Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala Is Candid About Book's Future

Cleveland "Book" Booker has become one of the more polarizing figures in Star Trek: Discovery . After defying the Federation and using illegal weapons during Season 4 in an attempt to avenge the destruction of his home planet Kwejian, Book is seeking redemption in Season 5 while the USS Discovery pursues criminals Moll and L'ak. However, after learning that Moll is the daughter of his mentor from Kwejian , Book takes the mission much more personally.

In an interview with CBR, Star Trek: Discovery actor David Ajala explains the personal nature of Book's journey and motivations in Season 5, discusses his character’s changing and increasingly complex dynamic with Burnham this season and reflects on getting to be a part of the wider Star Trek franchise as Discovery nears its final bow.

CBR: After Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 kept Book away from the Discovery more often than not, how is it to be back in the thick of the action with Burnham in Season 5?

David Ajala: I've mentioned before how Cleveland Booker has been afforded an act of grace , for a second chance to make amends. This season has a redemptive arc for him. Getting to be back in the thick of the action is just where Cleveland Booker is comfortable. I really do believe that he always wants to be of service, so whenever they need him, and he gets the call from [the] Bat-Phone, he's happy to be there. It only takes Michael Burnham to say "I need you. We need you," and he'll be there. He has such a fierce loyalty to Michael Burnham -- and such a great, deep love for her too.

The discovery of Moll's connection to Book's mentor and Kwejian changes everything for him. Do you feel Book is trying to find atonement by reaching out to Moll?

Star Trek: Discovery's Alex Kurtzman & Michelle Paradise Talk Final Season

I think that's something that Cleveland Booker is deeply pursuing, but is not pressurized externally to have to do. He's the kind of individual that has to see justice served. He's the kind of individual that wants to be of service, always. In this instance now, where the only way to be of service is to reach out to an individual who is actively shutting you down and doesn't want to be a part of you, the only way that Cleveland Booker is able to overcome that and still reach Moll is because of the abundance of grace, patience and kindness that he has. I think because of his experiences, he is well-positioned to intercede on behalf of Moll, to try and build some bridges.

Looking back at where Book was at the start of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 -- the courier enjoying his independence around the galaxy -- do you think he sees a part of himself in Moll?

He is absolutely doing that, but I think it's an unconscious thing that he's doing, which is why it gets really interesting and more nuanced, because you see how far these feelings go in trying to intercede on Moll's behalf. That happens when we get into dangerous territory, which has echoes of what happened in Season 4, when Cleveland Booker was actively trying to seek revenge or get justice. You can see how it's a very complicated situation. I think he's only able to go as far as he does because of the love that Michael Burnham has for him, and he's also very aware not to take advantage of that.

Season 3 was a very physically-oriented season for Book, and Season 4 was more introspective as he contemplated how far he would go after losing Kwejian. Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 has big action scenes, but also quiet moments as Book and Burnham realize things are different between them. How do you play that balance?

Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green Embarks on One Final Voyage

Balance and introspection, micro and macro, for me as an actor, is always a wonderful opportunity to find that light and shade because we go from "We're saving the universe" or "Were saving thousands of people" to "Oh, you look different." I love the attention of detail that they have [for] each other, because they recognize each other so well. I think it's the nature of their relationship that makes them so special, because I really do believe that they bring out the best in each other. But it is also bittersweet because they recognize that they're in different territory -- there's a distance between the two of them, in that they don't quite recognize each other.

Since you now have several seasons of Discovery to your credit, how was it welcoming several new cast members in Season 5?

Star Trek: Discovery's Callum Keith Rennie Shows a New Side of Starfleet

Having Callum [Keith Rennie], Eve [Harlow] and Elias [Toufexis] join the show has just been so much fun. They're all uniquely individual, talented and great, but for me, it's what they bring to the franchise and what they bring to the set. They just bring such warmth, passion and kindness to the set. I got to work quite a bit with Eve and Elias, and Callum a little bit. I wish I got to work with Callum more. That guy is so wonderful and, similar to Wilson Cruz, I don't think people understand how funny he is. He is hilarious! Being the previous new kid on the block and welcoming the guys into the fold felt like a pleasure, but they didn't really need much because they were so good to go.

You've taken Book on this journey from being independent courier to someone who lost everything and is now working towards redemption. What does playing that character arc mean to you?

With someone like Cleveland Booker, there is a reason why he is a lone ranger; it's him and Grudge. It's not because he's afraid of love; I just think he's just used to operating the way that he does -- which is why the end of [Discovery] Season 3 was so powerful , because we see how Cleveland Booker sees the benefits of being a part of Starfleet. He had to see that being part of Starfleet because of Michael Burnham isn't enough. I think it's such a treat that the audience gets to see that. I'm also very thankful that Cleveland Booker was given a second chance because I believe, in life, some of us may need to be afforded a second chance, because we're all human with the best of intentions. To see his fall from grace and his rise up [to] be of service to people is such a wonderful lesson to learn in life.

As you prepare to say goodbye to Cleveland Booker, at least for now, how would you describe being part of this nearly 60-year Star Trek franchise?

Star Trek: Discovery Ending Is a Blessing in Disguise

My character joined in Season 3, which was set a thousand years into the future . I purposefully didn't watch too many episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, because I didn't want to be too familiar with the characters. When I was on set, everything was new to me. I wasn't familiar with individual characters' idiosyncrasies. The freedom of that really allowed me to flow, really enjoy it and break some of the rules, because I had nothing to compare it to. I'm really happy that was my process in joining this franchise, because I really do believe it gave this character such wonderful levity.

‘Discovery’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ Studio Honors Iconic Franchise With the ‘Star Trek’ Stage

Pinewood Studios has named one of their Toronto soundstages after the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek has a strong bond with Toronto; Pinewood Studios stage renamed to honor franchise's connection with Canada's largest city.
  • Discovery 's final season filmed in Toronto; Strange New Worlds is currently shooting in the city.
  • Paramount+ executive producer thanked Toronto for hospitality; future Star Trek productions are planned in the city.

Star Trek has called Toronto, Ontario home since the launch of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, and now one of their studio homes has been renamed to commemorate the long-running science fiction franchise's bond with Canada's largest city. One of Pinewood Studios Toronto's soundstages has been renamed the Star Trek Stage. On Discovery , the 18,000 square-foot stage is used for both the USS Discovery 's ready room and for the United Federation of Planets' space station headquarters; several other stages are used for the ship's other locations, while many outdoor scenes are shot on location in the greater Toronto area.

The stage was officially renamed during the filming of Discovery 's fifth and final season . In a statement, Paramount+'s Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman expressed his gratitude for the city's hospitality to Trek's cast and crew: "Pinewood Toronto Studios has become a second home for our Star Trek family, and we’re grateful that they’ve named a stage in honor of the franchise. In addition to the amazing stage space, we’ve benefited from working with the talented artists in front of the camera and behind the scenes and look forward to our partnership in Toronto on future series."

What Other 'Star Trek' Series Are Shot in Toronto?

Despite the impending end of Discovery 's five-season mission, Star Trek in Toronto isn't going anywhere. Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds , which was recently renewed for a fourth season , is currently filming its third season in the city. Additionally, the newest series Starfleet Academy is slated to shoot there later this year . The Paramount+-original movie, Star Trek: Section 31 , also filmed in Toronto, and wrapped production earlier this year . While Toronto and its environs are typically called upon to represent alien worlds, the city did get a chance to play itself in the second-season Strange New Worlds episode " Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ", in which La'an Noonien-Singh and James T. Kirk had to foil a Romulan plot in the Ontario capital.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season has the crew chasing the ancient secret behind all life across the galaxy, even as they try to outrace a new pair of implacable foes. In her review , Collider's Samantha Coley deemed it "well-paced and well-structured, with each episode offering a satisfying piece of the puzzle."

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season is now streaming on Paramount+ ; Strange New Worlds ' third season is currently filming in Toronto, and Starfleet Academy will film there later this year. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

New star trek drink details confirmed by discovery writer.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's Commander Rayner promised his crew casks of Kellerun Citrus Mash, and writer Carlos Cisco confirms what that is.

  • Commander Rayner's favorite drink, Kellerun citrus mash, is a moonshine-like liquor made from local citrus fruits on Kellerun.
  • Captain Burnham connects with the USS Discovery's new First Officer by learning about Kellerun culture, including their indulgence in citrus mash.
  • Co-writer Carlos Cisco clarified Memory Alpha's data entry about Kellerun citrus mash.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) promised his bridge crew casks of Kellerun citrus mash, and writer Carlos Cisco confirms what that alcoholic drink is made of. Rayner is a Kellerun , a species first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) has made a point to learn about Kelleruns to connect with the USS Discovery's new First Officer. Along with boiling their cakes, Kelleruns like to indulge in a concoction called citrus mash.

Carlos Cisco (@carlos_cisco), who co-wrote Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 , "Mirrors" with Johanna Lee, replied to an X post by Memory Alpha (@memoryalpha) explaining what Kellerun citrus mash is . Check out Cisco's post defining Kellerun citrus mash below:

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Kellerun citrus mash joins list of star trek adult beverages, star trek likes to get its drink on.

Relaxing with an alcoholic drink has been a staple o f Star Trek since its original pilot , "The Cage," when Dr. Phil Boyce (John Hoyt) fixed Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) a martini. Commander Rayner's Kellerun citrus mash on Star Trek: Discovery joins a long list of fictional and real-life alcohol enjoyed throughout the Star Trek franchise, from the scotch preferred by Scotty (James Doohan) to Pavel Chekov's (Walter Koenig) vodka to Klingon bloodwine to Romulan ale, which has been illegal for centuries. Cardassians like their kanar and Saurian brandy is always a favorite.

It sounds like there will be plenty of Kellrun citrus mash hangovers on the Discovery.

Starships in Star Trek often have bars where officers can unwind at the end of their duty shifts. Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) slung synthehol at Ten Forward on the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation and she had her own bar in Los Angeles in Star Trek: Picard . The USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks has a bar, and so does the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , known as a the Port Galley. The USS Discovery has a bar where Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) sips Vesper martinis ice-cold. After Star Trek: Discovery season 5's successful mission, it sounds like there will be plenty of Kellrun citrus mash hangovers on the Discovery.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

  • Share full article

A model of the U.S.S. Enterprise stands on a wooden base against a black backdrop.

By Emily Schmall

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

Global Screen Boards Supernatural Survival Horror ‘The Trek’ (EXCLUSIVE)

"The Trek"

Global Screen , the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam . The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.

“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.

Popular on Variety

The film stars an established South African cast which includes Morné Visser (“The Kissing Booth 1,2,3”), well-known comedian Rob van Vuuren (Netflix series “Ludik,” “Slumber Party Massacre,” “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” “The Mauritanian”), Trix Vivier (“Trackers,” “Legacy”), Maurice Carpede (“The Kingdom”), Camilla Borghesani (“Roxy”) and newcomer Leah Lindeque.

Durban-born Adam, whose background includes commercials, music videos and documentaries, has quickly emerged as one of South Africa’s leading young talents since moving into feature films. His first feature as DOP, Apartheid political thriller “The Last Victims” (2019) was recognized with over 20 awards at international festivals including a best cinematography nod at the RapidLion Film Festival, also known as the South African International Film Festival. Adam also recently directed and served as cinematographer for one episode of “Stories of a Generation – With Pope Francis,” the Netflix docu-series that features Martin Scorsese.

Global Screen’s Martin Schneider describes “The Trek” as the kind of special elevated genre cocktail today’s buyers are always on the hunt for: “The film is an innovative blend of historical thriller, survival horror and supernatural elements that draws on authentic Southern African lore and history as well as its unique Kalahari Desert setting. The story also incorporates the complex themes at the forefront of today’s cultural conversations, especially the dark legacy of racism and colonialism.

“Meekaaeel has established himself over the last years as one of South Africa’s best DOP’s and now one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming directors. His story-centric approach to shooting and commitment to visual storytelling make him the perfect fit for this special genre project. In terms of Meekaaeel’s precision and the visceral nature of his filmmaking, we are reminded of movies like ‘Bone Tomahawk’ by S. Craig Zahler and directors who craft gripping, multilayered genre films with substance as well as scares, like Karyn Kusama or Jeremy Saulnier, also a DOP turned director.”

Adam commented: “The key conflict that the film explores is the oldest one of them all: the struggle over land. Our family of settlers, whose arrival tips the natural balance, are put on a brutal collision course with forces that are bound to protect the land at any cost. Both sides in this conflict stand to lose everything and there’s a feeling of inevitability as each step on their journey strips them of more of their humanity. I think this speaks to the loss of innocence that the colonial project brought about and the importance of looking back so as not to let history repeat itself. A partner like Global Screen – who understands the weight of this story – is indispensable in allowing ‘The Trek’ to be seen by genre and film lovers far beyond South Africa.”

Faithful to South Africa’s multilingual history, the film is majority English language, but also features dialogue in Afrikaans and Khoekhoengowab, a now endangered language that makes heavy use of click consonants.

“The Trek” was written by James C. Williamson, J. Hannah Massyn and Sandulela Asanda. Williamson’s 2020 festival hit “Fried Barry” played Sitges, Fantasia and L’Étrange Film Festival and found distribution in over 70 countries, including deals with Shudder and ShowMax.

“The Trek” will also feature original music from Haezer, one of South Africa’s top electronic musicians.

“The Trek” is currently in post-production and expected to launch at a major film festival in the second half of 2024. The film is produced by Williamson for The Department of Special Projects and Warren Gray for Resistance Pictures in co-production with Alto Media (South Africa), Resistance Pictures (Cape Town), and Sternenberg Films (Germany). It is supported by South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry and National Film and Video Foundation.

“The Trek” reflects a growing focus on genre content for Global Screen, part of the Telepool Group, best known for its expertise with animation, family entertainment and prestige drama. Global Screen’s foray into elevated genre includes the Sandra Hüller led nightmare-thriller “Sleep,” a debut feature by Michael Venus in which the Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Hüller plays a woman plagued by horrific dreams, which become a never-ending nightmare haunting an entire village community.

Recent genre titles handled also include “You’re Not Me” (Tú No Eres Yo) by Goya-nominated producers Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera, a Spanish-language satirical thriller, which launched at Fantastic Fest in Austin, before having its international premiere at Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam.

Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in the center of Moscow

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Architecture , Religion , Travel

Marfo-Mariinsky Convent of Mercy of the Russian Orthodox Church was founded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia in Moscow in 1909. Today, it is located in the center of the city on Bol’shaya Ordynka Street, 34.

The main attraction of the convent is the Intercession Cathedral built by the famous architect Alexey Shchusev in 1908-1912. This is a unique example of the Neo-Russian style in church architecture. Marfo-Mariinsky Convent on Google Maps . Photos by: Vladimir Dar .

The cathedral looks similar to the Novgorod and Pskov churches of the 12th-14th centuries, its walls are completely white, the long and narrow windows are covered with lattices with plant motifs.

The facades of the cathedral are decorated only with relief marks and depict the Crucifixion and the Heavenly Jerusalem.

MOSCOW (AP) — The death toll from last week’s Moscow concert hall attack rose to 143, Russian authorities said Wednesday. Around 80 other people wounded in the siege by gunmen remain hospitalized.

The Friday night massacre in Crocus City Hall, a sprawling shopping and entertainment venue on the northwestern outskirts of Moscow, was the deadliest extremist attack on Russian soil in nearly two decades. At least four gunmen toting automatic rifles shot at thousands of concertgoers and set the venue on fire.

An affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the violence, while U.S. intelligence said it had information confirming the group was responsible. French President Emmanuel Macron said France also has intelligence pointing to “an IS entity” as responsible for the attack.

The updated fatalities from Russia’s Emergencies Ministry didn’t state the number of wounded, but Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said earlier Wednesday that 80 people were in hospitals and another 205 had sought medical treatment from the attack.

Russia’s Federal Security Service, or the FSB, said it had arrested 11 people the day after the attack, including four suspected gunmen. The four men, identified as Tajik nationals, appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings. One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing.

Russian officials, however, have insisted that Ukraine and the West had a role , claims that Kyiv vehemently denies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of trying to drum up fervor as his forces fight in Ukraine.

FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov has also alleged, without providing evidence, that Western spy agencies could have been involved. He repeated Putin’s claim that the four gunmen were trying to escape to Ukraine when they were arrested, casting it as proof of Kyiv’s alleged involvement.

But that assertion was undercut by Belarus’ authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, who said Tuesday that the suspects were headed for Ukraine because they feared tight controls on the Belarus border.

The Islamic State group, which lost much of its territory following Russia’s military action in Syria after 2015, has long targeted Russia. In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian jetliner over the Sinai desert, killing all 224 people aboard, most of them Russian vacationers returning from Egypt.

The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in the past years. It has recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.

The United States warned Moscow two weeks before the massacre about a possible imminent attack. Three days before the tragedy, Putin denounced the U.S. Embassy’s notice on March 7 urging Americans to avoid crowds in Moscow, including concerts, calling it an attempt to frighten Russians and “blackmail” the Kremlin before the Russian presidential election.

Bortnikov said Russia was thankful for the warning but described it as very general.
