Roscrea (Irish Ros Cré , "Wood of Cré") is a town in County Tipperary in Ireland, with a population in 2016 of 5446. It has a concentration of medieval buildings, notably the castle, and is also a good base for nearby sites across the county boundary in Offaly and Laois.

Get in [ edit ]

Expressway X12 runs every two hours from Dublin Airport and Busáras via Portlaoise , taking two hours to Roscrea, and continuing west to Nenagh and Limerick . A Local Link bus also plies the section between Roscrea and Nenagh.

Kavanagh's Bus 812 runs twice M-Sa between Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles and Urlingford.

A branch railway line connects Limerick , Nenagh and Roscrea to the main line at Ballybrophy (for trains between Dublin Heuston and Cork). There are two trains M-Sa and one on Sunday, and travel time from Dublin is 90 min. Roscrea 52.96 -7.795 1 railway station is 500 m north of town centre: there are no facilities to collect online tickets here.

By car from Dublin follow N7 onto M7 (the first section to Naas has not yet been upgraded to motorway) then stay on M7 to N62 the Roscrea turnoff.

  • Black Mills nearby on Church St is a restored watermill, included in the castle admission. Within is the original 12th C St Cronan's High Cross.
  • The Round Tower next to Black Mills was built around 1100. These distinctively Irish structures are believed to be bell towers for adjacent churches; they could serve as look-outs but were not primarily defensive. Roscrea's tower is only 20 m high: the top and conical cap were removed during 1798 "The Year of the French". Church Street nowadays cuts across the monastic site, and the Tesco just behind doesn't do much for the ambiance.
  • St Cronan's 12th century Romanesque church survives only in the west gable on Church St, the rest was demolished in 1812 when the present Anglican church was built. There's also a replica of the High Cross, the original being within Black Mills. St Crónán of Roscrea was the 7th century founder of the nearby abbey, where an 8th century monk called Dimma MacNathi produced a beautifully-illustrated copy of the Gospels. This Book of Dimma is nowadays part of the Book of Kells display in Trinity College Dublin. The present church is a product of the "First Fruits" initiative to build more Protestant churches in Ireland by the neat trick of taxing the Catholics - see County Tipperary for more on this story.
  • 52.953 -7.8 2 Roscrea Friary or Abbey was founded in the 15th century by Greyfriars (Franciscans). It was smashed at the Dissolution but the bell-tower remains, along with north and east walls.
  • RC Church of St Cronan's is a block south of the Friary on Convent St. Building started in 1843 but the Famine delayed things. It was dedicated in 1855 after a successful fund-raising tour of the USA.
  • 52.948 -7.774 3 Sean Ross Abbey was the original site of St Crónán's monastery: living in a bog was great for solitude but was distinctly boggy, so they moved on to Roscrea. In 1750 Corville House was built here and was a family home to 1932; it then passed to the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who ran a home for unmarried mothers and their babies until 1970. The babies were sent for adoption, mostly to the USA. Many mothers and babies lie in the graveyard known tweely as "The Angels Plot", which ducks the question of why so many died here. In 1971 the home became a school for children with special learning needs, still run by the Sisters.
  • 52.946 -7.749 4 Monaincha Church is the remains of a 12th century abbey, originally on an island in Loch Cré (Monaincha means "bog island"). It's cited in 12th and 13th century texts as a place that no female can enter - even female birds or animals would instantly die. But the male inhabitants live forever, until they're so decrepid that they ask to be taken off in order to expire. The area has been drained for farmland and those mystic properties nowadays affect neither visitors to the church nor guests of the nearby spa.
  • 52.88 -7.956 5 Moneygall is a village 14 km southwest of Roscrea, straddling the boundary with County Offaly . It was the ancestral home of Falmouth Kearney who emigrated to Ohio, and was maternal great-great-great grandfather of Barack Obama, 44th President of the USA. O'Bama, as he should surely be styled, visited in May 2011 and in Olie Hayes' pub the First Lady was taught how to pour a correct pint of Guinness. The brief spell of Obama tourism has been and gone - let's face it, he never opened a string of plush golf resorts like that other guy - so the name mostly endures in the Obama Plaza service area, junction 23 of M7.
  • 52.958 -7.7071 7 Ballaghmore Castle , Ballaghmore R32 K123 ( 8 km east of Roscrea ). Just across the boundary into County Laois, this sturdy five-storey tower was built in 1480 to control the Bealach Mor - the "great road" through Ossory. It was damaged by Cromwell's forces in 1647 but restored in the 19th century. It was then used as a granary and again fell into disrepair until 1990, when it was refurbished as a private residence. Much of its medieval structure is well-preserved, including a "Sheela na Gig" who, with arms akimbo, looks like she's dancing a jig. Tours by arrangement, and you can rent the whole place: the castle sleeps 15 and the manor house five. Adult €5, child €3 . ( updated Jun 2021 )

Roscrea at ‘tipping point’ as its only hotel is given to refugees

roscrea travel limited

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry has claimed Roscrea is at a ‘tipping point’ as 160 asylum seekers are due to move into the town’s only hotel.

Hundreds of protestors are expected to gather again today outside the Racket Hall Hotel following the surprise announcement that it will close to the public and begin accommodating international protection applicants.

Today's top videos

Story continues below.

Many local residents believe their town is ‘full to capacity’ as the convent in Roscrea already houses up to 400 asylum seekers and a further 200 at the former Sean Ros Abbey.

The hotel’s 40 bedrooms are now being repurposed to accommodate families, totalling 160 people, seeking international protection.

The owners, Swiftcastle Roscrea Ltd have signed up with the Department of Integration for 12 months.

Veteran TD Michael Lowry has said he was ‘surprised and disappointed’ by the announcement, claiming his constituency is ‘overwhelmed’

‘The people of Roscrea have already responded in a kind and generous manner by welcoming hundreds of displaced people into the town,’ he told Tipp FM.

roscrea travel limited

‘There’s already a direct provision centre and we have already provided places for 400 Ukrainian refugees in the town.

‘On top of that there are local factories and businesses who have large numbers of foreign nationals employed. The town has also asylum seekers accommodated in numerous houses.’

The Independent TD insisted that the people of Roscrea ‘are not racist’.

‘They have welcomed the victims of the war in Ukraine with open arms and willingly opened their hearts to those in need.

‘But I have to say yesterday’s announcement is a tipping point and I have serious concerns about it. The town is already overburdened… Services are pushed beyond their limit, there’s no over-night garda presence, schools in the town are beyond capacity, and GPs and medical services are not able to cope.’

Mr Lowry has claimed the large presence of asylum seekers in Roscrea have made many residents feeling concerned. He said reoccurring incidents in recent months have ‘eroded their sense of security’.

‘They do not feel safe on the streets,’ he said.

‘Parents are fearful of allowing their teenagers out after dark and families and older people have had to increase security in their homes. That’s the reality of the facts in Roscrea at the moment.’

Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris said he had ‘full respect’ for Mr Lowry’s position. However, he insists the Government has an obligation to cater for those seeking protection in Ireland.

Pic: Sasko Lazarov/RollingNews.ie

‘What I would say to him and all public representatives is that this is not a matter of Government policy, this is the Government responding to an emergency and trying to find shelter to put a roof over people’s head,’ he told RTE’s News at One.

‘People in every community have a right to have concerns, to ask questions and seek information when there is to be any change in a village or town, that’s human nature.

‘The Government policy is to move beyond this scenario where we are having to make use of whatever is available to provide shelter and to try to get to a point where we are less reliant on the private market, where we have a State-owned response to this,’ he said.

The property is described as a ‘large refurbished four-star hotel accommodation’ with amenities and ‘ample community recreational space on site’.

The new residents will be provided with high-speed wifi, a self-catering service and a weekly voucher or debit card for a local store. In addition, a transport service has been established which will be supplemented by the provider.

Community group ‘Roscrea Stands Up’ has encouraged its 2,300 social media followers to attend the protest today.

‘Racket Hall hotel been closed to the people of Roscrea and the surrounding areas – our only functioning Hotel,’ it stated.

‘The Government has closed yet another business in Roscrea… no consideration for the staff.

‘There will be a protest at 3.30pm on the main street on Saturday the 13th of January. We need everyone in Roscrea and the surrounding area to attend.

‘We need people whom live in other parts of Ireland that are originally from Roscrea to attend, we need to come out and protest peacefully,’ the post read.

Sinn Féin local election candidate for Roscrea Breandán Ó Conchúir has said the recent development is yet another example of the ‘failed asylum policy’ of the Government.

‘Less than a year on from the decision to house Ukrainians in the old convent, yet it appears the government has learned nothing from that experience and once again is making decisions without informing locals or ensuring services are in place,’ he said.

Protesters outside Gannon’s hotel in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. Pic: Fran Veale

‘Roscrea has welcomed people from all over the world into their community over the years, the last census showed 17% of the population of Roscrea was from non-Irish ethnic backgrounds, these people live and work locally and have by and large integrated into the community.

‘However you cannot have integration without honesty, and it is clear the government is not interested in honesty.

‘I also would have concerns as to the change of the Racket hall from a hotel to a direct provision centre, it is the only hotel in the town and any effort to develop tourism in the area will suffer if we do not have accommodation,’ he said.

Fianna Fail TD Jackie Cahill told the Irish Daily Mail that Roscrea does have enough resources to cater for 160 more asylum seekers.

‘There’s a lot being asked of Roscrea but I’ve been assured that there are enough resources for the town to be able to cope,’ he said.

Protesters at the Capuchin Friary on Wednesday in Carlow town that was originally earmarked for male refugees.

‘Myself and the local council will be meeting the Minister next week to ensure that the town gets a fair crack of the whip.

‘I think the residents deserved more consultation and there was a bit of confusion about who would be placed at the hotel.

‘It now appears that families are going to be sent there which I feel will bring a bit of normality back as no one wants to see women and children out in the cold on a winter’s day.’

It’s back by popular demand — Delta and American Express unveiled the next iteration of the limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card on the heels of the overwhelming response from Card Members when first launched in 2022 .

The new limited-edition cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircraft 1 that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The new limited-edition Delta SkyMiles Reserve Cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircrafts that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The card is available exclusively for new and existing Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business Card Members from April 25 through June 5, 2024, while supplies last. The new design comes after recent enhancements made to the Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards to improve the travel experience and deliver everyday value to Members, both in the air and on the ground.

“At Delta, innovation and experience are at the core of everything we do,” said Prashant Sharma, V.P. of Loyalty at Delta Air Lines. “Each card carries the legacy of countless journeys and embodies the spirit of exploration that drives our customers and all of us at Delta. When combined with the recently upgraded benefits, these cards provide a nod to our storied past and symbolize the elevated experiences our customers can expect in their future travels.”

In 2022, Delta and American Express launched the first iteration of the limited-edition Boeing Delta 747 Card design, one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. The new design is made with 33% metal from a retired Delta Boeing 747 plane and has a white glossy finish, which is inspired by clouds.

“We’re bringing back one of our most popular Card designs ever with a new look honoring the ‘Queen of the Skies,’” said Jon Gantman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cobrand Product Management at American Express. “Given the strong response from customers with our first Card design, we wanted to find another exciting opportunity for aviation enthusiasts and Card Members to have a piece of aviation history in their wallets.”

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express Cards offer premium travel benefits for Delta loyalists, including an enhanced Companion Certificate each year after renewal 2 , an MQD Headstart that helps you get closer to Status, miles accelerators, access to exclusive reservations through Global Dining Access by Resy 3 , and more.

Roscrea faces many challenges but none caused by asylum seekers, anti-racism vigil hears

People camping around braziers outside where asylum seekers are staying only creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, says union official.

Roscrea is facing many challenges but none of them are caused by people seeking refuge from war and oppression, an anti-racism vigil held in the town over the weekend has heard.

Siptu organiser Pat McCabe told the vigil, organised by the Tipperary Anti-racism Network, that the decision to convert the town’s only hotel, Racket Hall, for use as accommodation for international protection applicants earlier this year had led to anti-migrant sentiment .

“The announcement about Racket Hall sparked a conversation and fear among some that led them to fall back on slogans resonating with fear rather than fact – ‘Roscrea is Full’, ‘Stop Changing Our Culture’, phrases that were tossed about, creating a narrative that doesn’t reflect the town we know,” he said.

Mr McCabe said Roscrea had always been a place of welcome and opportunity but, like many other towns in Ireland’s heartlands, it was no stranger to hardship with the ravages of the financial crash, the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis all posing challenges for people.

The Border ‘back door’: why are so many migrants crossing into the State from Northern Ireland?

“None of these crises are caused by people seeking refuge from war, famine and persecution in their own native lands,” he said. “Allegations, rumour and supposition, unsupported by any evidence, of antisocial or criminal behaviour by people of whatever country of origin living in Roscrea cannot be allowed to gain credence. These rumours are rooted in fear and insularity.”

But, he said, Roscrea, which was built on an ancient main road from Limerick to Dublin, was not an insular place but rather a place based on hospitality that has always welcomed newcomers, as shown by the great work done by Roscrea people in welcoming those fleeing war and persecution.

[  Roscrea protests: ‘We can’t get medical appointments, so we can’t take any more, but we don’t want any far right activists here’  ]

[  It is absurd to claim ‘Roscrea is full’. The town’s real problem is depopulation  ]

“It is evidenced by the great work being done at Corville House by Roscrea people in helping to assist and integrate people seeking a safe home for themselves and their children. They’re not here to take from us – they’re here to join our community and contribute to wider society.”

Mr McCabe told the vigil, attended by more than 60 people, that some want to divide the local community and were using fear over people’s colour and country of origin to try to achieve that goal because they had nothing else to offer in terms of addressing Roscrea’s needs.

“Roscrea’s needs are real and pressing, and so it’s not enough to just shout about it and it is so wrong to scream about it at migrant children. There is work to be done, and the gaps in provision of education, health, transport, for example, must be identified and addressed as a top priority,” he said.

“Camping out and burning braziers outside what is now a home for people seeking safety and freedom from fear helps nobody. It is a form of intimidation, whether aimed at children or, the horrible term ‘men of fighting age’, that betrays our moral compass.

[  ‘Both sides have right’: Asylum seekers living in Roscrea share objectors’ concerns on consultation  ]

“It has achieved nothing. It has served only to harm our community in the eyes of others and to chill its heart. It has divided people, brought hate into the community, and stifled the simple everyday interactions that are the lifeblood of Roscrea.”

Mr McCabe said that Roscrea was now seen as a racist place on social media, which was why the vigil was not just about a moment of silent reflection but also a statement by residents and public representatives in Co Tipperary that anti-migrant sentiments do not reflect the place or its people.

“We are here to show that is not the case. It’s time now for our community to come together, to tackle the real work of improving this town for everyone, and to show that Roscrea can set an example and chart a path for other communities to follow. Today’s vigil is the first step.”
