Yonex VCORE Tour 89 Racquet Review

tour 89

  • Maneuverability
  • Headsize feels larger than 89 sq. in.
  • Nothing we could agree on

The newest addition to the popular lineup of Yonex mid headsize racquets, the VCORE Tour 89, can be regarded as one of the best and most playable racquets in its weight class. Just like the Yonex mids of old, this racquet plays much larger than its 89 square inch head. Yonex's unique Isometric head shape expands the sweetspot and allows more room for off-center hits. The two things that stood out the most on the court were control and maneuverability. Our playtesters found this racquet very easy to swing and could direct their shots with pinpoint precision. In addition, this racquet offered exceptional pop for its small head size, along with superb touch and feel. This stick has become a favorite here at Tennis Warehouse among players who like mid-sized racquets. If you favor 95 square inch and smaller head sizes, we recommend you give the VCORE Tour 89 a try.

Groundstrokes - Score: 84

All of our playtesters loved hitting with this racquet from the baseline. Troy loved the maneuverability and the control he got from the VCORE Tour 89 . He said, "The lack of precision that I experienced with the 97 square inch version was cured with this mid-sized version. I loved how I could dictate play and move my opponents around the court, especially off the forehand side. The feel was superb and aided the predictability of my shots. Even though the weight and balance were fairly close to the midplus, this version felt more maneuverable, allowing me to easily generate racquet head speed. The backhand slice came naturally with this racquet. I could carve the ball with backspin, and it was skidding low off the bounce. Topspin wasn't as easy to generate compared to the midplus, and the sweetspot was a bit unforgiving at times, but the precision from this mid is unmatchable."

Chris felt the racquet was very forgiving for its head size. He said, "In typical Yonex fashion, this racquet felt much more forgiving than its head size would suggest. The sweetspot felt generous -- almost 95 square inch-like in its feel -- and I was surprised by the amount of power offered even on off-center shots. I really enjoyed hitting my one-handed backhand with this racquet. I loved the way it came through the contact zone. It seemed to cut through the air well and allowed me easier access to racquet head speed than other racquets at a comparable weight. I was getting good topspin, which allowed me to both roll the ball and drive the ball with power, letting the spin bring it in. On slice shots I was driving through the ball well, but I wasn't getting quite the skid off the bounce that I get from the Volkl C10 Pro I've recently been hitting."

Andy loved how solid the racquet felt and how maneuverable it was. He said, "I loved the feel of the VCORE on the groundstrokes. It was extremely solid and had great plow through. It felt very maneuverable and it was easy to get through the hitting zone quickly. It felt simply amazing when I flattened out the ball. However, because of the smaller head size it was a little difficult to generate a lot of topspin consistently. I think this is just because there is not much room with the small head, and thus not much forgiveness if you don't hit the ball in the middle of the strings. Other than that, it was awesome on the groundies!"

Confidence was easy to come by from the baseline for Mark , who said, "I have been favoring racquets with smaller head sizes lately, so I was pretty excited to be a part of this playtest. Within the first five minutes of groundstrokes I had already decided that I liked this racquet. From my backhand slice to hitting topspin off both wings, I felt confident from all areas of the court within a short period of time."

tour 89

Volleys - Score: 85

Everyone really liked the feel of the VCORE Tour 89 at net as well. Loving the solid feel and pinpoint control was Chris . He said, "At net this racquet felt crisp, precise and rock solid. I felt very dialed in on my volleys. I could punch volleys deep with pace and great control. I also found enough stability to allow for a very soft grip on the handle on touch shots. The result was excellent feel and control on drop volleys and angles. I also liked the stability on tough shoelace volleys and when I was stretched wide. In tough situations I found enough mass and punch from the racquet to keep my volleys on target with good pace."

Troy was getting surgical as he ventured his way up to the net, saying, "Scalpel-like precision is what sums up this racquet when at net. I felt I could place the ball anywhere I wanted. This racquet possessed all the stability of the midplus, but with a lot more feel. There were times when the small sweetspot made it difficult to connect, but overall I was more effective with this stick than with the midplus. I found myself going for short angles and drop volleys because the feel of this racquet gave me a lot of confidence."

Mark was feeling confident with this racquet in hand on the volley. He said, "In terms of the volley, the stability of the VCORE 89's low 12-ounce range of mass and that generous sweetspot made me feel quite comfortable, borderline imposing at net. I approached volleying from the service-T all the way to short half volleys close to the net with confidence."

Andy really enjoyed the feel at net but did not feel the racquet offered much forgiveness. He said, "Volleys felt nice, but this is where I felt the small head size the most. Again, it felt very solid when I made clean contact and it was very maneuverable. However, it was not forgiving on off-center hits, and it was a little difficult knifing the volley with lots of under-spin. When I made solid contact it felt great, but there's simply not very much space on the stringbed if the shot is not perfect. With that said, I know I'm being picky. It had tremendous feel and touch, and felt like a magic wand at net."

Serves - Score: 84

Control and precision were apparent on the serve for our whole team. Chris had all his different serves working with the VCORE Tour 89 . He said, "I really, really liked serving with this stick. It came through the contact zone exceptionally well. I like racquets that have heft but swing fast, and this racquet has that in spades. I was getting good pace on first serves. I was mixing in some slice and topspin when needed, as well as enjoying good targeting on flat deliveries. My second serves were kicking well with topspin. I liked the angle I was finding going wide to the ad side with topspin. On slice serves I found I could slide serves into the body as well as hit a kick slice wide to open up the court on the deuce side."

Getting the best of both worlds, with power and control, was Andy . He said, "Serves felt powerful and very accurate. The ball explodes off the stringbed, and I felt like I could put it on a dime! I was also able to generate great slice and kick. There was excellent power, excellent control and great access to spin!"

Troy loved the maneuverability and control he found when serving. He offered, "I found easy maneuverability with this racquet, which helped me get good pace and spin on my serves. I wasn't getting as much spin on my serves as the midplus version, but I could be more aggressive and aim closer to the lines. I felt like I could go for my first serves down the middle with confidence. My slice serve on the ad-side was cutting sharply out wide, and I was able to get some easy points with that shot, more than I did with the midplus. I was able to hit my targets more often with this stick than with the VCORE 97, which was a big plus for me."

It took Mark a little while to get used to this racquet, but once he did he felt the maneuverability and stability on his serve. He said, "It took a bit longer to adapt to serving well with the VCORE 89, but was very rewarding after making a small adjustment. The placement of the mass gave me plenty of stability, but it also gave me good maneuverability. Add in the smaller head size creating a wind cheating profile, and it was pretty easy to produce quite a bit of racquet head speed for the serve."

tour 89

Serve Returns - Score: 86

The maneuverability of the VCORE Tour 89 really stood out on the return of serve. Our playtesters felt confident went attacking the return, and also felt stability and control when just chipping it back. Andy was in love with this racquet on his returns. He said, "I loved this racquet on the return of serve (my favorite shot in tennis). It felt so maneuverable and had such great control, the two most important characteristics for me on the return of serve. The racquet was easy to whip around my body and had the perfect amount of control for redirecting a big first serve."

Chris also really enjoyed returning with this racquet. He said, "The fast yet solid feel was a huge plus on returns. I was attacking the ball well with this racquet. We strung up some low-powered co-polys in it during the test (such as Babolat RPM Blast), and I enjoyed being able to take a good cut at the ball with that kind of setup. I could get a lot of spin on my returns and that allowed me to hit aggressively whenever the opportunity presented itself."

Mark liked the precision he felt on his returns. He said, "I have a tendency to block back serves instead of using a topspin return, so the VCORE 89 was perfect for predictably keeping the return low."

Troy liked the depth and control he had on the return, but he wanted a little more forgiveness for taking big cuts at the ball. He said, "I liked that my returns were getting good depth and I could place the ball well within the court. The downside for me was that the relatively small sweetspot made it difficult for me to come up with returns on any serve that was outside my wheelhouse. With the midplus I had a little more forgiveness when stretched out, which was helpful in getting a deep return. With this 89 I could attack when the serve sat up for me, but on anything else my returns were usually falling short in the opponent's court. I did find some success on the backhand slice return, especially in doubles when I could come to net behind it. This is the one shot where I had a bit more success with the 97."

Overall - Score: 86

Chris - "Power, control, stability, maneuverability, touch/feel and spin! That pretty much covers everything I need."

Troy - "A very precise feeling racquet; much more feel than the 97. Not quite as pure feeling as the Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 85, but about as close as it gets."

Mark - "Yonex uses the method of a longer main string to create a more generous sweetspot, and I feel that they make some of the better mid-sized frames available. The VCORE 89 personifies my opinion about its mid-sized frames. The weight, balance, beam firmness, head size, pattern, paint scheme, etc., all suited me just fine. This racquet definitely makes me feel like I can play with smaller head sizes. It plays like it has a larger hoop size, but without the increased power level; just a sweeter sweetspot."

Andy - "I liked almost everything about this racquet! The weight, maneuverability, comfort, feel and control were awesome, and it felt so, so solid!"

Chris - "None."

Troy - "It has a slightly smaller sweetspot than I feel comfortable going to battle with. I currently use the Wilson BLX Six.One 95 (18x20), which gives me a little more forgiveness than this 89 sq. inch head size."

Mark - "Yet another high quality frame that I would seriously consider switching to, so none!"

Andy - "Two things: the head size is just slightly too small for me (though it does play a little larger than 89 square inches), and it was a little difficult to generate a lot of topspin."

Comparing the racquet to others they've tried, our testers said:

Chris - "I would definitely put this one in the camp of the more solid and crisp feeling Yonex mids. I used to use the buttery smooth RDX 500 Mid, but this one feels like it has more RDS 001 Mid in its heritage, as it is firmer and crisper. However, I thought comfort was vastly improved over recent Yonex mids, and that puts it midway between the softer Yonex racquets of old and the firmer playing recent versions for me. While it has a very different feel from my old Volkl Power Bridge 10 Mids, this racquet offers the same solid yet fast feel, as well as a forgiveness far beyond what its head size would suggest."

Troy - "The closest racquet to compare to this racquet would be the Pacific X Feel Pro 90 Vacuum, but the Pacific had a more flexible and dampened feel. The Wilson BLX Pro Staff Six.One 90 was a bit more comfortable for me overall due to the fact that it has a bit more lively response off the stringbed, which gave me a little more depth on my groundstrokes. Overall, this is a very solid player's frame, but not quite as effective for me as the Wilson BLX Six.One 95 (18x20) 2012, which is currently my go-to stick."

Mark - "As I mentioned above, the mid-sized frames from Yonex are among my favorites, and I feel similarly about the new VCORE 89/97 as I did about the older RDiS 100 mid/midplus. The midplus versions of those frames play much differently than the mids do. With the exception of the head sizes they were more alike than not on paper, but playing with them you can feel the contrast due to the head size difference. I would not really compare the VCORE 89 to the Wilson Tour 90, but I can seamlessly go back and forth from the Head Prestige Mid and the VCORE 89."

Andy - "This racquet is very similar to the rest of the Yonex mids that have been around for ages, especially my racquet of choice, the RDiS 100 Mid. It definitely feels smaller and less forgiving than the RDiS 100 Mid. It's stiffer, and I felt more control with the VCORE."

Yonex VCore Tour 89 Review

Yonex VCore Tour 89 tennis racquet

The Yonex VCore Tour 89 is the latest offering from Yonex. With a smaller head size (89 square inches) and 16 mains and 20 crosses, the Yonex VCore Tour 89 offers a lot for high level tennis players. Players like Caroline Wozniacki, Lleyton Hewitt, Bernard Tomic, and Stanislas Wawrinka all use Yonex VCore tennis racquets.

Yonex VCore Tour 89 playtest

The heavy frame of the Yonex VCore Tour 89 felt nicely balanced in my hands. Surely I could do some damage with the Yonex VCore Tour 89. The balance of the Yonex VCore Tour 89 favors a headlight balance, which I do prefer, though the stiffness of the frame was difficult to overcome. It turns out that I could not do very much with the Yonex VCore Tour 89, it was very difficult to hit with.

Yonex VCore Tour 89 tennis racquet 2012

I could not get over how stiff the frame felt when hitting with it. The Yonex VCore Tour 89 does not have an extraordinary stiffness rating, though it just felt really firm with very little bend in the frame. I could absolutely see this tennis racquet giving me arm trouble. Though, with a stiffer frame, you do get some more power, so it is a trade off. Of course, there are some good things about the VCore Tour 89; for example, this racquet is great when it comes to placement. The 20 crosses helped me move the ball around the tennis court with ease. Hitting hard passing attempts was also very nice, the stability of the Yonex VCore Tour 89 at net was spectacular. I was really able to go after volleys.

From the baseline though, the Yonex VCore Tour 89 was decent on flat groundstrokes; the racquet did lack spin. Because of the 20 crosses, I do believe Yonex has taken away the ability to put spin on the ball. However, that is my opinion. If you are looking for a tennis racquet that offers nice power and pinpoint accuracy, then the Yonex VCore Tour 89 is the tennis racquet for you.

Flashback: The Who Reunite In ’89, Seven Years After Saying ‘Farewell’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Most fans of the Who point to the band’s 1989 reunion tour as their absolute low point as a live act. Not only did Pete Townshend play acoustic guitar most of the night to protect his damaged hearing, but the five-man lineup of their 1982 farewell tour suddenly swelled to a whopping fifteen musicians all crammed together onstage. Roger Daltrey was also far from top form since he was experiencing severe stomach problems through most of the tour that eventually required surgery.

Where Do the Who Rank Among the 100 Greatest Artists?

Despite all the problems, bad haircuts and other poor decisions, the Who staged a marathon three-hour show every night that kicked off with a complete performance of Tommy followed by a mixture of hits, deep cuts and, in a move they’ve never done before or since, tracks from their solo careers. They even played unexpected covers like “ Hey Joe ” and “ Born On The Bayou .”

“Hey Joe” and More of Your Picks for Jimi Hendrix’s Best Songs

One of the motivations for the tour was John Entwistle’s desperate financial situation. He often said that being in the Who was like “winning the lottery, but not cashing in the ticket.” His income sank dramatically in the 1980s, even as he continued to live a lavish lifestyle on a castle-like estate.

Remembering the Epic Life of the Who’s John Entwistle

Entwistle’s songwriting skills were always overshadowed by the simple fact he was in a band with Pete Townshend, but the bassist was a very gifted writer who liked to draft songs about men with vices. “Whiskey Man” is about an alcoholic, “My Wife” is about a dodgy character whose wife (probably with good reason) suspects him of infidelity, and “Trick of the Light” is about a guy who hires a prostitute to gauge whether or not he’s skilled in bed. The man in “Boris The Spider” doesn’t seem to have any real vices, though his fixation on a spider that he eventually crushes is a little disturbing. (It’s no coincidence that Entwistle himself had issues with drugs, angry wives and women of ill-repute. It’s unclear what he thought about spiders.)

Meet the Singer Who Replaced Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington in Stone Temple Pilots

Jojo siwa promised them pop stardom. they say they were ‘thrown in the trash’, biden's meeting with muslim community leaders on gaza was disastrous, chappell roan lectured at harvard and kissed olivia rodrigo all in one day.

John Entwistle and More of Your Picks for the Best Bassists of All Time

One of the highlights of the Who’s 1989 tour was “Trick of the Light.” (Check out the video above from a show in Tacoma, Washington.) “This is a song about hookers, ladies of the night,” Entwistle told the crowd at the Tacoma Dome. “And the good they do for everyone in the world.” About an hour or so later, Pete Townshend slashed open his hand while windmilling during “ Won’t Get Fooled Again .” He rushed to the hospital for stitches, forcing the band to play the encores without him. Lucky for him, there were fourteen other people on stage more than capable of playing a couple songs without him.

It turned out to be less than halfway through the band’s enduring lifespan to date, but on August 24, 1989, as part of the 25 th anniversary tour by The Who , they played Tommy and much more at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.

The LA gig was a star-studded affair. The Who’s performance of Pete Townshend ’s rock opera featured guest appearances by Elton John (reprising his role in Ken Russell’s Tommy film as the Pinball Wizard), Phil Collins , Billy Idol, Steve Winwood , and Patti LaBelle, who played the Acid Queen. Robert Plant was billed to perform, but he pulled out of the LA show.

Ticket prices started at $75 and went all the way to $1,500, with proceeds going to charities for abused children and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band were coming towards the end of the massive reunion tour of 1989 by the time they got to California.

The itinerary began on June 21 in Glen Falls, New York, filling stadiums throughout North America until September 3. In October 1989, the tour finished with four shows in Birmingham, four at Wembley Arena and two closing nights at the Royal Albert Hall.

Pete solo and Who hits

After featuring the whole of the  Tommy  opus, the Universal Amphitheater gig followed the pattern of the North American tour with a second set of greatest hits, as well as three Townshend solo numbers, “Face The Face,” “Dig,” and “Rough Boys.” The band encored with two more enduring favourites, “Who Are You” and Eddie Cochran ‘s “Summertime Blues.”

Some songs from the Los Angeles show were included in the Join Together live album that followed the tour in the spring of 1990, which only nudged the bottom of the US chart at No.188 and the UK listings at No.59.

always loved this band since i was 12 years old just a pity the tickets are so expensive i cant afford it but all the best my favourite band of all time

I wasn’t allowed to see the Rich Stadium show that tour. And it hurt because I’d just fallen for Roger.

August 25, 2015 at 12:21 pm

This was my first Who show. My sister had a co-worker who got dibs on tickets at the venue, so he scored $150 seats and sold them to us for face value. The venue is small and intimate, only around 5,000 seats. Being toward the end of the tour, the band was well-oiled, though its size and the complexity of the song arrangements meant long free-form jams were impossible. It was essentially Pete’s Deep End band. In 2011, I met Roger in Austin for a Tommy show, and he told me that he “hated the marimba band” they had with them on this tour! That may be a little unkind, for at the time you could look past the big band and enjoy the the big three, who were clearly enjoying themselves as well. This still ranks among the best shows I’ve seen.

The giant saguaro cactus is the universal symbol of the American west and are found in a relatively small area in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. The park is divided in to two districts to the east and west of Tucson. Drive though the park at sunset to experience the beauty of the towering saguaros silhouetted against mountains rising above broad valleys.

The Teton Range rises nearly a mile above Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the valley below the eastern face of the mountains. A dozen of its peaks are over 12,000 in elevation and with no foothills to obscure the view they can be seen reflected in the large lakes at their base. There is no more spectacular and iconic view any where in the Rockies.

Grand Canyon National Park is really two parks in one. The North Rim which is nearly a thousand feet higher than the South Rim is only accessible in summer. Standing ten miles north of the Colorado River, the view from the rim is of long side canyons and the towering buttes they have carved. The South Rim stands a mile above the Colorado with vertigo-inducing views of the colorful rock layers that record a billion years of the Earth’s geological history.

Glacier National Park in Montana was established in 1910. In 1932 it was linked to Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park to form the world’s first International Peace Park. The parks are renowned for their glacier-carved mountains and deep lakes. Here at the narrowest point in the Rocky Mountains, ecosystems from the Pacific Northwest, the northern forests and the Great Plains converge to form a unique community of plants and animals found no where else in North America.

Despite the name, Utah’s Bryce Canyon is not a canyon but an amphitheater created by erosion on the eastern edge of a high plateau. The erosion of the soft rock has left a spectacular array of red, orange and white hoodoos below the rim of the plateau.

Carved by the North Fork of the Virgin River, Zion Canyon in Utah is fifteen miles long and up to a half mile deep. The bottom of the canyon is filled with stream-side vegetation and many hiking trails lead into side canyons with hanging gardens and waterfalls.

Yellowstone in Wyoming is America’s first national park and nowhere in the world is there a larger concentration of geothermal features. In addition to the geysers, hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles, the park abounds with wildlife including moose, elks, bison, bears and wolfs.

Adam Sandler seen slumped outside Claridge’s after bizarre London sightings

Adam Sandler had been spotted exploring London over the last few weeks in a number of unlikely scenes.

The Happy Gilmore actor, 57, enjoyed a spot of basketball at Kensington Leisure Centre last month, and he’s now been filmed playing the game – which he’s been known to be partial to – in Clapham, too.

He was also filmed rocking out to a Madison Beer concert at the Eventim Apollo.

Perhaps the most bizarre picture Londoners have grabbed of the star in recent weeks came today when one megafan spotted him chilling on the pavement outside of Claridges, flanked by two bodyguards. As you do.

He was pictured slumped on the pavement outside the Mayfair hotel wearing a North Face jacket by fan Corin Richards, 26, who works nearby.

Corin was ‘excited’ to see Adam as he’s a big fan – particularly of Happy Gilmore and Grown Ups.

Fans took to social media confused by the Hollywood A-lister and comedy legend’s mysteriously normal appearances around the capital, as @DnellyBPD wrote: ‘I keep seeing these why is he here? LOL can someone explain this is like this is the third or fourth video I’ve seen of Adam Sandler in a different area of London.’

Meanwhile, @StephanieYeboah said: ‘Adam Sandler currently completing random side quests on the London expansion pack. How random.’

Sharing a video of Adam playing basketball in Clapham on April 1 – which makes us think this whole thing is some sort of twisted, extended April Fool’s joke – X user @CakePint said: ‘Just walked past Adam Sandler playing basketball in Clapham.’

In the video, the Hollywood star can be seen walking around and defending the hoop with three other men. He was dressed in a baby blue hoodie and red tracksuit, sporting his usual casual attire.

One fellow Madison Beer fan captured the star clapping along to The Spinnin Tour concert wearing a purple hoodie and (a very similar but different) North Face jacket, and wrote: ‘Adam sandler attending the spinnin’ tour closing night in london wasn’t part of my bingo card 😭.’

A fellow concert-goer shared pictures and asked what the whole of London is thinking right now: ‘ADAM SANDLER WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?’

ADAM SANDLER WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? pic.twitter.com/jRODIVlnVd — brooke (@barbiebruises) April 3, 2024

Indeed, what on earth is he doing here?

We’re heard a few murmurs from Sandler of late, as it’s rumoured Happy Gilmore 2 is ‘in the works,’ and the actor has even written the first draft, according to Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald.

Last month, McDonald said during a radio interview  on Audacy’s 92.3: ‘I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, “McDonald, you’re gonna love this.”

‘I said, “What?” He says, “How about that,” and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.

‘Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, “Well, that would be awesome.” So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!’

While it doesn’t seem like Adam is filming his most beloved comedy Happy Gilmore in London any time soon, maybe he’s sending us signs via his basketball and concert antics.

His 1995 film Billy Madison – in which Adam plays a rich adult slacker who goes back to school – has somewhat tenuous links to his recent appearances.

In it, there’s an iconic scene where the titular character plays basketball with other kids, and singer Madison Beer’s name does echo the film’s. Perhaps he’s trying to tell us – very cryptically – about a sequel…

Adam’s most recent films include Netflix’s Spaceman, in which he plays Jakub Prochazka, and 2023’s animation Leo where he voices the titular character.

Whatever Adam has in store, we’re enjoying spotting him around London.

If you’ve seen him, please let us know…

‘Shrek’ and ‘500 Days Of Summer’ actor Jean-Paul Vignon dies aged 89

The French actor and vocalist died after battle with liver cancer

Jean-Paul Vignon

Jean-Paul Vignon, the French vocalist and actor, has died aged 89.

His family have confirmed that he passed away from liver cancer on March 22 in Beverly Hills.

With a career spanning eight decades, Vignon was best known for his voice acting and narration in some major films and television programmes.

Born on January 30 1935, Vignon began his career in France where he performed in a Parisian cabaret, and starred in French films such as Asphalte and Les Promesses Dangereuses .

He debuted in the US in 1963 when he opened for comic, actor and filmmaker Woody Allen , at The Blue Angel in New York.

Vignon went on to make multiple appearances on CBS variety shows in the US, where he also sang a duet with Liza Minnelli.

Jean-Paul Vignon

Later in his career, Vignon appeared on teen sitcom Gilmore Girls , hospital drama Days Of Our Lives and detective series The Rockford Files .

His voice can also be heard in 2001 Dreamworks animation, Shrek , as one of the Merrymen who live in Sherwood Forest and perform a song for the movie’s main characters.

He also features as a narrator in the 2009 romcom starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt , 500 Days Of Summer .

Alongside his impressive acting career, Vignon was known for being a successful singer. In a 1994 profile of him by the Los Angeles Times , he was described to have “fulfilled the American image of the romantic, singing Frenchman.”

The profile continued: “Ironically, rather than compare his voice to such renowned Gallic crooners as Maurice Chevalier and Gilbert Bécaud, Vignon says that he has a Bobby Darin kind of voice, able to sing fast and passionate or gentle and slow.”

In 1966, he married King Of Kings and How The West Was Won actor, Brigid Bazlen. The couple were married for two years, divorcing in 1968. Bazlen, who retired from acting in her late 20s, died from cancer in 1989 at the age of 44.

Vignon is survived by his longtime partner Suzie Summers, along with his daughters and granddaughters.

Jean-Paul Vignon , a French actor and vocalist who frequently lent his Gallic accent to Hollywood productions, died of liver cancer on March 22 in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 89.

Among his notable work, Vignon lent his voice to Marc Webb’s romantic comedy “(500) Days of Summer” as the French narrator. His voice appears when the lovelorn Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) goes to the movies by himself after Summer (Zoey Descanel) breaks up with him, only to fall asleep and dream of a black-and-white French film that speaks to his “suffering.”

Among his other acting credits, Vignon also appeared as Andre in “Gilmore Girls” and as Monsieur Lazare in “Days of Our Lives.”

Vignon began his artistic career as a musician in France. He performed as part of a cabaret in Paris and in the 1950s starred in the French films “Les Promesses Dangereuses” and “Asphalte.” He was signed as a vocalist to the French imprint Disques Vogue. He recorded the autobiographical song “Djibouti” and at one point opened for Edith Piaf.

Vignon soon took his talents to the United States. He made multiple appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing a duet with Liza Minnelli on one of those occasions. He was also a regular guest on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” as well as Merv Griffin’s daytime show. Among his endeavors in music and acting, Vignon went on to release his U.S. album “Because I Love You” and played a supporting role in the World War II film “The Devil’s Brigade.” He also hosted the Canadian show “The Sensuous Man,” produced by Dick Clark.

Vignon was born on Jan. 30, 1935, in the port city of Dire-Daoua and was raised in Avignon, France. He is survived by Suzie Summers, his longtime partner; his daughter Marguerite Vignon Gaul and granddaughters Leah and Hannah from his marriage to the late actress Brigid Bazlen; and his daughter Lucy Brank.
