Cheap car hire in the United States

Top tips for hiring a car in the united states.

  • Many travelers choose to rent a car in the United States, as it is the best mode of transport for covering short or long distances, allowing plenty of freedom and more flexibility to explore unique landscapes. There are plenty of iconic routes that serve as road trip destinations and allow drivers to visit several states, including the classic Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Oregon Trail, and the Eastern Seaboard.
  • When driving in the United States, it is important to note the rules around schools and school buses. Yellow warning lights often operate in school zones, requiring traffic to slow down. The law also states that when a school bus stops to pick up children and uses its red flashing lights, traffic traveling in both directions must stop until the bus has continued moving again.
  • The rules on child car seat use in the United States also vary from state to state, but when in doubt, it is best to seat all kids under the age of 12 in an appropriate restraint system in the back of the car. Rental agencies can usually provide a range of different baby and child seats, with daily prices at around $14 with an agency such as Thrifty.
  • Most rental agencies allow their cars to be taken into any state in the continental United States, although it is always worth checking this in advance. Avis, for example, only allows cars rented in Texas to be driven within the state borders. Drivers wishing to visit the neighboring country of Mexico or Canada should also be sure to check the rental agency’s regulations before they rent a car in the United States. Some, such as Dollar, allow cross-border travel from certain locations only and impose an additional insurance charge of around $28 per day.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in United States for $75 or less
  • Book your car hire in United States at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate car hire in United States are around 14% cheaper than other car types, on average

US road trips: car-hire essentials

Best car-hire comparison sites.

Kayak.com The most popular travel search engine, which offers the best rates from all the major firms, as well as checking what rates are being offered by rival search engines.

VroomVroomVroom.com Specialist car hire website with (perhaps) the best name.

Expedia.com Big search engine that finds the rates, as well as handling bookings.

Best time of year to book

Naturally enough, rental rates rise during peak travel seasons, and these vary across the US. Summer, and holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, are peak time everywhere, but local events, gatherings and celebrations can cause rates to spike. If you attempt getting a rental car in Florida on the weekend of the Georgia-Florida college football game in October or during the Daytona 500 in February and you'll see what we mean. Generally, you'll find the best combinations of good weather and low rates during the "shoulder" seasons around April or October.

Round trip or one-way trips

No matter what time of year you go, one of the best ways to save money is to plan your trip so you start and finish in the same place, avoiding drop-off fees. One-way drop-off fees, which often get disguised or hidden within the quoted rate, can add $100 a week or more to the total.

Location, location, location

Small, city centre car-hire companies charge less than those at airport locations, especially when you factor in the surcharges. Of the web search engines, Kayak does the best job of mapping car-hire locations away from the airports.

Fees and taxes

Added costs you can expect at airport companies include anything from "concession fees" to "facility charges" (sometimes both, adding $10-$20 per day to any rental.) One of the biggest contrasts can be found in the usually cheap state of Texas; at airports in Houston and Dallas, local fees and taxes add more than 50% to daily and weekly rates, an upcharge that some companies may neglect to mention until you arrive.

1960 red and white Chevrolet Corvette

This is perhaps the most maddening part about hiring a car, especially after a long flight. Staff at the service desks will bombard you with acronyms that represent optional extras in a tone of voice that makes you feel reckless not to accept.

Collision or Loss Damage Waiver (CDW or LDW) – these free you from any worry of damage to the car in exchange for a fee (anywhere from $10 to $30 a day). Whereas Supplementary Loss Protection (SLP, usually around $10 a day), helps increase your coverage for the extra fee. Meanwhile, Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) duplicates any health insurance coverage you already have.

Your existing policies may already offer you some cover, especially for potential liability, and your credit card may cover some collision or damage costs. Look into all of these possibilities well before you get to the car-hire counter, because the question of insurance is complicated and expensive. The cost of insurance to cover potential loss or damage can easily exceed the basic rate of the car rental, so consider your options carefully. Pre-paid insurance is almost always the best value.

Be Flexible

If you are open to different routes, then you may be able to benefit from one of the great open secrets of the car-hire world: the size of their fleets varies from season to season. For example, in winter, travellers flock to Florida and Arizona but as the season tapers off companies need to move the cars to other markets often offering sweet deals to drivers willing to help them out. Every April and May, Hertz offers a "Drive Out" deal from Arizona and Florida, bringing one-way, unlimited mileage rentals down below $20 a day. I once paid $29 a week, barely $100 in total, for a car I drove for three weeks from Florida to San Francisco.

Major or minor?

Avis , the second-largest car hire company in the US, used to run an effective ad campaign saying: " We're Number 2 – We Try Harder ." Whether or not that's true, there are differences from one company to another, and when comparing prices it is good to know why some cars are cheaper than others. Often, the car you get from a "major" (such as Hertz or Avis) will be newer and cleaner than a similar class of car from a lower-priced competitor. Also, larger companies tend to have more branches with longer opening hours, which can make a big difference if and when something goes wrong and you need to swap cars in the middle of a trip.

Dollar and Thrifty are two of the biggest budget firms (though they were bought by Hertz last year). Alamo , is one of the cheapest, with prices averaging around 10% less than Hertz.

The youngest of the major firms, Enterprise , has one "unique selling point" – it offers to pick you up wherever you are, rather than make you go to its offices. Enterprise also has a reputation for transparent pricing, with the fewest hidden charges and fees, which has won it high rankings from consumer watchdogs such as JD Power .

Pre-pay or not pre-pay?

Unlike airlines, car-hire companies usually do not require you to make a deposit to hold your booking. This makes it worth keeping an eye on rates as there's no charge to change your booking, or to make a number of different bookings just in case. Once your plans are set, however, it is often possible to save a little more by paying for the car hire in advance. One valuable resource is Hotwire , the pre-pay subsidiary of Expedia, where you can find good deals saving you as much as 20% off any other deal from all the different car hire companies. In particular, Hotwire offers the best prices on insurance, charging as little as $9 a day for full collision, loss and damage coverage, for which the individual car-hire companies charge $15-25.

Alternatives to car-hire companies

Driveaways This is when you agree to transport another person's car from one destination to another, paying only for fuel along the way. Driveaways aren't for everyone; they can add hassle if the cars' owners live far away from the airport, limit you to the most direct routes, and have strict time limits, expecting you to drive 400 miles a day or more. But if money's tight, and you want to add some excitement to your tour, Driveaways can be brilliant.

RideJoy.com

Car pools RideJoy.com and the new iPhone app, iThumb , are two of the more innovative co-operative travel options online, but the best range of real rides and riders is still found on the listings website Craigslist.org . Click on your location, then look under the "Community" heading for the topic, then search under "Rideshare".

Something Completely Different You may also want to get a special vehicle for some or all of your trip: a classic Cadillac to cruise around Elvis Presley's Memphis, for example, a Stars and Stripes Harley-Davidson for that Easy Rider experience. These are all available, for a price: "exotic" or "adrenaline" cars can cost $500 a day or more, and are mainly available in glitzy places such as Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

And if you really want to dive deep into Route 66 in a little red Corvette, or cruise a Camaro along the Pacific Coast Highway, check out the fine cars available from Blacktop Candy's a well-regarded tour and car-hire company based in North Carolina.

RVs and camper vans The biggest RV rental firm is called CruiseAmerica offering vehicles for anywhere between three and seven people. They cost $100 a day, plus 30¢ a mile, and on top of that you need to pay for a campsite (about $50 a night), and fuel (another 30¢ a mile). So for a 1,000-mile, week-long trip from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon and back, expect to pay close to $2,000. If you simply want to camp in comfort at a music festival or the Burning Man festival , RVs are definitely the way to go, and for a smaller, more wallet-friendly RV experience, look into hiring a VW camper van, like the fully-kitted pop-tops available for around $1,000 a week from San Francisco-based California Campers .

5 Reasons why a car rental is the best choice:

  • Plan your trip way ahead of the traveling day. If you are supposed to spend a longer time on the road it is important to priorly plan your itinerary like where you are to stay, which routes are to be followed, and what are you going to do along the way. In a vast country like the USA, it is easy to misjudge the time you would take to reach from point A to point B, planning ahead would help you to have a rough estimation of the days of your trip.
  • Maps (both GPS and physical fold-outs) are one of the most important accessories for your road trip in the USA.
  • Try not to get into the main city areas during rush hours, it is hectic and time-consuming.
  • Know priorly about the driving rules for the US state you are in, the speed limits will change, and the driving rules might as well change in some locations, keep in mind to drive wisely.
  • Make sure you have a road safety kit with you, this will be helpful in case of an emergency.

What type of driver's license do I need to rent a car in the U.S.?

Many travellers ask whether they need to have an international driver's license for their road trip in California or elsewhere in the U.S.

The answer is simple: it is best to have an international license when driving in the U.S. if you want to avoid any hassles and rent a car without difficulties. However, it is not mandatory.

According to U.S. law, your ESTA travel authorization and a valid license from your country of residence should be enough to rent a car.

But in practice, more and more car rental companies require an international license to rent a car. For this reason, it is advisable to find out before your USA road trip which companies require an international license.

Note that your license must use the Latin alphabet.

Principal and additional drivers must have had their driver's license for at least 12 months.

These conditions are different for car rental in Canada .

What is the minimum age for renting a car in the U.S.?

To rent a car in Las Vegas  or elsewhere in the U.S., you must be at least 21 years of age and have a credit card in your name for the deposit.

In addition, please note that drivers from 21 to 24 years of age are required to pay an additional fee to cover the higher insurance cost. This fee is about $30 a day.

Note that the driver's license of the principal driver and the credit card used for the deposit MUST be in the same name.

Do I need a child car seat?

For a Western USA road trip  or elsewhere in the U.S., child car seats must meet NHTSA Federal Safety Standards.

If your seat meets these standards, bring it! It’s free on the plane and your child will be as comfortable as at home.

Child car seats with an ISOFIX or LATCH system are authorized by car rental companies and the government.

If your seat does not have a LATCH/ISOFIX system or it is not certified FMVSS, you will not be covered by the rental company's basic insurance or additional insurance options .

In that case, you will need to rent a car seat with your vehicle. This option will be payable in advance or at the rental office, depending on the rental company.

Note that not all rental companies offer this option.

What is the price of gas in the USA?

When planning a Western USA road trip  or elsewhere in the U.S., you need to have a gas budget.

Be aware of fluctuating gas prices. Finding a balance between comfort and consumption when choosing your rental vehicle can help you save on gas.

Gas generally costs about half as much in the U.S. as in Europe. Many websites provide up-to-the-minute gas prices in the U.S. Find out more by clicking below...

Best car rental sites to book your next road trip

Becky Blaine

When it comes to booking rental cars, there are quite a few websites to choose from. If you're not set on booking directly with one of the big national chains like Enterprise, Avis, Budget, Hertz or Alamo, you could potentially save even more money by using one of the options below.

Whether you have elite status with a car rental company or not, there are different ways to compare rental companies and find the best pricing for your next rental.

We always recommend pricing a rental directly with a national chain website so you have an idea of the going rate before moving on to the aggregator sites that compare multiple offers.

Costco Travel

For Costco members, this is a no-brainer. Costco negotiates rates on everything from vacation packages and cruises to car rentals for its members. The site allows you to compare prices from participating Alamo, Avis, Budget and Enterprise locations and shows a grid of available car types and prices across those companies so you can make the best decision.

For the purposes of pricing, an airport was chosen below, but once you enter your desired city, you can select different locations within that city from a map and compare pricing.

usa road trip car hire

There are a few rules for renting with Costco: The primary renter needs to be a Costco member, but additional drivers do not, and drivers must be 25 years of age or older.

Once you've selected your car and are ready to place a reservation, you'll need to provide your Costco membership number. One of the perks of Costco Travel is that you can make a reservation without worrying about paying until you pick up your rental car.

AutoSlash is a car rental aggregator, meaning it pulls information from many different rental sites to allow you to compare pricing. One of its interesting features is that it allows you to enter any memberships, credit cards or frequent flyer programs you belong to, and it will search for applicable discounts.

TPG's Katie Genter wrote a comprehensive guide to using AutoSlash for rental car shopping.

Once you enter in all relevant information, AutoSlash will email you a link to view your quotes. You can then choose to book now and pay now or pay later.

One of the interesting features that AutoSlash offers is the ability to track rental car prices. Once you've made a reservation with free cancellation, go back to the AutoSlash website and fill out the form to track price drops for your rental . You will need your current reservation information to fill out the form.

You will then be able to check the boxes for any of the rental car companies you'd like to track and also choose only to receive an email alert if the price drops below what you have currently reserved. This could potentially save you money and allow you to rebook at a lower rate.

Often referred to as the "Airbnb of rental car sites," Turo has definitely caught on in cities across the U.S. and even some Canadian provinces and the United Kingdom. In short, Turo is a peer-to-peer car rental site that can also be accessed and managed through an app.

Many TPG staffers have used Turo and share positive experiences in the TPG guide to renting with Turo . Some of the advantages of using this service include the lower fee for drivers under 25 years of age, that delivery service can sometimes be available, and renting from a local could be more convenient than seeking out a rental car location.

The one downside would be that you usually have to return the car to the same location where you picked it up, so if you're looking for a one-way rental, a traditional rental car site might work better for you in that situation.

A few quick test searches found rental prices equal to or less expensive than traditional rental car companies. The handy map will show you the locations of all the rentals available in your area for the dates that you search.

While Turo doesn't have airline partners like the big car rental companies, there are still opportunities to earn points and miles on your rentals . Since Turo codes in the travel category, be sure to use a credit card that earns you the most points for travel.

Maybe you've only searched Expedia for hotels or flights, but it also offers rental cars and the option to book all trip components together if you'd like. When searching for hotels, you can check the box to add a flight and add a car.

Expedia's car rental interface is pretty straightforward and convenient. You can use filters to search for options like refundable rentals and the ability to pay at the counter. It's also a transparent booking site, meaning you will see the company you're renting with before deciding to book.

In 2022, Expedia Group announced a new rewards program called One Key which would unify rewards across its family of brands: Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz and vacation rental site Vrbo. There's still no official launch date in 2023 for this new program.

If you are a AAA member, check the AAA website for your area to see if there are car rental deals. The AAA site will search multiple car rental sites for you to find the best deals. If you aren't already a AAA member, you can read the TPG guide to AAA membership to learn more about the benefits and determine if it's worth it for you to join.

Some of the exclusive member benefits for car rentals include up to 20% off the base rate in the U.S. and Canada, up to 10% off the base rate on international rentals, free use of one child safety seat, and no charge for up to four additional drivers who are AAA members.

There are additional exclusive benefits through AAA's partnership with Hertz , such as 10% off a tank of gas when purchasing gas at local prices, and you can return the vehicle with any amount of fuel. The young renters fee is also waived for members ages 20-24.

To start the search process, I had to enter my Hertz membership number, and then it asked me to verify my full name and ZIP code to validate that I was a AAA member. The search feature offers pay-now and pay-at-the-counter options as well as AAA member rates and standard rates. You can even filter by car company, and the top of the search screen shows you what discounts are available with each company.

Where to in the USA?

Between Alaska in the far northwest and the finger of Florida pointing out to the southeast, there are 50 states—including the Hawaiian archipelago—and 4 million miles of highway to explore in your hire car. Whether you are planning a laid-back beach crawl around the Gulf of Mexico, venturing out on a vineyard tour of Napa Valley or exploring Los Angeles’ quirky neighbourhoods, there are plenty of places to discover. On many a bucket-list is Route 66, the so-called Main Street of America. Spanning from the sky-scraping city of Chicago in the northeast to the bright lights of Las Vegas, and veering through the ranches of Missouri, the deserts of Arizona and past the mighty Grand Canyon, this iconic route offers some of the best road trips in the USA. Over in Florida, the Sunshine State’s flora-rich Everglades and balmy Florida Keys can be explored via the 150-mile US 1, aka the Ocean Highway—which links Miami with Key West. Driving along the impressive Seven Mile Bridge with the glimmering Gulf of Mexico to one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other is certainly memorable. Once back on the mainland, thrill-seekers can make a beeline for Orlando’s big-name theme parks. Nature lovers, meanwhile, can get their fix along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The 2,200-mile track links Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia and weaves through 14 states along the way. The whole route may be a little too much to hike, so choose its best bits—Tennessee offers some spectacular forest routes—and drive the rest of the way. And for history buffs? The 1,400-mile Blues Highway that connects New Orleans to the city of Wyoming in Minnesota makes for a memorable road trip. It received its nickname in acknowledgement of the migration of African-Americans from the rural Mississippi Delta in the south to St Louis and Chicago between 1910 and 1970. Hire a car with Avis in the USA and you’ll gain precious access to this fascinating country’s many sights and cultural attractions.

Coupé or convertible? Unlock Avis in the USA

Come city, major town, hotel or airport, we've got you covered in America. Grab a classic jeep, convertible or coupé, or perhaps an elegant town car or a spacious SUV? Whatever you fancy for your tour of these united states, we have the perfect car for you.

And, you don’t have to drive full-circle: make the most of one way car hire across the USA.

Road Trips in the United States of America

Road trips can be as extensive as you like here: it's over 2,500 miles and 40 hours' drive from New York's Lady Liberty to Los Angeles' "Hollywood" sign. That journey would lead you along iconic highways, like desert-thoroughfare Route 66, before hitting the rugged crags of the Grand Canyon. Or, how about a classic Californian road trip? From San Francisco, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take Interstate 80 –  the transcontinental Lincoln Highway of old – through the vineyards of the Napa Valley and the looming wilderness of the Sierra Nevada, before plunging into the mature pine, cedar and oak forests of Yosemite Valley. As Lonely Planet puts it, Yosemite “makes even Switzerland look like God’s practice run.” The 150-mile drive from Miami to Key West is another perfect road trip. Pass through the Everglades National Park before hitting the scenic Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys. Stop off along the way for a swim with the turtles and sharks, sunset sailing, or maybe some deep sea fishing, before arriving in Key West. Be sure to Visit Hemingway’s house and his six-toed cats, try a slice of the famous key lime pie and party until late in the bars and restaurants of Duval Street. Wherever your interests lie, you’ll find a road trip to suit. Your hire car in the USA awaits … and the open road lies ahead.

Two classic routes

A pair of dazzling stretches of track that should be on your U.S. driving-holiday radar. Highway No. 1 The Pacific Coast Highway winds its way scenically along the California coast. Flanked with palm trees, passing the cityscapes of Greater Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu and Santa Barbara, it travels through picturesque hills to the cliffs of Big Sur, probably the most beautiful stretch of track at Monterey. Take the highway north via the famous Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco., the boundless blue of the Pacific Ocean your constant companion. Venture south and a detour to San Diego and the Mexican border town of Tijuana is easily possible, as is an inland jaunt to the beautiful, Yucca-tree-full Joshua Tree National Park. Route 66 This historic East-West stretch of road allows countless insights into the American history and way of life. The road goes through three time zones and offers something from everyone. There are the major cities such as Chicago, the largest city in the Midwest and the starting point of Route 66, and Los Angeles, the terminus. But more evocatively, there is also the lonely gas station, the iconic roadside motel. Travel through the "wild west" states of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before reaching the coast in California. From Chicago in the east, you can make a detour to the Great Lakes. The Niagara Falls are (by American standards) not too far away. There are countless opportunities to detour off Route 66: the glittering gambling city of Las Vegas, the salt desert Death Valley, the mighty Grand Canyon and many other spectacular natural wonders such as Zion National Park.

Our top tips to plan a road trip in France in a camper van

Inspiration

Le voyage en van entre amis à Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, en Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 21 March 2024, updated on 17 April 2024

Some people like deciding where to go at the drop of a hat, and this is what is so appealing about a holiday in a camper van. But just like any other holiday, it still requires some planning. Road trips around France in a van are becoming more and more popular. There’s no better feeling than waking up with a view of the dunes in the Landes or across the Alpine peaks. So follow this guide!

Choose a specialist hire company

In France, specialist van hire companies can provide you with a top-quality service (fully comprehensive insurance cover, recent vehicles that are kept in good condition, etc.). Some of the most well-known companies are Blacksheep , We Van and Van-Away .

  • Good to know: some hire companies offer unlimited mileage, others don't. Some allow a second driver free-of-charge, for others this is an extra option that will cost you more, etc.

Rencontre insolite au sommet de l'Artzamendi, au Pays basque lors d'un voyage en van.

Another option is to hire from a private individual (or a car-sharing scheme)

© Wikicampers – Expérience du voyage nomade dans les Landes à Seignosse

Wikicampers , Yescapa , Ouicar... Private van owners usually offer their vehicles for hire via one of these platforms, which also takes care of the management, security, insurance cover and deals with the transactions between the owner and holidaymaker.

The advantage of this option is that the rental price is usually more competitive. The condition of the vehicle is usually checked via the platform application, in your presence. Another top tip: if you are looking to try out a vehicle because you’d like to buy one, it would probably be easier for you to find the right model if you go through a specialist hire company. Last but not least, this is the most eco-friendly option because you won’t be hiring a van from a fleet that is only used for rental purposes.

Choose the right van that is suited to your needs

© Wikicampers – Camping-car sillonnant entre les montagnes pyrénéennes

A combi van, utility vehicle or a pop-top camper van? An over-cab or low-profile motorhome? For every trip, there is a perfect van. Before setting off, make sure you take the time to choose the right vehicle for the number of people and with the right level of comfort to suit your needs.

Choosing a van with or without toilets might seem like an amusing detail, but it could make a big difference to your trip. And insulation and heating would be important factors to consider in winter.

A van adapted to off-road terrain would be better suited to trips off the beaten track than a motorhome that is more difficult to manoeuvre. In some vans you can stand up, in others you can't. This might seem insignificant for some travellers, but for others it would make a big difference.

Download useful applications

Any seasoned fan of the van life will tell you that the top priority is finding the perfect place to sleep. There’s no better feeling than waking up with a view of the dunes in the Landes or the Alpine peaks to start off your day with a smile. In France, some destinations are more welcoming than others when it comes to camper vans and motorhomes. Wild camping is subject to regulations.

In the Basque Country or Brittany, you might not always be able to stay overnight along the coast for free, especially during the peak season. Don’t panic, wherever you are, there’s always a plan B. Use the Park4night application to find an authorised parking area near you. It was designed specifically with this use in mind. Use the filter to search for the type of location you’re looking for (campsite, staying with the locals, free parking area, rest area, etc.). You’ll find plenty of useful reviews to get an idea of these locations before choosing one, and many of the reviews include photos. You can get any extra information you might need from maps.me and Google maps, and these applications will also help you if you want to venture off the beaten track.

  • Top tip: choose the locations that have been given the least number of reviews. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, opt for a parking area that is at the departure point of a hiking trail, rather than alongside a busy road. It’s often a good idea to spend the night away from the main roads.

Plan your route

© Atypix x WeVan – Préparer son itinéraire dans un champ du Haut-Doubs

Just like your luggage, the route needs to be as simple as possible. The advantage of a road trip in a camper van is the freedom it gives you. You don’t need to plan the entire route out in advance but you can use the apps we’ve mentioned to decide on the mileage you’re aiming for each day. As a general rule, try not to plan too many miles on your road trip in France. A good indication is to spend around 2-3 hours on the road each day. This will limit fatigue. And you’ll have more time to make the most of a place you’d like to explore. There’s nothing like changing your plans to suit your needs, and adapting to the weather!

Be aware of the basic rules

On a trip in a camper van in France, you’ll be embarking on a whole new experience, where you are free to travel around as you please. But this independence does not mean you need to be completely self-sufficient.

The number one rule to respect for a successful trip is to travel light. Leaving your belongings and your daily comfort behind you is all part and parcel of the experience. For example: choose to use backpacks and lightweight camping gear rather than suitcases and fancy camping equipment than is better suited to staying in one place. And you’ll be delighted to be reminded that the lighter the camper van, the less fuel you’ll consume!

Another basic rule is to respect the locals: avoid making excessive noise at night (this also applies to other tourists nearby) and leave your overnight locations exactly as you found them, i.e. clean. It’s all about being respectful. For example, you should avoid using parking areas that are used by the locals to do their shopping, or those used by holidaymakers to go to the beach during the day.

Other useful precautions include being aware of any regulations regarding forest fires. A campfire might add a magical touch to your experience, but in France, you are not permitted to light fires in a national park, a protected nature reserve or in forests during the summer or in periods of drought. In any case, if you are not sure of the rules, it is better to avoid lighting fires.

Take what you need for the vehicle with you

© Vanlifegoeson x WeVan / Pause déjeuner dans un van

If you hire your vehicle from a professional company, chances are you won’t have much to think about, if anything at all (read the following paragraph). Pretty much everything you need for cooking will be provided. You’ll also most likely be provided with bed linen, a camping table and chairs (make sure you check before setting off).

The most organised of travellers will bring a toolbox, engine oil, a piece of cloth to wipe your hands after checking the oil levels (when the engine is cold and the ignition is switched off), a small air compressor for the tyres, etc. But with the breakdown cover, you’re not likely to need any tools whatsoever!

A checklist of the essentials you’ll need:

© Vanlifegoeson x WeVan / Bien équipée pour un café au grand air

Paper versions of a travel guide and road map, a Swiss army knife, a camping stove, USB chargers and plug strips, plenty of water, solar- or battery-powered torches, head lamp, hammock, microfibre towel, Tupperware boxes and containers, bin bags, etc.

Are you still with us? If so, that means you’re ready to set off on the roads of France for your first trip in a camper van. All that’s left for us to do is wish you “Bon voyage”!

  • Tips and suggestions:

Are you planning on travelling in an electric van? You'll need to find out how far you can go with a full charge. Depending on the model, this can vary from a hundred kilometres to almost 800 km, which would have a huge impact on how you plan your trip and your route in the camper van. There are plenty of tools you can use to plan your route, and they will suggest the best places to stop and charge your vehicle along the way: A Better Route Planner or Charge Map . To benefit from an overnight charge, opt for campsites with electric charging terminals. This is the ideal solution so you don’t need to worry about it overnight. Getting around the local area by bike is always a good idea, especially if you are staying on a campsite or with the locals. If you’re planning on cycling, you’ll need a bike rack. This can be booked as an option from your hire company
