Cycle Croatia Tour

Cycle Croatia

The tour was an amazing experience in terms of personal service, compatibility of our group, my equipment, and areas explored. Our guides, Tin and Devour, did their best to accommodate our requests in this very busy summer season. Our accommodations were lacking about 30% of the time however, due to no fault of the guides. We had to haul our luggage UP and I mean UP cobblestoned streets for what seemed like forever to get to a less than suitable room, and this after a LONG day of cycling. Really put a damper on the tour, that is for sure. My bike was great, but others had difficulties and they were gracious about riding with bad equipment - I would not have been so tolerant, nor do I think they should have been. Devour was an amazing support through out.

Cycle the Dalmatian Coast

Very scenic views for most of the trip, however the clouds and rain disturbed our views and interrupted the rides. Our tour guide David was an exceptional, experienced leader and showed great care about our safety. Dan, who drove behind us was helpful to provide tips about shifting our gears I would have preferred greater communication prior to the trip starting since I asked about details regarding the itinerary. It is important to wear cycling shorts, for appropriate padding on long rides and maintaining comfort. My bum is still recovering.

Bike Dalmatian Islands – Mountain Bike Trans Croatia South Tour

Bike Dalmatian Islands – Mountain Bike Trans Croatia South

Aside from the fact that Croatia is absolutely spectacular, and idyllic in every way for a Viking trip, I felt that the way the bike trip was organized, was very confusing, lacking enough, detail, and handholding for a novice. The problem always was our luggage how to get from one point to another and worry about what happens to our luggage, contrary, to my understanding, we are selves had to take the luggage on the ferry with us, which was extremely difficult to push your bike up and into a ferry with your luggage. Many other cases are even when we got off the ferry and our luggage had to go to a hotel. There was confusion and or there wasn’t something arrange for the luggage to take it to the hotel, so what we thought would be taken care of in terms of the hassle of having a luggage on a bike trip was an essence still a hassle and deterred from the freedom that we were looking for on a bike trip . Our local man on the ground Daniel Piccini was fantastic. Quality bikes were amazing. He was very efficient and helpful and solve a lot of our problems that Anessa should’ve been solved by the company organizer, which is tour radar. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t use to a radar again I just simply means I would ask a lot more questions and want a lot more detail before undertaking such a trip.

The Dalmatian Coast Classic-Croatia guided Bike Tour Tour

The Dalmatian Coast Classic-Croatia guided Bike Tour

I went on my first tour with M10 about 3 years ago now and since that time I've been back to Split to visit and ride with them more times than I can remember. I think at this point I've ridden with nearly every guide there! The first tour I took was the Classic and it was phenomenal. Everything from the guides, the food, the accommodation and of course the ride exceeded my expectations. Croatia is an amazing country full of wonderful people and beautiful places and booking a tour with M10 is by far the best introduction to all that it has to offer.

The World’s Coolest Bike Tours

These quirky bike trips will have you begging for more vacation days

These Bike Tours Kick Ass

VBT Tours: The Dalmatian Islands

VBT Tours 10-day ride through Croatia explores one of the world’s 10 most beautiful islands (according to Condé Nast Traveler , anyway), plus some funky asides, like a trip to observe the art of stonecutting; a jaunt to the Adriatic Sea; and even some Croatian cooking lessons from locals. Oh yeah: You’ll also ride bikes, a lot (with bonus swim time !). The route is fairly beginner-friendly, but there are additional challenges for riders looking for tougher stuff.

Ciclismo Classico’l Bike Across Belgium

Bikes? Check. Beer? Check. Cycle through the charming landscapes of the Flemish flatlands and the hills of Wallonia, all while taking in a wide range of Belgian beers . This tour offers access to more boutique breweries than any other in Europe, and that’s good news for cyclists who like their recovery drinks hoppy.

Ride & Seek’s Vietnam Untouched: Ha Giang

If you’re looking for some serious bragging rights and a chance to explore unridden terrain, Vietnam Untouched might be the tour for you. Even the tour directors warn that it’s “not for the faint of heart,” and as the first company to run a bike tour in the area, they would know. This is one of the “advanced riders recommended” tours on this list, with 60 to 100 miles a day of riding, including tons of climbing . (This might be the trip where you switch to a compact crank.) But the famed rice paddies and the gorgeous forests more than make up for the tough riding you’ll face on this badass adventure.

Great Explorations’ Morocco 10-Day Expedition

Riding through Morocco on bikes feels like being in an Indiana Jones movie, except it’s the real thing. This tour takes you on a camel safari into the desert where Berber musicians entertain around bonfires, before you get to retire to your private tent with oil lanterns. You’ll ride along quiet roads with Mount Toubcal in the distance, hike up to remote villages to meet with locals, ride into Essaouira, and see Marrakech in all its splendor—snake charmers included.

CaminoWays.com Camino de Santiago 14-Day Tour

On this 14 day tour, you’ll cycle 740 kilometers along the famous pilgrimage trail, from Pamplona to Santiago de Compostella, which certainly must rank as one of the most adventurous trips there is, according to Robbin McKinney of CaminoWays.com. She adds that this trip is only suitable to those up for a challenge, but the reward is luxurious: You stay in historic inns and Paradors each night as your luggage gets magically shuttled for you. Not into two weeks of riding? There’s an eight-day option as well, and both offer Classic and Luxe hotel options.

Blue Marble’s Mystery Tour

A trip without an itinerary? This isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s definitely a unique travel option. Every few years, Blue Marble offers a Mystery Trip somewhere in Europe. “That is, we ask for thousands of dollars and refuse to tell people where we are taking them,” the company explains. “Fortunately, we have a lot of faithful and trusting, not to say foolish, clients.” But pranks abound: “One year we actually got the station to put up a phony destination sign for the train as we ushered people aboard,” says trip organizer Nicolas Clifford.

Experience Plus’ 45-Day Saint Petersburg to Istanbul

The first trip that Experience Plus ran in 2006 was from St. Petersburg to Istanbul: 45 days of cycling. They have since run that trip—always changing some days here and there—four times. This year, the trek runs from Venice to Kalamata, Greece, across the eastern Adriatic, crossing from Italy to Croatia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, and Greece. It’s a long ride , but each day is a new, fun adventure .

Summer Feet’s Maine Art Trail

This is our tour pick for the art lovers. Maine is famous for its Maine Art Trail, a curated exploration of eight museums, and Summer Feet has partnered with them on a bike tour that visits each one. In addition to great cycling, the trip visits marine life painter Winslow Homer’s studio and the Olson House: the setting for “Christina’s World,” the iconic Andrew Wyeth painting.

Duvine’s Chef on Wheels Costa Brava Tour

If you’re a fan of slightly more refined bike tours, this might be your best option. Imagine coming in from a hard day on the bike and sitting down to a gourmet meal. Now imagine you’re doing it in Spain, and the chef— NYC ’s award-winning Seamus Mullen —is joining you on the ride. On this Catalonia-based trip, you’ll enjoy gorgeous scenery—mostly seaside—and even shop with Mullen at farmers markets for meal ingredients. You’ll also learn to cook, as Mullen shares his techniques during post-ride cooking classes. (There’s also a luxury schooner ride involved, so get ready to sip wine on the Mediterranean.)

Adventure Travel Group’s Cycling the Best of Slovenia

In Slovenia, you’ll find the Julian Alps, crystal clear rivers, great wine, world-class Karst caverns, and the famous Lipizzaner horse farm, all while cycling some of the same roads pros like Jani Brajkovic trained on. If you like switchbacks and climbing , you’re in luck. In addition to some lovely, relaxed rides through scenic forests and over to a Skocjan cave, you get to climb the Vrsic pass (all 24 switchbacks, hooray!), plus Slovenia’s highest road, the Mangart. The best of Slovenia is pretty darn good, but be ready to climb.

BikeTours.com Land of the Maharajas

India has its awe-inspiring Taj Mahal and its gritty-yet-fascinating Old Delhi (both of which you’ll visit on this bike tour ), but it’s the country roads between these sites and cities that make India really special. This 10-night guided tour features rural Rajasthan, where brightly-clad women in saris walk along the roads to the nearest well for water. Camels trot slowly and stoically along rural streets, while cows are always idling here and there. The people are friendly and welcoming. The temples are colorful and hypnotic. And the cycling is fantastic. Tour highlights include the regular rickshaw ride through Old Delhi and a visit to the Taj Majal; the option to participate in an interesting Aarti (religious ceremony) at a Hindu temple in Karauli; seeing tigers in Ranthambore National Park ; the historic towns of Pushkar and Jaipur; and the chance to cycle through rural Rajasthan.

BikeTours.com A Taste of Israel

A country of modernity and antiquity, Israel is becoming a prime destination for mountain bikers around the world. This six-night guided tour features a diverse sampling of Israel’s beautiful landscapes, like mountain ranges and hidden streams in the north; beaches and cities; and what comes to mind when we think of Israel—the Negev desert. Really, it will feel like a few tours rolled into one! Routes include singletrack unfrequented by the average tourist, that take travelers to some of the most beautiful and interesting spots in the country. The tour features rides along the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and—for those who miss the city—to Jerusalem for some urban cycling.

Van Gogh Tours in the Netherlands

Cycling next to tulip fields is a wholly unique experience. You can only do it in the Netherlands, and that’s what makes Van Gogh Tours so special. You’ll visit the Keukenhof Tulip Exhibition Center—fantastic if you’re really into the many different breeds of the flower, but beautiful even if you’re not—and head to iconic cities like The Hague. Windmills, lambs, villages, and sand dunes all make this trip unique, and nights are, of course, spent in nice hotels (all three- and four-star).

Limberlost in Oregon

Remote back roads, pristine singletrack , hearty meals, and premium support make a Limberlost trip an adventure you’ll never forget. Whether you’re looking for a weekend of shuttle assisted mountain biking or a seven-day trip across the State of Oregon, each trip centers around the team’s best campsites, recipes, and local road and trail knowledge. There are four options varying in difficulty and length, so you can pick which is best for you.

User Reviews

I just returned from the National Parks/Dalmatia tour in late August 2019 and it exceeded my expectations in pretty much everything!!! The views were just amazing, this is a beautiful country and they do a great job putting us on routes to safely see that beauty. If you have the extra time, do the National Park tour extension, the parks and riding are incredible! I went as a solo rider and met wonderful people from Australia & the US. The food was some of the best I've ever had in my life. As a gluten-free, pescatartian (fish only) I was a little worried about the food but this was the perfect trip for a fish lover and they even had GF bread at many of the locations. Petra said they focus on making sure the restaurants have great food and wine options, and they sure did!!! The courses were pretty hills and we had some more recreational riders and some pretty avid riders and all were accommodated. They have new Trek bikes that performed great. A couple riders had e-bikes to give a little assistance up some hills, so keep that in mind if you do not ride a whole lot and want a little extra help to keep it at a pleasant pace. I did a trip through Tuscany with Backroads last year and loved it so I was a little worried about going on a tour with a different company, but I tell you what, I'd go with Cycling Croatia over Backroads in a heartbeat for any trip! The value for the money is much more reasonable and the hotels, food, cycling, support on the course, guides and cultural experiences cannot be beat with Cycling Croatia. Thank you to Petra, Kruno, Mario & Veki for an unforgettable trip!!  Andi Comfort , Minneapolis, MN
What a fabulous trip! This company is absolutely first rate. Krunoslav and Petra, who not only own the company, but accompany you on the tour, are engaging, knowledgeable, and amazingly organized. The hotels, the food, and the routes which were chosen were all excellent. We both ride electric bikes at our home in San Diego, and they provided us with superb electric bikes. Better than the ones we own. The electric bikes allowed us to arrive at our destination after doing quite a few hills, with big smiles on our faces. I strongly recommend that you spend two extra days before the trip in Split, and two extra days at the end of the trip in the Dubrovnik. Both are Fascinating beautiful cities. Thank you Krunoslav and Petra for a remarkable week in lovely Croatia......probably the best organized bike trip we've ever done!! Cheers Paul and Nelly Paul Barry and Nelly Dean, San Diego, California
First of all, Croatia is an extraordinary place to visit and to bicycle. The scenery is amazing, the history deep and fascinating, and the food fresh, delicious, and healthy. The views from the ridges of the Dalmatian islands were exceptional. Kruno and Petra provided a wonderful mix of thoughtful bike routes, extra features, and fine dining. They were supportive of all levels of biking, including ambitious road-bikers and slower tourers. They provided van support whenever needed, and they and their team quickly attended to any needed bike adjustments. All bike equipment was in excellent condition. Once Petra knew that one of us was keenly interested in horticulture she was quick to provide as much information as possible. All meals were included, as were frequent wine tastings, a visit to an olive-oil museum, and an oyster tasting at a cultivated-oyster farm. Two of the meals were very special, in that they had connections to organic farming and gardening and were prepared by dedicated artisans in their homes. The hotels were all excellent and ranged from accommodations within the Diocletian Palace in Split to beach resorts to a luxurious facility overhanging Dubrovnik.Because of the personal attention, the inclusion of all the meals, and the choices of hotels and restaurants, this was not only a spectacular tour but also an extraordinary value. I would recommend Cycling Croatia with Kruno and Petra to anyone. Mark Schlawin, U.S.A.
We just returned home after the 10 day/9 night Dalmatia and National Parks tour, with an extra (independent) day in Zagreb and Dubrovnik that Kruno helped arrange. I won't bore you with all the details of our trip - just assure you that you can't go wrong signing up for this one. Croatia is stunning anyways - I quickly adopted #allbeautifulallthetime when posting photos. The tour itself was top notch also. We've never been on a premium Butterfield & Robinson tour, but extended family in our group had. They felt 80-90% of the Cycling Croatia tour was superior to the level of accommodations/meals/support on the B&R tour - at a fraction of the price. (And none of this CC tour was substandard.) Bottom line: great country, great value, great itinerary, great guides, great food, great wine. Highly recommended. Scott Ryser, U.S.A.
Dalmatia and National Parks Tour We took this tour with Kruno and his team in early October 2016. If you have time, we'd highly recommend the National parks addition to the Dalmatia Tour - they really have to be seen to be believed and the descent overlooking Pag Island was one of the highlights of our trip. As with all the other reviews, we were blown away by the scenery: rugged mountains; crystal clear waters that you could see through forever; Plitvice Lakes (extraordinary - no photo can really do it justice); the islands, with their variations; and of course the cities with the Dioletician Palace in Split and the walled city of Dubrovnik. From the pick up at the airport to final arrival in Dubrovnik, everything was taken care of. It was great to know we were in such safe hands. Kruno and his team (Mario and the others) were all terrific: nothing was too much trouble. The food was fabulous with lots of traditional fare at lunch and great evening meals in unusual locations, rather than the standard restaurant fare you might expect. As they say in Australia "do yourself a favor!" And book this trip! Gillian Harrex, Australia
We toured with Cycling Croatia in July 14, our family of 4 (inc sons aged 19 & 16) was a mixture of different abilities and fitness levels; it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. Kruno and Marko are exceptional hosts; they took real care, providing all the support we needed (and some needed more than others!) but also gave us space when needed. They were knowledgable, informative, helpful, patient, friendly (and occasionally hilarious) The holiday itself was very well organised, the cycling was challenging enough for one very keen cyclist in our group, and enjoyable for everyone thanks to the great support for those who didn't want so much of a challenge. Croatia was wonderful - what a beautiful country - and we felt that Cycling Croatia had really made an effort to show us the true spirit of the country with some fantastic visits to local enterprises, where we sampled many Croatian delights! Also, the route followed some roads we would never have found ourselves, amazing scenery to rival the Amalfi Coast (but much, much quieter), and beautiful bays with wonderful swimming that it seemed only Croatians knew about. The accommodation was of mixed quality - there were a couple of amusingly 'quirky' hotels (and I should mention that one of these isn't on the standard list for this tour - our tour was tailored to our own needs with a couple of extra nights) - but all were in great locations, and didn't diminish the overall quality of the tour/holiday. A couple of the hotels were exceptionally good. In summary: we ate, drank (quite a lot - Zivjeli!), cycled, sweated, and laughed all the way around beautiful Southern Dalmatia in great company. It was an outstanding holiday. We look forward to cycling with them again in future. Alison Lawson, Edinburgh, Scotland
We cycled with Kruno and his team from June 13-19, it was our first cycling holidays. I usually go to all inclusive resorts and go for daily excursions, but with Cycling Croatia, the vacation is the excursion. Yes you'll likely be tired at first, but it's a good tired and you'll be rewarded with excellent food and company each day. By the end of the week, I felt like a million bucks. Also, I can't say enough about the professionalism of Krunos and his team. The are extremely friendly, always prepared and will bend over backwards for their guest. The bikes were brand new shinny trek 7.4 hybrids or trek road bikes (not sure what model) but also new. My wife and I both started with a road bikes, but quickly discovered using hybrids was the way to go. Not used to road bikes, Kruno traded my bike for the hybrid he was using half-way during the first ride. After coming into a curb too hard, the boys repaired my flat tire like a nascar pit crew. Looking at the daily distances, we initially believed that we would tour for only half-days and quickly realized that the daily rides are actually meant to fill out the day (but with breaks to visit wineries, an olive oil factory, oyster and mussels tasting, etc). Dinners were always filled with good conversation (group dinners every night except for one evening), the food was good to excellent and wine (or the drink of your choice) was included most nights. Marco with his interesting history lessons will take you back in time and teach you (in an amusing way) about Croatian history. I guess my only complaint was disbanding our group on the last day. Five stars for this class act company!!!!  Julie and Pascal, Otawa, Canada
My wife and I have recently returned from the Dalmatia Cycling trip, and quite simply, it was the best holiday we have had in years. The coastal scenery is stunning, the food and drink are excellent, and the trip itself is very well planned and organised by Kruno and Petra. They really were the perfect hosts, with Petra taking care of you on the bike, and Kruno following closely in his van should you need any help. The help extended to more water, ice, fruit, snacks, and if you wanted a rest, putting your bike on the roof rack and helping you into the van. Spot on. No stress, no pressure to keep up with the group, just do your own thing knowing that help is never far away. So, the same as other trips then? Not really. The difference on this trip was the emphasis that both Kruno and Petra paid to make sure everything ran smoothly and that you had a really enjoyable time. Nothing is too much trouble, and you see and do things that most tourists to Croatia will never experience. The oyster farm for instance, plus the meal with the local family on Korcula was epic. I have never seen so much meat placed in front of a small group of people. We did our best, but we were never going to finish it off. For me personally though, it was the small things that made this an 11/10 trip as opposed to simply 10/10. For instance, there are 3 winery visits on the itinerary, but whilst my wife loves the grape, I prefer a cold lager. At dinner on the first evening, Kruno took note of this, and when we were sitting in front of a table of food at the first winery, and everyone was starting to sample their first wine, lo and behold, Kruno had popped to the van and returned with 2 ice cold bottles of beer for me. To say that was appreciated was an understatement, and at that moment in time, I would have given the trip a 12/10. Needless to say, that pattern continued at subsequent winery stops, plus the visit to the oyster farm. A small detail I know, but it's things like that that really do make the difference. So, would we recommend the trip? Absolutely. Would we return to Croatia for another cycling trip? No doubt about it, and have already pencilled in a week next year, of course with Cycling Croatia, only this time on their trip further north.  To conclude, a top trip, with top hosts, and I cannot recommend both Croatia and Cycling Croatia enough.  Graham & Beryl Carney , South Yorkshire, UK
We were 4 South Africans that joined the Dalmatia tour in August. In total we were 10 riders in the tour. Previously we were on self-organized cycling tours and never joined a formal tour. This tour exceeded our biggest expectations. A 100% overall point for satisfaction is a huge understatement! Kruno and Petra, the company owners, were our tour guides. They were extremely professional, friendly, very helpful, caring and informative. They were the best hosts any tour can dream of. They went the extra mile to help and accommodate all the individual needs. The meet and greet evening was great with the group. We had a great dinner together and our beautiful cycle shirts were handed to everyone. Kruno briefed us in detail about the first day and had everyone at ease and very excited. We had very good bicycles , helmets, water bottles and bags for small stuff on the bicycle – all tagged with your name. Small bags with personal belongings were transported in the backup van. Kruno drove the backup van and Petra joined us on the bicycles. Every morning we were briefed about the route and the plans for the day. We also received a detailed map and kilometre markings for each day. During the day we were entertained with lots of fruit, water, energy bars, ice etc. The backup van was always in the nearby distance. Accommodation (hotels) was excellent with great breakfast served and all were centrally located. The logistics (luggage, bikes, dinners etc.) was outstanding and Kruno was key in this success.  Kruno and Petra introduced us to Croatian food, wine and culture. We visited several wine cellars for wine tasting and delicious snacks. The several flavours of grappa were fantastic!! We also visited an ancient olive farm – again wine and snacks were served. The ferry to a private island to enjoy the fresh oysters and mussels was one of the many highlights!! We cycled about 50 km a day. The routes are well selected by Kruno and Petra. Croatia is really the most beautiful country we visited - especially the Adriatic Sea and little villages and harbours. The cameradie between the group members were fantastic. The rest of our group was 5 ladies from Denver and a travel writer. We had good laughs and motivated each other.  We recommend this tour as a “must do”. It is absolute worth every pound. Everything is perfectly organized, the Dalmations are BEAUTIFUL and the guides SUPERB – just register for the tour, sit back on your bike, relax and enjoy every moment!!! Island Hopping Bike and Boat Croatia from Split to Dubrovnik

vbt bike tours croatia

Bike (or e-Bike) the stunning Dalamatian Coast of Croatia from Split to Dubrovnik (or in reverse).  Cycle some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands, like Mljet, Lastovo, Korčula, Hvar and Brač.

Only unpack once as you’ll sleep on ‘ Papa Prvi’ , a private motor yacht (maximum 31 people) as you boat from island to island between the two UNESCO World Heritage cities.

This 8 day, guided, virtually all inclusive biking holiday is the perfect way to explore these sparsely populated islands surrounded by the crystal clear blue Adriatic sea.  You will visit charming small villages, bike through vineyards and olive groves, get wowed by outstanding panoramic views of the island and sea, and weave through quiet paths as you intimately get to know this beautiful country.

vbt bike tours croatia

I did my Croatia bike and boat tour with my affiliate, Boat Bike Tours .  They plan all the logistics for your European cycling bike and boat tours.  You can even rent your bike or e-Bike with them.  Scroll down for a list of European biking holidays with this fine company.

Meet the ‘Papa Prvi’

You will travel in style on this beautiful, two mast motor yacht, the Papa Prvi .

There are three levels of cabins (more spacious than I expected!) with a private bath.  On the middle level, is the dining room with huge windows so you don’t miss a view, plus an open air relaxation area out of the sun, and a platform to jump in and take a swim in one of the Captain’s favorite swimming holes.  The upper sun deck allows for catching some rays, watching the sun rise and set, or even taking a big dive into the Adriatic Sea!

Why Visit Croatia?

The beautiful historic walled cities of Dubrovnik and Split get all the attention, but Croatia also boasts over 1000 islands off its coast – mostly uninhabited.  On this trip, you get to visit some of the most beautiful:  the yacht drops you off each morning for an exciting bike ride to allow you to explore these pristine jewels, and then meets you on the other side.

You’ll see the jaw dropping landscape that Croatia is famous for, visit small villages difficult to access for most tourists, enjoy the tasty local cuisine and come home refreshed from a healthy, exciting and memorable vacation.

At the beginning and end of your Croatia bike tour, you will have an included private guided tour of Split and Dubrovnik, and will learn some of the fascinating history and see centuries old, beautiful buildings, fortresses and sculptures.  The winding, maze-like cobblestone streets enclosed in the walled cities on the coast are sure to delight you!

When to Bike and Boat Croatia?

High season to take an island hopping bike tour of Croatia is July and August.  You can avoid the summer crowds (and heat!) by biking Croatia during the low season in June, shoulder season in September, or the off season of April and May, and October.

I went on the last bike and boat tour in October and the weather was perfect!  The water is still warm enough for swimming after a fun ride (albeit the first five minutes were, shall we say, ‘chilly’:).   In fact, the Captain knows all the best swimming holes!  Step off the rear deck to take the plunge, or if fearless, dive or do a flip from the third floor upper deck.

To help you plan your Croatia adventure, here’s the average monthly weather for Split and Dubrovnik .

8 Day Croatia Island Hopping Itinerary

Difficulty of a Croatia Bike and Boat Island Hopping Tour

You should train for this adventure.  While manual bikes were used by a third of my group, most of us opted to upgrade to an e-Bike.  There were some challenging hills that I definitely used the e-Bike’s power support.  There is also one long 40 mile day that includes a long, steep incline.  Everyone did fine!  And with a guide in the front and the back, you can cycle at your own pace.  I never felt ANY pressure to ‘perform’!

You can also bring your own bike.  Just tell them what you want to use when you book.  For sanitary reasons, bring your own bike helmet.  I also wore bike shorts and packed a new gel bike seat cover, just to be on the safe side:  my bottom tends to get sore earlier than my legs.

I’d rate this adventure a 3 out of five if you use an e-Bike, and a 4 or 5 out of 5 if you use a regular bike on some of the more challenging days.

Important Croatia Travel Information

Who is this trip good for.

I went with a girlfriend, but there were several couples and solo bikers on my Croatia bike and boat tour.  We were like a family by the end of the trip, which is typical for adventure travel!

Is the Croatia Bike and Boat tour affordable?

Yes!  This is quite an affordable European adventure holiday.  The tour includes almost all of your meals, you sleep in your cabin on the ship (either with a roommate or you can pay a solo supplement for a private berth).  You will pay for any alcoholic drinks on board, a flat water fee to the Captain which includes filtered and bottled water, any cafe stops, incidentals and guide and ship crew tips.  There are only a couple of independent meals you pay for.

Visa and Safety Information

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Croatia.  Just a current passport with at least three months remaining and one blank page.

Also, Croatia is not in the Schengen Area , so you don’t have to worry about the 90 day limit.  I found Croatia to be very safe .  Here is the current US State Dept travel information.

Is there a language problem if you only speak English?

No!   English is widely spoken.  Most menus in Dubrovnik and Split are offered in multiple languages and/or with pictures.  You will have your guides to help translate for you in the small villages for when you stop in a cafe for a treat.  Young people learn English at an early age, so you can always reach out to them if you need help.  Google Translate into Croatian

Croatian Currency and Tipping Guidelines

Croatia uses the Croatian Kuna .   In the cities, most places accept a credit card – be sure to bring one that does not charge a foreign transaction fee!  The best place to get local currency is via a bank ATM and your debit card.  If you have leftover kunas  at the end of your trip, there are money changers everywhere and you can trade it back at one of them.

Tipping :  At restaurants, servers expect a tip.  You need to pay the tip in cash , even if you pay with a credit card as there is no line for a tip and you want your server and not the manager to get the tip in any case.  ATM’s give you large bills.  Supermarkets and gelato shops are great places to break large bills.  Here are complete tipping guidelines .

Can you drink the water in Croatia?

YES!  Croatia has great water and you can drink it with no problem throughout the country.

Want to see more photos from my trip?

I went on the Bike Boat Tours in a group put together by Traveling Jackie with her JUMP Adventures tours.  Host, Jackie, hired Sam to be the photographer.  Here’s a full page of HIS photos [coming soon – I’m having technical difficulties] .  All the ones above are mine.

You'll get a lot of bang-for-your-buck with this tour group. The accommodations (3-4 star) are very good, and the support (guides and extra activities) is great. In addition, they have a wide variety of trips to choose from. Their special airfare deals and add-ons for pre- and post-trip accommodations are good values, and a way to save money on your entire trip. Companions – Here is where you’ll find the high-end bargain shoppers. Lots of folks in education (school teachers and professors), as well as your typical mix of lawyers and business types.

Clients come from all age groups. A VBT tour may include both 20-something college students as well as some 70-something retirees. Going single is encouraged, and you don’t have to pay a supplement if willing to share a room. Evening socializing can be pretty good, as you’ll have such an eclectic group of folks.

My tour was good, my guides where great. I did the portugal trip in October 2022 But vbt customer service is the worst!!! First u can’t get through To them on the phones… I’ve tried multiple times, Second , email is just as bad, they do not answer any questions, you literally have to hound them, third… they mislead me about booking my flights. From the beginning I told my agent that I would like to fly Delta seeing that I get upgraded because I’m a platinum medallion flyer, but that involved a connection from Chicago to Lisbon. The agent never informed me that they booked their flights the class a service that you cannot get upgraded in because it is a bulk rate. She should have let me know that and I would’ve happily booked my own flights or gone with the TAP flight she which was direct. If you knew my intentions for flying Delta from the very beginning, but did not mention any of this to me. On top of that on the way home I had a middle seat because the BT forgot to book my seats on the way home. I feel like they should’ve either changed my flight to the TAP flight the direct one, or they should’ve paid for our upgrades since they miss guided us from the beginning. I feel like I was so mislead by these people at vbt. They did nothing to even compensate me. And I will restate, they knew my intentions from the beginning. I would not recommend vbt for customer service. My tour gourdes where great, the tour was good ( a few things I didn’t like,(long lunches for instance ), but some ppl do) but overall was good tour hotels good, food for the most part good, But vbt in general very bad customer service, rude, unhelpful, and they just want to collect your money and be done!!!!!

We decided to extend our stay in Europe next summer and have booked a tour in Ireland for next June. They have been less than helpful because we did not use their air services. Hope their tour leaders are better than the customer service portion of the company.

Do not go on the Tour of New Zealand with VBT. The west coast bike tour is on a highway with very DANGEROUS traffic. One of our participants was hit by a car and thankfully he was ok. The previous group had someone hit by another car and broke his collarbone.

We have just booked a trip to Bangkok and Vietnam Nam for March, 2018 and we’re informed that there will be an additional charge of $200 per person for the flight more that what we had agreed upon. Has anyone else had that experience? Bait and switch? Interestingly, that $200 was the same $200 extended to us as a “limited time offer’ discount.

The Dordogne plus Vineyards of Bordeaux is a 10-day trip starting in Brive-la-Gaillard and ending in St. Emilion following the Dordogne and Vezere river valleys and hills combining beautiful scenery, great wine and moderately challenging cycling along small country roads and cycleways. Daily mileage is between 25 to 45 miles over rolling to hilly terrain encountering short, sleep climbs (a few ramps of 12 to 16%). Route finding is facilitated by chalk arrows, so getting lost is seldom a problem. The itinerary leaves plenty of time to enjoy the villages on route with a few multi-night stays in interesting towns like Rocamador and Sarlat. Experience Plus! provides titanium-framed bikes (choice of hybrid or road with plenty of gears), local knowledgeable guides and van support. Hotels are three to four star rated and most meals (breakfast and dinner) are provided in very good restaurants, primarily with a pre-fixe menu at dinner. Wine is included with dinner. Several worthwhile sightseeing tours are also provided.

My wife and I are near the end of our Croatia. Bicycle tour with VBT. It’s been GREAT. Our guides, Natasia & Mario are wonderful. Our fellow travelers are fun to be with. VBT is reasonably priced. And Croatia is amazing! We will do at least one VBT tour a year for as long as we can ride. VBT is the best!

We are considering doing this very trip. My question to is…. do they allow time for you to stop and explore the towns you pass by? Do you have to stay in a group the entire time? What happens if you want to quit riding for the day or you just don’t want to ride at all?

Your feedback is very welcomed

Incredible tour of Ireland.. guide Josie and Bryan were spectacular! so knowledgeable and supportive… love vbt- they give more personal touches that make the trip top of the line. Surprising the food was incredible! Yes it rains in Ireland so bring serious rain gear- but it did not damper any of the 20 riders spirits on this trip. My opinion is this is the only way to see ireland and really feel the country! We had evening entertainment of music, ballads, and dancers.. 5 stars for sure!

This is my ninth trip with VBT and I am beginning to feel alarmed by the decline of quality. To begin on a positive note, our leaders and the rides were superb. There is no prettier view anywhere than the ones we had in Bordeaux/Dordogne and for that alone the trip is heartily recommended. After all, you’re there to ride. But you’re also there to eat and relax and there the ratings are more mixed. The hotel in St. Emilion was awful. The rooms were far too small. Here you run into VBT’s current problem, maintaining great accommodations and food at relatively low prices in the face of escalating costs and an unstable Euro. One solution would be to stay outside St. Emilion and just come in for an afternoon’s tour of the marvelous underground church and the quaint and lovely streets. Secondly, the food offerings this trip were far more restrictive than in the past, with no beef for dinner at all and generally just three dinner menu choices, meat, fish or vegetarian.

This was my letter to the President of VBT 10/15/10 Dear Mr. Marston, I just came off your last Tuscany by the Sea trip and I would be remiss if I did not write to tell you how this trip totally exceeded my expectations. First of all I must commend the clock work precision of your staff as both my partner and I were treated first class all the way, never having to wait for a connection or anything organizational on your part. We were greeted by a nice lady at the Rome airport who whisked us to a private car that drove us to the door step of our hotel in Orvieto. Perfect. The reverse was true on the way out….excellent. Our trip was composed of mostly professional people from across our country and everyone had a great time. We were among the few ‘bicycle tour’ first timers but were told by others, right off the bat, that VBT tours were outstanding and indeed we can now concur. Elana Spalenza & Elana Fossati could not have been more helpful, good natured, professional, warm and engaging.

We’ve done 5 VBT trips and have yet to be disappointed with any aspect of their tours. Inclusive airfare is a great value and accomodations have been first rate. We rate their guides as better or far superior to other bike tour company’s. Travel companions have generally been in their 50s/60s with the ocassional family that brings college-age children along. They offer incredibly great European trip choices.

This was truly the vacation of a lifetime! Our tour guides were great fun and provided wonderful service too. The lunch visit to the olive oil producer was full of local color and flavor, with the owner giving a presentation about harvesting olives from his 500 year old trees, and making great olive oil. The tour was full of local color and not at all commercialized. Our local guides really made the experience fun. Having the airfare included was a help, and we really enjoyed the pre and post trip optional extensions in Florence and Rome. We can’t wait to go back!

I toured Sicily with VBT and had a wonderful time. I would, however, have enjoyed more time and distance cycling. Most days rides were about a half a day or less. The guides were incredible and even topped of our water bottles with a slice of lemon each morning. It was a great trip with a well thought out itinerary and amazing hotels. The group was mostly retirees, except for myself and one other couple.

We went to Ireland with VBT last year and found the trip to be very enjoyable and worth every penny. The acomodations were very good and a good value for what we paid. The guides were knowledgeable and even tho it was the end of the season gave us extra service and caring. The routes were very good and although some of our group had problems with their air routes we did not and found the air connections to be very good. Excellent value – great trip.

After ten Backroads trips, I tried VBT. I had the time of my life with VBT! Accomodations were wonderful. Food was great! The guides were the best! I did the Prince Edward Island tour, in August. I really appreciated the air fare package and coordinating hotels being an option. It made life so easy. It is a little bit older group, which I like, and I found everyone to be so pleasant to be around!

Be very careful when booking airfare with VBT. Lost luggage on both ends of trip resulted from too many stops in flight to Italy. (30 hrs from Baltimore.) we received info re: flights too late to change itinerary. Flight schedule was terrible!

I agree. Puglia was my 5th trip with VBT and they routed me through Atlanta (from Philadelphia) to Rome and through Detroit on my way home. I will NEVER have VBT book my air again.

Great tour, great price, with great leaders, and wonderful support. We loved the fact that there were other things to do besides bike. We had an optional hike on one day, right along our bike ride, and kayaking on an other day, as well as an included boat tour.

I thought I would save money and buy the plane ticket through VBT. What a mistake! We had two layovers, and one was for 5 hours! I suggest finding out the entire itinerary of your flight before booking it with them.

They provided lots of activities on top of just the bike riding, which was fun and helps the group bond together. Even though they said it was intermediate, most days we did surprisingly short rides of only about 25 miles, so we didn’t cover as much as I’d hoped. Next time I’ll choose one of their more challenging trips.

The trip itinerary was good, but guides seemed tired of their job, some days I never saw them that would have been okay if I could trust the written maps, they were wrong several times.

We had a wide range of riders, from novice to very experienced. All got to bike at the level they enjoyed. Food, accomodations and bike rides were seamlessly arranged and pleasing to all.

We LOVED our tour leaders. They were very knowledgeable and accommodating. But it was surprising how many of our fellow riders used the van

VBT is a great value compared to many of the other groups. I bought the add-on which included my flight and 3 extra days, and the price couldn’t be beat.

Just completed a trip to Croatia with VBT. Guides were exceptional, and trip was very good overall. Two negatives. If you live in Atlanta, the airfare will be good, but the routing might be terrible, as ours was. They use United/Lufthansa. Three flights to Croatia….almost 20 hours from start to finish. Excruciating, but priced right which is why you book VBT. Also, the last hotel on the post trip was a dump and a long walk from Split’s Old Town and tourist area.

I had the recent opportunity to travel with VBT in Holland. I could go on and on about all of the positives but will limit it to giving kudos to our leader Marieka, who was fantastic. Also, compliments to the chef, Bas, who did a tremendous job of providing delicious and interesting foods throughout the week on the Iris barge.

Traveled with VBT in France and California. Amazing VALUE! Same lodging as Backroads and Trek, good bikes, FANTASTIC guides and excellent food. Guides are well trained bike mechanics and great teachers of all things local. They gave the right level of support (or extra miles) to every person on the trip–from “minimal” riders to serious hill-toppers.

We just finished the vbt Andalusian bike tour. The guides Nico and JC were over the top amazing. They made the trip immensely enjoyable. However the VBT selection of hotels could definitely use dramatic improvement. We finished at a five star hotel but several of the other hotels would be hard pressed to get two stars in my rating opinion. They were noisy and had flat old pillows with hard beds.

Bike barge tour Croatia — relaxed Adriatic adventures

Cycling may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about a holiday in Croatia — you’re probably imagining picturesque beaches lapped by the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, handsome fortified towns and secluded islands accessed only by yacht…

Bike barge tours in Croatia give you the chance to explore all of this and another side of Croatia’s coastal paradises; challenging hill routes that reward you with spectacular sea views, sleepy island interiors away from the tourist hotspots, and spectacular national parks.

And taking a refreshing dip in the sea feels absolutely delicious after a day’s bike touring!

What to expect on your bike barge tour in Croatia

Croatia’s beautiful, rocky coastlines and verdant island interiors are perfect for those cyclists looking for a challenge: Each day starts with a tasty breakfast on board your motor yacht “hotel” before you and your guide depart head out bike touring through the gorgeous scenery of Southern Dalmatia, the Kvarner Bay Islands or Croatia’s renowned island national parks.

And if it sounds too demanding, don’t forget that you can make things easier with an e-bike.

Every evening you’ll make your way back to the yacht for a well-deserved swim in turquoise waters, a home-cooked meal featuring the freshest local ingredients and Croatian specialties, and a fine wine on deck as you watch the sun go down on another day of bike barge touring in Croatia.

Cycle and sail through UNESCO highlights and natural wonder

For those who would like their Bike barge tour Croatia to combine both island hopping and UNESCO-listed world heritage sites, our Dalmatian trips are perfect and come with the options to be taken as high-end PLUS tours . Marvel at sights like the regal walled city of Dubrovnik, get up and personal with Diocletian’s Palace in Split, and cycle charming routes on the sparsely-populated islands of the Adriatic Sea in between.

On the other hand, if you’d rather spend more time exploring Croatia’s reefs, bays and islands, the National Parks of Dalmatia bike barge tour offers a unique chance to do this. Enjoy easier cycling as you visit the National Park Krka waterfalls, the old town of Trogir, and the wild aquatic realm of the Kornati National Park archipelago and its attendant islands.
