• Admin Language — Set the language for administrative pages and reports
• Only Google Maps offers three (3) different views: Road Map , Satellite view and Topographical Map
• Click the Drop Down next to the Latitude / Longitude coordinates to set the position of your map.
• Point and click to place the marker where you would like to center the map
• Time Zone — Use this drop-down to set the correct time zone for your service. Your time is based on UTC / GMT time zone. ( Link to Time Zone calculator)
• Data Center On? — To create incidents and send messages to responders listed in this data center, this must be set to “ON”. Changing this setting to “OFF” will prevent any incidents from being created
• Weather Maps On? — Select if you would like to activate Open Weather Map layer overlays options. This setting only pertains to the web app interface.
• Incident Numbering — Enter the number you would like your Incidents to start with. By default, Incidents will start numbering with “1”
• Custom Agency Logo — Click here to upload a custom logo. Agency logo conforming to the listed specifications can be uploaded to your account and will be displayed on the top left of the dispatcher dashboard in place of the default Beacon logo.

OpenTopoMap and Google Terrain map options available under Maps Provider

OpenTopoMap is available as a third Maps Provider option on the Settings Menu page under Dashboard Settings.

For Google Terrain , the Maps Provider should be set to Google on the Settings Menu page under Dashboard Settings. Switching between Google Maps, Satellite View and Terrain is done using the dashboard button.

Broadcast Alerts

Broadcast Alerts allow you to “crowdsource” Responders – similar to how Uber and Lyft crowdsource taxi drivers. Broadcast Alerts help response networks with large pools of Responders to improve response times, resource allocation, and response coverage.

Included here is a brief description of how they work — but please keep in mind that these settings can be used in a variety of different combinations, so we urge you to  read a more in-depth discussion of the different Broadcast Alert settings here .

• Maximum Number of Responders per Incident  — Sets the limit on how many Responders can respond to each incident alert. This is will be the default setting and can be changed when creating a new incident
• Preferred ETA  — Determines which Responders are preferred for an incident based on their ETA. When set at 10 minutes, Responders with an ETA of 10 minutes or less will be assigned to the incident; Responders with an ETA greater than 10 minutes will be told to standby.Check out these  scenarios  and  diagrams  to see more examples of how the Preferred ETA works
• Confirmation Window 1*  — The least amount of time (in minutes) you are willing to wait for Responders to reply to a Broadcast Alert from Beacon
• Confirmation Window 2*  — The most amount of time (in minutes) you are willing to wait for Responders to reply to a Broadcast Alert from Beacon
• Custom Incident Labels  — Allows managers to customize the Incident Class, Category and Type labels that appear on the Create Incident page – e.g, “Emergency – Trauma: Motor Vehicle Collision”.
• Default Dispatch Type  — Set the default setting for “Dispatch Type” on the Create Incident panel

*For urban environments, the standard preferred ETA is 10 minutes or less. For rural environments, the standard preferred ETA is likely 20 minutes or more, depending on how many responders there are and how big your catchment area is.

FAQ: Why does the incident stay open after I complete it?

Incidents can be closed in three ways:

• All Assigned Responders complete the incident
• The Dispatcher cancels the incident manually
• Confirmation Window 2 closes and no other Responders are assigned*

If you’re using Beacon to run simulations, it’s very likely you’re going to move through the incident very quickly — faster than in real life. This will result in you completing the incident before the Confirmation Windows close, so the incident will stay open until the Confirmation Windows close.

Responder Tag Settings

This is where you can create and save the different Tags your agency uses to organize responders — for example, according to neighborhood, zone, skill, seniority, role, equipment etc.

• Note: This is not a public access number — like 911, 112, 999 etc. This number is for Responders only, not to be shared with the public or published on the internet
• Outgoing Message Server*  — Displays which SMS Gateway is being used to send messages to Responders (Twilio, Nexmo, Beem Africa, etc.).
• Supervisor Notices  — This link takes you to a screen that allows you to add people who will receive Initial Alerts for each incident created via SMS, but are not Responders. Unlike Responders, the same phone number can be added to the Supervisor Notices List in as many different Data Centers as you have access to

*Indicates settings that can only be changed by  Trek Medics staff.

• Restrict Active Incident Visibility  — If set to “ Yes ”, Responders will only be able to see Active Incidents in the mobile app when they are assigned to that Incident. If set to “ No” , Responders will be able to see all Active Incidents in the mobile app, whether or not they’ve been assigned to them
• Incident Priority — Beacon offers options to categorize incidents. Learn more about incident priority and how it can be used here .

• Web App user List — Users of the Web application with Manager permission can manage other users — dispatchers and managers who are connected to the agency account.
• SMS Dispatcher List — Add and manage phone numbers enabled for creating new incidents via SMS. (See pages:  Add SMS Dispatchers  and  Create Incidents by SMS )
• Map Layers — will take you to a new page where you can add/edit map layers. Read more about Map Layers here .

• Incident Report Access Log — Click view to see a table that will show username and date for each accessed the Incident Report
• Case Reports User List — Click view to add Responders who will be creating Case Reports through the mobile app, otherwise they will not be able to access the feature on their devices
• Custom Document Upload — Click upload to add Custom Documents that will be available for Responders to use in the Documents section of the Case Reports

A ctress Barbara Baldavin, who appeared in three episodes of the original “ Star Trek ” television series during its first season and later appeared on “ Medical Center ,” died Sunday. She was 85.

Baldavin died of congestive heart failure at her home in Manhattan Beach, California, her son, Marc D’Agosta, told The Hollywood Reporter . She was born on Oct. 18, 1938, the entertainment news website reported.

In the original “Star Trek” series, Baldavin played phaser control officer Angela Martine in two episodes, according to IMDb.com . During the series’ final season, she returned as Lt. Lisa in “Star Trek’s” last episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Baldavin also appeared in 48 episodes of “Medical Center” from 1970 to 1976 as Nurse Holmby, according to IMDb.com . She played the character of Norma Summers in three episodes during the show’s first season in 1969.

She also had guest roles on “Rawhide,” “The Fugitive,” “Insight,” “Columbo,” “Mannix,” “Adam-12,” “Toma,” “The F.B.I.,” “McMillan & Wife,” “Bronk,” “Baretta,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Barnaby Jones,” Vega$” and “Fantasy Island,” according to The Hollywood Reporter .

During the 1980s, Baldavin worked in the casting departments of several television shows, including “Hagen,” “Square Pegs,” “Matt Houston,” “Dynasty,” “Finder of Lost Loves” and “Trapper John, M.D., according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Star Trek: Voyager season 7 seems to argue in favor of AI-generated artwork, but what does Star Trek really have to say about generative AI?

Today's debates around AI-generated art were predicted by Star Trek: Voyager 23 years ago. In Voyager season 7, episode 20, "Author, Author", Voyager's holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) writes a holonovel called "Photons Be Free", which draws heavy inspiration from the Doctor's own experiences interacting with the crew of the USS Voyager . The novel is a hit in the Alpha Quadrant, but there's a wrinkle when the unfavorable depiction of the Voyager crew prompts the Doctor to reconsider his artistic approach. The Doctor resolves to make revisions to the program's characters but discovers that he's legally unable to do so.

As an artificial life form, the Doctor can be compared to characters like Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner). Data's personhood was legally determined in TNG season 2, episode 19, "The Measure of a Man", which provided the blueprint for future Star Trek courtroom dramas debating the rights of life forms that don't fit the default human model. Starfleet determines that Data is a person, and entitled to all the rights thereof, so the precedent set in "The Measure of a Man" implies that Star Trek is in favor of civil rights for artificial intelligence. But what does Star Trek have to say about AI art?

Star Trek: Voyager 's question about whether AI like the Doctor has rights as an artist feels unusually prescient in today's AI-saturated art landscape. With characters clearly based on Voyager's crew and events in the novel echoing familiar Star Trek: Voyager stories, the Doctor's holonovel is derivative in a way that resembles today's AI-generated artwork, particularly because modern AI must be trained on a body of work created by humans who haven't consented to the use of their creations -- or, like on Voyager , their likenesses. Just like the publisher arguing the Doctor has no legal claim to "Photons Be Free", artwork created by AI today can't be copyrighted.

There's a vast difference between the AI that generates artwork in the 2020s and Star Trek: Voyager 's Doctor. Today's AI models rely heavily on pattern recognition to algorithmically generate work based on the examples that they've been trained on. Generative AI uses those examples to predict what words or pixels are most likely to appear in proximity to one another, given the data it has access to. Sentient holograms on Star Trek , however, are narrative stand-ins for marginalized groups. The Doctor gains some civil rights because Star Trek: Voyager 's story is actually saying that human artists should have control of their work , not that AI models are people.

Data's rights as a creator were called into question in TNG season 3, episode 16, "The Offspring", after Data created his daughter, Lal (Hallie Todd), but the inconclusive nature of Lal's case means there's no precedent for the Doctor's petition for holographic rights.

The Real Future Of Generative AI On Star Trek Is The Holodeck

The future of generative AI on Star Trek isn't in its characters, but the holodeck. Like modern AI models, the holodeck generates work based on user prompts, with personal programs containing parameters for specific story elements like characters, environment, and narratives. Star Trek 's holodecks , like those on the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the USS Voyager, are essentially trained on information from ships' databases to predict what happens, and what that looks like in fully-realized, immersive 3D. Privately-owned holosuites like on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine may rely on smaller data sets, but can still only generate characters based on pre-existing parameters.

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , season 3, episode 8, "Meridian", Quark (Armin Shimerman) must get a scan of Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) to satisfy a customer's desire to put Kira in a holosuite program.

The holodeck is a far better example of AI-generated art in action than the Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager . In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 8, "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus", Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) provides insufficient input, so, just like modern AI confidently "hallucinating" output, the holodeck generates nonsense like the character Knicknac (Ben Rodgers) and Ki-ty-ha's platitudes like "the purpose of life is… a life of purpose." The Doctor, however, learns like a person by doing research and correcting mistakes. By proving the Doctor is a sentient life form and not just a program, Star Trek: Voyager champions the rights of human artists today, not AI.

Barbara Baldavin, who appeared on three episodes of the original Star Trek and recurred on Medical Center before working in the casting department on shows including Dynasty and Trapper John, M.D. , has died. She was 85.

Baldavin died Sunday of congestive heart failure at her home in Manhattan Beach, her son Marc D’Agosta told The Hollywood Reporter .

She then returned as Lt. Lisa, a communications officer and court reporter, on the series finale, “Turnabout Intruder,” which aired in June 1969.

Baldavin played Nurse Holmby on 51 episodes during the last six seasons (1970-76) of CBS’ Medical Center , starring Chad Everett and James Daly. She had appeared as another character on the first season.

In the 1980s, she worked in the casting departments of shows including Hagen — Everett’s series follow-up to Medical Center — Square Pegs , Matt Houston , Dynasty , Finder of Lost Loves and Trapper John, M.D.

A native of Quincy, Massachusetts, Baldavin started acting while attending El Camino College in Torrance, California, and she studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute.

She also showed up on episodes of Rawhide , The Fugitive , Insight , Columbo , Mannix , Adam-12 , Toma , The F.B.I. , McMillan & Wife , Bronk , Baretta , Barnaby Jones , Charlie’s Angels , Fantasy Island , Vega$ and more.

Baldavin worked as an instructor at Dawn Wells ‘ Film Actor’s Boot Camp. She and the late Gilligan’s Island star were great friends and shared a birthdate: Oct. 18, 1938.

Survivors include another son, Joseph, and her grandchildren, Casandra and Justine. Her former husband was Joseph D’Agosta, who served as casting director on Star Trek and other Desilu series.

69-year-old man charged in death of beloved ‘Star Trek’ tour guide

MILTON, N.Y. (WRGB) – A 69-year-old man is facing manslaughter charges in the case of a missing New York man.

Friends of the victim, identified as Thomas Krider, said he was a beloved character in the “Star Trek” and entertainment community.

Ronald Rayher was arrested and arraigned on charges of manslaughter in the second degree and tampering with physical evidence.

Court documents said Rayher moved and hid personal effects belonging to Krider from the scene after his death.

Police in New York reported Krider missing on April 6.

The 40-year-old victim, also known as T.J. Green, was an employee and tour guide at the “Star Trek” set tour in Ticonderoga.

James Crawley, a friend of the victim, said Krider was also a talented Elvis Presley tribute artist and “he will be remembered for his kind and trusting soul and his warm, friendly demeanor.”

“We are devastated by his loss and will keep him close to our hearts,” Krider said.

Rayher is being held on a $250,000 bond. He is due back in court on May 21.

Engineers recreate Star Trek's Holodeck using ChatGPT and video game assets

In "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise leverage the Holodeck, an empty room capable of generating 3D environments, of preparing for missions and entertaining them, simulating everything from lush jungles to the London of Sherlock Holmes.

Deeply immersive and fully interactive, Holodeck-created environments are infinitely customizable, using nothing but language; the crew has only to ask the computer to generate an environment, and that space appears in the Holodeck.

Today, virtual interactive environments are also used to train robots prior to real-world deployment in a process called "Sim2Real." However, virtual interactive environments have been in surprisingly short supply.

"Artists manually create these environments," says Yue Yang, a doctoral student in the labs of Mark Yatskar and Chris Callison-Burch, Assistant and Associate Professors in Computer and Information Science (CIS), respectively. "Those artists could spend a week building a single environment," Yang adds, noting all the decisions involved, from the layout of the space to the placement of objects to the colors employed in rendering.

That paucity of virtual environments is a problem if you want to train robots to navigate the real world with all its complexities. Neural networks, the systems powering today's AI revolution, require massive amounts of data, which in this case means simulations of the physical world.

"Generative AI systems like ChatGPT are trained on trillions of words, and image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E are trained on billions of images," says Callison-Burch. "We only have a fraction of that amount of 3D environments for training so-called 'embodied AI.' If we want to use generative AI techniques to develop robots that can safely navigate in real-world environments, then we will need to create millions or billions of simulated environments."

Enter Holodeck , a system for generating interactive 3D environments co-created by Callison-Burch, Yatskar, Yang and Lingjie Liu, Aravind K. Joshi Assistant Professor in CIS, along with collaborators at Stanford, the University of Washington, and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). Named for its Star Trek forebear, Holodeck generates a virtually limitless range of indoor environments, using AI to interpret users' requests.

The paper is published on the arXiv preprint server.

"We can use language to control it," says Yang. "You can easily describe whatever environments you want and train the embodied AI agents."

Holodeck leverages the knowledge embedded in large language models (LLMs), the systems underlying ChatGPT, and other chatbots. "Language is a very concise representation of the entire world," says Yang. Indeed, LLMs turn out to have a surprisingly high degree of knowledge about the design of spaces, thanks to the vast amounts of text they ingest during training. In essence, Holodeck works by engaging an LLM in conversation, using a carefully structured series of hidden queries to break down user requests into specific parameters.

Just like Captain Picard might ask Star Trek's Holodeck to simulate a speakeasy, researchers can ask Penn's Holodeck to create "a 1b1b apartment of a researcher who has a cat." The system executes this query by dividing it into multiple steps: First, the floor and walls are created, then the doorway and windows.

Next, Holodeck searches Objaverse , a vast library of premade digital objects, for the sort of furnishings you might expect in such a space: a coffee table, a cat tower, and so on. Finally, Holodeck queries a layout module, which the researchers designed to constrain the placement of objects so that you don't wind up with a toilet extending horizontally from the wall.

To evaluate Holodeck's abilities, in terms of their realism and accuracy, the researchers generated 120 scenes using both Holodeck and ProcTHOR, an earlier tool created by AI2, and asked several hundred Penn Engineering students to indicate their preferred version, not knowing which scenes were created by which tools. For every criterion—asset selection, layout coherence, and overall preference—the students consistently rated the environments generated by Holodeck more favorably.

The researchers also tested Holodeck's ability to generate scenes that are less typical in robotics research and more difficult to manually create than apartment interiors, like stores, public spaces, and offices. Comparing Holodeck's outputs to those of ProcTHOR, which were generated using human-created rules rather than AI-generated text, the researchers found once again that human evaluators preferred the scenes created by Holodeck. That preference held across a wide range of indoor environments, from science labs to art studios, locker rooms to wine cellars.

Finally, the researchers used scenes generated by Holodeck to "fine-tune" an embodied AI agent. "The ultimate test of Holodeck," says Yatskar, "is using it to help robots interact with their environment more safely by preparing them to inhabit places they've never been before."

Across multiple types of virtual spaces, including offices, daycares, gyms and arcades, Holodeck had a pronounced and positive effect on the agent's ability to navigate new spaces.

For instance, whereas the agent successfully found a piano in a music room only about 6% of the time when pre-trained using ProcTHOR (which involved the agent taking about 400 million virtual steps), the agent succeeded over 30% of the time when fine-tuned using 100 music rooms generated by Holodeck.

"This field has been stuck doing research in residential spaces for a long time," says Yang. "But there are so many diverse environments out there—efficiently generating a lot of environments to train robots has always been a big challenge, but Holodeck provides this functionality."

In June, the researchers will present Holodeck at the 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Computer Vision Foundation (CVF) Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Conference in Seattle, Washington.
