The Burger King Whopper song is a bop — we asked experts why

WHOPPER, WHOPPER, WHOPPER, WHOPPER

The Burger King Whopper song is a viral phenomenon: driving a wave of memes and TikTok parodies while also exasperating NFL fans. We spoke with music production, advertising, and meme experts to understand why it has such a hold on everyone.

Its lyrics, like poetry: WHOPPER, WHOPPER, WHOPPER, WHOPPER, JUNIOR, DOUBLE, TRIPLE WHOPPER

Art. Pure art.

The Burger King Whopper song is a viral and inescapable phenomenon, driving memes and TikTok parodies while exasperating NFL fans across the country. You’ve probably heard it on your TV, web browser, or TikTok For You Page. And now you’re hearing it again, and again in your head.

We spoke with music production, advertising, and meme experts to understand why it has such a hold on listeners.

Where did the Whopper song come from?

According to OKRP — the Chicago-based advertising agency that’s responsible for the song and the ad campaign — the tune is based on a 1970s Burger King jingle .

OKRP announced its partnership with Burger King in April. Articles announcing the relationship said OKRP was hired to help reintroduce Burger King to audiences through new campaigns and messaging.

The new “You Rule” ad series began airing in October. There are at least seven versions promoting the Whopper as well as a chicken sandwich version with the same melody. The lyrics for that one go, “CHICKEN, CHICKEN, CHICKEN, CHICKEN.” Two versions ( Whopper Whopper and Burger Cheese Burger Cheese ) are available on Burger King’s new Spotify account.

The jingles were developed by Beacon Street productions out of Venice California, according to Burger King’s marketing department. But the singer remains a mystery.

“While we can’t reveal the name of the artist behind the ‘Whopper, Whopper’ jingle, we’re excited to continue working with Beacon Street and OKRP to develop more catchy tunes you can’t get out of your head,” Burger King vice president of marketing Zahra Nurani said.

Jennifer Lovrinic Freeman, who teaches advertising research strategy at Temple University , said when it comes to ads, especially on social media, the power of a catchy jingle can’t be denied.

“In fact, many research studies have shown that music in advertising does increase consumer attention and interest,” she said. “This is especially true when people are multi-tasking with multiple devices, which is nearly always the case when people are watching TV or online shows.”

Freeman said when it comes to the Whopper ads, repetition of the word “Whopper,” plus folding in the well-known BK slogan, “have it your way,” make for great tools for consumers to remember the song — “whether we like it or not.”

The NFL meme-ification of the Whopper ad

Quickly, the ads — which have frequently aired during NFL games — caught on and were mocked across the internet.

The internet also ridiculed how serious news broadcasts could abruptly jump to “WHOPPER, WHOPPER...” abruptly.

Infamously, when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field last month, many viewers tweeted about a cut to the ill-timed Whopper ad. Broadcast stations aren’t typically able to control when viewers see ads.

“TikTok after TikTok was posted that day of people recording their TV screens as the coverage jumped between his [Hamlin’s] cardiac arrest and the Whopper commercial,” Know Your Meme associate editor Owen Carry told The Inquirer. “After that moment is when the meme really took off. It was like the catalyst for its perceived annoyance and tragic, comedic timing.”

Still, the “You Rule” songs have become known among football fans because of their undeniable catchiness and sheer frequency.

TikTok user @dak4mvp88 joked they’d viewed the ad “10 times an hour.” A TikTok by user @_steezy_7 played the song with the caption: “POV [Point of view]: Your NFL team is getting absolutely demolished and this Commercial plays for the 30th time.”

According to Carry at Know Your Meme, the ad’s staying power has to do with “the song being a perfectly designed jingle, it seemingly playing during every commercial break of the NFL season.”

Burger King itself has leaned into the joke. Last month, the brand account tweeted about the lyrics getting stuck in viewers’ heads.

Musically, the Whopper song has ‘a dash of absurdity’

On TikTok, the song has been made into its own shareable audio clip , with some users remixing the song in different ways.

One remix took the Royal Chicken jingle and remixed it to slow down or speed up each time the lyrics say “chicken.” It’s part of a popular meme that takes sounds and mocks repetitive words “to a nauseating degree,” according to Carry.

Others have taken it a step further, creating mashups of the Whopper tune with popular songs including Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody , aptly titled “ Bohemian Whoppsody .”

@thereiruinedit Replying to @fleur_sauvage444 It’s never too late to un-follow. @queenofficial #bohemianrhapsody #mashup #whopper #whopperwhopperwhopperwhopper @burgerking ♬ Bohemian Whoppsody - There I Ruined It

Michael Johnson, a Philly-based music producer and University of the Arts associate professor, said that for a song to become an “earworm” — a catchy song that can’t escape your mind — it needs “simplicity, repetition and in the case of jingles, a dash of absurdity.”

Examples include Subway’s “ Five Dollar Foot Long ,” Chili’s “ Baby Back Ribs ,” and, a personal favorite of Johnson’s, Where’d the Cheese Go by Ween, a rejected Pizza Hut jingle .

Johnson said the song has a relatable, lower production feel because of its simple lyrics and the singer’s seemingly minimally edited tone.

“Everybody knows a jolly gentle giant of a man like the vocalist in this song,” Johnson told The Inquirer. “Can’t quite sing, but always goes hard.”

As the Super Bowl approaches, can we expect more Whopper ads?

The short answer is “probably.”

Neither Burger King nor OKRP have publicized plans surrounding the Super Bowl .

But even without confirmation, speculation about a fire new BK jingle is rampant on Twitter.

“It will definitely be interesting to see if and how BK uses this meme attention for its chosen Super Bowl ad,” Carry said. “The campaign is arguably the most hated by NFL fans since the 2008 ‘ Saved by Zero ’ Toyota campaign, at least digging through lots of discourse about it.”

In short: you’re going to be hearing this tune for a while. Because even when it stops, it stays in your head.

The Burger King Whopper commercial song & lyrics

whopper trips lyrics

It’s hard to explain why things get viral sometimes. The Burger King Whopper commercial released in November 2022 has received a crazy mix of feedbacks from the Internet: someone loves it, and someone hates it. But surely, everybody remembers the song, singing “whopper whopper whopper” with an amatorial voice, like a kid happy to be eating at the fast food. There is no doubt that all this was the explicit intention of who created the commercial, but here it is: let’s explore the song and the lyrics of the famous new Burger King Whopper commercial.

You can watch the commercial released in 2022 here on Youtube .

“Whopper whopper whopper”: the viral song in the Burger King commercial

The song featured in the Burger King Whopper commercial released in 2022 is a jingle written on purpose for the commercial . It has no title, it’s not an independent song, and Burger King probably won’t release it out of the commercial (although many people are invoking its presence on Spotify).

The song has anyway become viral, and it’s stuck in everybody’s head during the 2022 holiday season. People often look for its lyrics so that they can sing it anytime. You can find them below:

Whopper whopper whopper whopper Junior double triple whopper Flame-grilled taste with perfect toppers I rule this day

Lettice mayo pickle ketchup It’s ok if I don’t want that Impossible bow wow bacon whopper Any whopper my way

You rule, you’re seizin’ the day At BK have it your way

Of course, there is the parallel commercial for the Royal Crispy Chicken: the song is the same, but the singer repeats the words “chicken chicken chicken,” obviously. You can find it here .

Now you are prepared: next time somebody comments on this commercial saying how much they loved or hated the song, you can answer with the line you prefer. You are welcome.

Burger King’s inescapable ‘Whopper’ jingle has become a viral phenomenon

A Whooper on a color background with musical notes playing behind the Whooper

With the new year comes a new glut of internet memes, and one has emerged from an unlikely place: the commercial breaks during this season’s NFL games.

A recent set of ads for Burger King contain a jingle that has become a certified earworm, according to social media. The commercials, which feature a singer crooning a staccato tune about the chain’s signature burger, has left the confines of basic advertising and entired the realm of virality.

“Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Junior, Double, Triple Whopper,” sings a man in the 15-second commercial, as the typical mouthwatering close-ups of a juicy burger flash by the screen and happy customers take bites. “Impossible or Bacon Whopper, I rule this day.”

The song is actually titled “You Rule” and is a cover-of-sorts of Burger King’s original 1970s-era jingle “Have it Your Way. " The song, which first premiered in October 2022, has been slowly but surely jamming its way into the amygdalas of the American public.

According to people on social media, the shortened version of the song can be frequently heard during the commercial breaks of NFL games this season.

“Before we all sit down to watch some football, I have an important message to which all football fans can relate,” tweeted one person. “Whopper, Whopper, Junior Whopper.”

“Me: watching some playoff football,” wrote another Twitter user. “My brain: WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER JUNIOR DOUBLE TRIPLE WHOPPER.”

"You be stressed as hell watching your NFL team then all you hear is / Whopper / Whopper / Whopper / Whopper / Whopper / Whopper," tweeted someone else.

“Whopper whopper whopper whopper,” a Twitter user replied to the question posed by NFL on ESPN’s official account , “What do you think Josh Allen said to Joe Burrow here?”

In a tweet , writer Danny Heifetz imagined a world in which Rihanna's long-awaited return to the mic resulted in her singing the burger-based bop:

*Rihanna descends from the sky* *lands on Super Bowl halftime stage* *grabs mic, looks into the camera* “whopper whopper whopper whopper” @Danny_Heifetz on Twitter

Over on TikTok, some folks are mashing up the jingle with other certified earworms, particularly pop and electronic music hits.

“Hate this burger king ad,” reads the caption on @diamondbrickz’s video, though their fire-grilled composition insinuates otherwise. The TikToker calls their "Whopper" jingle mashup “Harder Better Faster Whopper” after the original 2001 Daft Punk hit they paired the tune with.

Another TikToker, @neelsamba, paired Dua Lipa’s hit “Levitating" with the jingle, taking it to danceable heights.

“Imagine a Burger King Wedding Entrance,” reads the on-screen text on a video by TikTok user @naluthepianoman, who asks viewers to be seated before he plays the familiar opening notes of the jingle on his piano.

But not everyone is not having as much fun with the song’s viral success as Burger King must be. Actor Sam Richardson, who is well-known for playing Richard Splett in “Veep” and more recently taking on roles in “The Afterparty” and "Ted Lasso,” has quite a strong, distinctive voice — similar to that of the man singing in the ad. Because of this, the “Detroiters” star has been fielding many , many , many , many questions asking if he’s the voice of “Whopper, Whopper,” which he confirmed he is not.

“That is not me singing that Burger King commercial,” Richardson tweeted , setting the record straight. “Thank you.”

That didn’t stop the official Burger King Twitter account from shooting its shot with the actor, implying that it would be open to working with him in a more official capacity.

“.@SamRichardson re-record our commercial challenge,” Burger King replied to Richardson's tweet.

Richardson hasn’t yet responded, but there are only a couple of weeks until the Super Bowl. Stranger things have happened.

Who Sings The Burger King Commercial Song 'Whopper Whopper'?

Man biting into Whopper

Anyone who's been watching the 2023 NFL playoffs has likely heard the newest earworm to enter the zeitgeist. It technically dropped in November 2022, but the jingle from Burger King's new commercials has stuck around and become a viral meme. The song in question, appropriately titled "Whopper Whopper," starts with a man singing "Whopper" ad nauseam before diving into other attractive features of the fast food chain's burgers, like all the toppings you can expect.

Burger King seized the opportunity by releasing the track on Spotify in February 2023, and as of this writing, the track has racked up over 7 million listens. The song is a hit, which makes it all the stranger many people probably don't know who sings it. Fortunately, The Roz and Mocha Show on Kiss 92.5 tracked down the singer, who happens to be Crown from the hip-hop group Crown and the M.O.B.

The interview was uploaded to TikTok , where Crown revealed his involvement with the ad was completely fortuitous, "I just happened to be around the studio, and we were just having fun. They happened to be working on the Burger King spot already. And when I walked in, they say, 'Hey, you know what, give it a try.'" And the rest is commercial history.

Crown has done a lot of work with Burger King

Burger King has been having a very viral 2023. Earlier in the year, the fast food chain released a special Barbie burger that was pink, making legions of consumers assume it was dipped in Pepto Bismol. Now, Burger King has a memeable jingle, which is only fair, seeing how McDonald's had its own meme in 2023 when people made strange videos surrounding the Grimace shake . And now that the answer to who sings the Burger King commercial jingle has been revealed, the only question is what's next for the singer.

As Crown's interview with Kiss 92.5 continues, he reveals how people may hear his voice as part of the Burger King brand for a while. Crown mentions, "Currently, I have been doing a lot of [Burger King's] jingles, so a lot of the voices you hear is me." The absurdity of the song has only grown in recent months. As a promotional spot for the 2023 VMAs released on YouTube , Steve Aoki remixed the "Whopper Whopper" song. It may have gotten a beat more suitable for the club, but Crown's voice can still be heard throughout.

And Crown's making music for more than just restaurants. On his Instagram , he posted how one of his new tracks, "Foster Kid," was featured on an episode of "The Chi." Crown is keeping busy these days, and his collaboration with Burger King may end up being one of the more noteworthy aspects of his discography.
