I’ve visited Cologne (and the Rhine/Moselle area) several times and even spent a couple months living just outside of Cologne and also in a smaller town in the region. It’s a beautiful area!

Where to Stay in Cologne

hotel room

You’ll find a wide variety of accommodation options in Cologne, including hotels, B&Bs, and apartments. If you’re only in Cologne for a couple days, I recommend a hotel in downtown near the cathedral so that you can easily walk to sights, shopping, restaurants, and the Rhine river. You can also easily catch public transportation to other parts of the city from this area.

READ our Cologne (Köln) hotel guide!

Where We Stayed in Cologne

On our most recent trip to Cologne, we stayed at the wonderful Konzept Hotel zum kostbaren Blut . This hotel prioritizes sustainability and is in a converted convent above the historic square of Alter Markt.

It has a slightly funky retro vibe but is equipped with all your standard, modern amenities. It’s location is perfect, since it’s only a short walk from the train station, Cathedral, Altstadt, the Christmas markets, and Rhine river. It’s also well-connected to public transport.

Our room was light, airy, and spotless, the bed was super comfortable, and we had a great view of the Cologne Cathedral from our room and balcony. It’s also reasonably priced and there are lots of options for food and drink nearby. Highly recommended!

If you’re looking for an apartment in Cologne, do a search on Booking.com . We’ve found several great apartments there (less than what we saw on Airbnb for the same apartment) and it’s SO nice to have all hotel and apartment reservations in one place.

Tip: if you have our Germany Travel Planner you’ll find recommended hotels on our interactive planning map. Seeing where these hotels are in relation to the top sights makes it a lot easier to find the perfect place to stay. If you don’t yet have it, click here to get access.

Book your Cologne accommodations in advance! They tend to fill quickly during peak travel times (summer, Christmas, etc) so I recommend seeing what’s open for your travel dates .

Cologne Travel FAQ

Where is cologne located.

Cologne ( Köln in German) is located in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia), just south of Düsseldorf and north of Frankfurt.

map of Germany highlighting Cologne (Köln)

What is Cologne, Germany Famous For?

Cologne has a famous cathedral right across from the main train station, the Rhine river that flows right through the city, and Kölsch beer, to name a few.

Is Cologne, Germany Worth Visiting?

It really depends on how much time you have in Germany, how close you’ll be to Cologne, and what you most want to do and see. If you’ve always wanted to see the cathedral and you’ll be within a couple hours of Cologne, it’s worth a day or overnight trip. If you’re only planning to be in Berlin or Munich, however, going all the way to Cologne might not be worth it.

Getting to Cologne

Cologne is easy to reach via train, bus, car or plane. If arriving from the US, consider flying into Düsseldorf International Airport as an alternative to Frankfurt. You can take public transportation to Cologne (it takes about an hour) or arrange an  easy airport transfer here ahead of time and a driver will pick you up at the airport and drive you right to your hotel or apartment.

If you’re arriving via train or bus, you’ll arrive at the central train station downtown (Hauptbahnhof). From there you can walk to many downtown hotels ( check out our Cologne hotel guide here ) and tourist sights, take public transportation or grab a taxi.

Getting Around Cologn e

The city center is very walkable and you should be able to easily walk to many hotels and tourist sites. For the ones that are further away you can hop on a tram, bus, U-bahn or S-bahn. There’s also a HOHO (Hop On Hop Off) bus and a Bimmelbahn train for visitors.

Cologne CityTour

Cologne is a diverse city full of surprises (Photo: getyourguide.com)

With the likes of Berlin and Munich hogging the limelight when it comes to holidaying in Germany, Cologne might seem like an unlikely choice. But the 2,000-year-old German city is not only steeped in history and culture, it is also extremely good fun, with both a great Brauhaus culture (there are more pubs and taverns per capita than any other major city in Germany apparently) and also a week-long street carnival known as the ‘Crazy Days’. Then there are the chocolates, sports, art galleries and incredible architecture gems, all combining to make it an enthralling, lesser-known European destination. To get around we’ve found the seven best tours to take in Cologne:

Cologne City Tour Experience

Kicking off with a classic, this two-hour tour mixes the must-sess such as Cologne Cathedral, Hohenzollern Bridge and the Old Town, as well as finding out hidden details about lesser-explored sights such as St. Maria Himmelfahrt, Cologne Central Station and the modern tower block Kölntriangle. The guides are knowledgeable but it never gets too weighed down with facts and history, with lighthearted touches and the odd joke thrown in. There are also useful tips on how to spend the rest of your time in the city. As a well-rounded and compact tour of Cologne, this is hard to beat. From €29.00 .

Old Town Brewhouse Tour

tour a cologne

Kölsch is a typical beer of Cologne (Photo: getyourguide.com)

Navigating the warren of streets in Cologne’s Old Town looking for a Brauhaus can be exhausting – there are dozens to choose from. For less than €20 a local guide will lead you away from the usual tourist hotspots, visiting four handpicked establishments where you can try Kölsch, the local beer of the city. Facts about Cologne’s beer culture, which dates back more than 500 years, as well as personal anecdotes, will be shared during the two-hour tour. Anyone who prefers to chuck themselves into local culture, phrasebook in hand, might find this all a bit distracting from the serious business of quaffing beer, but for anyone who wants more of a hassle-free night out, it should tickle the tastebuds. From €19.

Book at getyourguide.com

Cologne: Street Art Walking Tour of Ehrenfeld District

Let’s face it, Cologne does gothic cathedrals and cosy old taverns pretty well, but what about modern Cologne, I hear you say. Ehrenfeld District, a 40-minute walk from the centre in the city’s northwest, is where the barristas lurk and the kombucha slowly ferments, and as such, is a great place to see amazing street art. This tour takes in works by artists such as ROA, Herakut, Faith47, INTI, Tika, and M-City and explains some of the more poignant messages behind them. Just 1.5 hours, it’s not that long – and at nearly €100 pretty expensive – so really only one for real street art buffs. From € 94.14.

Cologne: The Melaten Cemetery, Life, Love and Death Tour

tour a cologne

The Melaten Cemetry is a good place to understand Cologne’s long history (Photo: getyourguide.com)

Walking around a graveyard might not sound like fun but Cologne’s Melatenfriedhof (Melaten Cemetery) is a fascinating way to understand the long history of the city. With 55,000 ‘inhabitants’, its resting places reflect Cologne’s architectural styles, from Neoclassicism to neo-Gothic, neo-Baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism, and feature famous residents including Dirk Bach, Willi Herren and Sophia Czory. The most surprising thing about this tour, which retells tales of the celebrities buried here and the art, culture and history surrounding them, is how tranquil it is compared to bowling around a city centre. The site of a former leper colony, Melaten Cemetery now doubles up as a beautiful park shaded by plane trees, maples and birch, right in the middle of Cologne. From €12.50.

The 10 Tastings of Cologne

What better combination than plentiful food and drinks during a walking tour to burn it all off? This tour does what it says on the tin, sampling the tastiest offerings of Cologne, from local cheeses and chocolate to currywurst – this is milder than the Berlin version and comes with creme – and Kölsch beer. It’s a really informative tour that also includes some history of the city, as well as top tips on secret eateries and bars, so works as a great catch-all for anyone wanting to do just one tour of Cologne. 10 food and drink tastings are included in the price. From €89.71.

Book at withlocals.com

Compact Tour

If the thought of wandering around a city at a snail’s pase, while Sidney takes his 85th selfie, has you twiddling your thumbs, this tour is something completely different. It’s a running tour, that is: you run behind your guide. The good news is it ticks off that bit of exercise normally skipped during a weekend away and covers a lot of ground – in this case 7km – in around an hour and a half. Admittedly this is probably more for people who find holidays a tedious interruption to their fitness regime, but it’s a novel way to meet likeminded sporty types as you fly round Cologne’s sights, including Cologne Cathedral, Heinzelmaennchenbrunnen fountain, and perfume boutique 4711 Eau de Cologne. From €65.00.

Private Rickshaw Tour

tour a cologne

A rickshaw takes the stress out of sightseeing (Photo: getyourguide.com)

At the opposite end of the scale to legging it around the city (and a bit cheaper than the running tour too) this rickshaw ride lets someone else do the sweating. It’s eco-friendly and carbon neutral too, trundling between the city highlights like Heinzelmännchenbrunnen, Dionysos Mosaic, Hohenzollernbreach, and the Cologne Cathedral. The cool thing is you can let your driver know beforehand where you want to go and the tour is tailored to your needs, dropping you off in a place of your choice to walk back (or take public transport) at your leisure. Hot drinks, binoculars and blankets are all thrown in too, making this one of the most decadent and relaxing ways to enjoy Cologne. From €46 per person.

The interiors of the church prove to be a bit different from its Romanesque exterior with its high cross tower. Its neutral-toned minimalistic appearance with a few stained glass windows at the top, adds a beautiful and often unique touch to a church of its kind.  You can also visit downstairs into the basement to see remnants of the old chapel!

Don’t have time to go inside? Book a city tour in Cologne and get a crash course on the church when you stop by it, and learn about its beautiful facade and historical significance.

My Vacation Itineraries

Turn your dream vacation into reality

one day in cologne

One Day in Cologne (Itinerary + Rhine River Cruise)

  • April 18, 2024

A complete itinerary for one day in Cologne (+ a map with all must-see attractions, where to try the famous Kölsch beer and the best castles to visit near Cologne).

Cologne, also known as Köln in German, is the largest city in the North Rhine-Westphalia region. The city is famous for its iconic Gothic cathedral, known as the Kölner Dom, and its lively beer culture featuring the local brew, Kölsch. There’s also a chocolate museum where you can discover the history of chocolate and enjoy tasty samples!

Founded by the ancient Romans, Cologne boasts a history spanning over 2000 years. During the Middle Ages, the city became one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire. It was a major centre of trade and commerce, due to its strategic location on the Rhine River. Today, Cologne is a modern and vibrant city that has something for everyone, whether you’re into history, art, food or nightlife.

Best 1-day Cologne Itinerary

With its key landmarks, all conveniently located in Altstadt (Old Town), exploring Cologne in a day is entirely feasible. Yet, there are plenty of attractions near the city worth exploring, such as the imperial city of Aachen, the magnificent Drachenburg Castle, and the beautiful Augustusburg Palace. Thus, if possible, I’d recommend spending more than a day in Cologne!

This itinerary for one day in Cologne covers all popular attractions, including the iconic cathedral, the Chocolate Museum and where to find the best Kölsch beer in the city. You’ll also find several recommendations for one-day trips from Cologne, including the best nearby castles and cities to visit.

One Day in Cologne Itinerary (for first-timers)

Breakfast at bakery merzenich.

  • Visit the famous Cologne Cathedral
  • Enjoy the views of Hohenzollern Bridge
  • House of Fragrances 4711 and its iconic Eau de Cologne

Lunch at Café Chocolate

  • Visit the Imhoff Chocolate Museum
  • Taste the local beer Kölsch at Peters Brauhaus

In my experience, you’ll need at least one full day to explore Cologne and enjoy the city without feeling rushed. Yet, if you’re visiting in December during the famous Christmas market, I suggest extending your stay by at least another day. There are several big Christmas markets to discover! Right after this 1-day itinerary, you’ll find recommendations on how to see the city for 2 and 3 days in case you have extra time to spare.

Tips on your 1-day Cologne itinerary

Accommodation – have you already secured your hotel? Ensure it’s conveniently located by checking my guide on where to stay in Cologne .

My favourite place to stay in Cologne : Legend Hotel Why : ideal central location, just a short stroll away from Cologne Cathedral and train station What I like : rooftop bar with cathedral view, fantastic restaurant

Sightseeing – I suggest visiting the Cologne Cathedral first thing in the morning since it’s the most popular attraction and tends to get crowded later in the day.

Map – find here a map of this 1-day itinerary for Cologne (with all attractions and restaurants’ websites).

One Day in Cologne Itinerary

08:30 AM – 09:30 AM

Start your one day in Cologne with breakfast at Bakery Merzenich on Wallrafplatz. This famous bakery is located right beside the iconic cathedral, Kölner Dom. They offer a large range of good sweet and savoury pastries, perfect for a quick breakfast. Try any of their classics like the nougat pretzel, Bee Sting (cake with vanilla pudding cream) or Kölner Röggelchen (sandwich with Gouda and mustard). My personal favourites are the crispy nougat pretzel and the cheese pretzel.

Cologne Cathedral

09:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is not only the city’s most iconic landmark but also a symbol of the city itself. It has survived wars and conflicts over the centuries and remains a symbol of Cologne’s resilience and heritage.

The construction of Kölner Dom began in 1248, but it wasn’t completed until 1880, spanning over six centuries. It was built to house the relics of the Three Kings (Magi), making it an important pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. The cathedral’s stunning facade features intricate stone carvings, spires, and flying buttresses. Its twin towers stand at around 157 meters (515 feet) tall, making them visible from many parts of the city.

There are free organ concerts in the cathedral during the summer period. The concerts are held every Tuesday at 09:00 PM (see all available concerts here ).

It is possible to climb the narrow staircase (533 steps) to the top of the south tower for panoramic views of the city and the Rhine River. Along the way, you’ll see the eight bells of the cathedral, including the massive 24-ton St. Peter’s Bell (Petersglocke). The entrance to the tower is outside the cathedral, on the right side of the main entrance.

There is no possibility to reserve your tickets in advance Entry ticket : free for the cathedral , €7 – Cathedral Treasury, €6 – to climb the south tower (no lift)

I’ve travelled a lot, but the Cologne Cathedral is one of the most impressive cathedrals I’ve ever seen. I strongly suggest taking the time to explore its stunning interior.

cologne cathedral

The Cathedral Treasury is located outside of the cathedral, on the left side of the main entrance. It houses a rich collection of church relics dating from the Middle Ages. The treasury keeps the Shrine of the Three Kings, a golden sarcophagus that holds the crowned skulls and clothes of the Three Wise Men. The relic was taken from Milan by Holy Roman Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa and given to the Archbishop of Köln, Rainald von Dassel in 1164. Another notable treasure is the Gero Cross (Gero Kreuz), carved in 976, making it the oldest crucifix north of the Alps that has survived to this day.

Hohenzollern Bridge

10:30 AM – 11:00 AM

For the most iconic views of the cathedral, head to Hohenzollern Bridge. Built in the early 20th century, this bridge links the cathedral on the west side of the Rhine River with Rheinboulevard on the east side.

House of Fragrances 4711

11:15 AM – 11:45 AM

House of Fragrances 4711 is the birthplace of the famous Eau de Cologne and modern perfume. Wilhelm Mülhens founded the factory in 1792 on Cologne’s Glockengasse street, where today you’ll find the flagship store.

The most famous product of 4711 is its signature fragrance, also known as Eau de Cologne (meaning water from Cologne). Created by Italian perfumer Johann Maria Farina, it features citrus scents such as lemon, orange, bergamot, and neroli. The name 4711 comes from the factory’s house number, which was assigned during the French occupation in the 19th century.

Don’t miss the fragrance fountain, filled with the original Eau de Cologne! Find out more about the history of this famous fragrance, by taking this guided tour of House of Fragrances 4711 (every Saturday at 1 PM).

12:00 PM – 01:50 PM

For lunch make your way to Café Chocolate , the best place for brunch in Cologne in my opinion. I tasted the Avocado Bread with poached egg and the Tomato Mozzarella Bread, both were fantastic. However, the highlight was the Crowaffel – a waffle made with croissant dough. The Pistachio Crowaffel was absolutely delicious!

If you’re craving a second dessert (and who doesn’t), head to Ice Cream United . Their ice cream is made fresh on-site, and it has a smooth and creamy texture. I like the pistachio and hazelnut flavours the most.

Imhoff Chocolate Museum

02:00 PM – 04:00 PM

Situated on the banks of the Rhine River, Imhoff Chocolate Museum is the most popular museum in Cologne. It was founded in 1993 by Hans Imhoff, a well-known German chocolate manufacturer. The Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum is dedicated to the history, production, and cultural significance of chocolate.

The highlights of the museum are the small Tropicarium with cacao trees and the 3-meter-tall chocolate fountain. And the best part is that you can sample the chocolate from the fountain on a wafer!

Make sure to visit the museum’s gift shop, which offers a wide selection of chocolates. It’s a must-visit for me whenever I’m in Cologne.

Booking in advance is recommended (tickets are timed-entry and lines are usually long) Entry ticket : Skip-the-line Chocolate Museum (free cancellation up to 24 hours)

Dinner at Peters Brauhaus

Finish this 1 day in Cologne with a dinner at Peters Brauhaus . This popular restaurant serves traditional German cuisine. I especially enjoyed the Brodwoosch mit Kartoffelsalat (sausage with potato salad) and the Apfelstrudel mit Vanilleeiscreme.

peters brauhaus sausage

Another option for dinner is Gilden im Zims , known for serving the best pork knuckles in the city.

Certainly, dinner wouldn’t be complete without tasting the famous local beer Kölsch. This light, pale yellow beer with subtle fruity notes, is typically served in slender 0.2L glasses. The person who serves you the Kölsch beer is called Köbes. The Köbes will automatically bring you a fresh glass of this excellent ale whenever your current one is finished, without requesting it. To decline further servings, simply place the beer coaster atop your glass. To help you keep count, the waiter will mark each beer consumed with a line on your coaster.

Both Peters Brauhaus and Gilden im Zims serve excellent Kölsch beer. Yet, for an exceptional Kölsch beer head to Brauhaus Em Kölsche Boor . Founded in 1760, it is one of the oldest breweries in Cologne.

The viewing platform is open daily from 11 AM to 8 PM.

Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud

Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud is a must for art enthusiasts. Founded in 1861, the museum is named after two noble citizens of Cologne – Franz Ferdinand Wallraf and Johann Heinrich Richartz. Wallraf bequeathed his extensive collection of paintings and coins to the city upon his death, while Richartz generously funded the construction of the museum.

Wallraf-Richartz-Museum showcases masterpieces from the medieval era to the early 20th century. It features some of my favourite artists like Van Gogh, Cézanne, Renoir, Monet, Manet, and Caspar David Friedrich. Be sure to visit the medieval art section, which I found surprisingly interesting despite not being a huge fan of this genre.

wallraf-richartz-museum

Museum Ludwig

Museum Ludwig is another popular art museum. Its primary focus is on modern art, particularly contemporary works from the 20th and 21st centuries. It all began in 1976 when Peter and Irene Ludwig donated 350 works of modern art to the city of Cologne. As a tribute to their contribution, the museum was named Museum Ludwig.

Today, Museum Ludwig boats artworks from different styles like Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and German Expressionism. It’s famous for its extensive collections of works by artists like Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Gerhard Richter. In fact, Museum Ludwig holds one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe.

Roman-Germanic Museum

This archaeological museum displays artefacts from the Roman settlement of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, which later became the city of Cologne. It was built in 1974 on the site of an urban Roman villa, whose remains you can still see in the basement. The museum houses an extensive collection of objects from the Paleolithic period to the early Middle Ages. One of its most famous exhibits is the Dionysus Mosaic, a remarkably well-preserved floor mosaic dating from the 2nd century AD.

Documentation Centre for the National Socialism

If you’re interested in World War II, a visit to the EL-DE Haus (NS-Dokumentationszentrum) is a must. The EL-DE Haus is named after its owner – the wholesaler Leopold Dahmen. The building served as the headquarters of the Secret State Police (Gestapo) from December 1935 until March 1945. In its basement cells, the Gestapo detained and interrogated individuals deemed enemies of the Nazi regime, often subjecting them to torture.

Today the building is both a museum and a memorial to the victims of the Nazi regime. If you want to learn more about World War II, get the audio guide. Keep in mind, that it runs for more than 3 hours, so focus on the parts that interest you the most.

Cologne City Hall

Cologne City Hall (Rathaus in German) is the oldest city hall in Germany with a history of over 800 years. Its oldest section still standing today dates back to 1330. So, make sure to stop for a moment and admire its Renaissance arcade and the 15th-century Gothic tower.

Great St. Martin Church

Great St. Martin Church (Gross Sankt Martin) is one of Cologne’s twelve Romanesque churches. It towers above the quaint, colourful houses at Fischmarkt Square. The church’s roots trace back to a Roman chapel from the 10th century, whose remnants you can still in the crypt. In ancient Roman times, the site where the church now stands was a separate Rhine island, hosting a storehouse. Over time, this island merged with the mainland, ceasing to exist.

The construction of the Great St. Martin Church began in 1150 and lasted until 1250. It is the city’s most beautiful Romanesque church, so make sure to include it on your Cologne itinerary when you visit.

Zoological Garden

Founded in 1860, the Zoological Garden (Kölner Zoo) is one of the oldest zoos in Germany. It is home to over 10,000 animals from around the world. Some of the highlights include an elephant park and a rainforest hall with a tropical climate, palms and free-roaming birds.

You can buy your Zoological Garden ticket here . Don’t forget to check the feeding times in advance to get the most out of your visit.

Cologne Christmas Market

If you’re in Cologne during December, make sure you don’t miss its famous Christmas market. The city hosts one of the most popular Christmas markets in Germany. In fact, there are 8 themed markets, located throughout the Old Town.

Find all you need to know in my in-depth guide to the Cologne Christmas Market .

2-day Cologne itinerary

If you have 2 days to spend in Cologne, I suggest following my itinerary for the first day and taking a day trip to Aachen on the second day. Aachen is one of the most charming historic cities near Cologne. However, if you’re here in December, I suggest using the second day to explore Cologne’s Christmas markets (there are 8 large markets).

2 days in Cologne

  • Day 1: Cologne Cathedral, Hohenzollern Bridge, House of Fragrances 4711, Imhoff Chocolate Museum
  • Day 2: Cologne Christmas market (winter) or day trip to Aachen (summer)

3-day Cologne itinerary

If you’re planning to spend 3 days in Cologne, simply follow the suggested two-day itinerary outlined above for the initial two days. Then, on the third day, opt for a Rhine River cruise through the picturesque Siebengebirge mountains or a day trip to Drachenburg Castle or Augustusburg Palace.

3 days in Cologne

  • Day 3: take a Rhine River cruise or day trip to Drachenburg Castle (or Augustusburg Palace)

Best pass for your 1-day Cologne itinerary

I highly recommend getting the KölnCard if you want to save money. It costs only €9 for 1 day (€18 for 2 days) and includes:

  • free access to public transport for 24/48 hours (single ride ticket is €3)
  • 24% discount at the Chocolate Museum
  • 15% discount at the shop and restaurant at Hard Rock Cafe Köln
  • 10% discount for purchases at House of Fragrances 4711
  • up to 50% discounts off many museums, restaurants and shops

So, by using public transportation twice and visiting the Chocolate Museum, you’re already making savings.

If you’re planning to visit several museums, I’d recommend getting the Museum Card . It costs €20 for two days and gives you free admission to all municipal museums. In addition, you can use the public transport system for free within the city (only on the first day).

Where to stay in Cologne

The best place to stay in Cologne is Altstadt (Old Town). This is the historic part of the city, where you’ll find all the famous attractions, including the iconic cathedral, Museum Ludwig and the Town Hall. Also, the train station is a short stroll away, making it convenient for connections to Cologne Bonn Airport.

I suggest booking a hotel in the area between Kölner Dom and Alter Markt. This way, you’ll be close to everything and within walking distance of attractions and restaurants.

CityClass Hotel Alter Markt – Best mid-range

Guest rating: 8.5 | 3,900+ reviews

Located at the main square in the Old Town, Alter Markt, this hotel is only a 5-minute stroll from the cathedral and the train station. Its prime location means you can easily reach all the main attractions, restaurants, and the Rhine River on foot. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and some even offer stunning views of Kölner Dom.

Why book – 5min walk to the cathedral, modern rooms with city views, great breakfast

Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom – Best luxury

Guest rating: 8.9 | 1,010+ reviews

Located directly opposite the cathedral, Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom is a historic hotel, family-owned since 1863. At Taku, a Michelin-starred restaurant, you can sample exotic Asian dishes, while Hanse Stube serves French gourmet cuisine. Additionally, you can treat yourself to delicious pastries and afternoon tea at the Wintergarten, or enjoy live music at the Piano Bar.

Why book – 2min walk to the cathedral and the train station, Michelin-star Asian restaurant, great Spa centre

Getting around in Cologne

The easiest way to get around Cologne is by using the tram and metro (U-Bahn). The city has an extensive network of trams, operated by KVB (Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe). The U-Bahn lines complement the tram network, offering fast transportation across the city, even to suburban areas. Find out more on the official website of KVB .

Although Cologne is one of the largest cities in Germany, its Old Town (Altstadt), where you’ll find all the tourist attractions is small. You can easily explore it on foot without needing any public transportation. If you’re not up for walking, I recommend taking the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus , which stops at all must-see attractions.

How to get to Cologne

The closest airport is Cologne-Bonn Airport, located about 15 kilometres from Cologne’ city centre. The easiest way to reach the city centre from the airport is by taking the train , which departs directly from the airport and stops at Köln Hauptbahnhof.

Cologne is served by the S-Bahn (suburban railway) and Regionalbahn (regional train) networks, operated by Deutsche Bahn (German Rail). These trains connect Cologne with nearby cities and towns, making it easy to travel within the region. Check timetables and book tickets online at Deutsche Bahn official site .

The city’s main train stations are Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station) and Köln Messe/Deutz (Cologne Trade Fair/Deutz Station). Köln Hauptbahnhof is nearer to the Old Town, just a brief 5-minute walk away, making it more convenient.

Cologne has a Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone) in the city centre, where only vehicles meeting certain emissions standards are allowed to enter. In addition, on-street parking in the city centre is limited and subject to time restrictions and fees. However, Cologne has numerous parking garages (Parkhäuser) , located in and around the city centre. If you prefer not to drive in the city centre, consider using Park & Ride facilities on the outskirts.

Best one-day trips from Cologne

Siebengebirge cruise.

The Siebengebirge Cruise is the most popular day cruise from Cologne. You’ll journey upstream on the Rhine, heading towards the scenic Siebengebirge mountains. Located on the eastern bank of the Rhine, the Siebengebirge mountains are known for their natural beauty and rock formations.

The cruise takes you along Bonn and the famous Drachenfels (Dragon’s Rock), crowned with the ruins of a medieval castle. Legend has it that the hill was once home to a dragon slain by the hero Siegfried.

aachen

Located 1 hour away by train, Aachen is my favourite one-day trip from Cologne. Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, made Aachen his imperial capital during the late 8th and early 9th centuries. The city served as the principal coronation site for German kings for nearly six centuries.

Some of the most famous landmarks are the Aachen Cathedral and its stunning Palatine Chapel, the beautiful Town Hall and the Couven Museum. Make sure to check out Nobis Printen e.K., known for selling the finest gingerbread in town!

How to get to Aachen Take a train from the Central Railway Station to Aachen Hbf (about a 50-minute journey).

koblenz deutsches eck

Koblenz is strategically positioned at the confluence of two major rivers, the Rhine and the Moselle. Founded by the Romans around 8 BC, the city has a rich history, dating back over 2,000 years.

One of the most iconic sights is the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), the place where the Rhine meets the Moselle River. From there you can take the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved fortresses.

I highly recommend stopping at Ulrikes Culture Bakery for breakfast and at eGeLoSIa Laden (the best gelato in the city). I particularly enjoyed the pistachio and forest fruit flavours.

koblenz ehrenbreitstein fortress

How to get to Koblenz Take a train from the Central Railway Station to Koblenz Hbf (about a 1-hour journey).

Augustusburg Palace

bruhl augustusburg palace

Augustusburg Palace, located in Brühl near Cologne, is one of the finest examples of Rococo architecture in Germany. It was built in the 18th century by Archbishop-Elector Clemens August of Bavaria. The palace served as a residence for the archbishops of Cologne and their guests.

Augustusburg Palace is surrounded by an extensive park, designed in the style of English gardens. In the park, you’ll find the Falkenlust Hunting Lodge, where Clemens August, Prince-Elector of Cologne, practised his favourite sport, falconry.

You can explore the Augustusburg Palace only with a guided tour, but you’re free to visit the Falkenlust Hunting Lodge on your own.

How to get to Augustusburg Palace Take a train from the Central Railway Station to Brühl Station (15 min journey). The property is less than a 5-minute walk from the train station.

Drachenburg Castle

Standing atop the Drachenfels hill, near the town of Königswinter, Drachenburg Castle offers stunning panoramic views of the Rhine River. The castle is a prime example of 19th-century historicism, featuring a fairytale-like appearance with turrets and spires. In my view, Drachenburg Castle is one of the most magical castles near Cologne. Baron Stephan von Sarter, a wealthy banker, commissioned the castle in the late 19th century.

Today, you can tour the castle and its opulent rooms (don’t forget to take the audioguide for extra insights).

How to get to Drachenburg Castle Take a train from Cologne Central Railway Station to Königswinter (a 40min journey). From there it’s about 30min walk to the castle. Another option is to take the historical rack railway Drachenfelsbahn from the train station to the castle.

What to see next

The Rhine River Valley isn’t just known for its picturesque vineyards but it’s also home to numerous castles. Some lie in ruins, while others have been transformed into museums or hotels. Find out more in my complete guide to the most popular castles on the Rhine .

Best time to visit Cologne

For pleasant weather, visit Cologne from May to September. It’s also the perfect time to enjoy the popular beer gardens. In February, Cologne hosts its famous Carnival, one of Germany’s largest and oldest celebrations. December is also a busy season due to the city’s celebrated Christmas market, which is one of the best in Europe.

Faqs about visiting Cologne

One day in Cologne is enough to explore the Old Town, see the iconic Cologne Cathedral and visit the Chocolate Museum. However, if you’re visiting during the Christmas season, plan for extra time as the city hosts several large Christmas markets.

One day is sufficient to see the city’s most popular attractions, including Altstadt, the iconic cathedral, Chocolate Museum and enjoy the famous local Kölsch beer.

Begin by visiting Cologne Cathedral, the city’s most popular attraction, then make your way to Hohenzollern Bridge for stunning city views. Next, discover the history of chocolate at Imhoff Chocolate Museum. Finish the day with a glass of the famous local beer Kölsch at Peters Brauhaus.

Planning the perfect 1 or 2 days in Cologne itinerary can be a bit difficult when you consider al there is to do in this lovely city. Situated in western Germany you’ll find Cologne. Pronounced “Köln” in German, this charming city is a lesser-visited destination for tourists.

Most visitors to Germany flock to Munich or Berlin , leaving Cologne as a great destination for anyone wanting the history, food, and culture that Germany is famous for while avoiding the pressing crowds of larger cities.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Cologne?

If you just want to visit the highlights or have a limited amount of time in Germany, one day in Cologne will be enough to get a good sense of what the city has to offer. You can explore the riverfront, walk through the Old Town, and visit the famous Cologne Cathedral all within a few hours.

If you want to dive deeper into the city’s history and culture, 2 days are great too. More than one day will allow you more time to take in the city at your own pace. You can spread out your visits to museums and even have some free time to relax in local parks or along the River Rhine and get a bit outside the tourist center of Cologne.

Cologne is a city that is very worth exploring on foot. When deciding how many days to spend in Cologne, take a look at everything there is to do then choose what you’re most interested in. Without a doubt, you’ll come away with an itinerary that suits your traveling goals.

Cologne skyline

Getting To & Around Cologne

There are two main ways you’ll arrive in Cologne: by train or plane. If you’re flying into the city, you’ll land at the Cologne Bonn Airport. From there you can take a taxi, private transfer , rideshare, or train.

There is a train station at the airport that takes visitors directly to the city center for less than five euros, but this transport is free if you have the KolnCard . The ride from the airport to the city is 10 to 15 minutes.

If you’re arriving by train (you can view train schedules here ), you will exit the train station in the center of the city. From here, you can either walk or call a taxi to reach your accommodation.

Cologne is a very walkable city. If you only have 1 day, you likely won’t even need to use the public transit system. Most of the main highlights are centrally located and walking between them also gives you more opportunity to experience as much of the city as possible if you’re trying to see Cologne in 1 day without haveing to hop on a tram or bus.

Should you plan to see Cologne in 2 days, and want to use public transit, consider getting the 24 or 48 hours KolnCard. This grants its holders free tickets on public transport throughout the city, including to and from the airport.

1 to 2-Day Cologne Itinerary

No matter how long you have to spend in Cologne, here’s what you should try to see to make your trip memorable.

Day 1 – Cologne Cathedral, Museum Ludwig, Old Market & More

Visit the cologne cathedral.

When you arrive for your first day in Cologne, you’ll quickly notice a towering Gothic cathedral that dominates the skyline. This is the Cologne Cathedral, and the first place you should visit while exploring the city.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, construction on the cathedral began in 1248. It was completed in several disparate stages, so it wasn’t complete until 1880.

This intricately-designed Gothic cathedral is as impressive inside as it is outside. Enter the cathedral to take in the historic stained glass windows and tall arches that make up the main hall.

The Cologne Cathedral is open for tourists and free to visit. Make sure to check the cathedral’s website prior to visiting as special events and masses can change when the cathedral is open to visitors.

To learn more about the history of the Cathedral and Cologne, you should consider going on this walking tour of the Old Town of Cologne.

Cologne Cathedral

Explore Museum Ludwig

Home to one of the largest collections of Picasso works in the world, Museum Ludwig is the best art museum to visit if you are trying to see Cologne in 1 day.

The permanent exhibit holds Europe’s largest Pop Art collection, the third largest Picasso collection in the world, and one of the pinnacle exhibitions of German Expressionism. It’s an impressive collection of 20th and 21st-century art that began in 1976 with a mere 350 pieces of modern art that was gifted by private citizens.

There is always a special exhibition running, so make sure to see what’s happening during your visit. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or online and provide access to both the permanent and special collections.

Those who would rather visit a different museum may also be interested inn the EL-DE Haus. This is the former Gestapo headquarters in the city and is a harrowing place to visit, but important to understanding that darker parts of Cologne’s more recent history.

Walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge

This triple-arch bridge has seen many versions of itself throughout Cologne’s history. The original bridge was a railway and road, but was destroyed in 1945. When it was rebuilt, it was designed for foot traffic and trains only.

It sees more than 1,200 trains every day, connecting two major train stations in the city. Spend some time during your visit to Cologne to walk across the bridge. The Cologne Cathedral stands tall on one side, giving you a nice view of the city with the bridge and cathedral.

As you cross the bridge, you might notice love padlocks–famous throughout Italy and in Paris. It’s estimated there are around 500,000 locks attached to the bridge, weighing more than 15 tons.

Wander through the Old Market

Cologne’s Old Town is a charming and quaint section of the city you’ll want to explore. Its narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, and historic buildings make it a favorite place for tourists to stop for lunch or dinner or an afternoon snack.

Alter Markt and Heumarkt are the two main attractions for both residents and visitors. These markets sell hand-crafted artwork and other local goods. Keep an eye out for the colorful buildings meshed with gothic architecture.

This neighbourhood is a great place to enjoy dinner or explore the city’s nightlife by visiting local pubs and breweries. You can also consider going on a brewery tour to learn more about the famous Kölsch beer (Cologne’s local beer) and visit a traditional brauhaus or enjoy a food tour.

Town Hall Tower on Alter Markt

Walk along the Rhine River

For a different way of exploring Cologne, consider seeing it from the River Rhine. Take a boat tour or simple walk along the paved riverfront path to enjoy the scenery.

Cologne is the largest city on the River Rhine, the longest river in Germany, and one of the most traveled waterways in the world. Enjoy the sunset here or stop for an afternoon picnic.

The river path heads past Old Town and connects with the Hohenzollern Bridge, making it easy to see several highlights of Cologne within a small distance.

For a boat trip on the river, you can opt for a dinner cruise or an afternoon tour that details the city’s unique history while seeing its landmarks from water including a view of the cathedral.

Cologne at night from the Rhine River

Day 2 – Cologne Chocolate Museum, Botanical Gardens, Sy Gareon Church & More

Visit the cologne chocolate museum.

When you think of cities and countries in Europe that are famous for chocolate, you most likely imagine places like Bruges in Belgium and Zurich in Switzerland . Well, Germany has a delicious chocolate scene too and a visit to the Cologne Chocolate Museum captures it all.

This museum is a great place to visit if you have 2 days in Cologne. You’ll learn about the entire chocolate-making process, from the cocoa plantation to the chocolate factory.

The tour starts at a large model cocoa tree then guides you through a tropical greenhouse before continuing on your journey through the history of chocolate in Germany.

The museum is a functioning chocolate factory, producing its own chocolate, and has glass-sided machines so visitors can peek in to see the chocolate creation process.

The museum is only closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly. You can buy entry tickets here.

Walk through the Botanical Garden of Cologne

If you’re wondering what to see in Cologne over 2 days, the Botanical Garden of Cologne should be on your list. This expensive and awe-inspiring garden covers 11.5 hectares and houses more than 10,000 species of plants.

There are ponds, flowers, fountains, and walking trails for a quiet afternoon spent within nature, but tucked inside a bustling city. The garden is open year-round from 8 AM to dusk, but the best time to visit is during the spring and summer when the entire garden is in full bloom.

Plan to spend anywhere from 2 to 3 hours visiting the garden to allow yourself plenty of time to wander the space and enjoy its sites.

Cologne Botanical Gardens

Explore St. Gereon Church

The St. Gereon Church will stand out because of its odd shape. This minor basilica boasts a nave that is covered by a decagonal oval dome and was completed on the remains of Roman walls.

This is the largest dome constructed in the West between the 6th century and 15th century. It’s one of the twelve Romanesque churches that Cologne is famous for and frequently compared to the world-renowned Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey and the Duomo in Florence, Italy .

The church is believed to have been built on the grave of St. Gereon, a Roman officer who was killed for his faith. It’s an impressive feat of architecture, both at the time it was built and today. Inside, the dome is painted red with golden ornaments.

Relax in Rheinpark

With 40 hectares of land, the Rheinpark is the largest in Cologne and offers its visitors plenty of space to roam or relax. There are ponds, flower gardens, pathways, courts, and large grass lawns where you can enjoy a sunny afternoon.

If you’re traveling with kids, the park has several playgrounds and a children’s train that runs throughout the park. During your visit to the park, take a ride on the Cologne Rhine Cable Car. This cable car takes riders up to get a panoramic view of the River Rhine and Cologne.

There is also a thermal spa with relaxing wellness treatments and baths. Close your Cologne itinerary with a visit to Rheinpark.

3 Days in Cologne: The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

From towering medieval cathedrals to quirky museums dedicated to chocolate, mustard, and modern art, Cologne (or Köln, as the Germans say) is a city that never fails to surprise. Located on the wide banks of the River Rhine, this is a city with a fascinating past that stretches back to the Roman era.

Cologne has 2,000 years of history for you to explore. Founded as a Roman Colonia (from which we get the name Cologne) in the first century BC, the city is best known for its glorious Romanesque churches and twin-spired Gothic cathedral. Cologne Cathedral is the tallest cathedral in the world, and it’s a sight that pilgrims continue to cross continents to stand in awe of.

Cologne has many more claims to fame. This is the fabled birthplace of Eau de Cologne and the home of Kölsch beer (which you can order in the many Brauhauses in the Old Town), while the Museum Ludwig is packed with modern artwork by famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Simply put, with only 3 days in Cologne, you’ll barely scratch the surface of the best things to do here .

Visit Cologne in summer when the River Rhine is serene, and you’ll find the parks play host to music festivals, including the popular Caribbean-themed Summer Jam, which attracts music lovers from across the world. Visit in winter, and Cologne’s Altstadt (Old Town) is a veritable winter wonderland. Fairytale spires dot the skyline, while Cathedral Square is the scene of the great Cologne Christmas Market.

With so many things to see and do, a weekend in Cologne is never enough. A 3-day getaway is a fantastic place to start, though, and you might just find yourself booking a return trip sooner rather than later. If you’re planning a German city break, then keep reading as we reveal the perfect Cologne itinerary!

How to Spend a Weekend in Cologne, Germany

Getting around cologne.

Getting Around Cologne, Germany: Weekend Itinerary

With a population of over 1 million people within the city limits and as many as 3.6 million inhabitants in its wider urban area, Cologne is an ever-expanding metropolis of districts and suburbs. Luckily, the city’s many districts are also well connected by public transport, and it’s easy to get from one sight to the next with a little forward planning.

What’s our top tip for getting around, though? Buy the Köln Card. This tourist card allows for the free use of public transport within Cologne, as well as free or discounted entry to many of the city’s best sights and attractions.

The closest airport is Cologne-Bonn Airport, which is conveniently located just a 30-minute train ride from the city center. You can jump on the regular S-Bahn or Regional Express (RE) trains to the central Hauptbahnhof, with fares costing as little as 3 Euros each way (or free, if you bought the Köln Card).

Taxis and Ubers are plentiful, although the costs will stack up if you’re using them to get around. The buses and trams are easy to use, while the relatively flat city offers a welcome layout for cyclists.

In the Altstadt, which is situated on the left bank of the River Rhine, you’ll find it’s super easy just to walk around the main sights in Cologne’s beautiful Old Town. In fact, our 3-day Cologne itinerary can be accomplished (and enjoyed!) using a combination of walking and public transport, so we highly recommend investing in that Köln Card!

We love Cologne because it’s that rare city that seamlessly merges history, contemporary culture, and good old-fashioned fun. This is a city that’s as much about the events, restaurants, and beer houses as it is about sightseeing, so our first-day itinerary involves as much eating and drinking as it does ticking off bucket list sights.

Altstadt (Old Town)

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: Altstadt

Your first day in Cologne begins in the Altstadt, where you’ll spend your day strolling from art gallery to Brauhaus as you enjoy the best of the city’s traditional Old Town. The Altstadt is the historic heart of Cologne, and many of the buildings can be traced back centuries to the Middle Ages. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, and although the Altstadt had to be rebuilt from the rubble, you’ll still get those distinctly medieval vibes as you’re wandering around.

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: Hauptbahnhof

You can reach the Altstadt by making your way to Cologne Hauptbahnhof, which is conveniently located next to Cologne’s mighty cathedral on the left bank of the River Rhine. We recommend joining a walking tour of the Altstadt on your first morning in the city. Free walking tours start by the cathedral, and you’ll be immersed in the city’s history as you stroll from one sight to the next.

Visit the Historic Old Town of Cologne

Cologne Cathedral

Weekend in Cologne 3 Days Itinerary: Cologne Cathedral

Walking tours will take in the major sights, but if you decide to go it alone instead, then your first stop will be Cologne Cathedral. You can’t miss it.

This imposing Gothic cathedral has twin spires that rise to lofty heights of 157 meters (515 feet). Dating back to the 13th century, the cathedral is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Shrine of the Three Magi (said to contain the bones of the Three Wise Men that visited Jesus).

3 Days in Cologne Weekend Itinerary: Cologne Cathedral

This iconic attraction receives thousands of pilgrims a day. You can tackle the 533 steps leading to the top of the cathedral, where you’ll not only have sweeping views of the Old Town but be atop the tallest cathedral in the world!

Marvel at the Great Cologne Cathedral

Museum Ludwig

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: Museum Ludwig

After admiring the view, head back down to Cathedral Square – which is where, in winter, you’ll find Cologne’s most popular Christmas market – then make your way to the nearby Museum Ludwig . This is a real cultural highlight because this art gallery is dedicated to 20th-century modernism, expressionism, and pop art. In addition to Warhols and works by Jasper Johns, Museum Ludwig also hosts the third-largest collection of Picasso paintings in the world.

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: Halve Hahn

By now, you’re going to be famished. It’s time for a Halve Hahn, a classic Cologne sandwich that’s prepared using rye bread, gouda cheese, pickles, mustard, and onions. Cathedral Square is close to traditional Brauhaus-style pubs and eateries, and we recommend popping into Brauhaus Fruh am Dom or Brauhaus Sion for a hearty lunch. You can even try a Kölsch , but there will be more of that later, too.

Alter Markt

3 Days in Cologne Weekend Itinerary: Alter Markt

After lunch, walk deeper into the Altstadt, admiring the old architecture and the odd Roman remains as you make your way to the Alter Markt. Here you’ll find the City Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Cologne, while you’ll also be in a prime position to start visiting Cologne’s 12 Romanesque Churches.

The oldest of these catholic churches traces its origins to the 10th century AD, so feel free to visit as many as you desire this afternoon as you get lost in the historic streets of the Altstadt.

Your final stop of the afternoon is the Wallraf-Richartz Museum . With a history dating back to 1824, this is one of the oldest museums in Cologne. Inside, you’ll find one of Germany’s most impressive collections of fine art, with works from as far back as the Middle Ages on display. There are Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Impressionist galleries to peruse, so take your time as you work up an appetite for dinner.

It’s your first night in Cologne, and nothing will beat an evening at the Brauhaus. This is the traditional Cologne-style pub, and many of the best Brauhauses have that distinct old-world feel to them.

Peters Brauhaus

Weekend in Cologne 3 Days Itinerary: Peters Brauhaus

You’ll find plenty of great Brauhauses in the Altstadt (indeed, you would have visited one earlier for lunch). We recommend the traditional charms of Peters Brauhaus or Brauhuas Zum Prinzen . These pubs are all about the Kölsch, the local style of beer that can only be brewed in Cologne.

Kölsch is a distinctive type of pale beer that’s only served in a tall glass named a Stange. Be warned, because there’s a lot of tradition behind Kölsch. Once you’ve sat down at your table, you’ll be continually served Kölsch after Kölsch without having to ask. The server will mark down the number of beers you’ve had, and they’ll only stop serving when you place a coaster on top of your empty Stange!

Cologne Itinerary – Day 2

You might fancy a lazy morning after an evening on the Kölsch. However, if you’re up bright and early, then we suggest spending the first part of Day 2 of your trip to Cologne exploring the city’s urban greenery.

Despite being Germany’s fourth-largest city, Cologne has a surprising number of outdoor spaces, including the Volksgarten, Friedenspark, and Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park. There’s a long green belt to the west of the Altstadt, where there are plenty of opportunities for a morning walk, cycle, or run.

Toward late morning, make your way back to the Altstadt, where it’s time to delve a little deeper into Cologne’s history. While you’ll be familiar with the city’s medieval architecture by now, less remains of Cologne’s Roman origins.

Romano-Germanic Museum

Weekend in Cologne: Romano Germanic Museum

At the Romano-Germanic Museum , though, you’ll learn more about the founding of Cologne as a Roman colony on the Rhine 2,000 years ago. The museum’s exhibition includes archeological finds from the Roman era, including mosaics, tools, weapons, and more.

After a history-filled session at the museum, you’ll be raring for a bite to eat. Carrying on with the Roman theme, you could try a spot of Italian cuisine at Ristorante Alfredo . If you’re a fan of the hearty German dishes, then head to the riverside terrace at Haxenhaus , where you can order huge plates of crispy pork knuckle while sipping on local brews.

Mustard Museum

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: Mustard Museum

You might want to skip the condiments at lunchtime because your next destination is the intriguing Mustard Museum . This unusual site is one of the oldest working mustard mills in Europe, with a history dating back to 1810.

Take a tour, and you’ll learn how mustard was made as far back as the 15th century before seeing firsthand the historic techniques that are still used to make the museum’s high-quality mustard today. If you’ve been enjoying the local sandwiches (which are always covered in mustard!), then you’ll love this quirky stop in Cologne, not least because you can try historic mustard recipes used back in the medieval era.

If mustard isn’t your thing, then why not spend the afternoon at the fascinating Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum instead? This unique institution is an ode to the diversity of the world’s different cultures. Exhibitions offer a glimpse into different cultures and ways of life around the world, including New Zealand, Indonesia, and the USA.

The River Rhine

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: River Rhine Cruise

We’ve still got one more activity for you on Day 2 of your 3-day trip to Cologne. A River Rhine cruise. This is one of the highlights of any Cologne getaway, and you’re going to love spending the afternoon sailing up and down the river as you gaze across the city’s beautiful skyline.

There’s nothing quite comparable to seeing the twin spires of the Cologne Cathedral from the water, while you’ll also have the best view of the famed Hohenzollern Bridge as you cruise right on under it. You might want to try and coincide your river cruise with sunset (cruises are normally an hour long), but whatever the time of day, you’re going to love the experience.

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: Hohenzollern Bridge

After your cruise on the River Rhine, head back to your hotel and freshen up in preparation for the evening. By now we’re sure you’ve had your fill of Cologne’s Brauhauses, so instead, we suggest booking a table at one of the city’s many fine dining restaurants. You can go all out, too, and enjoy a sumptuous tasting menu at one of Cologne’s Michelin-starred restaurants.

Your options include Ox & Klee , where dinner is a theatrical performance made all the better by delectable cuisine. They want you to “experience” the taste, and you can choose between an 8- or 12-course “Ox Menu” (consisting of meat and seafood) or the 8- or 12-course “Klee Menu” (all vegetarian).

For a taste of 19th century Paris in Cologne, head to the two Michelin-starred institution that is Le Moissonnier . Serving patrons since 1897, the retro bistro vibes hide a serious wealth of culinary expertise and taste.

Relax on a Rhine River Cruise

Cologne Itinerary – Day 3

Before you know it, you’re on Day 3 of your Cologne itinerary, and yet you’ll be finding that there’s still much more you need to see in the city. Start your day with an easy stroll along the River Rhine or a light breakfast at your hotel, and prepare yourself for what’s going to be a slightly intense, yet incredibly eye-opening, morning.

NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne

Day 3 begins with a stop at the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne . Germany’s World War II history is still raw, in many respects, and while you might have already learned how much of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing during the conflict, less visible is the Nazi history.

That changes when you walk into what was once the headquarters of the Gestapo (the Nazi secret police) in Cologne, which is now a moving memorial, museum, and warning from the past.

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne

The museum is primarily a memorial to the victims of the Nazi regime, and in particular, those from Cologne who suffered under the Gestapo. The museum also attempts to show what life was like in Cologne during the Nazi era, while explaining the sequence of events that allowed the Nazis to rise to power, before dragging Europe into war and genocide.

You can see the cells where prisoners were kept, learn more about the modern research being carried out in the documentation center, and touch upon one of the darkest periods of Cologne’s modern history.

You’ll need the whole morning to fully appreciate the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne – and be prepared for an emotional visit. Afterward, make your way back to the banks of the River Rhine, where a more lighthearted afternoon awaits you at Cologne’s famous Chocolate Museum .

Explore the NS Documentation Centre

Chocolate Museum

Weekend in Cologne 3 Days Itinerary: Chocolate Museum

This is one of the city’s most famous attractions, and it’s a must-see on your 3-day trip to Cologne. We expect you’re feeling a little peckish at this point in the day, too, so you’ll appreciate all those free samples as you tour through the world of German chocolate.

The museum is located on the wonderful Rheinauhafen Peninsula, overlooking the River Rhine, where you’ll learn all about the history of chocolate dating back to the earliest Mesoamerican civilizations in South America.

3 Days in Cologne Weekend Itinerary: Chocolate Museum

You’ll stroll through a tropical forest, where real cacao trees are grown under artificial conditions, as you see how the Maya and Aztecs made the first drinking chocolate. Learn how chocolate came to Europe, then uncover the story of the museum’s founder, Hans Imhoff, who pioneered German chocolate after World War II.

The museum is now owned by Lindt, and you’re going to love indulging in their classic chocolate selections at the Chocolate Grand Cafe, where cakes, chocolates, drinks, and pancakes await you.

Hohenzollern Bridge

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: Hohenzollern Bridge

After lunch (or just chocolate) at the Chocolate Grand Cafe, you can take a walk north along the river. You’ll pass the Altstadt one last time, then arrive at the Hohenzollern Bridge. This monstrous work of engineering is one of Cologne’s most distinctive sights, and if you take the pedestrian route over the river, you can add a padlock to the legions of lockets, locks, and mementos left on the bridge by couples and lovers in the past.

Cross the Hohenzollern Bridge

Köln Triangle

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: Koln Triangle

On the other side of the Hohenzollern Bridge, you’ll find yourself by the Köln Triangle. This 103-meter-tall (338-foot-tall) building isn’t quite as tall as the Cologne Cathedral on the opposite bank, but the view from the top is easily the best in the city. Make your way to the observation deck, take in the panorama, then return to your hotel, relax, and slowly get ready for another exceptional dinner in Cologne.

Cologne’s dining scene really is eclectic, and on your last evening in the city, another fine dining experience is too good an opportunity to pass up. Your third evening is all about enjoying Cologne’s fusion cuisine scene, which is a beautiful testament to the multicultural nature of modern Germany.

3 Days in Cologne Weekend Itinerary: Koln Triangle

We’ve got several options for you to consider. Prunier Cologne is a Michelin-guide listed restaurant that serves up exquisite caviar and French classics in a modern setting. Sahila , with one Michelin star, draws heavily on Middle Eastern recipes, and Taku – also with one Michelin star – serves up Asian degustation menus in a traditional 19th-century German hotel.

You may have felt like you’re a world away from the Brauhaus on your third evening in Cologne, but after dinner, why not head into the Altstadt for a final session of Kölsch in the local pubs?

Enjoy Panoramic Views from the Köln Triangle

What to do if you have more than 3 days in Cologne

If you have more than 3 days to spend in Cologne, then you’ll love these fantastic day trips from the city:

3 Days in Cologne Itinerary: Bruhl

The town of Brühl is just a 30-minute drive from central Cologne, and it’s home to theme parks and palaces. This is where you’ll find Phantasialand, a family-friendly theme park perfect for day trips. You can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Augustusburg and Falkenlust palaces, which date back to the 18th century.

Cologne 3 Day Itinerary Weekend Guide: Bonn

Follow the River Rhine south, and you’ll soon reach Bonn, another German city of Roman origins that became the capital of West Germany from 1949 until the country was reunified in 1990. Learn more at the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, see the Beethoven House (this is the home city of Beethoven, the famed composer), and visit Bonn Minster, which is a beautiful work of Romanesque architecture.

See the Main Attractions of Bonn

Schloss Drachenburg

3 Days in Cologne Weekend Itinerary: Scholss Drachenburg

If you love a fairytale castle, then visit Schloss Drachenburg . Located in the countryside near Bonn, this beautiful castle was built in the 1880s in the romantic style popular at the time.

Weekend in Cologne 3 Days Itinerary: Aachen

Take a train east, and within an hour you’ll be in the glorious medieval city of Aachen, which sits right on the border with both Belgium and the Netherlands. This was once the seat of Frankish Kings and Holy Roman Emperors, and the cathedral easily rivals that of Cologne. Traditionally, Aachen was also a spa city, and thermal bathing is a pastime very much still enjoyed today.

Discover Aachen’s Highlights

Weekend in Cologne: Dusseldorf

Escape the medieval vibes found south of Cologne, and instead, head north to experience the modern skyline of Dusseldorf. Admire the view from the Rhine Tower, stroll along the Rhine Embankment Promenade, and explore Hofgarten.

Experience Düsseldorf from the Rhine

There you have it! The perfect 3-day Cologne itinerary. How will you spend a weekend in Cologne?

  • Extremely affordable

Roman History Self-Guided Audio Guide Walking Tour (1 hr)

  • Highly-rated & budget-friendly
  • Discover Cologne's rich Roman history

1. Cologne City Discovery Game

If you enjoy puzzles and solving clues under a time limit, you'll have a blast with the Cologne City Discovery Game ! I think this city-wide game is best played with a partner or a group, so everyone can get their minds together.

Best part is you don't need to download an app. We got a special link to play the game, and we only used our phones.

My group of friends and I navigated our way through the city, solving riddles, reading historical trivia, and drawing maps on our palm!

This city tour is a super fun way to see the city, and a refreshing departure from typical guided tours. It was very well thought-out, and we got 16 clues that took us around famous must-see sights and lesser-known spots.

If you're worried the clues are "too easy", no. The questions took us some time to unravel which made it interesting, but weren't overly challenging. And the time limit definitely added to the excitement!

  • Combines city tour & playful riddles for a fun-filled afternoon
  • Uncover Cologne's history and secrets while solving clues
  • Available in English and German
  • Suitable for teams of 1 to 5 people, perfect for friends or family
  • No app download needed
  • Requires access to a smartphone and internet connection
  • May not be suitable if you have mobility issues

2. Highlights Self-Guided Scavenger Hunt & Tour

For the price, the  Highlights Self-Guided Scavenger Hunt & Tour is a great bargain. It's like getting a tour of Cologne's top ten attractions and a fun scavenger hunt, all rolled into one.

The app took us on whirlwind tour of the Old Town, Cologne Cathedral, Great St. Martin Church and less known attractions like the the Fishmarket and Heinzelmännchenbrunnen. [ 2 ]

At each new location you find, the game reveals a little-known anecdote about it - and as someone who thought I knew Cologne like a native, I still managed to learn something new.

If solving riddles, figuring out puzzles, and discovering interesting facts and stories are your thing, then Highlights Self-Guided Scavenger Hunt & Tour is perfect.

Plus it's a  fantastic  option if you don't want to spend money on a  guided tour , but want to see the city in a way you really can't with a guidebook.

  • Go on a scavenger hunt & "highlights" tour of Cologne using a mobile app
  • Experience the city's top 10 attractions while solving riddles & puzzles
  • Costs just a few euros
  • Navigate effortlessly with clear English/German instructions
  • Requires a smartphone or tablet with internet access
  • Needs downloading an app to get started

3. Roman History Self-Guided Audio Guide Walking Tour

I'm a bit of a Roman history nut, so I couldn't resist the allure of a  Roman History Self-Guided Audio Guide Walking Tour , ha!

It didn't cost much and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I got out of it. With the audio guide playing in my ears, I felt like I had taken a journey back in time, when Roman first occupied Cologne. [ 1 ]

I found the tour incredibly well-structured; it starts at the Kreuzblume beside Cologne Cathedral, guides you through historical sites like St Maria im Kapitol and ends near Germany’s oldest stone tower - Ubii Monument.

Podcaster and historian Willem Fromm's narration was engaging and kept me hooked throughout.

His expertise is apparent, you get fascinating stories about Roman soldiers and even the 1969 moon landing (weirdly linked to the Romans!) that only someone like him knows.

The tour app, uses GPS so the audio plays automatically when you reach specific landmarks. What's great is it works offline if you download the tour beforehand!

  • Audio guide on Cologne's Roman history by expert Willem Fromm, with up-to-date information
  • Explore Cologne at your own pace with a mobile app with detailed, turn-by-turn instructions
  • Choose English or German audio
  • Lifetime access to the audio guide
  • Offline access to audio, maps, and geodata without needing an internet connection while on the tour
  • Focused mainly on Roman history, which might not be suitable if you're looking for a "top sight" kind of tour.

4. Ehrenfeld Industry & Culture Self-guided Walk

[German language only] If you want to get to know Cologne's artsy side, take this self-guided tour of Ehrenfeld, Cologne's creative quarter.

The walking tour is described as "like being shown Ehrenfeld by a good friend", and is an interesting 1-2 hour walk through its colorful street art , multicultural suburbs and a hidden tunnel...

...While answering tasks and quizzes along the way!

What sets this apart from traditional tours is that it takes you to a really different side of Cologne, through one of Germany's most vibrant districts.

  • See the creative district of Cologne and find out why it's one of the city's most interesting quarters
  • Interesting stories about Ehrenfeld's history in Cologne
  • Solve fun tasks & questions along the way
  • Affordable price for an afternoon well spent
  • No app download needed, accessible offline
  • Only in German language, which may exclude non-German speakers
  • No audio guide, read-only format

5. Cologne Old Town: Outdoor Escape Game

[German language only]  Escape games have always intrigued me, but this takes the experience to a whole new level.

Turning Cologne into possibly the world's largest escape room, this outdoor escape game puts you on a mission to save the city, and the clock's ticking.

You'll meet your game master at the meeting point, and are given an iPad. These iPads give you clues and puzzles, and if you're with friends, you'll need to work together to crack codes and solve riddles.

Each clue we uncovered led us deeper into the city's rich history, with every twist and turn revealing more about Cologne's past.

Even when we got stumped, our personal game master was there through live chat support, giving enough hints to get us back on track without spoiling the fun.

If you’re planning a visit to Cologne and want a heart-pumping way to see the city, while testing your problem-solving skills, give this escape game a go!

  • It's a one-of-a-kind experience in Cologne, turning the city into a playground for puzzle-solving and adventure
  • Access to a live game master to guide you throughout the adventure
  • Encourages collaboration and teamwork between children, families, couples and first-timers to Cologne
  • No need for smartphones or internet connection
  • The game comes with a higher price tag
  • Requires pick up and return of the game iPad

6. Scavenger Hunt Self-Guided Tour (for groups)

[German language only]  This scavenger hunt of Cologne begins with the arrival of a box delivered to your door, containing 16 sealed envelopes. Once you receive the box, you and your group are ready to set off into the city!

The envelopes contain riddles leading you through various attractions across Cologne - from the iconic Dome to the picturesque Rhine Promenade.

The envelopes also provide the historical background for each attraction you visit.

With each riddle you solve, you also get a number that corresponds to the next envelope you should open. This keeps the intrigue, as you won't know what's next!

If you’re in a group and looking to get to know Cologne via an adventure, definitely consider this scavenger hunt tour!

  • The mysterious package and envelopes containing riddles brings a twist, turning what could be a mundane sightseeing tour into an exciting game
  • You have the freedom to explore the city at your own pace
  • No smartphone or internet access needed
  • Higher price tag is better value when shared among a group
  • Shipping and delivery of the game box requires 4 working days and an address, which may be hard to do if you're traveling

Benefits of a Self-Guided Walking Tour in Cologne

Flexibility and freedom.

In general, self-guided walking tours in Cologne are unbeatable in flexibility and freedom. You set your own start time, pace, and NO rushing to keep up with a group, or dawdling because someone else needs more time.

You're free to explore landmarks that actually interest you! Turning left where everyone else turns right, if something catches your eye. I like that.

You get to end the day feeling like your experience was unique to you and your group, since you can explore parts of Cologne that are missed in traditional guided tours.

Cost-Effectiveness

A self-guided walking tour typically costs a fraction of a guided one, and there's a variety of options that really make up for the lack of a guide.

In Cologne, there are A LOT of creative self-guided tours, from the use of apps and audio-guides, to adding gameplay and mystery. It's no longer trying to guide yourself with a paper map.

And the love for their city really comes through, almost like they can't wait to share every historical tidbit and interesting nook and cranny with you.

The fact that these tours help you explore the city's highlights without burning a hole in your pocket, is incredible.

Personalized Experience

Switching to a self-guided walking tour in Cologne gives you the power to create your own unique adventure.

Honestly, Cologne has a lot to offer, and most guided tours can't be customized to fit everyone in the group. With a self-guided tour, you can.

If you enjoy Roman history, then spend more time on those parts of your tour. If you like street art, you can pause and linger longer at spaces with interesting graffiti. Drop by an interesting cafe, even if it's not on the route.

You decide what time to start, which attractions to linger at and when to take breaks!

Explore at Your Own Pace

Exploring at your own pace is one of the greatest benefits of taking a self-guided walking tour in Cologne.

With the freedom to choose your stops, you can tailor your walking experience to match your interests.

You don't have to worry about keeping up with a group or sticking to a strict schedule. Instead, you can take as much time as you need at each attraction.

Local Insights

Exploring Cologne on a self-guided walking tour is more than just "sightseeing". Most of these tours aim to introduce you to the local culture and unique parts of the city.

They'll guide you towards hidden gems, little known historical remnants, and landmarks that are often overlooked by traditional guided tours.

And because you're without a guide, oftentimes you're drawn to engage with locals along your route. Perhaps asking for directions, or with help to solve certain puzzles. That's something you don't usually do on a guided tour!

Cultural Immersion

Exploring Cologne on your own is a great way to get to know its culture. You can go at your own speed and really dig into the city's history and traditions.

Self-guided tours provide commentary and reveal stories that lead you closer to a deeper understanding of Cologne's colorful past and present.

Whether it's strolling through hispter neighborhoods or visiting local museums and landmarks, self-guided exploration still allows you to really get to know the city in a way that rivals a guided tour.

Tips for Planning and Enjoying a Self-Guided Walking Tour in Cologne

Research and plan your route.

You can absolutely start your tour without any preparations, but I like a bit of planning to get the most out of my time.

Before setting off, I usually take some time to research the landmarks we'll see. Sometimes you can get bits of information about interesting details to take note of, or unique little cafes to stop at.

This will help you get a sense of what to expect and make sure you don't miss out on any must-visit spots!

Utilize Offline Maps and Audio Guides

Because you're taking a self-guided tour, offline maps and audio guides help you save on phone data. These resources are designed to help you navigate the city without the need for an internet connection.

With offline maps, you can easily find your way around and explore at your own pace.

The audio guides provide narration by local storytellers, giving you insights into the history and culture of Cologne as you walk.

Dress Comfortably and Wear Appropriate Footwear

These tours involve a lot of walking and exploring, so being comfortable is key to enjoying the experience.

Choose comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and shoes with cushioning.

Avoid wearing high heels or uncomfortable shoes that may cause pain or hinder your ability to explore freely.

Pack Essentials such as Water and Sunscreen

Staying hydrated throughout the day is crucial, especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors.

Bottled water is easily available in Cologne, so there's no reason not to stay hydrated as you explore the city.

And don't forget to protect your skin from the sun's by applying lots of sunscreen with a high SPF.

Take Breaks to Appreciate Local Cuisine

One of the best parts of a self-guided tour is you get to choose where and when you eat!

You're free to take breaks and enjoy the charming local eateries that dot your route.

When in Cologne, the must-try are the local Kölsch beer, Himmel un Äd, Halver Hahn, Sauerbraten, Krüstchen, and local snacks like Kölner Kranz and Rievkooche!

By taking breaks for food tastings , you really get a deeper understanding of this city, and visiting local restaurants allow you to connect with Cologne's traditions and way of life.

Capture Memorable Moments

On a self-guided walking tour, you'll have plenty of opportunities to capture memorable photos.

From exploring historic Roman sites, going on a scavenger hunt adventure, and strolling through Ehrenfeld's arty streets.

The detailed route maps make it easy to navigate the city and find those perfect picture-perfect locations.

Safety Precautions for a Self-Guided Walking Tour in Cologne

Stay aware of your surroundings.

If you're doing your own tour in Cologne alone or in small numbers, I have to caution that you should remain aware of your surroundings.

Especially if you have your nose buried in a walking map, or have your ears drowned out by an audio guide.

As I navigate the city streets, I usually make it a point to stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially when exploring at night.

Stay alert to your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts if something feels unsafe or uncomfortable.

It is also recommended to share your itinerary with a trusted person so they know where you'll be during the tour.

Abide by Local Laws and Regulations

You still have to be respectful for the city's rules. For example, many travelers unintentionally (or intentionally) trespass into private property when exploring Cologne.

Just use your common sense, and be aware of any restrictions or guidelines regarding behavior, noise levels, photography, and access to certain areas.

Lastly, pay attention to traffic and road safety!!

Carry Necessary Identification and Emergency Contacts

It is important to carry necessary identification and emergency contacts while wandering around Cologne as a traveler.

Your identification should include personal documents such as a passport or ID card, which may be required for certain attractions or in case of any unforeseen incidents.

Additionally, having emergency contacts readily available can be essential in case of emergencies during the tour.

This includes the contact information of local authorities like the police or emergency services, as well as the contact details of family or friends who can be reached in case of an emergency.

By carrying these essential items with you, you can ensure a safe and secure walking tour experience in Cologne.

Share Your Itinerary with a Trusted Individual

Sharing your itinerary ensures that there is someone who knows your whereabouts and can provide assistance if needed.

It not only helps ensure your safety but also provides peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones!

Trust Your Instincts and Avoid Dangerous Situations

Personal safety should be your top priority when taking a self-guided walking tour in Cologne.

Trusting your instincts and avoiding dangerous situations is best for staying safe during your exploration.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar or risky areas.

Be Mindful of Traffic and Road Safety

Remember that Cologne's roads can get crowded, so exercise caution when crossing streets or navigating intersections.

Stay on designated pedestrian pathways whenever possible and follow traffic signals and signs.
