It might not be known as one of the world’s nightlife trailblazers, but Vietnam likes to party – and it's home to an ever-growing crop of craft beer tap rooms, rooftop bars, speakeasy cocktail lounges and sociable beach bars. Here are our top Vietnam nightlife spots for after-dark entertainment.

Useful tips about Vietnam nightlife

Go sky-high in ho chi minh city, vietnam nightlife: beer and buddhas in hanoi, beach bars in phu quoc, party hard in nha trang, seaside sundowners in mui ne, vibrant atmosphere in hoi an, dreamy drinking in the central highlands.

The information in this article is inspired by the Rough Guide to Vietnam , your essential guide for visiting Vietnam .

Cultural Saigon

4 days / from 550 USD

Cultural Saigon

Southern Vietnam is home to modern Ho Chi Minh City, a vibrant southern capital full of historic attraction and old Saigonese charm. Soak up some café culture, enjoy authentic street food, and get a taste of the city’s thriving markets.

In Vietnam, drinking alcohol is a social activity to be shared with friends. Locals rarely drink alone, and rarely without eating. Be prepared for lots of toasts to health, wealth and happiness, and no doubt to international understanding, too. It’s custom to fill the glasses of your fellow guests – someone else will fill yours.

While beer and imported spirits are drunk throughout Vietnam, the traditional tipple is ruou can or rice-distilled liquor. Until recently, ruou can be regarded as decidedly downmarket, the preserve of labourers, farmers and ethnic minorities. Nowadays, it’s becoming popular among the middle class as city-centre bars and restaurants begin to offer better-quality ruou can.

Roughly forty years ago technology for making bia hoi (draught beer) was introduced from Czechoslovakia and it is now quaffed in vast quantities, particularly in the north. Bia hoi may taste fairly weak, but it measures in at up to four percent alcohol. It’s also ridiculously cheap, and supposedly unadulterated with chemicals, so in theory you’re less likely to get a hangover. Bia hoi has a 24-hour shelf life and the better places sell out by early evening.

Bia hoi culture is all about enjoying a few beers with a group of friends – it’s still an almost completely male activity, though in the cities you’ll see a few local women (and female travellers won’t be judged for joining in). The Vietnamese rarely drink alone and rarely drink without eating, so many places serve a range of snacks and more extensive dishes.

Things are looking up for nightlife in Vietnam’s honorary capital (still known as Saigon to many locals). Flocks of people take to the skies each night, at one of the city's rooftop bars. Dress to impress at Chill Skybar , the most fashionable place in town with its neon lights and cabaret dancers. Located In The Heart of District 1 - Tnr Saigon bar has a wide range of beers on tap.

Techno-heads should make for The Lighthouse , in District 1, which has a roster of both local DJs and international acts. You might be lucky enough to see a big-name DJ at super cool Blanchy’s Lounge – Pete Tong and Grand Master Flash have both played here before. Ladies' Night means free Mojitos for women on Wednesdays.

Craft beer is also having a moment in Ho Chi Minh . Biacraft has around 50 different brews on tap. Pasteur Street has pumped out over 200 different brews since 2014. And it's worth a trip to the Heart of Darkness for the beer's arty branding alone.

If you're on a budget, join in the fun in a streetside bar along De Tham Street (drinks in the upmarket Dong Khoi Street will cost five times the price). Additionally, you can always economise downtown by taking advantage of early-evening happy hours.

For a capital city, Hanoi goes to bed pretty early. Luckily, the authorities seem to be gradually relaxing their midnight curfew. The nightlife scene here is all about cool cocktail lounges. In fact, we listed it as one of the best cities in Vietnam .

The trend for speakeasies has taken off here: the Alley Cocktail Bar and the Kumquat Tree are both atmospheric. If you've still got life left in you after knocking back those spirits, finish your evening on Ta Hien. This busy street is packed with lively, dimly lit Vietnam bars.

A must-visit for any first-time visitor to Hanoi, Bia Hoi Junction is widely regarded as the quintessential nightlife spot in Hanoi. Bia hoi stalls or shophouses generally open from mid-afternoon to mid-evening, and serve fresh draught beer poured straight from the barrel – just look for the tell-tale metal barrels, and patrons sitting on stools and clutching greenish glass tumblers.

A lively stretch of coast on Vietnam's mainland, Nha Trang has a buzzing nightlife scene. It's a backpacker favourite.

Sailing Club on Tran Phu S treet has been a favourite spot for an eclectic group of party animals for some years. DJs and swing chairs on the beach draw a well-heeled expat crowd and hordes of tourists to its refined beachfront bar, which gets progressively less refined as the night wears on. Try one of the signature cocktails, infused with goodies such as rose petals, ginger and chilli.

A couple of restaurants in Nha Trang are also great for evening drinks. La Mancha offers shisha to go with your cocktails or try the sampler beer set at Louisiane Brewhouse on Tran Phy Beach – which combines pilsner, dark lager and seasonal ales.

Food and drinks are inseparable, so we think this tailor-made culinary-related tour might be interesting for you.

It’s all about the beach bar nightlife along this popular stretch of seafront in southeast Vietnam.

Dragon Beach has an outdoor pool and a huge dancefloor where you can work up a sweat to local DJs playing electro and deep house.

For more of a chilled atmosphere, join the local surfing and kitesurfing community at Jibe . The bar has a watersports centre attached. What better way to unwind after a day on the waves than by flopping on the comfy sofa seating with a decent, cheap drink in hand?

Backpacker Village Ca Na hostel is a great watering hole, whether you’re staying here or not. They don’t so much have a happy hour as an entire happy evening. And if you can find some time between sipping cocktails, get a game going of pool or try your hand at ping pong.

A small town it may be, but Hoi An has a modest nightlife scene. Particularly lively are the late-night bars across the Thu Bon River on An Hoi Islet, where the party starts after sundown – after a walk along the prom you’ll most likely pick out a favourite.

E-Village is the most urbane place to drink on the north bank of An Hoi Islet, with lovely decorations, quiet music, and cocktails such as the MGM (like a mango, gin and mint shake). Decent food too.

Three Dragons sports bar is the place to head if you want to catch a live football game, an F1 Grand Prix or other sporting events. There’s a well-stocked bar and meals available too.

Market Bar is indeed set into elevated flanks of the grimy market, though it’s surprisingly elegant. You’ll have to choose between the restaurant and wine sections, though you’ll get the same stuff at either; Latin American snacks like empanadas and queso fundado augment a drinks list including some quirky G&T options, including blue pea flower. Pleasingly off the tourist radar, at least for the time being.

Start in Da Lat. For a different type of rooftop drinking experience to the swanky 'Sky bars', 100 Roof Bar has seven floors including a wonderland-like rooftop garden. The street food and night markets offer a different side of Vietnam’s nightlife. They capture the essence of Vietnamese culture, with places like Hanoi’s Beer Street allowing visitors to indulge in local cuisines while mingling with both locals and travelers alike.

Cultural Experiences at Night

Vietnam’s nightlife is not just about vibrant markets and bustling streets; it’s also ripe with cultural experiences that capture the essence of Vietnamese traditions. Visitors can explore the rich history and creative expressions through various activities that shine after sunset.

Water Puppet Shows

Water puppetry is a unique art form originating in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam dating back to the 11th century. These enchanting performances take place on a water stage, with puppeteers standing behind a screen, manipulating the lacquered wood puppets using long bamboo rods. Shows often depict scenes from rural life, Vietnamese folklore, and national history. One can experience these magical performances at venues such as the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi.

Nighttime City Tours

Various Vietnamese cities offer nighttime tours that allow visitors to see the urban landscape in a different light. These tours might include guided walks or rides through historic districts, with opportunities to learn about the architecture and local customs. For example, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, a visitor might explore markets, sample street food, or visit landmarks beautifully illuminated at night. Companies like Easy Vietnam Tours often guide these tours, providing deeper insight into the urban fabric of Vietnam after dark.

Traditional Music and Dance

Vietnam’s nightlife wouldn’t be complete without the rhythms of traditional music and dance . Various venues across the country offer live performances that range from classical styles such as Ca Tru and Hat Xam to ethnic minority music and dances . In places like the Old Quarter of Hanoi or the ancient town of Hoi An, one might stumble upon an open-air performance or a staged show that provides a glimpse into Vietnam’s artistic legacy. These performances prove to be a soul-stirring way to spend the evening.

 • Taxis : Reliable and metered taxis are available, with reputable companies like Mai Linh and Vinasun.
 • Ride-hailing apps : Services such as Grab offer safe and convenient options that provide fare estimates and driver details before you ride.

Planning Your Night Out

A visitor’s experience in Vietnam’s nightlife is only as good as their preparation. Knowing when to venture out and understanding local etiquette can markedly enhance one’s nighttime forays.

Best Times to Explore Nightlife

Hanoi: The capital’s nightlife sparkles brightest on weekends. Most establishments stay open until late, but it’s advised to check in advance as some places might close earlier than anticipated.

Ho Chi Minh City: In this southern metropolis, one finds clubs and bars open past midnight, particularly in districts 1 and 3. To fully engage with the lively ambiance, visitors should target Friday and Saturday nights when the city truly comes to life.

Da Nang: For beachside revelry, the best times are during summer months from May to August . The city’s coastline is illuminated with vibrant parties and bars offer a range of live music and DJ sets.

Local Festivals: To catch special events and parties, planning around local festivals could provide a unique experience. Checking local event calendars is beneficial.

Local Etiquette and Tips

 • Dress Code: Many clubs in Vietnam have a casual dress code, but select rooftop bars and upscale clubs may require a more polished attire. It is advisable to research the venue beforehand.
 • Transport: Taxis and rideshare apps are reliable means of night transport. It’s better for travelers to have their accommodation’s address noted in Vietnamese.
 • Safety: Keep personal belongings secure and minimize carrying large amounts of cash. It’s essential to stay vigilant, especially in crowded places.
 • Language Barrier: Not all staff may speak fluent English, so learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases can go a long way in improving one’s experience.
 • Tipping: It isn’t mandatory but appreciated for exceptional service. Around 5-10% of the bill is customary when tipping.

By adhering to these guidelines, visitors can smoothly navigate Vietnam’s nightlife and create memorable evenings.

These destinations offer a bustling nightlife scene, including bars, nightclubs, and disco bars. The partying ends in the early morning hours and the atmosphere is filled with lively chaos. Hanoi offers many things to do during the day, but the city comes alive at night! It's easy to feel the party vibes when roaming the streets of Hanoi at night. There's a mix of locals and expats looking for fun and entertainment in the many places to go.

Enjoy Local Street Food And Beer At Bia Hoi Junction

After dark, the Bia Hoi Junction is one of Hanoi's most popular local and tourist places. In the Old Quarter , you'll bump into many tourists and expats. Head to Beer Hoi since it is known for its locally brewed beers. If the seat is filled up, don't worry because many other shophouses are nearby, ready to serve your favorite drinks.

The street's shophouses serve affordable beers alongside snacks, such as steamed peanuts and beef jerky. If you want to enjoy a laid-back night in Hanoi, it's an experience you shouldn't miss.

Dance The Night Away At The Toilet Club

Soak in the party vibes when you visit The Toilet Club in Hanoi. The city's most buzzing nightclub boasts three open venues until midnight. The Toilet Club is located on the sixth floor of Hanoi's Capital Building, so it's easy to find.

A group of well-dressed locals and tourists come to this club, where they serve all kinds of drinks. The club plays mostly hip-hop, house, and lounge music! Their drink menu is relatively inexpensive, another reason to visit this club if you want quality entertainment in Hanoi without breaking the bank.

Visit The Iconic Legend Beer

Legend Beer is an iconic third-story bar in Hanoi, which you're probably familiar with since it is one of the most photographed buildings in Downtown Hanoi. Tourists and locals come here to enjoy a few bottles of beer while enjoying the overlooking view of Hoan Kiem Lake and the rest of downtown. It's also an excellent viewpoint to marvel at the buzzing noise of the streets below.

Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh features several districts, each offering different nightlife entertainment. So choose the best nightlife attractions to experience based on your style and preference.

Check Out The Ben Thanh Market

If your idea of a great nightlife in Ho Chi Minh is shopping, you must head to the Ben Thanh Market. Dining and shopping enthusiasts could spend hours roaming the Ben Thanh Market looking for authentic street food from the many stalls available here. Once you've filled up on delicious Vietnamese food, you can explore all the stalls for unique souvenirs and artisan crafts.

Sai Gon street food market

Drink Up At Pham Ngu Lao

Think of Pham Ngu Lao as the version of Bangkok's Khao San Road. The legendary district is the go-to option for tourists and locals looking for a buzzing street drinking scene. It is also known as the backpacker hub in Ho Chi Minh. Many nightclubs and restaurants offer affordable beers, drinks, and food.

Saigon Rooftop Bars

If street drinking is not your cup of tea, don't fret because Ho Chi Minh City has its fair share of rooftop bars you can head to!

The city has an impressive collection of rooftop bars, such as the Chill Skybar. It's the perfect spot to sip on your favorite cocktail while soaking up the view of the city. Come here near sunset so you can marvel at the view of the sun disappearing on the horizon.

The ancient riverside town of Hoi An is a famous destination for tourists seeking cultural activities. But it's emerged as a nightlife destination in recent years due to the city's live music venues, trendy bistros, and artistic lounges. Even the streets of Hoi An light up at night, providing tourists and expats with many things to do after dark.

Enjoy Food And Shopping at the Hoi An Night Market

Night markets are on top of the must-do activities in Asia, and it's no different when you're in Hoi An. Over 50 local vendors set up their stalls for the night market, where you can find budget shopping and authentic food. The night market is set up at Nguyen Hoang Street, the heart of town. It's also filled with colorful lanterns, making it a popular photography spot.

Maybe go on a street food tour ?

Bar Hopping in Hoi An

On the exterior, Hoi An looks like a sleepy ancient town. But don't let that fool you because Hoi An comes alive at night with many excellent bars and bistros for a more relaxed nightlife experience.

Tam Tam Café is an iconic nightlife destination in Hoi An. Opened in 1996. It features an inspired décor, a drink menu consisting of many imported selections, and a food menu that brings a blend of Vietnamese and European fares. There's also an upstairs lounge area where you can do some people-watching while enjoying your food and drinks.

The White Marble Wine Bar is another excellent nightlife destination in Hoi An. It is a fantastic drinking spot in a refurbished heritage building with views of the Thu Bon River and the bustling streets. It is a premium nightlife destination, which suits those who prefer spending the night in a more relaxed setting.

Other excellent bars in Hoi An are Before and Now Bar, Mango Rooms, and Mango Mango.

15 Best Things To Do At Night In Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Are you planning to visit Ho Chi Minh city and wonder where to go, what to do at night here?

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is famous for its bustling nightlife, with no shortage of places to hang out.

In this travel guide, I share my favorite things to do at night in Ho Chi Minh city for an interesting evening.

Join a food tour

Joining a food tour is probably one of the most exciting things to do at night in Ho Chi Minh city.

We love sitting on the back of the bike and venturing through the small alleys to find the best local dishes.

Which food tour should you try? We joined several food tours in Ho Chi Minh city, and you can check our Saigon food tour review here.

street food at night Ho Chi Minh city Vietnam.

Stroll along Nguyen Hue Walking Street

On your trip to Saigon, you should definitely visit Nguyen Hue pedestrian street in the evening to have a vibrant view of the city.

Looking down from above, Nguyen Hue pedestrian street is crowded and bustling with colorful lights.

Many people gather here for a walk at night or stop by one of the shops and cafes along the roads.

You can spot kids running and having fun at the water performance.

Also, there are entertainment activities, groups singing and dancing at the weekends, making Nguyen Hue street at night even more enjoyable.

Try ice skating

How about going ice skating in Saigon at night?

You can try ice skating at Landmark 81 and Vincom Mega Mall Thao Dien.

Landmark 81 has one of the largest indoor ice rinks in Vietnam, with an area of 2000m2 and a maximum capacity of 150 guests.

The ice skating rink is frozen from natural water, 30mm thick, with a dedicated cooling system. All supporting equipment is imported from the US and Europe.

 • The ticket price for the Landmark skating rink is 220,000 VND for adults and 150,000 VND for children.
 • Address: B1 floor, Vincom Center Landmark 81 building, 772 Dien Bien Phu street, Ward 22, Binh Thanh District, HCMC.

Listen to live music.

Whether it’s a night out with friends or a spontaneous outing, live music bars have something for everyone to enjoy.

The music ambiance, the crowd, the drinks all make a lively and joyful atmosphere.

I’ve compiled a list of top live music bars in Ho Chi Minh city .

Acoustic Live Music Bar Saigon Vietnam

Watch the city from Saigon Tunnel Park

Visiting Thu Thiem Park (Saigon tunnel park) in District 2 is a must for those who love photography.

Here, you can view the city center from the banks of the Saigon River.

Boats and ships carrying cargo containers drive back and forth every minute. When the sun goes down, the city is simmering in lights, creating a breathtaking view.

Also, hundreds of sets of plastic tables and chairs are arranged close to the river for visitors in the afternoon. You can order some snacks while relaxing and chatting with friends.

Eat seafood

Ho Chi Minh city is a hub of seafood, and people have mastered the cooking here. There’re plenty of choices, from oysters, shrimp to scallops and crabs.

A seafood dish starts from $2, and you can have a full meal with drinks under $10 per person.

My favorite dishes are steamed clams with lemongrass, grilled oysters, and grilled scallops.

Crab seafood

Go bar hopping

Ho Chi Minh city has a thriving nightlife scene with plenty of bars and clubs for a fun night out.

Each bar has different styles and decorations, so break your night into chapters and make it fun by visiting different bars on your trip.

Maybe you’ll have some odd or exciting experiences along the way.

Chill Sky Bar at night Ho Chi Minh Vietnam.

Visit Ben Thanh market

Visiting Ho Chi Minh city without the Ben Thanh market will be a huge miss.

At night, the streets along Ben Thanh market transform into a vibrant night market, selling various items such as clothes, fabrics, shoes, bags, handicrafts, etc.

Stop by Ben Thanh market and try your bargain skill here. You may find some cute gifts and souvenirs for loved ones!

Ben Thanh Street Food Market

 • Opening hours: 05:00 – 02:00
 • Address: 26-28-30 Thu Khoa Huan, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1

When it comes to experiencing nightlife activities in Saigon, eating and drinking cannot be ignored.

Although it’s late at night, street vendors in Saigon are still very crowded and bustling.

Next to Ben Thanh market is a food court of about 700m2 on Thu Khoa Huan Street, District 1 called Ben Thanh Street Food Market.

This place has about 60 snack stalls with a full range of dishes from Vietnamese cuisine to dishes from all over the world.

You can find many delicious dishes such as pho, bun cha, spring roll, noodle soup, broken rice, and grilled skewers.

Saigon street food market

Visit book street

Nguyen Van Binh Book Street is a road more than 200m long in the center of District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Here you can find more than 20 stalls selling books from different publishers across the country.

While most people visit here in the morning, I find walking around here at night is very relaxing. It’s less crowded, and you can take a slow walk and take a look at the books.

At night, the shimmering lights begin to light up. The lights from the stalls and surrounding cafes add to the prominence of Nguyen Van Binh’s book street.

Saigon Outcast

Address: 188 Nguyen Van Huong, Thao Dien

Saigon Outcast is an ideal nightlife destination with its creative space. Its campus is filled with artistic and creative spirit with three stacked containers surrounded by low walls covered with vivid and colorful graffiti.

This place has a lot of fun, surely will make Saigon night in your heart full of memories.

Have fun at Bui Vien

Bui Vien Walking Street is the heart of Saigon’s entertainment at night.

This street attracts lots of Vietnamese youngsters and travelers from around the world. All gather here for a busy, fun, and exciting nightlife.

This crowded neighborhood includes four famous streets named: Bui Vien Street, De Tham Street, Pham Ngu Lao Street, and Do Van Dau Street.

You can find several bars, clubs, and restaurants in this area.

Bui Vien at night Ho Chi Minh Vietnam.

Relax at Turtle lake

Turtle lake is a great place to see the bustling Saigon streets with shimmering and brilliant street lights at night.

There are many benches for people to sit and chat and relax at the lake after stressful and tiring working hours.

You’ll see many people gathering here, from couples walking and relaxing, groups of young people chatting to children running and playing. All of them bring a lively and joyful atmosphere.

Turtle lake is also a street-food paradise. You can find many snacks such as milk tea, peach tea, mango shake, and grilled rice paper.

Please note that there’s no parking service at the lake, so you should park your bike nearby.

Bowling is a fun way to spend a night out in Ho Chi Minh city. It’s inexpensive and fun to play, even if you only have two people.

There’re many bowling centers in Saigon, for example:

 • Powerbowl Van Hanh Mall: 5th Floor – Van Hanh Mall – 11 Su Van Hanh, Ward 12, District 10.
 • Powerbowl Hung Vuong: 3rd floor – Parkson Hung Vuong – 126 Hung Vuong, Ward 4, District 5.
 • Bowling Dream Game – AEON Mall Tan Phu: 30 Bo Bao Tan Thang street, Son Ky, Tan Phu district.

Eat your way along Co Giang street

I don’t know since when Co Giang street has become a great foodie destination with many restaurants. Walking along the road, you’ll see lots of delicious food vendors.

My favorite shops are:

 • Ms. Tuyen’s Bun Thit Nuong : Grilled pork vermicelli attracts diners with the richness of grilled pork, spring rolls’ crispiness, and sweet fish sauce.
 • Co Giang Bo la lot : Beef wrapped in la lot beef is grilled and served with rice paper, vegetables. Dipping with chili garlic fish sauce makes it even tastier.

The Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Vietnam, According to Experts

Here's when to visit Vietnam for sunny weather, lower prices, and excellent sightseeing.

vietnam tourist night time

Best Times to Visit for Smaller Crowds

Best times to visit for good weather, best times to visit for lower prices, best times to visit for hiking in sa pa, best times to visit for cruising ha long bay, worst times to visit.

Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks.

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary.

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Here's a regional breakdown of the primary tourist seasons in Vietnam:

 • High Seasons: North: September to November, March and April; Central: April to August; South: October to April
 • Shoulder Seasons: North: December to February, May to August; Central: September to March; South: September to December
 • Low Season: North: May to October; Central: September to May; South: May to September

Before you start planning your trip, read on to learn about the best times to visit Vietnam for hiking the majestic, mountainous rice terraces of Sa Pa, cruising the limestone marvels of Ha Long Bay, and avoiding the rainy monsoon season.

Bang The Tran/Getty Images

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south.

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss.

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

Meet the Expert

 • Melissa Matthews is the regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah.
 • Benjamin Kreuz is the general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz.

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities.

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April.

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

Wand_Prapan/Getty Images

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train.

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators).

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

Nick Dolding/Getty Images

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season.

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns.

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts.

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

Tips on Getting Out at Night in Hanoi

Discovering nightlife in Hanoi is fun. However, please note some tips for a safe and convenient trip:

 • Bring your identification along in case you are asked. And do not bring valuable things like jewelry. Vietnam is a safe country but it still has petty theft.
 • Keep yourself warm, bring your jacket if you visit Hanoi in the winter.
 • It is better to go with your friends for safe, particularly at night because there may be robberies, thieves or drug addicts on the street. When you suspect anything, report to the nearest police station.
 • Rent a motorbike. A motorbike is much more convenient and money-saving than taxis. Also, you can go around Hanoi at any time you want. However, please remember to wear a helmet because the road is always full of people and it is a little hard to move around in rush hours.
 • Choose reliable tour agencies. You may think of calling a tour agency for a better trip. But, it will be better to check for their customers’ reviews before you choose. So, you can have a happy trip.

Hanoi is more than a city, it is an experience. Its nightlife is full of interesting options for visitors from many countries, which makes it different from other districts of Hanoi. Let’s discover the city at night time. If you are not sure about anything, please leave some comments. We are always willing to support.

There's a lot to love about travelling in Vietnam , which stretches from the soaring mountains and fascinating ethnic groups of the north to the endless rice paddies and vibrant waterways of the Mekong Delta in the south, with more than 3000km of glorious coastline in between.

Throw in a good transport infrastructure of buses, trains and flights and an abundance of cheap but excellent street food and it's no surprise Vietnam graces countless bucket lists. But, like any country, it has its challenges, and some visitors come home with tales of scams, hectic roads and pushy vendors. Following these top tips will help you avoid the major pitfalls, and ensure you come away from your first visit to Vietnam with happy memories, as well as your souvenir conical hat.

Two women pose with baskets of street food in Hanoi. Both women are wearing conical hats, which are common in the country.

Vietnam 's long exposure to foreigners means that many local residents aren’t as overtly curious about visitors as some of their counterparts in Cambodia , Myanmar and Laos . Also, because most Vietnamese are not confident with spoken English despite learning it in school, people tend to ignore lost-looking foreigners unless you actually ask for help. But be assured that the Vietnamese really are friendly people. If you ask someone a question with a smile and in slow, clear English, you’ll almost certainly have it answered and the smile returned. Simple phrases such as xin chào ('hello', pronounced 'seen chow') and cám ơn ('thank you', pronounced 'kaam uhn') go a long way.

Get connected

While most hotels , cafes and restaurants have wi-fi, you can easily buy a SIM card and get connected to the internet for as little as US$3. Vietnamese street names are notoriously long (most are named after people), so digital maps trump paper ones for many travellers. You’ll also find having a local phone number handy for meeting up with tour guides and making last-minute bookings on the road. SIM cards are widely sold in corner shops and are easy to top up. Once you have a card, the process to register for internet can be tricky, so ask the shopkeeper or your hotel to do it for you. Lonely Planet's Guides app covers Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City .

Know your dong from your dollar

The Vietnamese dong is the currency of Vietnam and comes in denominations ranging from 200 to 500,000 (about US$22 at the time of writing). While it’s thrilling to become a Vietnamese millionaire, dealing with that many zeros can become frustrating, especially since some of the currency is very similar in colour. For example, the 10,000d note and the 200,000d note are both tan while the 20,000d and 500,000d notes are both blue. It’s very easy to hand over the wrong bill to a taxi driver while in a rush. Spend a minute in your room before going out to sort your bills to avoid overpaying. Even if you do end up overpaying a small amount for certain things, take it in stride. In the grand scheme of things, it’ll likely not be worth the aggravation.

While international credit and debit cards are accepted at most larger hotels, restaurants and travel agencies (sometimes with an added fee), cash is still king in Vietnam for day-to-day transactions. ATMs are widely available, and currency can be exchanged at banks (and some gold shops, although this practice is frowned upon by the government).

Note that the official system of separate prices for Vietnamese and foreigners – which applied to everything from train tickets to entrance fees – is a thing of the past.

Be wary of taxi scams

For many, motorcycle taxis are the best way see the thronging streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. However, scams can happen, and your best protection is a decent knowledge of where you are going and points along the way. Always agree on a price beforehand and be prepared to be quoted a higher price than the locals. For regular taxis, stick to the two major companies of Mai Linh and Vinasun (both have apps). Smaller, independent taxis are known for fast meters and aggressive drivers. If you’re in one of the larger cities, ride-sharing apps like Uber and Grab are good, offering both car and motorcycle taxis. Sometimes the driver will call to confirm, so having a Vietnamese-speaking friend nearby will come in handy.

The sweeping rice terraces beneath Fansipan in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. Beyond the green rice terraces a number of mountains are visible.

Know your transport options

Overnight buses are a good way to cover long distances and save on accommodation costs. However, the layback seats don’t offer much legroom, so tallish passengers (anyone over 1.6m) will find it impossible to stretch out fully. While the top bunk offers slightly more privacy, they can be right at the height of street lights. Sleep masks, ear plugs and noise-cancelling headphones (especially if the bus is playing music or movies) are recommended.

That said, sometimes you can pay a few more dollars and fly – the more convenient but less sustainable option . Vietnam has several budget airlines, which offer cheap fares but are notorious for being late and strictly enforcing carry-on limits. The national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has better service and comparable pricing if booked in advance.

More comfortable than buses and cheaper than flights, train travel is another option for getting around Vietnam. A railway line spans the length of the country, following the coastline from HCMC all the way to Hanoi and beyond. It's a must for rail enthusiasts, with the ride considered amongst the most amazing train journeys in the world .

Be aware of your surroundings

Violent crime is extremely rare in Vietnam, and firearms are heavily regulated. But snatch-and-grabs and, to a lesser extent, pickpocketing, do happen. It pays to be vigilant. Use your phone and other electronics sparingly when outside (even while sitting at a sidewalk cafe or on the back of a motorbike). Leave your passport at the hotel; there’s rarely a reason to have the original on you.

Also, while Vietnam has some of the cheapest beer in the world, be careful about overdoing it. Inebriated tourists wandering back to their hotel in the morning hours when there is little traffic around can be seen as easy targets. If you come home late at night, go with a friend and splurge the extra dollar or two on an automobile taxi instead of a motorcycle taxi.

Be safe on the roads

Traffic in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can seem terrifying at first glance. Just walking across the street during rush hour can feel like an impossible task! But there is method to the madness and, like a school of fish, the traffic will inevitably glide around you as long as you keep moving at a slow and steady pace. If unsure, do as the locals do and raise one hand high to be seen above the sea of helmets.

If you’re looking to drive a motorbike yourself, it’s best to save it for one of the quieter destinations like Hoi An , Dalat or Phu Quoc . Always wear a helmet, and be aware of the exhaust pipe, which has caused many a leg burn. As motorbikes tend to drive closely to each other, keep your feet pointed inwards and think of wearing closed shoes which offer extra protection for your feet.

DEVELOPING NIGHT-TIME TOURISM, DELIVERING ON UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES

vietnam tourist night time

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently announced a project to develop night-time tourism, which is gaining popularity in Vietnam. The idea is to develop another revenue stream to contribute to the country’s economic development, popularise the Vietnam brand, improve competitiveness, and provide memorable experiences for visitors.

Accordingly, the project will focus on developing cultural activities, festivals, and nightlife entertainment to contribute to promoting and preserving traditional culture, creating a unique and impressive space for tourists, especially foreigners. This is a direction that many localities, especially key tourist areas, have begun to pilot to promote local strengths.

vietnam tourist night time

In Hanoi, the night tour “Decoding the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long” made its debut in April 2022 and was well received by domestic visitors at weekends. This is also Hanoi’s second night tour, after that offered by the Hoa Lo Prison relic site.

Travellers begin their 1.5-hour tour at Doan Mon (Main Gate), the entrance to Cam Thanh (Forbidden area) – the king’s residence, and learn about the site’s history, architecture, and functions there.

vietnam tourist night time

They will later enjoy an ancient dance right on the glass covering the archaeological excavation area and gain an insight into this dig from tour guides, that will educate on the vestiges of the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties. They will also visit an exhibition hall of rare antiquities with some dating back over 1,000 years.

At Kinh Thien Palace, travellers can offer incense to King Ly Thai To, who moved the country’s capital from Hoa Lu in Ninh Binh province to Dai La which he renamed Thang Long in 1010. Tour guides will also dicuss the contributions of other kings to the capital’s development. The last destination of this trip is the archaeological site at No. 18 Hoang Dieu street, where visitors will experience a laser light show of outstanding antiquities of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel. Tourists can take part in a game in which they have to identify typical objects of feudal dynasties in the past.

The northern province Quang Ninh, home to UNESCO-recognised world natural heritage site Ha Long Bay, is among the localities pioneering in exploiting night-time tourism products. Director of the provincial Department of Tourism Pham Ngoc Thuy said that night tourism in Quang Ninh is currently focused on several services such as restaurant cruises, music galas on the bay, and night streets.

Thanks to these activities, Quang Ninh welcomed a total of 8.86 million visitors in the first half of this year, earning 16.6 trillion VND (675.3 million USD), ranking it third, after Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, in terms of tourism revenue in this period.

vietnam tourist night time

Many other localities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Thua Thien – Hue, Da Nang, Binh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, and Can Tho are all exploring available strengths to develop night tourism products to attract more holidaymakers.

Increasing competitiveness to attract more tourists

Experts suggest night-time tourism not only allows tourists to enjoy the unique local culture and culinary specialties, but also helps disperse the number of tourists during the daytime, thus reducing the load on main tourist destinations during peak hours, and enhancing sustainability.

vietnam tourist night time

This kind of tourism also contributes to creating more jobs for local people, promoting the local economy, and increasing the competitiveness of the country’s tourism sector. However, there are problems related to night tourism that need to be solved towards sustainable development.

Difficulties need to be solved

In late 2022, the Institute for Tourism Development Research (ITDR) conducted a survey on night services for tourists in Vietnam in Da Nang, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat (Lam Dong). These sites already offer night services and are piloting the application of extending service hours until 6am of the next day.

Through the survey they found that in Hoi An, services are still cursory. Tourists mainly come to visit and rarely stay overnight, and the workforce for night activities are hard to find. In addition, Hoi An is an ancient city and a world cultural heritage, so appropriate planning is needed when developing night services.

vietnam tourist night time

As for Da Lat, infrastructure and planning do not yet meet the needs of vehicle circulation or walking tours, while service quality is not yet professional, along with environmental and noise pollution.

vietnam tourist night time

Meanwhile, many night tourism activities in Ho Chi Minh City are still spontaneous and issues related to management and environmental pollution also need to be given appropriate attention.

For Hanoi, the difficulty facing the capital city is lack of human resources, mechanisms to encourage households to expand business activities, and clear planning of space and time for night services.

vietnam tourist night time

Forming night tourism brand of Vietnam

Under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s project, five models of night tourism product development are targeted. These include cultural artistic performances, sports, health care and beauty services, shopping and night entertainment, night tours, and culinary culture.

vietnam tourist night time

Bui Hoang Son, permanent member of the National Assembly’s culture and education committee, said that to successfully carry out night-time tourism and bring about high economic efficiency, it needs appropriate investment in infrastructure like lighting, public utilities and transport to ensure safety and convenience for tourists. Night tours also require solid policies and regulations to encourage the engagement of businesses, and protect the environment.

It can be said that there is huge potential to develop night-time tourism. However, to make that move effective, the engagement of management agencies, enterprises and the community is essential./.

Everything you need to know about the 2024 Met Gala: Date, time, guest list and more

The 2023 Met Gala Celebrating "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty" - Red Carpet

The Party of the Year. The Oscars of the East. Fashion's Biggest Night.

The Met Gala has a lot of names, and even more lore. The annual event reliably draws the biggest stars, showcases the most daring looks and spurs the internet's most iconic memes .

Here is everything you need to know about this year's Met Gala.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala, officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is an annual fundraiser held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The event is traditionally held on the first Monday in May and is considered to be the highest-profile fashion event of the year. This year, the Met Gala will be held May 6.

The Costume Institute is now called the Anna Wintour Costume Center, honoring the editor-in-chief of Vogue who has helmed the event for nearly three decades.

What time does the Met Gala start?

The red carpet arrivals typically begin around 5 p.m. ET and end around 8 p.m. ET. Most red carpet livestreams, including Vogue's , will begin at 6 p.m.

But some of the most well-known guests tend to show up on the later side: Last year, Rihanna made her red carpet appearance at about 10 p.m.

What is this year's Met Gala theme?

Monday's inevitable social media discourse will not only evaluate celebrities' looks in isolation, but their adherence to the ever-elusive "theme."

The theme is simply the title of the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." In addition to the theme, which describes the overall concept of the event, the Met Gala also has a "dress code." This year's dress code is "The Garden of Time."

The dress code is derived from a 1962 short story of the same name, written by J.G. Ballard. Vogue has suggested the dress code might evoke many floral and botanical looks on this year's carpet.

The exhibit will feature around 250 rare items from the Costume Institute’s collection, including designs by Schiaparelli, Dior and more. It will comprise three main “zones” — Land, Sea and Sky — to represent natural resources and sustainable design.

While the theme is, of course, open to interpretation, expect to see plenty of vintage and archival revivals on the red carpet.

Who are the Met Gala chairs?

This year's Met Gala hosts are Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth and, of course, Wintour.

Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, and Shou Chew, CEO of TikTok, serve as honorary chairs.

Zendaya, who is fresh off the media tour for her movie "Challengers," will likely be wearing one of the most highly anticipated looks of the night.

The 27-year-old actor has attended five times, frequently collaborating with celebrity stylist Law Roach. Zendaya's Joan of Arc-inspired look from 2018 and her light-up Cinderella ballgown from 2019 are among the Gala's most iconic fashion moments.

Who is on the guest list?

Technically, the Met Gala guest list is a secret.

We won't know for certain who will be in attendance until the evening before the event. However, a few of the Gala's regulars have given some indication of whether they plan to attend.

The event always brings together A-listers across industries, from Oscar winners to Grand Slam champions. For the rich but not famous, tickets can be purchased for $75,000. Final approval of the guest list and the seating chart must go through Wintour.

Taylor Swift, who will embark on the European leg of her Eras Tour on Thursday in Paris, is reportedly not expected to attend . Rihanna, Gisele Bundchen and Kendall Jenner are likely to grace the Met steps on Monday, according to Page Six .

How do you watch the Met Gala? What channel is the Met Gala on?

Vogue will livestream the red carpet arrivals on its website. Content creator Emma Chamberlain is slated to return as the magazine's special correspondent. Actor Gwendoline Christie, producer and actor La La Anthony and model Ashley Graham are serving as carpet hosts for the publication's official stream.

The event will also be broadcast on “Live From E!” on the E! network.

Social media platforms like X, TikTok and Instagram are typically bastions of memes, hot takes and outfit reviews on Met Monday.

We will be live blogging the festivities here at NBC News.

Travel chaos at airports across UK - as London and Manchester confirm nationwide border issue

Both Stansted and Gatwick airports said the issue was related to e-gates at passport control.

Airport chaos across UK as border system down'

Chaos has been reported at airports across the UK - as several airports have confirmed a nationwide border issue.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: "Border Force is currently experiencing a nationwide issue which is impacting passengers being processed through the border.

"Our teams are supporting Border Force with their contingency plans to help resolve the problem as quickly as possible and are on hand to provide passenger welfare. We apologise for any impact this is having to passenger journeys."

Manchester Airport also confirmed that the UK Border System is down as part of a nationwide outage.

Bristol Airport said on X it had also been affected by the issue as it warned passengers that "e-gates are not available and wait times may be longer than normal".

A spokesperson for AGS Airports which operates Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports has told Sky News they are impacted by the nationwide outage of the UK Border system.

The flights schedule means they are not currently affected by any queues, but Glasgow airport is due to have international arrivals later this evening.

The spokesperson said that if the situation continues they would expect passengers to be affected at Glasgow airport but contingency plans are in place and extra staff will be on hand to assist passengers.

A London Gatwick spokesperson said: "Some passengers may experience delays at immigration due to a nationwide issue with UK Border Force e-gates.

"Our staff are working with UK Border Force - who operate passport control including the e-gates - to provide assistance to passengers where necessary."

It said its teams are working to assist passengers in the airport.

A passenger at Gatwick Airport posted a video of the queues, saying on X that there were "lots of children and no water".

At Gatwick airport, the queue is over an hour long, with people being given no information on how long it may take for them to get through passport control, Sky News understands, while getting people on trains into London has also become an issue.

One passenger at Heathrow Airport said they had already been in the queue for an hour and it was "only getting bigger".

They added there had been "no communication" on how long it may take to resolve the issue.

Sky News correspondent Sadiya Chowdhury, reporting from Heathrow Airport, said one passenger had been in a queue for about three hours.

Last year, at the end of May, there were similar problems with e-gates and it took a day to resolve the issue as human officers had to check people's passports while the automated machines were out of service.

The country's air traffic system also suffered issues in August 2023 when a technical problem disrupted the National Air Traffic Service for several hours.

Stansted Airport said on X: "UK Border Force is experiencing nationwide issues affecting e-gates at a number of airports, including London Stansted."

They said in a statement to Sky News: "Our operational and customer service colleagues are supporting passengers while UK Border Force and the Home Office fix the issue."

Edinburgh Airport said: "Border Force is experiencing a nationwide technical outage affecting UK airports.

"Although not in a peak arrivals period, some passengers may experience longer than normal waits at the Border while UKBF works to fix the issue." It added: "Thank you for your patience."

A Home Office spokesperson said: "We are aware of a technical issue affecting e-gates across the country.

"We are working closely with Border Force and affected airports to resolve the issue as soon as possible and apologise to all passengers for the inconvenience caused."

Queues at Heathrow Airport

The disruption comes after Border Force workers staged a four-day strike at Heathrow in a dispute over working conditions last week.

The union said the workers were protesting against plans to introduce new rosters they claim will see around 250 of them forced out of their jobs at passport control.
