More Vintage Wall Art Ideas to Love

Antique family lineage photo gallery: If you have boxes or albums of old family photos, why not frame them, arranging them in a mini gallery on a hallway or home office wall? This idea is a great way to create a ‘sacred’ space that feels set apart from the rest of your home, while giving you a chance to show off your personal lineage.

Wooden wall hangings: Back in the day, craftsmen and artists used whatever materials were easily accessible to them – wood being among the main ones. Art made completely from woodwork throws a subtle nod to yesteryear.

Chalkboard art: Hanging up a chalkboard (with a piece of chalk) isn’t just a historical aesthetic – it also gives guests and family members an easy way to express themselves with spontaneous sketches or little notes throughout the day!

Distressed iron and bronze: After wood had its moment, the industrial age conquered all. Bronze, iron and other metals, when distressed, straddle the line between urban-vintage and modern-factory feels.

Mail wall baskets: Letter-writing may be a lost art, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do your part to help keep its memory alive!

Clothespin line: Clothespins were the smartphones of the 1800s – without all the megalomania. They possessed a quiet power that enticed people to “show off” their clothes and live in the moment. ‘Unplug’ – and ‘pin up’ your photos and artwork!

Record wall: Remember that box of old records from the eighties you found in the attic last summer? Even if you don’t have a record player, and even if none of them have collected any value over the years (because God knows you checked!), don’t throw them out just yet. Instead, hang them up! Dust them off, pick out three or four or 12 or 16, and arrange them in neat little rows on a wall. The result = impressively rad vintage wall art.

Macramé art: Okay guys, ‘granny-chic’ is in ! But that doesn’t mean you have to go raid Grandma’s closet (and give Grandma a fright) – a simple handmade crochet, macramé, or other woven art piece will bring the vibe just fine!

Shadowboxes: The pinnacle of old-fashioned arts-and-crafts, shadowboxes often held intricate designs within them, delighting children and adults alike. Shop featured shadowboxes here , or make your own using plexiglass panels and miniature decor!

Why Decorate with Wall Art about Travel?

After my first trip to Europe, I was gifted a framed picture of Paris. The travel art wall decor was a photographed city view from the top of the Notre Dame with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The poster-sized photograph was mounted on my living room wall for years – and every time I looked at the framed art, I remembered my first trip to (what has now become) one of my favorite cities in the world.

In fact, the travel art traveled with me from apartment to apartment for 15 years – until we left the United States to become full-time travelers. (Don’t worry though; I gifted it to a good friend who is equally stoked about traveling!).

Pro Tip : Travel art wall décor makes a great gift! Use our tips below for the best travel-inspired wall art present. If you can’t find the perfect travel themed wall art gift here, check out this list of Unique Travel Gifts .

When we travel to a new city, we pore over maps of the layout. In fact, we study city maps so intensely that they become part of our trip memories.

What better way to remember a walking route through than with city map travel framed art? We like the black-and-white maps (like this one of Madrid), but an antique map wall art of a specific city ( like NYC ) is interesting travel inspired wall art, too.

Transportation maps – like the London Tube or New York City subway system – also make cool travel map wall art.

Iconic Landscapes and Natural Wonders World Travel Art

Travel artwork of natural wonders – like the Grand Canyon and Mount Everest – is an excellent addition to a home or office. Travel Quote Wall Art

Travel quotes wall art is a unique reminder of why we love to travel. There are many styles of Travel Quotes wall decor – such as the quote over a travel photo, travel sayings wall art cut outs and adhesive wall art sayings. While Travel Quote Art will certainly look good in any room in your house, there are a few sayings that work well in specific rooms.

For example, the ‘ Eat Well Travel Often ’ Wall Art quote is a great travel wall sign for the kitchen. ‘ Live Love Travel ’ world map wall art is best suited for the bedroom or cozy family room space. For a child’s room, we like the framed wall decor travel quote,‘ Adventure Awaits ’.

And, general travel quotes work well to enhance a travel wall mural – or anywhere in the house where you display travel photos or memorabilia.

Travel Quote Wall Decals

A wanderlust wall sticker is another great way to display travel quotes on your wall. The Road Not Taken wall art (like this one ) would look good in any room in the house. However, the Susan Sontag quote , “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list” is a popular travel wall decal quote, too. We think it is best used on a travel picture wall with your personal photographs of previous trips.

Airplane Art for Walls

For many people, the airplane is the ultimate symbol synonymous with travel. Planes are not only a mode of transportation, but a part of the overall travel experience . Travelers can admire airplanes from their own home with airplane wall art.

There are many styles of airplane canvas wall art – including airplane panel wall art.

One of the most interesting artworks we have seen is an historic TWA airplane wing wall art photo with the NYC skyline in the background. After you purchase the print , you can frame the classic Constellation flight for your wall.

Lockheed Constellation (Connie) - Over New York City 1950 - Vintage Aviation Poster by Clyde Sunderland - Master Art Print (Unframed) 9in x 12in

That said, there are many different styles of airplane travel art for travelers. We love airplane wall art panels that create a horizontal photo, but artistic vintage airplane wall hangings (like this ), over-the-wing window seat photos (like the one here ) and seaplanes at dock (like this beautiful image ) also inspire travelers.

Country and Continent Wall Art for Travelers

If your travels are focused on a specific country or continent, you can decorate the walls of your home with a variety of Travel the World art work from those specific places.

Americana Wall Art Travel Themed Home Decor

There is a vast range of American wall art to commemorate travels throughout the United States. One of the top rated items is an American Flag Wall Art (Wood) that you can see in more detail here . Other popular travel-themed US artwork for the home are Route 66 signs (like this one ), retro diner posters and unique USA maps (like this embroidered US map on canvas).

National Park Travel Inspired Art

US National Park retro travel wall art prints are popular, too – like this one for the Grand Canyon . The retro national park travel wall poster features a throwback design and can be ordered in several different sizes – with or without a frame.

Continent and Regional Wall Art

In our travels abroad and in our own searches for home décor we have come across fabulous art that features or represents an entire continent or region.

For example, we love this colorful Africa Map Wall Art painting on canvas and a picturesque European street scene . Asian-Inspired Wall Art can also be quite captivating – and is featured in frames, on tapestries and on Asian wall art panels. Asian-themed wall art can be bold or subdued, serene or chaotic. We particularly like this Monk and Elephant Asian inspired wall art.

Creative Wall Art: Travel-Themed

Travel-themed wall decor does not have to be related to a specific destination…it can just be about travel!

A compass wall hanging – either a 3D metal compass work of art or an abstract canvas featuring a compass – is travel-themed home decor that can inspire future travels. A script sign bearing the word ‘Travel’ hanging on the wall is a reminder of journeys taken.

These simple symbols are excellent travel wall ideas that can easily be combined with other wanderlust home decor.

DIY Travel Wall Art

Some of the best travel wall decor ideas are the ones you come up with yourself! Travelers can create an arts and crafts style wall art display using personal momentous – like ticket stubs, airline tickets and photos.

If you are going to use your own photographs, make sure you use a good camera for your travels (we like the DSLR Canon Rebel ; it takes phenomenal photos, is easy to use and comes with a bundle of fun accessories!).

Another way to create fun travel photo wall art is to use professional snapshots and either retro or vintage postcards from places around the world.

Maps are, without a doubt, one of the most loved travel decor wall art. There are numerous styles of Map Travel Themed Wall Decor – from artistic renditions to vintage old world maps to personalized maps to track travels .

Stylish and Affordable Home Decor with Vintage Travel Poster Art (by Ren Brabenec) November 12, 2019

Stylish and Affordable Home Decor with Vintage Travel Poster Art (by Ren Brabenec)

“Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in.” -Amy Lowell

We often find it tricky to nail down our feelings and emotions about vintage travel poster art. But that quote by Amy Lowell is a good start. Anderson Design Group was created to foster a collective of artists dedicated to preserving the traditions of vintage travel poster art. Joel Anderson spearheaded the mission, starting the design firm in his attic with a business partner in 1993. Since then, our group has grown to include several artists from different backgrounds. But there’s one thing that we all have in common, and that’s our love for vintage art.

The Different Types of Vintage Art

It’s not always easy to define vintage art. A broad definition could mean any artwork made in a style that was popular long ago. Other definitions refer to commercial artwork created between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. When referencing vintage art styles, some would point to Art Deco, Mod Art, Works Progress Administration (WPA) art, mid 20th-century magazine covers, early-1900s travel posters and advertisements, pulp fiction illustrations, etc.

wall decor vintage travel art

The Anderson Design Group National Parks Collection is a good representation of what vintage artwork looks like. These vintage National Park posters were handcrafted with inspiration drawn from the WPA-commissioned artwork of the early-1900s. That era was aptly titled the Golden Age of Illustration . In our National Parks collection, we created unique, retro travel posters of each National Park. From the forested valleys and the steep, rocky slopes of Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the verdant marshlands of Everglades National Park, this collection is replete with handcrafted, retro travel posters of each of the 61 American National Parks.

wall decor vintage travel art

Every illustration was envisioned, drawn, lettered, and colored by our award-winning artists here at Anderson Design Group. And because we believe that the magic of art comes from the inspiration behind the artwork, we often travel to the National Parks themselves, all so we can see and experience the incredible natural wonders that each park has to offer.

wall decor vintage travel art

From our National Park art to our World Travel , American Travel, and American State Pride artwork, all through the rest of our unique vintage poster collections, our artwork combines the magic and wonder of century-old art styles with modern printing technology. And what’s more, art enthusiasts can decorate their homes in vintage artwork at an affordable price point.

wall decor vintage travel art

To buy a vintage travel poster made in the early-1900s, one will likely have to spend several hundred, sometimes thousands of dollars. Vintage wall art that is still in good condition is quite scarce, hence the high price. However, Anderson Design Group is bringing the magic, the nostalgia, and the pure romance of vintage art into peoples’ homes at an affordable price point.

Decorating with vintage poster art usually means purchasing several posters, perhaps a few retro, metal signs, and possibly a large canvas banner to serve as a room’s centerpiece. A framed, vintage postcard looks excellent on any mantle or desk, and a refined vintage-looking canvas can be a great addition to an office or study. All of our artwork comes in at reasonable price points. That allows families to afford several vintage art pieces easily, rather than breaking the bank on one, genuine, original vintage piece.

Our art prints can be grabbed up for as low as $16.99 a pop, and our canvas banners are a steal at $49.99. Our rugged metal signs start at $39.99, and you can order a set of notecards or postcards of your choice for about $15.00. This is vintage wall art, affordable for the first time!

Retro Art is Perfect for Home Decor, Office Glam, and Holiday Gifts!

Retro wall art and vintage posters: this type of art style is unlike any other, and it speaks to us loud and clear. Perhaps what we like most about our Anderson Design Group posters is how these hand-rendered illustrations seem to fit in with so many interior design styles. We’ve had customers send us pictures of our National Park posters in houses, cabins, office buildings, modern-style homes, lake houses, farmhouses, apartment buildings, guest rooms, vacation rentals, camper trailers, and even tree houses!

wall decor vintage travel art

Retro art is often synonymous with travel art, as the modernization of rail, automobile, and air travel in the mid-1900s (as well as the installation of the interstate system), made traveling across America more feasible. All of a sudden, towns and cities were flooded with travel posters and advertisements.

Americans took to the roads, eager to explore all that the U.S. (and even the world) had to offer. At Anderson Design Group, our World Travel and American Travel collections embody the artwork of that period; when civilization shifted and Americans could travel with relative ease. If you have an avid traveler or wanderlust-filled friend or family member in your life, our retro artwork makes the perfect gift this holiday season. What Vintage Artwork Means to Us

As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post, our team often finds it difficult to put our collective finger on precisely what vintage artwork means to us. I guess it’s a combination of a few things. Vintage artwork brings out nostalgia and a sort of warm, fuzzy feeling. Retro art reminds us of the artistic side of human nature and how humankind has been making art for centuries. This art style reminds us of how art was done before the advent of cameras and computers.

Vintage artwork has a special significance for us. We feel it is essential to protect and preserve the art styles of our ancestors. Technology has enabled us to reproduce our artwork on incredible, gallery-grade papers, canvases, and other mediums. But we don’t want to get so swept up in technology that we lose sight of the Golden Age of Illustration, so we still make all of our original artwork by hand.

wall decor vintage travel art

Our art team lives and works through vintage art, every day, here at the studio. But I guess you could also say that vintage artwork lives and works through us too, as we’ll always endeavor to preserve it for generations to come.

What do you see when you look at vintage artwork?

Until next time,

-Ren Brabenec Anderson Design Group Writing Staff

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

wall decor vintage travel art

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

wall decor vintage travel art

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

wall decor vintage travel art

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

wall decor vintage travel art

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

wall decor vintage travel art

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
