically” denies the “malicious” rumours the pair have ever had a romantic relationship.
"Any such statement is not only completely untrue but misrepresents the facts in a malicious manner,” Casanova said.
“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take the necessary steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy."
Princess Mary and Prince Fredrik are yet to comment on the allegations.

Crown Princess Mary travels abroad without Crown Prince Frederik
The royal was born in hobart, tasmania.
Crown Princess Mary has travelled to Australia ahead of the festive season, according to Danish media.
The Hobart-born royal, 51, has been joined by her youngest children, 12-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
Danish magazine Billed Bladet reports that the royal household's Lene Balleby confirmed Mary's travel plans to visit family and that she will later be joined by her husband, Crown Prince Frederik , and their 16-year-old daughter, Princess Isabella.
The couple's eldest child, Prince Christian , who turned 18 in October, will remain in Denmark for education purposes.
Future king Christian is in the final year of his upper secondary education at Ordrup Gymnasium.
DON'T MISS
Mary is the youngest of four children born to Scottish parents – John Donaldson and Henrietta, who sadly died in 1997.
She has two older sisters, Jane and Patricia, and an older brother, John. Her father remarried in 2001 to English novelist Susan Moody.
Mary met Danish Prince Frederik at the Slip Inn pub during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
But Mary, who worked in advertising at the time, was completely unaware that the man she was talking to was a member of the Danish royal family.
"The first time we met we shook hands. I didn't know he was the prince of Denmark. Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, 'Do you know who these people are'?" she revealed in a 2005 interview about meeting Frederik.
In October 2003, the couple's engagement was announced by the palace.
Mary and Frederik married on 14 May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, with the royal bride wearing a boatneck style gown designed by Danish fashion designer Uffe Frank.
The bride's bouquet included a nod to her home country with Australian eucalyptus.

Mary was also gifted a diamond tiara from her in-laws, Queen Margrethe and the late Prince Henrik.
The royals are set to celebrate Christmas in Denmark, spending the holidays at Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus with Queen Margrethe.
They will also be joined by Frederik's youngest brother, Prince Joachim and his wife, Princess Marie , and their two children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, who will all fly over from Washington DC in the US, where they are currently based.
Joachim's eldest son, Count Felix , will join the family on Christmas Day, but Count Nikolai will be spending Christmas abroad as he is currently studying in Sydney, Australia.
The Danish palace shared a very festive video of Crown Princess Mary, Crown Prince Frederik and their children decorating the Christmas tree at their home, Amalienborg Palace.
