The Easiest Trip Around The World Here’s The Layout
A Strip Set Of Your Favorite Fabrics To Make This Easy Trip Around The World.
A Trip Around The World Quilt pattern for a full size bed quilt looks almost frightening and too complicated to even consider. This pretty Trip Around The World is a small project, small enough to give it a try. Some patterns are pieced by sewing individual squares together. The instructions are complicated, and the method seems so challenging that after reading all instructions, a quilter lacking in even the slightest confidence, might look for another quilt to make. However here is a simple tutorial for a very professional looking Trip Around The World. Once the strips sets are made the layout is quite easy to follow. Keep the project on a small scale for easier handling. An experienced quilter will find this method a breeze.
While this is the basic pattern, it is possible to make the quilt bigger as you wish. The unfinished quilt top for this design is 17″ square. To make the top larger use the same layout and add more squares. However, if not comfortable yet with the color placement and strip sets, the 17″will be a great start. Chumkie discovered when she looked at the pattern she realized that the design could be divided into four identical units. Then got the idea to try using strip sets and it worked.
Chumkie of Mistress Of Quilts suggests starting first with a mock-up, by coloring the squares on graph paper. This not only shows the layout and color placement but also helps decide the size of the quilt. It’s a good place to start. Almost everyone enjoys a little artwork and it’s fun of designing your own pattern.
The tutorial is very simple and easy to understand.
Give it a try. Use it to make a new and fresh table topper for your home. Any fabric colors are suitable and it’s a quick easy project to have fun with.

One of the prettiest quilts my Grandmother made was a Trip Around the World. I just loved it, and was very disappointed that I wasn’t able to buy it at her estate sale. Apparently two of my cousins wanted it, too. 😊 I’m looking forward to this project, and just hope mine is as pretty as hers was.

How to Make a Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt Free Tutorial
This is not my first Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt block tutorial, but I do think it is better than the first. I’ve been quilting for a long time, but I continue to improve. I’ve been blogging for a short time, and I certainly hope that I’m getting better as I go. Better with writing, better with photography, and better with making directions as clear as possible while keeping them simple. That’s always the goal!
There are thousands of varieties of this quilt pattern out there, mine uses 2” strips, has six strips per set and my blocks finish at 9”.
A Variety of Quilt Block Options
You can vary any of those numbers to customize your quilt as you wish.
Use 2½” or 3” (or bigger!) strips.
Make strip sets with five, or seven or ten strips.
Really, the options are endless! Here are a couple of examples of what five, six and seven strips could look like in a block. I’m actually really happy with all of these color combinations, but especially that Halloween-inspired one. I *might* need to make myself a Halloween quilt!
Now, of course, your block size will vary based on the size of strips and numbers of strips involved. Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the options. Make sure to pin this for later.
This tutorial will have blocks made from six strips, that measure 2” by 12½”. I made 20 blocks, so I had 120 strips to start with.
Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt Block
Sew strips into pairs, and then sew three pairs together into each strip set.
I made mine with a neutral fabric (although not always the same neutral fabric) along the top edge.
Trim the edge to make straight, and then cut one 2” unit off the edge of the strip set.
Sew the rest of the strip set into a tube, by sewing the free edge of the top strip to the free edge of the bottom strip.
Cut the tube into five 2” tubes.
I know, I know, it’s hard to see the tubes in the last two photos. Here’s another look.
Now, do you see the purple circle highlighting the seam between the bottom two seams in the photo above? Here it is again:
This is the seam that you are going to cut open (with scissors or with a seam ripper) from one tube. This will be the second column in your block. Check out the purple arrows, that seam that you cut open is now the top and bottom edge of the column. Note, you are NOT cutting apart that circled seam from the column of 6 squares. You are cutting that same seam, but from one of the tubes to open it up so that it becomes the next column.
Next up, the seam between the dark purple and light purple squares at the bottom of column two. In each subsequent tube, you are cutting apart the seam that separates the two bottom squares from the previous column. Repeat with all five tubes.
Pin, pin, pin every seam!
Pin every seam, and sew the columns into pairs. Then sew the three pairs together. Just pin every single seam, and go slowly. And THAT is a Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt block.
Having a neutral fabric as the top strip in every group means that I’ll have a neutral square running through the center of every block. Repeat to make as many blocks as needed.
Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt
Again, there are lots of different options for what you do with your blocks. All of your blocks will have the center diagonal squares angling down. But, if you turn your block 90*, you’ll have a block with the center diagonal squares angling up.
Twisting and turning your blocks throughout the quilt results in lots of different options. Here are three of them:
Now, I like all of these options, but I was limited in what I made with my blocks. I made my strip sets one day, and set them aside to make my blocks several weeks later. Apparently, I used a scant ¼” seam when I made the strip sets, but a full ¼” when I made the blocks.
My blocks aren’t square! ☹
They’re close, it’s only about a ¼” of an inch difference total between length and width of the block, but with that many seams to match up, it just made sense to not turn any blocks sideways, and keep them all the same, so I have neutral squares running diagonally down my entire quilt. And I really like how it turned out.
But, it’s a good reminder for me (and maybe for you too?) to be both accurate and consistent when sewing seams. Little mistakes add up in a hurry! You can check out a tutorial here for how to make your seam allowances as accurate as possible .
So, there you have it. How to make a Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt! Which block size do you prefer? Here’s another copy of the size chart:

Very nicely written tutorial, but the picture of the quilt you made is not a Trip Around the World! Your title is misleading. TATW is usually in a diamond layout. Your blocks can obviously be used to construct a true Trip Around The World. It’s all in the way you set the completed blocks.
Yes, as explained, they are scrappy trip around the world blocks and I had to adjust my layout due to my blocks being slightly rectangular instead of square.
You make patterns easy! Thank you

In this Stashin’ with Stephanie video, I show you how to take a fat quarter bundle and turn it into a fabulous modernized version of the traditional Trip Around the World Quilt.
To make the quilt you just strip piece your fabrics into a large tube and then cut them apart to create the “around the world” part of the quilt. Then by picking seams in a specific order, you get a cool look of the fabrics spreading out across the quilt. To make it modern, instead of having the fabrics fan out from the center of the quilt, it will fan out from the top left corner.
I used Alison Glass Road Trip for this quilt.
The quilt finishes 52″ x 78″.

Scrappy Trip Around the World Tutorial
A trip around the world quilt is steeped in tradition. It’s a classic. In fact, I have one of these beautiful quilts made by my great grandmother . I thought it would be fun to draw on this connection to the past and create a scrappy trip around the world tutorial.
While someday I would love to make a quilt like my great grandmother’s. Today is not that day. I’m keeping it simple with smaller, jellyroll friendly blocks. You can find a great selection of jellyrolls Fat Quarter Shop ” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>here .
Or you can cut your own. I would recommend using an AccuQuilt ” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”> Accuquilt Go with the 2 1/2″ strip cutter. It will make cutting all those strips supper fast. I have a bunch of low volume prints I plan to cut this way. I plan on using various bright and bold strips to create my x and o’s. Looking forward to seeing how this evolves.
Don’t have a Go? Bummer! You could use the tips from my post on accurate cutting .
Depending on how you arrange your strips you can have a very scrappy quilt. My favorite kind!
Or one with a more controlled quilt like this trip around the world I helped my friend Cynthia create.
However you choose to create your quilt. I hope you will find my trip around the world quilt tutorial useful.
Make sure to share you quilts with me. You know I’d love to see what you have created. Email me or better yet, share it in my Facebook group .

Love this quilt, try to make one at least once a year out of my scraps, use of a 3-1/2 or a 4 inch squares covers my double bed almost to the floor and a Queen about halfway down, is worked from the corners in to the center which makes it hard to repair

The Mock-Up First I colored a mock-up on graph paper, which is how I decided the dimensions of the quilt. There would be 11 rows across and 11 columns down, and each finished square would measure 1.5″, which would make a finished quilt 16.5″ square. Much more manageable than a queen size quilt!
Take a look at the four identical segments I talked about before. The ‘X’s down the vertical and horizontal centers of the quilt divide it into four segments and the top half of the quilt is a mirror image of the bottom half. Similarly, the left half of the quilt is a mirror image of the right half.
Fabric Selection & Preparation I picked out 5 fat quarters that were light, medium and dark greens and reds.
They were washed, ironed to remove all wrinkles, and cut into 2″ strips.
Making the Strip Set and Tube The strips were then sewn into a strip set going from lightest, light, medium, to dark and medium.
The raggedy ends of the strip set were cut off and starting from the bottom of this strip set, each strip of fabric was assigned a number from 1 to 5. Turning the strip set over, with the wrong side up, I joined the first (Fabric 1) and last (Fabric 5) strips to form a tube and pinned them in place.
The two end strips were sewn together to form a tube and the strip set was cut into 2″ segments. One strip set yielded 10 two-inch segments, so a total of 2-1/2 strip sets were used to make this small quilt. The top section needed 11 segments and the bottom section needed 11 segments, the horizontal center strip of the quilt needed 2 segments and an extra 2-1/2″ square was required for the dead center of the quilt. Therefore, 11+11+2=24 two inch segments + 1 two-inch square of fabric 5 were needed in total.
To keep the 2″ segments from scattering, they were placed in a paper-mache bucket that cost $1.00 at JoAnn Fabric and Crafts.

This Around the world bed quilt is so stunning. I love the colors and the style of this quilt. I am new to quilting so as many times as I read this it is still a little confusing but i will save it for future use I hope. I really wish there was a video to this or one similar to understand it more. I still would love to see some finished ones from other readers for some inspiration. Anyone make one?

If you click on my picture of the quilt below, it pops up into a full-size picture so you can see both the back and the front of the quilt I made using this pattern. The instructions given here are really easy to follow without a video. I fully intend to make more quilts with other color combinations.
Sorry! You have to click on the picture of my quilt that appears above in the section "Images from other Quilters" to get the full-size image.

I love this quilt! Strip piecing, nesting seams make it quick and easy. I also made the backing and binding from the same fabric as the front with a few stray blocks thrown in for good measure.

sweet! the backing makes it absolutely delicious!
Are the instructions for adding the “extra trip” in your pattern in you shop?
Hi Pat - thank you for stopping by! The Scrappy Day Trip Quilt Pattern (pdf file) does not include instructions for the "extra trip". The concept is however the same - the Scrappy Day Trip Quilt is also block based, and each "block" is strip pieced and constructed as far as that is possible, before laying out and sewing the quilt top together. Rita
Magic! Love it!
Just one word.... beautiful!!
Do you explain in your PDF pattern how to sew this together without having to sew it in long diagonal strips? You made reference to adjusting the pattern so that you were able to work on one block at a time. I have looked closely at your white squares to see if they were made of triangles but I'm not seeing that. How did you do it? Thanking you in advance. I do just love this quilt and would love to make it also.
Hi Maxine - the Scrappy Day Trip Quilt Pattern is not sewn in long diagonal rows. Instead it is a block based design with partial construction of each block - some of which is strip pieced. All patchwork pieces are squares (no triangles). I hope that is helpful? Rita
Wow! This is one of your most beautiful quilts!! Well done. Those little pops of black are just the right touch.
I love this quilt. I can see some of the new fabrics too. Well done Rita
What a beautiful quilt............thanks for sharing !
Simply so beautiful. Thank you for sharing and the inspiration! ♡
Thanks Rita for explaining. I'll buy your Scrappy Day Trip Pattern. I think I'm imagining how to do it, but I'll purchase the pattern, just so I know for sure. You have a wonderful sense of color. Thanks for sharing.
It's beautiful!
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment! I really appreciate it. Comments are published after review. Feel free to ask questions and I will answer either here or by email, as is appropriate.
