There are a lot of ways to go for a long distance tour. These days, offerings are plentiful when choosing a steed to gallop your way across the country. There are even a few liter bikes that come equipped with cruise control, if you’re into that sort of thing. From dedicated six-cylinder sport tourers, to Dakar inspired adventure bikes, there has probably never been a better time to choose a touring motorcycle.

We’ve put together a list of the 10 best motorcycles for long distance riding. If you think we’ve left anything out, which is bound to happen when choosing only 10, leave them in the comments section below.

1.) KTM 1290 Super Adventure R

KTM’s lineup of what the company categorizes as Travel consists of the 690 Enduro R, 1090 Adventure R, 1290 Super Adventure S, and 1290 Super Adventure R. The two 1290s are equally set up for touring though we opted to include the R version in this list to differentiate it as not only a touring bike for long distances, but a motorcycle that will take you further than the pavement allows.

With its off-road focused 21 x 18-inch wheel combination, there are plenty of tires from street-biased to pure knobbies that you can fit onto the big Katoom. When it comes to eating up miles, the Adventure can hang with the best of them, on or off-road, with its neutral seating position and laundry list of touring features including a 6.1-gallon gas tank, adjustable windscreen, cornering LED headlight, big ‘ol TFT display from which you can view plenty of trip info, connect to your phone, and use the KTM My Ride feature, and of course, cruise control. You’d be a fool not to consider this bike for your next transcontinental excursion, unless you’re just not comfortable with a 35-inch seat height.

2.) BMW K1600GTL

Lux touring at its finest. The BMW K1600GTL exudes luxury sport touring while feeling like a precisely engineered German machine. The star of the show, the 1,649cc inline-Six, is smooth and ready to deliver a claimed 160 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque at the twist of a wrist. The GTL is equally adept on twisty canyon roads as it is gobbling up miles down the highway. The electronically adjustable suspension soaks up road irregularities with ease, providing one of the most compliant and cush rides we have experienced, all the while allowing the ride to be tailored to the pilot’s preference at the push of a button, er, wheel in the BMW’s case. Navigating through the plethora of adjustments and information is mostly done with a rolling wheel interface on the left-hand switchgear. The K1600GTL dethroned the Gold Wing in our last big touring shot, and it’s pretty easy to see why.

Ah, the Honda Gold Wing. A juggernaut in the touring market since its inception in 1975. The Gold Wing has long been held as the gold standard in touring motorcycles, providing its riders with the utmost comfort and wind protection while offering Honda’s exceptional engineering to keep the behemoth feeling much lighter than it should. Now in its newest iteration, the Gold Wing can be had with Honda’s automatic transmission, known as DCT which is particularly convenient for touring. Evans Brasfield and our dearly departed (from MO ) Sean Alexander spent quite a bit of time on the new Gold Wing, Alexander at the press launch two-up with his wife, and Brasfield on the Nuclear Tour bringing the Wing home from Texas. As Evans states in the dual-story write-up: “impressions of the Gold Wing Tour stand out as remarkably positive”. The only flack the new Wing seems to be getting is for the reduction in storage space, an odd choice for a touring bike until you consider Honda shrunk the entire machine.

Having spent a fair amount of time both solo and two-up on the Yamaha Eluder – basically the Venture sans trunk and a few features – I would be happy riding either model for months on end, of course the extra storage and backrest would be preferred for a passenger. The 1,854cc beating heart of the Yamaha Venture is addicting. The low rumbling bass coming from the exhaust is unmistakably V-twin, yet in a class of its own. The massive torque delivered smoothly through the belt drive is more than enough to pull you and your passenger up winding roads in to Yosemite or the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Though the front of this bad boy looks like a `60s muscle car, modern niceties can be found behind that monstrous nostalgic fairing in the way of a large central screen giving access to navigation, Bluetooth, trip info, Sirius XM and all sorts of other information. Also found on the big touring machine are two alternators delivering 750 watts, heated everything, four speakers with dual-zone audio control, storage cubbies all over the place, fog lights, and a security system. If you fancy yourself some V-twin touring, this is the most high tech way of doing it.

The Multistrada is Ducati’s answer for those Ducatisti looking to travel in comfort with all the raucous performance that the unrelenting Italian manufacturer has built into its bikes since the beginning. As you first flick the Multi 1260 onto its side through a corner, you’ll be amazed that a motorcycle the size of this could possibly handle so closely to its sportier counterparts – and don’t get me started on the engine. It has performance for days with torque to make it all practical or at the very least to launch you out of the tightest hairpin corners with ease. The ability to adjust the engine character and suspension coupled with the laundry list of acronyms used to describe all of the tech crammed into the Multistrada make this truly the Swiss (Italian?) army knife of Ducatis.

It’s the lightest, most agile touring bike on this list and the Turismo also comes in with the least cubic centimeters, though if you’re a fan of Italian sportbikes and intoxicating exhaust notes, the MV is worth a look. I’ve spent hundreds of miles on the Tiger touring two-up to solo riding through Jeep trails and I’ve come away very happy with the Tiger 1200. The 2018 XCa model is certainly one of the more road-biased adventure bikes, and that’s just fine because you can adjust power modes and suspension for touring or sport on road, then flip to off-road setting when the pavement ends. It’s an adjustable steed with a fantastic Triple engine and relatively maintenance-free shaft drive. The model we rode came equipped with heated seats fore and aft, heated grips, fog lights, skid plate, and a beautiful TFT display from which to read all sorts of information. One of my few gripes is the small-ish (in relation to other ADV bikes in the category) gas tank. It’s so comfortable, you could definitely keep riding further than the tank will allow.

Cruiser motorcycles have a very distinct look. Their styling is reminiscent of American bikes from the 1930s to 1960s, and the vast majority of models are equipped with a V-twin engine. The other telltale sign is a relaxed foot-forward riding position; cruisers typically have a low seat, wide handlebars, and foot pegs pushed toward the front of the bike. This layout emphasizes rider comfort, and it makes the cruiser a great option for commuting or leisure riding.

Cruiser Brands

A number of motorcycle companies offer cruisers. These include European brands like Ducati, Moto Guzzi, and Triumph. All of the Japanese "Big Four" brands sell cruisers: Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha. The long-dormant Indian motorcycle company has recently returned, and its lineup includes cruiser models as well.

That being said, no brand is more synonymous with this category than Harley-Davidson. Harley was one of the first brands to offer a cruiser motorcycle in the 1970s, and it emerged as a sales juggernaut in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Even today, Harley-Davidson has over a dozen cruiser models to choose from – far more than any other company.

Cruiser History

Today’s cruisers are largely inspired by American motorcycles from the 1930s to 1960s, such as the Harley-Davidson EL, FL, and K Model, as well as the Indian Scout and Chief. These v-twin bikes were popular among riders for their speed and comfort. Over time, they became a blank canvas for customizers, who would upgrade their bikes by swapping parts from other models, like fuel tanks, fenders, handlebars, wheels, and suspension. 

At first, this custom motorcycle scene was small, but movies like 1969’s "Easy Rider" catapulted it into the mainstream. Within a few years, all the major manufacturers began offering their own factory-built customs, using a mixture of existing parts and pieces from their lineup. These came to be known as cruisers.

The 1971 Harley-Davidson FX 1200 Super Glide is widely regarded as the first – it used parts from the FL and XL models. The FX was followed by bikes like the Kawasaki KZ900LTD, Suzuki GS-550 Low Slinger, and Triumph T140D-Special. All-new motorcycles soon arrived with similar styling, like the Yamaha Virago, Honda Shadow, and Harley-Davidson Softail.

The "power cruiser" segment evolved shortly after with the introduction of the Yamaha VMAX and its big four-cylinder engine. These bikes push the boundaries of cruiser acceleration, as well as styling and handling. Today, the power cruiser class also includes the Ducati XDiavel, Harley-Davidson FXDR 114, and Suzuki Boulevard M109R.

Should I Buy a Cruiser Motorcycle?

There are a lot of great options if you’re shopping for a cruiser motorcycle. Ultimately though, your lifestyle will dictate if a cruiser is right for you, or not.

Consider a cruiser if you plan to use a motorcycle for everyday commuting or weekend leisure riding. Cruisers typically have a softer suspension than many other motorcycle styles, and this helps to filter out bumps and dips in the road, yielding a smooth ride. Cruisers also tend to have a low seat, high and wide handlebars, and foot pegs near the front of the bike. This puts the rider in a neutral or slightly reclined position, making it more comfortable to ride long distances. The low seat also makes it easy to walk the bike when stopped or in slow-moving traffic.

On the other hand, you should skip cruisers if you plan to ride very long distances, especially at highway speeds. A touring motorcycle would be a better option, like the Honda Gold Wing or Indian Roadmaster. These bikes have a windshield and large fairings that cut the wind and reduce rider fatigue. Tourers also come standard with saddlebags, which can securely hold cargo and keep it dry.

It’s a similar story if you want a motorcycle with sharp handling. Cruisers are fine for winding around corners, but sport bikes are better at taming those turns. These compact models have an aggressive hunched-over seating position and a near-vertical front suspension, providing riders with more control over the bike. Sportbikes are also designed to lean further into turns.

Cruiser Motorcycle Prices

Buying a new cruiser motorcycle can cost anywhere from $4,400 to $24,000. The average price is about $12,100, according to our analysis. Bikes at the low end of this spectrum typically have smaller engines, and they often hail from Japanese brands like Honda and Yamaha. Paying more can get you a motorcycle with a larger engine and stronger acceleration. In some cases, this is a difference of just $2,000 to $3,000. In others, it can be two or three times that. For instance, the Triumph and Moto Guzzi brands don’t offer any cruisers for less than $11,000.

Key Cruiser Specs

There are dozens of cruiser models to choose from. Most follow a similar recipe though. Almost all cruisers are equipped with a V-twin engine, ranging in displacement from around 500 cc all the way up to 1800 cc. Today’s cruisers typically weigh between 500 and 700 pounds. Most have a seat height of between 26 and 30 inches as well, which is lower than other motorcycle styles.

Compared to the Rebel 300, stepping up to the Rebel 500 gets you a larger 471cc parallel-twin engine. Both of these models come standard with a six-speed transmission, a 2.9-gallon fuel tank, electric start, a digital gauge cluster, disc brakes, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Optional accessories include a rear passenger seat, saddlebags, and an anti-lock braking system (ABS).

2) Kawasaki Vulcan S

The Vulcan S line makes up Kawasaki’s sport cruiser option, and is powered by a liquid-cooled 649 cubic centimeters (cc) parallel-twin engine borrowed from the Ninja lineup that makes 46.3 pound-feet of torque. This bike also features a six-speed transmission, twin-piston front brakes and single-piston rear brakes, an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear tire, and a 3.7-gallon fuel tank.

3) Harley-Davidson Superlow

The Superlow Sportster has the classic Harley-Davidson look that many riders have adored for decades – a touch of chrome, a big air-cooled V-twin, and a low-slung silhouette. If that sounds like what you want in a cruiser, take this Harley for a test ride.

The Harley-Davidson Superlow (MSRP: $8,699) packs an 883 cc V-twin with 55 pound-feet of torque at a very-usable 3,750 rpm. Despite that muscle, the Superlow can still return a high 51 mpg. Standard equipment includes a five-speed transmission, a 4.5-gallon fuel tank, electric start, analog gauges, disc brakes, and staggered 18- and 17-inch alloy wheels. ABS is optional for $795.

4) Indian Scout Sixty

The Indian Scout Sixty is outfitted with a liquid-cooled 1,000 cubic centimeters V-twin engine – that’s 60 cubic inches – and it produces 78 horsepower and 65 pound-feet of torque. Standard equipment includes a five-speed transmission, a 3.3-gallon fuel tank, two-piston front brakes, single-piston rear brakes, 16-inch wheels, and a single gauge. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is available.

5) Suzuki Boulevard S40

The Suzuki Boulevard S40 is an outstanding value in the cruiser segment, and a great option for smaller and lighter riders. The S40 starts at just $5,799, making it one of the cheapest cruisers on sale. That low price doesn’t come at the expense of performance either. The S40 has an air-cooled 652 cc single-cylinder engine with plenty of power for hustling down the road. It weighs in at a manageable 381 pounds with a full tank of fuel as well. The S40’s vintage appearance is bound to turn heads. It’s a mix of black paint, chrome, and stainless steel – and the overall look is very clean. Standard features include a five-speed transmission, a 2.8-gallon fuel tank, electric start, a long two-up seat, front disc and rear drum brakes, and staggered 19- and 15-inch wire wheels.

6) Yamaha Bolt

The Bolt has a 942 cc air-cooled V-twin and a five-speed transmission. It also wears short “bobbed” fenders and a blacked-out paint scheme, giving it an aggressive and custom-built look. Standard features include a 3.4-gallon fuel tank, electric start, a digital gauge, front and rear disc brakes, and staggered 19- and 16-inch wire wheels.

7) Honda Shadow Phantom

The Honda Shadow Phantom is an interpretation of the classic American cruiser. While the Rebel looks minimalist and modern, the Shadow has a vintage look with a lot more chrome and a bigger 745 cc V-twin engine. Standard equipment includes a five-speed transmission, a 3.7-gallon fuel tank, an analog gauge, front disc and rear drum brakes, and staggered 17- and 15-inch wire wheels. The Shadow Aero ($7,599) is mechanically the same, but has different styling like longer fenders. The lightest and most affordable Softail cruiser from Harley-Davidson, the Street Bob has a 1,746 cc V-twin engine matched with a six-speed manual transmission. A low seat height helps accommodate a variety of riders, and mid-rise bars provide an upright seating position. Standard features include digital instrumentation and keyless ignition. Four-piston front and two-piston rear brakes are standard, along with a security system. ABS is optional.

9) Indian Chief Dark Horse

The base model Indian Chief Dark Horse has a six-speed transmission, a 5.5-gallon fuel tank, 16-inch alloy wheels, ABS, four-piston front brakes, two-piston rear brakes, cruise control, and keyless ignition. Unlike the Scout, the Chief’s gauge is mounted to the fuel tank. The "Dark Horse" moniker refers to the bike’s styling. It sports a matte-black paint scheme for a modern, aggressive look.

10) Honda Fury

The Honda Fury is unmistakably a chopper. Its raked front fork stretches forward, its handle bars are set high, and its seat is about as close to the wide rear wheel as it can get. All in all, it’s a real mean-looking machine. The Fury packs a 1312 cc V-twin and a five-speed transmission, as well as a 3.4-gallon fuel tank, digital gauges, an adjustable rear shock, disc brakes, and staggered 21- and 18-inch alloy wheels. Its 286 cc single-cylinder engine should plenty of punch for day-to-day commuting, but its power and throttle response likely won’t be overwhelming for new riders like some larger engines can be. The Rebel also weighs a fairly light 364 pounds, so it’s easy to keep steady when stopped or in slow traffic.

Starting at just $4,349, the V Star 250 is one of the least-expensive models in the 2020 Yamaha lineup. It’s also one of the best options for beginners. The V Star has a 249 cc air-cooled V-twin engine, which provides enough muscle for everyday riding, but delivers that power in a way that isn’t overwhelming for new riders. Yamaha rates the bike’s gas mileage at a very efficient 78 mpg. The V Star is fairly lightweight at 326 pounds as well, making it easy to keep steady when stopped or in slow traffic. Standard equipment includes a five-speed transmission, a 2.5-gallon fuel tank, analog gauges, an electric starter, front disc and rear drum brakes, and staggered 18- and 15-inch wire wheels. The V Star’s appearance is very retro-inspired, and it’s capped off with a sleek silver-and-blue paint scheme and lots of chrome accents.

Harley-Davidson Street 500

The lightest and most affordable motorcycle in the Harley-Davidson lineup, the Street 500 is the closest you’ll find to an entry-level model from the brand. It features a narrow frame and a low seat height for an easy reach, and blacked-out styling for an aggressive look. Powered by a 494 cc liquid cooled two-cylinder engine matched with a six-speed manual transmission, the Street 500 has two-piston disc brakes in the front and rear. Options include ABS and a security system.

Cruiser vs. Sport Bikes

Sport bikes are about as different from cruisers as it gets. These high-performance motorcycles are built for straight line speed and carving along switchback roads, and their appearance is inspired by road racing bikes. You can easily spot one thanks to its aerodynamic bodywork and hunched-over riding position. These aren’t exactly comfortable bikes to ride long distance.

Sport bike engines tend to differ as well. It’s common to see models with inline two-, three-, and four-cylinder engines that develop peak power high in the rev range. By comparison, the V-twin engine is a cruiser staple and these motors typically favor low-end torque. The one commonality is pricing. Both segments have a similar $4,500 to $25,000 price range.

All in all, take your needs into consideration when choosing between these motorcycles. If you want a bike for commuting or laid-back weekend riding, a cruiser is a better and comfier fit. If you want a motorcycle with razor-sharp handling that won’t see daily use or long road trips, a sport bike may be for you.

Cruiser vs. Standard Motorcycles

Standard motorcycles are good do-it-all bikes, and they offer some of the best qualities of the cruiser and sportbike categories. Generally speaking, standards have an upright riding position that is comfortable for commuting and longer trips, yet they provide nimbler handling than a lot of cruisers. You can find practically any size and type of engine fitted to a standard bike – from small single cylinders, to torquey V-twins, to high-revving three cylinders. There are also more brands and styles to choose from. Pricing for both segments is pretty similar.

Before settling on a cruiser, take a few standards for a test ride. There’s something for everyone in this diverse segment.

Cruiser vs. Touring Motorcycles

If you’re looking for a motorcycle to ride cross country, or just across the state, a tourer is the bike for you. Touring motorcycles have windscreens and fairings that make highway travel more comfortable. These bikes typically offer more-advanced features than cruisers, like navigation and infotainment systems, Bluetooth connectivity, traction control, and even air bags. Touring motorcycles also have larger fuel tanks to maximize driving range.

One of the most obvious differences is cargo-carrying ability. You can equip many cruisers with soft saddlebags (these bikes are often referred to as "baggers"). Touring bikes come standard with saddlebags though, which are typically hard-sided, lockable, and waterproof. Tourers are often optional with large trunk cases as well.

On the other hand, a cruiser is a better starting point if you don’t plan on piling on the miles. Cruisers tend to cost a lot less than comparable touring motorcycles. They usually weigh less too, making them easier to maneuver in city traffic.

Cruiser vs. Dual-Sport Motorcycles

Dual-sport motorcycles are kind of like street-legal dirt bikes. These motorcycles comply with road safety regulations – they have turn signals, brake lights, mirrors, et cetera – but they are really designed for tackling off-road terrain. You get skid plates, tires with aggressive tread, and long-travel suspension for soaking up big bumps, but not much else.

As a result, these motorcycles tend to be very lightweight and inexpensive. You can find a dozen dual-sport models for sale in the $4,500 to $7,000 price range, like the Honda CRF250L and Suzuki DR200S. Dual-sport bikes typically have smaller engine sizes as well, anywhere from 200 cc to 650 cc. This mix of low price, light weight, and relatively low power make the dual-sport an ideal option for beginners.

Dual-sport bikes aren’t for everyone though. They tend to be underpowered for highway riding. They can also feel tippy due to their higher seat height, especially for riders with short legs. If you have no interest in venturing off road – stick with a cruiser.

Electronic Throttle Valves

Electronic Cruise Control allows a desired speed (engine rpm) to be maintained with the simple press of a button. Once activated, the rider does not have to constantly apply the throttle. This reduces stress on the right hand when traveling long distances, enabling relaxed cruising and contributing to a high level of riding comfort.

Kawasaki’s fully electronic throttle actuation system enables the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results in smooth, natural engine response and the ideal engine output. The system also makes a significant contribution to reduced emissions. Electronic throttle valves also enable more precise control of electronic engine management systems like S-KTRC and KTRC, and allow the implementation of electronic systems like KLCM, Kawasaki Engine Brake Control, and Electronic Cruise Control.

ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)

K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS

Kawasaki ABS systems use front and rear wheel sensors to constantly monitor wheel speed. Should information from either of the sensors indicate that wheel lock has occurred, the ABS ECU directs the pump in the ABS unit to modulate brake fluid pressure (releasing and reapplying pressure so that traction can be regained) until normal operation resumes. ABS offers rider reassurance that contributes to greater riding enjoyment.

At its heart, K-ACT ABS is an advanced anti-lock braking system, designed to keep tires from locking up during braking. But K-ACT ABS was designed to be used on touring models weighing in excess of 300 kg (661 lb) – and that is before adding a passenger and luggage.  Complementing its standard ABS function, K-ACT ABS links the front and rear brakes. It monitors the brake force the rider is exerting at both the front and rear, and takes into consideration vehicle speed to ensure highly effective braking while maintaining chassis stability.  For example, let's say the rider pulls on the front brake lever. To keep the bike from pitching forward, the ABS ECU actuates the rear brake (via fluid pumps) to ensure that front-rear balance is maintained. Should the rider push the rear brake pedal, the system actuates the front brake as well to distribute the load more evenly so that the rear wheel does not lock up. Based on the vehicle speed, K-ACT decides the optimum hydraulic pressure to send to each caliper, ensuring that even with a heavy motorcycle, stable braking performance is possible.

The detachable windscreen is great because you can remove it when it’s hot out and enjoy as much airflow as possible, but when you need that protection, it’s easy to just clip it back on. 

The riding position is an upright, natural seating position, so rider fatigue is minimal, even on long journeys. 

The Heritage Classic is really the ultimate vintage style V-twin, merging classic style with modern performance and rider comforts.

This is the cruiser you want if you value performance along with comfort. The Milwaukee-Eight 117 packs a punch of immense power and torque for all riding scenarios. 

Along with the impressive motor, the Low Rider ST has a long, well-balanced chassis for confident stability at speed and a surprisingly agile nature in bends. 

The seat height is a little higher than other cruisers on the list, but not by much, and the seating position is still upright, comfortable, and commanding. 

The ST benefits from a frame-mounted fairing and small windscreen for adequate wind protection.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited

  • Engine: Twin-cooled, Milwaukee-Eight 114
  • Seat height: 27.2”
  • Curb weight: 932 lbs.

If you like the Gold Wing and Roadmaster but are loyal to Harleys, you can’t go wrong with the Road Glide.

The Road Glide Limited has a huge sharknose fairing with a windscreen, rider and passenger floorboards, and a comfortable back supporting rider seat, as well as a passenger seat and backrest. 

The trunk doubles as the passenger backrest, with upper arm supports and speakers built in. If the trunk doesn’t provide enough cargo space, hard saddlebags come standard. 

The handlebars are pulled back for easy reach and to complete the upright riding position. 

Harley equips the Road Glide with a complete infotainment system that includes everything you could ask for, including an AM/FM radio, weather band, phone connectivity, and intercom between rider and passenger.

The model has a wide scooped seat and the typical wide cruiser handlebars. It also comes with a tall windshield and rider floorboards.

If you are into sleek bikes that resemble the style of WW2 motorcycles, then you might consider the Honda Shadow Phantom. It’s style isn’t all that historical, it reminds me of something between old and new, kind of like a hot rod. It has the aesthetics of the old but inside is all the new tech.

It’s perfect for cruising down those routs that none else cares to ride but it’s still quite capable on the highway.

The Shadow Phantom doesn’t do much more than what most road speed limits allow. It only has a top speed of 145 km/h or 90 mph which is alright if you want to cruise, right? What this bike really needs is saddlebags and that’s about it.

Indian’s new generation 2024 Scout range is topped by the £16,095 101 Scout and it’s a worthy tribute to the late ‘20s original. It was one of most revered performance bikes of its time and the new 2024 version also has the kind of fire in its belly you’d never expect from a cruiser.

The Scout is the revived Indian’s biggest success story and accounts for nearly half the bikes they sell (over 100,000 and counting). Developed over the past three and a half years this is the Scout’s first major update in the decade since it was unveiled at the ‘14 Sturgis Rally. While the latest generation machine is new from the ground up, they haven’t stayed too far from the original’s styling, so it’s still instantly recognisable as a Scout, albeit with smoother lines.

Indian’s new 101 Scout offers a sublime mix of high performance, sharp handling, strong brakes and tech with American cruiser flair. It’ll lap up a spirited Sunday scratch, glide serenely through town, while you admire your reflection in shop windows and wow you with its glossy paintwork, attention to detail, tech and quality components. It isn’t cheap, but you’ll never feel short changed. The remaining four models in the 2024 line-all impress in their own way, whether it’s the performance of the cheaper Sport, the simple lines of the Classic, the style of the Bobber or the sophistication and practicality of the Super. The Scout range may be instantly recognisable from before, but they’ve evolved to be a highly capable and desirable cruisers. The new 101 Scout is a superb, well thought out machine that sums up just how far Indian have come since their revival.

Ride quality & brakes

Sat on plush, beautifully controlled, fully-adjustable suspension the 101 floats from corner to corner with the consummate ease of a well-sorted sportsbike and the harder you push the more it digs in. Steering is light and precise, despite having low and long chassis geometry and braking power from its twin radial Brembo caliper set up is strong and free from ABS intrusion. Adding a dab of rear brake helps the Indian rail even more confidently through corners, while sporty profile Metzeler Cruisetec tyres (16in rear, 19in front) have superb grip and light steering.

It’s easy to forget you’re sat on an American cruiser when the 101 is this good in the turns and just like Triumph and Royal Enfield, Indian have a knack of making non-sportsbikes handle. That’s no great surprise, given their successful track exploits Stateside with their wild Challenger RR dominating the King of Baggers class, FTRs cleaning up in Super Hooligan and dominance of the FTR750 in flattrack.

It sits low to the ground, too, with a seat height of just 654mm, so it’s simple for anyone to get their feet flat on the floor. Despite its weight (240kg wet, no fuel), the 101 Scout never feels bulky or unwieldy, whether you’re inching through cross town San Francisco traffic, cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway, scratching around Californian canyons, or heading down to Lidl for a light shop.

With a seat you sink into like a favourite armchair the 101 is all-day comfortable, even with its feet-forward pegs, but for those who prefer more a sportier, more conventional riding position, Indian offer mid-mounted pegs as an accessory. Ride quality is superb, but with just 76mm rear wheel travel the 101 will crash over big bumps in the road, which is why it loses out on a full 5/5.

Tech spotlight

  • Indian says the Scout is 4.5kg lighter than before, despite a new tubular steel frame that replaces the old cast aluminium item. The new frame will also be easier to cut, shut and customise for specials builders. The fuel tank is more rounded and its capacity goes up from 12.5 litres to 12.9 litres. A traditional fuel cap replaces the old flush sportsbike-type cap and the Scout is now fitted with a fuel gauge.
  • Sachs 43mm USD fully forks are reminiscent of the original BMW S1000RR’s with numbered rebound and compression adjusters on top of the fork leg.
  • Fully-adjustable piggyback shocks are made in-house and like the Classic, Sport and Super offer 76mm wheel travel. The Scout Bobber’s wheel travel is 51mm.
  • Twin 320mm discs and four piston radial Brembos are as sporty as they come. The rest of the Scout range has a single 298mm disc and twin piston caliper.
  • Hand stitched seat is stylish and comfy. All Scouts are single-seaters, except the Super Scout, but pillion seats and backrests are available as an accessory.

Think of the 101 Scout as an SP or R model and you won’t be too far off the mark, so much so that in terms of sporty cruiser rivals, the 101 Scout sits in a class of one. Its new 110bhp SpeedPlus 1250 V-twin motor catapults the Indian out of corners and it pulls hard all the way to the 9000rpm redline through its slick, widely spaced, gearbox. The 101 isn’t just quick for a cruiser, it’s a fast bike. Period. Riding the 101 Scout at any speed is a piece of apple pie. The new motor burbles away without ever being lumpy or difficult to manage, fuelling from a closed throttle is perfect and the power delivery friendly and unintimidating.

  • Indian’s new ‘1250 SpeedPlus’ engine replaces the out-going Scout’s 1130cc unit. The new 1250cc, 60-degree V-twin has new crankcases, crank, pistons, rods, cams, larger valves and flowed heads. The motor has a smoother outer finish and now it’s simpler to remove the rocker covers, which will make servicing easier and cheaper. An oil sight glass has also been added and the radiator is paired down to fit neatly between the frame’s front down tubes for a cleaner look. A new low-slung exhaust replaces the old model’s stacked twin pipes and frees up space for a bigger right pannier. The V-twin has 11% more power and 14% more torque across the rev range: 105.9bhp @ 7250rpm and 79.7lb.ft @ 6300rpm. The 101 Scout makes slightly more: 110bhp@7250rpm and 80.4lb.ft @ 6300rpm.

Reliability & build quality

Sporty pretentions aside, the 101 is a cruiser at heart and its looks will be the biggest draw for potential owners. It’s pure Americana and opening your garage door to this on a Sunday morning will never be a chore. Sure, it isn’t cheap, but the quality shines through, from its perfect fit and finish to its deep, lustrous paintwork (available in red or white). It also has huge presence, with a low-slung, feet-forward riding position, a chopped rear mudguard to show off its fat tyre and rumbly V-twin soundtrack.

There are some electronic glitches on these pre-production models MCN rode at its world launch, but Indian say they’ll be ironed-out before they hit the dealers at the end of May 2024 and there’s no reason to think otherwise. MCN’s online reviews of all Indian models are glowing when it comes reliability.

Value vs rivals

With its performance chassis part, laid back cruiser looks and high equipment level, there isn’t much to directly rival the 101 Scout. But you could say Harley Davidson get the closest with the £19,735 Low Rider S , £15,145 Sportster S .

It's well equipped and fitted with the top spec ‘Limited +Tech’ packs, as well as fully adjustable suspension, Brembos, a stitched seat, machined aluminium yokes, USB charger, LED lights, blacked-out components and 6in handlebar risers…the list goes on. Everything works as it should, although the small switchgear can be fiddly to use. The drop-down bar end mirrors give a clean look when you’re riding, they’re always full of elbows, but they can be switched and turned upright for a better view behind.

Indian are offering a host of Scout accessories: 70 new ones and 30 already on the books from the previous model. They’re split into Commuter, Open Roads, Stealth, and Overnighter packs. There are over 30 riding position possibilities and now that the Scout’s frame is identical across the range, unlike before, you can mix and match accessories. It means you could create a two-seater 101 Scout with a back rest, luggage and footboards, or add traction control and a colour dash to the Classic.

The Scout comes in three ascending trim levels: Standard: LEDs, keyed ignition, ABS, analogue display and black paint. Limited: Cruise control, ride modes (Standard, Sport), TC, USB charger and solid paint options. Limited +Tech package: 4in TFT display, keyless ignition, connected ride, solid and premium paint options.

2014: Original Indian Scout introduced 2024: 101 Scout launched. Tops Indian’s heavily revamped Scout range and as well as a new engine and chassis comes with Brembos, fully-adjustable suspension and fully loaded spec.

Other versions

The 101 is joined by another four new Scout models for 2024.. Each uses the same new chassis and 1250 motor, albeit remapped to give slightly less power than the 101 (106bhp). An A2 licence-friendly Scout Sixty is planned for the future.

Sport Scout (£13,395)

A more affordable take on the 101 Scout, the Sport is essentially the same with similar ergonomics and styling, but comes with slightly lower-spec suspension, less fork travel and a single disc front brake set up. Ride and handling aren’t quite as sophisticated, but it’s still very capable and every inch an accomplished sportsbike-meets-cruiser.

Scout Bobber (£13,195)

Swaggering with attitude the Bobber is Indian’s most popular Scout model. It has cut down mudguards, blacked-out components, a fat 16in front wheel and an even lower 649mm high seat, just 51mm of rear suspension travel suspension and a more laid-back riding position. It performs as well as the sporty Scouts, but with no wind protection and an aversion to big bumps the Scout is more for skulking through town than grinding out big miles.

Super Scout (£16,095)

Based on the Bobber, the Super Scout tourer is the easiest of all the Scouts to get on with. Bars are closer to the rider, there’s plenty of wind protection, its seat has the most back support and the ride is smoother, thanks to its extra rear wheel travel. It has chrome

finishes, is the only two-seater in the Scout line up and has the Limited +Tech pack as standard. It also comes with panniers, big enough to swallow the old Scout’s panniers.

Scout Classic (£13,395)

As the name would suggest the Classic has no ambitions to be sporty, moody or travel the world. It’s a simple Sunday morning cruiser with lots of chrome, fat mudguards and wire wheels, running a 16-incher up front. Performance is on par with the other models, but it’s built to cruise.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
