The enigmatic palace and its gardens is one of Sintra's most visited attractions

T his enigmatic neo-Manueline (Portuguese Gothic-Renaissance) monument is a magical place of fantastic gardens, grottoes, lakes, and a well with a monumental staircase spiraling down nearly 30 meters (100 ft). It’s a fantasy turned into the palatial residence of millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (the top coffee importer of the time) in 1892, blending a variety of architectural styles in unexpected harmony .

Finally completed in 1910, both the palace and the four acres of the enchanting garden are filled with esoteric symbols, statues of mythological figures and a maze of grottoes, creating a fun experience that attracts an increasing number of visitors of all ages. The palace features an octogonal tower and is made up of five floors. Its exterior is adorned with turrets, gargoyles, and other intricately carved details, while inside it displays period furniture, an ornate fireplace, frescoes, and painted ceilings (one of them depicting the portraits of Portugal’s kings).

Quinta Da Regaleira: The Palace Of Mistery In Sintra

Quinta Da Regaleira is a beautiful palace that sits in a World Heritage protected landscape. It is located at the end of the historical centre of the town of Sintra where thousands of tourists flock to the palace every year to admire its unique architecture.

The 19th-century gothic mansion brings Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance features and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful gardens of Sintra.

Along with attractive fountains, stunning underground tunnels, and a series of hidden passages and caves; this eccentrically decorated palace is one of the most astonishing monuments of the Serra de Sintra and is definitely one you can not miss!

So why visit Quinta Da Regaleira?

Well, visiting Quinta da Regaleira, or visiting Sintra in general, is like entering a fairytale. It is pretty much the most fairytale-town you’ll ever visit and is surely one you can not miss when visiting Portugal.

Initiation Well Sintra

At the Quinta da Regaleira, one of its most fascinating features is what lies beneath the ground – a pair of wells spiralling deep within the earth.

The Initiation Well or Inverted Tower (as they call it) is one of the main attractions in Sintra. It deepens 27 metres below land and is accessed by a spiral staircase.

There are several theories of meaning to this monument. Some say that it represents that initiation rite of masonry, or it symbolises the circles of Dante’s Inferno, whilst others think it refers to Earth as the womb.

This would have to be the most stunning well you will ever see, a mysterious place that you thought only existed in fairytales.

The well was never used as an ordinary well and, in fact, it was not built to serve as a water resource at all. It was actually built for secret ceremonial purposes and has many tunnels that connect it to other monuments and caves around the park.

Right at the very bottom, you will find tunnels with stone walls that connect to other sights, such as the Portal of the Guardians, the Cascade Lake, the Imperfect and the Pit Cave in the East.

Quinta da Regaleira 1

Quinta da Regaleira is a breathtaking place to visit. The palace looks just as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside with its gothic style split over five floors.

Its architecture hides shapes and symbols that relate to the alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar and the Rosicrucians.

Another one of its main attractions is the enchanting gardens. The Regaleira gardens are styled to represent the ancient secret order, with hidden tunnels and concealed symbolism.

It is full of exotic plants and flowers along with several pathways that will lead you to mysterious places.

When was Quinta da Regaleira built?

Quinta da Regaleira Jardim

This decorative 20th-century residence has a lot of history and was built between 1898 and 1913.

The palace was constructed over 6 years in the year of 1904 by the wealthy Portuguese businessman Carvalho Monteiro, which gave rise to the residence’s local name of “Palace of the Monteiro Millionaire”.

After the death of Carvalho Monteiro, the palace was then purchased by Waldemar d’Orey. It stayed within the family until 1987, when it was bought by Japanese business for private functions.

From there, the local government of Sintra reclaimed this important national monument in 1997 and opened it to the public in 1998.

How do you get to Quinta da Regaleira?

It is a great destination where you can discover the historical wonders of this beautiful town. You can spend a few days sightseeing and visiting some of the most iconic places in Sintra.

It is extremely popular due to the Romantic architectural monuments that were created during the 19th century. Apart from the Quinta da Regaleira, other iconic places to visit are the Pena National Palace and the Castle of the Moors.

Going to Quinta da Regaleira by train:

Quinta da Regaleira is 24 km to the west of Lisbon, and the recommended and easiest form of travel is by train. Lisbon is connected to Sintra by two train services, and these convenient and inexpensive rail services make it very easy to get to.

There are frequent trains that run seven days a week and two rail routes between Lisbon to Sintra. One of them is Rossio Station which is typically used by most visitors as it departs from the historic centre of Lisbon. The journey time from Rossio station to Sintra usually takes 40 minutes.

The other service is Oriente Station which is generally used by visitors travelling from the airport, the Sete Rios bus station or Oriente station. The Oriente to Sintra route usually takes 47 minutes.

Lisbon Sintra Rome2rio

Both train services are operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP) and are important commuter routes so there are multiple hourly departures that even continue late into the night.

Quinta da Regaleira can be easily reached on foot from Sintra station. The walk takes approximately 15 minutes (just under 2km), so it is quite easy to get there.

Due to the popularity of Sintra, my advice would be to start your trip as early in the day as possible so you don’t miss out as tickets and seats cannot be pre-booked.

A single ticket from Lisbon to Sintra costs €2.25/€1.15 (adult/child), with the return fare of €4.50. You can find the pricing here at Rome2Rio .

Going to Quinta da Regaleira by bus:

If you don’t want to catch the train, there is an option to catch a bus that departs from Marquês de Pombal and takes you straight to Sintra station.

The buses operate every day and the journey takes approximately 27 minutes, but the downside is that the services depart every four hours.

You can find more information on the Vimeca Transportes website.

Or, going to Quinta da Regaleira by car:

The quickest way to get from Lisbon to Quinta da Regaleira is to travel by car. If you drive or catch a taxi, the trip will only take 25 minutes but will also cost more money.

The route from Lisbon to Sintra follows the IC19 highway, west of Lisbon, and can get very busy during rush hours as people commute in and out of Lisbon. If you’re taking the car, just note that the roads of Sintra are very narrow, and car parking is very limited.

Curious about what would be like to live in Sintra? Here’s what it’s like .

What are the prices of the Quinta da Regaleira tickets?

The Quinta da Regaleira is open between 9:30 am and 8 pm during the summer season, and 9:30 pm to 6 pm during the winter season, with the last admission 1 hour before closing time.

Yes! There are good guided tours that are available to you. The cost of a tour is €12 per person and includes the entrance fee.

You can contact the reservation services for more information about the available dates and times of the guided tours at [email protected] . It is better to book in advance.

A normal visit lasts 1.5 hours, with most of the time spent in the gardens.

When is the best time to visit Quinta da Regaleira?

To properly enjoy the palace you would need at least half a day. Otherwise, you would easily miss the little details that aren’t as noticeable, such as the secret tunnel which leads to a cave behind a man-made lake.

The best time of the year to visit Sintra is during Spring and early Autumn. At this time of the year, the days are a lot brighter and warmer but avoids the extreme heat of summer and a large number of tourists.

Sintra can get extremely busy during this busy season (July – August) with loads of tourists arriving between 10 am and 4 pm.

If you are planning to visit the Sintra region during the summer and want to avoid the crowd, try to go there early or later in the day. Weekends tend to be busier than weekdays but, don’t worry, all of the main sights of Sintra are open every day during the high season.

Sintra has a slightly different climate to Lisbon and Cascais due to its high elevation and the cool winds that blow in from the Atlantic Ocean.

It is only 15 km away from Lisbon but is always 2-5 degrees cooler which is much more noticeable during the summer.

The summer sun in Sintra is just as intense as Lisbon however the temperature is slightly cooler with a constant refreshing breeze.

Is it a good place to visit with your kids?

Of course, it is! You can take the time to really explore this unique kind of art with your kids. You can safely let the kids off the leash and let them explore this amazing place with its magical grottos and caves.

The kids would love it as it is a heaven for hide and seek. So, book your trip, pack your bags and visit the Quinta da Regaleira with your family. If you like adventure, as it will definitely be one of your highlights during your visit to Portugal.

The Ballroom is an opulent space with ornate stucco work, frescoes, and mirrors. The space was used for grand parties and events.

The Dining Room

The Dining Room is a beautifully decorated space with rich wood paneling and a stunning fireplace.

interior of Quinta da Regaleira

The Music Room

The Music Room is a beautiful and delightful space with intricate frescoes and ornate decorations. It was used as more of a ladies’ gathering room than anything else. This might be my favorite room within the palace.

The Bedrooms

The palace has several beautifully decorated bedrooms, each with its own unique style and decor.

The Library

The Library, possibly my second favorite, is a beautiful space with rich wood paneling and a collection of antique books.

Overall, the interior of the Palace at Quinta da Regaleira is a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, architecture, history, and esoteric symbolism.

Take your time and explore all the beautiful and unique features of this amazing palace.

While the palace has 6 floors, your one-way tour through them is restricted to the ground floor only. For this reason, you will spend most of your time in the gardens.

The Gardens

The gardens at Quinta da Regaleira are an absolutely beautiful and unique feature of the palace, filled with stunning architecture, winding paths, and mystical symbols.

They are a magical playground for every age and a peaceful way to spend the day. Here are some must-see spots in the gardens in my opinion.

The Initiation Well

initiation well

The Initiation Well is a unique and magnificent structure at Quinta da Regaleira that descends 9 stories into the earth. It was used for ceremonial purposes by the Freemasons, but its’ true purpose remains a mystery.

The Quinta da Regaleira Well is surrounded by symbols and references to ancient myths and esoteric traditions.

For example, the number 9, which is featured prominently in the well’s design, is associated with many mystical traditions and is said to represent completion or fulfillment.

The Initiation Well was my absolute favorite place at this estate with its incredible feat of engineering and design of the deep, spiral-well staircase leading down to the bottom.

If you don’t take a guided tour, the audio tour here is extremely helpful in truly understanding the work that went into building this and the meaning behind the symbols.

The Leda’s Cave

This cave is dedicated to the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan and features a beautiful statue of Leda and a small waterfall. The cave is surrounded by beautiful trees and plants, making it a peaceful and serene spot to relax.

The Chapel is truly an epic example of Gothic Revival architecture, with stunning stained glass windows and intricate stonework. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and features a beautiful altar surrounded by ornate decorations and frescoes.

It’s considered one of the most beautiful and unique chapels in Portugal and is a must-see destination when visiting this estate.

The lake at Quinta da Regaleira is another beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. There are so many tiny details to see here, you really should stop to rest your legs and take it all in.

The Faerie’s Fountain

This fountain is the most whimsical feature of the estate and features a statue of a winged fairy. The fountain is designed to evoke a sense of magic and enchantment, with delicate stone sculptures of fairies, mythical creatures, and water nymphs.

Legend has it that if visitors make a wish and toss a coin into the fountain, their wish will come true.

The Regaleira Tower

The Regaleira Tower is one of the tallest structures on the estate and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The Regaleira Tower is shaped like an inverted pentagram, a symbol that has been associated with the occult and esotericism.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Quinta da Regaleira is during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild, and there are fewer crowds.

During these months, you can enjoy the beautiful gardens and architecture without feeling overwhelmed by the crowds.

If you visit during the summer months (June to August), the gardens and palace will be in full bloom, but it can be very crowded, especially during peak tourist season.

You may have to wait in long lines to enter the palace or gardens, and the heat can be uncomfortable.

Whenever you choose to visit, be sure to plan ahead, book tickets in advance to avoid long wait times and arrive early in the day if possible.

Included under Sintra’s UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, this 4-hectare estate is absolutely magical.

Quinta da Regaleira had various owners over the years. In the early years, it  belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, a family of wealthy merchants from Porto.

In 1892, the family sold it to the millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, who was a Portuguese philanthropist, lawyer, and entomologist. Monteiro had a vision for an estate that would reflect his ideologies and interests. He worked with Italian architect Luigi Manini to create that vision.

The architecture Manini designed, including the quinta’s beautiful palace, drew from Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles. Work on the estate started in 1904 and was finished by 1910.

In the mid 1900s, the estate was sold to another private buyer, and it changed hands a couple times after that before eventually being sold to Sintra Town Council in 1997, and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site shortly after in 2002.

I recommend downloading it in advance to view on your phone – saves paper! This map is your best resource for navigating to all the different points of interest you’d like to see at Quinta da Regaleira.

Read on for a breakdown of all the notable sites at the estate so you can plan your visit.

Palace of Quinta da Regaleira

The Palace of Quinta da Regaleira was constructed in the early 20th century by Carvalho Monteiro, who commissioned the Italian designer Luigi Manini to build the palace in a neo-manueline style.

Inside the palace are 5 floors, but today you’re able to explore only the main floor and first floor. You’ll enter the palace through the porch, which leads first into the foyer. The entrance is carved in limestone, and in the foyer you’ll find mosaics and limestone accents.

The main floor is where you’ll find public rooms where the Monteiro family would have relaxed and entertained guests. This includes the Hunting Room, Renaissance Room, Music Room, Kings Room and Smoking Room.

Climb the staircase up to the palace’s first floor, where you can see the private bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as the playroom for children.

The Hunting Room was my favourite room in the palace. This decorated room would have served as a dining room. The highlight of the room is its massive, ornate fireplace.

The fireplace was created by sculptor Rodrigo de Castro. It depicts hunting scenes and features a huntsman at the very top. The huntsman, of course, is meant to be Monteiro, the owner who commissioned the building of the palace.

The Renaissance Room was a living room, where the palace’s family would have entertained guests. As a result, it’s also incredibly ornate.

This room is called the Renaissance Room because it was designed by Luigi Manini, in reference to the Italian Renaissance. Although it reference’s Italian art, the room includes paintings by various Portuguese artists as well.

The Music Room at Quinta Da Regaleira is where the women of Carvalho Monteiro’s family would have spent their time.

Monteiro’s wife would hang out there with her friends as well as other women of the family. I found the decor of this room very beautiful and cozy. It has a chestnut wood ceiling, and gorgeous frescoes on the walls.

The Smoking Room was exclusively for Monteiro, other men of the house, and their male friends. This is where they would go to of course, smoke and chat together. These days, the room is used to house special exhibitions.

The King’s Room was originally a billiards room. A large billiard table would have been at the center of the room for Monteiro and his companions to use. Today, the room is home to 24 portraits of the Kings and Queens of Portugal.

Gardens of Quinta da Regaleira

The gardens of the quinta are worth spending a good amount of time exploring. They’re beautifully designed and kept, with pathways that allow you to weave your way through.

While exploring the gardens, you’ll come across ponds, statues of gods and goddesses, sculptures of animals and mythical creatures, and ornate benches. Much of the imagery throughout the garden references Christianity, the Order of the Templars, Masonic, and mythological scenes.

As lovely as it is to simply wander the gardens, there are some points of interest you’ll want to make sure you see. Below is a curated list of some of those points of interest.

This small chapel is just a short walk from the palace of Quinta da Regaleira, nestled within the quinta’s gardens. Similar to the palace, the chapel was built in neo-Manueline style. Inside you’ll find Roman Catholic references to the Virgin Mary and Jesus, frescoes, stained glass windows, and stuccoes.

Leading to the palace of Quinta da Regaleira is a wide path, known as the Promenade of the Gods. It earned its name thanks to the stone statues of Venus, Hermes, Dionysus, and other Greek gods and goddesses that line the promenade.

The Initiation Well is one of the most fascinating sites at Quinta da Regaleira. Despite its name, the well isn’t really a well in the traditional sense. This is why it’s also referred to as an “inverted tower.”

The Initiation Well goes nearly 90 feet deep into the earth. It’s a wide circular staircase made up of 9 levels. You can walk the 139 step staircase all the way down to the bottom of the well (or tower), where you’ll find a compass rose printed on the bottom.

To leave the well, there’s a tunnel that guides you from the bottom of the well and back out into the garden.

The Portal of the Guardians is an ornate stone wall that features two spiral staircases which lead up to two circular turrets above the wall. There’s also a circular gazebo at the center of the wall, which makes a beautiful open air amphitheater.

I spent two nights in Sintra Town so that I could see as much of the region as possible. Quinta da Regaleira was high up on my list of palaces to see, and so I set out to visit it first thing in the morning.

I walked up to the quinta from my hostel in town, grabbing breakfast on the way. I arrived at the entrance gate and ticket office right at opening time.

It wasn’t busy at all – in part because it was morning, but also because it was late November, which is the low season for tourism in Portugal.

After showing the ticket I’d bought online at the gate, I started wandering the estate. I wasn’t pressed for time, so I followed the pathways around Quinta da Regaleira without much of a plan.

I immediately fell in love with the quinta’s beautiful gardens. Even in November, which is cooler than most of the year in Portugal, the gardens were incredibly lush. It was relaxing to walk the paths, coming across buildings and ornate garden decorations.

In my 3 hours of exploring, I of course stopped by the famous sites within the estate, like the Initiation Well and palace. These highlights were all impressive, but what I enjoyed most about Quinta da Regaleira was the gardens.

Where to Stay Near Quinta da Regaleira

Sintra is a popular day trip from Lisbon, but if you have time to spend a night (or a couple!) in Sintra, it’s well worth it. Staying in Sintra overnight will give you a more in-depth experience of this beautiful Portuguese region.

$ MouraLua is a cozy budget option for your stay in Sintra. It’s a little further out from Sintra’s main sites, but if you don’t mind walking or taking the local bus, this isn’t an issue. This guesthouse has a social common room and kitchen.

$$ Casa da Pendoa is budget friendly, and well located in the historic center. Rooms in this guesthouse are simple, but comfortable, with views of the Sintra Mountains.

$$$ Sintra Bliss Hote l is a pricier option, in part because it’s conveniently located in the historic center. This hotel is just 100 meters from Sintra train station. All rooms include a TV, AC, and an ensuite bathroom.

$$$ Sintra 1012 Boutique Guest House is a charming B&B in a restored 15th-century building in the historic center of Sintra, a 13-minute walk from Sintra station. The rooms are homey and comfortable, and breakfast is included every morning.

Close to the historic centre of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is easy to add to your Sintra itinerary, whether you’re spending just 24 hours in Sintra , or you’re in Sintra for a few nights.

Quinta da Regaleira was one of my favourite places to visit in Sintra. It tends to be a bit less busy than Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, and the quinta’s gardens are truly spectacular. Spending a morning relaxing as I explored the gardens was a great start to a busy day visiting Sintra.

I hope this guide on how to visit Quinta da Regaleira has inspired you to visit this beautiful Sintra quinta yourself! Questions? Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.

Palace Exteriors

The outside is something of an artistic labyrinth. The architecture combines elements from the Renaissance, Neo-Manueline, Egyptian, Gothic, and Moorish styles. You will find tons of gargoyles, capitals, gothic turrets, an octagonal tower, and interesting motifs, adorning the palace exteriors and rendering a mystical appearance.

Intricate Interiors of Quinta da Regaleira

Intricate interiors

Exquisitely carved fireplaces, gorgeous wooden ceilings, elaborate inlaid mosaic flooring, and Venetian glass mosaics make up the interiors of the mansion. Even though the palace has five floors, you can only visit the top floor. Formal areas like the dining room, music room, billiards room, and living room are on the first floor.

Quinta da Regaleira Gardens

Regaleira Gardens

The Regaleira garden complex at Quinta is its finest feature. It is strewn with whimsical follies. The Promenade of the Gods is located on one of the main entrances to the estate. Along this walkway are numerous stone statues of Greek deities, including Venus, Hermes, and Dionysus, some of which are entwined with flora.

Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira

The most frequented location in the garden is an Initiation Well . Allegedly used for secretive Masonic rituals, the spiral staircase leads 90 feet down into the earth's interior. The well has nine platforms, which are compared to the nine circles of Hell, the nine regions of Purgatory, and the nine heavens that create Paradise in Dante's Divine Comedy.

Garden Tunnels in Quinta da Regaleira

Garden Tunnels

A vast and mysterious network of tunnels with numerous access points, such as grottoes, the chapel, Waterfall Lake, and Leda's Cave, located beneath the Regaleira Tower, is part of the garden complex. A tunnel system beneath the Quinta da Regaleira garden can be reached from the bottom of the Initiation Well by a disguised entrance from the top.

Regaleira Chapel in Quinta da Regaleira

Regaleira Chapel

The Regaleira Chapel is located in front of the palace's main entrance. Its design is similar to the palace. The chapel's interior is lavishly ornamented with murals, stained glass windows, and elaborate stucco. Along with other religious images, the frescoes feature images of Teresa of Vila and Saint Anthony.
