Next Step: Tell us who is travelling so we can give you an accurate quote.

Who do you want to get a quote for?

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance covers you, your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote will calculate the coverage you already have on your card—saving you money!

Why we ask: Since your credit card’s travel insurance does not cover travellers other than you (the cardholder), your spouse and/or your dependent children, your quote for these travellers will not factor in your credit card coverage.

Tip: You will need to get a quote and buy travel insurance for other eligible travellers separately so that we can give you an accurate quote for everyone.

Travel insurance helps you get your money back when things go wrong with your trip. And it remains a debate: Do you really need it, and is it worth it?

Personally, I’ve often skipped travel insurance, preferring to put the extra money toward my trip. Yet as I pulled into the airport after a winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in my SUV rental, a snowplow kicked up a rock and a crack extended across the windshield. And just like that, I got in the dreaded rental car accident .

Thankfully, I had rented my car with my Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , which covered rental car windshield reimbursement. Note that I had also specifically opted out of the car rental's insurance coverage offered at the counter, which is a requirement in order to allow my credit card coverage to kick in. Terms apply.

A number of credit cards provide various types of travel insurance (including trip cancellation, trip interruption and car rental loss and damage insurance) when you use your card to pay for flights, rental cars and other travel expenses. So do you need additional travel insurance? Maybe not.

What does your travel insurance cover?

First, let’s look at the different types of coverage that your credit card may offer to help protect your trip, from your bags to your rental car to your health.

Baggage delay . If your luggage doesn’t arrive when you do, you may receive a reimbursement to offset the costs of having to purchase new attire and other items you may need. The length of delay required and the coverage offered varies by card.

Lost/damaged baggage . If your bags are lost or damaged by a carrier, or items have been stolen from your baggage, your provider may provide monetary compensation.

Trip delay . If your trip on a common carrier is delayed, you may receive monetary compensation to help cover meals, hotels, transportation and necessary purchases up to a certain amount per ticket.

Trip cancellation . If you need to cancel a prepaid, nonrefundable trip, you may receive compensation to offset the lost funds. This benefit generally applies to cancellations for covered reasons, which vary by card.

Trip interruption . If you miss a portion of your trip due to a covered reason, this benefit will reimburse you for any unused, prepaid, nonrefundable reservations (i.e., excursions, hotel nights).

Medical treatment . If you are hurt while traveling and require medical treatment, medical expenses may be covered up to a certain dollar amount.

Medical evacuation . If your illness or injury requires you to return home immediately for care, the insurance coverage through your card may cover the costs.

Travel accident insurance. In the case of accidental death or dismemberment, your credit card may provide coverage to you or to your beneficiary

Rental car insurance. This coverage provides protection to your rental car against theft and damage. Coverage may be primary or secondary to your personal auto insurance, depending on the card.

Do I need additional travel insurance?

Even with the coverage listed above, some credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide enough insurance for your needs. For example, if you have paid $10,000 for a vacation using your card and trip cancellation is not offered, you may want to purchase additional coverage. Likewise, if you book a very expensive trip but your card only covers $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage, you may want to consider additional coverage.

American Express offers full travel insurance options through AmEx Assurance . This specific benefit is available to all travelers and does not require an American Express card. You can pick and choose the coverage you want, and a quote will be processed based on your age, trip expense and days traveling.

For example, here's what we found when requesting insurance for a two-day trip that costs $1,000. You can decide what coverage you'd like and see the full cost of your options:

The quote we received covered 100% reimbursement for cancellation, then offered different levels for other types of coverage.

Medical protection was available for $25,000 to $100,000.

Travel accident protection was available for $250,000 to $1,500,000.

Baggage protection was available for up to $500 to $2,500.

Trip delay coverage was offered for $150 to $1,000 per day, depending on selecting basic, silver, gold or premium options.

When renting a car, be sure to check the specific requirements of your credit card, which may vary by location and type of vehicle.

So do you need travel insurance? A good rule of thumb is if the amount you could lose is more than you want to lose (or can afford to lose) if something goes wrong, get the insurance. Canada’s 7 Best RBC Credit Cards

RBC is one of Canada’s leading Big 5 banks, offering a variety of travel and cash back credit cards.

Here are our picks for the best RBC credit cards in Canada.

Best RBC Credit Cards

Best overall rbc credit card.

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 35,000 RBC Avion points † when you get approved for the card
  • Plus, earn  20,000 RBC Avion points † upon spending $5,000 in the first six months
  • Earn 1.25x RBC Avion points †  on qualifying travel purchases
  • Transfer RBC Avion points to British Airways Executive Club and other frequent flyer programs for premium flights †
  • Redeem Avion points for flights with the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule †
  • Minimum income: $60,000 personal or $100,000 household
  • Annual fee: $120 †

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite is RBC’s core travel credit card. You’ll earn 1.25 Avion points per dollar spent on travel, and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

Avion points are one of the few transferable rewards currencies in Canada, making them very valuable. There are some good sweet spots with any of their transfer partners, including British Airways Avios , Cathay Pacific Asia Miles , and American Airlines AAdvantage. It’s often best to wait for a transfer bonus, which could net you 10–50% more points depending on the partner program.

For straightforward round-trip flights in economy class, you can also score great value with the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. You can redeem your rewards for up to 2 cents per point for most destinations. If you book this way through the RBC Rewards centre, you can also use your points to cover taxes and fuel surcharges.

As an added bonus, RBC has special promotions for Avion cardholders. Check the offers on your account from time to time, and you can earn discounts or additional Avion points for using your card to make purchases at merchants like Best Buy, Indigo, Apple, Rexall, or HelloFresh. There’s also an ongoing benefit of discounts and extra points at Petro-Canada.

The card also has some unique insurance benefits, like a high amount of hotel burglary coverage and mobile device insurance. A mid-tier card with a manageable annual fee, the RBC Avion card is always useful to have in your wallet for those types of purchases and bookings.

If you don’t qualify with at least $60,000 annual personal income or $100,000 annual household income, you can apply for the RBC Avion Visa Platinum. You’ll get all of the same earning and redemption opportunities (except for bonus points earned on travel purchases) and the same annual fee, just with no minimum income requirement.

Best Premium RBC Credit Card

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 35,000 RBC Avion points† when you get approved for the card†
  • Then, earn 20,000 RBC Avion points†  upon spending $5,000 in the first six months †
  • Plus, earn 1.25x RBC Avion points † on all qualifying purchases
  • Use your rewards for any business class flight with no restrictions on dates, seats, or airlines †
  • Transfer points to one of four airline partners †
  • DragonPass membership with six free lounge visits per year †
  • Minimum income: $200,000 personal or household†
  • Annual fee: $399 †

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege is RBC’s top-tier card. It’s a step up from their other cards, earning 1.25 Avion points per dollar spent on all purchases.

As for travel benefits, you’ll get a better insurance package, as well as a complimentary DragonPass membership with six annual free lounge visits, as is standard on all Visa Infinite Privilege cards.

But perhaps the most intriguing advantage of this card is that you can redeem your Avion rewards at a rate of 2 cents per point for any business class flight. If you can find some cheap cash fares, you can score some flights this way for even better value than you might find with frequent flyer programs.

Best RBC Mastercard

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 250 WestJet dollars upon making your first purchase†
  • Plus, earn 200 WestJet dollars upon spending $5,000 in the first three months†
  • Plus, receive an annual companion voucher for discounted travel on WestJet flights, with a co-pay starting at $119 plus taxes and fees†
  • Minimum income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household
  • Annual fee: $119

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is RBC’s go-to travel-oriented Mastercard.

You’ll earn 1.5 WestJet Dollars per 100 dollars spent, good for 1.5% back. You can use your rewards to cover payments for WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations.

The card’s best feature is its annual companion voucher. Every year, including your first year with the card, you can book a second round-trip ticket with a reduced base fare when you pay full price for your own seat. You’d still have to pay $119 to $399 plus taxes and fees, depending on the destination, but these rates can represent steep discounts if you travel in high season.

Best RBC Credit Card for Daily Spending

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 3,500 Avion Premium points upon approval †
  • Plus, earn  3,500 Avion Premium points  upon spending $500 in your first three months†
  • Earn 3x points † on qualifying grocery, dining, food delivery, gas, rideshare, daily public transit, electric vehicle charging, streaming, digital gaming and digital subscriptions†
  • Mobile device insurance †
  • Monthly fee: $4 †

The RBC ION+ Visa is an intriguing option for spenders who want to earn enticing travel rewards while keeping credit card fees down.

The card has a monthly fee of just $4, while earning a hefty 3 points per dollar spent on a wide range of lifestyle categories, including groceries, dining, commuting, and entertainment subscriptions.

As an ION+ cardholder, you’ll earn points at the Avion Premium tier. Aside from WestJet, you can’t transfer these points to airline partners or use the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. As an ION+ cardholder, you’ll miss out on the very best ways to stretch your value with the trio of Oneworld airline programs of British Airways Avios, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, and American Airlines AAdvantage.

Luckily, you can easily upgrade the card to an Avion card. This moves your cardholder status to Avion Elite, which lets you transfer Avion Rewards points to frequent flyer programs.

If you have an RBC ION+ Visa and an Avion Visa, you can transfer your Avion Premium points into Avion Elite points. This is an ideal setup, as you can earn at elevated rates with the RBC ION+ Visa, while redeeming in the most valuable ways as Avion Elite points.

Best No Fee RBC Credit Card

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 1.5x Avion Premium points † on qualifying grocery, gas, rideshare, daily public transit, electric vehicle charging, streaming, digital gaming and digital subscriptions†
  • Annual fee: $0

The RBC ION Visa is the best entry-level card offered by RBC. You can earn 1.5 points per dollar spent on groceries, dining, and other lifestyle categories, and 1 point per dollar spent everywhere else.

You can redeem your Avion Rewards points for gift cards at a rate of 1 cent per point, although with frequent discounts of 30%, you can often get a rate of 1.43 cents per point. If you wait for these promotions, you can significantly increase your returns on daily spending, which you can’t do on most no-fee cards.

Otherwise, like with the ION+ card, you can upgrade the ION card to an Avion card to take advantage of exclusive airline transfer partners available to Avion Elite cardholders, or hold both and transfer your Avion Premium points into Avion Elite points.

If you can’t qualify for a higher-tier card initially, the ION card is a great starting point as you begin making plans for future travel with the three Oneworld programs.

Best Cash Back RBC Credit Card

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 2% cash back † on groceries, up to $6,000 spent
  • Plus, earn 1% cash back † on grocery and non-grocery purchases above $6,000
  • 0.5% cash back † on non-grocery purchases up to $6,000

The RBC Cash Back Mastercard has an interesting rewards structure. Your earn rates will vary depending on how much you spend in different categories.

You’ll earn 2% cash back on your first $6,000 of grocery purchases each year; then your rewards rate drops to 1%. You’ll also earn 0.5% on your first $6,000 of other purchases each year; then your rewards rate increases to 1%.

If most of your spending is on groceries, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a no-fee card that earns more than 2%. And if you exceed $500 per month on average, at that level you’re probably better off swallowing a modest fee for bigger rewards.

If you’re a high-volume spender in other categories and you’ll easily reach the 1% rate, that’s a great return for an entry-level cash back card that doesn’t face the same acceptance issues as American Express cards.

Best RBC Credit Card for Business Owners

rbc travel insurance credit card

  • Earn 35,000 RBC Avion points when you get approved for the card
  • Plus, earn 1.25x RBC Avion points on all purchases
  • Use your rewards for any business class or First Class flight with no restrictions on dates, seats, or airlines
  • Transfer points to one of four airline partners
  • Qualify for the card with a registered business
  • Annual fee: $175 (rebated in the first year)

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business is the go-to choice for business owners looking to rack up points for business travel.

You can transfer your Avion points to RBC’s Oneworld airline partners, use the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule for economy flights, or credit your points against any business class flight at a rate of 2 cents per point.

The card earns 1.25 Avion points per dollar spent on your first $75,000 in purchases per year, or 1 point thereafter. It also comes with a solid suite of travel insurance coverage.

You can have these unique high-value perks like extra Avion points on spending and 2 cents per point redemptions for premium class tickets, all for an annual fee of just $175.

Compared to the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege and its $399 annual fee for those same benefits, you should definitely see if you have an opportunity to get this business credit card instead.

RBC Credit Cards: What You Need to Know

When choosing an RBC credit card, you should familiarize yourself with what benefits a RBC credit card can offer, what features to look out for, and how RBC credit cards can fit into an optimized overall credit card strategy.

Why get an RBC credit card?

Overall, RBC’s credit cards have modest welcome bonuses and everyday earn rates. Instead, the biggest appeal is their unique airline partners.

RBC Avion points are transferable to frequent flyer programs with three airlines ( British Airways , Cathay Pacific , and American Airlines ) that are members of the Oneworld alliance. You can then book partner award space from these loyalty programs. RBC also has co-branded credit cards for British Airways and Cathay Pacific .

This gives you some new options for travel, as other Canadian banks put more of an emphasis on Air Canada’s Aeroplan program and its Star Alliance partners. Also, RBC is the only Big 5 Canadian bank with a transferable points currency, offering both flexibility and the potential for very high value redemptions.

Additionally, RBC opens the door to the SkyTeam alliance. Although WestJet isn’t a member, they have codeshare agreements with several SkyTeam airlines like Delta, Air France, and KLM, and you can use WestJet dollars on those routes. Whether with the co-branded WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard or by transferring RBC Avion points, there are quite a few ways to earn WestJet Dollars from RBC.

As the cherry on top, RBC runs promotions where you can get a 10–50% bonus for transferring points to airlines or redeeming them for gift cards. Other banks don’t do this as often, if at all, and it’s rare to be able to exchange points for gift cards at a similar value as travel redemptions.

Finally, if you bank with RBC, you can get a MultiProduct Rebate if you have an RBC credit card. Since it reduces your monthly banking fees, there’s no reason not to have a card, even if it’s just a basic one with no annual fee.

What should you look for in an RBC credit card?

RBC has a mix of cards for different purposes:

  • RBC’s Mastercards include their WestJet co-branded cards and cash back cards
  • RBC’s Visa cards make up the rest of their travel products, including the full Avion Rewards line as well as co-branded cards with British Airways and Cathay Pacific

RBC’s primary travel rewards program is officially known as Avion Rewards. As a cardholder of any credit card that earns Avion points, you’re an Avion Premium member, meaning you can redeem points for travel bookings, merchandise, gift cards, or WestJet Dollars. Travel redemptions booked through Avion Rewards can be made for 1 cent per point.

Meanwhile, Avion-branded credit cards are a subset of Avion Rewards. These cardholders are considered Avion Elite members with additional premium travel redemption options:

  • All Avion cardholders can use the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, a region-based chart with fixed points prices for round-trip travel between Canada and each zone. You can book any seat on any flight, up to a maximum cash fare. If you’re able to maximize the chart’s sweet spots, you should expect to be able to redeem your rewards for around 2 cents per point.
  • All Avion cardholders can transfer points to British Airways Avios, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, or American Airlines AAdvantage.
  • Visa Infinite Privilege and Visa Infinite Business cardholders can also use points for business class and First Class flights, at a fixed rate of 2 cents per point, with no limit per booking. This can be a very lucrative upgrade from the regular rewards rate of 1 cent per point for all travel bookings.

Aside from transferring your Avion points, you can earn airline miles directly on a British Airways or Cathay Pacific co-branded card, if you’d prefer. These cards have features like an annual companion fare or an anniversary bonus for second-year cardholders.

All of RBC’s cards come with the standard benefits for their card tier:

  • All Visa Infinite cards have access to Concierge services, the Luxury Hotel Collection, and the Dining Series & Wine Country program
  • In addition, Visa Infinite Privilege cards come with a DragonPass membership which includes six annual visits to participating airport lounges and restaurants each year
  • All World Elite Mastercards come with a DragonPass membership (although no free passes from RBC) and in-flight Boingo Wi-Fi

RBC frequently offers First Year Free promotions or larger welcome bonuses for new signups for their Avion Visa Infinite and WestJet World Elite cards. It’s generally best to wait for one of these opportunities before applying.

If your personal or household income isn’t high enough to qualify, see if you’re eligible for a lower-income variant of the same card.

Often RBC will have the same offer for both cards, or downgrade your application for the premium product if necessary, so you can still earn many of the same perks and welcome bonuses.

What’s the optimal strategy for RBC credit cards?

RBC offers the most powerful rewards and travel benefits among the Big 5 Canadian banks, and is second only to American Express credit cards among all Canadian issuers.

If you’re a dedicated traveller who wants to see as much of the world as possible by maximizing your credit cards, RBC credit cards should have a significant presence in your wallet.

For international travellers, by transferring Avion points to one of the Oneworld airline partners (often with a 10–50% transfer bonus) or by earning miles directly with the British Airways or Cathay Pacific co-branded cards, you can redeem miles for long-haul international flights for a much higher value than by redeeming Avion points for flights directly.

For domestic travellers, booking flights through the Air Travel Redemption Schedule and collecting WestJet Dollars can help you cover a fair chunk of your domestic flights, too.

While the individual welcome bonuses on each RBC credit card might not be world-beating, there are quite a few different RBC credit cards you can apply for, and you can stack all of these welcome bonuses into a concentrated points balance in either Avion or one of the partner programs (Avios, Asia Miles, or WestJet).

RBC is also known to grant the welcome bonus upon switching your card from one product to a new one, allowing you to pick up new welcome bonuses while preserving the same account (and all of its history) on your credit file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some questions we frequently hear from readers about the best RBC credit cards in Canada.

Can I have more than one RBC credit card at the same time?

Yes, but you can typically only be approved for one card every 90 days. If you apply sooner, you’ll almost certainly be automatically rejected, and the 90-day waiting period will reset.

Which credit bureau does RBC check?

RBC always checks TransUnion.

Can I do a product switch with RBC?

Yes, and you can often get the same welcome bonus upon switching to a credit card as when submitting a new application, unless it’s an elevated offer that’s specific to new applicants only.

Can I get RBC business cards?

Yes, you can easily apply as a sole proprietor doing business as your own name. However, expect RBC to ask for business registration documents .

I’ve got the RBC Avion Visa Infinite and RBC Westjet World Elite card. For an upcoming travel booking is it better to transfer my avoin points to Westjet cash to pay for the booking or pay the remaining balance on the Avion card and apply the points to the balance?

Does a product switch count as an application and I have to wait 90 days after that? Also I heard rumour that you can hold both the RCB Avion Platinum and the Infinite (not privilige) at the same time? Is that true or false? Thanks for all the great articles!

4. WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard primary cardholders will have access to a new annual benefit, "Status Lift", to help you get closer to Silver, Gold or Platinum status each year. With Status Lift, you can earn $500 in tier qualifying spend, which applies towards achieving the next WestJet Rewards tier, for every $15,000 CAD in Eligible Purchases on your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard (up to a maximum of $1,500 in tier qualifying spend in a qualifying year). WestJet’s qualifying year is January 1 to December 31 of each calendar year. “Eligible Purchases” means net purchase transactions (including transactions on additional cards) that appear on your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard monthly statements prepared between January 1 and December 31 of each year, explained in further detail below. It is not based on the actual purchase or transaction date.

For example, Teal members earning the maximum of $1,500 in tier qualifying spend on Eligible Purchases with Status Lift would be halfway to achieving the $3,000 in tier qualifying spend to achieve Silver status. Similarly, members with existing Silver, Gold or Platinum status can use the $1,500 Status Lift towards requalifying for their current tier, or moving up to the next tier, as applicable.

Status Lift will automatically take effect beginning with your first monthly statement following the first purchase transaction on the credit card account.

Eligible Purchases for Status Lift are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits; credits for returns and adjustments will reduce or cancel Status Lift earned. Eligible purchases do not include fees, interest charges, or cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and certain bill payments).

Tier qualifying spend derived from Status Lift is earned through Eligible Purchases on the WestJet World Elite Mastercard and will be included in the calculation for determining the tier and resulting status of the primary cardholder only, subject to these benefit conditions.

To determine your spend for Status Lift, WestJet will divide the WestJet dollars reported on your WestJet RBC World Elite monthly statement by the standard WestJet dollar earn rate of 1.5%. Any bonus or additional WestJet dollars you may earn will not count towards Status Lift. The date on which your monthly statement is prepared and the WestJet dollars earned as determined by Royal Bank of Canada and reported on your statement will determine the qualifying year that the Eligible Purchases and any resulting Status Lift will be applied to, regardless of when the WestJet dollars are deposited to your WestJet Rewards account. For example, if your monthly statement is prepared on December 27, your Eligible Purchases will count towards Status Lift for the current qualifying year, even if the WestJet dollars are deposited to your account in the following year.

Status Lifts are awarded based on your credit card monthly statement date (that is, the date your statement is prepared), not the purchase or transaction date for individual purchase transactions. For greater clarity, Eligible Purchases made prior to the end of the qualifying year will not be eligible for Status Lift for that qualifying year if they do not appear on a monthly statement prepared prior to December 31. For example, if your credit card statement is prepared on the 27th day of each month and you make a purchase on December 28, the transaction will be included on your January statement and will not be an Eligible Purchase for the current qualifying year.

Status Lift of $500 CAD will be awarded up to three times during the qualifying year when your Eligible Purchases total 1) $15,000, 2) $30,000 and 3) $45,000. Each Status Lift will be awarded approximately 10 business days after the credit card statement date in which the spend threshold is achieved.

To receive Status Lift, your credit card account must be open and in good standing at the time of the benefit award. If you cancel your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard credit card before the end of a qualifying year, WestJet reserves the right to remove any Status Lift or tier adjustments you may have received through this benefit.

Status Lift amounts earned through this benefit are not counted towards the awarding of Milestone awards within the WestJet Rewards program.

The Status Lift amount and tier qualifying spend earned on WestJet flight or vacation packages will be combined to calculate total tier qualifying spend which counts towards the achievement of your immediate next tier. Your tier qualifying spend will reset at the start of each qualifying year (January 1st).

The end of the qualifying year is December 31, without regard to the time of the year that the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard credit card account is opened. This means that in the cardholder’s first year, the eligibility period for the Status Lift benefit may be less than twelve months.

This benefit has no monetary or other exchange value and cannot be sold or transferred.

WestJet and RBC reserve the right to change or withdraw the benefit at any time.

Group Benefits

How rbc insurance supporting group benefits clients.

We at RBC Insurance are working as quickly as possible to assess the impacts of COVID-19 and to keep you informed of key decisions that impact you and your group benefits plan. We are here to support you and your family. While things continue to move fast and change quickly, below is some important information.

COVID-19 Update: Short-Term Disability Claims

Short-term disability benefits provide income replacement, for short durations, in the event a person is unable to work due to injury or illness.

If you’ve tested positive and are diagnosed with COVID-19 and cannot work (even from home), whether or not you are displaying symptoms, benefits will be paid once the elimination period is satisfied. Standard claim forms must be submitted, including the Attending Physician Statement.

If you’ve tested negative for COVID-19, but have symptoms that prevent you from working (even from home), a standard STD application claim should be submitted. Standard contractual provisions would apply, including the elimination period.

If you are not at work because you’ve been advised to quarantine by a government or health care authority, and are not too ill to work otherwise , you will not be eligible for STD. For example, mass quarantines issued by a health authority or cautionary quarantines issued by an employer would not qualify for coverage. This means that if you have no disabling symptoms and cannot work from home, benefits will not be paid. A claim through the one of Government of Canada Employment Insurance program or any of the new COVID-19 response benefit programs should be submitted. These new programs include the Canada Recovery Benefit, the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit, and the Canada Recovery Caregiver Benefit and all provide income replacement to those who have been impacted due to COVID-19.

TIP: The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) provides up to two weeks of financial support for employees who are unable to work because they are sick or need to self-isolate due to COVID-19, or who have an underlying health condition that puts them at risk of getting COVID-19. Employees are encouraged to apply for this benefit when not in receipt of STD benefits, for example, during their STD elimination period. They cannot receive any other benefits while receiving the CRSB, including any STD benefits.

For more information on this benefit go to the Canada's Economic Response Plan opens new window website.

COVID-19 Update: Travel Insurance under RBC Insurance Group Benefits Plans

Our Group Benefits medical emergency coverage has changed effective January 1, 2021. COVID-19 will be covered for travel departing on or after January 1, 2021 while there is a Level 3 (Avoid Non-Essential travel) advisory or lower issued by the Government of Canada. For those insurance policies with Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage, COVID-19 Pandemic will continue to be considered a known occurrence and as such is excluded from coverage.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise and risk is heightened, we strongly recommend that you visit the Government of Canada’s Global Travel Advisory website before booking your trip and only travel when necessary.

I am planning a trip. Am I covered for medical emergency during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

If you depart on or after January 1, 2021 while there was a Level 3 (Avoid Non-Essential travel) or lower advisory in place, you will be covered for COVID-19 related claims under your group emergency medical insurance. If you have Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage, COVID-19 continues to be a known occurrence and will not be covered should you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to COVID-19.

If you travel to a location that is under a Level 4 (Avoid all travel) advisory, medical emergency will not be covered. If you are already in a country when the Level 4 advisory is issued, you will be given 10 days to return home. Your medical emergency will remain covered during the 10-day period.

Visit the Government of Canada Global Travel Advisory website for updates on travel advisories.

If you departed prior to January 1, 2021, you would only be covered under medical emergency for COVID-19 related claims if you were traveling for work that is deemed essential. Any leisure or non-essential travel would not be covered for COVID-19 related claims. Any medical emergency claims not related to COVID-19 continue to be covered.

If you are traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean, effective immediately and until further notice, our Group Benefits medical emergency top-up coverage is temporarily unavailable.

Visit the Government of Canada website for Guidance on Essential Services and Functions in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

I am now in a country where a Level 4 advisory was just issued. Am I covered for medical emergency?

I have to cancel my trip, or cut my trip short due to COVID-19, will my Group Benefit coverage cover my loss?

COVID-19 pandemic is considered a known occurrence under the Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage and is excluded from coverage. If you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to COVID-19, your Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption coverage will not cover the claim.

What is the difference between a Level 3 and Level 4 Advisory?

The Government of Canada issues 4 travel health notices for travel destinations as follows:

  • Level 1 - Practice usual precautions
  • Level 2 - Practice special precautions
  • Level 3 - Avoid all non-essential travel
  • Level 4 - Avoid all travel

Visit the Government of Canada Risk levels and Travel Advisories website for more information.

Do you need travel insurance?

Thanks to new federal regulations, U.S. consumers have more protections when flying. These rules require airlines to refund customers for U.S. flights canceled for certain reasons beyond a passenger’s control. Airline customers also have more rights when their flights are delayed. The rules are complicated, so be sure you refer to the Department of Transportation’s refund guidelines .

In more good news for travelers, the new regulations spurred industry improvements ; nine airlines changed their policies to guarantee coverage of hotels and ten airlines to guarantee meals for stranded passengers.

Still, for expensive trips, you will want to assess your credit card's travel insurance benefits. If you find them wanting, you can purchase trip insurance, which typically runs about 5% to 6% of the cost of your trip. The average cost for U.S. travelers from April 2022 to April 2023 was $284, according to the Los Angeles Times .

Best Cash Back Credit Cards With No Annual Fee In Canada For April 2024

Updated: Apr 10, 2024, 9:28am

Cash-back credit cards make tapping your plastic even more tempting, since they turn some of your everyday purchases into cash rewards. They do so by allowing cardholders to earn back a percentage of their eligible credit card spending, either as a deposit into their bank account or as a statement credit.

That all sounds well and good, but some of the best cash-back credit cards have a major catch: They come with an annual fee that ends up eating into your rewards. And while some of these earn enough cash back that they cancel out said fee, spending enough to cover (or even surpass) the fee can be a big commitment—especially if you’re not sure how much you’ll spend each year on the card in question.

If thinking about such a prospect gives you anxiety, there are cash-back cards that have no annual fee —meaning their rewards don’t come with a yearly cost, so it’s pure reward. These cards can be a way to earn cash back without any kind of barrier hindering your earning potential. Here are the best cash back credit cards with no annual fee in Canada.

If you opt to deposit your cash-back rewards into a Tangerine Savings Account, you get to add a third category that earns 2% cash back as well.

That said, it is a bit sparing when it comes to other perks, but if you meet the income requirements for its high-end counterparts, the Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard, you can get a few more frills, like travel perks, rental car collision loss/damage insurance and mobile device insurance.

Some credit cards offer cash-back rewards, meaning cardholders can receive a small percentage of their purchases back in cash. For instance, if your card offers 4% cash back on groceries, and you spend $100 at the grocery store, you’d receive $4 in cash back. The cards act as a way to help you to “save” a little on everyday spending, while helping to pay off your credit card bill or fund your bank account (depending on how you redeem it).

Typically, cardholders can redeem their cash back earnings for a cash deposit in their bank account or a credit towards their monthly bill.In some instances, you can only redeem cash back once per year and it’s applied to your credit card statement automatically. Often, if you redeem as you go, you’ll have to earn a certain amount of cash back to redeem (like a $25 minimum) but some cash-back cards allow you to redeem smaller amounts.

Typically, cash back credit cards have a base earn rate—usually 0.5% to 1%—that applies across all eligible purchases.Often, they’ll allow you to earn more cash back—typically 1% to 4—in select purchase categories, like gas, groceries, restaurants or recurring bills. Some cards have a cap on how much of your spending is eligible. For example, you may get 2% cash back on gas transactions when you spend $500 or less filling up your tank each month, but after that, you’ll only earn the 1% base rate on gas purchases.

How Does Cash Back on a Credit Card Work?

Every time you use your cash back credit card, you earn back a percentage of your spending in cash, which accumulates in your cardholder account. You can typically see how much you’ve accumulated on your online bank account or mobile banking app. Some purchases you make will earn you a higher percentage of cash back rewards than others, depending on the card you have. It’s worth noting that your card may require you to accumulate a minimum amount of cash back before cashing in on the rewards. Once eligible to collect, you can get your rewards deposited into your bank account or credited towards your next monthly bill. You may also be able to get the cash back on a gift card.

What Does No Annual Fee on a Cash Back Credit Card Mean?

Some credit cards charge you an annual fee, which could be as low as $25 or over $500. With a no-annual-fee cash-back card, that fee doesn’t exist—but there may be other fees to consider. Foreign transaction fees, interest charges, balance transfer fees, and cash advance fees are all common with credit cards. Read your card agreement carefully to learn the details about fees so you can avoid those fees when possible.

Why Do Some Cash Back Credit Cards Have an Annual Fee?

Cash back credit cards that have an annual fee typically offer higher rewards rates, more attractive welcome bonuses , and/or other perks. Before selecting a card with an annual fee, carefully evaluate if its extra benefits justify the additional cost. If they don’t, there are many cash-back credit cards that don’t come with an annual fee that also offer fair rewards and perks.

Not every cash-back credit card with no annual fee is perfect for everyone. Since each card offers different perks based on purchasing habits, you’ll need to consider your lifestyle and find the credit card that best compliments it.

Forbes Advisor simply highlights the key facts about each credit card to make it easier for you to compare them and find the best one for you. It’s up to you to do the math and consider which one makes the most sense based on your spending history and plans. Here’s what you should consider:

  • Fees: Do you often do balance transfers? Make purchases outside of Canada? You may want to consider a card with low balance transfer and FX fees .
  • Annual percentage rate (APR): Will you be paying off your credit card in full every month? Credit card interest rates are often higher than other loans. The best card for you may be one with a low interest introductory APR offer.
  • Earn rate: Do you drive a lot? Like to dine out? Consider yourself a frequent flyer? Choose a card that’ll give you the greatest percentage back in those areas.
  • Bonus categories: If a card offers 5% on rotating categories (meaning you can swap out the categories from which you get a large percentage of cash back) but you don’t want to keep track of them, it’s probably not the card for you.
  • Redemption and rewards: Is it easy to redeem your cash back? Is there a minimum or maximum redemption amount? Make sure you can get your rewards in the way that is ideal for you.
  • Other perks: Does the card offer other perks you could benefit from? Some offer rental car insurance, built-in travel insurance, extended warranties and more that could help save you money.

Once you’ve read through all of the card details, found out how much you spend in different categories, and considered the bonus features that could be beneficial to you, you’re better equipped to make a well-informed decision.

Applying for a cash-back credit card with no annual fee is the same as applying for any other credit card. Once you find one that is right for you and you’re eligible for (meaning, your credit score and income requirements align), you can visit a bank to apply in-person or sign up by yourself online. No matter the option you choose, you’ll be asked to provide personal information, including your Social Insurance Number and financial details. Once finished, you could get approved instantly or you may have to wait for your application to be reviewed manually. Once approved, you’ll receive your card in a few days or weeks.

What are the benefits of a no annual fee cash back credit card?

The benefits of a no annual fee cash-back credit card depend on the card. Common benefits include:

  • The ability to earn cash back with no annual fee
  • Consumer protections like purchase protection and extended warranties
  • Travel protections such as rental car insurance

Before choosing the right no annual fee cash back credit card for you, consider your lifestyle, spending habits and compare the offerings of all cards, including the earning rates, fees and other benefits.

How do I choose the best no annual fee cash back credit card for me?

To choose the best cash-back card with no annual fee, take a look at where you spend your money most—groceries, gas, entertainment, etc.—and find a card that offers the greatest cash back for those categories. Also take into account the extra benefits the card offers (such as rental car insurance) to discover if they could be of use for you, as well as its fees (like low FX fees) to decide if they could be an extra perk for your lifestyle.

How do I redeem my cash back rewards?

How you redeem your cash-back rewards will depend on the card you have. Each card has different rules that will dictate how you can use and manage your cash backs. For example, some cards have a minimum redemption amount, meaning you’ll have to wait until you accumulate a certain amount of points before you can retrieve your points, which again, will depend on the card. You can have the cash back deposited into your bank account and/or credited to your monthly bill. Sometimes, you can get them back on a gift card.

What are the drawbacks of a no annual fee cash back credit card?

By choosing a no-annual-fee cash-back credit card, you could miss out on larger amounts of cash back in the long run. That’s because credit cards that charge an annual fee have higher rates and more benefits. To determine if a card with an annual fee makes sense for you, estimate how much cash back you could earn—if it’s higher than the annual fee, it may be the right option.

But remember: Most cash-back cards charge high APRs—so if you don’t think you’ll pay off your card each month in full, you’ll pay a hefty sum in interest. In that case, a credit card or loan with a lower interest rate may be a better option.

How can I improve my chances of getting approved for a no annual fee cash back credit card?

If you want to improve your chances of getting approved for a no-annual-fee cash-back credit card, first check your credit score and report so you know where you stand. If you have a poor credit score, you may not get approved for the card you’re interested in. In that case, work on paying down existing debt to prove you’ll be able to pay off your card balance. You can also find out if you prequalify for a card, which means your credit score and financial profile matches its eligibility criteria.

Masters: Viktor Hovland withdraws from next week’s RBC Heritage after missing cut at Augusta National

After his 1-under 71 to start the week, viktor hovland fell apart on friday at augusta national.

After a brutal finish at Augusta National on Friday, Viktor Hovland is taking a break.

Hovland, who missed the cut at the Masters, officially withdrew from the RBC Heritage next week. The tournament at Harbour Town is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events.

Viktor Hovland WD from next week’s RBC Heritage. The field will be finalized after the conclusion of the Masters Tournament. — PGA TOUR Communications (@PGATOURComms) April 13, 2024

Hovland has won six times in his career on Tour, including three times last season. He won both the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship in the FedExCup Playoffs to win the season-long title, too.

Lately, though, Hovland hasn't been anywhere near as dominant. He made the cut in all five of his Tour starts this season entering this week, but he finished inside the top 20 just once. At The Players Championship last month, which marked his most recent Tour start, he finished T62.

Then on Friday, Hovland seemed to fall apart completely. After a 71 on Thursday, Hovland went 9-over in his second round and missed the cut at the Masters for the first time in his career. He made two double bogeys and had a triple bogey at the par-5 second. Though it was his double at the 15th that was easily the worst of the day. Hovland missed a very makeable par putt and then ended up doubling after an awful attempt at a tap-in.

Golf… Six months ago, Hovland was on top of the world, winning big events, leading the Ryder Cup team and smiling throughout. Now, a 81 at Augusta, a missed cut and a withdrawal from next week’s RBC Heritage. Happens to everyone but hard to watch. pic.twitter.com/pvd91LdTr4 — Jamie Kennedy (@jamierkennedy) April 13, 2024

Hovland ended up throwing the ball into the water after finally making his putt.

Though the 26-year-old recently parted with his swing coach, and he’s been bouncing around ever since, he said ahead of the Masters that he felt like he was in a good place.

“I feel like I'm on a good track right now and we'll see where that takes us,” Hovland said. “But, yeah, I mean, it's one of those things. Like, I was playing great golf last year, but it's not like I'm trying to change my golf swing. It's just sometimes the game of golf you try to do the same every day, but then things aren't the same every day when you go to the golf course. I took a huge break after last year and when I came back, things were a little bit different and I had to kind of find my way back to where I think I'm going to play my best golf.”

It’s unclear when Hovland will play on Tour again. He’ll have three more opportunities before the PGA Championship next month at Valhalla Golf Club.
