Call me dramatic, but what you wear matters – and no; I’m not talking about how great your outfit looks. Think: practical, useful, and climate appropriate clothing that you need in your life. Pay attention, as this is our extensive guide on what to wear on safari in Tanzania .

The climate of Tanzania is considered to be tropical, yet it varies significantly between regions due to the topography. But no matter the time of the year, or your location in Tanzania, you can expect temperatures to fluctuate significantly throughout the day (think hot and humid during the day to cold and chilly at night). Basically you need to have clothing to cater for all seasons.

Temperature wise, the warmest months are between November through February (25–31°C or 77.0–87.8°F) and the colder months are from May to August (15–20°C or 59–68°F). July and August are the country’s coldest, driest months – and is the best time to visit Tanzania. June through September is another period worth planning your trip around, as they are the prime months for viewing migrating wildebeests and elephants November through February

Score some bonus points if they feature zip-off legs and transform to shorts within seconds. If you want to go all the way and complete the look, stick with neutral colours such as khaki, camel, or tan tones.

Similar to the above advice for long pants, you should consider purchasing a comfortable pair of travel shorts for when the temperature rises in the warmer months and long pants just won’t cut it.

If you’re not interested in investing in new shorts or are just generally trying to keep costs down, you can opt for a pair of workout shorts that you may already own. These are sure to keep you cool and most importantly, sweat-free!

Activewear is a staple item in the wardrobe of most travellers around the world, and are perfect no matter the weather. So, why not pack a few pairs of tights, leggings, or sweats for those days when you not only want to dress down but also embrace maximum comfort and control.

Long sleeve tops

If you don’t already own a few long sleeved, sweat-wicking tops, it pays to invest in a few as they are designed to keep you fresh in high temperatures. A skirt or dress

If your safari tour extends all the way through to Zanzibar , you should wear either long trousers, a skirt, or dress, and revealing clothes should be avoided. Hiking boots

If hiking boots aren’t the best option for you, a pair of sneakers will do the trick. All you need is a pair of closed-toe shoes to protect your feet. The bottom line is that bushwalking is a large part of most itineraries, so no matter what they look like, a pair of comfortable, closed-in walking shoes are a must. Even more so, closed-in shoes will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through the bush, and will also act as barrier protection against bites or stings from dangerous animals in this environment.

Forget about it – unless you decide you cannot live without your favourite pair of jeans. Considering denim takes ages to air dry while often being too warm to wear in the day, they are not ideal. Like we said, wear whatever is most appropriate for you, yet if you can avoid packing thick, denim jeans, then definitely do that.

The animals of the Serengeti won’t notice whether you’re repping a full face of makeup; and neither will the rest of your group. Of course, do what makes you feel your version of comfortable but at least be certain to layer on a strong sunscreen.

Formal outfits

Even at the the luxury safari lodges, the dress code will be far from formal. Save a few clean shirts to wear at night, and a nice pair of pants or a skirt for the evening, but above all, make sure you’re comfortable!

Expensive jewellery

A big sparkly pair of diamond earrings or a large watch is out of place in the bush, so it’s best to leave these at home. You also don’t want to be the only one loudly jingling and jangling when you’re trying to approach the more timid creatures of Tanzania.

Other miscellaneous items to pack

• Breathable, thermal layers (season dependent)
• Pyjamas to wear at night
• Gloves (depending on the season)
• Beanie (depending on the season)

What To Wear On Safari: My Detailed Safari Packing List With Photos

You’ve all seen the brochure photos: a smiling family is sitting at a camping table in the middle of the African bush. Behind them, the sun is setting, and perhaps a giraffe is crossing the savanna landscape.

What are they wearing? I’m sure you can picture it: lightweight designer safari gear, all matching, in indistinguishable shades of beige, taupe and camel. Maybe the dad is wearing khaki chinos and the mum has a floppy-brimmed hat (colour: putty) on her head. They all have sand-coloured lace-up boots on, and from head to toe all their clothes are pristine, clean, and crease-free.

If it’s your first time figuring out what to wear on safari, it might feel like this is the model you have to follow. Like, having booked the blindingly expensive trip of a lifetime, you now have to go out and splurge hundreds more on the ‘proper’ kit, otherwise people will laugh at you and you may even get into trouble for not doing it right.

Well I’m here to reassure you: that’s rubbish.

What should you wear on safari?

I’ve been on five safaris (to Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , Uganda and South Africa) and I still don’t own any ‘official’ safari clothes. I’ve always worn stuff I already own and been just fine.

That said, there are some dos and don’ts about packing for a safari, some things it’s a good idea to make sure you bring with you, and some stuff you should definitely leave at home.

So welcome to my complete safari packing guide. I’m going to go through a few points and FAQs, and then make a handy list at the end. Scroll down if you just want to skip ahead to that.

What happens on a safari?

Days on safari follow a similar schedule. You wake early and head out shortly after sunrise for a morning activity – usually a game drive but sometimes a boat cruise, guided walk, or scenic flight.

You return to the camp mid-morning for brunch and have some hours to relax in the heat of the day before heading out again for another activity later in the afternoon. Your afternoon game drive or boat cruise normally ends with sunset drinks in a beautiful location, before you head back to the camp for dinner.

After dinner you might sit round the campfire or boma enjoying a few drinks with your fellow guests, but most people go to bed fairly early, ready for another dawn start the next day.

What to wear on safari during the day

The most important thing to note is that a safari is not a fashion show. It can be hot and dusty, or rainy and muddy, so it’s important to dress for comfort and practicality, so leave the designer gear, luxury fabrics and bling jewellery at home. Instead, bring stuff that washes easily, dries quickly and hides the dirt well!

You’ll also be coating yourself daily in suncream and insect repellent, so don’t bring anything that won’t mix well with those!

When I was in Botswana in December, some days reached 40 degrees C (104 F) with high humidity, so think lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton, viscose or sweat-wicking sportswear, or even linen if you don’t mind the creases).

T-shirts and shorts are your friends, but I’d avoid strappy vests for two reasons:

• Many African countries are quite conservative, and it doesn’t do to flash a lot of skin.
• The sun is extremely strong and the more skin you show, the more of you there is to get burned, even in a shaded safari car.

What to wear on a game drive or boat cruise

On wildlife viewing trips you’ll be sitting in a car for several hours, so it’s important to be comfortable. T-shirts and shorts are a great option.

Early mornings in Africa can be chilly, so bring a long-sleeved shirt, light sweater or jacket just in case.

Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Safari cars have roofs, but sometimes the roof rolls back so you can stand up, and when the sun is low in the sky it can shine in from the side very strongly. I was surprised by how much I ended up needing my hat.

Since you won’t be walking around much, light sneakers or sandals are fine.  

Safari cars are open-sided, so if it rains you may get a bit wet. Most safari companies carry ponchos in the car, to hand out to guests when it rains, but you might want to bring your own light waterproof raincoat just in case.

What to wear on a walking safari

For a walking safari the principles are the same, but you should wear long trousers to prevent your legs being cut or scratched by branches, and closed-toed shoes to protect you from biting or stinging animals or insects.

Although walking safaris can sometimes last for three or four hours, you don’t actually walk that far because there’s a lot of stopping and looking at stuff. So you don’t need hiking boots; comfortable trainers or walking shoes are fine. If you’re travelling in rainy season you might want to bring waterproof or Gore-Tex ones.

Do I need warm clothes on safari?

We think of Africa as being hot, and it is, but it can also be extremely cold. If you travel during the northern hemisphere summer, that’s winter in most of Africa, and temperatures can drop below freezing especially in desert areas, if you’re at altitude, and the further south you go.

In Botswana and South Africa during the winter, average nighttime temperatures can be 0 or even -2 degrees C (28-32 F), and remember that most safari cabins and tents are not heated!

Even in Kenya, which is much closer to the equator and therefore not as cold, nights and early mornings can definitely be chilly.

Staff in camps will provide you with hot water bottles and blankets both in your tent and on game drives, but you still need to bring warm clothes with you as well.

If you’re travelling to the southern African countries between April and October, I’d recommend bringing at least one pair of long trousers, one long-sleeved top, one jumper, and a packable down jacket.

But remember to dress in layers, as the day quickly warms once the sun’s up, and even if it’s close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up to high 20s (70+ F) or more.

It’s very important to check the weather forecast before you travel, as different regions’ climates can vary.

What colour should you wear on safari?

It’s recommended that you wear plain designs in neutral, earthy or natural colours, such as shades of beige, grey, brown or natural greens.

Avoid vibrant, bright colours like orange, red and yellow, or vivid patterns. This is for two reasons:

• It helps to make you less noticeable to animals.
• You can get pretty dusty on safari, and natural shades don’t show the dirt so much!

Bright white and full black are also not recommended. This is not only because they show the dust really badly, but because many animals actually only see in black and white, and large gleaming white shapes or dark black ones are very noticeable to them.

With that all said, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and you certainly don’t need to rush out and buy an entire new wardrobe full of khaki and beige. As I just mentioned, many animals only see in black and white, and when you’re inside the car, most only see the car as one large object, and not the people inside.

It’s more important to stick to the rules when you’re on a walking safari and don’t have the protection of the car.

But in general, if you pack plain, neutral-ish colours, you’ll be fine.

Why not wear blue on safari?

Some people recommend not wearing blue on safari. Apart from being a pretty noticeable bright colour, it’s said to attract tsetse flies, which are prevalent in some areas of southern Africa and can deliver a nasty bite and spread disease. They are also thought to prefer black (another reason not to wear it).

That said, my light down jacket is bright blue, and I also took a blue t-shirt and a pale blue cardigan to Kenya, and I wore all three with no problems.

What to wear on safari evenings

Most people like to dress up when they go on holiday, so you might think about throwing a few glamorous dresses, high heels or some party shirts into your suitcase.

But you probably won’t wear them. Even in the luxury camps, most people really don’t dress up for dinner, for four main reasons:

• At night it’s a good idea to cover your arms and legs to avoid insect bites, so floaty skirts and strappy tops are a bad idea.
• It can get quite chilly at night, so you’ll probably be more comfortable in trousers and a fleece anyway.
• You’ll be tired after a long day and an early start; you’ll probably find you can’t be bothered to dress for dinner as you’ll be going to bed soon afterwards anyway.
• Walking round camp after dark you may run into snakes or spiders, and paths can be muddy and uneven, so high-heels are a definite no-no.

When I was in Botswana in December (the height of their summer) it was still 30+ degrees (86 F) in the evening, so I wore lightweight trousers or a long casual dress and then liberally coated myself with insect repellent. In Kenya in September it was a bit cooler, around low 20s (70 F), so I wore trousers, a t-shirt and a light cardigan, and had my jacket handy for later in the evening as the temperature dropped.

Is it OK to wear jeans on safari?

It’s perfectly fine to bring a pair of jeans for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling in winter when you know it will be chilly at night.

However jeans aren’t recommended for game drives as you’ll probably be too hot in them during the day, and if you need to wash them they’ll take ages to dry.

As a general rule I wouldn’t take jeans on safari but instead bring lightweight trousers. The convertible zip-off ones that turn into shorts are especially good as you can have long pants for cold mornings and safari walks, and convert them into shorts once the day’s warmed up.

Pro tip: Whatever you choose to bring, make sure you have some ‘room to grow’! The food on safari is usually really good and you won’t be doing much exercise, so stretchy waistbands are a good idea!

Can you wear leggings on safari?

Yes, absolutely. Leggings are a great thing to bring on safari because they’re lightweight, wash and dry easily, are comfortable, and protect you from bugs and the sun. Just stick to neutral colours and leave the snazzy activewear designs at home!

I always pack a pair of leggings for safari – and if there’s a gym in the hotel then I can also use them for a workout!

What are the best shoes to wear on safari?

As I mentioned above, high heels and smart shoes are definitely not the thing to bring on safari. For game drives it’s fine to wear sandals or light sneakers, and for safari walks you want closed-toed comfortable walking shoes.  You definitely don’t need to buy special safari boots, no matter what the sales people might say.

If your lodge or hotel has a pool, you might want to bring some flipflops (also handy to have for walking around in your tent at night, or for nipping to the bathroom block if you’re staying in a campsite).

Can you wear trainers on safari?

Yes, absolutely. I always pack a pair of Asics Gore-Tex trail trainers that I wear for exercise, when it’s muddy or raining, and for walking or hiking. On game drives and boat cruises, and for walking around the camp in the evening, I have a pair of Skechers Go-Walk sneakers that are super comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

What to pack for the beach in Kenya or Tanzania

Many people like to combine their safari with a few days on the beach, perhaps in Zanzibar in Tanzania, or at Diani or Vipingo in Kenya .

Here’s where you will get the chance to dress up a bit – as if you’re staying in a nice hotel or beach resort destination, there will definitely be opportunities to put on a strappy dress, holiday shirt, or some sparkly sandals.

If you’re planning to hit the beach for a few days at the end of your trip, you’ll definitely want to throw in one or two nice evening outfits. And don’t forget swimwear and a beach cover-up too!

Can you wash clothes on safari?

This is a very important question, and the answer is yes! Almost all safari lodges and camps offer a laundry service and most of the time it’s included in the price of your stay. So you can wash your clothes as often as you like at no extra cost – which means you really don’t need to bring huge amounts of luggage as you can wash and re-wear your clothes several times.

Note that in many places the laundry is done by hand by the hotel staff, dried out in the sun, and ironed using an old-fashioned coal iron. This is yet another reason not to bring anything too delicate or precious, as there’s a small chance it may get damaged during the laundry process.

What sort of underwear should I bring for safari?

Ladies: remember that you may spend many hours bouncing around over unsealed and bumpy roads in the back of a safari car. Being quite an athletic build, this is not something that’s ever bothered me, but I’ve been reliably informed by more curvy girls that a sports bra can be a life-saver in this situation. So if you’re particularly susceptible to bouncing, bring sports bras!

It’s also important to note that the people who handwash your clothes are usually male, and for cultural and hygiene reasons they won’t wash women’s underwear. Ladies will need to bring a small amount of hand wash (though sometimes laundry soap is provided) and wash your own pants and bras in the basin. For this reason it’s a good idea not to bring anything too fancy or delicate: lightweight, quick-drying microfibre underwear is best.

Other things to pack for safari

Of course, packing is not all about clothes. Here are a few other things you won’t want to forget (more in the complete packing list below):

Camera, spare batteries, chargers, plug adapters

Can you imagine going all that way on safari on the trip of a lifetime and then forgetting your phone charger or camera? I know, I’d die!

So definitely make sure you pack all your gadgets, and all the cables and plugs you’ll need to make them work! And then bring spares!

Often hotel rooms and safari tents only have a limited number of plug sockets, so if you have loads of gadgets, it’s a good idea to bring a multi-socket splitter. I recommend one with surge protection : power cuts can happen frequently and if there’s a surge when the power comes back, your devices can get fried. This happened to me the night before my Tanzania safari , so now I’m extra careful!

Medication and toiletries

Most of the places you’ll be staying will be out in the bush, with limited access to shops. Make sure you bring all the toiletries, medicines and personal items you’ll need, as once you leave the airport, opportunities to replace anything that’s missing will be very limited.

Do you need malaria tablets for safari?

Large parts of Africa have malaria, including popular safari countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, so it’s very likely that you may need to take malaria tables on safari. I usually take doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone, but may not be suitable for everyone so speak to your pharmacist or travel clinic.

Some countries also require you to have a proof of yellow fever vaccination – you can check if this is needed on the website above as well. For example, places like Kenya and Tanzania won’t let you in without proof of vaccination if you’ve spent time in a yellow-fever-risk country before arriving. If you have already had your yellow fever jab, make sure you pack the certificate!

What to wear for safari in Tanzania

Best suitcase for safari

This is important, so pay attention! Many safaris involve internal transfers by tiny plane or even helicopter. They all have pretty strict packing rules, with a maximum of 15 kg weight per person and no hard-shelled suitcases allowed. Luggage must be soft sided, and don’t overpack! You shouldn’t need to anyway, since you can wash everything when you’re there.

Wheels are OK as long as it’s a soft bag, so I recommend a soft holdall with or without wheels, or a wheely backpack like the one I have and love . This one came to Kenya and Botswana with me with no trouble at all.

Packing for safari for photographers

If, like me, you’re travelling with 15 kg of camera gear, don’t stress. The little internal plane operators are used to photographers and will let you put your backpack of gear at the back of the plane. I travelled with 15 kg of hold luggage and another 15 kg of camera gear around Botswana and Kenya, and it was never an issue.

What should you NOT take on safari?

Now I’ve told you all the things you should bring on safari, here are a few things it’s a good idea to leave at home.

Perfume: No one in your safari car will thank you for dosing yourself liberally with Eau de Whatever, and if you wear a very strong scent it may even allow animals to detect you sooner and run away faster.

Hairdryer: Many safari camps run on solar power and cannot support a hairdryer. Those that can (if they’re on the grid, or running off a generator), will usually provide one that’s suited to the electricity supply. As I said, no one really worries too much about their appearance or cares about what your hair looks like on safari anyway.

Camouflage clothing: This might surprise you, but wearing military-style camo print clothing is a no-no in many African countries, where it’s associated with the military. It’s actually illegal to wear camo gear in Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Plastic bags: Disposable plastic bags are banned in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. You should be fine with the little zip-lock one for your liquids on the plane, and I’ve used reusable plastic packing bags many times with no problems, but try to keep plastic bags to a minimum or you may get a fine.

A drone: Unless you have special permission, drones are not allowed in most lodges and African National Parks.

Expensive watches, jewellery, and other valuable items: This doesn’t just apply to African safaris but to all travel. Jewellery can easily get lost, damaged or stolen, so if you care about it, leave it at home.

A hard-shelled suitcase: As mentioned above, all safari companies ask you to bring a soft bag or at most a wheeled soft holdall , as these are much easier to pack into the small luggage spaces on planes and in cars. You will not be thanked if you bring rigid-sided luggage.

Where to buy safari clothing

For the most part, you don’t need any specialist clothing for safari. You can wear your own normal clothes. However, there are some great companies that do excellent clothes for travel, in suitable colours, and made from practical fabrics that are sweat-wicking, comfortable and don’t crease.

My favourite brands for travel clothes are The North Face , Patagonia , Rab , Mountain Equipment , Arc’teryx and Craghoppers , and my favourite places to shop in the UK are Ellis Brigham and Cotswold Outdoor , which stock all these brands at competitive prices, have high-street stores where you can get advice and try stuff on, and often have good end-of-season sales too.

What to wear on safari: my Africa packing list

So now we’ve gone through the details, here’s what I would pack for a 10-day or two-week safari in Africa.

What to wear on safari: Clothes

• T-shirts in neutral or earthy colours x 5. The green t-shirt in the photo above is by Mountain Equipment . I love it so much I bought three!
• Long trousers x 1 pair. I really like my lightweight ones from The North Face .
• Shorts x 1 pair.
• Convertible trousers that zip-off into shorts, or a second pair of shorts . North Face and Craghoppers both do good convertible trousers for men and women .
• Leggings . I’m a big fan of Sweaty Betty.
• Long-sleeved shirt for covering up in bright sunshine.
• Lightweight jumper or cardigan for chilly evenings.
• Lightweight jacket , fleece or mid layer for cold nights. I have a fleece from Arc’teryx and a mine is a Nano puff from  Patagonia .
• Waterproof jacket . I have two, a lovely Zeta LT by  Arc’teryx  and a packable Meridien jacket by  Rab .
• Dress or smart shirt for the evening if you’re going to a city or the beach (x2). For packable jersey or lightweight viscose dresses I love Boden , Sugarhill Brighton and Joanie Clothing .
• Gym kit – if you think you’ll need or use it. But many safari camps don’t have fitness equipment and you can’t go for a run in the bush or you might get chased by a predator!
• Sports bras or comfortable wireless bralettes x 3.
• Underwear x 7. If you’re staying for longer you’ll need to handwash. I recommend something quick-drying and non-delicate like these microfibre ones from M&S .
• Swimwear . I get cute bikinis and swimwear from M&S , Next , or Pour Moi .
• Sarong or cover up (if you’re spending time on the beach)
• Sandals or flip flops . I love my walking sandals by Teva .
• Trainers or walking shoes for exercise and walking safaris. Mine are Gore-Tex trail trainers from Asics .
• Soft sneakers for walking round the camp, game drives and boat cruises. I’m a big fan of Skechers Go Walks .

Pro tip: if you’re going to the beach and plan to do a lot of snorkelling, pack a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in. The sun is super strong and we all got very burnt even though we were wearing Factor 50!

What to pack for safari in winter

If the forecast is for cold weather, I would add:

• Another long-sleeved top or baselayer .
• A warmer, packable insulated jacket .
• A pair of jeans.
• Beanie hat.

What to pack for safari: Accessories

• Baseball cap or hat. My cap is this one this one by Buff and I really like it.
• Scarf or buff to keep dust off (and you can dip it in water to cool you down on very hot days)
• Headphones or ear buds (for the plane), you won’t need them on the actual safari! I have these ones which are pretty good and much cheaper than Apple ones.
• Eye mask and ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper).
• Camera, batteries, memory cards and charger
• Charger cables for all your devices
• Portable phone charger. Mine is this one from Anker .
• Plug adapter for the country you’re going to, or a universal plug adapter
• Plug splitter or 3-way adapter with surge protection
• Refillable water bottle (though some safari companies provide them, so check). An insulated water bottle will keep your water colder for longer on hot days.
• A padlock for your luggage to protect you from airport thieves

Safari packing list: Toiletries

As well as all your usual toiletries and medications, don’t forget:

• Suncream. I swear by  Riemann P20  because it’s hard wearing and you only need to apply it once a day. Or for the best face SPF you will ever find, that’s non-greasy and non-orange (!), I love  this one from the Body Shop .
• Insect repellant (though this is often provided in camp).
• Malaria tablets ( check to see if these are required in your destination )

Pro tip: Luggage goes missing more and more frequently these days, so pack your medication or anything else vital in your hand luggage.

What to wear on your Tanzania Safari

Planning what to wear and essentials to bring on your upcoming safari in Tanzania is not all that complicated. Everything you need is most likely in your closet already! Our clothing suggestions apply for all seasons on a Tanzania safari while different guidelines apply if your route is to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro or heading down to the famous Zanzibar beach.

Tanzania Weather

The best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the Dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July and the time to see the wildebeest calving is late January to February. Tanzania’s main rainy season, or the ‘long rains’, last during about March, April, and May.

What kinds of clothes are recommended for safari?

Recommended safari clothing to bring

• T-shirts and tank tops
• Long-sleeved shirts (for protection from sunburns)
• Light long pants or convertible long-short pants
• Warm fleece pullover or jacket
• One swimsuit
• Cotton socks and underwear
• One pair of comfortable walking shoes
• One pair of sandals or flip-flops
• Wide-brimmed hat
• Bandana (for dust)
• Heavy sweater, gloves, and toque if traveling in the cold season (June – August)

Clothing for Zanzibar

Please dress modestly when sightseeing in Stone Town or visiting anywhere outside of the beach resorts in Zanzibar. Women should not wear sleeveless or revealing tops and short skirts or thigh-high shorts (Capri trousers or at least knee-length shorts are fine). Men should wear shirts, pants or knee-length shorts.

What are some other items to pack?

Pack light! Here are the top things to bring with you on a safari:

What to wear for travel in tanzania: complete packing list.

The land of the vast Serengeti, the great Kilimanjaro and the beautiful island of Zanzibar, Tanzania really does seem to have it all!

From the continent’s highest mountain to one of its most popular safari destinations and some of Africa’s most beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise more and more of us are travelling to this East Africa gem.

But what to wear when you are there?

And how to pack to cover all eventualities?

Here to help you out is my ultimate guide to what to wear and pack for the best Tanzania travel adventure.

Having backpacked solo through this country (and the rest of East Africa too), you can rest assured this list is based on personal experience and not just pie-in-the-sky guestimations!

The only topic I don’t cover in detail is climbing Kilimajrio, because while this packing list will cover you for most hiking circumstances – there’s no doubt you’ll need specialist equipment to tackle the giant of Kili – which your tour organiser is best placed to fill you in on.

And with that disclaimer out the way, it’s time to launch in!

How to pack light for tanzania.

Before I get onto the actual checklist of what you should pack for your trip to Tanzania, I wanted to write a quick few tips to cover some specific questions you might have.

First up this packing list is designed to be lightweight i.e. it’s ideal for backpackers, but also for anyone else heading to this country who doesn’t want to haul massive suitcases around.

If you’re moving about Tanzania, which you definitely should, then lugging massive bags on and off safari vehicles, buses or flights is simply no fun, so this packing list is designed to make sure you have everything you need for every inch of this country, without being too weighed down!

And if you manage to condense your stuff down well, then this whole Tanzania packing list below should fit into a 40-50l backpack.

I never take anything bigger, even when I’m travelling for 6 months at a time, so you’ve got no excuse!

This 50l Atmos backpack from Osprey makes a great option and would be brilliantly accompanied by some good packing cubes!

Yes these guys are the answer to all your packing problems my friends, and if you want to compress your gear to take up less space, as well as have it nicely organised, I highly suggest you get some!

I absolutely love these  packing cubes and personally would never consider heading off to East Africa, or indeed anywhere, without them.

What to Wear on a Tanzania Safari?

So while we’re on the subject of keeping the luggage weight down, it’s worth pointing out that the main checklist below does detail everything you need if you plan to safari in Tanzania too, which I highly suggest you do!

The main overall advice here is to bring layers that are thin but still protect you from humidity, harsh UV rays and insects etc.

A thin, light waterproof / windproof jacket will be very handy when packing for a safari at dawn or dusk and, as always, I recommend garments with lots of pockets so you have easy access to things like tissues, camera, sanitiser, snacks etc.

A silk sleeping bag liner will also be useful, especially if you enjoying any multi-day safaris on a budget, most of which involve camping.

And no matter whether you’re tackling a big adventure safari in a remote park, or just a day activity close to Moshi or Arusha, an active camera like the Go Pro will be ideal with its waterproof, compact and durable attributes.

What to Wear in Zanzibar?

If you’re visiting the capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town (which you definitely should by the way!), then you’ll need to dress more conservatively in this traditional town, which has a majority Muslim population.

I’d advise leggings with a tunic over the top, or trousers with a T-shirt.

I found it ok to have my arms exposed here, but certainly, you’ll want to cover your shoulders, chest and legs to feel more respectful and comfortable.

Sandals were fine as footwear and there’s no need to cover your head with anything.

In the coastal resorts of Zanzibar however, it’s a different story, with things a lot more relaxed.

Where I was in Paje , swimwear, shorts, singlets, sarongs were all completely acceptable on the beach and in my accommodation.

I just dressed more conservatively when I was visiting the town in Paje – to go to the shops or get a taxi for example.

What to Wear on a Flight to Tanzania?

It’s also worth taking some time to think about what to wear on a flight over to Tanzania.

Making sure these items tie in as much as possible with the checklist below will help you keep your packing light, as you won’t be doubling up or carrying any unnecessary pieces you won’t wear again until the flight home.

Quite simply, layers are key.

You never know how hot or cold a plane might be and if you want to get some sleep, comfy clothing is king.

This is especially true given flights to Tanzania from Europe, Australia, New Zealand or North America are usually long haul (around 7hours+), so I’d certainly advise wearing things you feel at ease in.

Ladies, I always wear leggings on long-haul flights and love these natural bamboo fibre ones from Boody , which I now never travel without!

I generally pair them with either a thin cotton top or dress (depending how much coverage you want), and then also take a sweater and a scarf on the plane for extra cosy layers.

The travel wraps from Sholdit , which have hidden security pockets, are perfect for travel adventures and I love mine!

A travel pillow will also help you here and I love this one , which I just bought and I’m already in love with thanks to its memory foam, high-sided design.

Alternatively, if leggings aren’t your thing, then loose-fitting jeans or comfy cargo pants might be a good option, with a t-shirt and thin sweater on top.

Complete Tanzania Packing List

And so finally here it is, my item by item checklist for exactly what to pack and wear in Tanzania…

1x Thin Waterproof / Windproof Jacket

Set in the tropics, Tanzania can be wet and humid (even when it’s warm), which means thin layers are crucial when it comes to staying dry without overheating.

Taking a thinner jacket that you can layer on or off when being active also makes a lot of sense.

I love the North Face Venture 2 .

1x Thick Hoodie / Sweater

Tanzania rarely gets cold, but after a rainstorm, if you’re up for a dawn hike or you’re post-diving, you might want to feel a bit snug.

As such, 1 thicker jumper is nice to take with you – I suggest wearing one on the plane anyway.

A good activewear one, like this Columbia fleece is well suited to the job as it is designed for outdoor travel and perfect for safari and camping adventures.

2x Thin Long-Sleeved Tops

Good for cooler days or when safari-ing at dawn, dusk, or night, thin long-sleeved tops are also good when you need to layer up, as they can be worn under thicker jumpers.

Choosing natural fibre options, like cotton, is a good choice for budget vs comfort.

It will also reduce the amount you sweat.

Thin tops also make for an excellent hiking base layer if you do want to scale any mountains!

7x Singlets / T-Shirts

Choose tops that match the trousers / leggings / shorts you pack and consider quick-dry options.

T-shirts are good for covering shoulders and offering sun protection in the tropical climate of Tanzania.

1x Pair Long Pants / Trousers

Great for going out in the evening or wandering around towns when it’s rainy, a pair of versatile trousers are a must when it comes to what to pack for East African countries like Tanzania.

I think 1 is enough, if you ensure it will cover a wide range of activities from strolling to going out in the evening to nature time.

Tanzania is quite conservative in certain areas and all locals tend to wear longer items of clothing that at least stretch to the knee, As such, you may feel more comfortable doing the same – especially in cities or spots with a strong Islamic culture, such as Stone Town .

Just make sure any trousers you bring are thin, as this country is rarely cold!

1-2x Pairs Leggings / Hiking Pants

One of my travel essentials, leggings are so helpful for putting under trousers if cold, for hiking or exercising, for being comfortable, for extra nightwear or for under a casual dress in the evening.

My advice is always to take at least 1 pair and make them bamboo fibre ones if poss, as these guys are soft, light, comfortable, breathable, quick-dry and hypoallergenic… what’s not to love?!

If you don’t like leggings, hiking trousers or loose-fitting pants will do fine instead, as they are also good for travel days and if you plan to undertake any volunteer work.

2x Pairs Shorts

You’re going to need something to wear during those hot beach days in Tanzania, especially if you’re in the country to dive or generally live it up by the ocean!

2x Light Dresses

Again a good item for beach days.

Or if you want to dress up a bit during the evening, you can pair this over a pair of leggings.

You see, so versatile!

8x Pairs Underwear

Small and compact, 8 pairs will save you a lot of handwashing!

2x Bras + 2x Sports Bra

Small to pack and great for those bumpy safari rides, I really love this black, supportive sports bra from Nike .

4x Pairs Socks

Make sure you take socks of various lengths / thickness, including ankle socks for city days and good, non-blister over the ankle socks for hiking and nature activities.

I always recommend a couple of sarongs whenever I travel because they are so versatile.

Great for hiking, lying on the beach, using as a thin sheet at night or trying to keep your neck protected from the sun, the list of uses for the humble sarong goes on and on!

1x Cap / Sun Hat

Having something to shield your face, neck and ears from the strong UV rays that are very prevalent in Tanzania is a must, especially when you might be exposed to them for long periods of time if you’re hitting some national parks / hiking / volunteering / on safari etc.

2x Bikinis / Swimwear

Well, you need something to enjoy those fabulous beaches with that’s for sure!

Hopefully they’ll get so much use, you’ll see packing 2 pairs as a worthy use of space!

1x Pair Sunglasses

Make sure your sunglasses are UV-protected and consider prescription ones if you wear glasses usually.

You can always double up on your daywear here to save room!

Otherwise, thin and light cotton shorts and a top will do the job.

1x Pair Hiking Boots

Depending on your plans, either hiking boots, hiking shoes or trail runners will do when it comes to packing for Tanzania.

Personally, I’d opt for something lighter in Tanzania, as the tropical climate here definitely means you want something breathable.

That said, if you’re perhaps heading to Kenya on a walking safari , or Uganda to trek with the Gorillas as well as travel in Tanzania, then you’ll definitely want something more heavy-duty.

1x Pair Trainers / Runners

Good sturdy sneakers for exploring cities and towns on foot are crucial in Tanzania.

These New Balance black cross-trainers are great all-rounders and won’t show up a lot of dirt.

1x Pair Flip Flops / Sandals

Personally I’d never travel anywhere without my Arizona Birkenstocks and neither should you!

The support they provide is awesome and that’s definitely something you’ll need for the uneven terrain and streets in Tanzania!

Thin Toiletries Bag with Hook

A light, thin wash bag is essential for keeping the weight in your backpack down.

And one with a hook makes it easy to hang up in small bathrooms or when out in nature.

This one is a great, cheap option.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

I always go for shampoo and conditioner bars when I travel to save the plastic and keep the space down.

Although they are a bit pricey, they last for ages.

Say goodbye to mid-travel spillages and bulky bottles people, this is the eco-friendly future!

Anti-Bacterial Soap

Keep in ziplock bag to prevent from getting soap slime on everything you own!

I suggest an anti-bacterial bar as they are great for keeping you clean in tropical climates where you’re likely to be sweating a bit!

I always pack a natural crystal deodorant as they last forever (great if you’re travelling for a few months) and are free from many nasty chemicals.

They are also the only thing that stops me sweating in the tropical heat… lovely!

Face Cleanser, Serum, Toner & Moisturiser

Great for bringing your skin back to life after days in the strong sun.

Good Sunscreen

Choose a 30 SPF or higher for those super strong rays in Tanzania and go natural if you can to keep the chemicals out of your skin.

Insect Repellent

I recommend a strong product for Tanzania to keep yourself protected against malaria and dengue fever.

This doubles as a great moisturiser, soother and aftersun – much needed in East Africa.

Buy some organic Aloe Vera here .

SPF Lip Salve

Very important for those strong UV conditions and keeping your lips healthy and happy.  

Tea-Tree Essential Oil

A powerful antiseptic, anti-mould and anti-fungal treatment, tea-tree essential oil is also great to throw with your clothes washing (just a few drops) and ideal for freshening up smelly bags / laundry etc.

Get an organic tea-tree oil if you can.

An ideal remedy for headaches, sore muscles and insect bites, tiger balm is super versatile and a must on any Tanzania packing list, especially if the mosquitoes love you as much as me!

Paracetamol, Anti-Septic Cream, Rehydration Salts, Imodium, Anti-Inflammatories, Anti-Histamines & Band-Aids

Menstrual Cup

The best way to deal with your time of the month when travelling ladies.

Definitely needed for hiking, sightseeing and active safari days, this Kompressor from Marmot is perfect for the job as it’s super featherweight and packs down to nothing.

Literally an ideal item for your Tanzania packing list.

Combination Padlock

Very useful for locking up bags and valuables when staying in hostels or on bus rides, these don’t have to be expensive, just reliable!

Best to get a TSA-approved one in case of any hassle at the airport.

Filter Water Bottle

Try not to add to the world’s plastic problem and consider travelling with a filter water bottle like this one from LifeStraw .

Not only does this mean you can safely and easily drink the tap water in Tanzania, but it will also save you the money and hassle of having to continuously buy bottled water.

Much cheaper and more environmentally friendly, the LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottles have an amazing technology that filters out 99.9% of harmful bacteria and the filter lasts for 4000 litres, which means you’ll likely only have to replace it once a year!

Travel Handwash & Washing Line

Great for doing emergency washing, such as underwear in a sink, travel handwash is always a must when I backpack anywhere.

So useful in Tanzania if you’re diving or travelling during the rainy season!

These small and compact guys are great for keeping your electricals equipment safe and dry.

Silk Sleeping Bag Liner

Personally, I wouldn’t bother with a full sleeping bag if you’re travelling in Tanzania, it’s just too hot to warrant it most of the year!

That said, a silk liner, which will keep you snug at night and actually stop you sweating is the perfect alternative, plus it’s lighter and less bulky to carry too.

The caveat here is if you’re climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – see my disclaimer in the intro!

Lots of people say you don’t need this, but I find it very helpful.

Choose a light, inexpensive one and make sure it has a bottle opener, corkscrew and knife – like this .

When you’re out in nature in Tanzania, a multi-tool can come in very helpful.

Mosquito Net

Great to have for those times when the one provided is less than adequate, or when you want to sleep under the stars but still not get bitten!

A travel mosquito net is a must on your Tanzania packing list.

Toilet Paper 

Take the cardboard centre and condense these bad boys!

Multiple packs of biodegradable ones… I’ve never used so many in my life!

Electricals

Smartphone & Headphones

Taking your smartphone to stay in touch with those at home, check maps, book accommodation and upload some pics while you’re in Tanzania is a great idea.

You can easily buy a cheap SIM when you get to the country and it’s good to know that data packages and network coverage here are generally excellent and very affordable too.

I’d also download some audiobooks and music onto your phone before you leave home – a great idea for journey days.

I recommend Amazon Audible and Spotify Premium for these purposes and wouldn’t travel without either these days.

Portable Charger

Portable chargers are great when travelling, especially if you’re out sightseeing and snapping all day and worried about your phone or camera battery lasting.

I recommend the Anker Powercore – it’s light, compact and charges devices super quickly.

I love my Sony A600 mirrorless camera , which I used throughout my travels in East Africa and beyond.

Compact and sturdy, it’s perfect for travelling.

A GoPro is also a great idea to help capture the more active adventures you might have in this country such as hiking, safari-ing or diving.

It’s also great for video!

Lens, Spare Battery, Memory Cards, Chargers & Cables

All essentials for the camera and / or the GoPro.

Tanzania uses European style outlets, so get a Skross World Adapter that won’t fail you.

Headlamp & Spare Batteries

I never travel anywhere without a headlamp and recommend you choose a product that uses commonly found batteries and has a red night light function to avoid the bugs.

I love my Black Diamond number , which has served me very well across East Africa, especially during those occasional power cuts!

You can easily get an affordable pair like these Binoteck ones, which are ideal for safari.

Documents & Paperwork

Passport & Photocopies

Definitely take a colour copy of your passport and keep it on your person at all times.

Taking a photo of your passport and storing it safely on your smartphone / cloud storage is also a good idea.

Visa Documentation

Depending where you’re from of course, you may or may not need this for Tanzania.

Most European, Aussie, Kiwi and North American passport holders get a visa on entry via a stamp obtained at both land and air border points.

Immunisation Documentation

Always good to have with you wherever you travel, it’s a smart idea to check whether you need your Yellow Fever jab for Tanzania.

Travel Insurance Policy

What to Wear on Safari • Ultimate Safari Outfit Packing List

You’ve booked your dream trip; an African safari. And now, the slight panic sets in because… what do you wear on safari? You’ve seen in documentaries people in head to toe tan, with dirt-covered boots and mosquito nets, but is actually what the ideal safari outfit looks like? I’m going to help you put together multiple safari outfit ideas so that you are dressed in a safe, functional, and maybe even cute way for this safari trip! So settle in and let’s look at some Africa safari outfits.

I specifically went to Tanzania for my 7-day safari, but these rules for a recommended safari outfit are pretty applicable to almost any safari in Africa (aside from gorilla trekking).

And before we get started,  I may receive commission  if you make a purchase from some of the links in this list. However I promise I would never recommend something to you that I didn’t personally love. So these items are all vetted through yours truly and are 100% perfect for a safari outfit.

Colors Matter in Safari Outfits

The first time I typed “what to wear on Safari” in Google was because I wanted to know what colors and patterns I could get away with on my first safari. Turns out, not many! You see mostly earth tones from guides and naturalists because that’s what you need to wear to not stick out to the wildlife.

Here are some no go safari outfit colors:

• Don’t wear black or dark blue because these colors attract tsetse flies
• Don’t wear white, it doesn’t blend with any terrain
• Avoid loud colors and patterns for the same reason as white
• Avoid camouflage, this is reserved for military only

What colors are good to wear on safari?

• Light earth tones; tans, browns, forest greens, and colors in that same vein
• Either solid print or very minimal patterns aregoing to be ideal for your safari outfit

Dress in Light Fabrics and Layers

The mornings and evenings can be cool with warmer to hot afternoons, so you’ll definitely want to pack safari outfits that can be layered. It’s easiest to layer light fabrics, and you’ll definitely want things that are breathable so you don’t overheat. A safari outfit made of sweat-tastic fabrics is no good!

What fabrics to wear on safari?

• Anything lightweight and breathable

You’re going to be traveling between lodges or camps almost every day on your African safari, and you’re not going to want to be packing up a ton of clothes every time. So, I HIGHLY recommend you pack 2 or 3 outfits that you can mix and match items between.

I also packed using my Peak Design backpack and the Away Bigger Carry-On luggage, and these were easy to move with every day.

Keep Your Safari Outfits Simple

I know we’re all sort of convinced from movies we need these extravagant safari outfits, but I promise simple is better here. Form and function over fashion for sure; you’re going to be getting in and out of vehicles, standing up and down all day every day for however many days you’re on safari. But the best thing about some of my outfit recommendations below is that they’re still cute!

Wear Long Sleeves and Pants

You’re going to want to protect yourself from the sun, the dirt/dust, and the elements, so I highly recommend wearing pants and for one of the layers of your safari outfit to be a long sleeve shirt of some sort. Not every layer needs to be long sleeves, but at least one.

Comfortable Shoes

If you’re not doing any sort of hiking or trekking on safari, your shoes won’t really matter as much. Our safari consisted of game drives for the most part, so I really just recommend something comfortable and neutral in color. This can be hiking boots or a sneaker; whichever would work.

But you will want something that isn’t going to get ruined by a little mud. Depending on what time of year you go on safari you may be walking in a little bit of mud at your hotel/camp site, lunch spot, or any other stops you make along the way.

Bring a Raincoat

Again, because of the weather I highly recommend a raincoat for your safari outfit. Because not only is it a light jacket that acts as a great outer layer should you need it, it’s also great in case you’re going on safari during the shoulder or rainier seasons.

What to Wear On Safari • Shoe Ideas

Like I mentioned before, I would just go with comfort and color preference here. Find something earth toned that’s comfortable to wear. If you’re in the jeep all day for your safari, this won’t matter as much, but I would definitely steer clear of black and dark blue for the tsetse flies I mentioned before. And if you go with white, pick a shoe that is easy to clean mud and dirt off of.

Tanzania provided a safari experience unlike any other African safari destination, including South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve , and Namibia’s Etosha National Park. In short, Tanzania is the king of all Africa when it comes to wildlife safari experiences; simply put Tanzania at the top of your African travel bucket list and you will never be disappointed.

Despite Tanzania providing the best wildlife safari experiences that are enjoyable for everyone, one of the most important things to consider is what to wear on your safari to ensure you have a more enjoyable Tanzania safari experience. Despite being perceived as difficult when it comes to planning what to wear and what essentials to bring on your upcoming safari in Tanzania, everything you require is most likely already in your closet! Our clothing recommendations apply to all seasons on a Tanzania safari, but they differ depending on whether you’re climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or visiting the famous Zanzibar beach .

The colors of your clothes are an important consideration when going on safari in Tanzania. I grew up in East Africa and know a thing or two about the region. When going on a Tanzanian safari, dress in neutral colors that blend well with the Tanzanian Savannah, such as brown, jungle green, and beige. Avoid wearing black or dark blue clothing because they attract tsetse flies. Also, avoid white and bright colors because they are easily soiled. Let’s delve deeper into the subject and talk about the different colors you should wear in different situations when visiting Tanzania.

TANZANIA WEATHER

Tanzania’s best wildlife viewing months are from late June to October, during the dry season. The best months to see wildebeest migration in the Serengeti are June and July, and the best months to see wildebeest calving are late January to February. Tanzania’s main rainy season, known as the “long rains,” lasts from March to April and May.

WHY DOES THE COLOR OF SAFARI CLOTHES MATTER?

The truth is that color is an extremely important consideration when assembling your safari capsule wardrobe. But why is the color of safari clothing important?

 Blending in with your surroundings

The point of going on safari is to see the incredible wildlife. You will definitely stand out in your bushy surroundings if you wear neon clothing. We recommend wearing colors that will help you blend in with the surroundings if you want to see more animals. This is important whether you are going on a game drive safari or a boat safari , but it is especially important if you are going on a walking safari.

 Keeping clean

It should come as no surprise that going on safari is not a sterile experience. Even if you go on a game drive safari , you will almost certainly get dusty and dirty, especially if you go on a walking safari. So that you don’t appear filthy in your photographs, wear colors that will hide the dirt. So now that you understand why it is important to wear and not wear certain colors on safari, we will go over each color in greater detail to assist you when packing.

THE BEST COLORS TO WEAR ON SAFARI

In our opinion, the best colors to wear on a safari are:

These are the colors that will help you blend in with the African landscape, whether it be forests, savannahs, or plains, which is why we advise using them over all others. You will have a much better chance of seeing wildlife and avoiding unfavorable attention by blending in. In addition, we discovered that khaki clothing did the best job of hiding dust, while tan, beige, and brown, in our opinion, did the best job of disguising mud when engaging in muddy activities like Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda.

WHAT COLORS NOT TO WEAR ON SAFARI

The colors listed below should be added to your “what not to wear on safari” list. Although it is likely more crucial for those on walking safaris to strictly abide by this, we still advise doing so whether you are in a car, on foot, or on a boat. This is particularly crucial in terms of health and safety.

Blue and black

Blue and black are usually staples in my wardrobes, especially my outdoor wardrobes, but in my opinion, these are the colors you should stay away from the most on safari. This is due to very serious health and safety concerns, not because they will make you stand up or expose you.

Unfortunately, the tsetse fly is native to Africa. We saw them while on safari in Tanzania. They are particularly common in East and Central Africa. You should make every effort to avoid being bitten by a tsetse fly in order to avoid contracting the terrible disease known as sleeping sickness, which is caused by tsetse flies.

Two colors are more attractive to tsetse flies than any other. They are blue and black, as you probably already guessed. I would heed this advice wherever you go on African safari, even though it is particularly crucial when visiting Central and Eastern Africa, just in case.

Can you wear white on safari?

We are frequently questioned about wearing white on safari. I believe that the majority of people get a romanticized idea of what a safari wardrobe looks like from watching movies and television shows where women don immaculate white linen tops while exploring the savannah and bush.

 But this isn’t really a wise or useful plan. The color that will make you stand out the most on a safari among all the others is white. Additionally, white will unquestionably display dirt and dust more than any other color. I would personally advise wearing a white linen shirt in your safari wardrobe only for dinner at your lodge rather than on safari drives and walks.

Can you wear bright colors on safari?

Bright colors are not advised when going on African safari . Tans and khakis are much better neutral color choices. In particular, on walking safaris, wearing bright colors will make you stand out, which might deter animals from coming out or even attract some that you don’t want to be overly interested in you. As a result, we excluded bright hues from your safari capsule wardrobes.

Can you wear gray colors on safari?

Grey is not the worst color to wear on safari, but I would much rather see khakis and other neutral colors in your closet.

  Is pink color appropriate for a safari?

Pink is not as bad as white, blue, or black on safari, and depending on the shade, it doesn’t particularly attract anything. Nevertheless, I personally would not include pink in my safari wardrobe. Darker or brighter pinks will make you stand out too much, while light pink, which is similar to white, will show up all the dirt and dust and not look great in photographs.

Can you wear red color on a safari?

Although red isn’t known to attract Tsetse flies, it will make you very noticeable to animals, so it’s not advisable to wear red on a safari.

Can I bring orange clothes on safari?

Orange, in any shade, is a bright color and should not be worn on a safari because of this. In addition to the fact that orange attracts insects, which you really don’t want on a safari, wearing orange will make you stand out to animals.

Can you wear camouflage on safari?

Despite being a f antastic safari color , khaki should never be worn on a safari. Although it has nothing to do with animals, the military and soldiers almost exclusively use camouflage in Africa. In fact, if you aren’t in the military, wearing camouflage may be against the law in some areas.

Is it OK to wear black on safari?

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t wear black on safari. Black should be avoided at all costs because, as we already mentioned, it attracts tsetse flies.

COLORS TO WEAR ON SAFARI EVENINGS IN TANZANIA

Most places in Tanzania have a lot of bugs in the evening, so if you are dining outside, you should wear protection from the bugs. Typically, they are drawn to light and vibrant colors. Wearing orange and yellow will make you more appealing to insects, so avoid wearing these colors. Even though this is unrelated to color, if you plan to eat outside, you should also cover your arms and legs. It will lessen the number of mosquito bites.

COLORS TO WEAR WHEN EXPLORING TANZANIAN TOWNS

Avoid wearing anything that will draw attention to you while you are out and about in Tanzania. You shouldn’t draw attention to yourself because doing so will make it easy for pickpockets to identify you in a crowd. I’m not saying there are a lot of criminals in Tanzania, but you should still exercise caution and try to avoid giving someone with bad intentions and advantage over you.

Your best bet is to wear neutral colors to blend in. Red, orange, and other luminous colors should be avoided. On the same vein, when visiting Tanzanian markets and bazaars, leave your flashy jewelry and gadgets in the hotel room (although this has nothing to do with color). The best defense against pickpocketing in this area is to carry only what you absolutely need.

COLORS TO WEAR IF YOU’LL BE USING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Wearing clothing that won’t be easily sold is a must when traveling by public transportation in Tanzania. If you wear white clothes, for example, you won’t be able to remove the stains you might get very easily from the matatus (public service vehicles) in Tanzania because they are typically not very clean.

CONCLUSION: WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHES ARE RECOMMENDED FOR SAFARI?

It is advised to wear loose, comfortable, and easy-to-wash clothing. The idea is to bring only what you need because most camps and lodges will launder your clothes for a small fee. There is no need to dress up for safaris because they are casual. Plan to wear layers so you can adjust to temperature changes because, depending on the time of year, early morning game drives can be quite chilly while daytime temperatures can get quite warm.

Wear neutral or khaki-colored clothing instead of dark blue or black, which tends to draw tsetse flies. Sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen, and wide-brimmed hats are essential. • What to Wear on Safari in Tanzania – A Packing List

I f you are headed to Tanzania, but are not quite sure what to wear on safari, I am here to help you out. Here is exactly what to pack – and what not to pack – for a Tanzania safari.

When I went on my very first Tanzania camping safari , the experience was truly awe-inspiring. The chance to see so many animals in the wild that I’d previously only seen on television was, in a word, breathtaking.

While in Tanzania, I saw The Big Five (and then some!), and to date have been on wildlife safaris in four countries now. It never gets less amazing!

However, before taking this trip, I didn’t know what to wear on safari in Tanzania. Did I need khakis and a safari hat? Or stiff rugged boots? I honestly wasn’t sure and had to do a ton of research before I left.

Luckily, after my time in Tanzania, I know exactly what your safari packing list must include. Three main topics this guide will highlight are the importance of comfort, safety, and blending into the environment.

Note: This packing list is written from a woman’s point of view, but all of the items below can be swapped out for the men’s version, too.

Weather in Tanzania

First and foremost, to properly pack, you must be prepared for the diverse climates within the Serengeti and beyond. Remember that Tanzania is in the southern hemisphere, which means that the seasons are reversed from the USA.

Throughout the year, temperatures in the Serengeti and surrounding regions remain relatively stable, hovering around 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. They then drop significantly at night, often cutting the daytime temperature in half.

Tanzania experiences its rainy season in the months of March, April, and May. Despite this, you will likely have clear days and the probability of spotting plenty of animals in the Serengeti . The rainy season tends to be slightly warmer and more humid, contrasting with the drier heat of the dry season.

The prime wildlife viewing months in Tanzania span the dry season, from late June to October. This period offers optimal opportunities to spot elusive species like leopards, driven to water holes by the scarcity of rain.

Additionally, June and July mark the peak of the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, which is exactly why I chose to visit during this time.

General Packing Tips for Tanzania Safari

First and foremost, comfort Is King. You will have very long days in the car, and there are few designated areas that you will actually exit the vehicle. So be sure to dress for comfort over style.

Be sure to pack enough outfits for every day of the safari, plus an extra outfit or two. You will have no chance to do laundry, particularly on a camping safari like I did, because you are moving campsites almost daily.

Consider the color of the clothing you pack. It is ideal that all members of the safari wear greens and browns and blend in with the landscape, lest you scare the wildlife away. For me this was easy to follow, as I have a lot of earth-toned clothing anyway.

Tsetse flies are attracted to dark colors and bright colors, but in particular to the color blue. So don’t pack whites, blues, reds, yellows, and pinks. I went primarily earth-tones with a pale bit of color here or there, and was totally fine.

Important: camouflage clothing is illegal in Tanzania unless you are military personnel. Though it blends in with the surroundings, do not pack it.

Your Tanzania Safari Packing List

Here are the specific items I packed in my luggage for Tanzania. I consider each of them to be safari essentials, and have packed them for all subsequent safaris, too.

This mixture of clothing will allow for layering to combat any and all temperature fluctuations throughout the day.

1. The correct bottoms.

Remember, our two greatest concerns are comfort and color. For me, that meant two types of pants were a must.

First, a pair of thicker bottoms that resemble jeans but have some stretch worked out great for me. Check out these thick stretchy pants for a perfect option. These are your more rugged bottoms for hiking or walking. Be sure to purchase earth tones like olive green or tan if possible.

Second, I had several pairs of basic leggings. You probably already own these but the linked pair comes in shades of green and tan as well as black. Trust me, these were necessary for long days in the Jeep.

And third, I recommend one pair of comfy sweatpants for both longer car days as well as at night. As discussed, the nighttime temperatures can drop. These came in handy at the Ngorongoro Crater campsite, which is very cold because of the high elevation.

2. An array of tops.

Be sure to pack both sleeveless and short sleeve shirts as you will likely drive through many different climates. My safari was 6 days long so I packed enough for the trip plus one extra for my “laundry day.” It worked out well for me and I did the same on safari in Chitwan, Nepal and in Namibia.

Some great and affordable shirt options I recommend are this set of green and black tank tops and several short sleeve tees ( this one has a nice knot-detail, making it way more fun than a basic tee.)

Then on top of those, you should have a long sleeve sweater or a hooded sweatshirt on hand. I actually brought one of each and was glad I did. Remember, layering is key because of all the temperature changes you’ll experience.

3. Footwear.

Though you’ll primarily be in the car on safari days, I found it useful to have a comfortable pair of tennis shoes or trekking sandals. My favorite pair has been on almost every continent with me and is still going strong!

Additionally, I recommend a pair of basic flip flops, both for the car rides and the campsite showers, if you book a camping safari .

Basically, sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or trekking sandals are key. Additionally, bring both thin and thick socks so you have options as you drive deeper into the Serengeti.

4. Sun protection.

The sun can be strong in Tanzania, so protective items will be key – especially if you are headed to Zanzibar post-safari. Beyond sunscreen, here is what else you should pack for your safari in Tanzania.

First, a wide-brimmed hat is a must. The hat was multipurpose or me – besides just keeping the sun at bay, it also kept my long hair somewhat in place while we drove in the open-top vehicle.

The first day I didn’t wear my hat, and my hair turned into a dusty and tangled mess.(Did I mention, you should bring a really good detangling conditioner, especially if you have long hair? Yeah… do that!)

Also pack a pair of sunglasses as well as a lightweight scarf for sun protection. The scarf, by the way, can help block wind and dust, too.

5. Outerwear options.

As I’ve mentioned, layering is going to be important on safari days.

Pack a puffy winter coat that folds down small, so that it won’t take up too much room in your luggage. Ngorongoro Crater was freezing cold overnight, so I was very thankful I had one with me!

I’m a huge fan of this winter jacket, which packs down super small. I have it in both a bright and a muted color palette.

I also recommend a fleece jacket and a waterproof shell for cooler evenings or rainy days.

Gear To Pack for Your Safari

Besides clothing, the next most important items to pack for Tanzania is gear. We’re talking camera gear, binoculars, and more. Here is what I couldn’t live without!

1. Binoculars.

Maybe like you, I did not own a pair of binoculars before my first safari. And, it wasn’t an item that I wanted to invest hundreds of dollars on, because it’s not something that I will use super often.

But I also didn’t want to cheap-out on them, because I wanted them to work well for both this Tanzania safari, but also into the future.

So, I did a lot of research ( seriously, let me save you days of your life .) I ended up buying a pair of binoculars that had the same prism as the most expensive brands, but from a lesser known company, so I wasn’t just paying for the name.

In the end, these binoculars worked very well for me, and have now been used in three countries and counting. I’m sure a professional would give you plenty of other factors to think about, but these were beyond great for me.

2. A good camera.

An African safari is truly a bucket-list item, and in some cases a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Therefore, you should definitely bring a high quality camera.

The Sony Alpha series is absolutely amazing and I have as close to zero complaints as humanly possible. My beloved Sony is hands-down the best camera I’ve ever owned. Pair it with a sharp lens and you are golden.

3. An action camera.

A teeny-tiny camera is perfect for filming and takes up next to no room in your bag. The GoPro Hero 9 and beyond are great for producing SHARP video even on bumpy terrain. Basically I used to GoPro primarily for filming and then my bigger camera for shooting.

4. Toiletries and wellness

Finally, you should remember to pack wellness items and toiletries, as you will not likely find them while on safari. Here are several items not to forget.

• Sunscreen and lip balm
• Small flashlight or headlamp ( my headlamp was invaluable at campsites!)
• Insect repellent
• Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer
• Tissue paper
• Body wipes such as these biodegradable wipes for dirt and grime
• A small travel towel
• Personal toiletries
• Small first aid kit including things like ibuprofen, antimalaria pills if needed, allergy medicine, band-aids, stomach ache remedy, antibiotic cream, diarrhea medicine, and any prescription medications you need on hand.
• Clothing: Specify quantities and types of clothing based on trip duration.
• Personal items: Sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal medications.
• Safari gear: Binoculars, camera, and reusable water bottle.
• Provide advice on packing efficiently to maximize space in luggage or safari bags.

What To Wear On A Safari in Tanzania

Guide to what to wear on safari in tanzania.

Packing for Tanzania was a little more challenging than for our usual travels.  We had never been on a safari before and don’t have any “safari-type” clothes.  We also wanted to pack light and share one bag between the two of us so I knew we had to pack smart .

I usually plan out my outfits for each day when I am packing for a trip.  My style is important to me but I still like to dress appropriately for the occasion.  When envisioning people on safari, typically what comes to mind are khaki vests, safari hats, cargo pants and hiking boots.

After our first day on safari we quickly realized “safari clothing” is not even necessary!  (At least not on your typical Tanzanian safari in the popular Northern Circuit ).  So don’t worry so much about what to wear!

What to pack for safari in Tanzania

Q: do i need to pack hiking boots for safari in tanzania.

We spent most of our time in the Land Cruiser.  There’s no need for hiking shoes.  Unless you have a planned hiking excursion on your itinerary, you probably won’t be doing much walking.  Save the weight in your luggage!

I brought my Nike Frees and Ryan wore his Nike Roshes , both are nice and light.  But on our second day we wore flip flops .  It was nice to let our feet breathe and I decided to wear flip flops the rest of the week.

Q: Are cargo pants or vests with pockets necessary to wear on safari in Tanzania?

No need to wear cargo pants or vests with pockets on your Tanzania safari – unless you really have lots of things you want to carry right on you.  Honestly I just brought my purse along and Ryan brought a backpack with our cameras, binoculars, chargers and some cash.

We saw other tourists all decked out with walking poles, safari hats, hiking boots, etc and we laughed to ourselves.  The most walking we saw people doing was from the safari vehicle to the bathroom and back.

In fact, on the second day, I wore a dress and was super comfortable .  I also wore shorts and light-weight shirts .  In the mornings it was chilly (around 10 degrees Celcius), especially in Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, but by midday it got warm.  I was never too hot, though.  Just bring layers and you will be comfortable.  A light jacket and light scarf was all I needed.

Q: Are there certain colors I should wear or not wear on safari in Tanzania?

If you are wondering what colors to wear on safari in Tanzania, try to stay away from wearing black .  For one, it gets super dusty with the dry dirt roads and safari trucks speeding past, kicking up clouds of dust.  Probably a good reason to stick to khaki and olive green colors.

Secondly, black and blue attract tsetse flies which are particularly a problem in Tarangire National Park.  The parks even hang black and blue flags on the trees everywhere (as seen below) to attract the tsetse flies and poison them.

Q: Do I need to wear a hat on safari in Tanzania?

A: not really..

Neither of us wore a hat once.  Ryan brought one but didn’t find he needed it.  All the safari vehicles we saw had pop-up roofs, so you are still covered over head .  I only ever really felt the sun hitting my arms and face through the side windows, but never my head.  And whenever we did get out of the vehicle, it was to use the bathroom or have a picnic, and there was always shade.

Even though it’s Africa, I didn’t find we were out in the sun a lot.  It might also be because we were there in November so it wasn’t super sunny at all times.  If you are sensitive to the sun and you will be visiting during the dry months then bring a hat to be safe.

Q: What should I for sure wear on safari in Tanzania?

A: sunglasses and insect repellent..

Sunglasses are a good idea.  The sun is fierce and sunglasses also protect your eyes from all that dust .

Also, bring insect repellent.  In November I didn’t notice many bugs except for in Tarangire so be sure to wear it there. But to be safe, might as well put it on every day.

And don’t forget a bathing suit!   Every lodge we stayed at had a beautiful pool.  It is definitely nice to relax after a long day of bumpy driving by taking a dip in the pool.

If you’re heading to the main spots such as the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater, you will likely spend most of your time inside a jeep, but prepare for the unexpected!

Our trip in the Serengeti was momentarily stopped by a mechanical meltdown, which resulted in us all jumping out and helping push the car out of a muddy spot. So, it is best to wear comfortable, loose clothing with a good pair of shoes.

Warm clothes

For many people, a multi day safari involves a night or two camping. Therefore, it is important to bring warm clothes as it can get very cold overnight.

Avoid leather clothing

Also beware of leather clothing – the scent can attract animals (honestly – we had a tour mate lose a nice pair of leather sandals to a hyena!)

What colors to wear on safari in Tanzania?

One things to be aware of when you are on safari in Tanzania is tse tse flies. Unfortunately they can fly in swarms and make your trip really uncomfortable! Although most good drivers will know how to avoid the areas where they are common, they tend to be attracted to darker colours.

Therefore, it is recommended that your clothing is light in colour. Also, long garments (like a safari skirt!) are perfect as they protect your skin from the little pests!

For women on safari, a long safari skirt is a great way to go. Not only are they glamorous, but they are great for the warm weather. Most places in Tanzania are pretty conservative, so it is also an appropriate way to go.

Hat and Sunglasses

The sun can also be quite severe, so it is a good idea to bring a hat and sunglasses as well.

Towel and Soap

The best tip for packing efficiently for a Tanzania safari is to only bring the essentials. One thing you should definitely bring is a towel for the shower!

Unless you’re specifically told, most campsites do not have towels and it’s not much fun to be caught out without one!

I would also recommend bringing your own soap. Shampoo and conditioner are probably not necessary for any short trip – if you’re vain, bring a hat or headscarf!

Probably the most important thing to bring on either a one day or multi day safari is a camera for capturing the amazing moments. Any camera is fine but for the enthusiast, a good, fast lens is best for snapping the lightning-quick moments.You can also bring a binocular.

Insect repellent and sunscreen

Another must is some insect repellent.I recommend this natural insect repellent DEET-Free.Sunscreen is also important – even through the windows of the safari car, you can still get badly burnt.

Drinking water

Finally, it is absolutely necessary to bring your own water. Nothing will ruin your dream safari faster than if you suffer from dehydration, which does happen. So ensure that you bring at least 2 litres of water.

What to wear on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a beautiful place, whether it be for relaxing on a beach or going on safari. Although it is popular with tourists and many resorts have their own private part of the beach so you can be a little more care free, in the cities (and especially Stone Town), the culture is very conservative.

Out of respect and in order to avoid any uncomfortable situations, it is best to cover yourself – at least your shoulders and knees. One priceless item for these situations is a sarong – perfect for wrapping around your shoulders or bathing suit.

If you are heading off on a safari from another location that you’ll be returning to (like a hotel), ask if you can leave your bag there and just take a small backpack.

In order to make it easy to access what you have packed, I recommend organising your backpack efficiently using other smaller bags; one for your wet and dirty clothes, and one for your underwear and other things you want to be able to grab easily.

The Dos and Don’ts of Safari Clothing Packing

Packing for your African safari can seem overwhelming, so let’s finish off by going over our main dos and don’ts when it comes to getting together your safari gear and planning your safari attire!

What should you not wear on safari?

What you shouldn’t wear for an African safari depends highly on the actual trip type that you’re participating in. An overland trip that touches on a variety of countries is going to mean different must-haves from a short safari to Kruger Park that’s smack in the middle of a longer trip.

If your African safari trip is long, you’re going to want to focus on making comfortable, practical safari clothing a priority. But if you’re headed on a short three-day trip, you can definitely get by with wearing regular clothes.

But for both trips, we highly recommend that you DO NOT wear a romper on a safari — three days, seven days or otherwise. We know that we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such an important note that we want to talk about it in a little more detail!

When you’re on an overland safari trip, it’s common place to simply pull over on the side of the road to go to the bathroom — in public — as there really aren’t bathrooms along the way. The reason why we stress that you shouldn’t wear rompers is due to the fact that going to bathroom in a romper means taking all of your clothes off to go to the bathroom.

While you might be able to find a somewhat “discreet” spot in the pushes to pop a squat, you’ll still be pulling off your entire romper in public and it’s much harder to attempt to conceal the top and bottom half of your body at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on covering your backside.

We know you’ll thank us for this advice later!

What colors should you wear on safari?

As exciting as it is to experience nature in its rawest form, you don’t have to immerse yourself to the extent that your safari clothing completely blends in with the foliage and desert itself. We can leave that for the Hollywood movies!

With that in mind, the best colors for safari clothes include:

• Olive green

A tip for picking the best color for your safari clothing is to go with colors that are inspired by nature. Measure your clothes with the image above, if they’re in the same tone, intensity and relatively the same color they’re good to go. You’re looking to blend in, but you don’t have to look like Crocodile Dundee or wear full tactical gear!

What color should you not wear on safari?

If you’ve done your safari clothing due diligence, chances are you’ve come across something that tells you not to wear bright colors. It seems like a strange request, but it’s recommended that you choose neutral colors because you don’t want the animals to see you — if they do they might be scared off!

Stick to neutral colors but avoid white because your safari clothes are bound to get very dirty, especially if you’re camping, and white will show it all!

Can you wear black on safari?

Wearing black on safari is not recommended. Black clothing attracts mosquitoes, and you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible to keep your trip its most enjoyable!

If you do end up bringing some black pieces, keep them to a minimum and opt for lightweight fabrics wherever possible!

On August 2, 2022, Just got back from South Africa; Cape Town, Cape Winelands, then off to safari at Kruger; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Botswana, Okavango Delta! It was a great 12-women trip, Women, Wine and Wild. I researched and looked at this site for everything from suitcases, carry-ons, cross-body bags, packing, lists of clothes, shoes, jackets, underpinnings, toiletries, hats, scarves, etc.; for varying types of travel, city, winelands, safaris, and Travel Fashion Girl came through on all fronts – I was ordering things left and right even in the last few days and got it all together and had the most wonderful trip. I may have taken a little too much, but I really used most everything I brought so it all worked out. But as they say, less is more; I wouldn’t bother even with a little heel for dinners out if it’s only a few night in a city. I wouldn’t take as many pants as those can be interchangeable pretty easily, especially if you bring a few blouses/tops. For chilly mornings or evenings, a lightweight puffer jacket was perfect. And scarves are perfect to help mix it all up and really be able to wear the same things with different scarves. TFG is an amazing place to go for everything travel; I love it!

Just got back from our 3 week honeymoon on safari in Kenya and Tanzania including a week in Zanzibar – these packing lists from TFG were so helpful for knowing what to expect and helping to minimize how much luggage to bring. Definitely recommend carry on backpack for this trip to fit in the small trunks of the land cruisers and for small airplanes (we took one with only 12 seats!)

Someone recommended we take soft travel bags to fit onto the small airplanes which I would NOT do again. Due to their weight, it made the grueling trek through airports a painful experience 😣 Instead, we would have preferred rolling, carry-on luggage. My two-cents, but unless you travel lightly, soft bags aren’t the way to go for this type of trip. Anyone else?

Loved this packing list! I only went on a two day safari but this was immensely helpful with helping me choose the right clothes to pack for a conference plus my safari outing.

We’re just back from a Safari in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Zambia And I found previous posts on Safari clothing on this site invaluable! And def no all in ones ! We stopped for loo breaks whenever needed and took it in turns to go round to the back of the truck so it was totally private and discreet! I took very thin summer dresses for the middle of the days and was really glad of these . And we definitely needed warm things for early morning … I had a cashmere snood I was so thankful for … I could pull it up over the back of my head . Also silk gloves ! And it was the best holiday we have ever had !

Just came back from a trip that included: Capetown; The Winelands; Vic Falls; Chobie game drive in Botswana; self drive through Kruger; and a luxury resort/safari game drive; — oh yeah and we had a two day stop over in Doha (!) So we had temps that ranged from 50-65 degrees in Capetown/Winelands; 55-85 in Kruger, and 98-112 degrees in Doha (!)

So one big thing to consider is that the weather is vastly different depending where you go: Capetown in July is Winter, which is chilly and drizzly, can be windy and stormy, BUT because it’s their winter, it was the best time to go on Safari on the other side of South Africa, which was Great Kruger National Park, so just remember, your season might not be their season. Best safari pants I brought was North Face Hybrid Yoga/cargo pants in olive — stretchy, quick dry, had tons of pockets, but felt like leggings. Also the lululemon “Smooth Departure” packable rain coat. Ultra light, and looks good while on safari or in the city. Lastly, even if you go during a “light bug” season, I would recommend at least one Insect Shield SPF long sleeve top (that can be also rolled up) and at least two pairs of their socks. Long sleeve shirts that have SPF can keep you cooler than a t-shirt because the African sun is HOT!! And even if you come from a sunny state (Like CA, as I do) your arms can get really get burnt. Also, a first layer underlayer (for cold) can do double duty. I wore it over my bathing suit while I was going into Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls), and it really saved me because the water was COLD!! Because it was dry-wicking, it dried almost immediately. Also, just a note: our safari guides would NOT have recommended wearing that bright turquoise jacket that’s pictured in the photo (especially on a walking safari) — maybe it was more “neutral” looking in real life?

YES it gets COLD, even in summer! Keep in mind that some local flights out into the bush have a weight limit on luggage so double check on this- they’re strict! Also, some safari’s do laundry daily so that helps cut down on what you need. I survived a 2 week trip with 2 pairs of leggings, 1 hiking pant from Athleta (cute!), 1 pr of shorts, 5 shirts, (mix of button ups, tanks and athletic type t’s) a fleece and a windbreaker. Don’t overdo the shoes either! One pair of sneaker types and one pair of sandals is fine!

Great article! Having lived in Africa for the past nine years, I might also advise against wearing shorts. Most of Africa is significantly more conservative than many Western countries, and the only people I ever see in shorts are the tourists and, at times, wearing anything cut above the knee can attract unwanted attention from males- an unfortunate but true reality

Hi Alex, Emily’s comment about shorts also might include strappy tank tops and leggings. Your comment about wearing sports bras was right on. Safari trucks have lousy shocks and you will be bounced around. A scarf is useful for keeping dust out of you eyes and mouth.

We are going to Cape Town for 4 days then winery for 4 days, safari for 5 then victoria falls. Will it look silly if I wear kaftans for dinners? And what about days for shopping and touring in towns? I can’t imagine having only a carry on and not a variety of clothing.

If you’d normally wear kaftans to dinners at home then you should wear them while you’re traveling too 🙂

No blue clothing, as it (like black) attracts mosquitos. Bring decent underwear, something you won’t be embarrassed for camp staff to wash by hand, as I found one fellow doing. You’ll wear the long-sleeve shirt in the jeep during the afternoon so you don’t get sunburned. Unless you’ll hike, closed-toe sandals are good for everything. I wore clogs for the plane and around camp. Glad I brought a fleece jacket for cold mornings. I brought older clothing and left it. In Tanzania, I left sneakers with a camp staffer who was extremely grateful, even though they were one size too big for him. To my safari driver went my bathing suit and robe (someone will wear them), fleece jacket, and old Tevas. I suggest a headlamp, which you may need (tents and hotels were short on light).

I would add one trash bag to the packing list. In the morning game drive on our last day of the safari, it rained cats and dogs on us, and we got soaked (we all had rain ponchos on but they didn’t help much). Thankfully, someone had trash bags to spare, so we could put the wet clothes in the bag and put in the luggage without everything else getting damp.

Just got back from an Africa safari, and here is my recommendations: 1.) Take Sunscreen! I burned one half of my face sitting in the safari vehicle one day…so I switched sides to burn evenly the next. 2.) A hat would help combat problem #1. 3.) Don’t waste space on hair dryers or makeup etc. No one in the bush cares. 🙂 Bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste and call it done. 4.) I only brought hiking tennis shoes. I longed for a pair of flip flops on the long days in a car. 5.) It can get quite chilly at night. Bring long pants for sleeping if you are staying in a tented camp. I was on my honeymoon so pajama’s wasn’t a top priority when packing…wish it had been! Lol! 6.) Bring a clean outfit for the plane ride home and put it aside. Coming out of the bush after a week of bucket showers you feel dirty enough. 7.) Last and most important: Don’t pack anything that resembles food in a tented camp. I had a granola bar in my bag and we had a honey badger break into our tent while we were gone. It ate the granola bar, chewed up all my underwear, and then took a big poop in my husbands suit case!

At least one knee length skirt or dress is a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the parks at all. A sarong also goes a long way and I have a nice knit hat I alway bring along in the winter. Also, the first time I traveled to Tanzania I made the mistake of thinking I would only need camping gear and spent the whole time wishing I had a cute top with me. I highly recommend bringing an outfit you can wear to dinner or a club. Overall, great tips! Thanks!

I’m off to fashionable Dubai & Iran after overlanding in Africa, so I’m trying to figure out a way to keep my suitcase light AND have enough clothes that are fashionable and practical! I reckon a few colourful scarves may be the way to go, and one long black skirt as well as the above.

I am not sure if you have already gone trekking or not, but I might consider changing your black skirt to tan, beige, grey or even light pink. I spent two years in and out of Dubai and Afghanistan….you will constantly be trying to clean your black skirt, the sand is more like a talcum powder and sticks to everything, also the dark colours are hot! You will definitely want something feminine/girlie though and the scarves are an excellent idea! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

As always, love, love, love the lists! In all parts of Africa, it’s best to always err on the side of modesty and cameo prints should always be avoided. On safari, it would be worth spending the extra money for clothing that is sunscreen rated/treated with bug repellent.

Colors to Wear on Safari in Tanzania (a Local’s Guide)

When going to Tanzania on Safari, the colors of the clothes you wear are an important consideration. I have lived in East Africa all my life and know a thing or two on the topic.

When going on a Tanzanian safari, wear clothes with neutral colors like Brown, Jungle Green and Beige that blend well with the Tanzanian Savannah. Avoid black and dark blue clothing since they easily attract tsetse flies. Also avoid white and bright colors since they get dirty easily.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the topic and discuss the different colors you should wear in different contexts when visiting Tanzania.

Colours to wear when on a safari drive in Tanzania

• Neutral colours : When going to see the animals when you are out on Safaris, you will need to wear neutral that are not conspicuous and easy to spot. This is because you generally want to blend in with the background so that you don’t startle the animals you will be viewing. If you are very conspicuous, you are more likely to scare away the animals as you approach them.
• Avoid White : there is a lot of dust both in the game drives and your journeys and this makes white clothes really hard to keep clean
• Colours suggestions for your game drives : brown, dark green, beige, grey, and cream
• Avoid Camo ( it’s illegal): unless you are military on official business, wearing clothes that resemble military wear is illegal in Tanzania and you might get in trouble with the authorities.
• Avoid Black and Blue: These colors attract tsetse flies and wearing them will make you more vulnerable to the pesky flies. Tsetse flies are so attracted to the color blue that they color tsetse fly traps blue in order to draw them in.

Colours to wear on safari evening’s in Tanzania

In the evenings most Tanzanian destinations have a lot of bugs and when you are dining outside, you will want to protect yourself from the bugs by. They usually get attracted to the light and bright colours.

Avoid wearing orange and yellow since these colours will make you more attractive to bugs.

Though this is not colour related, you will also want to cover up your arms and legs If you will be dining outdoors. This will help reduce mosquito bites.

Colours to wear when exploring Tanzanian towns

When our and about in Tanzania, avoid wearing something that will draw attention to you. The reason you don’t want to be conspicuous is that you will make it easy for pickpockets to pick you out from a crowd.

I’m not saying that there are a lot of criminals in Tanzania, however, you need to be vigilant and avoid making it easy for someone with ill intentions to carry out their plans.

In order to blend in, neutral colours are your best bet. Avoid bright orange, red and luminous colours.

On the same note, (This is not related to colour though) leave your flashy jewellery and devices in the hotel room when going to Tanzanian markets and bazaars. Pickpocketing is worst here and the best way of protecting yourself is carrying only what you need.

Colours to wear if you’ll be using public transportation

When using public transport in Tanzania, you need to make sure that you wear clothes that are will not easily be sold. Matatus (Public Service vehicles) in Tanzania are generally not very clean and if you wear white clothes, for instance, you will not be able to clean off the stains you may get very easily.

Launched in 2017, the program aimed to improve the management of natural resources and tourism in Southern Tanzania, including Ruaha National Park (RUNAPA), which has been tied to a cascade of human rights abuses , according to the Oakland Institute, a California-based advocacy group.

The World Bank has already disbursed $100 million of the $150 million project, known as REGROW, according to The Oakland Institute.

The Tanzanian government plans included work aimed at nearly doubling the size of the park, the largest protected wildlife area in the country, from one million to over two million hectares. But the expansion plans have left the local villagers high and dry: The plan has included Tanzanian government efforts to forcibly evict over 21,000 people to expand the park, without providing villagers compensation or other land, according to The Oakland Institute.

“Communities report that park rangers, receiving funding through REGROW, have been implicated in murders of several villagers and numerous instances of violence since the project began,” according to a recent report published by the institute. “The World Bank, however, has turned a blind eye to the horrific abuses unleashed on the communities by choosing to not enforce its own safeguards.”

Even as local villagers have pushed back on the human rights abuses, luxury tourist options for visiting the park abound. From sunrise hot air balloon tours over the park with champagne celebrations, to camps with private lodges and spa attractions like pools, and massages—visitors from around the globe have continued to tour the park despite the allegations.

Wildlife reserves have continued to be a boon for Tanzania, pulling in billions of dollars of tourism revenue annually. But the ongoing issues with the REGROW project have raised questions about the rights of local villagers living near tourist attractions.

“This should be a wakeup call for the Bank’s leadership in Washington, D.C.—you cannot continue to ignore the voices of the people on the ground who are struggling to survive as a result of your so-called ‘development’ projects,” Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director of the Oakland Institute said.

The World Bank told The Daily Beast it had suspended further funding for the project after receiving information that “suggests breaches of our policies in the implementation of the REGROW project.”

“The World Bank is deeply concerned about the allegations of abuse and injustice related to the Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project in Tanzania,” a World Bank spokesperson told The Daily Beast, adding that the World Bank will work with the authorities moving forward to try to ensure the project can “improve the lives of Tanzanians.”

The backpedaling from the World Bank comes after years of the Oakland Institute pushing against the project. Villagers have also taken steps to protest the project, and have on multiple occasions turned to the legal system for recourse, without any success. Last year villagers filed a case in the East African Court of Justice against the expansion of the park as well.

The Oakland Institute called the decision “long overdue.”

“It sends a resounding message to the Tanzanian government that there are consequences for its rampant rights abuses taking place across the country to boost tourism,” Mittal said. “The days of impunity are finally coming to an end.”

Reparations should be provided to the villagers who have been victims of the human rights abuses, The Oakland Institute said.

“Moreover, villagers who have been victims of gross human rights violations and crippling livelihood restrictions must receive adequate, effective, and prompt reparations to ensure justice and help redress the harm they have endured,” the Oakland Institute said in a statement.

The World Bank did not answer questions about whether it will participate in providing reparations to the affected villagers.
