Robyn Announces New US Tour Dates, Here's Why You Need To Go

Robyn's 2019 Honey Tour kicked off on February 5, 2019 in Stavanger, Norway for a total of four European dates before making its way to North America for a 13-date trek. The response to the Honey Tour has been overwhelming positive, so much so that the "Dancing On My Own" singer has recently announced a set of new American dates and is upgrading from the smaller theater venues to arenas for the new run! To put things into perspective, the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles where she kicked off the North American leg holds 5,000 fans while The Forum where she'll hold her new Los Angeles date in July, holds 17,500 people – that's literally over 3x the size!

As someone who attended the North American kick-off concert at the Hollywood Palladium (read my raving review HERE ) and then was left so hungry for another round of Robyn that I jumped on a plane to follow her to Seattle, Washington for her March 1 performance, I can confirm that the demand and high praise for the Honey Tour comes completely warranted.

Robyn is an icon in every sense of the word, the authenticity of her artistry has set a high bar and the connection her music has with her fans is proof to it. Robyn makes high brow pop for the music lover, it's not catered to the masses but it's still palatable for them. That balance Robyn creates between her musics authenticity and its mainstream appeal is a stroke of genius in my eyes, very few can achieve this type of magic and to witness it all being performed live, it's goosebumps-inducing euphoria to see the crowds connection to a dancing Robyn pouring her heart out on stage.

Check out the setlist from her most recent show in Paris, France below!

In Robyn We Trust: Singer Gives Fans Everything on ‘Honey’ Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Over the weekend, several viral videos showed spontaneous dance parties erupting on New York City subway platforms as ecstatic crowds leaving Robyn ‘s Madison Square Garden show sang “Dancing on My Own” and “Hang With Me” one more time for the road. That spirit of getting lost in the moment and dancing one’s way to a better place — sans subway footage — was very much still present two nights later, when the Swedish pop star brought her Honey Tour to Boston’s House of Blues.

With her stage draped in diaphanous white material, Robyn’s set lasted maybe 100 minutes top to bottom. The streamlined performance was sequenced like a DJ might structure it, slowly building toward a big finish but with plenty of sizzling peaks and cool-off valleys between. Beginning with “Send to Robin Immediately” and the title track from the singer’s 2018 album Honey , Robyn — in her best Guilty Remnant white — stood nearly motionless for the duration of her first two songs, patiently moving out of the shadows to center stage while the tension built.

Things began to loosen up considerably once she launched into “Indestructible” from her Body Talk LP, the crowd roaring in approval and moving along as the singer gyrated her hips and flung her arms wide as if defending herself against an army of attackers. She followed that with “Hang With Me,” another Body Talk track, for one of those early set peaks and an enthusiastic crowd sing-along.

Dancing was a particular emphasis of this show, thanks largely to Robyn’s idiosyncratic style of movement. Navigating her band’s seamless transitions between songs, she added an almost interpretive element to her performance, using her stage risers to sit or kneeling to heighten drama. In other sections, as with “Because It’s in the Music” — prior to which she changed into an all-black outfit, her hair tied back with a ribbon — a male dancer joined her for extended routines that emphasized sensuality and had more than a touch of Hollywood musical-style choreography.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The soft-spoken entertainer, who didn’t say much more than “Boston, how are you?” or “Come on, Boston!” for the duration of the show, also played to her strengths as a singer. On tracks like “Honey” and “Because It’s in the Music,” she explored the softer nooks and crannies of her voice in a vulnerable whisper, while on some of her best-loved numbers like “Dancing on My Own,” the audience’s ability to handle her choruses gave her a little space to throw in some soulful ad libs.

In addition to the beloved songs from her three solo albums, Robyn’s set was also peppered with recent collaborations. Singer-rapper Maluca came out to dance and perform her parts on the pulsating “Love Is Free,” the 2015 recording billed under the moniker La Bagatelle Magique, while Robyn’s first encore of the evening began with the palate-cleansing dub of the Mr. Tophat recording “Trust Me.” For her final performance of the evening, Robyn sang a remixed version of “Who Do You Love,” a 2014 track she recorded with Kindness — the DJ who’s currently keeping energy levels up between sets by spinning an array of pop, hip-hop and dance tunes.

The night’s biggest moments of release were, of course, in the main set-concluding run that began with “Dancing on My Own,” during which she let the crowd sing an entire chorus without any accompaniment and paused for an extended, rapturous round of applause. She quickly strung that classic together with “Missing U” and “Call Your Girlfriend,” even replicating some of her floor-humping dance moves from the latter’s video as she rolled, backward, across the stage. Those moments, combining immaculate pop songs with emotional catharsis, signaled a way to let go and move forward, even after the music fades. All you have to do is press play again when you get home.

Setlist: “Send to Robin Immediately” “Honey” “Indestructible” “Hang With Me” “Beach2k20” “Ever Again” “Be Mine” “Because It’s in the Music” “Between the Lines” “Love Is Free” (feat. Maluca) “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What to Do” “Dancing on My Own” “Missing U” “Call Your Girlfriend”

Encore 1 “Trust Me” “Stars 4-Ever” “With Every Heartbeat”

Encore 2 “Human Being” “Who Do You Love”

Friday 21st October. Aldershot West End Centre. Robyn Hitchcock. Night three of a three night run of gigs and it’s off to the rock n roll mecca that is the West End Centre in Aldershot.

I am somewhat of a Hitchcock novice and it’s the first time seeing him after being recommended by my companions tonight ‘The Twin Towers’ (The Burgess Brothers who are big fans). We are also joined by Antony Head and Big Al.

Nashville based Hitchcock is a bit of a British institution with his quirky idiosyncratic and witty songs written throughout his long career. I’m not quite sure what to expect tonight, stand up show or concert and in the end it turns out to be a bit of both.

It’s a solo show and with just an acoustic guitar and polka dot shirt for company, Hitchcock rattles through his back catalogue. I am familiar with about half of the material and for me some worked and some didn’t with it sometimes veering off into a caricature of himself almost trying too hard to be quirky. In between songs the stories and random observations worked about fifty percent of the time and I am sure that this is blasphemous to his legion of fans as I suspect that is one of the reasons they come to the shows but it was not really for me.

He is joined occasionally on stage by Emma Swift and it is in these moments that the songs really shine with Swift providing accompaniment and harmonies that give depth to the material with the songs being played straight.

All in all an interesting night and I’m glad I’ve seen him but I will probably stick to the recorded output rather than live.

Keep on rockin y’all.

English singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock is so multi-talented; to be more exact he is a guitarist, pianist, and also plays the harmonica and bass guitar. As part of The Soft Boys, he started he was able to branch off and start his own solo career, a career that has included a very solid cult following of fans.

Since he has a history going back to the 70s, the variable types of fans that came to his live show range in so many age groups. Armed with his guitar, he strolls onto the stage, which is met with a solid applause. He just seems like the epitome of cool. As he begins to play his first song, you can see him fall completely into the song. Every emotion comes through and touches you through to the core. Between each song he engages the audience with a thank you first, will tell a little anecdote or background on the next song. His lyrics are so touching because they are so raw and real. He also includes a bit of comedy in his songs. Overall, Robyn Hitchcock’s show includes so many elements, that it can appeal to a broad group of people of all ages.

The show was great, as always. We've seen Robyn about a dozen times and every time the show is different yet amazing. He is such a magical songwriter and performer. And Eddie's Attic is so intimate--really the best place to see a show in Atlanta. The only downside of the show was there was no real lighting of the stage. Robyn performed in the dark, with only faint blue lighting in the background. We could not see his face at all. That was somewhat disappointing. We saw him there twice last winter and they used normal stage lighting. Maybe he just didn't want lights shining on him this time. Otherwise the show was just as great as always.

My wife has listened to Robyn Hitchcock for quite a while. We saw him with the Psychedelic Furs concert a few years ago. When he had a gig in Milwaukee we figured we would go.

He did a really good job being now a one man band. His voice is still right there. He can play an acoustic guitar as well as anyone. It would be nice to have the Egyptians with him still, but he does alright by himself. Great location, fun place to be and relaxing evening.

This was one of the most incredible shows I have seen in years! He played all acoustic and all of the songs were groovy! He played alot of his old stuff and a few of his new songs, too! The ghost of Kent Stage even made a couple of appearances! He mentioned ghost (s) in at least four song, too!!! Plus, he stuck around and I got to meet and talk with him for a few minutes... A wonderful evening!!

Robyn never fails to bring beauty, humor, and exceptional performance skills to his shows. He is a true legend and precious soul. His music touches me in such a way that I am moved. I hope he returns to Albuquerque many times over. I will never tire of seeing him, hearing his stories, and reveling in the glow and glory of his music.

My best gig of the year so far! It was a privelage to witness Robyn playing a solo acoustic show in a small, intimate venue. On top of the quality songwriting and virtuoso fingerpicking, Robyn gave lots of engaging and humourous banter between songs. 10/10

Another first-class evening of consummate musicianship, haute couture, and whimsical repartee, although honestly sometimes I think Robyn cares more about those damned rodents than he does about us--his loyal, PAYING audients.

Robyn Malcolm as Penny in After the Party who is looking out a window

‘I’m not here to make other women feel like shit’: Robyn Malcolm on acting, ageing and the power of art

One of New Zealand’s most beloved actors continues to challenge expectations put on women in hit series she also co-created, After the Party

When Robyn Malcolm did a recent shoot for a magazine, they sent her through the proposed cover. She called them immediately. “I said, can you not do that to my face?”

Pushing against expectations for women to look and act a certain way – young, carefree, likable – has driven Malcolm her whole career, but especially since menopause. “They took notice, and they put me on the cover with everything as is. They said, ‘We just thought everyone liked that.’ Well, no, because I’m not here to make other women feel like shit.”

It’s partly the reason 59-year-old Malcolm – one of New Zealand’s best known and most beloved actors – co-created the new series she also stars in, After the Party. Last month, she won best actress at France’s Series Mania Forum for her role as Penny in the show. The character is a high school teacher who is the antithesis of a typical older woman on screen; an abrasive, unruly know-it-all. She tears strips off her students, bikes against the wind (it’s shot in New Zealand’s notoriously wild capital city, Wellington) and accuses her former partner, played by Scottish actor Peter Mullan , of sexually assaulting their teenage daughter’s friend. She makes frustrating decisions. In short, she acts like a real person.

“Women our age have lived a life, and have got quite angry,” Malcolm says. “They’re post-menopausal, so they’re in the middle of a whole storm of stuff. They’re not living in the middle of a happy ending.”

Many in New Zealand have been watching her on screen since they were kids – as nurse Ellen Crozier in Shortland Street, the country’s longest-running soap opera, as working-class mum Cheryl West in show Outrageous Fortune, in Australian shows Upper Middle Bogan and Rake.

Since before she was a single mum raising a baby and a toddler on the set of Outrageous Fortune – “It was a blur, I would get up at 4.30 to express milk in the dark, the only sound would be the pump like a vibrator, I was delirious” – Malcolm has always been a talker. She is, as she puts it, a “compulsive discloser”. When her son Charlie, now 20, was six, he gave her clear directives before entering his classroom. “He would say ‘No singing, no talking in accents and no holding hands’. And I said ‘Well what do I have left? That’s basically your mother’.”

She dealt with miscarriage, the strain of new motherhood and later menopause. The latter floored her with debilitating panic attacks. She made a 2022 documentary about those, You, Me and Anxiety, but was told not to focus on the menopause, lest it would alienate men. Instead, she channelled much of her experience into After the Party, dubbed “the best TV drama we’ve ever made,” by New Zealand pop culture website The Spinoff , airing on the ABC in Australia at the end of April, and Channel 4 in the UK later this year.

Malcolm grew up in the small South Island town of Ashburton, the oldest of four girls. Aged about 15, the classical music scholar began to feel restless. She marched against the 1981 Springbok rugby tour, got hit with a clod of dirt and got the hell out, which back then meant moving to Wellington. Her first job out of drama school was at the now defunct Downstage Theatre company, where then-artistic director Colin McColl recalls she could always do the “gruntier, grittier stuff”. She has only developed more depth, he says.

“She’s had knocks in her life … it’s this breadth of experience she brings to her work, all this history.”

Malcolm played a much-loved character for five years in hit local TV series Outrageous Fortune, winning multiple acting awards. But her star power was dented in 2010, when she led a handful of high-profile actors in arguing for better conditions on The Hobbit films, while Warner Bros warned they would be driven offshore. Then-prime minister John Key changed the law to disallow collective bargaining and the resulting public backlash against Malcolm saw her blacklisted locally. It’s still a sore point. “I lost work after that, there’s no doubt.”

In After the Party, Penny’s character is convinced she’s right, but she’s also vilified. Are there similarities? “It’s far easier to blame the woman. It’s far easier to say you know, ‘She’s hysterical,’ and the only way we can deal with her is by saying that she’s nuts.”

On set, Malcolm is “bold and argumentative, but only about the work,” says After the Party producer Helen Bowden, who was blown away by Malcolm and writer Dianne Taylor’s early scripts. Malcolm was heavily involved up until the filming, Bowden said. “On the day of the first shoot, she looked me in the eye and said, ‘I’m only doing one job during this shoot, which is being Penny.’”

This commitment was tested halfway through, when Malcolm tore her MCL ligament kayaking. “We were out in the Cook Strait and I was battling this huge sea and because I was so full of adrenaline I didn’t know what was happening, and when I got back I couldn’t walk,” Malcolm says. Her answer: for Penny to develop a limp.

In the show, one of Penny’s students wants to drop out, because what’s the point if the world is dying? It is something that weighs on Malcolm’s mind. “I don’t know how you can be a Kiwi and not be an environmentalist. It staggers me when people aren’t, because this country has been so beautiful and we’re watching it fall apart,” Malcolm says.

She gardens, drives an electric car and lives in a small house, but points out she’s just flown to France. “I struggle with this, and I cross my fingers that I’m doing enough, which I know I’m not.”

What she can do is write a new work. “Storytelling is so important. There’s this magical thing that happens between you and a piece of art, and that can connect us all.”
