Explorer Six - 6 Day Tour of Tasmania

Sure it would have been radical to do the hike independently; cheaper yet more daunting, lonely, and stressful and ultimately I would've kept procrastinating and never reached my goal of hiking Cradle Mountain. By booking a tour it made me accountable and I achieved my goal and it feels great!

Tasmania\'s Tarkine & Cradle Mountain Explorer Tour

Tasmania's Tarkine & Cradle Mountain Explorer

We visited some amazing locations, the tour guide was great. I had lots of fun. I did feel that the first day was a bit rushed in the sense that we travelled to 7 different locations and we had 5-10 minutes to take photos after travelling 20-40 minutes then we had to get on the bus to get to the next location. With the exception of the Nut and Narawntapu National Park. I feel it would have been better to just visit 4 or 5 locations on the first day and spend some time at each place. I also would have loved to stay at a lodge/hotel near or in Cradle mountain on the final night to spend more time in the beautiful scenery of cradle mountain.

Optional Extras

Bruny Island Cruise

On your arrival day we recommend to choose an early flight so that you can enjoy most of the day in Tasmania’s wonderful capital city. Check in is at 2pm but you can drop off your luggage any time at the hotel reception.

Hobart is a beautiful city with quaint shops, homely cafe’s and restaurants, and plenty of history to immerse yourself in.

Accommodation:  Travelodge Hobart

You’ll have a full day to discover the beauty of Hobart at your leisure. You can board the hop-on hop-off double decker bus, or visit the Hobart Convict Penitentiary, Cascade Brewery, Whiskey Distillery, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, climb Mt Wellington – a beautiful natural landmark overlooking the city or visit Bruny Island (optional).

Meals:  Breakfast

After breakfast your guide will pick you up from the hotel and head south east to visit the famed, UNESCO World heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site, located at the very tip of the Tasman Peninsula.

Port Arthur is the best preserved and one of the most evocative heritage sites in Australia, a special place with a vivid history. You will have a chance to step back in time and delve into lives of those who lived in one of the harshest facilities. It’s a place of global significance and one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. After an easy walk around the grounds on a guided tour you will enjoy a 30 minute cruise out on the harbour followed by a well-deserved lunch in a café (at own expense).

There are a number of natural attractions and stunning views along the coastal line of the Tasman Peninsula, including Eaglehawk Neck, The Tasman Arch & the Devil’s Kitchen. We will take our time to visit a number of these attractions over the day.

Once we have had our fill of the Tasman, it is just over an hour’s ride to our accommodation in Orford, a holiday township that offers riverside and bayside beauty with amazing views to Maria Island.

Accommodation:  The East Coaster, Orford

Meals:  Breakfast, Dinner

Today every turn unveils a new view to take your breath away. After breakfast, we will continue up the coast to Freycinet National Park and take in the postcard views of the peninsula from the Wineglass Bay lookout. It is about a 2hr return walk with a bit of steep uphill, but it is well worth the effort, as the lookout from the top has to be one of the most spectacular views in Australia.

After our visit to Freycinet National Park, it’s time to relax and enjoy a glass of wine in one of the famous wineries in the area.

Before reaching St Helen’s, the resting point for the evening, we will have our last stop in Bicheno, known for its laid-back lifestyle, idyllic beaches & fishing industry.

Accommodation:  Panorama Hotel, St Helens

The highlights of today’s itinerary is the Bay of Fires with its wonderful combination of unspoiled wilderness and beautiful strand of beaches with perfectly white sand.

The view while strolling around the aptly named Gardens of Binalong Bay is simply stunning: turquoise ocean and a coastline scattered with mammoth boulders of steely blue granite covered in the orange and ochre red lichen. The Bay of Fires lives up to this reputation named by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s ‘Most Beautiful Beaches” and is a place for long leisurely walks and swimming.

After visiting the Bay of Fires area, it’s time to head inland to Sheffield for a change of scenery.

Sheffield is known as “Tasmania’s Town of Murals”. The small, seemingly sleepy town in the doldrums of rural decline was saved in 1980s from oblivion thanks to the initiative to paint large murals on walls around the town. The idea was to depict events and stories from the region’s history and early pioneer days. Nowadays the town has a lively art community and developed into a hub for fine arts and crafts and studio galleries. Supported by the mural-painting festival, the number of murals grow each year and now cover the side of almost every building and structure.

Accommodation: Mountain View Country Inn, Deloraine

Today, we will pack ourselves some lunch, and then head off for a full day exploring one of the most impressive National Parks in Australia. With it’s jagged peaks, lush greenery and abundant wildlife, Cradle Mountain has attracted tourists for all of Tasmania’s history.

The walk around Dove lake is fairly flat, quite easy, and wonderfully combined with some wildlife spotting. For those looking to challenge themselves, you might consider conquering Marion’s lookout where you will earn yourself one of the most spectacular photos of this area (only in good weather conditions and not possible in winter).

After exploring as much of the park as we can, there will be the opportunity to visit Devils @ Cradle – A world class wildlife conservation facility, where you can see Tasmanian Devils and the closely related Spotted-tail and Eastern Quolls. These critters are almost impossible to spot in the wild so it is a great opportunity to see them up close.

For those not interested in seeing the Tassie Devils up close, the alternative is to grab yourself a wine and sit by the fire at the iconic Cradle Mountain Lodge or take a stroll through the Enchanted Forest.

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The fun is not over! Yesterday was all about nature, and today is all about indulgence.

We will make our way to Launceston through the Tamar Valley to check out the region’s famous wineries (1 tasting included) and local producers along with some general sightseeing along the way. Roll into Launceston in the afternoon and check in for our final night in Tasmania.

Accommodation : Hotel Grand Chancellor, Launceston

Meals : Breakfast

The tour finishes after breakfast with a 10am check out. If you are flying out that afternoon /evening, feel free to leave your bags at reception.

There’s plenty of sites to take in around Launceston, we recommend the Cataract Gorge Cruise. You will glide along Launceston’s riverfront and cruise beneath the spectacular sheer cliffs of the Cataract Gorge.

Tasmania, Australia

Small group tours Tasmania, Australia

Explore the sights and history of Tasmania, from the cerulean waters of the east coast, to Cradle Mountain, and the capital city of Hobart. Odyssey offers safe, confident, authentic, escorted small group tours for mature and senior travellers, couples, and solo travelers to Australia. Limited to 15 like minded travellers.

Sitting about 460km below the Australian mainland state of Victoria , (560km from Melbourne) the island of Tasmania is Australia ‘s second smallest, and 6th most populous state or territory. Covering an area the size of Ireland, or similar to Missouri, Tasmania is home to roughly 540,000 people, about 40% of whom reside in the state’s capital Hobart . Tasmania plays host to a climate, and landscape distinct from the rest of Australia, this is due to its position further south towards the Antarctic, its long separation from the mainland and its position in the ‘roaring forties’ wind current. These have all contributed to its distinct flora, fauna, geology, and climate patterns.

Most of the island has a cool oceanic climate, with the mountainous area towards the centre of the island being cooler still, this climate makes the eastern part of the island productive for agricultural use, while the western portion of the island is densely forested, with huge national parks and protected areas that cover a substantial 42% of the island . Known colloquially as ‘ Tassie‘ to Australians, Tasmania is renowned for its rich natural heritage, with places like Cradle Mountain , Lake St Clair , Mount Wellington , or Wineglass Bay being some of the more well known. The island’s latitude also makes it one of the best places on earth to see the aurora australis , or Southern Lights, if you’re lucky enough to catch them.

As for Tasmania‘s cultural heritage, you can find historic world heritage sites such as Port Arthur on one end of the spectrum, or wild and creative museums such as MONA on the other. MONA is the largest privately owned museum in the southern hemisphere and features large exhibits from artists across Australia. In all, a holiday in Tasmania provides a wide range of experiences, with unique natural and cultural heritage that marks it out as distinct from Australia‘s mainland states.

Tasmania‘s earliest history traces back to its Indigenous people , with a history that predates European colonization in the region by around 30,000 years, with Aboriginal settlement on the Australian mainland thought to have begun at least 65,000 years ago – and possibly as early as 125,000 years ago – and gradually moving south. Indigenous people in Tasmania were separated from the mainland some 12,000 years ago when sea levels rose during the thawing of the last ice age. Isolated from the mainland, they developed different languages and cultures that diverged from that of the population on the mainland. Today there are least nine different Aboriginal nations, each with its own language.

The first European contact with Tasmania came in the year 1642, with Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first sighting land on the west coast of the island on the 24th of November 1642. On 1 December, Tasman anchored to the north of Cape Frederick Hendrick. He named the island Van Diemen’s Land in honour Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.

This early exploration of the island , as well as New Zealand , and the surrounding seas, has been honoured in the region’s names, with areas such as the Tasman Sea, and the island of Tasmania itself bearing the explorer’s name. Despite the early discoveries of Tasman, Europeans would not return to the area for another 130 years, with French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne arriving in 1772, and the British arriving a year later. At this time, though it was theorized, there was no solid evidence that Tasmania, was in fact an island. This was eventually confirmed in 1798, with British Captain Matthew Flinders, and explorer George Bass circumnavigating the Australian continent , and passing through the Bass Strait. (The straight was later to be named after the George Bass.)

Colonization started in 1803

Although the islands of the Bass Strait had been used by whalers, and sealers for some time, colonization of the main island did not begin until the year 1803, when a settlement established at Risdon Cove in the Derwent Valley. Only a year later, the settlement relocated to the current location of Hobart, which was blessed with rich reserves of water thanks to the cascades running from kunanyi. Tasmania‘s early settlements were characterised by conflict with the indigenous inhabitants and the extensive use of convict labour, with about 4 of every 10 convicts transported to Australia arriving on the island in its early years.

The continued use of Tasmania as a convict settlement helped create a tremendous gender imbalance on the island, adding to turmoil between the settlers and native population, with convicts and free settlers to abducting Aboriginal women. This, coupled with the increasing strain on the island’s resources, and grazing lands, eventually escalated into violent conflict between the settlers and Indigenous population, in what came to be the most brutal example of settler colonisation in Australia‘s history. As the Aborigines last more and more of their traditional hunting grounds, battles erupted between them and the European settlers. In 1828 martial law was declared by the Lieutenant-Governor Arthur and Aboriginal tribes were forced from their lands at gunpoint. Between 1829 and 1834 many remaining indigenous Tasmanians were resettled on Flinders Island where most of them died of disease or despair.

Van Diemen’s Land

Known in these early years as ‘Van Diemen’s Land’, the island was extremely important to early colonization, with about a third of Australia‘s non-indigenous population residing on the island in 1830, as well as accounting for a full half of cultivated land. The majority of the settlement for agricultural purposes was in the centre of the island and on the east coast. The Van Diemen’s Land Company was also a tremendously influential body at this time, and enjoyed an undisputed monopoly to the entire northwest of the island.

small group escorted tours tasmania

1853, a name change

The transportation of convicts eventually came to an end in the year 1853, and the name of the island was subsequently changed in the year 1856 to Tasmania. The name change came as more and more free settlers made their way to the island, and Tasmania sought to distance itself from its recent history of convict labour. As time progressed and Tasmania came into its own, it became its own fully fledged state, joining with the mainland in federation in 1901 , with the vote to join enjoying the largest margin of any Australian state. In the early years of the 20th century Tasmania suffered something of a depression leading to a lack of development, this in turn led to the retention of many of its fine colonial buildings. Throughout the 20th and 21st century, Tasmania has been shaped by the development of the hydro-electricity sector, and has become an important melting pot from which several of Australia‘s environmental movements have developed. Today it is well known as an eco-tourism destination, as well as for its vibrant arts and culture sector.

Travelling to Tasmania

Tasmania is easily reached from mainland Australia and from further afield. Hobart, the state’s capital, has an international airport, though most fights come in via Melbourne, Sydney or one of the other mainland capitals. Devonport, on the north coast of Tasmania, close to Launceston, Tasmania‘s second city, can also be reached via ferry from Melbourne. A small group tour of Tasmania with Odyssey usually begins in either Hobart or Launceston. A small group tour of Tasmania can offer the senior traveller a rich experience, delving into the state’s incredible natural, and cultural heritage. Travellers to Tasmania are able to enjoy its historic townships, Jurassic era dolerite cliffs, temperate rainforests and bushland, cerulean blue coasts, as well as some of the world’s cleanest air .

Touring Tasmania

For those starting out on a Tasmania tour, a good place to begin would be the state’s capital city, Hobart.

Located on the south-east coast of the island, Hobart is home to some 206,000 people, roughly 40% of Tasmania ‘s population. Hobart has a thriving cultural, and commercial life, and is dotted with cafes and restaurants, as well as museums, markets, art galleries, and more. Visitors to Hobart should be sure to stop by on a Saturday, this is the time when you can catch the famous Salamanca markets , here you can find local craft goods and foods, ranging from carved Tasmanian native woods, to lavender, mountain honey, craft gin, pearls and much much more. While eating out in Hobart you might also want to have lunch or dinner around the famous Elizabeth St Pier, which has incredible fresh seafood, North Hobart is also known as a popular place to eat both lunch and dinner, with a variety of local favourites found in this part of town.

Just outside of Hobart , though always present on the city’s skyline, is Mount Wellington , or ‘Kunanyi’. You can make your way up the mountain to the lookout in about an hour’s drive from town. From the top you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city, the harbour, and at times you can even catch the aurora australis away from the polluting lights of the city below. Another major Hobart attraction is the Museum of Old and New Art, or MONA . Opened in 2011 by professional gambler and philanthropist David Walsh, MONA features large exhibition spaces with brilliant, creative and at times controversial art installations. The best way to get to MONA , since it occupies its own private island, are the Mona Roma ferries, these depart from the Brooke St Pier just next to Salamanca place, where you can also buy entry tickets.

small group escorted tours tasmania

Aside from the activities of the city of Hobart itself, the city is an excellent staging point from which to explore much of the surrounding area.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

It is easy to take a day tour from Hobart to many scenic and historic sites. One of the easiest of these would be Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary . Located near the town of Brighton to the north of Hobart, the wildlife sanctuary is an easy way to see much of Tasmania ‘s unique wildlife up close and personal. This can also be an excellent opportunity to meet the island’s famous tassie devil , which can be rather elusive in the wild. To the south of the city, you might want to take a day trip to Huonville and the Huon Valley. This area is a popular region for wineries, as well as craft ciders, mead, liqueurs, whisky and gin. While in Huonville you can stop by at Willie Smith’s Apple Shed for a hearty lunch, tasting palette of ciders, and sometimes even local musicians. Just over an hour west of Hobart, you can also visit Mt. Field National Park, here you can find some incredible walking tracks through the the Tasmanian wilderness, as well as some truly special waterfalls like Russell Falls , or Horseshoe Falls . Here the spectacular scenery is reminiscent of a Tolkien novel.

small group escorted tours tasmania

Bruny island

Off the southeast coast of Tasmania, and another popular day trip from Hobart is Bruny Island . Bruny Island is famous for its pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, fresh seafood, and local wildlife. Travellers to Bruny often find one of the best spots for sightseeing on the island is the narrow isthmus connecting north, and south Bruny, known locally as ‘the neck’. Another way to see Bruny Island is on a cruise, where you can oft spot seals and dolphins around the islands coastline, on the land you can also find a unique Bruny Island species of wallaby, which due to generations of mutation have snowy white fur.

On South Bruny you can also take a Bruny Island Lighthouse tour, with the historic Cape Bruny Lighthouse being one of the oldest continually operating in the country’s history. Heading east from Hobart around the coast to the Tasman Peninsula, is Port Arthur . Port Arthur is a World Heritage listed area , with its history harkening back to the colonial era as one of the most notorious and brutal penal colonies in Australian history. The Port Arthur historic site’s colonial history is brought into revealing, and stark contrast, with the site’s museums and tours giving visitors insight into what day to day life was like for some of Australia‘s earliest European residents. Port Arthur is also a good jumping off point for a wildlife cruise around the coastline of the Tasman National Park, along the ride you can find animals such as bottlenose dolphins, and Australian fur seals in abundance, as well as a huge variety of seabirds such as cormorants and sea-eagles.

Day Trip to Richmond and new Norfolk

From Hobart it is also possible to take a day trip to historic townships such as Richmond and New Norfolk. These towns were settled early in the colony’s history and still retain much of their early 19th century architecture. Richmond, on the Coal River, with its historic 1823 convict built bridge, is a particularly popular spot for a day trip. The New Norfolk population was dramatically increased when the first convict settlement on Norfolk Island was closed, and the inhabitants resettled in Tasmania, in 1807. One of Australia‘s oldest hotels, The Brush Inn, has been trading in the same building in New Norfolk since 1825.

Exploring the East coast of Tasmania

Leaving Hobart behind, a journey heading up Tasmania ‘s east coast is a fantastic way to see how the landscape changes as you pass through forests, mountains, and verdant plains along your trip . One of the first highlights along this route would have to be Wineglass Bay, located on the Freycinet Peninsula . This is a place famous for its pristine beaches, blue waters and incredible abundance of wildlife and Wineglass Bay is worth at least a whole day to do it proper justice.

For those on a walking tour , heading south from Coles Bay through the national park is a great way to get to Wineglass Bay Beach. Along the way be sure to stop at the Wineglass Bay lookout , here you’ll get a great view of the sandy beaches , rugged coastline, and see the distinctive U-shape the bay is famous for. Another place to look out for while journeying up the east coast is the seaside town of Bicheno . Bicheno is famous for its large naturally occurring blowhole, which launches out huge jets of water into the air as the tide fluctuates, making for a great photo opportunity, it’s also a good lunch spot for fresh seafood and a break from the road.

Another Tasmanian city hub, though smaller than the capital Hobart, is Launceston . Located in the island’s Tamar valley region, Launceston has just under half the population of Hobart, making it Tasmania ‘s second largest city. Launceston is known for its colonial, and Victorian style architecture dating back to the earliest days of settlement, and has one of the best preserved and oldest cityscapes in Australia. Launceston is another great launching pad for a tour of the surrounding region, or for connecting transport heading further afield. One example of this is Flinders Island, which you can make your way to after a short, light aircraft flight from Launceston . Flinders Island is located off the northeast coast of Tasmania, and is the largest in the Furneaux group of islands, it is known for its natural beauty, walking tracks, and its tragic colonial history. With this in mind, the layout of Flinders Island, is ideal for a walking tour, with Odyssey, visiting nearly every major site on the island along our tour.

Flinders Island Killiecrankie Beach

Cradle Mountain- World Heritage site

Heading west out of Launceston, eventually you’ll come upon one of Tasmania ‘s most notable attractions, the UNESCO world heritage listed Cradle Mountain . The Cradle Mountain National Park is the highlight of any wilderness tour of Tasmania , with its natural beauty being special even in a place so naturally gifted as Tasmania. The area is dotted with wilderness walks and walking trails necessary to properly explore what the national park has to offer. One of the most popular spots is Dove lake , which lies at the centre of the park with the mountain looming behind, and is the perfect spot for a photo opportunity. The national park is also incredibly abundant in wildlife , and you might find yourself literally tripping over wombats, who have become quite friendly and unafraid of visiting humans. You should also keep an eye out for the island’s famous tassie devil, which could make an appearance.

Dove Lake

Continuing north, a good place to head to is Stanley , which with its incredibly clean air, and seaside charm, is another great base from which to explore Tasmania ‘s northwest region.

Stanley Tasmania

Along your way to Stanley you may want to stop by the Table Cape, which has one of Tasmania ‘s largest tulip farms , and is a visually stunning stop for any ‘budding’ horticulturalist. The town of Stanley itself is notable for a number of reasons, the first of these is its massive dormant volcano, known locally as ‘the nut’. This is a great lookout from which to take in the surrounding seas and countryside, and you can even take a chairlift to the top.

The town is also famous for its historic buildings, some of which date back to the time of the Van Diemen’s Land Company. Lastly the air around Stanley , and places in northwest Tasmania such as Cape Grim has been measured as amongst the cleanest in the world . At first this may not sound like much to boast about, but in a world characterized by air pollution in the larger cities where many of us live, the effect of fresh, clean air as its supposed to be, is really something of an unexpected marvel.

Near Stanley , you may also want to take a day trip through the Tarkine rainforest , which, as one of the only temperate rainforests in the world, is definitely something to make time for on a tour to Tasmania . The Tarkine is one of Australia ‘s great untamed wild places, with old growth that dates back many hundreds of years. It is home to many of Tasmania ‘s native trees and endangered species, and is a great place to experience one of the few remaining wild places on our planet.

The West coast Highway to Strahan and the Gordon river.

Heading further down along the west coast , you’ll find numerous national parks , small towns like Strahan , and rivers such as the Gordon River and Franklin River . The west coast is a great way to see Tasmania ‘s wilderness , that captures the island’s Gondwana heritage.

West Coast highway Tas

Rounding the west coast route back to Hobart, you’ll come across Lake St Clair , listed along with Cradle Mountain as a UNESCO world heritage site. Lake St Clair is another natural gem to see on a wilderness tour of Tasmania. Lying in a deep basin formed by glaciation over millions of years, Lake St Clair is known for its crystal clear, and incredibly still water. Known as leeawuleena, or ‘Sleeping Water’ in the indigenous language, the huge lake is so calm it reflects the surrounding area, and sky above like an enormous mirror, one which is particularly impressive during the golden hour around sunrise or sunset. One of the best ways to experience areas such as Lake St Clair and Cradle Mountain is with a small group tour. Odyssey specialises in this kind of tour, offering an engaged and intimate tour of Tasmania, ideal for seniors, solo travellers , and couples heading to Australia and Tasmania.

Indigenous Australians settled via a land bridge on the continent from Southeast Asia at least 85,000 years before the first Europeans from Portugal and Spain began exploration in the 17th century. For senior and mature travellers, a small group tour of Australia is a unique experience.

The Festival of Voices is Tasmania’s largest singing festival, with singers and vocal artists flocking to Hobart for two weeks in July for workshops, performances and concerts. Festivale in Febraury brings together Tasmania’s loves for eating, drinking and performing, with over 70 stalls serving food and drink alongside live music and dance performances. Cygnet Folk Festival is dedicated to folk music and acts, with the town of Cygnet playing host to 3 days worth of performances and workshops on niche activities such as banjo playing and folk dancing.

Every Saturday Morning the Hobart Salamanca Markets are something you won’t want to miss, with a delicious and beautiful assortment of foods, drinks, and local goods.

Another annual event unique to Hobart is the ‘Dark Mofo’ festival. Not for the faint of heart, though beloved in Hobart, this controversial mid-winter festival includes displays of performance art, live music, an annual nude swim and gothic banquet.

Eating & Drinking

Tasmania is famed for its fresh, organic produce, and has food options galore. Seafood is abundant, with fresh salmon, oysters, and wild abalone being particular highlights of Tasmanian seafood. The rich soil of Tasmania has meant the Apple Isle has some of Australia’s finest produce, including wagyu beef, Flinders Island lamb, olive oil and black truffles. Dairy produce is a big part of Tasmanian food, with many varieties of cheese produced including blue cheese, brie, camembert, and even experimental varieties such as wasabi cheddar.

Besides fine food, Tasmania also produces many varieties of beer, wine and spirits. Many local producers of cider, whisky and gin have cropped up across the island, while Tasmania is also home to some of Australia’s leading cool climate wines. If you’re looking to have drink during your travels, be sure to drop by one of the many boutique breweries, distilleries and wineries that dot the island.

Health & Safety

Generally speaking, Tasmania is safe to travel around in, though always exercise common sense while travelling.

Electricity Supply

Whenever you travel on your holidays for solo travellers over 60 Australia , it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Australia runs at 230V and 50Hz. Australia uses the Type I electric plug, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

It all worked out very well - as usual!

It was my first time with Odyssey & I enjoyed it very much

Convicts and Emigrants in Early Tasmania | Summer School in Hobart, Tasmania

David is extremely knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. He wasn't rigid with the itinerary (times) as he wanted all the participants to enjoy and see what interested them the most. He did an excellent job.

Morning teas and lunches were superb.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole program

Our leader, David Daintree, did a fantastic job. He was able to impart his knowledge and keep an easy-going vibe to the course. Most enjoyable. The two guest speakers were great. As I was reading Alison Alexander's book I was especially pleased to meet her and hear her talk on convicts in Tasmania.

Very knowledgeable coach drivers, courteous and friendly (as were they all) but Stuart bent over backwards to show us various landmarks around Hobart on our last day.

Day 1 Welcome to Hobart

Tour Melbourne Image

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart may be small in size, but it’s big in attractions, as you’ll discover this afternoon. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering endless vistas over Australia’s southernmost city. View the charming Georgian cottages of Battery Point and convict built warehouses along Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets. Gaze over boats at Constitution Dock - this is where yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world. Tonight, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 Hobart - Strahan

Western Tasmania is like nature amplified, a place where the wilderness rules and people are few and far between. Visiting Mount Field National Park is a humbling experience, not only for the fact it’s part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, but also because it’s home to some of the tallest eucalypts and flowering plants on Earth. Wander amid these giants to reach Russell Falls – take a deep breath; you’re officially on holiday. Records continue to be broken at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater Lake in Australia, before you arrive in Strahan, gateway to World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Day 3 Strahan

The inky waters of the Gordon River and Macquarie Harbour – given their colour by amber button-grass tannins – are as eery as they are beautiful, the mirror-like surface only broken by your Gordon River chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island. It’s hard to reconcile the beauty of this part of the state with its grim history as a penal colony; a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building. Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500-year-old majestic trees. Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals.

Day 4 Strahan - Cradle Mountain - Burnie

Today your journey reaches new heights – quite literally with a visit to the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you explore Dove Lake on your Cradle Mountain tour, the wild alpine moorlands here a natural magnet for lovers of the wilderness. The spectacular and pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain is home to the mysterious and secretive Tasmanian Devil. You’ll love the next adventure today, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. A Day Keeper at Devils @ Cradle will lead you through the sanctuary and provide you with a thorough insight into its operation. When joining this tour you will be directly supporting these animals and threatened species conservation. Leave the Central Highlands after an uplifting day and head towards the scenic north-west coast for your overnight stay.

Day 5 Burnie - Launceston

Table Cape is by far Wynyard's most remarkable natural wonder, at 180 metres high, 'The Cape' - as locals refer to it - offers spectacular views of Tasmania's coastline. As you drive to the top of the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano you'll reach Table Cape lookout where, on a clear day, you can see mountain ranges over 175 kilometres away. If there’s a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we’re yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal – there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall. Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area’s rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses – everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue. For lovers of sweeter delights, why not treat yourself to a delicious local made ice cream?

Day 6 Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be surrounded by nature. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, or perhaps taking a cruise along the river. The choice is yours.

Day 7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

Day 8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time. Your last stop for the day is to the shores of the Derwent River where local palawa will welcome you to country and show off some local bush tucker.

Day 9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

Day 10 Farewell from Hobart

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve done it in 10 days. What a wild ride.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Small Group Tours

Small Group Tours

The classic small group tours provide a 'highlights' of Tasmania tour for a group of up to 12 or so likeminded guests with tours ranging in duration from 4 to 8 days, staying in comfortable accommodation with a dedicated vehicle and guide.  There are regular departures as well as special interest departures for those with interests more geared towards wildlife and national parks.

Those more inclined to adventure and getting off the beaten track should consider one of the magnificent small group walking tours, or perhaps even a multi day kayaking tour.

Tasmania is Australia's walking state and in fact is probably one of the greatest walking destinations in the world with a climate, landscape and diversity that lends itself perfectly to exploration by foot.

The small group walking tours in Tasmania are some of the best experiences of their kind in the world.

Think award-winning architect-styled eco lodges cantilevered from granite, orange lichen-stained cliffs or secreted in the sun-dappled bush tucked behind endless wild beaches pounded by turquoise seas, the playground for mega pods of dolphin, and the passage for whales on their trip north; imagine dining by candle and starlight in decadent standing camps protected by parrot-filled forest canopies, finished off with a night in a historic homestead with a roaring log fire, a warm bath the reward for a day’s hike; always, no matter how remote you seem to be, a convivial dinner of gourmet food washed down with some of the crispest, smoothest wines in the New World, made from grapes that have been allowed to ripen at their leisure in the long, balmy Tasmanian autumn.

With nearly fifty per cent of the island protected by World Heritage or National Park status, vast swathes of land both impenetrable and uninhabited by people, the power of nature that dominates a land lying forty degrees south in the Great Southern Ocean is not to be understated, and of course unguided walkers need to keep their wits about them - which is why there has been such a proliferation of guided short and long walks developed in the last few years.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that walking in Tassie is only for the young and super fit. Far from it. In recent decades the appeal of walking, particularly among the older generation has given birth to a new style of walking holiday that puts comfort, even luxury, and experience at equal first in the list of criteria.

There are a huge range of easily accessible short walks for those who are unwilling or unable to embark on a longer journey by foot.  For those who want to experience all Tasmania's top walking spots under the guidance of an expert, Premier Travel Tasmania has the perfect solution -  seven day guided walking tour that combines the comfort of travel by luxury vehicle and blissful accommodation with the very best day walks.

But for those who want to see the world from a different perspective, there are several world-class multi-day walks in Tasmania that take rambling to a new level of sophistication.

With always a minimum of two knowledgeable guides for every group of just eight of ten in a group, the pace is dictated by the slowest walker, with plenty of opportunity for the faster paced walkers to stretch themselves. Sometimes the walking can be less taxing than choosing which wine to have with your sautéed scallops. On Tasmania’s walks your soul will be as grateful as your taste buds. The simple process of putting one foot in front of the other will lead you on a path through magnificent scenery to extraordinary natural highs, both literally and figuratively. To say Tasmania’s walks can bring with them life-changing experiences is honestly not an understatement.

One of Tasmania’s top walks, the Maria Island Walk, describes itself with justification as four days that last a lifetime. Another promises a life changing experience or your money back. What is guaranteed is that you will see and learn things that will change your view on the world forever, and it is highly likely that you will leave Tasmania having made friends for life. Walking is perhaps the world’s first social network. Best of all, in Tasmania, for the most part you are far more likely to come face to face with Tasmania’s weird and wonderful wildlife than another human being, apart from your fellow walkers.

So, for a true immersion into Tasmania’s magical wilderness, eschew the hire car, at least for a day or two, longer if you can, and make sure you pack a pair of comfortable walking boots.  Follow in the footsteps of the dinosaurs, delving deep into 60 million year old rainforests, along stunning sea cliffs and down to white sand deserted beaches, inaccessible other than by foot. You won’t regret a single step of the journey. Walk once in Tassie and you will almost certainly return to walk here again.

The Freycinet Experience

Arguably the only way to explore the iconic Freycinet Peninsula, this three night walk covers the length of the peninsula and its national park on Tasmania’s East Coast, taking walkers into parts that no one else is permitted to enter. It culminates in one of Tasmania’s most remarkable vistas – Wineglass Bay - against a back drop of the Hazards Mountains. You walk out each day from your base, the art and antique filled Friendly Beaches Lodge, to return to the nightly luxury of comfortable beds and a sumptuous dinner by a log fire. The solar powered lodge is one of those rare gems, tucked away in the bush on one of the most stunning beaches you will ever set foot on.

The Maria Island Walk

One of Australia’s most decorated tourism experiences, this four-day walk explores the breath-taking landscape of the east coast island national park with its deep-etched convict history. Walk among the fecund wildlife with light packs, on gentle tracks, staying at two forest camps with comfortable beds, and outstanding food and wine, rewarded by a final night in the restored historic Bernacchi House. With rich aboriginal history, a penal settlement that predates Port Arthur and an extraordinary density of wildlife (including all Tasmania’s endemic birds) this is the walk for animal lovers. The recent release of wild Tasmanian devils has added a new dimension.

Bay of Fires Lodge Walk

Explore the breathtaking coastline known as the Bay of Fires, so-named by the early sea-farers who saw the first settlers’ fires burning on the shore. Stay in the Bay of Fires Lodge, whose minimalist design probably put Tasmania’s walking on the grown-up map when it opened in 1998. Named by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top 10 spots to visit in 2009, this remote landscape in Tasmania’s north east, littered with Aboriginal middens, is the passage from one world to another, a place unchanged by time. Two nights are spent in the Lodge, and one night is spent in the Forester Beach Camp.

Cradle Mountain Huts Walk

This six day, 40 mile guided walk follows the iconic ten day Overland Track – possibly the world’s greatest multi day walk - through Tasmania’s glacial and mountainous World Heritage area from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair.  Those with moderate to good fitness will walk through land only usually accessible to the hardiest thanks to the most ecologically sustainable private huts, warm showers, good meals and an experience that makes the bucket list in spade loads.

The Bruny Island Long Weekend

More of a gourmet and wildlife extravaganza with a bit of walking thrown in – or at least enough to make you feel suitably active. The camp is of the highest standard, and the food and wine are what you would expect from an island located off an island that has its very own natural larder of wines, cheeses, oysters and a posse of makers poised to share it with you. Access to and from Bruny Island, a national park in its own right with some of the highest cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere is normally an hour’s drive from Hobart and a short ferry ride, but here you do it in style, with a private boat to and from the island from Hobart.

Arrive today and travel into Hobart city at your leisure. Your accommodation for tonight is booked and waiting at the elegant, 4-star Movenpick Hotel centrally located and within walking distance of the city’s restaurant and shopping areas.

Pick up from the Movenpick Hotel to begin the fully guided portion of our 5-day package. Explore the Hobart waterfront area before heading to the summit of Mt Wellington (1270m) boasting spectacular panoramic views in every direction.

Further exploration through town sees us take in the historic Female Factory & Cascade Brewery while viewing many of Australia’s oldest convict-built structures. Heading east we meander into the Coal River Valley, one of Tasmania’s premier wine regions. Naturally, we will lunch at a lovely, family-operated winery, sampling some of Tassie’s best wine & local produce before continuing on to the historic township of Richmond. We will see the beautiful stone arch construction of the Richmond Bridge, built by the convicts in 1823 this is Australia’s oldest bridge still in operation. Much to everyone’s delight we stop at the boutique Federation Chocolate factory just outside Richmond for some sampling of fresh, handmade chocolates. The flavours change depending on the season and the produce available!

It’s then on to the Tasman Peninsula for our first taste of the east coast. The Tasman National Park boasts towering sea cliffs and a wealth of cultural history as we venture south. A beautiful lookout point over Pirates Bay provides the ideal location for a scenic, mid-afternoon tea/coffee break. Learn about Eaglehawk Neck – the site of the infamous Dogline – as we cross onto the Tasman Peninsula.

We then explore some of nature’s true wonders with short, scenic walks at Tasman’s Arch & Devils Kitchen. Continuing on we squeeze in a stop at the colourful Port Arthur Lavender Farm before overnighting right on the cusp of the Port Arthur World Heritage Historic Site.

Accommodation: Port Arthur Motor Inn or similar

Our day begins with a 3-hour fully guided tour around the Port Arthur Historic Site. Explore many of the original buildings as we learn about the early convicts and the role they played in Tasmania’s history. Learn about Point Puer (the juvenile boys prison), the Isle of the Dead graveyard and the Port Arthur timber industry while enjoying a short, scenic harbour cruise to view the site as incoming convicts would have.

Next, we leave the Tasman Peninsular for our journey up the very east coast of the island. At Raspins Beach we view the imposing Maria Island off the coast of Orford before stopping to see the unique convict-built Spikey Bridge and the captivating coastline at Spikey Beach over tea, coffee & biscuits.

Next up is Swansea – a beautiful East Coast town – and the Great Oyster Bay area. Arriving in Bicheno for our evening accommodation we will squeeze in one last feel-good activity by spotting the cute little Fairy Penguins arriving ashore right in Bicheno township.

Accommodation: Beachfront Bicheno or similar

Start the day at the amazing Blow Hole on the rocky coastline of Bicheno. Visit the multi-award-winning East Coast Nature World wildlife park to see many of our native animals and in particular – the feeding of the iconic Tasmanian Devil. Learn about this amazing animal and its recent struggle for survival. Pat wombats and hand-feed kangaroos, geese and ducks – this is a wonderful and interactive morning.

Enjoy travelling Tasmania’s most scenic coastal road with breathtaking views of the east coast en route to one of Tasmania’s premier attractions – the Bay of Fires. At Binalong Bay we will stroll along the pure white sandy beaches and snap photos of possibly the most colourful spot on the island. Visit a working oyster farm, see their farming techniques and enjoy the freshest possible oysters. In the afternoon we proceed towards Launceston stopping at Pyengana, the award-winning cheese factory and dairy.

We then twist our way through an ancient Myrtle Rainforest and cross the trail of the dragon, an old mining area centred around the town of Derby. The carved memorial trees at Legerwood are one of Australia’s most unique & tasteful memorial sites, this will be our tea & coffee break for today.

Arrive in Launceston CBD tonight at approximately 6 pm for the final evening our your 5 Day package at a perfectly located inner city hotel.

My wife and I, based in Singapore, have been to all the major cities in Australia, and Tasmania has long been on our bucket list. We jumped at the opportunity to visit when Australia relaxed its travel restrictions. We opted for the Western Wilderness tour starting from Launceston. The tour was excellent in every respect—- comfortable ride, congenial company, and superb driving and commentary by Dean, our ever-cheerful guide. We never felt rushed, and still covered an amazing diversity of places in 3 full days. Dean’s knowledge of the flora and fauna was remarkable, as were his illuminating comments on “The Wall”. The accommodations were comfortable, the lunch and dinner venues were well chosen; not forgetting the afternoon coffee/tea breaks orchestrated by Dean. Jaytara, Singapore
