Bastrop Early History

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Tonkawa Indians inhabited this area. Comanche Indians hunted along the river each autumn. In 1804, Spanish Governor Manuel Antonio Cordero y Bustamante established a fort at the Colorado River crossing, and this is where the town of Bastrop now stands. The Baron de Bastrop had planned to establish a German community at the site, but it was not until 1827, after Stephen F. Austin obtained a grant for a “Little Colony” from the Mexican government, that settlement began. Pioneers met with intense Indian resistance, but by 1832, the town of Bastrop had been founded. Previously called Mina, the town was renamed for the Baron de Bastrop in 1837.

The fun starts in Bastrop’s historic downtown, where the city’s commitment to historic preservation is on full display. Tidy storefronts painted in colorful hues welcome visitors eager to shop and dine. The National Register of Historic Places admitted 131 Bastrop sites to its listing in 1979, many of which you can see when you stroll through the city center. A great place to begin is the Bastrop County Museum and Visitors Center , which traces the town’s roots as a German colony expanded by Stephen F. Austin. There’s plenty to see and do downtown. Nearly three dozen local retailers create a shopper’s paradise. Discover original art and handmade crafts, eclectic gifts, apparel, home decor and more. Susan will officially join the Board effective Jan. 1, 2024

BASTROP, Texas , June 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Visit Bastrop  President and CEO, Susan Smith , has been elected to Destinations International 's Destination Marketing Accreditation Program  (DMAP) Board of Directors, effective Jan. 1, 2024 . Being elected to the DMAP Board puts Visit Bastrop on the governing board for the destination organization industry's highest organizational achievement.

In 2022, Visit Bastrop was awarded with the DMAP seal of "Accreditation with Distinction," which is the highest possible recognition for a destination organization. The DMAP seal recognized the organizations' commitment to industry excellence and meeting the industry standard for performance and accountability of destination organizations around the world.

President Joe Biden to visit Tampa next week

TALLAHASSEE — President Joe Biden is making a campaign stop in Tampa on Tuesday in his latest visit to the donor-rich Sunshine State.

More details about his visit, including whether he will be making public remarks, are forthcoming, according to a Biden campaign official.

Winning Florida in November seems an uphill battle for the president. Donald Trump has consistently led in the polls, and a Florida Atlantic University poll of registered voters released Thursday had the former president up by eight points .

But the campaign believes it has a pathway to victory in the state based on the GOP’s “toxic political agenda,” including on abortion, according to a campaign memo released this month.

A six-week abortion ban signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to take effect next month, but Florida voters will have a chance to overturn it with a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November.

During a stop in South Florida in January, Biden raised more than $6 million in a single fundraiser hosted by attorney Chris Korge, a longtime Democratic donor.

The president was most recently in Tampa in February last year, when he touted his accomplishments at the University of Tampa and tried to convince seniors that he was the candidate who could reduce health care costs.

In January, First Lady Jill Biden was in Palm Harbor for a campaign fundraiser.

Visit Milwaukee reveals new logo ahead of RNC, other high profile events

More eyes will be on Milwaukee during the next few months than any other time in recent history, which is why Visit Milwaukee is launching a rebrand.

With the current season of Top Chef highlighting different parts of the city and state each week, the Republican National Convention coming in July, and the Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs, Visit Milwaukee revealed its new logo on Tuesday.

“Going into a new rebrand is always a big challenge and a heavy undertaking,” said Josh Albriecht, vice president of marketing and communications. “Especially when you’re doing a new brand that helps to represent and define a city and community that you live and work in.”

Visit Milwaukee, which promotes tourism to the area, has been working on this new logo for two years, talking to stakeholders and doing surveys. The organization wanted to make it official before the big-time events get underway.

“It’s a very high-profile year,” Albriecht said adding that the opening of the expanded Baird Center adds to the excitement. “Definitely 2024 is 100% the year to do this... to really celebrate and capture the momentum that we have right now in the city.”  

Visit President and CEO Peggy Williams-Smith said the organization "should be doing a brand refresh every five years."

"We need to make sure that we're staying up to date and that we're selling Milwaukee as Milwaukee is, not as Milwaukee was," Williams-Smith said. "We know Milwaukee is the economic hub of the state and we need to make sure that we're shouting that from the rooftops."

What's up with the three lines?

The three lines are meant to look like waves and celebrate the city on the water. It also represents the three rivers (Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic) that flow through Milwaukee.

Why three lines?

Each line represents one of the original towns, Juneautown, Kilbourntown and Walker's Point, that eventually formed to make Milwaukee.

The lines look like the letter M?

There's more than the three most visible Ms in the logo. In the negative space and the larger combined logo there are seven Ms representing the Milwaukee 7 region.

I see a heart!

Hidden in the logo is a heart to represent the passion of the people of Milwaukee.

Each line looks different, is that on purpose?

Yes. The top line is meant to represent the Hoan Bridge, the Mitchell Park Domes and the roof at American Family Field.

The more rigid line is meant to represent the city's area code, 414.

And the lines are meant to look like wings to represent the previous logo, the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Old Iron Bridge repairs could reach $11 million

Iconic structure closed, on brink of 'catastrophic failure'.

Bastrop City Manager Lynda Humble steeled the council to what they were about to see: the estimated costs to repair and restore the city’s iconic Old Iron Bridge could reach as high as $11 million.

“What you’re going to see tonight is going to be an epic shock and awe,” Humble said.

Brian LaFoy, project manager for engineering firm Kimley-Horn, unveiled the company's analysis of the historic bridge to the City Council on Tuesday night after several months of evaluating and testing the 96-year-old structure, which was closed last November.

The bridge was closed to all pedestrian traffic after Kimley-Horn discovered significant deterioration of the structure’s key components. The firm later told the council that the bridge was on the brink of “catastrophic failure,” and if the city chose to do nothing about it, it ran the risk of watching the bridge fall into the river.

The city last year had budgeted $2 million to repair the bridge , which would be funded through a $4.7 million bond issuance the city sold last August for capital improvement projects.

But keeping the bridge above water and continuing its legacy as a focal point of the city will come at a much higher cost. So too would its demolition. LaFoy presented the council with four options to address the crumbling structure and the associated costs for each alternative:

• Restoring the bridge’s capacity for pedestrians: up to $10.5 million and an 18-month construction period.

• Turning the bridge into a deck park with possible benches, planters and shading: up to $11 million and a 22-month construction period.

• Demolition of the full bridge: up to $4.75 million and an eight-month demolition period.

• Demolition of the truss spans only: up to $4 million and a 10-month demolition period.

City leaders appeared to lean toward saving the historic structure, which was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

“This is a really significant investment, but I think we can all agree that this bridge is as authentic Bastrop as you can get. It’s on every picture I have seen of Bastrop, it’s in the opening of every video we do, it’s on the Visit Bastrop logo,” Humble said. “(City) staff is taking the approach that tearing this bridge down is not an option. We may ultimately end up there, but it will be with a lot of thoughtful deliberation, fundraisers and all that goes with that.”

Central to the bridge’s deficiency and a big driver behind repair costs are the corroding gusset plates, or the thick steel plates, that fasten together intersecting steel beams and act like cornerstones to the truss bridge. Kimley-Horn’s analysis found that corrosion was much more serious than the city previously thought. Many of the plates were pockmarked with holes where corrosion had eaten all the way through the steel.

Corroded gusset plates have been blamed for other bridge collapses in the past, such as when a truss bridge on an interstate in Minneapolis, Minn. plunged into the Mississippi River in 2007 killing more than a dozen people.

While many of Bastrop's iron bridge’s gusset plates can be salvaged and strengthened, many will have to be replaced, the analysis found.

A second cost intensifier is the high levels of lead found in the paint used to coat the steel, which will require abatement whether the city decides to demolish or repair the bridge. Federal law sets the upper limit of lead particles in paint at 5,000 parts per million, LaFoy said. Of the five samples taken of the bridge's paint, lead levels higher than the federal limit were found in three cases, with the highest concentration at 130,000 parts per million.

The city’s next step is to evaluate its options for funding the bridge's restoration. Humble said these funds could be sourced from multiple areas, including hotel occupancy taxes, bonds and grants. Council Member Bill Peterson suggested that the city setup an online GoFundMe page.

“There’s some capacity in the general fund, but that competes with streets and other infrastructure,” Humble said. “So it will have to be a combination of a number of things.”

The Old Iron Bridge was built in 1923 by the Kansas City Bridge Co. at a cost of $167,000. Originally built and owned by the Texas Department of Transportation, its ownership was transferred to the city in the early 1990′s, after the construction of Loop 150’s modern bridge, which is used for vehicular traffic today.

Spooked circus elephant roams Montana streets before being recaptured

An elephant escaped the confines of a traveling circus and roamed the streets of Butte, Montana, on Tuesday before it was recaptured without incident, NBC Montana reported.

Sheriff Ed Lester of the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department said by email that the elephant was “spooked by a vehicle and escaped briefly.”

Images from Butte showed the animal walking around Harrison Avenue, dwarfing vehicles.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the animal welfare group, identified the elephant as Viola, who has escaped her confines at least twice before, in 2010 and 2014, spokesperson Nicole Perreira said by email. The group described the elephant as "elderly."

NBC Montana reported that Viola escaped from a traveling circus called Jordan World Circus when she was spooked by the sound of a vehicle. Viola was getting a bath at the time, the station said.

Jordan World Circus did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The elephant was walking in the street for a block or two but was then loaded into a trailer by circus staff," Lester said.

The elephant was rounded up by handlers within about 20 minutes of having escaped early Tuesday afternoon, NBC Montana reported. No damage or injuries were reported.

“Glad it ended well," Lester said, "and as far as I know, the show went on as scheduled."

ARTS & CULTURE

We’re a creative bunch here in Bastrop. A thriving community of artists with a rich cultural history, you’ll find a wide variety of arts and culture to peruse on your visit.

Located in the heart of Downtown Bastrop, the Bastrop Opera House has been home to a large number of events throughout its 130-plus-year history. Its first public event in 1889 was a military ball and dinner. Around 1910, it was transformed into a movie theater and stayed that way until World War II ended.

In the 1950s and ’60s, teens were the primary attendees as the building hosted parties, dances and other get-togethers. Finally, in the late 1970s, a nonprofit corporation took possession and began its transformation into the current high-quality venue, which includes dinner theatres, musicals and plays. Even if there aren’t any shows being performed when you visit, come see this amazing, historical building.

The Bastrop County Historical Society was formed in 1952 by 30 women who wanted to “awaken an interest in the early history and legends of Bastrop.” Through the years, the Society has preserved and promoted the history of Bastrop and Bastrop County, and their efforts have resulted in the Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center , located in Downtown Bastrop.

The museum features materials, artifacts and documents that tell the story of Bastrop’s early days, from the time Native Americans inhabited the area more than 200 years ago and Stephen F. Austin’s involvement to the museum’s first exhibit about the Colorado River just a decade ago.

The visitor center’s primary focus is the historic aspects of Bastrop, and docents are available at various times throughout the week to help guide you through the information. With the center’s popularity, however, staff can provide details about the entire city as well as surrounding areas. While you’re there, make sure to ask about the “ Toads in Town ,” the Society of Bridge Spitters and how the Lost Pines Forest got its name. You’ll be glad you did.

Browse (and buy!) the incredible work of some pretty incredible artists at Found Fine Art . This newly opened art gallery is located in the heart of our historic district. They frequently host live demos with artists of various mediums including painters, sculptors, stone carvers, and custom jewelers. 

No trip is complete without picking up some souvenirs to remember us by. Stop by R.A. Green Mercantile , a gallery and shopping center showcasing the work of eight talented local artisans. They have a little bit of everything here, from handmade jewelry to pet products, so you’ll be able to find something for everyone. It’s a great place to find gifts for your loved ones, or to pick up a little something special for yourself!

There’s nowhere that does live music quite like Texas, and Bastrop is proof of that.
