Fortunately, there are ways you can help mitigate these dangers and keep your beloved bestie safe when riding around town.

Crash-Testing Car Harnesses: Fact and Fiction

Unfortunately, a lot of car harness manufacturers use deceptive marketing practices when advertising their products. This can lull you into a false sense of security and give you the impression that your dog is safer than you think she is.

For example, many manufacturers label their harnesses as having been crash tested. However, this does not mean they passed such tests – only that they were put through the testing procedure.

Instead, you’ll want to find a harness that specifically is labeled as having passed crash test studies.

Other manufacturers may get their harness to pass a crash test, but the test was performed by their own employees or a subsidiary – hardly a way to get non-biased results. These types of studies are rarely published in detail, so it is impossible to determine if they were valid studies or not.

Instead, you want a harness that has been tested by a third-party group, and has passed the test – hopefully with flying colors.

Fortunately, the Center for Pet Safety (CPS) conducts exactly these types of tests and publishes their testing protocols and results so that pet owners can make informed choices.

Currently, there are only three car harnesses that have been crash test certified by the CPS .

However, we’ve also found two other harnesses that have been put through testing protocols we’re at least partially comfortable with. Neither was tested by the CPS, but we believe they still warrant inclusion .

One manufacturer had a university conduct the tests, and we’d generally consider it a safe option. The other only utilized their own testing protocol, so we’re a little less confident about that one. However, budget-limited owners may not have many other options, so we’ve included it anyway .

After all, just about any dog harness for car travel is better than no harness for car travel .

We certainly hold those that’ve been through CPS’s testing protocol to the others, but we wanted to be able to share several options with our readers. It is up to individual pet owners to weigh the various crash-testing procedures employed and make the best possible decision on behalf of their pets.

You may notice that while we only recommend five car harnesses, some other sites have published articles detailing 10 or more.

We’d gladly include more options, but we want to help owners keep their pups safe!

And unfortunately, the vast majority of car harnesses on the market simply haven’t been tested rigorously enough for our standards.

As mentioned, we do include one harness that doesn’t quite live up to the standards we’d prefer, but we do so only because we wanted to include an affordable option for cash-strapped owners.

If you drive with your dog frequently, you’ll want to select a good car harness, which has been crash-test certified and provides all of the things you’d want in a harness.

The following three are the best available options and the only harnesses that have been crash-test certified by the CPS. These are the safest car harnesses out there!

Things to Look for in a Good Car Harness

Aside from selecting a harness that’s been crash-test certified by the CPS, you’ll want to look for one that satisfies a few additional characteristics and features. Some of the most important considerations include:

• Look for harnesses that are easy to adjust . A proper fit is imperative for safety, so you want to select a harness that provides several different places for adjustment. This will help ensure your dog fits well in the harness, no matter her size and shape. This is especially important for thin, lanky breeds, such as greyhounds and a few others.
• Look for harnesses that have dual functionality . Some of the best car harnesses are easy to take out of the car, allowing them to be used as a normal harness. This makes it much easier to get your dog strapped in, especially if you must let her hop in and out several times over the course of a single trip.
• Look for harnesses that have comfortable, wide straps . Although safety (and passing common safety standards) is the most important aspect of a car harness, you’ll also want to make sure it fits your dog comfortably and doesn’t cause discomfort. Wide straps help spread out the forces on your dog and provide a much more comfortable fit than narrow straps do.
• Look for harnesses that are available in the appropriate sizes . Unfortunately, some of the best car harnesses for dogs are only made in sizes suitable for small dogs. Big dogs are at just as much risk of injury during an accident (and, as explained previously, they represent more of a danger to you), so a good harness is just as important for them as it is their smaller counterparts.

Understanding the Danger For Dogs in Cars

Driving or riding in a car is a dangerous practice in any situation, and it is probably the most dangerous activity in which most people engage on a regular basis. But adding a furry four-footer to the mix makes you more likely to have an accident, primarily because dogs have a tendency to distract drivers .

In fact, 65% of drivers in one survey , who bring their dogs along in the car admit to engaging in at least one potentially distracting activity – and that’s only the ones who admit it! Many others probably become distracted without having the courage to admit it.

These types of distractions can occur if your dog simply moves around while the car is in motion, or if you pet her or give her a treat. And because taking your eyes off the road for as little as two seconds doubles your risk for having an accident , this is a serious problem, which must be avoided as much as is possible.

But dogs aren’t just a distraction that increases the chances that you’ll have an accident – they can also cause additional damage and injuries if you are in a fender bender. That’s because unrestrained dogs may fly through the cab of your car or truck if you are in a wreck.

In a best-case scenario, your dog will only slam into you and give you a few bruises; but in a worst-case scenario, your dog may crash into you with enough force to cause serious bodily harm. Even a 10-pound dog will create 500 pounds of force in a 50-mile-per-hour accident. Big dogs are even more dangerous: An 80-pound dog in a 30-mile-per-hour crash can impart 2,400 pounds of force.

These types of forces can certainly injure you, and they’ll likely hurt your dog badly too. But, it is also possible that your dog will hit a window instead of you. This could effectively launch them from the vehicle, which will certainly lead to catastrophic injuries.

It’s the Law (in Some Places): Buckle Your Dog Up!

In some states it’s actually against the law to have an unrestrained dog in your car.

States that have laws stating that your dog must wear a canine-specific restraint in a vehicle include:

• Massachusetts
• New Hampshire
• Rhode Island
• Connecticut

Hawaii actually forbids drivers from having a dog on their lap. Several other states have regulations regarding unrestrained pets in truck beds.

Just be sure to investigate the laws in your state, as some may require (for example) that dogs wear harnesses that use leash attachments to connect directly to the car’s seatbelts, while others may require you to use crates.

Where Should Your Dog Ride In The Car?

In many ways, you’ll want to treat your dog like you would a baby or small child. This means not only using an appropriate harness but also making sure that they ride in the safest part of the car.

Generally, this means the back seat.

The back seat of a car provides the most protection for your dog, as she’ll be contained between and shielded by both rows of seats . Additionally, by being secured in the back seat, you can prevent your dog from crawling around the cab and distracting you.

For dogs who get car anxiety , this back seat also tends to induce less stress; it allows your pup to be positioned fairly close and allow her to see you, which can be a lot less stressful than being in the back cargo area.

By contrast, the rear cargo portion of most SUVs is a crumple zone , which is specifically designed to deform in the case of an accident. This makes the cargo area a very bad place to allow your dog to ride. The front seat is also problematic, as your dog is not shielded from the windshield, and airbags can often injure dogs when they deploy – especially small dogs.

So, be sure to strap your dog in with a good harness, and have her ride in the backseat to keep you both as safe as possible.

Whether You Use a Harness, Crate, or Some Other Kind of Restraint, Secure Your Dog!

Restraint harnesses aren’t the only methods for securing your dog in the car. Dog hammocks, zip lines, booster seats, cage barriers, and car crates are all alternative methods for restraining your dog in the car.

However, it’s worth noting that only harnesses and car crates have been evaluated with any kind of crash test from the Center for Pet Safety .

Other types of restraints — while still worthwhile for keeping your dog from distracting you — are unlikely to provide very much protection in the event of an accident. Nevertheless, using a zip line or one of the other alternative restraint methods is still better than using nothing.

EZY Drive car harness is excellent for medium to large dogs. It has been crash test approved in EU, AUS, & CN. I think it was not submitted for testing in US because it was not available at the time the product was developed. The straps are made from seat belt webbing & are continuous limiting any weak points in which contact points might become detached when under duress. This harness is better for bigger dogs as it is fairly stiff but softens up a bit with use.

Hi Ben, I was looking at the EzyDog Drive car harness as well. It seems like it might be better than SleepyPod because it ensures sure the harness covers a large surface area and distributes the weight evenly. Although, it’s not padded.

According to Pups Pal and the Ezy Dog website, the harness was tested USA (FMVSS 213), Europe (ECE Regulation 21), Australia (ADR42/04) for certification of Child Safety Seats. It’s unclear if they “passed,” haha, but maybe you’ll have better luck than me.

I have a dachshund. He is 17 lbs and very hard to find a harness that fits him well due to his girth. They are either to small or too big.

We have had excellent results with the Champion Canine Seatbelt System with our basset hounds (50-65 pounds). We have used these products for more than 10 years and have had no problems with the products and no injuries to our dogs. USA K9 Outfitters offer a number of different sizes and their system also includes straps and links to hook your canine friend into the seatbelts or other secured points. They also have an even larger size for 80 – 200 pound dogs.

What did you do to my home state of Michigan on your map?!

It would appear that Michigan was involved in some sort of terrible Photoshop accident. We meant no offense and apologize to the entire Wolverine State. 😉

I think something that may be worthy to note; very few crash tests have actually been done. The Center for Pet Safety did this single study way back in 2013. While I don’t necessarily question the safety of the products listed, I do question the relevance of the Center for Pets Safety. In the last 6 years there have been many changes in the industry; new products have been designed and companies that failed to pass in 2013 have since made many changes and advancements. For this reason, I do not trust the results since there is no accurate comparison of products that are listed on the market today. I do not think consumers can look to the Center for Pet Safety for any up-to-date information for car safety.

I volunteer as a Pet Adviser for the Dachshund Breed Council and I am horrified that the Rocketeer is being recommended for all breeds of small dogs. Dachshunds are known to be the breed at the highest risk for intervertebral disc disease, with up to 25% affected at some point in their lives. Sitting upright like that for extended periods of time is highly likely to put significant additional pressure on their discs and increase the odds of them being affected. So whilst it might be one of the safest harnesses in a crash, the odds of such an event are way, way lower than the risk that such a harness will increase the chances of a back condition that may cause intense pain, paralysis and even death.

I have a 60 lb medical service dog who needs to be in front seat. I am looking for options for restraint device that still allows him to do his job.

Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be any great options for greyhounds (and other lanky breeds) on the market at the moment. At least, none that we could find that were crash-test certified.

So, I’d recommend just going with one of the non-crash-tested options until somebody starts addressing this gap in the marketplace. Just make sure to have your pooch ride in the back seat and drive carefully in the interim.

The Pawaboo Harness looks to be pretty good for a non-crash-tested product, and there were a few photos posted by owners of skinny dogs with pseudo-greyhound builds.

If you want one that will actually keep your dog safe in the car, it really has to be one of the harnesses listed here. If you’re just looking for walking harness, that’s a different situation (and we’d probably say go with something from Ruffwear).

• Size: Pick a carrier that’s big enough for your pet to comfortably stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. The carrier should be as long as the tip of the dog’s nose to the base of the tail, according to veterinarian Dr. Kristen L. Nelson . Carriers will usually come in a variety of sizes to fit different breed types (though keep in mind that airline-approved carriers have very specific dimension requirements that will usually only fit small dogs under 20 pounds, according to our experts). 
• Materials and build: Carriers are usually soft-sided and made of polyester or nylon, which are easy to clean and water- and tear-resistant, according to our experts. Choose a carrier with mesh sides to provide a good amount of ventilation. Most importantly, you should opt for a carrier that can stand up on its own and not collapse around your pet or deform easily, says Dr. Christina Carlo , a veterinarian and medical director at VCA Avondale Veterinary Hospital. Away the pet carrier.

I use this carrier to fly with my 16-pound havachon, Bella, because it’s sturdy and makes her feel safe and supported thanks to its durable nylon and leather construction. The mesh gives her enough visibility to know what’s going on outside and helps me keep tabs on her, too. How to shop for a dog travel carrier.

Carriers and crates are the most secure type of enclosure when traveling with your dog because they prevent them from escaping and minimize distraction while you’re traveling (especially while driving), according to Wolko. But the right carrier for your dog will depend on what type of trip you’re taking, your method of transportation and their temperament.. When shopping for the right carrier for your dog, our experts recommend considering the size and fit of the enclosure, whether it’s crash-tested, if it meets airline requirements and more.

Your dog or cat should be able to easily stand up, turn around and lay comfortably in their carrier. That means the length of your carrier from front to back should measure about the same, or one or two inches more than the tip of your dog’s nose to the base of their tail, according to Nelson. You should add a few more inches for brachycephalic breeds like pugs, pekingese and French bulldogs, though experts don’t recommend taking these breeds on flights because their shorter noses increase the risk of overheating and oxygen deprivation, says Nelson (some airlines even ban this breed from flying in the cargo hold , according to the American Veterinary Medical Association). To determine the right height of your carrier, make sure it measures the same or larger than the height of your pet from the floor to the top of their shoulders, says Carlo.

Place a mat or bed in the carrier to make the space more comfortable for your pet, says Carlo (though you should avoid this if your dog usually destroys their bedding because they might eat the pieces and cause intestinal obstruction). Putting soft blankets or their favorite toy in the carrier can also help promote familiarity and make them feel safe, according to our experts.

Whether your dog can see out of their carrier is a matter of personal preference, though our experts recommend mesh so the outside is visible, which helps avoid your dog feeling threatened or confused while they’re traveling, says Wolko. 

Materials and structure

Most carriers are soft-sided and made from materials like polyester, mesh and nylon fabric. Consider whether the carrier has structure, meaning it can stand up on its own and won’t automatically collapse around your pet, according to Carlo. You should also look for carriers that have pockets, so you have room for your pet supplies.

You can take a hard-sided, non-collapsible crate or kennel on an airplane, but they must be able to fit under the passenger’s seat, according to Hauser (this might be harder to do compared to soft-sided carriers since they don’t mold to a different size). Plastic hard-sided crates are usually good for transporting your pet in an airplane cargo hold and the cargo area of a car — they’re considered to be the safest option since they won’t lose their shape and provide impact protection in case of a crash, turbulence or hard fall, according to our experts. However, you should avoid metal wire crates because pets might be able to stick their feet or limbs out, which can be a safety hazard while traveling, says Karwacki.

Safety considerations

For car travel, look for carriers and crates that have undergone crash testing by the Center for Pet Safety, a registered nonprofit and advocacy organization that crash tests car restraints and containment devices. This provides an extra layer of safety when traveling with your pet, our experts say.

“Most carriers on the market only prevent distractions [for the driver], which is important, but in a crash, they may not perform as you would expect them to,” says Wolko. The CPS certification tests carriers as an unaffiliated third party. This is important when considering that many brands subjectively “pass” their carriers if they test them in their own labs, which can ultimately give pet owners a false sense of security, according to Wolko.

Though the CPS does not specifically test carriers and crates for airline travel, you can use most carriers that meet the airline’s size requirements and have ample ventilation, according to Wolko.

A CPS-certified crate usually has backup door latches and locking mechanisms to prevent your pet from escaping, which is especially useful if they travel in the aircraft’s cargo hold. “So, if something tumbles, the kennel is so robust that the pet is not getting out,” says Wolko. Most airlines have certain regulations for what carriers to use when transporting an animal in the cargo area of a plane. The International Air Transport Association, a globally recognized trade association for the world’s airlines, details specific requirements for crates to transport animals in the cargo hold, including construction and adequate ventilation (more on that below).

What size pet carrier is allowed on a plane?

For air travel, always check with your airline to see what type and size of carrier it allows. The approved dimensions of your carrier vary from airline to airline but, in most cases, carriers can’t exceed 11 inches in height, which allows it to fit under the seat in front of the passenger, according to Hauser. Also, the carrier will likely count as your carry-on luggage on most airlines, and in-cabin travel will usually require you to make a reservation or reserve a seat specifically for your dog.

What is the pet weight limit for air travel?

Certain airlines might also have specific pet size and weight requirements for in-cabin travel. Typically, pets must weigh 20 pounds or less, though this varies by airline, and most larger dogs can’t ride in-cabin unless they’re a trained service animal, according to Wolko. If your pet exceeds that limit, they’ll need to travel in the cargo area of the plane.

Most airlines will allow trained service dogs on board at no cost. However, several airlines like Delta Air Lines, Southwest, American Airlines and Alaska Air are no longer accepting emotional support animals on board.

What is the difference between a carrier and a crate? 

Carriers and crates for dogs are usually used interchangeably, but there are a few key differences. The CPS defines crates as enclosures that are secured in the cargo area of a plane or tethered securely to the floor of a vehicle like a van or SUV. They’re usually constructed of thick molded plastic or metal and designed for larger dogs, according to our experts.

Carriers, on the other hand, are usually designed for smaller dogs and made of a soft-sided fabric (though some are constructed of a harder plastic or nylon to prevent them from collapsing on your pet). When traveling in a car, the carrier usually goes in the backseat and is strapped in using the seatbelt system of your vehicle.

Is it safe to travel with a pet in the cargo area?

Yes, it is generally safe and common to travel with your dog in the cargo hold (also known as the lower deck) of an airplane, which also holds baggage. However, experts recommend only flying your pet in the cargo hold when it’s absolutely necessary because it can be a very stressful experience for them. 

“There’s a lot of weird noises, not much light down there — it’d be scary for anyone to go in the [cargo hold], ” says Karwacki. And, most handling risks come before they even board the plane: Dogs usually endure the most force when being transported across the rough, uneven tarmac to get to the plane, says Wolko.

The IATA lists specific requirements for crates, including construction and ventilation, to keep your pet safe when flying in the cargo hold. For example, the trade association specifies that crates must be sturdy and inescapable and adequately ventilated on three sides, with the majority of the ventilation being provided on the upper part of the container.

Most aircraft cargo holds are temperature-controlled and pressurized, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture . Animals can’t be exposed to temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 4 hours, per the USDA’s website. Most airlines won’t transport dogs altogether if ground temperatures reach those extremes.

How to help your dog feel calm in a travel carrier

Your pet’s comfort level in their carrier can determine how smooth your travels are. Below, we list a few expert tips about how to get your dog adjusted to their carrier and how to keep them comfortable during long trips.

• Know your dog’s safety and security preferences. Some dogs prefer more open-sided kennels with better airflow and visibility, while others feel safer with the cave-like security of a molded plastic carrier with smaller windows, says Hauser.
• Make the carrier or crate their “happy spot.” Allowing your pet to build a positive association with their carrier helps them feel calm and safe while traveling, according to our experts. In your home and before traveling, leave the door open so that your pup can explore the enclosure on their own terms, which demystifies it, says Hauser. After some time, it isn’t uncommon to find pets that preferentially sleep in their enclosures,” she says. Once they get acclimated to the crate or carrier at home, you can then graduate to car trips and, later on, plane rides. Start off with brief trips that increase in duration over time.
• Make the carrier feel familiar. As we mentioned, putting their favorite bed, blankets or toys in the carrier can help make them feel more comfortable.
• Avoid any safety risks while on the plane. For example, if you’re traveling with your pet in-cabin, never put the carrier in the overhead compartment of the plane with your pet inside because it poses a suffocation risk, says Wolko. Also, feed your pet before you get on the plane — if they choke or get something lodged in their throat while you’re in the air, they likely won’t get help in time, according to Wolko.

To get expert recommendations and tips for traveling with a pet, we spoke with Dr. Gina Rendon, medical director at Williamsburg Vet Clinic in Brooklyn, New York, and Dr. Catriona Love, medical director at Mercer Street Veterinary Hospital in Seattle, Washington. They shared important safety and logistical tips for traveling with your pet.

Cleaning just takes a little bit of soap and water, though you’ll want to make sure the inside is completely dry before closing the lid to avoid mildew from moisture. The 35-pound capacity is great for longer trips or multiple dogs, and the wheely bottoms mean no heavy lifting. We also like that there’s an included scoop. While it may not be small enough to take on the plane, the top container can easily fit into the backseat or trunk of a car.

They are gentle enough to use from nose to tail (just avoid eyes and inside the ears), and we love that we don’t have to worry about dogs getting sick if they happen to lick an area that’s just been wiped. One of our editors keeps a pack stashed in their dog’s carrier to clean his paws after walks or to give a light, impromptu, all-over bath anytime on the go. Wipes come in 30-sheet packs with a plastic snap closure to seal in moisture, and they’re small enough to tuck into the pocket of your pet carrier for easy access.

You need to download an app, and we found it easy to set up and navigate. We were impressed by how accurate the tracking was through Google Maps, pinpointing not only the dog’s exact address, but also the specific area of the house she was moving through. This will be incredibly useful for travel or hiking with dogs. Owners will get alerts when their dog has moved beyond boundaries, and they can also set up temperature alerts, turn on the built-in flashlight through the app, and do real-time checks on health symptoms. There’s even a step counter. The catch? You’ll need a subscription for this wearable to work. Subscriptions have three options; monthly, yearly, and two-year. This wearable comes with two attachment options and a wall charger. 

Best Dog Seat Belt

Unlike many dog seat belts, the Kurgo Direct to Seat Belt Swivel Tether for Dogs clips directly into your car's seat belt fastener versus looping around the headrest. This tether is designed to attach to a dog harness instead of a collar, centering the pull of the tether on your dog's torso rather than their neck. The swivel-head carabiner harness attachment also allows your pet to move around without getting tangled. While this car seat tether works with most cars, it is incompatible with the seat belt fasteners in Ford F-series trucks.

A top pet travel tip from Dr. Rendon is to "be mindful and plan for the temperatures of the places to which you are traveling" and prepare accordingly. Bring coats and booties if it's cold and cooling mats or vests if it's hot. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Dog Cooling Harness functions as an evaporative cooling vest and lightweight harness that stays wet to keep your pet up to six times cooler in high temps. Triple-layer cooling panels — wicking outer layer, absorbing middle layer, and an inner dry layer — are located along the chest, stomach, and back. A padded, quick-grab handle allows you to assist your pet easily when needed. Plus, the simple and intuitive side-buckle design makes it a snap to get on and off. The harness's aluminum V-ring clips and reinforced loops can hold up to the demands of rugged outdoor adventures. Bonus? The XXS size was a perfect fit for my medium-size, heat-intolerant (and harness-trained) cat. When it's time to clean, it calls for the gentle cycle and air dry only.

To continue on the theme of preparing for the weather, you can keep your cat or small dog toasty with the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat. This is a great travel pet accessory to take camping, on car rides in cold temperatures, or for accommodations without central heating. This bed is big enough for any size cat and small dogs.

Best Dog Boots

Some owners even use these boots indoors on slippery hardwood floors thanks to the heavily textured Vibram outsoles. The actual shoes are made from mesh, giving your dog's paws a bit of breathing room in hot climates. The gusset design makes it easy to take these shoes off and on. While these shoes work well on salted pavement and in freezing temperatures (with socks), the short-rise design isn't ideal for walks in more than an inch or so of snow.

Heat, stress, and anxiety may cause your pet to become thirstier and more dehydrated than usual. For trips with her small chihuahua, Dr. Love prefers the Kalimdor Portable Dog Water Bottle because of its small size and leak-proof design. This one-handed, two-in-one design has a plastic bottle base that can store up to 19 ounces of water (most bottles only hold up to 16 ounces). The scooped-out top functions as a water bowl that holds up to 2.8 ounces of water. Liquid is released directly into the drinking area by unlocking a switch and pushing a button. You can recollect any unused water in the storage bottle instead of tossing it out. The compact design makes it easy to carry in a travel bag or backpack, or you can loop it around your wrist. Our one note is that we wish this had a built-in filter.

Best Portable Litter Box

Finding a decent travel litter box is one of the biggest challenges of traveling with a cat. The Travel Cat Porta-Pawty Travel Litter Box solves multiple problems, including wasting litter. Its construction also helps to block odors, which makes stays at pet-friendly hotels more comfortable for everyone involved. According to Dr. Rendon, "Zylkene calming supplements are derived from milk protein and recommended by behaviorists." They can be used for cats or dogs and are a good option for owners who want to try over-the-counter remedies before getting a sedating prescription like Gabapentin or Trazodone from their vet. This supplement's active ingredient, alpha-casozepine, has natural calming properties. Although it's derived from cow's milk, it is lactose-free. The dosage is administered according to weight and can be given in its original capsule form or as a powder mixed into food by opening the capsules. Dr. Rendon recommends starting the supplements a few days before travel. Every pet is different, and Zylkene may not be effective on some animals.

Best First-aid Kit

Love hiking with your dog or running on the beach together? Or do you just want to be prepared for everyday outing accidents? This first-aid kit is a two-in-one medical kit you can keep in your car or toss in your backpack before an outdoor adventure. It comes with two separate pouches of medical supplies — one for you and one for your dog — that can cover basic first-aid needs like splinter and tick removal, wound irrigation, cuts and scrapes, and more. We combed through results from seven different pet product tests to find some of the recommendations in this roundup, specifically looking for the most travel-friendly options. We tested over 130 pet products, including dog food storage containers, dog backpack carriers, dog car seats, car seat covers, cat carriers, dog crates, and GPS collars. Some staple attributes we tested for in each category included design, performance, value, and ease of use. For carriers, crates, and backpacks, we introduced the products to our pets, carried them around in the carrier, crate, or backpack for 10-15 minutes, and noted how comfortable the item was for both ourselves and our pets. We also did a test run through all the features and cleaning. For dog car seats, we drove around with our dogs in the car seat for a week and then cleaned the car seat, again noting how comfortable we both seemed and the ease of cleaning. All tested products were put through real-world testing scenarios in order to accurately assess their overall performance and value for readers and their pets. We also included T+L editor recommendations that they personally use for their own pets for portable pet bowls and grooming wipes.

Check airline and FAA requirements ahead of travel

Nearly every airline has its own rules for flying with a pet. Check with your airline well ahead of your flight to confirm if your animal will be able to fly on the plane. Many airlines accept service animals but limit the qualifications to certain breeds and type of service. Additionally, short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs such as pugs and Persians are often not allowed to fly in cargo due to breathing concerns . Most flights only allow for a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight or will only fly with pets in the cargo during certain months. It's wise to make a reservation for your pet well in advance to secure them a spot on board.

Consider microchipping your pet

If your pet isn't already microchipped, your upcoming trip may be just the right excuse to get it done. This is to help others identify your pet and locate the owner in case your pet escapes or runs away during travel. Collars also provide this information but can easily slip off in different circumstances. Microchipping your pet is added protection that you'll be reunited if they get lost and may be required for international trips.

Map out walk and bathroom breaks ahead of time

When planning your trips and travel time, be sure to pencil-in some time for your pet to use the bathroom — and find out where they can relieve themselves. In some (but not all) airports, there are dedicated pet relief areas with fake grass where dog owners can take their pets to use the bathroom. Options for cat owners are far fewer, which is why having a portable litter box on hand is so, well, handy.

According to Dr. Rendon, one of the most important things you can do when traveling with your pet is to check each state or country's travel requirements well in advance of your trip. "You should contact your veterinarian or check the APHIS Pet Travel website for specific requirements," she says. "You may need a health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and approved by an APHIS veterinary officer in order to travel internationally. Your airline may also have specific requirements. Don't wait until the day before you travel to obtain the necessary paperwork!"

You must book a reservation for your pet in advance — some airlines allow you to do it online or through their app, while others will require a phone call.

"If you need to travel with your pet and they are too big to fly in the cabin with you (typically larger than 20 pounds), then cargo is a totally acceptable way to bring them," Dr. Love says. "It is always better to have them in the cabin with you because you can be with them, but that isn't always an option."

Both vets agree that the biggest downside to flying your pet in the cargo is that you're unable to monitor them or give them any anti-nausea or calming medicine as needed. Keep in mind that the cargo area is not temperature controlled and you should avoid flying your pets in very hot or very cold months.

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe while traveling is to keep them calm. "Don't wait until the day of travel to introduce your animal to a carrier or crate," suggests Dr. Rendon. "Place a familiar blanket or one of your worn T-shirts in the carrier with your animal so it smells like home. Carriers should be lined with a towel and covered with a disposable wee-wee pad that can be changed if an animal soils the pad mid-trip." She also recommends limiting the size of the meal you feed your pet before traveling in case of nausea. 

Dr. Love recommends exercising your pet before travel so they are more relaxed or having someone sit in the backseat with them.

The cost of flying with a pet depends on the airline, where you are flying to, and whether you're flying your pet cargo or traveling with them inside the cabin. For example, Delta charges $95 for domestic flights with a carry-on pet, $75 for flights from the U.S. to Brazil, and $200 for other international flights, and you must contact the airline directly to determine cargo fees. United Airlines charges $125 each way for a carry-on pet for domestic flights. American Airlines charges $125 for a carry-on pet within and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (based on each country's entry policy). 

Different airlines have restrictions on the age and breed of pets they allow to travel in the cabin. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover or connection of more than four hours, additional fees may apply for each connection segment. Check with your desired airline for specific pricing and restrictions.

Deciding how long your pet should ride in the car with you will be up to your individual pet. Some dogs may get antsy and need to go on their regularly scheduled walks, burn off energy, and use the bathroom. Monitor your pet during the car ride and check for signs of anxiety.

What To Look For

Size Guidelines

The exterior measurements of the carrier you select must fall within the sizing guidelines provided by the airline provider for your flight. A typical limitation is that pet carriers need to be within 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches tall to fly in the cabin. Some airlines also have a maximum weight for your pet plus their carrier, but this varies between airlines, so we recommend using the guidelines provided by the airline you intend to fly with your pet most frequently. Easy Carrying

The soft-sided kennel must be leak-proof and have ventilation openings on three sides for domestic travel and four sides for international travel.

The maximum carry-on kennel dimensions are determined by the aircraft dimensions of your flight, as the under-seat space varies by aircraft. Delta recommends a soft-sided kennel with maximum dimensions of 18” x 11” x 11” since this fits most aircraft types.”

Is it safe to carry your dog in a backpack?

For some dogs, yes, but only in backpacks specifically designed to hold a dog. Keep a copy of your pet’s vaccine records with your travel bags in case you need to access records after your vet’s office is closed, make sure they are up to date before you leave!

Also find the contact info for the closest emergency vet as soon as you reach your destination (if not before). Having this information before an emergency occurs can save precious time if the worst were to happen.

Make it home safe

Microchipping is a popular means of identification for your pet if they were ever lost. Keep your information up to date with the microchip company to ensure if your pet was lost they have the most current information to reach you.

Practice basic obedience. When your pet listens to basic commands: sit, stay, down, off, leave it, they can readily avoid trouble if it arises. Additionally, ensuring your pet has good car “manners” can help avoid “darting” out of car doors or windows.

Subway Strays: The Dogs of Moscow’s Metro

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, the stray dogs in Moscow have a surprisingly well-documented history which animal behaviorists have been paying close attention to for several decades. During the Soviet period in Russia the packs of wild (or stray) dogs in were regulated. Only the clever canines who learned to stay in isolation were able to survive. Usually, these dogs would remain on the outskirts of the city hunting in wild packs, as the living in the city was dangerous and food scarce.  After the fall of the Soviet Union quality of life in Russia began to slowly improve and with it more street vendors and food collecting in busy neighborhoods. This began to bring some the stray dogs out of the suburbs into the city.

Today, there are nearly 35,000 stray dogs that call Moscow home. Out of these 35,000 stray dogs there are about 500 that have taken to living underground. Out of these dogs, there are a few that have started thinking outside the box and inside the boxcar. They have begun the slow move underground to stay out of the cold (Russian winters reach an average of -5 degrees every day). Many of the Russian commuters embraced the dog’s underground migration by petting them or giving them food.

Though these claims may seem like the made up type of internet misinformation that we have learned to be skeptical of these days, it is actually sourced to a Russian biologist by the name of  Dr. Andrey Poyarkov , a highly regarded scientist in his field of study. As it turns out Poyarkov has been studying these dogs for the last thirty years and told news sources back in 2010 that he suspected a small fraction of these underground dogs had actually learned to use the subway in order to beg for food in bustling urban areas where food is more plentiful.

Andrei Neuronov , an animal behaviorist, says much like you train your dogs at home to respond to verbal commands like “sit” or “stay,” the Moscow metro dogs are using audio cues from the subway stops they have learned. The dogs memorize the names of the stops to navigate the subway systems in order to take them to heavily populated places during the day and get food.  Then, they return to their more secluded corners of the suburbs at night where they are less likely to be bothered by people.  Here is a story ABC did back in 2011, talking about this very thing.

The father of one of the aid workers killed in a 1 April air strike in Gaza has called for an independent investigation into the attack.

John Flickinger, father of Jacob Flickinger, paid tribute to his 33-year-old son, while also indicating Israel should face consequences for its actions.

Jacob, a dual US and Canadian citizen, was part of the relief team working to bring aid to Gazans in need with the charity World Central Kitchen.

"To ask Israel to investigate itself is like asking the perpetrator to investigate themselves," Mr Flickinger said.

"We need some an independent investigation outside of the Israeli government.

"So far there have been no consequences, so the time for idle words is over," he added.

"Consequences should have been effective a long time ago.

"Humanitarian aid workers have been targeted throughout this conflict. Over 200 Gazan workers have been killed."

Paying tribute to his son, Mr Flickinger said he was "very adventurous" and "a devoted friend".

"He loved the outdoors. Rock climbing, hiking, camping, a lot of wilderness survival stuff. He would go out, do winter camping in the snow with basically nothing."

"He was a devoted friend. Probably the best friend that you could ever have and that's kind of come out last week in the outpouring of support for him from friends all over the world really. He was dedicated to serving others. He wanted to make a difference in the world."

Jacob served for more than 10 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and had been deployed to Afghanistan. His father said he joined World Central Kitchen last autumn in Acapulco, Mexico.

Mr Flickinger said he and his son discussed the risk of working in Gaza.

"He said, 'Dad, people are starving there, and I think I can help'. And I appreciated that, and he was confident to a degree and that the World Central Kitchen had been on the ground there since the beginning of the conflict."

Human rights lawyers have filed a lawsuit against a German government decision to approve the export of 3,000 anti-tank weapons to Israel, the second case of its kind this month.

Last week, Berlin lawyers said they had filed an urgent appeal to halt exports of war weapons to Israel, citing reasons to believe they were being used in ways that could violate international humanitarian law in Gaza. 

The latest case, brought by five Palestinians from Gaza, was supported by lawyers from the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin and Palestinian human rights organisations, the ECCHR said in a statement. 

ECCHR said the government granted export clearance for 3,000 anti-tank weapons to Israel after the 7 October attack, but an export permit application for 10,000 rounds of ammunition to Israel had yet to be approved. 

"Germany cannot remain true to its values if it exports weapons to a war in which serious violations of international humanitarian law are obvious," ECCHR secretary general Wolfgang Kaleck said. 

The lawyers called on the Berlin administrative court to suspend the export licenses as a provisional legal protection measure. 

The German government has said it examines each arms export individually and takes a number of factors into account, including human rights and humanitarian law. 

In February, a group of German lawyers representing families in Gaza filed a criminal complaint against German officials for allegedly aiding and abetting genocide against the Palestinian people by providing Israel with weapons. 

Last year, Germany approved arms exports to Israel worth €326.5m (£278.8m), including military equipment and war weapons, a 10-fold increase compared with 2022.

We reported earlier that France has warned its citizens not to travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel or the Palestinian territories (see 11.07am post). 

Now India has advised its citizens against traveling to Iran and Israel until further notice in view of the "prevailing situation in the region", the foreign ministry said on Friday. 

It said Indians in the two countries should observe "utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum".

More images have come in showing the vast destruction in the city of Khan Younis, days after the Israeli military withdrew the majority of its forces from Gaza. 

Residents were left stunned and distraught as they slowly returned to their homes this week - only to find large parts of the city in ruins.

Despite the ground assault ending, airstrikes have continued in the past few days across Gaza.

Israeli forces have shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, near Tubas in the occupied West Bank on Friday following a raid on the town earlier in the morning, the military said. 

It said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, whom it described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area of the Jordan Valley, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces. 

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed al Qassem Brigades. 

The Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Fara refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas said it mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member.

The Israeli military said the first humanitarian aid trucks entered through a newly opened northern crossing point on Thursday.

Israel said the trucks were inspected at the Kerem Shalom crossing point on the border with Egypt before moving north to cross.

Israel had said earlier this month it would re-open the Erez crossing point that had been closed since the start of the war with Hamas last October. 

The country has said it would step up supplies in the face of mounting pressure to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Israel is preparing for a "direct" attack from Iran as soon as today or Saturday, it is being reported.

US news outlet the Wall Street Journal cited a person "familiar with the matter". However, the newspaper said a source briefed by the Iranian leadership said that while plans were being discussed, no final decision on the attack has been made.

It also reported that the attack could be within Israel's borders, as opposed to Israeli interests elsewhere.

Iran has vowed to avenge last week's strike on its embassy in Damascus, Syria, which killed top Iranian military officials - although it is reported to have made clear to US officials that any response will be non-escalatory.

France's foreign ministry has issued a recommendation for French citizens not to travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel or the Palestinian Territories. 

The ministry said it was also bringing back the relatives of Iran-based diplomats and that French civil servants were now banned from conducting any missions in Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

For context: Tensions have ratcheted up in region - which is already strained by the Gaza war - in the wake of an attack last week on the Iranian embassy in Syria. 

The airstrike on 1 April in Damascus killed a top Iranian general and six other Iranian military officers.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Israel "must be punished and it shall be", adding that it was tantamount to an attack on Iranian soil.

Elsewhere, Argentina's highest criminal court has found that Iran planned the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre headquarters in Buenos Aires.

It also concluded that Lebanon’s Hezbollah group then carried out the attack, which killed 85 people and wounded 300. 

Argentina's Court of Cassation said the attack came in retaliation for Argentina reneging on a nuclear cooperation deal with Tehran. 

Alleging Iran's "political and strategic" role in the bombing, the court paved the way for victims' families to bring lawsuits against the country. 

In the past three decades, Iran has not turned over citizens convicted in Argentina.

Aeroflot Russian Airlines flying with pets

Are passengers allowed to travel with pets on aeroflot flights.

Passengers may travel on Aeroflot flights with domesticated cats, dogs and birds . Other animals such as ferrets, meerkats, mini-lop rabbits, fennec foxes, lorises, polecats, pygmy hedgehogs, marmosets etc. will only be accepted for carriage if they are tamed . Pets may be transported in the passenger cabin or cargo hold .

The following animals are not accepted for carriage either in the cabin or as checked baggage:

• Brachycephalic dog breeds.
• Rodents (guinea pigs, rats, squirrels, gerbils, marmots, jerboas, etc.).
• Reptiles (tortoises, turtles, frogs, iguanas, lizards, geckos, chameleons, snakes, etc.).
• Arthropods (arachnids, insects, crustaceans, etc.).
• Fish, fish seed and other animals that must be transported in water.
• Wild animals or birds, large predators (untamed pets).
• Sick or experimental animals.
• Animals whose weight together with the container exceeds 50 kg.

Do I need to make advance arrangements when traveling with my pet?

If you intend to travel with your pet, you must inform Aeroflot at the time of booking, but no later than 36 hours before your flight . Passengers traveling with pets can check in only at the airport check-in desk .

Pets are accepted for transportation only if accompanied by an adult passenger and upon the consent of Aeroflot. Also, the passenger must provide the necessary documents that are stipulated by the applicable legislation of the Russian Federation, international treaties and laws of the countries included in the itinerary.

The required travel documents for pets are:

• Veterinary passport
• Medical certificate (issued at any state veterinary clinic and containing information on vaccinations administered to the animal at certain ages; the last anti-rabies inoculation must have been administered no earlier than one year prior and no later than one month before departure).
• A certificate from either of the two licensed Moscow breeding clubs, SKOR or RKF, stating that the animal presents no breeding value (certificates obtained from any other club may result in delays at customs).

In some countries, very strict regulations apply for pet transportation, and it is recommended to find information about the regulations of the destination country in advance.

Pets in the Passenger Cabin

Only one pet cage per passenger is allowed for transportation in the cabin. Several birds of the same species can be transported in the same container. The weight of the pet, the weight of the container (cage) and the food intended for feeding the pets must not exceed 8 kg (18 lbs) .

Pets should be transported in cages with free air access. The cage must be equipped with a strong lock. Maximum cage size (overall sum of three dimensions of the container) is 125 cm for rigid carriers and 135 cm for soft pet carriers . Passengers with pets must not be placed in the area of emergency exits or near the kitchens and toilets.

Pets transported in the passenger cabin are not included in the free baggage allowance , and their transportation must be paid by the passenger in accordance with the fee established by Aeroflot:

• 3750 RUB – domestic flights.
• 75 EUR/USD – international flights.

Pets in the Cargo Hold

If the weight of the pet plus cage exceeds 8 kg, the pet can only be transported in the cargo hold . Transportation of pets in the baggage compartment of the aircraft is only allowed inside a container with a maximum weight of 50 kg . Only one pet per cage is allowed for transportation as checked baggage.

Pets must be transported in a container (cage) that provides the necessary facilities for the duration of the flight, provides access of air and is equipped with a reliable locking device. The size of the container must allow the pet to stand up and turn 360 degrees. The bottom of the cage must be water-proof and covered with absorbent material. The container must exclude spillage of the absorbent material. Birdcages must be covered with a thick black cloth.

Pets transported in the baggage compartment are not included in the free baggage allowance . Aeroflot will charge an additional fee :

Service Dogs

Service Dogs are accepted for transportation upon the presentation of the documents confirming the passenger’s disability and the special training of the service dog to Aeroflot or its authorized agent . Service Dogs are transported free of charge in the passenger cabin , in excess of the baggage allowance and without consideration of its weight . Service Dogs must have a collar and muzzle, sit at the feet of the accompanied passenger and be tied to the chair. Seats at the rear of the cabin will be assigned to passengers traveling with a Service Dog.
