The Porto Wine Caves in Vila Nova da Gaia are a series of historic cellars located on the south side of the Douro River, across from Porto. They are known for their main product — fortified port wine.

Dating back to the 17th century, the production of Port wine involved adding grape spirit to halt fermentation, a method that preserved the wine during transportation and gave it a distinct flavor. The cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia have been central to the aging and storage of this wine, preserving winemaking techniques over the centuries.

Traditionally, the Port wine from the Douro Valley wineries was transported to these cellars via the Douro River using Rabelo boats. These flat-bottomed, traditional vessels were specifically designed for navigating the sometimes treacherous river currents. This historical practice is why many of the wine cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia are strategically located along or near the riverbanks, facilitating easy offloading and storage of the wine

These caves, some of which have been carved into the rock, showcase the art and science of winemaking in the region. Visiting the area, you can tour the cellars, learn about the winemaking process, and of course try samples of various Port wine varieties.

Getting to Vila Nova Da Gaia from Porto

If you want to get to Vila Nova da Gaia, you can take two different routes. The first is the Ponte de Dom Luís I bridge —built in 1886, this bridge links Porto and Gaia. You have the option to cross at either the upper or lower level. To access the main cellars, it is best to cross at the lower level.

Brief History of the Douro Valley Wine Region

The Douro Valley carries a rich historical legacy, its story woven into the steep terraced vineyards that line the riverbanks and the traditions upheld by its people. Its significance extends far beyond its geographical boundaries, with a history deeply rooted in viticulture and an enduring cultural heritage.

The Douro Valley’s viticultural history dates back over 2,000 years, with the Romans being the first to introduce organized grape cultivation in the region. But it was in the 17th century that the region truly gained international recognition, with the emergence of Port wine. This sweet, fortified wine became highly sought-after, particularly in England, transforming the Douro Valley into a vital economic region for Portugal .

The cultivation techniques used in the valley evolved over time to adapt to the challenging terrain. The steep slopes and rocky soil required innovative solutions, leading to the construction of stone-walled terraces known as “socalcos”. These terraces, still in use today, are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Douro winegrowers.

In 2001, the Douro Valley’s historical and cultural significance was recognized internationally when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This status acknowledges the valley’s unique landscape, which has been shaped by human activities, mainly viticulture, for centuries. The designation also attests to the region’s cultural wealth, including architectural monuments, archaeological sites, and intangible heritage such as folklore, festivals, and traditional practices.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site brings responsibilities along with the recognition. The valley is now subject to international standards of conservation to protect its cultural landscape. This means ensuring sustainable development, preserving traditional cultivation practices, and maintaining the balance between nature and human activities.

Winemaking in the Douro Valley

Viticulture is the lifeblood of the Douro Valley, its tradition and significance deeply embedded in the fabric of the region. It’s here, amid the dramatic, terraced landscape, where the art of winemaking not just flourishes, but thrives in its full glory.

At the heart of the region’s winemaking legacy is Port wine. Born from a unique combination of the Douro Valley’s terroir and centuries-old winemaking techniques, Port is a fortified wine, rich, sweet, and often enjoyed as a dessert wine. It gained prominence in the 17th century when England, amidst a political conflict with France, began importing this robust wine from Portugal. The Douro Valley’s vineyards were swiftly demarcated for the production of this now-famed wine, making it the world’s first officially designated wine region.

Port wine comes in several styles, the most common being Ruby and Tawny. Ruby Port is known for its rich, fruity flavors and deep red color, while Tawny Port, aged in wooden barrels, is characterized by its nutty flavors and amber hue. There’s also Vintage Port, considered the finest of all, made from the best grapes of a single exceptional year and aged in the bottle for many years.

Though renowned for Port, the Douro Valley is no one-trick pony. The region also produces outstanding red and white still wines. Reds are typically robust, with dense fruit flavors, while whites are often fresh and aromatic, showcasing the versatility of the region’s indigenous grape varieties.

As you traverse the Douro Valley, you’ll find an array of quintas (wine estates) open for visits and tastings. Some of the prominent ones include Quinta do Noval , known for its top-notch Vintage Ports; Quinta do Crasto , acclaimed for both its high-quality Ports and still wines; and Quinta de La Rosa , a family-run estate offering a diverse range of wines, including the increasingly popular Douro reds.

Gastronomy in the Douro

In the Douro Valley, the gastronomic experience is as integral to the region’s charm as its sweeping landscapes and esteemed wines. The local cuisine, much like its viticulture, is a testament to the region’s bounty and the local people’s culinary craft.

The gastronomy of the Douro Valley is deeply rooted in its land, utilizing the freshest local produce, meat, and fish. It’s a hearty cuisine, with robust flavors and generous portions that pair wonderfully with the region’s wines. Whether it’s the succulent meats, fresh river fish, or garden-grown vegetables, each dish tells a story of the region’s agricultural abundance and culinary traditions.

A gastronomic tour of the Douro Valley wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of its iconic dishes. Try the ‘Posta à Mirandesa’, a thick, juicy steak sourced from local cattle and grilled to perfection, or the ‘Bacalhau à Braga’, a codfish dish served with crispy potato matchsticks. For the adventurous palate, ‘Cabrito assado no forno’ or roast goat is a local delicacy often prepared for celebrations and special occasions. Don’t forget to finish your meal with a local sweet treat, like ‘Toucinho do céu’, a rich almond cake.

When it comes to dining, the Douro Valley offers a diverse range of options, from family-run taverns to luxurious wine estate restaurants. DOC (Cais da Folgosa, Estrada Nacional 222, 5110-214 Folgosa, Portugal: +351 254 858 123 ), located on the banks of the Douro River, offers gourmet cuisine with a contemporary twist, and their wine list is simply superb.

At the rustic Tasca da Quinta (R. do Marquês de Pombal 42 R/C, 5050-282 Peso da Régua, Portugal: +351 962 800 873 ), you’ll find traditional dishes that take you on a culinary journey through the region’s flavors.

Capital and gateway to the North of Portugal, Porto is both the city that provided a nation with a name and a fortified wine famous worldwide: Port Wine. With its splendid geographical location on the mouth of the river Douro and an architectural heritage of exceptional quality, the historic centre of Porto is a World Heritage Property declared by UNESCO. Its hard-working inhabitants are noted for their commercial enterprise, always standing firm against outside impositions and foreign invaders, which explains why Porto has become known as the “unvanquished” city.

When discovering Porto, you will find a traditional welcoming, and conservative environment, but also a contemporary and artistic city. This is shown in the streets, in the architecture, monuments, and museums, and in the lively terraces, restaurants, and leisure areas.

Discover Ribeira: The historic center of Porto, also known as the Ribeira, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its stunning architecture, including the Clérigos Tower and the Cathedral of Porto. The narrow streets and alleys are filled with traditional shops, cafes, and restaurants.

A bridge never too far: Porto is famous for its iconic bridges, including the Dom Luís I Bridge, which spans the Douro River and offers stunning views of the city and the river.

Experience Fado firsthand: Fado is a traditional form of music that is popular in Portugal, and Porto has several fado houses where visitors can listen to live performances.

I waited 50 years to travel to France. I imagined every detail to make my dream trip come true. I needed help in making the dream a reality.

From my first phone call to IntoThe Vineyard and meeting Morgan, to actually sitting in a vineyard in Provence sipping a chardonnay, they held my hand and planned each beautiful step. They listened to me and tailored exactly the trip I wanted. I chose to do it as a solo trip but never felt alone. The accommodations, drivers, and details all made for a flawless first-time international trip.

Madison Dreith and her team did an outstanding job of arranging a memorable visit to the Bordeaux region of France, as well as a one-day "foodie" tour of Paris. It was so easy to enjoy the trip when we had drivers who knew the area to take us to the different wineries. The restaurants selected for us to have our lunches were outstanding as well. Into the Vinyard allowed us to fully enjoy our time in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Place de Palais

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour in Bordeaux. This tour was in August so we know it was a challenge. But their delivery was World Class. The service people lined up by Into the Vineyard were engaging, thoughtful and respectful. The two hotels, although small both in number of rooms and room size, were quaint. Their breakfasts and afternoon beverage arrangements were a nice touch. The specific wine tours had much more of an educational tone to them as compared with other wine tours we experienced previously. A unique aspect of the week was a side boat trip in Archachon. It was an interesting break from the wine tours and the boat captain was incredibly humorous. Recommend this tour and this tour company highly!

Ruinart Caves tight

Booked us an amazing trip to Champagne and Corsica. We were so impressed by the quality of the hotels they recommended and the guides they paired us up with. Not only did they arrange fantastic tours of well-known wineries but also small independent ones. Super professional and their attention to detail was great. Corsica was suggested to us and was everything we wanted and more!

Brad Jantz

We just had an amazing trip to France/Spain to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. I want to thank Into the Vineyard as they picked wonderful spots for us to stay along with some amazing adventures.

Colin heard our desires and was able to point us in the right direction so that we could enjoy the experience without being constantly on the move. The part I really appreciated was that we wanted wine activities, primarily in Bordeaux, but had enough experience to plan non-wine day tours for us in the other cities, such as a Tapas tour and a cheese/barkery/chocolate tour.

1 – Cockburn’s Lodge & Cooperage

Cockburn's Lodge & Cooperage

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1407 reviews )

“Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and found the story of Cockburn port absolutely fascinating.” Anne, civitatis

Cockburn’s Lodge is one of the most unique Port wine cellars that you can visit in Porto for two reasons.

First, it’s the largest in the area, with over 10 million liters of wine aged in hundreds of wooden vats and barrels.

Second, it’s the only one with an on-site cooperage, where you can witness the coopers in action repairing barrels and fixing vats.

Each tour is the same, but the difference in ticket price determines how premium your wine and tasting room will be and whether it will be paired with cheese or chocolate.

  • Book this tour

The Cockburn’s Lodge is one of the most impressive and authentic Port wine cellars you can visit.

The facility is not only the largest in the city but also features a grand cobblestoned hallway that makes an impact when you suddenly turn a corner and face the seemingly endless rows of wooden vats and barrels.

“The views of Porto from the winery are incredible.” María José, Civitatis

Graham’s Port Lodge is one of the most internationally recognizable Port wine brands and an official Port supplier to the British royal family. Graham’s distinguished cellar and tasting rooms reflect the refined style of the stereotypically elegant English gentleman.

Whether you choose to indulge in their entry-level Ports in the main tasting room or treat yourself to a premium selection in the VIP Vintage Room, you’ll gain an appreciation of how Graham’s Port wine has consistently stood out from the pack since the early 19th century.

Graham’s and Cockburn’s are both owned and operated by the same family, Symington Family Estates , so there may be some overlap of information in the tours. However, the two brands and lodges couldn’t be more different.

Whereas Cockburn’s provides a behind-the-scenes look at the craft of the cooperage, Graham’s tasting room offers impeccable views over Porto and the riverside that are simply breathtaking.

3 – Quevedo Port Wine & Cheese or Chocolate Tasting

Quevedo Port Wine & Cheese or Chocolate Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 262 reviews )

“Excellent value for money, great guide and the port was also excellent.” Stefan, Getyourguide

Quevedo is one of the new kids on the block compared to the other Port wine houses. Established in 1993, the Quevedo brand is younger than many of the visitors who come to its tasting room.

However, the Quevedo family’s winemaking traditions go back over five generations, and this expertise is evident in the quality of their Port wine.

Although there are no Quevedo cellars to visit in Porto, there’s a beautiful two-story tasting room where you can try not only Port wine but also dry red and white wines — and even a housemade gin.

Quevedo’s wine specialist, Michael, was a gracious host for the Port wine tasting — paired with cheese and chocolate, which I highly recommend.

The low-key vibes of the space make it easy to feel comfortable and relaxed without the overly formal and rigid structure you might come across in other tastings. The aged white Ports are an uncommon style you must try while there.

4 – Porto Food & Wine Tasting Tour

Porto_ 3-Hour Food and Wine Tasting Tour - Guided Experience

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 1206 reviews )

“Our guide was fantastic! Great food and wine – lots of fun! Easy walking and a nice small group. Highly recommended!” Kathryn, Viator

The tour provider, Bluedragon , runs this popular walking tour. You’ll have the opportunity to sample authentic Portuguese wine and cuisine in five typical bars, cafes and restaurants across Porto’s historic downtown.

There will be a maximum of 15 participants on this tour, but if you prefer a more intimate and personalized experience, you can upgrade to the private tour option. Whatever option you choose, your taste buds will be delighted with sweet and savory pastries washed down with sweet and dry wines.

The quality of a food and wine tasting tour is all about choosing the most authentic and traditional eateries in the city. On this tour, you’ll not only enjoy the best flavors of Porto but also experience them in places that the locals have frequented for generations.

5 – Sweet Port & Dry Wine Walking Tour

Porto_ Port and Douro Wine Walking Tour with Tastings

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 642 reviews )

“We had the most amazing afternoon! our guide was so lovely and would keep checking in to see if we had any queries and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We would 100% recommend doing this tour!” Heather, Getyourguide

If you want to try some non-sweet Douro wines along with some Port, this is the tour for you. Enjoy a total of 10 tastings at three different wine cellars while learning about the history of producing fortified and non-fortified wines in the Douro Valley.

You’ll meet your EFun tour guide along the riverside of the Cais de Gaia and then stroll around the cobblestone alleyways from one wine cellar to the next to sample the best Port and Douro wines that each one has to offer.

Without a doubt, you get plenty of bang for your buck with this tour as far as wine tasting goes. The chance to try ten different wines in just a few hours is a challenge that most wine lovers would happily accept.

This is also a good option if someone in your party stubbornly opposes sweet wines, as traditional robust red wines are also on the menu.

6 – City Lovers Wine Tasting Tour

Porto_ Walking and Wine Tasting Tour with Snacks

Rating: ⭐️ 4.4/5 ( 1339 reviews )

“Daniela was a knowledgeable guide with lots of historic facts about Porto. The walking gave a great view of the city, and the wine tastings were amazing.” Tej, Getyourguide

This City Lovers tour is a great choice if you want to try three very different, yet all iconic, styles of Portuguese wine — from the lightest of the light Vinho Verde to the boldest Douro reds and luxurious Port wines, your palate will need to use the full range of its taste buds with plenty of smoked meats and cheeses to keep up the tempo.

Starting at either Restaurante MO in the center of Porto or by the bridge in the Cais de Ribeira, your guide is ready to take you on a gastronomic adventure with some of the best flavors Portugal has to offer.

This is a fantastic money-for-value option, as you’ll get plenty of Portuguese tapas and different styles of wine.

Book this tour at the beginning of your stay, and that way, you’ll know which styles of Portuguese wines you prefer to help narrow down the hunt for goodies during the rest of your trip.

7 – Petiscos & Wine Tour

Petiscos & Wine Tour in Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 115 reviews )

“Great way to get a taste of Porto! Experienced tucked away places that we wouldn’t have found on our own.” Julie, Viator

Let Food Lover Tour guide you and your palate to the tastiest and most authentic bars and restaurants in the historic city center of Porto.

You’ll have a chance to try typical Portuguese tapas (or petiscos, as the Portuguese say) and sample different styles of red, white, sparkling and fortified wines.

This tour will only have a maximum of 10 participants, so you’re guaranteed to enjoy the intimacy of a small group experience while receiving the guide’s full attention for any questions you might have, like “Can I try some more of that?”

This experience has an almost perfect five-star rating on Viator, which speaks to the quality of the food, wine and guide that you’ll have on this tour.

The tour starts at 6 PM, and you’ll eat enough to fill you up, so why not book this experience over a sit-down dinner and try a larger variety of food and wine at more locations?

8 – Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip

Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip from Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 4327 reviews )

“Perfect tour of the Douro Valley. Guide was fantastic – informative and engaging. Wineries and food were excellent. Small group in a comfortable minibus. Couldn’t have asked for more.” Adam, Viator

The well-known and respectable tour provider, Living Tours , operates this full-day tour to the heart of the Douro Valley from Porto.

While enjoying the unparalleled views of the Douro River Valley, you’ll be treated to wine tastings at prestigious estates and a regional lunch at a local restaurant.

Another highlight of this unforgettable tour is the river cruise in Pinhão on a traditional Rabelo-style boat to experience how wine was transported down this river for centuries.

Visiting the Douro Valley is a must-do while in Porto. This tour package provides a convenient and affordable way to try some of the best wines and cuisine in this region without having the worry about navigating around these sometimes hair-raising roads (which is even less fun after a few glasses of Port!).

9 – Small Group Douro Valley Tour

Small Group Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip from Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 3178 reviews )

“Our tour to Douro valley was the highlight of our trip to Portugal. We visited two wineries, had a delicious lunch at another winery, and did a cruise down the river as well.” Shobi, Viator

Let CoolTour Oporto take you and just a few others on a scenic day trip to the Douro Valley from Porto.

On a small group tour to the heart of this scenic UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll visit several wineries and indulge in a typical regional lunch.

There’s no need to worry about rushing to a pickup point in the city, as this tour includes hotel pickup at no extra cost. Sit back, relax and get ready to ride through the awe-inspiring rolling hills of the incomparable Douro River Valley.

Compared to a large group tour with dozens of fellow travelers, this small group tour is only slightly more expensive and is well worth it, considering the added comfort and attentiveness you’ll have from your guide and hosts at the wineries.

10 – Three Douro Vineyards & Lunch

Douro Valley Wine Tour from Porto with Lunch and Tastings at Three Vineyards

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 1053 reviews )

“Fantastic trip out to the Douro Valley. A lot of thought has gone into the Wineries selected, with the intention to support locally owned vineyards. A great level of foundational knowledge supplied by both the driver and the vineyard staff. Exceptionally helpful staff as well!” Zoe, Viator

Another popular experience organized by EFun Tours takes you on a wine-tasting journey to three different vineyards in the terraced hills of the Douro Valley.

You’ll have a chance to walk through legendary estates, such as Quinta das Casterlares and Quinta da Roêda, and try their remarkable wines.

In between the winery visits, you’ll stop at the town of Pinhão for a hearty lunch overlooking the Douro River and the valley’s seemingly endless hills that fade into the horizon.

This experience is similar to the other Douro Valley day trips. However, the main difference is the lack of possibility to add a Douro River boat cruise to your excursion. If this is a must-do for you, it’s better to choose one of the other tours, but if you’d rather visit three wineries instead of two, this is the tour package for you.

11 – Private Douro River Cruise plus Vineyards & Lunch

Private Douro Valley River Cruise plus Two Vineyards and Lunch

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 651 reviews )

“This was one of the best wine tours I’ve ever been on. Not only were the wines and ports fantastic, but our guides and the winemaker made the tour and explanations fun and interesting—this wasn’t stuffy at all like some wine tours can be and the group was laughing the whole time! The lunch place is beautiful with panoramic views of the Douro Valley (…) ” Madeline, Getyourguide

Take a day trip to the Douro from Porto with the tour provider, aDayinDouro . This experience is more intimate than many of the other Douro tours, as you’ll be having a home-cooked meal by a professional chef at the family’s very own winery.

Besides the incredible lunch overlooking the Douro Valley, you’ll also enjoy a riverboat cruise with onboard snacks and drinks. After this, you’ll visit two wineries in the region to taste a selection of dry and Port wines.

As guests must be at least 12 years old for this tour, this may be a disqualifier for many of you, so you’ll need to choose another tour on our list. If this isn’t an issue for you, take advantage of this opportunity to have a more intimate experience in the Douro with a family-owned winery and smaller estates in the region.

12 – Private Wine Tour in the Douro Valley

Private Wine Tour in the Douro Valley

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 193 reviews )

“We felt like we were spending a day with family. We learned so much about the valley, and about port wines and food. We had the most amazing lunch in such a beautiful region, it seemed like a dream. Choose this tour with confidence, it’s like no other!” Patricia, Viator

Tourvent offers one of the most exclusive and highly rated day trips to the Douro from Porto, which is why it’s one of the few tours you can find on Viator with a nearly perfect five-star rating and no review below four stars.

On this Douro tour, you’ll not only visit several Quintas for private wine tastings and enjoy a three-course meal at one of the finest restaurants in the region but, during all this, you’ll be accompanied by one of the best guides in the area to make you feel at home and cared for at every step of the way.

The Viator ratings and reviews on this tour truly speak for themselves — you’re simply guaranteed to have a good time with this experience. Although the price per person is slightly higher than the group tours, you’ll be ensured that your private day trip to the Douro is truly special for you and your loved ones.

13 – Douro Valley & Mateus Palace Small-Group Tour

Douro Valley & Mateus Palace Small-Group Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 36 reviews )

“Pedro from North on Wheels is a wonderful guide! He is knowledgeable, professional, patient and a fun person to spend the day with. Highly Recommend! Weather, food, scenery were all perfect!” Kathy, Viator

North-on-Wheels organizes this intimate tour into the Douro Valley in a private Mercedes van for groups of only up to 5 people at a time. This is a great bargain for a private or nearly private tour, depending on how many are in your party.

Besides some of the typical stops of all Douro Valley tours, this excursion also includes a stop at Mateus Palace in Vila Real. As opposed to the other tours, it has a detailed itinerary so you can already know exactly where you’ll be visiting on this tour.

Although this tour has fewer reviews than the other Douro tours, it’s notable that none of the reviews are below five stars. This certainly speaks to the high quality of the organization of the tour and the attentiveness of the guide, who’s mentioned in nearly every review.

14 – Cálem Port Wine Cellars & Fado Show

Cálem Port Wine Cellars & Fado Show

Rating: ⭐️ 4.4/5 ( 1997 reviews )

“The Fado show was absolutely fantastic.” Akvile, Getyourguide

The Cálem Cellars and Fado Show is certainly a crowd favorite among visitors to Porto.

Not only do you get to take a tour of the Cálem Cellars where they store and age millions of liters of Port wine, but you also get to sample two glasses of their Port while enjoying a live show of Fado music.

Before your tour starts, you can enjoy a modern Port wine museum in the waiting area. During the tour, you’ll also be treated to innovative installations that help demonstrate the capacity and functionality of the large vats and barrels.

Although Cálem Cellar tours are not the most exclusive experience with group sizes of up to 45 people, the guide will give you a comprehensive overview of how the different styles of Port wine are made.

This is a perfect introduction for those just discovering Port wine, and the fado show during the tasting makes for a complete Portuguese experience at an excellent price.

Casa do Fado Live Concert & Port Wine Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 2811 reviews )

“We really enjoyed the Fado show experience. The singer was very talented as well as the guitar players. Performance was excellent along with great space acoustics! We felt that they were successful in transmiting knowledge and enthusiasm for Fado music. we highly recommend it.” Monalisa, Viator

At Casa do Fado , you can sip on Port wine while enjoying a live Fado concert .

During the show, you’ll learn about the history of the emblematic wine and about the genre of Fado music, including its development over the centuries, particularly in Lisbon and Coimbra.

Casa do Fado has three different locations in the historic center of Porto, so you can attend a show that’s closest to your accommodation or near a restaurant that you plan to visit for some grilled fish or the typical Francesinha.

This Fado show and port wine tasting is a great option if you prefer to hear live music over a guided tour, or simply as an additional wine tasting experience after visiting the cellars in Gaia or the vineyards in the Douro.

16 – Casa da Guitarra Fado Show & Wine Tasting

Casa da Guitarra Fado Show & Wine Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1752 reviews )

“spacious room, authentic and modern at the same time. We had a wonderful time! With two exceptional singers and musicians! It has become a must-visit place for us in Porto.” Reko, Getyourguide

Casa da Guitarra offers one of the best fado shows in the city , which is paired with a Port wine tasting free of charge.

This is your chance to see how a Portuguese-style guitar is played and accompanied by the beautifully melancholic Fado singers.

An illustrated postcard about the history of Fado is included with your entry ticket — the perfect keepsake to take home with you and remember this unforgettable music and wine experience in Porto.

An added bonus of this fado concert and Port wine tasting experience is the venue itself. Casa da Guitarra features an exhibition of traditional Portuguese instruments, including the viola de Fado. This show is perfect for both wine and music lovers.

17 – Fado na Baixa Port Wine & Live Music

Fado na Baixa Port Wine & Live Music

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1639 reviews )

“Excellent experience. The mix of music, the history of Fado and a glass of Port wine constitutes an incredible experience. I would recommend it for those who try Fado for the first time but even for someone with a little more experience.” Jaime, Getyourguide

Fado na Baixa offers one of the most comprehensive Fado experiences in Porto .

The show is divided into four segments and features four musicians that’ll take you on a journey through traditional Fado from Lisbon, Coimbra-style Fado and the legendary songs of Amalia Rodrigues.

All of this will be paired with a chilled glass of tawny port for a sip of comforting sweetness to complement the melancholic melodies coming from the stage.

Fado na Baixa has a rotating cast of performers, so chances are you would be able to catch a different show each day of the week. That being said, all the singers and musicians are some of the best performers of Fado that you can see in downtown Porto.

18 – World of Wine Museum Entry & Tasting

World of Wine Museum Entry & Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 18 reviews )

“Fabulous place to know about the life of grapes. How fascinating the storytelling to explain the beauty and hardship to turn the beautiful berries into something so elegant and classy.” Cheng, Headout

The World of Wine is much more than a single museum. This wine-themed amusement park of sorts is actually a collection of six separate museums that focus on cork-making, rosé, fashion, history and even chocolate.

This ticket grants entry to the Wine Experience museum, where you can explore interactive installations about everything you need to know about wine.

Learn how and where wine is made and the history of glass bottle making. Then, walk through a blind aroma exhibit where you can try to smell the subtle notes commonly found in white and red wines.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind wine experience in Vila Nova de Gaia. One highlight of the Wine Experience museum is the small cinema showing a film on the landscapes and wine regions of Portugal. Be sure not to skip it!

After your visit, there are plenty of chic restaurants with wonderful riverside views inside the WOW facilities where you can have a snack or scrumptious meal. In one restaurant, you can even dine inside a giant wine barrel!

19 – Vinho Verde Wine Tasting & Picnic at Quinta Santa Cristina

Vinho Verde Wine Tasting & Picnic at Quinta Santa Cristina

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 3 reviews )

“What a wonderful experience from start to finish! Transport was on time, friendly and the vehicle was clean. It was a beautiful drive from Porto to the Vineyard. Once you arrive at the property you are immediately greeted by the most beautiful panoramic views of the vineyard and the mountains. (…) The wine is amazing, and the food was delicious! Highly recommend this experience for couples and groups!” Catherine, Viator

Although the Douro Valley and Port wine might be the first things that come to mind when thinking about wine tours and tastings near Porto, you shouldn’t overlook its closest wine region, Vinho Verde, and a chance to visit Quinta de Santa Cristina .

The name of this wine style and region literally translates to “green wine,” but the most typical example of this wine is white in color, low alcohol, delicately aromatic and slightly sparkling.

This tour is a great opportunity to try this wine as it’s meant to be enjoyed — in the sunshine paired with a picnic and beautiful views.

If you’re looking for a wine-tasting experience at a vineyard near Porto and don’t have the time or endurance for a full-day trip to the Douro Valley, this half-day wine tour to Quinta Santa Cristina is a wonderful substitute.

You can spend the day sipping wine with vineyard views and still be back in time to hit the streets of Porto in the early evening.

20 – Private Dão Region Wine Tour from Porto

Private Dão Region Wine Tour from Porto

“The vehicle was very nice, clean and equipped with water. We were able to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. The tour was very interesting and Carlos is very well informed and knowledgeable.” Diana, Viator

Endless Weekend Tours runs this private tour for up to 7 people to the Dão wine region.

Located southeast of Porto, the Dão wine region may be lesser known than its more famous counterparts to the north, the Douro and Vinho Verde regions, but it’s not to be missed.

Dão DOC is traditionally known for its sparkling wines that many say can rival even the best examples of Cava and Champagne, but they also produce aromatic whites and reds, which are more floral and lighter-bodied due to the higher altitudes and cooler temperatures in this region.

This tour takes you to a castle and cathedral in Lamego and Viseu before visiting different vineyards for wine tastings.

As this is a private tour, you can customize your stops to focus on the styles of wine you prefer or spend more time in museums and historical sites. Make sure to discuss your preferences with your guide before your Dão trip.

How Do I Get from Porto to the Douro Valley?

These amazing wine tours from Porto are some of the most popular in the region

When it comes to getting from Porto to the Douro Valley, you have several options. As you probably guessed owing to the valley’s superb location on the Douro River, you can take a boat trip if you wish!

This is easily the most scenic of the following routes since you’ll be surrounded by local villages, lush green mountainsides, and seemingly endless wine vineyards everywhere you look.

The majority of river cruises to the Douro Valley take around 6 hours and depart from the Vila Nova de Gaia’s Quay in Porto and vary in pricing. Some include meals and free wine, whereas some are simply means of transportation.

✔️ By Train

If you prefer to get to the Douro Valley on your own, you have the option of taking the train directly from Porto. This is also one of the most scenic methods as the tracks travel right along the Douro River!

This method takes around 2 hours from Porto’s Campanha Station and is both a scenic and efficient way of getting from Porto to the Douro Valley.

For an in-depth look at the train ride from Lisbon to Porto, read up on the article: Lisbon to Porto Train: Everything You Need to Know

If you wish to reach the Douro Valley by bus from Porto, you’ll need to get your tickets at the Campo 24 de Agosto Station. The journey lasts about 2 hours and is a bit less scenic and less comfortable than the previous two options.

It is usually the cheapest option of getting from Porto to Douro Valley, however.

If you wish to drive yourself or hire a private driver to get you from Porto to the Douro Valley, then a rental car is likely in your future.

This is going to be the most expensive of your options (though the river cruise may be more expensive), but it will get you to Douro Valley in the shortest amount of time in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

It also provides you the most flexibility since you’ll be on your own schedule and you’ll have more opportunities to stop for pictures along the drive.

You will need to pay attention to toll roads, however, so be sure to carry both cash and credit card on you along the journey.

Things to Know Before Taking a Wine Tour from Porto

vineyard tours porto portugal

If you’re thinking of picking one of the below wine tours from Porto, that’s awesome! They’re going to provide you with some amazing memories and really cool experiences in Portugal’s best wineries and terraced vineyards.

But, before you go… there are a few things I should note:

✔️ If you don’t like wine… that’s okay!

Of course, everyone around you will be tasting wine, but if you simply want to join a tour to learn more about wine and get a chance to explore a beautiful region with a local, you can definitely do that.

✔️ You have SO many options

If you don’t want to spend an entire day in the wineries and vineyards, you can opt for a half-day or even just a couple of hours doing some wine tastings at a single vineyard. There really is something for everyone.

✔️ The Douro Valley is the cream of the crop

There are plenty of amazing wine tours from Porto, but we mostly recommend the ones that bring you to the coveted Douro Valley.

There’s a reason that this region lures in wine connoisseurs from around the globe, so we suggest that if you really enjoy wine, get yourself to the Douro Valley pronto!

✔️ You don’t need to be rich to go on a luxurious wine tour from Porto!

We cover this more below, but you can find great tours for much less than you might expect.

Tours that include meals will naturally be more expensive than the ones that don’t, so pick a tour that is best for you and your budget. You can always bring your own lunch and just opt for the fantastic wine tastings!

The Best Season to Experience Wine Tastings and Tours in Porto & Douro

The harvest season of September through October is the best time to take one of these wine tours from Porto

Portugal is known for its comfortable temperatures year-round with just a few outlier days in the summers and winters. This makes it possible to enjoy wine tours and visits to vineyards whenever you plan on visiting Portugal.

However, we have found that the best season to visit Porto and the Douro Valley for wine tours is during the harvest season . This is when the vineyards are overflowing with plump grapes and the foliage just started along the Douro River.

The harvest season months typically fall between September and October , but the season may begin earlier or later depending on how hot and dry the summer months were.

This is also when you’ll get to experience the vineyards with fewer tourists since school has started and most summer breaks are over.

If you have the option of joining one of the below wine tours from Porto in the fall months, do it! You may be able to save a considerable amount on tours in the off-season.

What to Bring With You on a Wine Tour from Porto

vineyard tours porto portugal

I’m suuuper guilty of packing things that I never end up using on my travels (I’m working on it…), but I don’t want the same for you.

It’s always difficult to know what you should bring when you’re going on a guided tour, especially if there is no designated “packing list”, so I’ve rounded up just a few items that you’ll be happy to have with you on your wine tour from Porto.

First, a reusable water bottle with a filter . You’re going to be drinking a solid amount of wine, so staying hydrated will help keep you standing and will help curb your hangover the next day. Both are very important…

I like this one since it has a 2-step filtering process and if I’m not super comfortable drinking the tap water, I can just drink it through this bottle and not have to worry.

I’ve brought this same bottle to 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and even 4 th world countries (yes, there is such as thing as a 4th world country!) and I’ve never gotten sick from the water that came through this bottle.

✔️ Just to note … I was filling up this bottle in hotel rooms, bathroom faucets, airport taps, and so forth. It also saved me a lot of money from buying bottled water!

Second, a good camera . The Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in not only Portugal or Europe, but the world. You’re going to witness breathtaking vistas that you’ll surely want some high-quality pictures of.

If you’re using your phone as your primary camera, I also suggest bringing along a spare battery pack if your phone is prone to dying quickly.

Third, sunblock and a hat . Even if you’re visiting during the harvest season, you may be walking through very open fields with no shade cover on a very sunny day in Portugal.

Your best bet is to only bring a little day pack with you. Something that is just large enough to carry your water bottle, the sunblock, your battery pack and charger, and maybe a sweater if the temperature starts to drop.

This backpack is my favorite ! It comes in a multitude of colors, is super affordable, and is very durable and water-resistant. I bring it everywhere I travel!

That’s it! You really won’t need much else. Some spare euros would also be good to tip the guides after the tour.

What to Expect on Your Wine Tour from Porto

On these wine tours from Porto, you can expect to taste numerous types of wines and be surrounded by beautiful scenery

Depending on which of the wine tours from Porto you take, you’ll generally have a good idea of what to expect right after you book.

The tours I have listed below go in-depth on safety and health practices (especially important during Covid-19), whether your tour will have a private guide, where you’ll be picked up and dropped off, the types of wines you’ll be tasting, the vineyards and wineries you’ll be visiting, if meals are included, and so forth.

We only recommend reputable tours that go above and beyond to ensure you have a truly enjoyable experience, and that are fully transparent with what is and is not included.

This way, you can be confident that you’ll know what to expect on your wine tour and you can ensure yourself a pleasant experience.

Douro Valley Wine vs. Port Wine

On these wine tours from Porto, you'll get to taste both Port wine and Douro Valley wine

You’re probably wondering… “is there a difference between Port wine and Douro Valley wine?” and the answer is a little bit confusing, but I’m here to help!

Port wines are fortified which means they have a higher alcohol content in comparison to regular wines. The Douro Valley primarily produces Port wines, so you’ll be primarily (if not exclusively) sampling Port wines on any of the above wine tours from Porto.

An average glass of wine typically runs at about 12-15% alcohol, whereas a glass of Port wine will come in around 18-20% alcohol. Needless to say, you won’t need to drink as much wine in Porto to catch a buzz as you would elsewhere.

The name “Port wine” comes from the name of the city: Porto! Port wine, or Porto wine, originates in this region of Portugal and can actually only be legally produced in the Douro Valley.

So, if you take one of the wine tours from Porto that I mentioned, you can guarantee that you’ll be tasting something that you can’t try anywhere else in the world!

Thus, the terms Port wine and Douro Valley wine are practically interchangeable, however, there is a small chance that you may find some other wines in the Douro Valley that are not Port wines.

Where to Stay in Porto

vineyard tours porto portugal

When it comes to visiting Portugal’s most popular port city, you have several options for choosing where to stay.

Porto’s most popular neighborhoods include Ribeira , Baixa , São Bento , and Clérigos . This is where you’ll find the popular streets such as the popular Avenida dos Aliados and many restaurants, cafes, bars, and the majority of the city’s nightlife.

Clérigos is Porto’s art district, so if you’re in search of more quiet evenings nearby museums, art exhibits, and galleries, this is a great spot to rest your head for the night!

These neighborhoods are among the best places to stay in Porto since you’ll be nearby public transportation, be close to scenic overlooks, only be a moment’s walk from a restaurant or bar, and you’ll be within walking distance to the city’s most iconic landmarks!

After lunch, you will cross the symbolic Douro River on the Eiffel inspired Dom Luis Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where you will visit a famous port wine cellar for a tour and tasting, learning all about the production, harvesting and transporting of this world famous drink.

Next, drive along Boavista Avenue, the longest avenues in Portugal, where you will see the award-winning "Casa da Música" (House of Music - Concert Hall) and witness some remarkable manor homes lining this picturesque avenue.

The spiritual home of Port wine, Douro is the oldest wine region in the world. The Douro Demarcated Wine Region dates back to 1756 and was established in the reign of King José I by his minister Marquês de Pombal. Wineries in Porto & Douro are along the axis of the Douro River and divided into 3 sub-regions: Douro Superior, Alto Corgo and the Baixo Corgo. The denomination "Port" is explained by the fact that the wine is stored and commercialized from the port located between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The best season to visit wineries in Douro & Porto

There's no bad time to visit  wineries in Porto & Douro  as there is always something on offer that should suit your interests. Celebrations and seasons are accompanied by log fires and sunny dispositions. And there is always the pleasure of discovering an amazing wine, especially to sit back and relax with a stunning  Port . If you like to enjoy the sun and even get a little tan on the beaches, ride a bicycle downtown, travel on foot, and discover the trails, from  April  to  September  the weather and temperatures are very good for this kind of activity.

What are the wineries in Porto & Douro like?

In one of the wildest, most mountainous, and rugged wine regions of Portugal,  wineries in Porto & Douro  defied gravity on the steep slopes along the banks of the  Douro River  and its tributaries and planted the vines in poor, schistose soils. Carrying centuries of tradition, wineries in Porto & Douro are small family enterprises producing wines with personality, character, and excellent taste. In their vineyards you will find vines that are  over 100 years old , producing a low amount of high-quality grapes.

Most common grape varieties and styles of wines produced in Porto & Douro

Some of the grape varieties that  wineries in Porto & Douro  use for the production of Port Wine are:

  • Touriga Nacional,
  • Touriga Franca,
  • Tinta Barroca,
  • Aragonez (locals call it Tinta Roriz), and,

Douro Valley self-guided wine tour from Porto

And so in spring 2024, we decided to make up for lost time and spend a few weeks in the Douro Valley. We were actually staying up in the mountains, in a tiny village called Vinhos (population: 176!) in the Vila Real District, but this time we had plenty of opportunity to explore the food and restaurants, and to take our own Douro Valley wine tour. I’ve written this article in the format of a day trip from Porto, because that’s how the majority of first-time visitors experience the Douro, but in fact I pieced this itinerary together over a few different outings from our digs in Vinhos.

Travel to, and transport from, Porto

The city of Porto is accessible by plane via all the usual airlines: Transavia and KLM from the Netherlands; TAP Air Portugal , easyJet and Ryanair from the UK. Having spent a few days exploring, eating and drinking in Porto (more on that in my Porto restaurant guide ), you have a couple of different options for reaching the Douro:

  • Take the train to Pinhão – this takes around 2 hours and 20 minutes and is the cheapest option;
  • Rent a car and self-drive – we found this to be the easiest and quickest option (at around 1 hour and 45 minutes from Porto to Pinhão) but is of course pricier;
  • Travel by boat – these are usually in the form of organised cruises, and as such this self-guided wine tour won’t really apply.

This itinerary is based on the driving option, although you could do most of it by train as well.

Morning: boat cruise from Pinhão

Pinhão is arguably the geographical heart of port wine country, so it makes a logical location to start your day. It’s a picturesque little town in its own right, perched on the north bank of the Douro River, and gets very busy in high season. We were there in April and it was ideal: warm but not too hot, not particularly crowded, and very green. Pinhão is also home to one of the most beautiful railway stations Portugal, with impressive tile panels that depict the history of life in the Douro (and a good reason to take the train!).

vineyard tours porto portugal

Lunchtime: Cardanho dos Presuntos

You’re going to be doing some serious wine tasting in the afternoon and evening, so it’s a good idea to keep lunch light to avoid getting too sleepy. (Or perhaps you’d prefer to make it heavy to soak up the alcohol?) Anyway, that was our thinking when we went to Cardanho dos Presuntos in Pinhão for lunch: presunto means ham in Portuguese, so you can expect plenty of variations on cured pork, plus cheeses, bread and a few other nibbles. Pair with a refreshing glass of Douro rosé and you’re all set to hit the quintas …

vineyard tours porto portugal

Winery 1: Quinta do Bomfim

Just past the train station (in the opposite direction to the boats), you’ll reach Quinta do Bomfim – a winery that I was surprised to discover is owned by the British Symington family (in fact, a lot of the port houses are owned by British families). But try not to let that put you off because it really is breathtaking. Guided tours are available, but even if all you do is sit on the terrace overlooking the river, you will feel like an insanely glamourous rich person. Luckily, you do not need to actually be an insanely glamorous rich person (I am a freelance writer in pyjamas 90% of the time) – you’ll be treated like royalty anyway. It probably helped that the women serving us fell in love with our tiny dog, but she was also a fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm about the port wines we tasted.

vineyard tours porto portugal

I went for a 1998 Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) and a 20-year aged Tawny port, both from Dow’s (Dow’s is the brand name, but they come from the same quinta ). Both had the benefit of not being overly sweet, but the LBV had a firm tannic structure and clear ruby fruits, while the Tawny sang with gently oxidised caramel, apricots and nuts. Then again, pretty much anything would’ve tasted amazing with that view…

Winery 2: Quinta do Tedo

The N222 road, which connects Pinhão to Peso da Régua, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful driving roads in the world. Which is why my next winery pick – Quinta do Tedo – is about a 15-minute drive from Pinhão alongside the river. This is the only part of the itinerary it wouldn’t be possible to do by train, but you could by boat. The views from Quinta do Tedo are spectacular (although you’ll have come to expect that by this point), orienting towards the Tedo tributary to the south.

vineyard tours porto portugal

Quinta do Tedo also offers plenty of award-winning port to taste, but we decided to try a couple of their unfortified wines instead. Their rosé was nothing to write home about, but we couldn’t get enough of their 2019 reserva red blend, which was smooth with oaky vanilla and ripe with black cherries and plums. I bought a bottle to take home with us, and they gave us the tasting glasses for free, which was a welcome surprise!

Evening: Peso da Régua

From Quinta do Tedo, continue along the N222 in the same direction for another 16 kilometres and you’ll reach Peso da Régua: less visually appealing than Pinhão but equally accessible by train and with plenty of good restaurants and wine bars to tempt the curious vinophile…

Dinner: Castas e Pratos

With its chic downstairs wine bar, its upstairs restaurant overlooking the train tracks, and its quiet but expansive terrace outside, Castas e Pratos is the kind of multi-functional space that looks like it would suit a range of occasions. You could stick with the wine and snacks theme, but I’d recommend going all-in for a proper dinner on the elegant rail-side terrace.

vineyard tours porto portugal

The wine list is a tad intimidating: you’re faced with 104 pages of Portuguese wines, from €20 house wine up to bottles costing well over €1,000. Frustratingly, having finally chosen one, they’d sold out – so I cut my losses and went back to the selection on the first page. We eventually ended up with the 2020 Lote 5 reserva, because (let’s face it) you can’t really go wrong with a Douro red blend.

vineyard tours porto portugal

Castas e Pratos’ menu is more creative than many you’ll come across in Portugal, which made a welcome change. To start, we tried the foie gras with pineapple chutney and port wine reduction, which I should perhaps have paired with a port. Next, we split two mains: the black pork with black truffle and egg on toast, and the grilled octopus, which was so meltingly tender that Mr Foodie declared it the best octopus he’d ever eaten. I don’t usually do dessert, but on this occasion I felt like trying “The Lemon”: it was essentially a lemon cheesecake but formed in the shape of an entire lemon. It was, as you might expect, very lemony!

Pre- or post-dinner drinks: Pecados do Vinho

Right next to Castas e Pratos along the same little strip, you’ll find a generous handful of wine-focused bars – each serving their own selections of Portuguese wines, from Douro ports to sparkling whites to classic reds. We particularly liked Pecados do Vinho , which felt small and intimate but still had a huge selection (the walls are lined with wine bottles in every direction). Before dinner, go for a local aperitif: white port mixed with tonic and a twist of lemon zest – an intensely refreshing way to enjoy port when it’s still warm outside. After dinner, pop back for a full-bodied vintage port – the perfect way to end the night…

Best Things to Do in Porto, Portugal

Best things to do in porto portugal.

Porto is… a city torn between the currents of time. On one hand, is firmly rooted in the past with its history and culture in full display. On the other hand, it reaches out excitedly towards the future, complete with all the modern conveniences.

In between, Porto has its unique charm. Whether it’s a rustic view of the river or the countryside, a warm shot of port, or a welcoming smile from one of its locals, there are many things to do in Porto.

Also read: 10 Day Portugal Itinerary

Which is amazing, since it’s Portugal ’s second prime city. And yet it’s not one that’s trapped in the ravages of modernization, its skyline not ruined by the skyscrapers of today’s metropolis. There’s modern architecture, yes, but there’s also the raw street art not too far away from the classic tourist sights of museums and cathedrals.

Like in many other grand cities of the world, you could easily stay here for a week and still be fascinated. But if you don’t have that time, we have curated the best of Porto into this ultimate guide that will get you going!

If you want something a little more relaxed, you can also take a look at these Yoga Retreats in Portugal – some of them are located near beautiful Porto.

Porto Attractions

One of the main reasons why Porto draws a lot of tourists is because of its laid-back environment. Europe can be a pretty hectic place for a tourist (maybe not for a local) because of the many things to see, and Porto allows you an opportunity to just sit back or maybe take a slow stroll while appreciating what it has to offer. Even with a laid-back town like Porto, it’s best to be prepared with the Porto Pass to get you where you need to go.

That does not mean there aren’t a lot of Porto sights, though. Between the beautiful landscapes and the museums, your eyes will have a lot to feast on!

Porto Sights: Sé Cathedral

You don’t have to be a Catholic to appreciate the grandness of the Cathedral otherwise known simply as “Sé”. The stone structure hails back to the 13th century, and has a myriad of architectural influences from the Gothic to the Romanesque.

It’s hard to miss its silver altarpiece and its ceramic-tiled cloister, among the many treasures that lie in its otherwise simple (at least in comparison with other European cathedrals) façade.

Of course, its fortress-like vantage point also gives way to an amazing view of the city below, with its orange-brown roofs. The cathedral’s terrace overlooks this perfectly, giving you some really Instagrammable shots at some quality Porto attractions!

To get to the Sé, alight at the São Bento stop of the D (yellow) rail line. There’s a EUR 3 cost to enter the cloister, but the rest of the Cathedral is free. The Sé is open daily from 9AM to 6PM.

Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

The name translates to “Crystal Palace Gardens”, and while no Crystal Palace is in sight (it was demolished in 1956) the gardens are really worth your while. The flowers, greenery, fountains, and general ambience feels like the set of one of those Hollywood period films about royalties! There are even peacocks that roam here, though they can be quite shy.

There’s a pavilion here for events, though it’s quite plain. It’s best to stick to the multitude of flower classes here and the priceless view of the Douro River!

There are two metro stops near the Jardins — the Aliados stop of the yellow line, and the Carolina Michaelis stop that services all the other lines. There are also bus routes, and you can catch either Bus No. 200 or 207 and get off the Palácio stop.

Dom Luís I Bridge

Bridges aren’t always likely candidates for top things to do in a city, but the Dom Luís I Bridge is especially interesting. Aside from being an important artery of traffic in Porto, the bridge was the product of a student of Gustave Eiffel — the architectural similarities between this and Paris’ top attraction is readily visible. It was also once the longest iron arch bridge in the world.

But what really makes it great is the spectacular view it affords of the Douro River. Pedestrians can walk along the sides of the bridge’s two levels. As a plus, there are also great wineries nearby!

The bridge is on the northern side of Vila Nova de Gaia. If you’re walking, you can take the metro to São Bento or Jardim do Morro stations, serviced by the yellow line.

Sogrape Vinhos Wineries

Speaking of wineries, this is one thing you really should do before leaving Porto ! Port wine is definitely one of the city’s greatest creations. And Sogrape Vinhos is one of the most distinguished in this regard, owning three cellars (Sandeman, Ferreira, and Offley) in Vila Nova de Gaia.

You can visit all three of them, and each one has a distinguished history starting from the 1700s. Aside from the port, keep your eyes peeled for the photographs and other memento from their rich history!

A wine-tasting experience could cost anywhere from EUR 3 to EUR 35 depending on how intimate you want to get with Porto’s beloved export. There’s a basic wine tour across all three that costs around EUR 10.

All cellars can be reached via the Jardim do Morro stop on the metro’s yellow line.

Estacão de São Bento

We’ve been talking about railway stations for some time now, but did you know that there is a station in Porto that is a tourist attraction on its own? This is the São Bento station, with which you can reach southeast of the Avenida dos Aliados (the main tourist avenue of Porto, with lots of cool shops and cafés). This makes it a no-brainer to get here. The station is on the yellow line, and you can enter and walk around for free.

The station is built on the former site of a monastery, and its claim to fame is the painstakingly painted and installed azulejos , blue and white tiles that together make up a mural-esque pictorial history of Portugal. The installation was so momentous it took a decade to finish it!

There’s also the architecture of the station itself, which makes it a really unique and must-see attraction.

Eating like a local in Porto

Most tourists see the food scene of Porto as a never-ending parade of sardines and chouriço. While salted fish is indeed an indelible part of the cuisine (and history) of Portugal as a whole, there are some really good and interesting eats here you should try.

Francesinha

This might be unfamiliar to first-time tourists, which is a shame. This is a sandwich that’s piling on a steak, three different types of sausages, and served with a fried egg and french fries. Oh, did I mention the entire thing is covered in melted cheese? There’s a super secret sauce, too, which they say is made from meat, seafood, and various types of alcohol. Make sure you check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels before you try this! Or maybe don’t bother and just enjoy.

This is one of Porto’s staple dishes, and you would really enjoy it if you choose the right francesinha place. Check out Francesinha Café over at Rua da Alegria. If you want a setting that’s a bit more intimate, there’s Yuko Tavern at Rua de Costa Cabral.

Alheira: Northern Portugal

If you can’t get enough of meat, these white smoked sausages endemic to the North Portuguese regions will give you your fill! The sausages are made from a variety of meats, from poultry to game (the latter including rabbit and venison). While these sausages are found all over Portugal, there’s no better place to have them in than in Porto.

If you want the traditional homemade quality alheira, head over to the Mercado do Bolhão and buy some raw alheira! The place is at Rua da Alegria. Make sure to stop and have a chat with the sellers to know more about the sausage’s interesting history, too!

Tripas à Moda do Porto

While this sounds like the name of a resto, it’s Porto’s other local tradition (maybe even more so than the francesinha). It’s a stew made of tripe (hence the name), cooked with some meat and a lot of white beans. The flavor is given by a generous heaping of cumin. Tripas is such a local staple that Thursday is a de facto tripe day, in pretty much the same way as Friday marks the appearance of ginisang monggo in the carinderias back home!

Tripas is best tasted at Restaurante Pombeiro, on Rua Capitão Pombeiro.

Broa de Avintes

Let’s side-track a bit and move on from meat to bread. This famous Porto bread originally came from Avintes, a town near Porto. Dense yet soft, dark, and flavorful, this is what banana bread would have looked like if it did not have sugar! Broa de Avintes is served with various dishes, along with starters (ham and cheese!), and is a nod to tradition since the cooking process takes a full 6 hours.

High quality Broa de Avintes is sold at the Mercearia das Flores, located at Rua das Flores. Try using it for a sandwich, and you’ll see why it’s so famous!

Açorda: Specialty of Portugal

Seafood is a specialty everywhere in Portugal, and every region has its take. In Porto, it’s the Açorda, a stew brought to life by coriander and garlic, and filled with fish and other seafood.

In fact, a nice bowl of Açorda may be your best bet in eating real fresh seafood during your stay. Most tourists really go for the sardines, but the thing is it’s not in season for the most part of the year (and hence is very expensive). But it you head to the north of Porto, to the village called Matosinhos, and find your way to Rua Heróis da Pátria, then you can take your pick of any of the seafood restos here and enjoy to your heart’s content!

Porto Activities: Drink Your Heart Out and More!

Tour douro valley: attractive porto.

One of Porto’s most attractive sections, you can easily spend a whole day here. The valley has a slew of wine-tasting opportunities, from port wine to table wine. The area also produces olive oil. For those into sceneries, you can take a slow cruise along the Douro river on a traditional boat.

Douro Valley is best experienced in a tour setting, where you have a guide to show you the best viewpoints. Among these is the Peso da Régua, which gives an amazing view of the whole city!

Do a Hop-on, Hop-off Tour

Those who’ve been to the US and some Asian countries will be familiar with the Hop-on, Hop-off bus . Porto has its own, and there are two routes that will grant you access to some of Porto’s greatest attractions! Turn the buses into your very own tour bus with a day ticket (or two-day ticket) that takes you from the salt-kissed neighborhoods beside the beach to magnificent sights like the Sé Cathedral.

The buses are open-top, so you can get a panoramic view. It’s also great for people watching as you pass through the Central Baixa area, which is the city’s civic center. As a plus, there are also audio guides that will give you the lowdown on the place you are visiting! It really is like a tour of its own.

Do a Guimarães and Braga Day Tour

These two cities are some of the more interesting places in Portugal, and they are close enough to Porto for a day tour! Guimarães is notable for being the land that birthed Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Of course, there’s a castle and a cathedral to commemorate this important historic fact.

Braga is, similarly, an interesting city with great views, a landmark monastery, and its own twist on Portuguese cuisine!

You can easily reach Guimarães from Porto by leaving through the São Bento station. The trip takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes. From there, you can get to Braga through the Rodonorte (numbers 12, 31, and 2). This trip takes about half an hour.

The best part? All of these activities can be done via tours, through Get Your Guide . They offer top-shelf service and an in-depth look into Porto’s culture! This is also great since you don’t have to worry about catching all the connecting buses and trains.
