Switzerland enjoys the distinction of being the country in which the Rhine, one of the world’s most famous rivers, begins its journey. From high up in the Swiss Alps, it flows down into the country and forms its border with neighbouring Germany, which you can enjoy on a Germany river cruise , before continuing onward. It’s possible to visit Switzerland on Rhine river cruise itineraries that concern themselves with that particular region of the river and also those that offer an epic voyage from river cruises in Holland along its entire length, or indeed the reverse of this route.

A Switzerland river cruise will offer you the chance to explore both the beautiful Rhine port of Basel and Lucerne, which sits on the shore of the lake of the same name and acts as a gateway to the centre of the country. Make the most of one of Europe river cruises ' most beautiful destinations and book your 2024 river cruise now.

Switzerland River Cruise Destinations

Switzerland plays host to some amazing destinations, with amazing port cities to explore and staggering views to see. Taking a Switzerland river cruise is an experience sure to last a lifetime. River cruises in Switzerland make the perfect destination for a mini river cruise .

Explore Basel

A Basel river cruise is one of the very few destinations which sits at the point where three nations meet. It’s close to the Swiss, German, and France river cruise borders, making it a contemporary and fascinating city to explore. Basel acts as the port which serves Lucerne, a key first or last destination for a number of Rhine itineraries; you may not have time to explore, depending on the duration of your stay in the city.

If you do find yourself with time for a look around, there are some key architectural attractions well worth seeing, including the strikingly red City Hall and the beautiful Munster, with its colourful tiled roof. Basel is regarded by many as Switzerland's cultural hub and also home to some excellent museums including its Fine Art Museum and distinctly original Paper Mill Museum. Basel makes the perfect destination for a river cruise in Switzerland so book ahead for your 2025 river cruise and enjoy early booking benefits.

Explore Lucerne

Though not a river cruise port, Lucerne is a popular starting or finishing point for a number of Rhine cruises which pass through Switzerland, because as well as being the location of one of the country’s airports, it offers some excellent sight-seeing opportunities. It makes for the perfect destination for a luxury river cruise . In fact, the opportunities begin before you arrive in Lucerne itself, because you’ll be able to enjoy some incredible views of the Swiss countryside if you transfer from Basel.

A stroll through the old town offers the chance to see many traditional homes as well as such key landmarks as the painted covered walkway Chapel Bridge and the beautiful cathedral. Lake Lucerne is of course an attraction in itself, offering some breathtaking vistas, as is the soaring Mount Rigi, which provides a constantly beautiful backdrop. Mount Pilatus meanwhile is a mountain which it’s possible to scale during your visit by none other than the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. Certainly, you’ll be rewarded with some truly awesome views when you reach the top.

Basel is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the Swiss, French and German borders. It is located on the bend of the River Rhine and benefits from a Mediterranean climate. It is the third most populated city in Switzerland and has been the commercial hub for Swiss arts and culture since the Renaissance. In 1967 the people of Basel voted to acquire two paintings by Picasso, who was so moved by the Basel people that he donated 3 paintings and a study to the city's Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts). Visit the Augusta Raurica, one of the largest Roman archaeology parks in Switzerland, and enjoy a river crossings over the River Rhine by non-motorised ferries. During the summer months, time is spent outdoors, either swimming in the River Rhine, dining al fresco, enjoying open air concerts, cinema, street parties and festivals. Basel is home to over 20 restaurants that have won GaultMillau or Michelin awards, and boasts Switzerland's largest collection of theatre shows, including modern contemporary dance, touring and puppetry theatre.

Darla Uhl

  • December 18, 2023 March 14, 2024

Last Updated on March 14, 2024 by Darla Uhl

Switzerland is known for its stunning landscapes, and its rivers are no exception. There are some breathtaking views along Switzerland’s rivers, from the Rhine to the Aare. Here are ten of the best Swiss rivers you’ll never forget.

switzerland river tours

The Swiss rivers aren’t just beautiful, they’re also full of fun activities. There’s something for everyone on Switzerland’s rivers, whether you’re looking for a relaxing cruise or an adrenaline-fueled rafting trip. Throughout this article, we’ll point out the best rivers for each activity and provide tips on how to make the most out of it. Let’s dive into the ten best Swiss rivers.

Understanding Swiss Rivers

There are lots of rivers in Switzerland, many of which come from glacial melt and alpine springs. These rivers are beautiful and pristine, perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and cruising. Additionally, some provide hydroelectric power and irrigation for farming, which helps the economy.

Rivers in Switzerland are also home to trout, grayling, pike, and whitefish. Swiss law protects many of these species, and fishing regulations are enforced strictly.

The Rhine River, one of Europe’s biggest rivers, starts in the Swiss Alps and flows through Germany and the Netherlands before reaching the North Sea. From the Bernese Alps, the Aare River flows through Swiss cities like Bern and joins the Rhine. Other significant rivers include the Reuss, Limmat, and Inn.

If you’re visiting Switzerland, check out one of the ten best rivers listed below.

10 Best Swiss Rivers

1. rhine river.

Rhine River - One of Switzerland's Best Rivers

The Rhine River stretches over 1,233 kilometers from its source in the Grisons to its mouth at the North Sea, making it one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe. Along its course, it flows through six countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, France, and the Netherlands.

In Switzerland, the Rhine River is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The river is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including trout, salmon, and beavers. It is also an important transportation route in Europe.

One of the highlights of the Rhine River in Switzerland is the Rhine Falls , an impressive waterfall located near the town of Schaffhausen . With a width of 150 meters and a height of 23 meters, this impressive waterfall is one of the biggest in Europe. Boat tours let you get close to the falls, or you can watch them from a viewing platform nearby.

A beautiful riverside canyon, the Rhine Gorge , is also worth visiting. Some boat trips depart from Basel , Schaffhausen , and Kreuzlingen .

2. Verzasca River

Verzasca - Among the Best Swiss Rivers

The Verzasca River is a popular destination in Valle Verzasca for tourists and locals alike. Located in the Ticino region of Switzerland, it’s known for crystal-clear water and beautiful scenery. Verzasca is one of the best Swiss rivers because of its beautiful turquoise color, which I think is unmatched elsewhere.

One of the most iconic features of the Verzasca River is the Ponte dei Salti , a historic bridge in Lavertezzo that spans the river. Visitors can take a dip in the river from the bridge, or enjoy the view from above. The current here can be strong, so be careful while swimming.

Verzasca River is not just beautiful, it’s also home to several historical towns and villages. You can explore the charming streets of places like Lavertezzo and Sonogno, and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the region.

3. Aare River

switzerland river tours

The crystal-clear waters and fantastic riverbanks of the Aare River make it one of the best Swiss rivers. With a length of over 291 kilometers, it is one of the longest rivers in Switzerland.

The Aare River emerges from the Lower Aar Glacier in the Bernese Alps. Afterward, the Aare River runs through Bern , Solothurn , and Aargau.

The Aare River is a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and rafting. Floating downstream on an inner tube or rubber raft is also one of the most popular activities on the Aare River. While some sections of the river are relatively calm, others have rapids that challenge experienced rafters.

One of the highlights of the Aare River is the Aare Gorge , the narrow passage where the Aare flows from the foot of the Grimsel area to the plain above Lake Brienz.

4. Reuss River

switzerland river tours

The central part of Switzerland is traversed by the Reuss River , counted among the best Swiss rivers. It is the fourth-longest river in Switzerland, stretching 164 kilometers from its source in Furkareuss above the Furka Pass to its confluence with the Aare River in Windisch.

The four most scenic sections of the Reuss River are the following:

  • the Schöllenen Gorge (Devil’s Bridge) in Andermatt
  • the area around the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne
  • the stretch between Flüelen and Lucerne near the Lorelei Bathing Islands
  • the sights of Bremgarten and the wooden bridge

The Reuss River flows through historically rich areas like Andermatt, Lucerne, Zug, and Bremgarten, each holding significant historical towns and landmarks. Among these, Andermatt stands out, once a pivotal medieval trading hub and now a renowned ski destination.

5. Maggia River

switzerland river tours

Maggia is among the best Swiss rivers, distinguished by its breathtaking location among picturesque mountains and waterfalls, and renowned for its pristine, crystal-clear waters. It is a 59-kilometer-long river located in the canton of Ticino that flows from the Basodina Glacier into the Lago Maggiore between Locarno and Ascona.

The river is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, who come to enjoy its natural beauty and recreational opportunities such as swimming and canyoning. Beautiful bathing areas, well-visited during summer, are found near Ponte Brolla (look for Pozzo di Tegna ), Avegno, Ponte di Lodano, Maggia, Giumaglio, Someo, and Riale Salto.

Adventure seekers will enjoy canyoning, an activity that involves navigating through the river’s narrow gorges and waterfalls. Several companies offer guided canyoning tours on the Maggia River.

The Maggia River is also home to several picturesque villages, like Maggia, Cevio, and Avegno. They’re worth a visit if you want to see how Swiss live traditionally.

6. Limmat River

Limmat - Among the Best Swiss Rivers

Flowing through Switzerland, the 36-kilometer-long Limmat River originates from Lake Zurich and eventually joins the Aare River in Brugg. Known for its clear waters and scenic views, it’s one of Switzerland’s most important rivers.

There’s a lot to do along the Limmat River, like swimming, kayaking, and fishing. Parks, restaurants, and cafes line its banks, making it a great place to stroll.

Discovering Zurich through a Limmat River Cruise is a great idea. The Limmat River also boasts Baden , a medieval town famous for its hot springs and old buildings.

7. Simme River

switzerland river tours

In the realm of the best Swiss rivers, the Simme River flows through the beautiful Simmental Valley in the Bernese Oberland. It stretches for about 55 kilometers.

Simme River is known for its crystal-clear waters and gorgeous scenery. A lot of outdoor enthusiasts come here, including hikers, cyclists, and river rafters.

One of the highlights of the Simme River is the Simmenfälle waterfall, located near the town of Lenk. Near the waterfalls is its source – the Siebenbrunnen , a rocky cleft with seven springs, at the foot of the Wildstrubel.

Simme River is also home to several charming towns and villages, like Lenk im Simmental and Zweisimmen. If you’re exploring the region, these towns offer a glimpse into traditional Swiss life.

8. Sarine River

Sarine - Among the Best Swiss Rivers

The Sarine River , also known as the Saane River, is one of the best Swiss rivers due to its diverse and picturesque landscapes. It flows through Switzerland’s western region stretching approximately 128 kilometers. Starting from the Sanetschhorn glacier nestled in the Bernese Alps, it traverses Fribourg and Bern .

Kayaking on the Sarine River begins at Saanen/Gstaad, leading into the French-speaking destination of Pays d’Enhaut. The 15-kilometer route covers Vanel and Gérignoz gorges to Château-d’Oex. It’s an intermediate-level challenge, best enjoyed between May and August.

Walking along the Sarine River from Gstaad to Saanen offers a peaceful alternative to kayaking. Starting from Gstaad’s station, the trail passes alongside the Saane River and scenic woodlands, leading to Saanen’s town center.

Another fantastic option is the “ Fribourg – Along the River Sarine ” thematic tour that lets you explore the Sarine River through Fribourg’s bridges.

9. Inn River

Inn - Among the Best Swiss Rivers

There’s no denying how beautiful the Engadine Valley is. And the river that flows here is one of Switzerland’s most popular rivers – the Inn. The Inn River flows through Switzerland, Austria, and Germany as a tributary of the Danube.

The Inn River is approximately 518 kilometers long, with around 104 kilometers of it flowing through Switzerland. Originating in Lägh dal Lunghin beneath Piz Lunghin mountain, it courses through the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Free State of Bavaria in Germany.

St. Moritz , Scuol , and Guarda stand out as picturesque villages along the Inn River. It’s also got lots of hiking and biking trails along the river, so it’s perfect for nature lovers.

10. Kander River

Kander - Among the Best Swiss Rivers

Kander River is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful rivers. The river begins its journey at the Kanderfirn glacier, winding through the scenic Kandertal valley. It then merges with the Simme River, eventually finding its way into Lake Thun. It’s about 44 kilometers long.

Although the Kander has crystal clear waters that seem perfect for swimming and water sports, it is classified as extremely dangerous due to many rapids. It is marked as impassable on safety maps and has caused deaths. Nonetheless, there are also scenic hiking trails along the Kander River, particularly between Frutigen and Wimmis.

Kander Gorge is one of the main attractions of the Kander River, an artificially created canyon with rapids and waterfalls.

A Zürich, Switzerland Land Trip With Viking River Cruise

A Zürich, Switzerland Land Trip With Viking River Cruise

During our unforgettable Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise with Viking River Cruises, my husband (Eddie) and I found ourselves in the captivating city of Zürich, Switzerland. Although I had been to Switzerland before, Zürich was an unexplored gem. Viking River Cruises seamlessly transported us from the cruise ship to the hotel, and later to the airport, as part of their all-inclusive package.

Zürich bewitched us with its mesmerizing beauty and undeniable charm, despite being notoriously expensive. Over the course of our two-day stay, we eagerly immersed ourselves in the city’s delights, making the most of the complimentary walking tour and invigorating boat ride organized by Viking River Cruises. Allow me to share a glimpse of what awaits you on your visit to Zürich.

Zürich Scenery

Breathtaking scenery unfurls in every direction in Zürich. Whether it be the grandeur of the architectural masterpieces or the vibrant façades of historical buildings, the snow-capped Swiss Alps serving as a backdrop or the enchanting cobblestone streets that wound their way through the city, there is no shortage of picturesque moments that will prompt your camera to work overtime.

Zürich is an incredible city to explore on foot. Without even realizing it, we covered an impressive seven miles in a single day, diligently recorded by our trusty Fitbit. Such was the pleasure derived from our stroll that the concept of distance faded away, leaving us fully engrossed in the awe-inspiring ambiance that unfolded at every turn.

The Food in Zürich

Switzerland is renowned for its exquisite culinary offerings, with one of my personal favorites being cheese. Everywhere you go, you’ll encounter a plethora of exotic cheese choices. During my visit, indulging in authentic Swiss cheese fondue at the Swiss Chuchi Restaurant , nestled in the heart of the old town, was a must for me and my companion Eddie.

We opted for the traditional recipe, combining Vaudois cheese, white wine, cherry liquor, and garlic, resulting in a gastronomic delight that exceeded all expectations.

swiss-fondue-pot

Another popular cheese delicacy in Zürich is raclette, which has recently gained popularity even in American eateries. While exploring the town, we noticed numerous raclette shops scattered around, its tantalizing aroma captivating our senses well before catching sight of it.

It’s worth noting that dining in Zürich can be quite costly. Simple meals often came with a hefty price tag of $24, and even a small bottled soda would cost between $4 and $7 at our hotel. Surprisingly, beer turned out to be more economical than both water and soda.

However, in the old town, we stumbled upon a gem called Blue Monkey —a delightful Thai restaurant boasting chic decor and offering a lunch buffet priced at $26 per person. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment for an exquisite culinary experience.

Overall, Switzerland’s gastronomic offerings, particularly its cheese creations, exceeded all expectations, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my culinary adventure in this beautiful country.

Parade Square

Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through Paradeplatz (Parade Square) located in downtown Zürich. This upscale district is renowned for its exceptional shopping opportunities and the chance to observe people in action.

Parade Square places fashion and accessories at center stage, while home accents come in a close second.

sightseeing-in-zurich-switzerland

If you happen to be staying outside the downtown area, fret not as getting there is incredibly convenient via the tram system. Coming from someone who seldom relies on public transportation, I can attest to its ease of use.

Tram stations provide instructions in English and accept credit cards. They are maintained well, operate efficiently, and offer a superb means of traversing Zürich. As you journey through the city, do observe the dignified architecture and stunning floral displays that grace its streets.

Lake Zürich

During our Viking River post-cruise excursion, we had the pleasure of embarking on a delightful boat ride around the picturesque Lake Zurich. The boat tour commences from Bürkliplatz and extends for approximately 90 minutes.

With both indoor and outdoor seating options, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the serene lake and majestic, snow-capped mountains.

lake-zurich-boat-ride

Our route led us to the charming medieval town of Rapperswil, featuring a captivating 12th-century castle gracefully perched on a hillside across the lake. If desired, passengers had the flexibility to disembark in Rapperswil and catch a later boat back into town.

Undoubtedly, the boat ride boasts exceptional scenery, allowing guests to relish the rejuvenating fresh air. Moreover, this memorable experience came at no cost for Viking River Cruise guests, ensuring that you seize the opportunity to partake in it.

Our Zürich Hotel

During our Viking River Cruise, we had the pleasure of being accommodated at the Sheraton Zürich Hotel , an elegant and sophisticated establishment situated in a cosmopolitan district. The rooms provide a comfortable sitting area, heavenly beds, an ergonomic desk and work area, a mini-fridge, and a refreshing shower, ensuring a pleasant stay.

To the delight of cruise ship guests, Viking offers a complimentary breakfast in a private space at the hotel, which proved to be a significant money-saving opportunity. Moreover, the Sheraton Hotel’s convenient location near the Toni-Areal tram station opens up a plethora of possibilities for exploring the city.

I love Viking cruises, I had the pleasure of doing one in Portugal. I worked in Switzerland for 3 years and I can tell you that it is a BEAUTIFUL country!

Nice. I'd like to do the Portugal one, too. I visited there on a cruise many years ago and really loved the country. You've had such a fun life. ; )

We've spent quite a bit of time in Switzerland but only about a day in Zurich. You really bring it to life. There are so many things to see when we return. I miss raclette so would definitely seek it out!

It is popping up all over the states this year. In Zurich, we could smell it before we saw it. LOL Thanks for reading!

Been to Zurich numerous times and love the city ... though as you noted it is VERY expensive!!! And the food scene is off the charts, just be sure it is budgeted for. Cheese and chocolate in fondues, spreads, and all sorts of creative variations are enough to drive a foodie nuts. Did you get a chance to make it over to Konstanz by chance and the Bodensee?

Thursday 17th of October 2019

I didn't. This was at the end of our 12 day trip and we were spent. ;) Thanks for the suggestions for next time.

I've only been to Geneva as it is close to my house in the French Alps. I'm a fan of cheese fondue. It's not the healthiest meal but it's very satisfying on a cold winter's day! And the charm of Swiss town is always an attraction!

Your Killing me with all that food Melody! Darcee & I are so excited to take our 1st ever Viking cruise for our honeymoon over New Years Eve up the Danube. Though we wont hit Zurich, we are so excited to see the rest. But with regards to you Zurich land day, what a food extravaganza! I personally would have swapped out that cheese fondue for a chocolate one but that is cause I have a problem...well I don't think it is a problem but essentially I am the cookie monster of chocolate. Love all the buildings around Zurich too. I have only been to Lucerne and that was a long time ago. But I definitely want to return and explore Zurich also.

Nice! What a way to ring in the new year! I know you will love it! The Danube is super fun. When you sail into Budapest at night, just lay your camera, phone, etc. aside and be fully present in the amazing views. It is so freaking incredible and I was nearly moved to tears. Can't wait to follow along! ;)

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Snow caps, ice castles and you… One of the world's favorite year-round playgrounds, Switzerland astounds with natural beauty. In summer, sunlight warms wildflower meadows, picturesque mountain villages and glistening lakes to invite in-depth exploration of some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in Europe.

Hotel schweizerhof, lucerne, tauck exclusive – reception at the jungfraujoch ice palace, enjoy cocktails and more at the "top of europe" with an exclusive private reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.

As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). Private observation car on the Glacier Express

Take in spectacular alpine vistas from our private observation car aboard the glacier express.

Rail travel is one of the best ways to see the Alpine scenery up-close, and the Swiss trains are some of the best in the world. By far the most famous and memorable of these is the Glacier Express, which has connected the major Alpine resort cities of Zermatt and St. Moritz by rail since 1930. Far from being a high-speed train, however, the Glacier Express, due to the sometimes treacherous mountain terrain it has to negotiate, is actually one of the slowest express trains in the world. But you'll travel along silver streams, beneath massive peaks with crystal-blue glaciers and through lush valleys speckled with tiny villages, and the scenery is breathtaking everywhere you look... especially on Tauck's private panoramic observation car aboard this famous train!

Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

Nights 7 and 8

Experience a unique Grand Hotel ambiance overlooking the Jungfrau in Interlaken

To step into a room or suite at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is to sense instinctively that this is a place of well-being, where hospitality is genuine. Here, amidst the mountains of the Bernese Highlands overlooking the Jungfrau, you can benefit from all the amenities of a grand hotel while enjoying the ultimate in privacy, comfort and remarkable service.

I was expecting amazing mountain scenery and I was not disappointed. What surprised me though was the beauty of the many lakes we saw.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Switzerland or Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Switzerland and Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this active journey through the mountains of Switzerland you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Switzerland is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, many centuries old. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition to motor coach travel, this tour itinerary includes several excursions by train, boat and water taxi. Getting on and off these conveyances involves walking and stairs. Also, access to public rest rooms often involves climbing a flight of stairs.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Switzerland has many climactic zones. On this journey, the most temperate weather is found in Geneva and Zürich where the average high temperatures from April through September range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C). The high elevation of Zermatt has lower averages ranging from 45 to 65°F (7 to 18°C). The lake district of Lugano experiences the warmest temperatures ranging from 70 to 85°F (21 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly in moderate amounts throughout the year in Geneva and Zürich. Lugano has considerable rainfall averaging twice the amount of either Geneva or Zurich annually.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in Switzerland is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire, but a sports jacket is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts to dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable. During your visit to the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace, warm, layered clothing is recommended for your comfort as the establishment is located 11,000 ft. above sea level.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are not generally available due to local fire safety regulations; however, valet laundry, dry cleaning and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Switzerland:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

What travelers are saying

"Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That’s Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour.

5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)… many more meals “on your own”… lots of “self-guided” tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about… airline quality “rubber chicken” dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces… poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for.

Speaking to a “Guest Relations” agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the “new” post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers."

Cultural, Small Ship Cruise

"I am a 12 time traveler with Grand Circle and OAT. But maybe no more. They are impossible to reach by phone without waiting for hours. I even tired their emergency phone number and was on hold for hours. What if I had been stranded in a foreign country? They cancelled my Eastern Europe to Black Sea Cruise in Sept 2021 and cited "covid" or "civil unrest" issues. Baloney. They cancelled because they did not sell out the cruise and lied about it to me. I know because I went with Viking during the same month with no excuses like Grand Circle gave me. Add to that they promised me a $1,000 credit on my next trip- which was to Antarctica in December. The invoice they sent me showed the credit- and 1 month later a new invoice arrived with the credit removed. Why? Another lie? Something is really wrong here with the company now and I would suggest be very careful with bookings as they are not the same company I traveled with for the past 12 years."

Switzerland Tour Selection Trips

  • If you want to experience the best of Switzerland, look for tours that include several different types of transportation, including trains, scenic boat rides, and mountain funiculars, all spectacular.
  • Be sure to bring a cell phone or accurate watch: everything leaves on time in Switzerland.
  • If you’re planning on doing some hiking - which you absolutely should, as Switzerland is second to none when it comes to hiking trails and views -  Pack some hiking sticks.
  • Switzerland is not a member of the EU, and still uses Swiss francs as its currency, not the euro.
  • Switzerland is expensive, but a guided tour should ease the cost somewhat – and it’s worth the price in any event.
  • Some tours include side trips to tiny Liechtenstein – a nice, quick stop.
  • Many longer Switzerland tours also visit France, Italy, Austria, and Germany.
  • Lodge stays are a common accommodation type on Switzerland tours. Because it is a mountainous country, prepare accordingly for temperature fluctuations!
  • One often overlooked – but gorgeous -- area of Switzerland is the Interlaken-Wengen region, in the shadow of the Jungfrau; if you see a tour there, grab it.
  • Keep in mind that Switzerland is culturally and linguistically divided into three regions: German, French and Italian, so you may choose tours that visit all three or focus on one or two.

Additional details

Currency in Switzerland

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc. 1 Swiss franc is equal to 1.02 US dollars.

Is Switzerland expensive?

Switzerland has been rated the most expensive country in the world to visit. That said, a budget trip to Switzerland is far from impossible-- there are many nice, clean hostels and smaller hotels for inexpensive accommodation, and train travel is relatively cheap.

If you’re planning on skiing, there are many discounts for ski pass and hotel combinations. Keep on the lookout for train and hotel deals and avoid expensive activities like paragliding and helicopter tours to save money in Switzerland.

Who will enjoy traveling in Switzerland?

Switzerland is a great travel destination for all ages, but the perfect itinerary will depend on age, travel style, and physical abilities. Outdoor enthusiasts will never run out of opportunities for hiking, skiing, kayaking, and other activities in Switzerland, but there are also many nice museums, restaurants, spas, and resorts for those who prefer to take it easy.

Families will benefit from the never-ending list of things to do and the ease of transportation. Despite Switzerland’s reputation for being expensive, it is also a very popular destination for young students and backpackers who want a safe, beautiful, and accessible destination. Because of its safety and ease of travel, it is very popular among solo female travelers.

Winter Vacations in Switzerland

Best cross country ski trips in switzerland.

If you are interested in cross country skiing, consider a guided tour that will take you off a basic trail, and lead you from country to country. For example, ski the Jura mountains from Switzerland to France in 8 days . If you’re a competitive cross country skier and don’t want to worry about logistics on top of your physical preparation, Stride can connect you with trips that include the Engadin Ski Marathon .

If you’re not into skiing, get your Winter thrill at the Bergün toboggan run - one of the unique opportunities to experience this classic Olympic sport. There are also dozens of other activities -- for example, have a meal in the Parsenn igloo village , go ice skating, or head to Schönbühl Spa, the largest brine spa in the world, to warm up.

Switzerland’s Winter Weather

Despite all of the snow, Switzerland’s winters are known for being very palatable, just hovering around freezing in the lowlands. Although colder in the mountains, it is actually sunnier in the winter in Switzerland. For this reason, many skiers and hikers know the delight of stripping off a jacket and hitting the slopes in nothing but a few layers and a wool sweater. The experience is like no other.

Summer Activities in Switzerland

Summer skiing.

If you missed the winter ski season, don’t worry too! Switzerland is one of the only countries where you can continue to ski the Alps in the summer. Several resorts in Switzerland, including Zermaat, Saas Fee, and Verbier, all offer summer skiing packages. Although it’s still warm out, glaciers keep the ground cool and prevent the winter snow from melting away the way. And if you thought it was warm skiing in the winter, imagine being able to ski while wearing a T shirt!

Just remember to pack a good pair of goggles and some sunscreen, the light reflecting off the snow can be very strong.

Electric Biking

If you think Switzerland’s hilly outcrops may not seem like the best place for a bike tour, think again. With the invention of electric bikes, which help give you a significant boost when pedalling, biking Switzerland’s beautiful hills and valleys is a lot more doable and accessible for everyone. Maximize your time in the Alps by going on an E-Bike Tour !

Discounted Switzerland Vacations

Yes, Switzerland is one of the expensive countries in the world. With that being said, there is also more than one way to travel Switzerland on a budget. One of the best ways to save money is to cut back on your lodging. Rather staying in the fanciest Swiss chalet, give up your sauna and check out the tours that offer Basic accommodation .

There are also many free attractions in Switzerland’s cities. Take the free time on your tours to see Bern’s old town, Bellinzona’s three castles, and the permanent collection in Künsthaus Zurich.

Choosing your Switzerland Tour

Switzerland is a destination that appeals to outdoor types, however it’s also famous for resorts and Premium or Luxury travel . Sometimes these are even combined! So there is a fantastic variety of tours to choose from for traveling in Switzerland, in a wide range of budgets.

If you enjoy walking and hiking, especially in the Easy to Moderate realm, you’re sure to find a Switzerland tour to your liking. Most Switzerland tours are active yet easy. And you’ll enjoy beautiful invigorating mountain air, and delightful hospitality throughout your tour.
