Star Trek: Bridge Crew has been suddenly delisted

But it's still available on the Ubisoft website.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Ubisoft 's virtual reality take on Star Trek has been delisted on Steam and the Oculus Store. Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a cooperative VR game that tasks players with collaborating on the upkeep of the Enterprise. James had a lot of fun with it back in 2017, and while it was definitely built for VR headsets, a non-VR edition did eventually release.

But if you head over to the Steam page now, a notice warns that "at the request of the publisher, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is no longer available for sale on Steam." Meanwhile, the game is only available to wishlist on the Oculus Store . There is, at the time of writing, one way to purchase Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and that's via the Ubisoft webstore . You'll need to buy it via browser, though, because it's unavailable on the Ubisoft desktop app.

Often when a game is delisted, the publisher offers forewarning and sometimes even a drastic discount, but not in this instance. I've reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the delisting, though given it's a Star Trek game, it's probably due to a license expiry.

That doesn't rule out its return, though, and there's every possibility the delisting will be brief. One recent example of a temporary delisting was the LEGO Lord of the Rings games . Activision 's fairly average Deadpool game also has a history of being intermittently unavailable.

It'd be a real shame if Bridge Crew doesn't return in some form, because it ticks a lot of roleplaying boxes for long time Star Trek fans. "During my four hour session with Star Trek: Bridge Crew, there wasn’t any mind-bending discovery or unbounding optimism and no kissing (damn!)," James wrote in 2017 ahead of the game's launch. "There was a lot of goofing off and weird finger gestures and panicked yelling. We’re not professional space pilots with cool accents and trim jumpsuits, but Bridge Crew makes me want to be one."

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is Being Delisted

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is being removed from online stores by Ubisoft, leaving gamers with little time to secure a copy of the memorable VR game.

When Star Trek: Bridge Crew was released for PC and PS4 in 2017, it offered a unique virtual reality experience for Star Trek fans and VR enthusiasts alike. Developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Star Trek: Bridge Crew was named among the top 50 games of 2017 by multiple media outlets, nominated for several awards including Best VR Game at both the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards. Unfortunately, Star Trek: Bridge Crew could be lost to history despite its success, with reports circulating that the game is being delisted from all major game stores.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is currently available on the PlayStation Store for a discounted price, though this appears to be region-specific, with most Western territories still eligible. PC gamers can still purchase the title through Ubisoft’s official store. Meanwhile, the game is no longer available to purchase on Steam or the Oculus stores, having already been delisted, though the product pages are still visible. The DLC for Star Trek: Bridge Crew is also unavailable.

RELATED: Simon Pegg Has Unfortunate Update For Star Trek Fans

The cause of the delisting is rumored to be due to licensing issues. According to reports from Delisted Games, Ubisoft has a licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios that could be set to expire. Ubisoft has developed games with licenses from CBS Consumer Products in the past, including an NCIS video game from 2011 which was also eventually delisted.

Another possible cause could be the age of the game. With the release of new VR headsets, the PS5, and news that the PlayStation VR 2 is in development , Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a last-gen experience that has arguably reached its shelf life—at least from a business perspective. Developers have offered lackluster support for the game in recent years, with players complaining of bugs and other issues.

For fans of Star Trek: Bridge Crew , a memorable part of the game will be the multiplayer functionality. Up to four players can play together in co-op mode, working together as a crew to complete missions at the helm of the USS Aegis. It's a great VR game to play with friends , but it's also possible to form random crews. This can lead to unpredictable and amusing interactions with players who often don't take their role too seriously. Those wanting to relive this unique VR experience will have to act quickly to secure a copy of the game, which is expected to be fully delisted within days. Alternatively, physical copies of Star Trek: Bridge Crew are available in stores, but they might not be around for long.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is currently available for PC and PS4 at select retailers.

‘Star Trek: Bridge Crew’ Delisted from Steam, Quest & Rift Store

He's dead, Jim.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew,  Ubisoft’s co-op space battle sim, has been removed from Steam and the Oculus Store in ostensible preparation for the game’s complete shutdown.

Bridge Crew was an early success for Ubisoft when it first launched on Oculus Rift, SteamVR and PSVR back in 2017, offering some innovative group gameplay that put you and three others aboard the bridge of a Constitution-class starship for coop battle maneuvers against the Klingon Empire.

On Friday, Ubisoft began pulling the plug on  Bridge Crew,  delisting the game from Steam and the Oculus Store for both Quest and Rift. Delisted Games  maintains this was likely due to an expired licensing agreement between Ubisoft and Star Trek IP-holder ViacomCBS.

star trek bridge crew 2022

The studio is still selling Bridge Crew  for both PC and PSVR direct from Ubisoft , as well as via the PlayStation Store for PSVR  for a discounted price of $10. That sale goes until February 17th, and we expect it will be gone from the PlayStation Store thereafter.

If you’re just now considering  Star Trek: Bridge Crew, there’s really no telling when Ubisoft will pull the plug on multiplayer servers, as the company is staying mum for now. In the meanwhile we’d paste a giant ‘BUYER BEWARE’, and that’s even after giving it a resounding [9/10] in our review back when the game first launched.

Despite making it available for non-VR players, releasing the  Next Generation DLC in 2018, and eventually bringing the whole experience to the Quest platform, Ubisoft has been mostly hands-off with Star Trek: Bridge Crew beyond its initial hype phase back in 2017.

This latchkey attitude with updates undoubtedly played into the game’s demise, but the argument can be made that it might have been too soon in VR’s lifecycle for such a specific style of multiplayer game. Sure, the game can be played solo, or with a partial cadre complimented with AI substitutes, but it ultimately excelled when played with a full crew. And yet,  Bridge Crew  never seemed to garner the sort of vibrant userbase it needed to ensure instant access to its drop-in style, procedurally-generated game sessions.

According to  third-party Steam user activity , it only managed a max of 846 users at launch on Steam, going down to a mere 111 two months later. When the game launched on Quest in 2019 (including cross-play), it only managed to attract 533 Steam users concurrently. That’s of course not accounting for PSVR or Oculus numbers, but it’s a telling sign that Bridge Crew  was not the VR success Ubisoft was hoping for.

There was some other writing on the wall at the time. Only a few months after launch, Ubisoft announced it was pulling its IBM Watson-driven voice commands, which allowed users to go hands-free when playing with an AI crew. In response to community outrage Ubisoft  extended support through 2018 , but later phased out voice commands in all versions of the game.

There’s not much else to say about Star Trek: Bridge Crew.  Ubisoft has released and subsequently abandoned more built-for-VR games than any other traditional ‘AAA’ developer out there, treating them more like one-off probes into uncharted space. Although similarly devoid of intelligent life, all of its VR multiplayer games are still on sale:  Eagle Flight,   Werewolves Within,   Space Junkies,  making Bridge Crew  the first—and most successful—of the bunch to get the axe.

Will single player still work though?

I’m wondering about this myself. I guess I’ll have to finish playing through it ASAP.

Why wouldn’t it? Otherwise I’ll have to look out for some pirated patch..

yeah, you can always trust the pirates, unlike the guys that took our money and run (3 years later but still).

Not defending the pirates that do that sort of thing. But there’s several sites on the net where hackers/pirates patch abandonware games to run once the servers have been deactivated. It’s a nice service for the fan community and they don’t charge anything for them.

I’m a developer myself, I can pay for the software I need and never use pirated software, but I’m so feed up with ubisoft bugs and shitty customer support that I would not buy a game from them again. 3 games I bought, 3 piles of bugs with no support. So yeah, I would be happy to at least be able to play this one that I paid for using a hacked patch…

iirc you log in before reaching the main menu and the voice command system is cloud-based so it wouldn’t be that surprising, but it’s something that could be tested right now just by switching off WiFi before loading the game.

Unless Ubi and Valve do what Samsung and Farcebook with to the GearVR community… literally turning off their hardware, and “voiding out” every purchase (leaving unusable hardware)… which was unforgiveable and frankly ILLEGAL, mind you… it ought to.

Of course, once ONE company has gotten away with removing purchased content, you know that everyone else will follow suit shortly. Hell, Valve is “turning off” access to Steam for anyone still running Win7 (not merely not allowing future games to be run, or so on… but literally “turning off” access to anyone still on that platform, which in some cases is the ONLY way to get certain games still sold on Steam to run!)

So… while I would never encourage anyone to “take to the high seas,” if you DO have a legal license to run this software, I’d encourage you to “take a snapshot” of the current state of your installation (save it to a writeable DVD or the like?) which, in the future, you’ll be able to use… ummm… supposedly “iffy” (but far less “iffy” than having a company you bought a product from take that product away from you!) means to get that to work.

It’s not all that hard, really… when Valve turned off access to WinXP, and I still have a machine that runs that (to keep a few things that, again, ONLY run on XP still functioning!), I simply “found a way” to run those Steam programs without… ya know… actually having steam running (as it no longer will, of course).

So, something to bear in mind.

Personally, what I’d LOVE to see would be something along the lines of what’s happened with, say, “Myth II – Soulblighter,” where there are fan-updated versions still getting updates and improvements to this day.

One thing that “Bridge Crew” never really allowed for… unless I missed something pretty major… was the ability to run over a LAN. THAT would be something pretty major, and extremely “value-added.”

Imagine if you could set up in your living room… put chairs in all the right places, or close to them… and then all go into VR, where you could actually hear the real people in the real room around you, talking to you, and you to them… not “over your headset” but literally through the air in the room… but still, in VR, seeing the bridge of a starship.

THAT is something that the makers of “Bridge Crew” screwed up by not providing.

There is something a bit along those lines, apart from “Bridge Crew,” available (or at least it used to be, I haven’t tried it recently). It’s called “Artemis – Starship Bridge Simulator.”

It’s not designed for VR (but I’d swear I heard that they were going to try implementing that). Instead, it’s designed for real-time, all-in-the-same-room roleplaying.

It brings what “Bridge Crew” failed to bring… and I was really hoping that “Bridge Crew” would eventually become more than it was, and take on that “real world get-together play” role that Artemis seems to be the only real alternative for these days.

Check Artemis out. It’s plenty of fun… not “technically” Star Trek, but close enough, I think.

A tragedy. It was an excellent game and experience. It should also be used as a template for future game and experience opportunities.

Ohhh come on! The only game out there that the entire family (3 gen) can play- at the same time, across platforms. Figures.

if you didn’t played it in 3 years you would never play it

Sorry, what exactly do you mean? Clearly- I have played it… As have all of my family members, and everyone else I know with a quest/quest 2/psvr. Also, sometimes, it takes time for word to get around for the less-that-mega-hits. It’s a great Sim-could it be better? Of course! Everything… Literally, everything, is a work-in-progress :)

I just started playing it this month after buying it in 2017. I had other games I was more invested in until now and finally was able to get my friends on board. I do wish I played it when voice commands were a thing though.

Hi Kelley, please check out Spaceteam VR – it can be played cross-platform (PC + Quest VR) as well as with mobile devices. We also have a PSVR and 2D version coming soon!

Hey! Sorry I missed your post earlier… Definitely going to check this is out – thank you!

They are saying they didnt have many users, lol it didnt work for ages, it wasnt possible to connect.

Yep – I tried many times and gave up – I’m amazed that a company like Ubisoft would release such a poor product that obviously had not been tested enough, and when people started complaining it wasn’t working they should have actually done something about it.

I tried it again tonight, got an error trying to get in then a different one. Then i managed to get in but no people, i think due to the error but not sure. It was left a mess lol.

It used to work — likely there was something like a new server issue they never bothered to investigate.

I am a Star Trek fan, and they could have done so much more with it. Goodbye and good riddance.

It’s this sort of attitude which ensures all future Star Trek games will be mobile quality.

When you complain they didn’t do enough, while they invested millions into a leading IP for an unproven tech, while mainly outlets praise it – the issue is your expectations.

The issue is game bugs that prevented many players and MOST groups of friends to play it. If you want to play alone and mp and you are lucky it works for you then fine, what’s the purpose of this if 2 of 3 friends I play vr with can’t play it due to microphone issues? The game could have been great, if it was maintaned I can asure it would have sold A LOT more, since don’t buy it and refunded are the most common things I hear about this game on VR forums, both because of this bug.

I’m also a Star Trek fan, and I really liked the single player game. So for me it’s certainly not ‘good riddance’.

I believe I understand where this is coming from. The last thing any Star Trek fan wants is for a publisher/developer to take over the license and prevent other iterations from existing, then reduce support of the game to almost nothing.

We don’t have a shortage of Star Trek fans. We do have a shortage of Star Trek VR games. This game had some flashes of presence in the Star Trek universe. However, there were so many horrible design decisions made with it. Lean too far and you get a black screen. Exploration is a major part of Star Trek, and these fools put players in a cage.

Content was limited to one DLC release and the Quest ended game stability. Anyone who has played the game for a while knows this issue intimately. From what I’ve heard, the license was no longer theirs to develop with at some point.

I am forced to agree that a game that cannot move forward, yet impair other games from being developed is a good thing to be rid of. The best thing about this game was the community.

I tried with different friends about five times and the multiplayer game seemed to be a broken product that should never have been released in the state it was – I never successfully got to play the game with other people.

I owned it, but never actually played it.

I never played the multiplayer part, and these days you should be able to get it fairly cheap, I bought it a long time ago already with all the DLC for 15 euro’s total. I think it’s really worth anything below that for the single player version only. Only thing I always missed was being able to actually walk around the bridge/ship.

it always hilarious when a dead game get taken down and half the community find a new passion on how good it was

I own the game I’ve had t since 2018 it’s a great game sadly I’ve always had issues finding people to play with

That’s sad, just when Quest 2 is booming and my IRL friends are finally getting into VR ☹️

Never heard of it before.

I quite enjoyed playing around with it on my own, but I never had any friends to play it with, and as a rule I don’t play with randos online. It’s super annoying that we’re in this world where multiplayer is only available on official company servers. Oh, for the days of Gamespy.

That’s awful. In spite of all the bugs, I still love this game and hop in from time to time.

This is how aaa companies treat their own products. Compare that to h3vr or b&s with devs that love their creations

I bought it, could not play more than 2 games due to microphone bugs. It forces you to validate that you have a micro with the builtin microphone testing wich doesn’t work on MANY systems. So you could not validate and play mp or play over discord or we, no answers from bugisoft whatsoever. Lots and lots of complains for that same reason on VR forums, don’t buy it.

Actually making the game playable on quest 2 since it was broken for most people, and fixing the game breaking bugs and crashes, probably would have helped the game do a little better. Every time we ever tried to play, the people on quest would inevitably crash (almost 100% of the time), or their character in game would stop functioning for everyone but the person playing him.

Great game, really fun for Star Trek enthusiasts. Sad to see developers drop a game after taking the customers money. A problem that I had with the game is the lack of add on missions. They could have had literally a CASH COW! Maybe not as much as WOW or Diablo, but they could have had a huge stream of income. As we all know companies can really make some piss poor decisions. Just ask Bud-Light and Target. LOL

Star Trek: Bridge Crew [RELISTED]

Star Trek: Bridge Crew [RELISTED]

Star Trek: Bridge Crew was relisted on Steam on March 16th, 2022 and had also returned to the Ubisoft Store for Oculus and Vive. The PlayStation 4 and Oculus Store versions were then relisted by April 12th, 2022. None of the release details or copyrights changed so it seems the licensing deal between Ubisoft and Paramount was simply renewed. Thanks to Linoano for pointing out the game’s return.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew was first delisted on Steam and the Oculus store on February 10th, 2022 . It next disappeared on the PlayStation Store in Japan on February 11th. The game was then confirmed to have been delisted from the Ubisoft Store on February 15th and on PlayStation 4 by February 18th after the end of a discount sale on the PlayStation Store.

Although unconfirmed, the delisting seems to have been caused by expired licensing of the Star Trek properties from Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios. However, the game has gone without much support since a 2018 “Next Generation” expansion so compatibility issues may also have factored into its removal.

About the Game

Star Trek™: Bridge Crew will immerse you in the Star Trek universe (VR compatible). The game puts you and your friends in the heart of the U.S.S. Aegis.

Your mission: explore a largely uncharted sector of space known as The Trench, in hopes of locating a suitable new home world for the decimated Vulcan populace. The Klingon Empire is also active in the region, and their purpose is a threat to the Federation’s plans.

Make strategic decisions and coordinate actions with your crew to complete the mission.

In co-op, you can form a crew of four players to serve in the roles of Captain, Helm, Tactical and Engineer. In addition to a dynamic storyline, the game features an “Ongoing Missions” mode, procedurally generating missions for countless hours of Solo and Co-op adventure.

In Star Trek™: Bridge Crew, communication, trust, and close crew coordination are the keys to victory.

A permanent internet connection is required in order to play the game.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew Delisted On Quest, Oculus & Steam

Star Trek: Bridge Crew has been delisted across multiple storefronts, with the few remaining platforms likely to follow.

The game, which was previously available for PC VR, PSVR and Quest headsets, is no longer available for purchase on the Oculus Store (for both PC and Quest) and on Steam. It is still available in select regions on the PlayStation Store for PSVR, while the PC VR version is seemingly still available to purchase through Ubisoft .

No reasoning or announcement has been made to explain why it’s being delisted, but given the game involves licensing arrangements to use the Star Trek brand, it’s very likely that the license is now expired. This often happens with games based on other popular properties, like older Marvel titles. In fact, Rift-exclusive Marvel: Powers United VR suffered the same fate in 2020 .

When visiting the store pages for Bridge Crew on Oculus for PC and Quest , the game is still visible but not available to purchase. The Steam page for the PC VR version of the game is the same, however it is accompanied by a small message reading “At the request of the publisher, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is no longer available for sale on Steam.”

While the game remains on sale on the PlayStation Store for PSVR and through Ubisoft for PC VR, it seems unlikely that those versions of the game will remain available indefinitely while the others are delisted.

Generally, when a game is delisted those who own the game are still able to access it and may remain unaffected so they can play the game in its existing state, with no future updates. That said, Bridge Crew is primarily meant to be played online with others even though it does have a single-player mode. Therefore, purchasing the game at this point could be a risk since we don’t know if the multiplayer portion of the game will remain operable and for how long. We’re reaching out to Ubisoft to ask about its plan for the multiplayer services in Bridge Crew. We’ll update this post if we hear back.

At the time of writing, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is available on the PlayStation Store for PSVR and Ubisoft for PC VR .

This post was updated from its original version with a different purchasing recommendation for Star Trek: Bridge Crew in the penultimate paragraph.

You're in Command with Star Trek: Bridge Crew

star trek bridge crew 2022

Today at E3 in Los Angeles, Ubisoft announced a fall release for Star Trek: Bridge Crew , a new virtual reality game that will allow players to explore space as a member of the Federation. Supporting the announcement: a cool video featuring LeVar Burton, Jeri Ryan and Karl Urban trying out the game. Playable co-operatively with a crew or solo as Captain, Star Trek: Bridge Crew puts players directly onto the bridge in a Starfleet ship. The game will be available on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Bridge Crew puts a player and their friends in the heart of a brand-new starship, the U.S.S. Aegis, where every action and decision made will determine the fate of the ship and her crew. The overriding mission is as follows: Explore a largely uncharted sector of space known as The Trench, in hopes of locating a suitable new home world for the decimated Vulcan populace -- while coming into direct conflict with the vaunted Klingon Empire.

As developed by Red Storm Entertainment, a Ubisoft Studio, Bridge Crew is designed exclusively for VR. It capitalizes on the powerful sense of social presence only possible through virtual reality. Through hand tracking and full-body avatars, including real-time lip-sync, players can experience what it’s like to serve as an officer on the bridge of a Federation starship.

Paramount+'s newest Star Trek series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , has a galaxy of new talent representing legacy and canon while also launching wholly original characters.

Speaking with TV Fanatic and other outlets during a recent press day, three of the stars -- Christina Chong (Chief of Security La'an Noonien-Singh), Celia Rose Gooding (Cadet and Communications Specialist Nyota Uhura), and Melissa Navia (Pilot and Helm Officer Erica Ortegas) -- share their excitement for their show's premiere.

From learning which buttons to press on their bridge consoles to debating free will versus predetermination, these actresses are indicative of the vibrant and energetic cast this highly-anticipated episodic series brings to bear.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Key Art

As the bridge crew of the USS Enterprise, everyone recognizes the expectation that there would need to be a consistency in the procedures they carry out at their stations. Each actress has her own approach to learning her "job" and what that looks like.

Chong works from a method of internalized import. "From what I know – I asked, and I was told – basically make it up yourself. So I had a lot of fun deciding which one I’m going to use when, and I would switch it, and it would change all the time.

"What I would do is I would make sure that whenever I did press a button -- normally, I’m pressing a button either to deploy weapons, so it’s obviously a huge decision to press the red button (or whatever colored button) -- I endow it with something super important that I’ve personalized in my own life to make it feel real for me and therefore the audience in the moment."

Navia takes a more realism-based approach. "For me [at] the helm console, I was doing these Zoom sessions with the graphics department and with people who have been with Star Trek for the last thirty, forty years and asking about the engines, the way everything works.

Ortegas at the Helm - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 2

"Apparently, word got out that Melissa’s a little looney. Like she really thinks she’s flying a starship.

"For me, it was important to know how am I going to impulse, how am I going to warp. There are times when I’m doing evasive maneuvers where Pike will give me an order, and I’ll be, “On it,” but it won’t come up on my screen, so I’d be straight-up texting Graphics, [asking,] 'Can you guys give me something?' And they’d be, 'Well, it probably won’t play in the episode.' And I’m like, 'Yeah, but it’s playing in my face.'

"So they would create all these things for me, and I’d [ask,] 'Can we change this screen? And that screen?' They also think it’s really important for the fans, and I know that there are going to be fans that know more about the Enterprise than even I do, even though I’ve been doing my research.

"So for me, when I’m there, I’m flying. There’d be times when Anson would be speaking to somebody on the viewscreen, and I’d have a little quip, and I’d miss it. Anson’s like, “Melissa,” and I’m like, 'I’m so sorry. I’m flying.' I’m so focused. So I’m the dorky one on the bridge for sure."

Gooding has the most straightforward way of dealing with her controls of the three. "I press as many buttons as possible.

Uhura - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 2

"I remember the first day, I established the red alert button is the farthest button away from me which probably wasn’t the smartest thing in the world, but I am very much a person who [believes], 'It’s always going to be the right thing.'

"It may be in a different place, but I’m sure the continuity fans are going to be like, 'She didn’t press that button last time!' And I’m like, “Okay, team, suspending disbelief.' Absolutely."

As Uhura, Gooding steps into a role made iconic by Nichelle Nichols and, more recently, brought to the big screen by Zoe Saldaña. Playing her as the youngest member of the bridge, still a cadet, in fact, how much of the character does Gooding borrow from her predecessors?

"We are definitely seeing Uhura getting her space legs, as opposed to her sea legs, and it’s incredible.

Uhura Close-Up - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"I, of course, did a lot of studying of Nichelle’s Uhura, but my first introduction to Uhura as a character [was Saldaña's].

"My mom’s a huge Trekkie. She used to take my sister and me to watch the movies at movie theaters when they were still a thing, and I remember running to the front row and watching it by myself and craning my neck up to look at Zoe. I just remember being so captivated by [how] she knew how brilliant she was.

"It wasn’t something that she had to make a spectacle of. It was just something that when she needed to be that capable brilliant person, then there she was to be just that.

"With Nichelle, she had this grace, this glamor. Of course, she had that intelligence and her brilliance, and I think that’s the thing that I’m trying to carry in this very young version of her.

"This understanding that she knows even more than she probably thinks she knows, and she’s much smarter than I think she assumes of herself. But the newness and the unsurety is something that I am weaving through this character as we get to know her season to season.

Cadet Uhura - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"We know where she ends up, and we know who she ends up being, but we don’t really know how she got there. It’s my job to take that and use it to influence her growth and to monitor, 'Oh, this is how she developed this personality trait, or, as she’s gotten comfortable, she been a lot more this or more that.”

"That is something that I’m excited for the audience to mark through the first season and, of course, in the seasons to come.

Navia is in the unique situation of bringing her Lt. Erica Ortegas to Star Trek as a character unencumbered by any expectations since she isn't a legacy character like Uhura and doesn't carry the baggage of the Noonien-Singh surname like La'an.

How did she go about shaping Ortegas and making a place for her on this crew?

"There’s a thing that you say as an actor: When the right role comes along, it’ll be right. It’ll be the one.

Best Pilot in Starfleet - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"The writing was so wonderful, and I felt this connection to Ortegas. I had the breakdown, right? I knew it was Star Trek. The breakdown was that she was a combat veteran and skilled pilot, can handle a gun, can handle a phaser, and can also crack a joke when a joke needs to be cracked.

"I felt that the audition sides I got were so much me and also in the future. I like to say that Ortegas is like a cooler version of me in the future. Like, in the future, I’d love to fly a starship.

"So, when I booked the role, I also got the added element of this is a brand new character that gets to interact with all these legacy characters, which is going to be a lot of fun for fans.

"The idea [is] that she’s so confident but cocky in a lovable way, not an obnoxious way because she is really skilled. Pike trusts her intrinsically, and she has such great trust in the rest of her crew.

"When somebody is so good at their job and trusts everybody equally in their workspace, then you’re allowed to joke and play, and that really comes off.

Ortegas Promo Poster - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"She loves the adventure of what she does, and she also takes it seriously. We get this episodic adventure where you get to see the toll that it takes when lives are on the line.

"I’ve just been having a blast creating this character and also looking back to all the pilots that have come before, the characters that fans are already comparing her to even though they haven’t seen anything.

"I’m trying to make my own mark on it by just bringing myself to it and also letting what the writers have created just come to the screen. I’m also taking a lot of what the fans love about Star Trek and putting that into Ortegas. Like she loves Starfleet in the way that fans love Star Trek."

Booking a role on a Star Trek show revealed a lot about people in her life as well as the anticipation in the fandom for Strange New Worlds, which might've been overwhelming if not for the leadership of Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn , and Ethan Peck .

"Well, the first thing is you find out that there’s a lot of Trekkies in your life that you didn’t realize were Trekkies before.

Ortegas Looks Skeptical - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"One of my brother-in-laws, he’s a Trekkie, and he texted me because I think it’s the only thing my sister allowed him to do. He just had one question, 'All I want to know, is it Strange New Worlds?' And I’m like, 'Yes.' And he’s like, 'This is the one we’ve been waiting for.' And I was like, 'Oh my goodness, okay.'

"So I already knew it was a really big deal, and I was incredibly happy to have Anson and Rebecca and Ethan kind of as our One, Two, and Three on the show because they had been on Discovery. Knowing that the fans loved them so much, and it was the reason that our show exists, that I have a job right now, that meant a lot to me.

"We all felt very … like nervousness but in a good way? But we had leaders at the helm that had already done this. I kept saying at the start, 'Yeah, if I had to pick a captain, it’d be Captain Pike.' I just had absolute loyalty to the three of them.

"And then being able to create this character next to these legacy characters – Spock, Uhura, we have Dr. M’Benga. We have Nurse Chapel. Number One, who we never got her story. So, all these decades later, we get to see her story.

"And Captain Pike, who people who I spoke to who weren’t even huge Star Trek fans, they were like, 'Oh yeah, Pike. Who was there before Kirk.'

Pilot Ortegas - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

"It’s been, on so many levels, a wild ride. I’ve been doing my best. I joke that when I’m flying the ship, guys, I’m flying the ship. I take it super seriously. I know how that starship runs. A few make fun of me, but I’m like it has to be.

"As soon as I think it’s just a prop in front of me, we might as well all go home. So I’ve been taking it like the responsibility is not lost on any of us.

"Every single day, I’m boosted by my incredible cast and, again, Anson, Ethan, and Rebecca, I think we all agree we couldn’t have asked for a better crew to step on board with."

With Captain Pike trying to cope with the memory of the vision of his future from Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 12 , much of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 addresses the question of how much free will there is when the future seems predetermined.

On which side of the debate do Gooding, Chong, and Navie feel their characters would come down?

Gooding hints at some of Uhura's backstory with her answer, "I would say because of the past that she’s had... I think she will grow into the understanding that there’s a lot more free will and that she determines her own future, but I think, at the moment, where we see her in this first episode, she’s very much someone who [feels], 'The universe happens to me. I am not something that happens with it.'"

La'an Noonien-Singh - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 1

Chong also uses her character's history to inform her beliefs. "La’an is more on the – for sure – free will [side] because so many bad things have happened to her. She’s been through so much. It’s that need to control. When you need to control something, your will is as strong as it can be. And controlling the uncontrollable is kind of one of her struggles."

While Navia feels Ortegas also values free will, she sees that there may be an interplay between the two phenomena.

"In terms of free will, it’s this idea that you create your future. But I’ll say for myself, personally, [based on] things that have happened -- and again, that’s myself being infused into the character -- there’s a certain level [of understanding] that things happen for a reason.

"We see some beautiful elements of that in Season 1 where we don’t know why things happen as they happen, but the right people are put in the right place at the right time, and there’s certain things that we just can’t understand. So, in that way, there’s a mix of that.

"We, of course, see Captain Pike going through the struggle as to what and how that changes how you live in life. There’s things that are personally happening with me, personally happening with the cast, that we are using that to inform our characters.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Poster

"We all are trying to figure that out in Season 1, and that’ll continue on to Season 2 that we’re currently filming."

Star trek: discovery season 5, episode 5 ending explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 contains two major reveals about the Mirror Universe and the Breen. We break down what the ending means.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Star Trek: Discovery's next clue is hidden aboard the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise trapped in interdimensional space.
  • L'ak is a Breen with a blood bounty on his head, and his backstory with Moll is revealed.
  • The USS Discovery crew, led by Commander Rayner, helps save Burnham and Book and bring the ISS Enterprise into the Prime Universe, but Moll and L'ak escape.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," ends with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery's crew grappling with jaw-dropping reveals about the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise, L'ak's (Elias Toufexis) species, and the next clue in the hunt for the Progenitors' treasure. Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, the thrilling "Mirrors" sends Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) into interdimensional space after Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak and the third Progenitors' clue , but they found a lot more than they bargained for.

In Star Trek: Discovery s eason 5, episode 5, Captain Burnham, Cleveland Booker, Moll, and L'ak are all trapped aboard the derelict ISS Enterprise after Burnham's shuttle and L'ak's ship are destroyed by interdimensional space, a dangerous region between Star Trek 's Prime and Mirror Universes . Michael ingeniously uses the Enterprise's tractor beam to send a distress signal to the USS Discovery, where Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and the bridge crew find a way to keep the aperture of the interdimensional space wormhole open to fly the ISS Enterprise through. However, L'ak and Moll make their escape, leaving Burnham, Book, and the Starfleet heroes to grapple with the third clue to the Progenitors' treasure, and what they learned and found in the wormhole.

The ISS Enterprise's first and only previous appearance was in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2's "Mirror, Mirror", which introduced the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Captain kirk's mirror universe iss enterprise now belongs to 32nd century starfleet, it's been a long road for the iss enterprise.

The Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise becomes the property of the 32nd century's Starfleet and United Federation of Planets at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors." Captain Burnham assigned Lt. Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) - who don't actually appear in the episode - to fly the ISS Enterprise back to Federation HQ to be put into "storage". However, the acquisition of a major historical find like a 23rd-century Constitution Class starship filled with Terran Empire technology from the Mirror Universe is bound to be of interest to Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg).

After the Temporal Wars, crossing over between the Mirror Universe and Star Trek 's Prime universe is now impossible, but the ISS Enteprise was trapped in interdimensional space for centuries, which crossing over could still happen.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5's ISS Enterprise scenes were filmed on the USS Enterprise sets of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Discovery season 5's production took place at the end of 2022, after Strange New Worlds season 2 had wrapped in June and long before Strange New Worlds season 3 filming started in December 2023. The USS Enterprise's bridge, medical bay, transporter room, and hallways were redressed to turn the starship into its Mirror Universe counterpart.

Commander Michael Burnham previously came aboard Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Star Trek: Discovery's Mirror Universe Revelations

We found out what happened to mirror spock and mirror saru.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5's ISS Enterprise appearance answered some big questions about the events of the Mirror Universe after Star Trek: The Original Series ' "Mirror, Mirror." Cleveland Booker learned from the plaque where the Enterprise's missing crew left their story behind that the Terran High Chancellor was assassinated after making reforms. This refers to the Mirror Universe's Spock (Leonard Nimoy), who was urged by the Prime Universe's Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to make reforms to prevent the inevitable collapse of the Terran Empire, which happened anyway.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Mirror Universe episodes revealed that the Terran Empire, weakened by Spock's reforms, was conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

Refugees led by a Kelpien slave-turned-rebel leader - Saru (Doug Jones) - used the ISS Enterprise to flee the Mirror Universe for the Prime Universe in the 23rd century, but the starship was trapped in interdimensional space. The Enterprise's crew eventually used the ship's shuttles and escape pods to abandon the starship in an effort to make it to the Prime Universe. Some did make it through, including the ISS Enterprise's junior science officer, Dr. Cho , who later joined Starfleet and became a branch Admiral in the 24th century.

Jinaal Bix redacted the names of the scientists who found the Progenitors' technology, including Dr. Cho.

Moll & L'ak Escaped Discovery With A Breen Bounty On Their Heads

L'ak is the nephew of the breen primarch.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 revealed the backstory of Moll and L'ak, including the revelation that L'ak is Breen . Years before Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Moll was a courier who sold latinum to the Breen Imperium, where she met L'ak, the nephew of the Breen's Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo), who had fallen out of favor and was working in the shuttle bay. Moll and L'ak fell in love , and L'ak committed a crime against the Breen by consorting with "a lesser being" and removing his helmet to show Moll his true face. Confronted by his uncle, L'ak shot the Primarch and fled with Moll.

Moll and L'ak used one of the ISS Enterprise's remaining warp pods to flee capture.

Moll and L'ak both have an Erigah, a Breen blood bounty, on their heads, and they hope that finding the Progenitors' treasure and selling it to the Breen will buy their freedom. Neither Moll and L'ak want the Federation's help offered by Captain Burnham, and they would "rather die" than be separated in a Federation prison. L'ak was injured in a brawl with Burnham, but instead of seeking medical attention from the USS Discovery, Moll and L'ak used one of the ISS Enterprise's remaining warp pods to flee capture. However, this time, Moll and L'ak left behind a warp trail Discovery can follow.

Cleveland Booker Tries To Connect With Moll

Booker's mentor was moll's absentee father.

Cleveland Booker has personal reasons to connect with and save Moll. Moll's real name is Malinne Booker, and she is the daughter of Book's late mentor, Cleveland Booker IV . Moll's father abandoned her and her mother to become a courier and raise the funds needed to move his family to a new home in the Gamma Quadrant. However, Booker IV's dangerous life as a courier and dealings with criminal organizations like the Emerald Chain made him keep his distance from Malinne, who blamed him for leaving her behind.

Moll doesn't want Cleveland Booker in her life.

Moll became a courier like her father to do what he didn't and earn enough latinum to move to the Gamma Quadrant, but Moll's entire world shifted when she fell in love with L'ak and the Breen placed a blood bounty on their head s. Moll doesn't want Cleveland Booker in her life , but she relents when she has the chance to kill the man who took her father's name. Whether Moll will ever come to see Book as the "only family" she has left, the way Book sees her, remains to be seen.

Commander Rayner Got The Best Out Of USS Discovery's Crew

Citrus mash for everyone.

Captain Burnham left Commander Rayner at the conn of the USS Discovery while she and Book went on their away mission, despite Rayner's reservations about leading Burnham's crew. However, Rayner was impressed that Burnhum learned Kellerun literature to connect with her new First Officer. This knowledge was the key to Rayner saving Burnham from interdimensional space. Burnham used the ISS Enterprise's tractor beam to send a signal the Kellerun commander would understand.

Rayner gained a new appreciation for Discovery's crew and how to work with them as his own crew.

Commander Rayner placed his trust in the USS Discovery's crew to "science" a way to open the wormhole's aperture and pull the ISS Enterprise into the Prime Universe. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp). Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio), Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Lt. Christopher (Orville Cummings), Lt. Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson), Lt. Naya (Victoria Sawal), Lt. Commander Asha (Christina Dixon), and Lt. Gallo (Natalie Liconti) all rose to the occasion and found a way to save Burnham and Book. In turn, Rayner gained a new appreciation for Discovery's crew and how to work with them as his own crew.

Dr. Culber Reaches Out To Tilly

Culber has questions science can't answer.

The USS Discovery's counselor, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), needs a counselor of his own. Culber continues to deal with the unimaginable experience of Trill scientist Jinaal Bix occupying his mind and body in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "Jinaal." Being taken over by a Trill has left Culber with existential questions, and he hopes finding the Progenitors' technology will provide him with the answers he seeks.

Hugh finds a sympathetic ear in Lt. Sylvia Tilly.

Unfortunately for Hugh, he doesn't believe he can share his feelings with his husband, Commander Paul Stamets because Paul is a man of science, and Culber's questions are ineffable. Hugh finds a sympathetic ear in Lt. Sylvia Tilly, but the answers Dr. Culber seeks are tied to what the USS Discovery finds when they locate the Progenitors' treasure - or so Hugh hopes. Culber, who has already died and been resurrected, may find himself in a new scenario that has pivotal life-or-death decisions in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Dr. Hugh Culber's dilemma in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a rare attempt by Star Trek to address spiritual questions.

Where Star Trek: Discovery's Next Progenitors' Treasure Clue Leads

The next clue involves water.

Captain Burnham acquired the third clue from Moll and L'ak, which is a vial of water contained within a piece of the Progenitors' treasure map. Burnham is waiting for Commander Stamets to conduct a chemical analysis of the water, which will reveal where the USS Discovery must go next for the 4th clue . However, Michael told Book that Dr. Cho, the former Terran scientist who became a Starfleet Admiral, went back to the ISS Enterprise in interdimensional space and hid her clue to the Progenitors' technology there.

Michael also told Book she saw him in the past during Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange's" time loops, and that they were happy back then.

Burnham and Book mused over the lessons attached to each clue. On Trill, finding Jinaal's clue was dependent on Burnham and Booker proving they value lifeforms other than their own. On Lyrek for the first clue, the lesson was the importance of cultural context. Michael surmised that the lesson Dr. Cho left behind with her clue on the ISS Enterprise was to have the hope to shape your own future in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 as the search for the Progenitors' treasure and the answers to life, itself, continues.
