Top tips to consider when booking a car rental.
Whether you're embarking on a cross-country adventure or exploring a new destination by car, finding the right car rental vehicle is essential for a stress-free journey. Here are some rental car tips to help you score the best deals and hit the open road with confidence.
How to book a car rental for your next trip?
To start the easy process of booking car rentals through Expedia, simply enter your desired location along with the dates and times for pickup and drop-off. Alternatively, browse our selection of popular rental car types and destinations if you need some inspiration. Whether you’re looking for a convertible car rental for you and your partner or a passenger van rental for the whole family, we have a wide variety of rent a car options available that can have you riding with efficiency and style.
What kind of cars are available for rent?
An SUV car rentals in Los Angeles , for example, can be a great option for those in town on business or just wanting to explore the city in comfort and style. Opt for a convertible car rentals in Fort Lauderdale , if you’re traveling for the sunshine. Those venturing to LAS can go with a luxury car in Las Vegas to get themselves a premium car rental experience. A vast array of car types are available from several different suppliers, allowing you to customize your search and find the rental that best suits your vacation type.
How much does it cost to rent a car?
The cost of rental cars varies widely based on several factors, like the class of car selected and the location where you’re renting. A one-way car rental tends to be a bit more expensive than a round-trip car rental. More luxurious cars tend to cost more, and busier areas are typically more expensive to rent in. Of course, travelers may opt for certain add-ons or protection policies that can also increase costs. If you're looking for deals, check the Exclusive Offers section of the filter list to find the lowest-priced car rentals. You can also sort your search results by price and set filters for budget limitations along with any other filters you find applicable.
How do I find a cheap car rental?
Finding a cheap car rental requires travelers to take advantage of search filters and pricing trends. Within your search, apply filters for your budgetary limits in the “total price” section of the filter list. Additionally, pay attention to the other filters, as they come with low-price limits for each. For example, in the Car type section, you’ll typically find that the low-price estimate listed for the economy car rentals is far less than the starting price for the premium car rentals .
What type of car is the cheapest to rent?
Economy cars tend to be the cheapest car rental most of the time, but there are exceptions to this trend. In general, the larger and more luxurious the car rental, the more expensive it's going to be overall. It's also important to consider where you're renting a car. Rental cars at the airport tend to be more expensive than rentals closer to downtown even for the exact same kind of car.
Where can I rent a car?
Rental cars are available from various places in your destination, including near your hotel or downtown or at the airport, such as car rentals at Logan International Airport . There are search filters available that let you choose the specific neighborhood where you need to find your rental car as well. The companies that are available for car rentals will vary based on where you’re traveling, but some of the most notable are Enterprise , Hertz , and Avis car rentals . You can filter based on which company you prefer in the Rental car company section of the search filters, allowing you to search specifically for something like Avis car rentals in Chicago if you like. In terms of cities, virtually every destination has rental cars available. The best places to rent a car tend to be larger cities where you may want to get around faster than public transportation will allow. Some of the best locations to rent a car include car rentals near Disneyland or car rentals in Phoenix .
Is it worth it to rent a car?
Travelers will find several advantages to renting a car, including having an easy way to travel that's faster than public transportation and the ability to feel more like a local. This also comes in handy when you're in a place that doesn't have that many taxis or you plan on traveling a lot to the point where taxis would be too expensive or impractical. Planning your vacation itinerary is easier since your transportation is taken care of in advance, rather than having to factor in train lines or bus routes. Whether you're on a business trip or traveling with the whole family, you have a stress-free way to get from place to place.
How do I get a good deal on a rental car?
The easiest way to get a good deal on a rental car is to use our filters. At the top of the filter list, you'll find a section featuring our best car rental offers. Check the filter for "Great Deal," and your search results will be filled with specials. Of course, you may also use filters for special features you want in the car alongside filters for the cost to see what kind of rentals are available that have the characteristics you want for your budget.
Do I need insurance to rent a car?
No, you don’t need personal auto insurance to rent a car in most cases. You will, however, be required to purchase some insurance to cover the duration of the rental. Rental companies will offer this insurance when you rent the car. Certain personal car insurance policies can also be applied to rental cars, and travelers can even use non-owner car insurance if they rent cars often but don’t have a car of their own. Additionally, some car rentals simply include rental car insurance within the price of the rental. You can check the exact insurance policy on any rental by clicking the "View rules and restrictions" link in the rental policies section.
Can I rent a car with a debit card?
Yes, many rental car companies do allow travelers to rent cars with a debit card. A debit card incurs greater risk to the company, however, so it’s not uncommon for them to make the process a bit more involved compared to paying with a credit card since they can’t bill a debit card on file without you present. Prepaid cards are almost always out of the question, so you’ll need a bank-issued debit card in most cases. Additionally, they may require proof of insurance, extra forms of ID, a credit check, and a deposit, among other requirements. Using a credit card to cover your deposit is the easiest way to not tie up your cash flow.
Can I rent a car at 18 years of age?
In some cases, 18-year-olds can rent a car, but that’s often not allowed in most locations in North America. In Michigan, Quebec, and New York, however, the minimum legal age to rent a car is 18. In places like Alabama and Nebraska, the minimum age is 19. Just about everywhere else in the US and Canada, the minimum age is 20.
Can I book a long-term car rental?
Yes, long-term car rentals are available on Expedia. These rentals are designed for people who plan to rent for several weeks or even several months at a time. Simply enter how long you need the rental for, and the available options for those dates will appear in your search.
Are car rentals fully refundable?
Some car rentals are fully refundable. Each one that qualifies will be marked as such in green text on the search results page. You may also filter for this feature specifically.

Rental-Car Prices Are Far Lower. Here’s Where You Can Save Money.
Gone are the days where renting a car meant spending upward of $80 or even $100 a day—if you could even find a car.
Nationally, the cost to rent a car has fallen, online travel agencies and leisure-industry analysts say. Car-rental prices are averaging $38 a day nationwide, according to travel-search company Hopper. That’s down 8% from last year, or $3. It’s a significant turnaround for travelers, who just a few years ago witnessed prices soar roughly 80% higher than prepandemic levels for a car.
Taking a vacation is still more expensive than it was before the pandemic, with hotel prices and many other parts of the travel experience rising. But travelers are less likely to run into the sticker shock that came with car rentals in recent years, and don’t need to fear that the agency will run out of cars.
“It’s one of the few areas in travel where there’s actually a little bit of price relief for the consumer,” says John Healy, an analyst at Northcoast Research, an equity research company.
Helping mitigate the rental-car issues seen in recent years is a greater supply of new cars. This has enabled rental-car agencies to maintain or grow their fleets to account for higher demand. And the expansion of upstart companies like Sixt and Turo has added competition in popular markets, offering travelers more opportunities to save money.
These improvements are occurring across the country, industry analysts say. Even markets like Hawaii, where a few years ago travelers reported renting U-Hauls amid a rental-car shortage, have more cars to go around and lower prices.
According to Priceline, the national average daily rate to rent a car in April is $65, down about 1.5% from a year ago. Prices have fallen more steeply in some popular markets.
On average, a rental car costs around $61 a day in Boston in April, down nearly 28% from a year ago, Priceline’s data show. During that same time frame, daily rental-car rates dropped about 26% in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and more than 16% in Orlando, Fla.
Here come reinforcements
The biggest driving force behind the drop in rental-car prices is the fresh supply of new vehicles. Clogs in the supply-chain and a global chip shortage a few years ago sharply reduced the number of new vehicles on the market.
That supply crunch coincided with a return to robust travel demand. Agencies regularly ran out of cars to rent, and often kept cars in their fleet longer than usual.
As of February, the supply of new vehicles across the auto industry had risen to the highest level since June 2020, according to a report from Cox Automotive. And the average transaction price of a new vehicle was down 4% over the past year as of January, according to Kelley Blue Book. Rental agencies are passing those savings on to travelers.
With automakers selling more cars, rental agencies are replenishing their fleets. That’s led to major improvements in terms of customer satisfaction, says Michael Taylor, practice lead for travel intelligence at J.D. Power. The cars being rented out are generally cleaner and in better condition, and waits to pick up cars have improved now that there are more to go around, he says.
Particularly during off-peak periods—think Florida in mid-May—discounts are easier to find now compared with a couple of years ago, says Chris Woronka, lodging and leisure analyst at Deutsche Bank. (You should still watch out for costly fees.)
More options for lower prices
The rental-car market is expanding, reflecting the growth of newer entrants to the industry. These companies are far smaller than Enterprise, Avis, Budget and Hertz, Priceline Chief Executive Brett Keller says, but could still benefit anyone planning a getaway.
“Any cars being added to the network is a good thing,” he says.
German rental company Sixt operates 100 rental stations across 22 states. Sixt launched in Pittsburgh in February and several markets last year, including Vail, Colo.
Companies like Turo and Getaround are aiming to upend the traditional rental-car model by bringing an Airbnb-style approach to the market.
Woronka has one caveat for travelers: While the cost to rent a car has improved in recent months, it remains more expensive than it was before the pandemic, especially during peak travel periods.
“We could see prices firm up again,” he says.

Rental Car FAQs
Renting a car through Costco Travel’s Low Price Finder™ is a fast and easy way to save money on your next car rental. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from Costco members.
For additional rental car FAQs, click here.
Know Before You Rent a Car
Before you sign the contract at the counter.
- Make sure you read the Rental Agreement
- Ask about any extra charges, for example insurance, optional equipment, tolls, gas, etc.
- If you see anything you don't understand, ask the rental car representative assisting you
- Be aware that any changes to your reservation can affect pricing
Refueling Options
- Pay in Advance: You can pay in advance for a tank of fuel at the counter when you check in. This is the most convenient option as you are then free to bring back the car empty. Credit is not given for unused fuel
- Self Refueling: Plan to stop for gas on the way back. You will need to keep your receipt and provide upon drop off to avoid any refueling charge
Change or Cancel Rental Car Reservation
Q: how do i change or cancel my rental car reservation.
To make a change online:
- Book and confirm a new reservation.
- Cancel the previous reservation.
To cancel online:
- Log in to your Costco Travel account in top menu bar.
- Select the Current booking you wish to cancel.
- Near the top click on "Cancel".
- Click yes, when the pop-up message asks to confirm cancelation.
- Confirmation of your cancelation will be emailed to you.
- There is no charge for canceling an online rental car reservation.
Q: Do cancelation fees apply?
No. Reservations made online at Costco Travel may be canceled by logging in and selecting “Your Account” or by calling the car company directly. Please note if you reserved a car via the phone and it is a prepay rate you may be subject to a cancelation fee.
Q: Can I change or cancel my vacation package or cruise?
To change or cancel your vacation package or cruise reservation, please call Costco Travel and provide your booking number. Cancelation fees may apply to vacation packages and cruises.
Costco Travel Account
Q: why am i having problems logging into my costco travel account.
There could be many reasons why you are unable to log in. Please check the following:
- Make sure you are using your Costco Travel account password. (It may be different than your Costco.com password.)
- Verify you’ve entered your membership number correctly (your spouse will have a separate number).
- If your Costco membership number changed recently please call 1-866-921-7925 to have your Costco Travel account updated. Re-issued credit cards sometimes create new membership numbers.
- If you continue to have issues try logging in without an account. We will save all your booking and trip information for the next time you log in to your account.
Q: Can I use the same account that I use when shopping on Costco.com?
Your Costco Travel account is different and requires a separate registration. After you’ve registered, you can log in to your profile at any time to view your bookings and print itineraries.
Q: Can I purchase without logging into my account?
Yes. You may purchase without logging in by providing your valid membership number and last name. Just select “Continue Without an Account” on the login page.
Low Price Finder Search
Q: why do i get this error message “for the time and/or date searched, all locations are either closed or all cars are sold out.”.
Most likely you’ve entered in a time that is too early or late for that location. Some city locations and smaller airports are not open 24 hours.
Q: I’m looking for a minivan or a full size van and it is not listed, what are my options?
The location might be sold out or not carry that type of vehicle. You can try different times/dates or another location. Some vehicles (like pickup trucks) must be booked directly with the rental car company, please call 1-866-921-7925, option 1.
Q: If there is a specific color/make/model of car I want, can I request it?
The color, make, and model are based on availability at the time of pickup and cannot be guaranteed at the time of booking. If there are multiple models under the same car classification, car companies will state the most popular model followed by “or similar.” For example, an intermediate car with Avis will be a “Chevrolet Cruze or similar.”
Applicable Discounts
Q: how do i know if my costco member discount is included and if i’m receiving the best rate possible.
All prices will reflect applicable Costco member discounts and coupons, plus any taxes and fees. Our Low Price Finder will automatically calculate the best applicable coupon combinable with the Costco member discount, based on the length of rental, car type, location, reservation and travel dates.
Q: I selected a specific coupon to price, but I’m receiving a different one. Why did it change?
Costco Travel ensures the best value for every rental car. If, for example, a “Free Single Upgrade” coupon is selected, then a five-day rental period is specified, another coupon will override the upgrade if the price is lower per car category.
Q: Does my rental waive the additional driver fee?
Yes. For Alamo and Enterprise, the additional driver fee is waived for rental in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland and Spain. For Avis and Budget, the fee is waived for rentals in the U.S.
The additional driver must meet all renter requirements, appear at the rental counter with the primary renter, present a valid driver's license and present a major credit card in their name at the time of rental (they do not need a valid membership card).
Payment Options
Q: do i need any payment information to reserve the car.
No, a credit card is not required to reserve a car online at Costco Travel.
Q: What credit card is required at time of pickup?
A major credit card must be presented at time of rental pickup. Occasionally during pickup, monetary holds are placed on credit cards for rentals above a certain price. For specific types of cards accepted and inquiries regarding hold amounts, it is suggested that you contact the car company location directly. (The phone number is listed on your invoice.)
Q: Can I rent with a debit card instead of a credit card?
Debit cards are accepted at some locations with specific terms. Please contact the rental location for all information.
Q: Do I have to verify my membership to reserve a car?
Yes, as with everything Costco sells, only Costco members are entitled to the savings and value. You will need a valid membership number to book online or when calling to speak to a rental car representative.
Q: Does the primary driver have to be a Costco member?
Yes, at the time of car pick up the rental car agent may ask to see the primary driver’s Costco membership card.
Q: Can I reserve a car for a friend or family member?
Yes, if the primary driver has a valid membership card to show at time of pickup. (Note: The primary driver is not required to be the member who logged in and reserved online, but they must have their own membership card to present at time of pickup.)
Q: Do I receive emails from Costco Travel after I reserve a car?
Yes. Immediately after the car is reserved, a confirmation email is sent to the email address provided during the booking process. In addition, a final confirmation is sent four days prior to pick up. If no email is found in your inbox, check the junk or spam folder for a message from [email protected].
Q: Can I view my reservation on the rental car company’s website?
Yes. After making the reservation, you will receive an email with a confirmation number in the upper right-hand corner. This will be the number you use to view your reservation on the car company’s website.
Q: When I call Costco Travel and select a rental car company from the automated menu, am I speaking to a Costco employee?
Once you select a specific rental car company, your call is directed to a dedicated representative from that rental company. The representative may state, “Welcome to Budget for Costco members,” for example. That representative is an expert on their company’s inventory and policies, and also has been thoroughly trained on all applicable Costco member discounts and benefits. You might be offered prepaid rates from Avis and Budget, but those are not required to finalize the reservation. (To be directed back to Costco Travel, dial 1-866-921-7925.)
Q: Are car rental prices based off of a 24-hour rental period?
No. Rates fluctuate based on demand, availability and marketplace forces. There is no exact method to determining a rate. However, rates generally revolve around daily (up to four days, Monday through Wednesday); weekend (up to four days, Thursday through Sunday); weekly (five to 20+ days); and monthly rates (28 days or more). To find the best rate, you should select based on travel needs, and then adjust different pick up/drop-off days and times accordingly. Please note: Any change to pick up/drop-off time or date could increase the cost of the rental.
Q: Can prices be lower for a higher car category (e.g.: full-size versus intermediate)?
Just as there is no set method in determining a rate due to demand, availability and marketplace forces, the same applies to car categories. A certain location may have less inventory of an intermediate car due to demand, thus making a full-size car more reasonably priced.
Q: I am younger than 25 and want to book a car with Costco Travel, but the website shows an error message and will not allow me to see rates. How do I confirm a reservation with the Costco member discount?
Drivers younger than 25 still receive the Costco Member Discount, but may incur an Underage Driver Fee and must book directly with the rental company at 1-866-921-7925, option 1. The fee varies by company and location, and Costco Travel does not have the ability to determine the underage driver fee for each location.
Q: Does my rental include unlimited miles?
Many locations provide unlimited mileage; however, it depends on the specific location and rental car company. To view mileage or geographic restrictions, please refer to the “Geographic Restrictions/Mileage Rule” bullet to the left of the selected car on the rental car grid.
Q: What types of rentals are not supported through the Costco Travel website?
For all car companies, Costco Travel does not support picking up at a neighborhood location and dropping off at a different neighborhood location. If this type of rental is needed, call 1-866-921-7925, option 1 for car rentals, and then select the rental car company you’re interested in.
Q: Are there extra fees for one-way rentals?
There are drop fees or a higher rate for one-way rentals, but they are included in the base rate. A breakdown is not provided. You will not have to pay an extra fee at the location itself.
Q: Can I rent a car for longer than 30 days?
Avis and Budget: Yes you can rent a car for longer than 30 days. For more information please refer to the terms and conditions of the rental or speak with the location agent or manager.
Enterprise and Alamo: Yes, you can rent a car for longer than 30 days. For reservations that exceed thirty (30) days, the renter may be required to return the rental vehicle to a location for a vehicle inspection.
Q: Can my rental price change once it is reserved?
Base rates do not change, but taxes are subject to change. Since there is no payment at the time of booking, taxes can fluctuate until the car is picked up. Any tax fluctuations are outside the control of Costco Travel.
Q: Are prepay rates available?
We do not offer prepay rates online as they require payment at the time of booking and change or cancel fees may apply. Prepaid rates are available through Avis and Budget directly. The Costco member discount and/or coupon codes must be applied, and members are subject to the prepay terms listed by the rental car company at time of booking. The Costco member discount and coupons are not combinable with Alamo prepaid rates
Q: Is there a drop-off grace period?
Yes, as determined by the rental company. Please check directly with the location to know all rental parameters.
Q: Can I add a loyalty number?
Loyalty numbers can be entered for Avis, Budget, and Enterprise on Costco Travel’s website before finalizing the reservation.
Q: Can insurance be added to the rental?
Optional insurance through the car rental company is available. It is the same price whether it is prepurchased by phone or added at the time of pickup. For information, you must contact the car company directly. Some credit card companies offer rental insurance, including the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, so check with your credit card company for terms and conditions. For questions about the rental car insurance benefit from Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, you can call 1-866-918-4670 24/7/365 or call collect internationally at 1-312-356-7839.
Q: How can I speak to a Costco Travel representative?
Reservation experts are available to assist you Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Pacific Time. For rental cars, call 1-866-921-7925.
Q: Can I rent a car anywhere in the world through Costco Travel?
Rentals are offered in Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S., including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Using a travel rewards credit card has long been celebrated as an easy strategy to travel the world for less. Consumers can apply for rewards credit cards and earn points and miles on everyday spending, then redeem rewards for airfare, hotel stays, rental cars and more.
The annual fees travel cards often charge can be worth it if you use the benefits you receive, but not everyone wants to pay a fee to hold a card. Fortunately, many travel credit cards offer benefits for no annual fee.

Here’s a Summary of the Best No-Annual-Fee Travel Credit Cards
More about the best no-annual-fee travel credit cards.
Navigating the world of credit cards means finding the combination of pros and cons that offer the best value for your needs. A card rewarding your unique spending habits and goals will outperform one that is seemingly best for the average consumer, so make sure to evaluate each card for your specific uses.
Be aware that cards with no annual fee often charge other types of fees. In addition to interest charges incurred when a balance is carried, cardholders may also face penalty charges, including over-limit fees and late payment fees, as well as fees for foreign transactions, cash advances and balance transfers.
If you’re looking for a cash-back credit card and want the option to redeem points for travel, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ * may be exactly what you need. This card lets you earn a strong base rate of rewards for each dollar you spend, and you can redeem points for cash back, statement credits, gift cards, merchandise or travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal.
Welcome bonus: Earn a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Plus, earn 5% cash back on combined gas station and grocery store purchases (excluding Target and Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.

Other benefits and drawbacks: The Chase Freedom Flex℠ * may be marketed as a cash-back credit card, but you can redeem rewards for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. Since you can also redeem your rewards for statement credits at a rate of 1 cent per point, you can cover travel purchases charged to your card as well.
This card paired with a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card can provide extra leverage as points are worth 1.25 to 1.5 cents each when redeemed through the Chase travel portal depending on which premium card you have. Carrying both the Flex card and a premium Chase card also gives you the opportunity for 1:1 transfers to Chase’s airline and hotel partners like United and Hyatt.
The Chase Freedom Flex℠ * offers a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% - 29.24% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies. This makes the card a solid option if you want to charge a big purchase and pay down your balance over time without worrying about interest for the duration of the 0% introductory APR period.
The card’s benefits also include purchase protection against damage and theft and extended warranties for eligible items.
Those looking to get into the Chase ecosystem with a no-annual-fee card might want to consider the flat-rate Chase Freedom Unlimited® .

An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days of account opening. Rewards: Earn 4 points per dollar on dining, takeout, and restaurant delivery, 2 points per dollar at grocery stores, grocery delivery, gas stations, streaming services and on EV charging stations (excluding discount stores, supercenters and wholesale clubs effective September 9, 2024) and 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
Other benefits and drawbacks: Cardholders can also benefit from a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 billing cycles, followed by a regular variable APR of 18.24% - 29.24%. A balance transfer fee of 3% applies ($5 minimum). The card also offers a $15 annual streaming bonus for services like Netflix, Apple TV+, Spotify and others.
The Hilton Honors American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees ) offers the ability to earn Hilton Honors points for each dollar you spend and automatically qualify for elite perks.

What Does No Annual Fee Mean?
No annual fee means the credit card company does not charge you to maintain the credit card. No annual fee does not mean you should expect no fees at all—you might still pay interest, over-limit fees, late payment fees or a foreign transaction fee. Carefully consult your cardholder agreement and the Schumer box therein.
Why Do Credit Cards Have Annual Fees?
When a credit card charges an annual fee, it means the issuer is charging the cardholder directly to maintain the account. Once a credit card is activated, this type of flat fee isn’t impacted by how the card is used or by any other factors within the cardholder’s control—it simply recurs for as long as the account stays open. Most commonly, an annual fee is billed on the anniversary month of the credit card account’s opening. The cost of these fees can vary dramatically.
Annual fees are, unsurprisingly, not popular, so why do credit card issuers commonly charge them? Traditionally, cards with higher annual fees offer significantly better perks. It’s still common for no-annual-fee cards to fall on the less-generous end of the benefits spectrum. Credit cards designed for individuals with low credit scores and poor application prospects may also charge a high annual fee and a higher APR to offset the theoretically heightened risk assumed by the issuer.
Credit card issuers expect to profit from each offering, and each card represents a calculated compromise between advantages popular among consumers and guarantees or benefits for the issuer. Your choice should focus on the combination of pros and cons providing you the best value.
How Do Travel Credit Cards With No Annual Fee Work?
No annual fee means the issuer does not charge consumers to carry the credit card. At least in theory, annual fees are levied by issuers to compensate for other aspects of a card considered especially favorable to the cardholder, such as rewards. Though it’s common for these fees to be waived for a year or altogether to attract customers, the most benefit-heavy cards often charge annual fees. Apart from this tradeoff, no-annual-fee credit cards function much like cards with annual fees.
Benefits of No-Annual-Fee Travel Credit Cards
Each card offers its own suite of benefits. These vary depending on the issuer, but most credit cards offer at least some of the following:
- Fraud protection (all consumer cards are required to offer a certain degree of protection)
- Introductory APRs
- Rewards earning (in the form of cashback from purchases or points and miles redeemable for airline tickets, hotel stays or other travel)
- Discounts on in-flight food and beverage purchases
No-annual-fee cards may offer fewer of these benefits compared to their counterparts that charge an annual fee.
Who Should Get a No-Annual-Fee Travel Credit Card?
Many people can benefit from a no-annual-fee travel credit card. Whether you travel occasionally or all the time, these cards offer benefits targeted toward travelers without charging you anything to hold the card.
- If you’re an occasional traveler: Look for a travel credit card that offers the most benefits for the lowest fee—You can probably find a no-annual-fee card that will fit your needs.
- If you’re a frequent traveler: While you may be able to find a no-annual-fee travel card that works for you, there’s a good chance you would benefit more from one of the best travel cards , many of which do charge an annual fee.
How To Choose the Right Travel Credit Card With No Annual Fee
All the travel credit cards in our ranking allow consumers to earn travel rewards points or cash back without having to pay a fee each year. But there’s more to picking a travel credit card than just finding an option without a fee. The following tips can help shoppers find a card that suits their needs:
- Compare rewards programs: Make sure you’re earning rewards you can actually use. If you plan to pick up a hotel credit card or airline credit card specifically, you’ll want to explore the loyalty program to ensure you understand how it works and whether it makes sense for you. If you never fly, for example, there’s no sense in earning airline miles.
- Consider flexible travel options: Decide whether a flexible travel credit card might work better. While some cards only let you redeem points within a specific loyalty program, others allow you to cash in points for any travel purchase you want or for additional redemption options like gift cards or merchandise.
- Look at 0% APR offers: Many cards on our list also offer an introductory 0% APR for a limited time. Some of these offers apply only to purchases, but a few apply to balance transfers, as well.
- Look for other cardholder perks: Finally, consider which cards offer the benefits you want most, whether those include no foreign transaction fees, elite status with a loyalty program or travel insurance benefits. Ideally, you’ll find a card with rewards you can use and cardholder perks that make sense for the way you travel.

How To Apply for a No-Annual-Fee Travel Credit Card
It is often easiest to compare and apply for credit cards through the card issuer’s website. Though you can often apply over the phone or by mail, these methods may take longer and be less convenient.
Applicants should know their credit scores and credit histories before shopping for cards. No-annual-fee travel credit cards may require good to excellent credit for an application to be successful. The better your score and credit history, the better your chances for approval.
Any applicant can take steps to increase creditworthiness and chances of approval for new cards. These steps include clearing up any outstanding debts carried elsewhere and decreasing your credit utilization ratio , representing how much of your overall available credit is used. Applicants should also become familiar with the card’s terms and conditions and check for any important details in the fine print before applying.
Is a Credit Card With No Annual Fee Worth It?
A credit card with no annual fee, as long as it offers you benefits and rewards that you can use, is worth it. The real question is this: Is there another card that’s better? There may be another no-annual-fee card that offers rewards more in line with your spending habits or benefits that are more valuable to you. There could be a credit card with an annual fee that offers even better rewards and benefits—enough to offset the annual fee—that makes even more sense. It’s worthwhile to take some time to compare the available options so you can find the card that’s best for you.
Bottom Line
Many excellent travel cards offer lucrative rewards and benefits without charging an annual fee. Though no annual fee does not mean the absence of fees altogether, paying an annual fee is only worthwhile if a cardholder can extract at least as much value from that card beyond what the best no-annual-fee card can offer. Carefully do your research before applying for any card, and recognize that just because a card doesn’t charge an annual fee doesn’t mean it won’t stick you with interest and other fees if you don’t manage the account responsibly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the best credit card with no annual fee and cashback.
There is not one no-annual-fee cash-back card that tops all others, as everyone has a unique credit profile and set of needs. Our list is designed to give you a starting point for your search. If you are looking for a card with no annual fee and category bonuses, consider the Chase Freedom Flex℠ * . If you are looking for no annual fee and simple cash rewards, consider the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card.
What benefits are common for no-annual-fee cards?
Each card offers its own suite of benefits. These vary depending on the vendor, but most credit cards offer fraud protection (all consumer cards are required to offer a certain degree of protection), and many offer some sort of rewards or intro APR.
What is the best credit card for airline miles with no annual fee?
We consider the United Gateway℠ Card and the JetBlue Card * to be among the best no-annual-fee airline cards, but the card best for you depends on your spending habits, airline preference and more. Other airlines also offer no-annual-fee options, but all airline cards without an annual fee are light on the benefits compared to annual-fee card peers. If you regularly fly with a specific airline or if you occasionally fly but usually check a bag, consider an airline card with an annual fee. While you may pay an annual fee, the savings from a free checked bag and other benefits could save you money in the long run.
Which no-annual-fee travel cards offer the best welcome bonus?
Welcome bonuses vary not only by the card but by the day. Banks frequently publish new promotions, so welcome bonuses may change without much notice. A couple of cards consistently offering solid welcome bonuses are the Chase Freedom Flex℠ * and the United Gateway℠ Card .
What credit score do I need to get a no-annual-fee travel card?
Generally, rewards cards—including travel credit cards—typically require good to excellent credit even when the card doesn’t have an annual fee. A score in the good range of 670 to 739 may be sufficient for a basic rewards card, but for the strongest rewards, you can expect to need a score of 740 or higher to qualify.
What is the best travel rewards credit card with no annual fee?
The best travel rewards card for you may not be the best travel rewards card for the next consumer. While we believe the Chase Freedom Flex℠ * may be an excellent overall choice for many, we urge you to carefully research whether the card’s reward structure matches your spending habits and if this card’s set of travel benefits and protections will serve you better than another card.
When should I look for a no-annual-fee credit card?
Though many cards in the list of no-annual-fee credit cards above require a more robust credit history than most when initially looking for a credit card , no-annual-fee credit cards make great first credit cards. Many no-annual-fee cards also offer low or 0% introductory APRs on purchases or balance transfers when you need to make a large purchase or complete a balance transfer, but applying for any credit card should only be done when you’re ready for the responsibility associated with a credit card account.
Can you get a no-annual-fee travel card with bad credit?
It may be difficult to qualify for a no-annual-fee travel card with bad credit. You should first consider the best cards for bad credit and focus on improving your credit score to gain access to better credit card products in the future.
Is it hard to qualify for a no-annual-fee travel credit card?
It’s not necessarily hard to qualify for a no-annual-fee travel credit card, but your credit profile will be evaluated when you apply.
