“I LOVE SURPRISES! Getting a postcard without notice gives me so much happiness! When I receive a postcard from a stranger, it makes me so happy to see that people have taken time out of their busy day to write me a thoughtful message and carefully chosen a postcard based on my likings. It makes me feel loved, even though I've never met these people! Thank you for this platform and these BEAUTIFUL people I got to connect with because of it.”

Travel Postcards From Around The World – Old & New

Table of Contents

I read an interesting article in our local 📰 newspaper a while back in the travel section. It was on how – Postcards Tell A Personal Story. It really hit home, as I’ve always collected … 🌺 Travel Postcards 🌺 From Around The World 🌎 and we still do today. When traveling to new destinations, we always like to 📬 mail a postcard home to ourselves and to close family members.

Who doesn’t like receiving a travel postcard in the 📬 mail, from a friend or family member? It’s so personal and a great keepsake as well! 😎 For us, it’s just a little souvenir from our travels with a picture, and a unique 📨 postmarked stamp included.

Travel Postcards For Memories That Last A Lifetime

Old Waikiki Hawaii Postcard

I’ve collected various postcards over the years, from travels that I was lucky enough to experience as a young boy. I’ve included a few in this post, from my first international travel experience to 🌴 Hawaii from Canada.

They are so cool to look back on today, recalling those memorable trips taken years ago!

My wife and I started 📮 mailing postcards to ourselves back in the late 1980’s. It’s fun to read what we wrote on the back to ourselves, about our adventures back then.

There’s also some of the neat looking older postmarked stamps as well on them. Below, are a few of our older postcards we’ve collected over the years.

Digital Cameras & Cellphones For Travel

Vintage Waikiki Beach Postcard

Today, the majority of us who are not professional 📸 photographers, travel with our compact digital cameras and/or 📱 cellphones, for storing or sending out our photos.

But how many of us actually take the time to prepare a photo album from our {digital images} that we’ve taken? ❓ Or even have any printed for a keepsake, to look back at years down the road.

I would venture to say – not many of us.

Visit the post office if you can in your travels and engage in conversation with the locals. You’ll be surprised how interested they are to know where you’re from, sparking at times a wonderful conversation!

For example, I always make a point to ask locals where their favorite restaurant is. We’ve discovered some amazing affordable eateries over the years, by just asking a local.

Years later, when you look back at your postcards and printed photographs, you’ll be so glad you took the time and effort to do so!

Postcards appear to be making a come back, which is great to see. It’s a way for you to tell a brief personal story of your exciting adventure. So do yourself a favor and send a postcard or two on your next journey!

These Cute Towns From Around The World Have Fairy-Tale Charm

Posted: July 23, 2023 | Last updated: July 23, 2023

From medieval chocolate-box towns to dainty villages clinging to cliff edges, plenty of real-life places look like they’ve been swept right from the pages of a fairy-tale book. Full of history, charm and plenty of unusual quirks, they all share one thing: a little magic. Join us for a virtual tour of the most wonderful fairy-tale locations on the planet.

Plucked from a fairy tale

Looking postcard-perfect in this sunset shot, Hallstatt’s cluster of pastel-colored buildings are hugged by peaks and encircled by low-lying clouds. Located in the mountainous Salzkammergut region, Hallstatt’s long history began with the discovery of salt mines in the region in prehistoric times – possibly as early as 4000 BC. Today, much of the architecture dates back to the 16th century, with the buildings painted in an array of ice-cream hues.

Hallstatt, Austria

Twinkling like a box of precious gemstones by night, the cave buildings of Göreme certainly have a magical feel. Parts of this UNESCO World Heritage settlement were hewn into the rock as early as the 4th century, when small anchorite communities began to carve out cells to live in. Many of its cave churches began to be decorated elaborately between the 10th and 12th centuries and today they’re filled with colorful figurative paintings.

It’s easy to see why the ancient city of Dubrovnik was used as a filming location for fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. With its intricate limestone streets and buildings perched on craggy cliffs, the Adriatic coast gem needs no special effects to look like a fantasy world. Medieval Albarracín is made up of a trickle of rosy-toned houses that look almost as if they’ve been poured onto the hilltop. Located in eastern-central Spain, the town’s walls and first fortress were built between the 10th and 13th centuries, while much of the Old Town, including the Cathedral of San Salvador, dates back to the 16th century. The buildings’ unique color comes from gypsum, the local material used to construct them.

The jewel in Sintra’s crown is Pena Palace, the whimsical 19th-century castle which stands watch over the settlement. Located on the northern slope of the picturesque Sintra mountains, the town was formerly used as a royal summer residence. Today, it's best known for its historic palaces, 18th-century gardens and picturesque surroundings.

Could this little alpine village be any cuter? Located in the heart of the Shogawa Valley, tucked between remote mountains, Shirakawa-gō’s characteristic steep-roofed houses are as practical as they are pretty. Built in Gassho-zukuri style (which means "constructed like hands in prayer") their rooftops are designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Pictured in winter here, illuminated by glimmering lights, it looks like a miniature fantasy world.

All but abandoned in the 1990s, the remote fishing village of Houtouwan, located on Shengshan Island off the east coast of China, has since become overgrown with ivy and foliage. With its intriguing green-carpeted buildings blending into the hillsides, it almost looks as if it’s been swallowed up by the land. While Houtouwan is largely deserted, a small number of its former population remains, making an income from intrepid tourists who come to visit.

Houtouwan, China

Surrounded by the regal-looking Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger mountains, the ski village of Grindelwald oozes with alpine charm. It began life as a ski resort from the end of the 18th century and today remains a small yet thriving destination with quaint lodges, mountaintop restaurants and cozy pubs. The village is beautiful year-round: by summer, its steep slopes are plastered in verdant green; by winter, it’s shrouded in a blanket of snow.

Rye is a charming maze of cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and medieval relics. Situated on the south coast of England, it was surrounded on all sides by water in medieval times. It was made a Cinque Port town in 1336, meaning it received tax exemptions and other privileges in return for being used for defense. Since then, Rye has been separated from the sea as the estuary has silted up, meaning it’s now around two miles (3.2km) from the coast.

Draped in snow and bathed in violet-tinged sunlight in this photograph, Hamnøy’s colorful wooden houses, stacked onto the cliffs on stilts, certainly look like the stuff of fantasy. Located on its own small island in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, Hamnøy started life as a fishing village some 1,000 years ago. Wooden cabins were used to house fishermen when they came to visit for an annual fishing event – the oldest that still stand today date back to 1890.

Hamnøy, Norway

It might not be a real settlement but Hobbiton certainly packs in the fairy-tale charm. The movie set used in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, located in New Zealand’s Waikato region, is set on a sheep farm and includes cute grass-covered “hobbit holes”. Located in picturesque farmland, Hobbiton, or “the Shire” as it’s sometimes called, gives a glimpse into the fantasy world of the iconic films.

Quedlinburg briefly served as the capital of the East Franconian German Empire during the 10th century, when it was ruled by King Heinrich I. In 936, his widow, Mathilde, founded a convent and the town was ruled by its Abbesses for the next 800 years, until Napoleon invaded in 1802. The town certainly has a mythical atmosphere, with its Romanesque castle complex soaring out of the hilltop, surrounded by a patchwork of half-timbered houses and clusters of trees. You could be forgiven for thinking that Bacharach is the set of a fantasy film. The quaint German village, situated on the bank of the Rhine, is full of medieval gems. There’s Burg Stahleck, a 12th-century castle which currently serves as a hostel; the ancient ruins of Wernerkapelle, built between 1289 and 1430; and of course the idyllic Altes Haus, built in 1368. This red-and-white timber-framed building, with its whimsical turrets and gables, looks completely frozen in time.

Bacharach, Germany

The conical-roofed, whitewashed houses of Albarello look like they’d be better suited to mythical creatures than human beings. Located in southern Italy’s Puglia region, just at the top of the boot’s heel, the town is best known for these traditional trulli buildings today. They were constructed from local limestone using a prehistoric building technique, with the oldest ones dating back to the 14th century.

The hilltop commune of Simiane la Rotonde looks especially striking during the summer, when it sits above a luxurious rug of Provençal lavender. It owes its name to the rotunda of a 12th-century castle perched at the top of the hill, which currently serves as the setting for the annual Festival of Ancient Music and numerous exhibitions. With its narrow houses stacked onto the steep slopes, the village is as quaint as you can get.

There’s something otherworldly about Ortahisar, a rustic town located in Turkey’s Cappadocia region. Its best-known feature is the historic fortress, built onto one of the region’s iconic “fairy chimneys” (rock columns), which has steadily eroded away during the past few centuries. Besides this, Ortahisar’s patchwork of stone houses and caves, melding seamlessly with the rock face, have an almost model-village feel.

In the foothills of the Atlas Mountains lies the ksar (fortified village) of Ait Ben Haddou, whose earthy red hues are lit up to majestic effect at sunset. An impressive incarnation of southern Moroccan architecture, the fortress is thought to date back to the 17th century, although it was created in the style of much earlier buildings.
There’s a fascinating story behind Júzcar’s bright blue buildings. In 2011, residents of the Andalusian village were approached by Sony Pictures, who requested to paint its whitewashed houses blue as a marketing ploy for The Smurfs movie. After some initial concerns, they agreed and the entire place was turned Smurf-blue. However, the following year, when Sony attempted to revert the village to its original white, locals refused as the Smurf connection had led to an explosion in tourism.

Painted in a joyful array of sweet-shop hues, the riverside village of Colmar is totally idyllic. Located in France’s Alsace region, near the German and Swiss borders, it’s full of historic treasures. Among them are Musée d'Unterlinden, a former convent turned museum; the home of Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who created the Statue of Liberty; and plenty of Alsatian Renaissance houses dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

Colmar, France

The small Iranian-Kurdish village of Palangan is embedded into a rock face so steep, it looks almost vertical. With a population of around 1,000, the village has been populated since the pre-Islamic period, although the houses that currently stand here were built around 500 years ago. With its vertiginous position and terraced houses blending into the mountain, it certainly looks storybook-inspired.

Palangan, Iran

This dinky town is swept up in fairy-tale magic under a blanket of snowfall. Located on a meander of the Vltava River, Český Krumlov is filled with impressive Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic architecture. Most striking of all is the 13th-century castle that the town was built around. It also has a well-preserved medieval street layout, plenty of ornate burgher houses and a town square that also dates back to the 13th century.

The next total solar eclipse will hit these two popular world travel destinations in 2026, iceland-spain eclipse in 2026.

Feeling FOMO from not traveling for the Great Texas-Indiana Eclipse of 2024? Yeah, we know. Then it's not too soon to daydream about the next total solar eclipse, coming to Iceland and Spain on Aug. 12, 2026. It makes for a tantalizing choice for travelers.

Around 5 p.m. GMT, the zone of totality will fall across western Iceland, including the acclaimed, remote Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Reykjavik region, with more than two minutes of blackout. Then the moon's shadow crosses to northern Spain, on a swath between Barcelona and Madrid, for almost two minutes of totality. It ends near sunset over the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, etc.). Eastern Greenland, far northern Russia and a sliver of Portugal will also get in on the total darkness.

Grand Marais, Minn., will see about 6% of the sun eclipsed that day; Minneapolis will see only 0.49%. The next TSEs to be visible in the continental U.S.? Set reminders for Aug. 23, 2044, and Aug. 12, 2045.

Airbnb updates cancellation policy

Airbnb is updating its Extenuating Circumstances Policy, including renaming it the Major Disruptive Events Policy. Under this updated cancellation policy, guests can cancel reservations and receive refunds in cases of "foreseeable weather events," such as hurricanes, that would result in another covered event occurring, such as large-scale utility outages. According to Travel + Leisure, the policy already applies to other unexpected major events, such as declared public health emergencies, including epidemics, but excluding COVID-19. This revised policy, which will go into effect on June 6, overrides individual hosts' own cancellation policies. This updated policy also applies to mid-trip cancellations, so travelers can receive refunds for the unused portion of their stays in the event of a covered cancellation.

Rock star Sammy Hagar is opening

Sammy Hagar in Vegas

Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar is setting up Sammy's Island at the Palms Pool in Las Vegas, opening May 17. Its signature party platform is the island in the middle of the deck, encircled by pools, cabanas and revelers on deck chairs. Such hits as "I Can't Drive 55," "Right Now," and "Why Can't This Be Love" will emanate from the spot. Sammy's Island is essentially Hagar's famously free-spirited personality adapted to Vegas. The Palms Pool's tropical vibe fits the Captain of Cabo Wabo's general concept to build a rock-party oasis similar to his buoyant beachside birthday parties. "I'm not a big planner. I'm a big thinker. So I just started thinking, let's build something with a Cabo Wabo theme, and have everything I would ever want in one place," Hagar said. "So we created that."

Want to buy a $1 home in Italy? The best advice from 3 people who did it

thumbnail

For years now, people around the world have been captivated by Sicilian towns selling off abandoned homes starting at 1 euro , or roughly $1.08.

Several hundred homes have been sold to curious and ambitious renovators, including Meredith Tabbone, 44, of Chicago. She learned in 2019 that a town called Sambuca di Sicilia was auctioning off homes starting with 1-euro bids.

"A lot of people warned me that it could be a scam [and that] I could end up losing a lot of money," she tells CNBC Make It.

Still, she took up the idea when she realized her great-grandfather was actually from Sambuca. She placed her bid on a home for 5,555 euros sight unseen and won, thus starting her on a four-year journey of renovations.

"From the moment that I sent in the bid and checked my email every day and found out that I won, all the way through this process, there have been 4 million moments of frustration, exhaustion, contemplation of how to move forward," she says.

Tabbone and other 1-euro homebuyers share their biggest pieces of advice to other aspiring renovators around the world.

Prepare for additional costs

Sicily's homes may start at 1 euro, but the cost is largely symbolic and just the start of more expenses down the line.

In Mussomeli, one of the most famous 1-euro towns, buyers must also pay a realtors fee of 500 euros and pay for the deed, which costs 2,800 euros. That adds up to a total of 3,301 euros, or nearly $3,600.

Rubia Daniels, 50, of Berkeley, Calif., bought three 1-euro homes in Mussomeli in 2019. So far, she's focused her efforts on renovating her main vacation home. She originally thought it would cost her $20,000 but has already spent $35,000 between materials, labor and furniture. She hopes to stay under $40,000.

Tabbone paid 5,555 euros for her home, plus some taxes and fees, bringing the home sale up to 5,900 euros, or roughly $6,400. She then bought the building next door through a private sale with the owner for 22,000 euros, or nearly $24,000.

Over the next four years, Tabbone spent about 425,000 euros on renovations, or roughly $463,000. Altogether, that adds up to 430,900 euros, or $469,500 for her dream home in Sicily.

Be present for renovations

Speaking of renovations, though communicating with local construction workers can kick off plans, buyers say it's crucial to be on the ground while work is being done.

Danny McCubbin, an Australian native who bought a 1-euro house in Mussomeli, says he's seen "quite a few" foreigners try to manage their project from their home country.

McCubbin bought his cheap Sicilian home in 2019 with hopes to turn it into a food-rescue charity. He ended up selling his house back to the real estate agency after it experienced extensive, and costly, water damage. But he managed to open his charity, The Good Kitchen, elsewhere in town.

"It's best to actually be here with the builder, choosing the tiles, choosing whatever you need," he says. For the times you can't be there in-person, he also recommends finding a local project manager who can speak English and Italian to communicate plans with the local crew.

Have patience

Daniels works in construction and learned quickly that things in Sicily take much longer than they do in the U.S.

"Working with contractors in Sicily, I had to learn how to set my expectations, but not my American expectations," she says.

Have patience to understand the culture and how business is done so you don't get frustrated, she adds. She's been renovating her main home in Mussomeli on and off since 2020 and is still several months from finishing.

"Overall, there's plenty capable people to do the work," Daniels says, but "the work here, it flows in a different way. You have to remember this is an island and they are in an island time. So [things] just move a little bit slower than what you expect."

Visit in the winter

If you're planning to buy real estate in another country, it's best to spend a good amount of time there. And don't only go when it's peak travel season.

"I always say come for longer than one or two weeks," McCubbin says. "And most importantly, come in winter. In summertime it's beautiful. It's sunny, the houses, there's no mold in them. You discover in winter that a lot of these houses do have mold. They do have moisture, and it's a very different feel here than in summer."

Learn the language

Tabbone, Daniels and McCubbin agree that it's crucial to learn Italian in order to really get around Sicily, especially if you plan to spend part of your year there.

Language-learning apps and courses are a good place to start, but immersing yourself among locals is another great way to practice.

Tabbone says she enjoys spending time with Sicilians when she visits. Her first friends in Sambuca included members of the construction crew on her project, who then introduced her to their friends and family members. She also has a close relationship with the town's mayor — she practices her Italian with him and he practices his English with her.

"I think I would be extremely fluent in Italian if Google Translate did not exist," she jokes, "but I'm very, very proficient at Google Translate."

Don't be lured just by cheap houses

Newcomers to Sicily may be attracted by inexpensive houses, but many say their biggest reason for staying is the people they meet along the way.

"I always say, don't be allured by the fact that the houses are cheap," McCubbin says. "Think about where you want to be and where you want to spend your time. Having said that, people here are kind. People here are very friendly. It's a great place to live." McCubbin now lives in Mussomeli full-time and owns another house there.

Tabbone says one of her favorite things about Sambuca is how she can connect with fellow foreigners as well as long-time residents.

"One of the things that I love the most about Sambuca is that the community is not just expats who are moving here. It's really well intertwined with the locals and the community. Any dinner party that you go to, even if you just go to a cafe on the street, you will always see a very nice mixture of expats and of locals, and I love that."

Postcards from the World

About Postcards from the World

travel postcards from around the world

Welcome to Postcards from the World

My name is Anna and I am from Poland. After finishing high school I moved to bonnie Scotland, where I got my psychology and psychotherapy degree. I knew that travelling needs to be a big part of my life, I also knew that I want to study, learn new languages and discover other cultures. While working hard to get my degree in Scotland and having 3 different jobs, I managed to save up for my short and long travels. I started by going away to Europe for long weekend gateways to recharge the batteries while planning bigger escapes. I organized my work and university assignments a way that would allow me to take a week or two off and travel every few weeks. While my colleagues were going out at weekends, I was working or going away .

One summer my wanderlust took me to a conservatory volunteering program in Tobago to ‘look after’ sea turtles. Unlike the other volunteers, I went there privately on my own and not as a part of an organized group. I stayed with locals, I ate with locals and discovered the island with no rush. This exceptional experience left me with an even bigger itch on my feet.

After a few good years of enjoying Scottish weather (and jumping on a plane to other sides of the globe to catch some sunbeams) and after enjoying haggis, nips and tatties, I moved to Spain, then Chile. Soon, I guess, I will move to another country, learn another language, get more professional experience and fall in love with more places. I strongly believe that travelling, studying and working at the same time is possible. I did that for 9 years. How? I figured out my priorities and what makes me happy…then I worked to make them happen. Now I can travel even more having finished my university education…for now.

How did I start Postcards from the World? And why?

After quitting my job and moving to Chile I felt a bit lost. Being always rather active and creative, busy with studies, work, belly dance and jewellery making, I was trying to find a way to keep my creative side satisfied. My web design skills, social media and marketing were not too great and I did not have much confidence to start a blog, although I had been thinking about for a while. Then one day it just happened, Postcards from the World were created.

I wanted to write about my travels, experiences of living a constant expat life and that we can all be dreamers and make our wishes come true. I am not a constant traveller, I am not a luxury traveller nor a backpacker. I do a bit of all of it, whatever I feel like doing. I love food and blending with the locals to see life in another country from their own perspective.

Inspire and be inspired

I would love to invite you, my lovely readers, also to share little pieces of our beautiful world by sending us a postcard. I believe that sharing travel stories is very much inspirational and an amazing experience in itself. I modestly hope that some of you get inspired by the stories I share, but I am also grateful for all the stories you share with me. Hopefully, this blog will give some tips and ideas to all who love exploring, eating and learning. Along with my voyaging, I will try to share ideas on what to see, where to eat or how to cope with cultural differences.

I am writing while working, learning and travelling. This sometimes does not leave me as much time as I would like or maybe I am flamingo watching in the Chilean Altiplano or adventuring in the salt deserts. The beauty of it comes with lack of internet, so if you ever wonder what I am to those days, you can find me on Twitter , Instagram and Facebook .

Human waste could soon be used to fuel air travel

"We're turning sewage into jet fuel," said biofuel company Firefly's chief executive, James Hygate. The company expects to begin supplying the lower carbon fuel from around 2028.

Wizz Air announced a new aspiration to power 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. Pic: Reuters

Human waste could soon be used to fuel air travel, following the announcement of a world-first factory.

Biofuel company Firefly said it would develop a plant in Harwich, Essex , to convert sewage into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

It said it expects to begin supplying the lower carbon fuel from around 2028 and has reached an agreement with Wizz Air to provide up to 525,000 tonnes of SAF over 15 years.

Utility company Anglian Water has committed to providing biosolids, a product of its wastewater treatment process, to Firefly for an initial pilot SAF facility.

SAF is made from sustainable sources, meaning its production involves using around 70% less carbon than conventional jet fuel.

It can be used in a maximum blend of 50% with kerosene without the need for any modifications to jet engines.

However, SAF is currently several times more expensive to produce than conventional jet fuel.

Firefly chief executive James Hygate said biosolids are "kind of disgusting stuff" but "an amazing resource".

"We're turning sewage into jet fuel. I can't really think of many things that are cooler than that," he said.

Paul Hilditch, the company's chief operating officer, said: "There's enough biosolids in the UK for more than 200,000 tonnes of SAF.

"That's enough to satisfy about half of the mandated SAF demand in 2030.

"We're not the only answer - we need the other routes to SAF - but this new route to SAF has the potential to move the needle, it has the potential to be a significant contribution to UK Saf supply.

"And not just the UK of course. Anywhere in the world where there are people, there's poo."

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
