Is Teeling Distillery worth it?

There are three reasons why most whiskey lovers visiting Dublin end up at Teeling Distillery –

For the fourth year running, this new distillery in Dublin has been nominated for Europe’s Leading Distillery Tour at the  World Travel Awards .

Distillers from Scotland and Japan have almost always won the World’s Best Single Malt, but in 2019, for the first time, an Irish Whiskey distilled by Teeling won the coveted award.

Choosing the right tasting tour

All Teeling Distillery tours are fully guided and led by Teeling Whiskey Ambassadors.

Each tour has two parts – a tour of the distillery and a whiskey tasting.

During the first part of the tour, you will see and learn the complete whiskey-making process followed at the distillery.

Visitors can customize the second leg of the tour, that is, the whiskey tasting.

There are three types of tastings visitors can choose from depending on their preference.

This tasting option is the best if you are new to whiskey or not a huge fan.

You get to taste Teeling Distillery’s small-batch blends and a seasonal handcrafted cocktail.

If you would like to try different styles of Teeling Whiskey Distillery, the Trinity Tasting option comes highly recommended.

Your tasting session will include the award-winning Small Batch, Single Grain, and Single Malt Whiskey.

If you are a whiskey connoisseur and want to try something exclusive, unique, and unusual, you must opt for the Distillery Select tasting.

During this premier tasting session, you get to try Teeling Small Batch, Single Malt, Distillery Exclusive, and Single Pot Still.

These are Teeling’s flagship whiskeys and those that are exclusively available at their distillery.

While the Teeling Tasting is the cheapest tour, the Distillery Select tasting is the costliest option.

Yes, children can accompany adults on their whiskey-tasting tours.

Kids under ten years can join for free, while those between 10 and 17 can buy a discounted ticket.

However, visitors can’t buy these kids’ tickets online. If you plan to visit with your child under 18 years old, please email [email protected].

As can be imagined, during the whiskey-tasting session, the kids will be offered a soft drink instead.

Important:  Since this whiskey tour happens in a working distillery, kids two years old and below can’t join in.

About the Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Though they’re one of the newest distilleries in Dublin , the name Teeling goes all the way back to the golden era of John Jameson and George Roe. In 1782, Walter Teeling established a distillery on Dublin’s Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties area of Dublin.

However, by the 19th century, the Teeling Whiskey Distillery was purchased by a larger neighbouring operation, William Jameson & Co (part of the Jameson family but now a rival distillery).

Like many other Irish distilleries in the early 20th century, William Jameson & Co eventually shut down due to financial difficulties, and any last remaining trace of the Teeling name disappeared.

Regeneration

The rebirth began in 1987 when John Teeling , a descendant of Walter Teeling, purchased a facility in Cooley, County Louth and converted it into a distillery. Opening as the Cooley Distillery in 1989, it operated for around 20 years before being sold to American multinational Beam Inc in 2011.

Though not before Teeling’s sons, Jack and Stephen, negotiated the purchase of 16,000 casks of aged Irish whiskey and used them to launch Teeling Whiskey in 2012.

In 2015, the Teelings established a new whiskey distillery in Newmarket Square, not far from the spot of the original Teeling Distillery on Marrowbone Lane.

The Teeling Distillery tour (€20 p/p)

The first thing to know about this Teeling Distillery Tour (affiliate link) is that when you’re being shown around, you’re seeing a fully operational distillery in action which is pretty cool (not every ‘distillery’ in the city is a working distillery).

This self-guided tour costs €20 per person and you get to try some of the award-winning Teeling whiskey range. You also have access to the Exhibition Space, where the story of Dublin’s whiskey history is told.

There are two other self-guided tours: for €25, you can check out their award-winning Teeling Trinity range featuring Small Batch, Single Grain & Single Malt.

Things to do near the Teeling Whiskey Distillery

One of the beauties of taking the Teeling Whiskey tour is that, when you finish up, you’re a short walk from some of the best places to visit in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Teeling Whiskey Distillery (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. St Patrick’s Cathedral (7-minute walk)

Eight hundred years old and one of Dublin’s iconic structures, St Patrick’s Cathedral is less than 10 minutes away from Teelings and could be a cool spot to stop off at on the way to the distillery. Admire the gorgeous architecture from the pleasant grounds outside before taking a free tour.

2. Marsh’s Library (8-minute walk)

Marsh's Library

One of the last 18th-century buildings in Ireland still used for its original purpose, the 300-year-old Marsh’s Library sits next door to St Patrick’s and has a fascinating history all of its own. Check out the bullet holes from the 1916 Easter Rising , as well as some dusty ancient tomes that date back to the 15th century!

3. Guinness Storehouse (12-minute walk)

Just over a 12-minute walk away is the home of Dublin and Ireland’s most famous drink export. If you prefer something a bit heavier than whiskey’s light (but strong!) touch, then the Guinness Storehouse is a great place to visit. Learn all about Arthur Guinness, the brewing process, the famous adverts and finish with a gorgeous rooftop view of Dublin.

4. St Stephen’s Green (20-minute walk)

St Stephens Green in Dublin

The heart of Georgian Dublin comes in the form of a lovely green square at the centre of a busy city. As well as its trees, ponds and fountains, St Stephen’s Green is home to some interesting busts, including those of James Joyce and Constance Markievicz. When you’ve made the 20-minute walk from the Teeling tour, you’ll be back among the action of the city too.

Visitors viewing an exhibition stand saying, "The Home of Teeling Whiskey" in the Exhibition Area.

Choose from three distillery tours that are sure to quench your thirst for rich, Irish whiskey.

The beginner-friendly Teeling Tasting Tour costs about $17.30 USD (€17), with the higher-end Distillery Select Tasting Tour being priced at around $30.53 USD (€30) and is more suited to those familiar with Irish whiskey.

Teeling Tasting Tour

Image of three copper pot stills in the Teeling Whiskey Distillery.

This tour offers you a fully guided experience of Teeling’s Whiskey Distillery. You’ll top off your tour with a sample of their full-flavored Teeling Small Batch Whiskey. Plus, you’ll savor a delicious handcrafted seasonal whiskey cocktail at their hip Bang Bang Bar. It’s great for whiskey newbies looking to dip their toes into whiskey tasting.

  • Whiskey tasting
  • Fully guided group tour of the distillery
  • Explore the Exhibition Space to discover Dublin’s Whiskey history
  • Private tour
  • Whiskeys besides Teeling Small Batch

A whiskey connoisseur will lead you on this introductory Teeling Whiskey Tour. Learn about the history of Teeling Whiskey, The Liberties, and Dublin whiskey in the exhibition area.

Posters, pictures, and artwork tastefully line the walls here. You’ll also view an assortment of whiskey memorabilia.

Note : Restrooms are discretely located opposite exhibition stand 5.

Afterward, make your way to the distillery. Here you’ll learn how barley, water, and yeast are used to make whiskey in The Mill.

Your guide will also explain how Teeling’s fermentation process differs from others.

Check out the copper pot stills inspired by 19th-century Dublin pot stills before heading to the maturation space.

Interesting fact: The pot stills are named after founder Jack Teeling’s three daughters, Alison, Natalie, and Rebecca.

Afterward, you’ll learn about the art of maturation and the process of cask maturation in the maturation space. Then head into the whiskey tasting area to sample delicious Irish whiskey with fellow visitors.

Teeling Trinity Tasting Tour

Image of various Teeling Irish Whiskeys on a bar table.

This tour is exactly like the fully guided Teeling Tasting Tour, except It’s better suited for those looking for more than the Teeling Small Batch and who aren’t into whiskey cocktails. On this tour, you’ll sample two Teeling whiskeys in addition to the Teeling Small Batch.

  • Fully guided tour of the distillery
  • Admission to the Exhibition Space
  • Whiskeys besides those on the Teeling Trinity Tasting Tour

You’ll taste the full-flavored, creamy Teeling Small Batch and the sweet and light Teeling Small Grain. Finally, you’ll top it off with the smooth and strong 46% ABV Teeling Single Malt whiskey.

The Teeling Small Batch is the brand’s flagship whiskey. Thanks to no chill filtration, this Irish whiskey maintains its flavorful character. Think layers of cinnamon, vanilla, and oak.

Similarly, the triple-distilled Teeling Small Grain is velvety smooth and imparts a lightly sweet taste. This is partly due to it being matured in cabernet sauvignon wine casks. Plus, its trifecta of pepper, cloves, and nutmeg adds a deliciously mild spiciness to it.

With layers of flavors and aromas, what’s not there to love?

Distillery Select Tasting Tour

Guests tasting whiskey around a bar table and conversing.

Similar to the Teeling Trinity and Teeling Tasting Tours, you’ll enjoy a fully guided tour on the Distillery Select Tasting Tour. However, you’ll sample all (yes, all) whiskeys from the Teeling Trinity and the Teeling Single Pot Still and Distillery Exclusive .

This tour is perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in the Teeling Irish Whiskey range. What better way to do this than to sip on some of their award-winning Irish whiskey?

  • Whiskeys besides those on Distillery Select Tasting Tour

The deliciously creamy single pot still is an innovative take on an Irish classic. With a unique mix of 50% malted and 50% unmalted barley, the triple distilled Teeling Single Pot Still is a slick character.

From their smooth 46% Single Pot Still to their vanilla, caramel, and wood-spice Distillery Exclusive, this is a tour worthy of your time.

  • Fully guided tour
  • Tour an operating distillery
  • Taste award-winning whiskey
  • May feel a little rehearsed
  • Can feel rushed at times
  • Can get quite noisy (with tours running at the same time)

Teeling Whiskey Golden Logo

The Spirit of Dublin

Whiskey making and entrepreneurship have been in the Teeling genes as far back as 1782 when Walter Teeling set up a small craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the industrial centre of Dublin City.

Since 2012, Jack and Stephen Teeling, the latest generation of Teeling whiskey makers, have been putting their own mark on Irish whiskey and came full circle in 2015 when they proudly opened the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery just down the road from where the original family distillery once stood. It is the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years and has won several international accolades for excellence over the years.

What People Say About Us

teeling whiskey tour discount code

The tour was amazing and the whiskey even more! We really enjoyed our tour with my sister! Felix was a great tour guy!
Even if you don’t drink whiskey (your loss ;)) the Teeling Whiskey Tour/Tasting is a must-do in Dublin. Learning about how whiskey is made plus the history of why whisky is not just something to drink, but an important part of Irish culture was awesome. Our guide Aiveen knew everything you’d want to know about the entire process and was engaging and fun. The building is beautiful with a custom bar with Teeling crafted cocktails of which my wife Beth and I are drinking right now :)
Lovely tour definitely the best in dublin, well organised especially for fathers day. Our tour guide Cian was amazing and very interactive, I don't think we could've got a better guide. Tasting was explained very professionally and the old fashioned was unreal🤤
