How to get around Madrid?

Madrid is a city that is largely explored on foot.

Walking between the various tourist attractions, while looking at the beautiful buildings, is an integral part of the trip experience.

As mentioned, the more central your hotel is the less you will have to wander around.

On the other hand, even so, Madrid's tourist sites are not necessarily close to each other.

Meaning: You will probably find yourself traveling on Madrid's public transport more than once during the trip.

Metro - Many know the most convenient way to get around Madrid.

The subway in Madrid is well networked, the lines are relatively fast and the operating hours suit the needs of most travelers.

Prices depend on the specific itinerary, with some multi-trip tickets discounting the picture.

Buses - The buses in Madrid are operated by the EMT company , which offers about 100 active lines from early morning until evening.

The rates are similar to those of the metro.

Disadvantages: The lines are considered less efficient than the metro lines. In addition, they are exposed to the traffic jams that characterize Madrid for quite a few hours.

Train - Madrid has a "regular" train infrastructure, which is mostly operated by Renfe .

These trains are usually used to make the journey from Madrid to other destinations in Spain, whether as part of excursions (Toledo or Segovia for example) or as part of a comprehensive trip in several cities: Barcelona, Valencia, southern cities and so on.

Trains can also be used to reach the suburbs of Madrid, although we will not usually use them to travel in Madrid itself.

Cons: Low availability, lack of coverage of the city itself.

Taxis - Taxi services in Madrid are available and offered at reasonable prices compared to other places in the world. It is a relatively easy way to get to any point in the city, even if the other public transport infrastructure does not cover it.

Disadvantages: Taxi prices are still significantly more expensive than Madrid's other means of public transport. In addition, taxi drivers do not always speak English and can not always avoid traffic jams.

The former name of the district was the "Barrio de las Maravillas".

The district of Malasania is also officially called the "Universidad" district (el Barrio de Universidad), which makes it a district with three different names.

The center of "Malasaña" is the square of May 2 (Plaza dos de Mayo). On May 2, 1808, Madrid was surrounded and besieged by French forces led by Napoleon.

The people of Madrid rose up as Napoleon's vow, started a revolt, and fought with all their might. The revolt broke outright in this square. Goya's paintings, "May 2" and "May 3," were influenced by this revolution. Many young people fought in the revolt.

One of the young women was Manuela Malasania. Manuela was a young seamstress, who was arrested and executed for carrying scissors, which the French said were weapons. The district of Malasaña got its name in her memory.

The district of Malasaña excels in its coexistence.

During the day you can walk the streets with the elderly of the area and enjoy coffee in a vintage-style cafe or a good meal in one of the many restaurants.

In the evening, people of all kinds can be found on the streets of the district, from businessmen to students.

At night, the district changes its face and becomes lively, full of nightclubs and bar s, where it is customary to meet all the specials and people of Madrid, especially musicians and artists.

It is one of the classic areas for spending an evening in Madrid.

Travel tips for 3 days in madrid

1/ Most of Madrid's attractions can be seen within 2-4 days. Some people find this to be enough. Others, on the other hand, are interested in making the trip more relaxed, exploring different places in the city (the squares, markets, parks, and more). Therefore the trip can be extended.

In my opinion, in 3-4 days in Madrid the city can be exhausted.

On longer trips I recommend you combine one or two trips for day trips in the vicinity of Madrid: Toledo, Segovia, and so on.

2/ Special Events - Madrid is packed with events, gigs, and festivals. It is advisable to find out at the time of your arrival in the city if any performance that speaks to you is expected. Of course, Real Madrid football games also come into the picture.

You can schedule the trip according to them.

3/ English - Many Madrid residents do not speak English, even at the most basic level.

You can walk around the city with a guidebook or a tourist guide that will make it easier to get around. An English map, distributed in most hotels, can do the job.

4/ VAT refund - An option that many are not aware of is to receive VAT refunds on purchases made in Madrid.

The refund is only for items whose prices exceed 90 euros.

Make sure the seller in the store fills out the relevant form (VIA) for you and take it to the customs counter at Madrid Airport for your flight back home.

if you are planning a trip to Madrid or you are traveling now in madrid, I hope this 3 day madrid Itinerary will help you and inspire you!

Right at the heart of the Spanish nation, the booming and buzzing metropolis of Madrid continues to pump with energy and action more than 2,500 years after the Visigoth tribesmen and Roman jet setters of Hispania first made their mark on the banks of Manzanares River. This is a land of aromatic tapas bars, labyrinthine super clubs, a Royal Palace and vast palatial villas, and endless exhibition centres laden with masterworks bearing the names of Picasso and Monet and Goya. This is where Cervantes penned his epic Quixote narratives; where St Francis of Assisi rested while on his Pilgrimages through Iberia; and where you simply cannot afford to miss your cultural fix.  Be sure to ask your Madrid tourist guide for tips on the literary Barrio de las Letras, the famed Museum Triangle and the grand churches of the Plaza Mayor. Then there’s Madrid’s nightlife—nothing short of legendary the Continent over. Begin early on, with some plates of mezze tapas in the hole-in-the-wall joints of downtown, heading later for the Gran Via clubs or the wine bars of La Latina.

Great tour company

Not sure which tour was better- getting into the Vatican early or taking the train to Florence to see the David! The Tour Guy planned everything for us right down to the progressive food tour, The guides were very knowledgeable and even pointed out some things no one in the group knew. We have another trip planned in 2026 will definitely use them for all our tours again.

Made Our Trip Memorable!

We booked multiple tours in Rome and each one was outstanding. The catacombs, the foodie tour and especially the early access to the Vatican. All the guides were friendly and knowledgeable and on time, we had ZERO issues! Bucket list items checked off, we will book more tours when we go to London.

Great experience on land and water!

We used The Tour Guy experiences in Amsterdam last year. We’ve booked tours in Italy and France from them before, and decided to try out the canal tour and1/2 day bike tour. Booking was a breeze and communication leading up to and the day-of the tour was great! The canal tour did not disappoint, but the bike tour was our favorite. Beautiful day and new bikes, route was very manageable, and we had an extremely knowledgeable guide. Would 10/10 recommend both!

Do not use this tour company

We booked a tour with this company, at the Louvre in Paris, and no tour guide showed up. We contacted the company, waited an hour, no tour guide ever showed up, and so we had no tickets to get in. We spent four hours waiting for the next chance to get into the Louvre. They said they would refund the tickets, but we felt like that simply was not enough as we lost a half day of a short vacation in Paris, we had to change other plans, etc. Another company tour guide was there, but he could not get our tickets so we could not join his tour group. Would never, ever book a tour with this company again.

We booked a tour in Rome with the Tour…

We booked a tour in Rome with the Tour Guy. When my husband had a medical emergency and we couldn’t go on the trip, they would not refund our money for a paid tour. I understand cancellation policy but not for a medical emergency. Will never use then again

STAY AWAY FROM THE TOUR GUYS

We had booked a tour of Windsor Castle for the last day of our vacation in London. I received all of my vouchers and also received the confirmation email the day before the tour. We meet the tour bus at the designated date and time. We boarded the van and come to find out The Tour Guys had overbooked the van. The tour guide then reviewed her list and we were not on it. So even though I had my vouchers and my confirmation email we were told to leave the van and they drove off to Windsor Castle leaving us stranded on some street corner in London. I tried calling their offices but no one answered. It being the last day of our vacation we missed Windsor Castle. STAY AWAY FROM THE TOUR GUYS!

Colosseum tour

We had a 3 hr tour of the Colosseum and Palatine hill with Luigi which was amazing. He was so knowledgeable. Excellent!

Book with awareness.

Book with awareness. We booked a once in the lifetime trip to see the colosseum in Rome, January 2024. We carefully selected a noon timeslot knowing that we arrive in Rome that morning and can't possibly make 8am. 30 days prior to the tour we received a reschedule for an 8:15 tour. This is impossible for us to meet but the company has zero flexibility - even though they have an 11am tour still advertised! We now don't have a colosseum tour booked - and the company is refusing a refund or reschedule!

Stay away from tour guy

Seeing the youtube videos we jumped and booked semi day tour of paris. Apparently the guide had cold and wasnt wearing a mask. And was so disorganised that had forgotten to charge the batter of the speakers. Also she wasnt knowledgeable to many of the questions the group asked. And had the audacity to leave us hanging in the middle of the tour. A very bad taste in mouth

Date of experience : January 03, 2024

We didn’t got any help when trying to…

We didn’t got any help when trying to find the guide in Paris. We had a contact number to the guide but it was the number to the office of this company, and a person in another country answered and could not help us. Since this was “our fault” as the company said, we could not get any refund, not even a partial. The ticket was for 4 people to the palace of Versailles, so this was a really large amount which we paid to the company, to provide us a guided visit. When we complained, they didn't even gave us the opportunity to get a new visit somewhere else, or any kind of service to not loose a good customer. So unprofessional and really, really not nice!

Legends and Lore Tower of London DISAPPOINTED!!😢

We booked the Legends and Lore Tower of London and it was a complete waste of time and money. We arrived 10 minutes early as per the instructions at the meeting point. The voucher stated a representative holding a The Tour Guy sign would be there. But she wasn’t holding a sign and only asked people if they were there for a tour. We said yes and then she asked if it was with The Tour Guy. She confirmed a few others. But was missing two. We waited a bit but again, not holding a sign would make it impossible for someone to find the guide. Because of this we departed 8 minutes late and had to rush our way through the massive crowds at Parliament Square to the boat tour which had already left without us. So we had to wait 30 minutes for the next one. It’s actually a public taxi boat and made other stops like a bus would. So 90 minutes later we arrived at Tower of London. Instead of taking us straight inside to start the tour, proceeds to tell us other things about the area. By the time we entered the Tower of London, it was now almost 2 hours into the tour. The rest of the tour was all outside. She did not take us inside any of the buildings. The highlight for many is The Crown Jewels and she acknowledged that. When we got to that building she stated “oh how lucky there’s no line up” and then kept us another 20 minutes outside showing us pictures from the book she had on things we would have learned inside. We then noticed a line up starting to form so we left the group to not waste anymore time. I feel like we got very little out of this tour on the actual Tower of London. After we finished seeing The Crown Jewels we joined the last Beefeater tour which is free with admission to Tower of London and got much more out of that. The audio self-guided tour I believe would have been a better option than The Tour Guy.

DO NOT BOOK UNTIL YOU READ THIS

DO NOT BOOK I booked and paid for a trip 5 months ago and when I arrived in Florence for the trip I was turned away at 7am saying the tour company had no record of my tour. The tour guide do not care. Refunded my $230 but $230 is irrelevant compared to the $3000+ my trip cost me only to be ruined by TTG. MASSIVE RISK USING THIS WEBSITE

Day 1 | Morning Itinerary

Day 1 | afternoon itinerary, day 2 | morning itinerary, day 2 | afternoon itinerary, day 3 | morning itinerary, day 3 | afternoon itinerary, final words, how to visit madrid in 3 days: day 1.

Stop 1: Typical Spanish breakfast

Breakfast for your day in Madrid

Start your first day in Madrid by having a traditional Spanish breakfast at the famous Chocolatería San Ginés. Indulge in some delicious chocolate con churros , a sweet treat that will give you the energy you need to explore the city.

Choosing a well-located accommodation is essential to make the most of your trip, check out my post with the best places to stay in Madrid .

Stop 2: Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol at Christmas

After breakfast, head to Puerta del Sol , the bustling central square of Madrid. Take in the sights of the La Mariblanca statue, the Tio Pepe neon sign, and the mounted statue of King Charles III of Spain in the center of the square.

Don’t forget to snap a picture with the Kilometer 0 plaque , which marks the starting point of the entire Spanish road network. Marvel at the El Oso y el Madroño sculpture, which represents the coat of arms of the capital of Spain.

The House of the Post Office is a historic building that dates back to the 18th century. It is known for its iconic clock tower, which is the main attraction during the countdown to the New Year. Thousands of people gather in the square to celebrate New Year’s Eve and participate in the tradition of eating twelve grapes at midnight , symbolizing good luck for each of the twelve months of the coming year.

Stop 3: Las Letras neighborhood

Santa Ana square is must if you are in Madrid for 2 days

From Puerta del Sol, walk along Espoz y Mina and Álvarez Gato streets until you reach the picturesque Santa Ana Square in the Las Letras neighborhood. Here, you’ll find the historic Español Theater and the beautiful Reina Victoria Hotel.

Stop 4: Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is a must-see attraction

Next, head to Plaza Mayor, one of Madrid’s most famous and historic squares. Admire the stunning architecture of the surrounding buildings and the bronze equestrian statue of King Philip III from 1616 in the middle of the square.

Take a stroll around the square and soak in the lively atmosphere. Plaza Mayor is a must-visit spot to sample one of Madrid’s most popular food specialties , the calamari sandwich. If your stomach is already grumbling, head over to the iconic La Campana or La Ideal restaurants, where you can indulge in this famous appetizer.

Stop 5: San Miguel Market

San Miguel Market has become one of the most well-known Madrid landmarks

Just a short walk from Plaza Mayor is the San Miguel Market, a must-visit food market in Madrid. Sample some of the delicious local specialties and grab a quick snack before continuing your exploration of the city.

It was constructed in 1916 and still preserves an outstanding iron frame. Thousands of locals and tourists come to this market to sample the delicious tapas , wines, and beers, and this is a must-visit spot if you visit Madrid in 3 days.

Stop 6: Plaza de la Villa

Plaza de la Villa for Madrid in 2 days

Make your way to the charming Plaza de la Villa, a beautiful square that is home to some of Madrid’s oldest buildings . Admire the architecture of the Casa de la Villa, Casa y Torre de los Lujanes, and the Casa de Cisneros, three of the most impressive buildings in the square.

In my opinion, Plaza de la Villa is one of the most historic and charming attractions in Madrid .

Stop 7: La Latina

Casa Lucio in La Latina

Finish up your morning in the trendy La Latina neighborhood, known for its vibrant atmosphere and lively nightlife . Explore the narrow streets and alleys lined with bars and restaurants, and get a taste of the local culture.

Cava Baja Street is the perfect place to get some rest and have lunch. My recommendation is Casa Lucio , one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Madrid. Remember to book a table in advance to avoid waiting times and make the most of your 3 days in Madrid.

Stop 8: San Francisco el Grande

San Francisco el Grande Church

After lunch, continue the visit to Madrid in 3 days walking around the area near La Cebada Market. Later, head to the San Francisco el Grande church , a stunning Baroque-style church with a beautiful dome that offers incredible views of the city.

The schedule is quite tight, so let´s continue with this 3-day Madrid itinerary.

Stop 9: La Almudena Cathedral

La Almudena dome offers stunning views of Madrid’s Royal Palace

Next, visit the La Almudena Cathedral, a modern cathedral that blends contemporary and traditional architectural styles.

It was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993, and it is dedicated to the Virgin of the Almudena , the patron saint of Madrid. At a height of more than 70 meters, the dome offers stunning views of the city .

Stop 10: Royal Palace

Madrid Royal Palace

Just a short walk from the cathedral is the Royal Palace of Madrid. This stunning palace is one of the most important landmarks in the city and offers a glimpse into the rich history of Spain.

Although nowadays it is not the royal family’s home, it continues to be their official residence . The Changing of the Guard takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In my opinion, if you spend 3 days in Madrid, you have enough time to visit the interior of the palace. The visit will take you around one hour, and you can save time by booking a skip-the-line ticket or a guided tour .

Stop 11: Plaza de Oriente

What to see in Madrid in a day

Now take a stroll through the beautiful Plaza de Oriente, a square located in front of the Palace. Admire the stunning sculptures, gardens, and fountains that decorate the square, and take in the beautiful views of the palace and the city.

In the middle of the square, there is a 17th-century bronze monument dedicated to Philip IV. It was the first equestrian statue supported only by the hind legs.

Stop 12: Palace Gardens

Sabatini Gardens are considered some of the best parks in Madrid Spain

Take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Sabatini and Campo del Moro Gardens , both located near the Royal Palace. Enjoy the tranquility and peacefulness of these beautiful green spaces. They are also a great spot to admire a beautiful sunset in Madrid.

At this point, you will be pretty close to Plaza España. So if you still have some time before dinner, on the ground floor of the Edificio España you will find the largest store of the famous Spanish brand Zara .

And on the 27th floor you will find one of the most breathtaking rooftop terraces in the city , it is the perfect Instagram spot!

Riu Plaza España

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the popular Fuencarral Street and the trendy Malasaña neighborhood .

Stop 4: Cibeles

Cibeles fountain

Take a leisurely stroll down Gran Vía and Alcalá Streets and admire the stunning Cibeles Palace, home to the City Hall and a symbol of Madrid’s grandeur and elegance. The Cibeles Fountain is famous worldwide , as it is the place where Real Madrid fans gather to celebrate the team’s victories.

Stop 5: Paseo del Prado (1)

Paseo del Prado

Finally, reach the Paseo del Prado, one of Madrid’s most emblematic streets. Paseo del Prado is unique in the world because it houses the top three museums in Madrid in less than one mile: the Prado, the Reina Sofia National Art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums.

Start at the Neptune Fountain and walk towards the Prado Museum, taking in the beautiful buildings and landmarks along the way.

Stop 6: Huertas Street

End your morning route in the charming Huertas Street, a popular area for tapas and lunch. Take your pick from the numerous bars and restaurants and enjoy some traditional Spanish cuisine.

Stop 7: El Prado Museum

Prado Museum is one of my top 3 art favorite galleries in Madrid

In the afternoon, head back to the Paseo del Prado and spend a few hours exploring the world-renowned Prado Museum , home to an impressive collection of Spanish and European art.

El Prado Museum is a must-see if you visit Madrid in 3 days. It is home to one of the world’s most extensive art collections , including works by Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Diego Velázquez, and Francisco de Goya, among others. My advice is, in order to make the most of your stay, purchase the skip-the-line ticket or book a guided tour .

Stop 8: Paseo del Prado (2)

San Jeronimo el Real

After exploring the museum, continue along the Paseo del Prado towards El Retiro Park. Admire the beautiful buildings and gardens along the way, including San Jeronimo el Real church , the Botanical Garden, and the CaixaForum Madrid vertical garden.

Stop 9: El Retiro Park

Rent a boat in El Retiro Park

Spend some time wandering through the lush gardens of El Retiro Park , one of Madrid’s most beloved green spaces. Highlights include the crystal palace, the boating lake, and the statue of the Fallen Angel.

This unique park is a popular spot among locals, to work out or to take a stroll and slow down after a busy day. The Big Pond is one of the most popular spots in El Retiro Park where many locals and tourists rent rowboats and have fun while enjoying the sunny weather in the city.

When exploring Madrid in 3 days you have enough time to rent a boat and have some fun, follow my guide to get the tickets easily .

Stop 10: Puerta de Alcalá

Puerta de Alcalá

Next, head to the majestic Puerta de Alcalá, an iconic symbol of Madrid and one of the city’s most impressive landmarks . It was the first of its kind to be built after the fall of the Roman Empire, making it even older than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Stop 11: Plaza de Colón

Columbus square

From the Puerta de Alcalá, make your way to Columbus Square, a large square named after Christopher Columbus . Here you will find the National Library and the impressive Columbus Monument. The square is also been home to the world’s largest Spanish flag.

Stop 12: Salamanca neighborhood (1)

End your day with a stroll through the luxurious Salamanca neighborhood, also known as the Golden Mile . This upscale area is home to designer boutiques, art galleries, and some of the city’s best restaurants to have dinner.

Itinerary for 3 days in Madrid: Day 3

Stop 1: Reina Sofía Museum

tour guy madrid

I know that it is quite hard to explore Madrid in 3 days but come on, this is your last day!

Let´s start the day by visiting the Reina Sofía Museum, another must-see art gallery in Madrid, known for its collection of modern and contemporary art. One of the museum’s highlights is Picasso’s famous painting, “Guernica “.

Stop 2: Lavapiés neighborhood

Madrid street art

Lavapiés is a multicultural neighborhood that is full of energy and life. It’s a great place to wander and discover street art , unique shops, and delicious food.

Stop 3: Madrid Río

Madrid Río can be considered one of the best parks in Madrid due to the numerous and impressive bridges such as Toledo, Arganzuela, or the twin bridges

Our next stop is the Madrid Rio Park, on a route that passes near the Toledo Gate and the Toledo Bridge. Madrid Río is one of the best Madrid´s urban parks and home to plenty of facilities for family recreation.

Stop 4: Temple of Debod

Debod temple is one of the best spots in Madrid for watching sunsets

Enjoy a pleasant walk through Madrid Rio Park to Legazpi Station and take the metro (line 3) to Plaza de España. Now walk to the Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple that was gifted to Spain in 1968. It is located in the beautiful Oeste Park and offers stunning views of the city.

Long layover in Madrid? Here's what you need to know

Lori Zaino

Barajas is Spain's largest airport in terms of size, operations and passenger traffic and the airport is located just 12 miles from the city center.

The name of the airport was previously just "Madrid-Barajas", but it got its newer, longer title in 2014, to honor the late Adolfo Suárez, the first prime minister of Spain after the reintroduction of democracy.

Terminal 4. Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy

If you're one of the lucky flyers transiting through the Spanish hub here's everything you need to know for your layover.

Madrid has four main passenger terminals: T1, T2, T3 and T4 and a satellite terminal, T4S. While T1, T2 and T3 (this terminal is mainly an extension of T2) are all connected, T4 and its satellite terminal, T4S (both serving Oneworld), are the newest terminals and opened in 2006.

Getting between terminals

While T1, T2 and T3 are connected and walkable, you can't get from there to T4 on foot. Instead, you'll have to drive, take a ride-hailing service or a taxi. There's also a free shuttle bus that runs 24 hours a day between the terminals. You can catch the bus in the arrivals area of each terminal -- just look for an Alsa bus with the digital screen in the front saying T1-T2-T3-T4. The frequency is as follows:

  • From 6:30 a.m. – 23:30 p.m. every five minutes.
  • From 23:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. every 10 minutes.
  • From 2:30 a.m. – 6:30 a.m. every 20 minutes.

Terminals 1, 2 and 3

You can walk between these three terminals, though it may take you some time to get from one to the other. You'll likely be flying out of T1 or T2, as T3 is rarely used. T1 operates mostly non-Oneworld international flights that are outside the Schengen countries. Most flights within the EU/Schengen countries fly out of T2. If you do fly out of T3, it will likely be on a regional flight.

There are Priority Pass lounges in all three terminals:

  • T1 has the Cibeles Lounge after passport control near gate B26. This one features a sun terrace, so make sure to go outside if the weather is nice.
  • T2/T3 has Puerta de Alcala Lounge near Gate D62 upstairs and the Puerta Del Sol Lounge near Gate E69 upstairs (this one has a small nap area).

Note that the Priority Pass lounges at Madrid airport only allow you to bring in one guest. If you don't have a Priority Pass Membership, you can pay to access the lounge -- rates range from $40 - $42.

These terminals have a large collection of shops and restaurants -- you can find the full list here . Highlights are the Mama Framboise pastry shop in T1 after passport control and the Sibarium Delicatessen for traditional Spanish products like ham, olive oil or cheese. You can also find Duty Free shops within the terminals.

A variety of services are also available in these terminals:

  • Luggage storage facilities are available in the arrival hall of both T1 and T2. Rates start at $7 per piece for up to two hours.
  • Currency exchange and ATMs are located in the arrival halls and other various spots within the terminals.
  • Play areas for children are located throughout T1 and T2. A breastfeeding lounge is available near the D gates in T2. Stroller rental is available after security in T1, T2 and T3.
  • Pharmacies are located in the public areas of both T1 and T2.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport but you have to register your name and email address.
  • Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Chapel is located in the public area of T1, and the Nuestra Señora de Loreto Chapel is in the public area of T2.
  • If you've forgotten to print your Ryanair boarding pass out and can't get it on the app, you can print it at the post office in the arrivals hall in T1.

AvGeeks should make sure to check out the miniature scale model of T2 near the D gate, while art enthusiasts should go and see a statue by Colombian artist Fernando Botero outdoors in the arrival area of T2.

Terminals 4 and 4S

T4 and T4S are the newest additions to the airport. Oneworld long-haul flights on wide-body aircraft on airlines like American, Iberia, Royal Jordanian and Qatar leave from T4S, while Iberia or British Airways flights to Milan or London leave out of T4.

To get to T4S you need to get on a short mini-train that's located within the airport. After going through security in T4, follow the signs for T4S, where you'll have to go downstairs. The train comes every couple of minutes and takes about five minutes. Once you arrive, have your passport ready as you'll need to go through passport control.

Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy UK.

There are Priority Pass lounges in both T4 and T4S:

  • T4 has Plaza Mayor Lounge near the McDonalds (Schengen flights only).
  • T4S has Neptuno Lounge on the second floor after exiting passport control (non-Schengen flights only).

There are Iberia VIP lounges in both T4 and T4S too -- both of which have been renovated. Access is limited to those flying business class on Iberia or another Oneworld carrier, or those holding Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire elite status. Those flying Iberia business class on flights longer than four hours and who hold certain Iberia (not Oneworld) elite status can also access the lounge.

  • T4 has the Dalí Premium Lounge, which is just past security.
  • T4S has the Velázquez Premium Lounge, which is just adjacent to the Duty-Free shop after passport control.
  • The Arrivals Lounge is located in the Arrivals Hall on Floor-1 near the Metro (look for Premium Air Rooms Madrid).

The Iberia Arrivals Lounge is actually located in the Premium Air Rooms Madrid , which is a "hotel" that offers 22 guest rooms available for day or overnight use. Non-Iberia elite flyers can access this space by paying either a day (this may include a shower room and breakfast) or overnight rate. Iberia elite customers or business flyers that meet the aforementioned requirements can use the space to shower or have breakfast. Breakfast and shower rates start at $55, day rates at $91 and overnight rates at $172.

T4 has many high-end shops like Carolina Herrera and MaxMara, as well as more affordable brands like Zara and Victoria's Secret, as well as a number of Duty-Free shops. For a fancier dining experience, eat sushi at Kirei by Kabuki.

T4S. Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy UK.

  • Luggage storage facilities are available in the arrival hall of T4. Rates start at $7 per piece for up to two hours.
  • Currency exchange and ATMs are located in the arrival hall and other various spots within the terminals.
  • Play areas for children are located throughout T4. Pram rental is available after security.
  • Pharmacies are located in the public area of T4 and the passenger-only area after security.
  • The Chapel of Santiago is located in the public area of T4.
  • Ensenza by SHA spa has locations in both T4 near Gate J55 and T4S near Gate S24.

Getting from the airport to the city center

It's fairly easy to get from the airport to the city center. Taxis cost a flat rate of $36 (remember, tipping taxis isn't customary in Spain), but you can usually do it for about $24 - $30 using a ride-hailing service like Uber or Cabify, depending on traffic and exact destination. The Metro system is easy to use and a one-way ticket costs $5.50, which includes the added airport supplement. You can also take the bus 200 to Avenida America for $2, or the Express Airport Bus for $6, which runs 24-hours and makes just three stops: O'Donnell, Cibeles and Atocha.

Renfe trains also have a line C1 which runs to T4 only, stopping at Fuente de la Mora, Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos and Atocha. If you hold a Renfe AVE or Larga Distancia ticket with a same-day departure or arrival, your ticket between any of the aforementioned stops to or from the airport is free. If not, a one-way ticket costs $3.

If you have a day

Madrid's Cibeles Square. Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy UK.

If you have more than a seven-hour layover, it's enough time to see Madrid and make it back in time for your next flight. Here are some ideas to spend a few hours seeing the sites of Madrid:

  • Madrid's green spaces and rooftops: Hop on the Express bus to Cibeles and get off to admire Cibeles Square. Head inside the Cibeles Palace to the rooftop, where you can enjoy views of the famous Cibeles fountain, Bank of Spain and the iconic Metropolis Building. Afterward, walk up Calle Alcalá to see the Puerta de Alcalá monument and into Retiro Park. Wander through the canopies of trees to see the lake, the Chrystal Palace (made almost entirely of glass) and the peacocks roaming the Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez. Then, stop at Florida Park, a bar/restaurant inside the park for a snack, or one of the many tapas bars along the nearby Avenida Menéndez Pelayo like Arzábal Retiro.

  • Madrid's history and architecture: Take the Renfe train to Sol, hopping out to admire the city's most central square. Then, using Google Maps, do a self-guided walking tour, starting with Plaza Mayor, where 237 balconies face a central statue of Felipe III on his horse. Continue on to the touristy-but-wonderful Mercado de San Miguel, where you can grab a snack and drink -- a cone of Iberian ham, cured Manchego cheese or Spanish olives. Then, head down Calle Mayor until you arrive at the towering Almudena Cathedral and the Palacio Real -- home to almost 3,500 rooms.

  • Madrid's art triangle: Take the Express bus to Atocha, and walk to the nearby Reina Sofia museum, home to modern-art masterpieces by Picasso and Dalí. For a more classical art experience, walk past the famous Plaza Neptuno and its epic fountain of Greek gods to the Prado Museum, where you can view works by Goya, El Greco and Velázquez. Or, visit the Thyssen-Bornemisza , which is home to an eclectic private collection of art with paintings by Caravaggio, Degas, Manet, Van Gogh and more.

  • Madrid's shopping : Take the metro, changing from the pink to the brown line at Mar de Cristal. Get off at Serrano and peruse some of Spain's most popular shops: Roberto Verino, Bimba y Lola, Uterque, Aristocrazy, Sito Murt, Lladro and more, including one of Madrid's largest Zara stores that's four floors high. Finish up with drinks and tapas at trendy food market Platea, housed in a former theatre.

If you spend the night

Madrid has a number of hotels where you can use points, and here are some of the top picks for a quick stay:

A sunset at the Hyatt Centric Madrid. Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy UK.

  • The Westin Palace Madrid is perfectly located across from the Prado Museum. Rates start at $304 or 50,000 Bonvoy points per night.
  • The Hyatt Centric is ideal for those wanting to explore the famous Gran Vía and has a rooftop overlooking the street. Rates start at $268 or 20,000 points per night.
  • The Hilton Madrid Airport is near the airport for those with a short layover -- and it has a large swimming pool. Rates start at $206 or 40,000 points per night.

For those looking for something smaller and more personal, check out these boutique hotels:

The rooftop of the Dear Hotel. Photo by Lori Zaino / The Points Guy UK.

  • The Dear Hotel has a rooftop with some of the most impressive views of Madrid. Room rates start at $142 per night.
  • The Only You Boutique is a designer hotel with chic, sophisticated decor in one of Madrid's coolest neighborhoods -- Chueca. Room rates start at $266 per night.
  • Bless Hotel Madrid features a stunning rooftop pool/bar and a secret bowling alley in the basement. Room rates start at $361 per night.
