West Coast Wilderness Railway

Heritage Train Journey

Tasmania’s West Coast Wilderness Railway is a unique railway journey through the ancient rainforest that relates the history and heritage of the region and 120-year-old railway. Disembark at remote wilderness stations and engage in a diverse array of things to do, such as honey tasting or panning for gold, or just drink in the rainforest on one of the short walks. When booking your rail journey, you are offered a choice of two comfortable carriage types. Heritage Carriages provide upholstered seating and snacks available for purchase along the way, whilst Wilderness Carriages offer fully inclusive catering and a welcoming glass of Tasmanian sparkling wine onboarding and access to the carriage balcony. As you pass breath-taking scenery, only accessible by the heritage railway, you are invited to breathe and soak in the ancient rainforest. Onboard guides provide live commentary and will share fascinating stories of the hardships of the railway’s construction and the men, women, and children that called the surrounding wilderness their home. Please note: West Coast Wilderness Railway will close temporarily for maintenance from 5 June, resuming service in time for the 23/24 peak season. Further details on timetables etc can be found at www.wcwr.com.au.

Guide to Tasmania's wild west coast

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to Tasmania’s wild west coast
  • When to visit

White-water raft untamed rivers, sail beautiful harbours and hike through age-old rainforest on Tasmania’s wild west coast.

Home to untamed rivers, ancient pine trees and giant sand dunes, the west coast is at the heart of Tasmania's wilderness. Challenge the infamous Franklin River on a white-water rafting expedition, cruise down the majestic Gordon River and hike past 1,000-year-old Huon pines in one of the world's last temperate rainforests for a true taste of this rugged corner of Australia.

The best way to get to Tasmania’s wild west coast is to fly into either Launceston Airport (LST) or Hobart Airport (HOB) and drive to Strahan, known as ‘the gateway to the west coast’.

  • Launceston Airport is 275km (171mi) from Strahan
  • Hobart Airport is 302km (188mi) from Strahan
  • Car hire options are available from both

Tassielink can connect you from Burnie to Strahan with scenic stops in between, giving you a chance to soak in the wild west’s scenic views on your journey.

Get around Tasmania’s west coast by car, bike or public transport or join a tour to experience the best of the region.

Due to the cooler climate, the best time to visit Tasmania’s west coast is during the summer and spring time where the weather is a little warmer than other months.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)

When the ABT Railway (now the West Coast Wilderness Railway ) was built in Tasmania, it was considered one of the engineering marvels of Australia.

The West Coast pioneers who built the original railway in 1896 accomplished a great feat of labour. For many miles along the King River the railway line was hewn with pick and shovel out of the steep side of the gorge. Forty two bridges were built over the 22-mile long stretch of wilderness; for the ‘quarter mile’ bridge below the gorge, pylons had to be driven 60 feet into the silt with men constantly up to their waists in the cold water.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway forms a gateway for visitors to explore Tasmania’s unique rail heritage, discovering the inspiring story of the pioneers who built the railway more than 100 years ago.

Take a trip back in time to where men laboured through mud, rain and treacherous landscapes to forge a railway link between the mining town of Queenstown and the port of Strahan. Authentically recreated with its many timber trestle bridges and the unique Abt rack and pinion system for the steep grades, the West Coast Wilderness Railway crosses the wild King River and climbs through sheer sided rainforested gorges.

Along the 35km journey you will stop at stations of the past – Lower Landing, Dubbil Barril, Rinadeena – where your trained guides will bring to life the stories of these historic points on the railway.

Tasmania’s West Coast Wilderness Railway is a steam railway like no other and an essential experience for any visitor to the region. It operates full and half-day steam train journeys along a historic 35km track between Queenstown and Strahan on Tasmania's wild West Coast.

Its tours are also journeys into the history of the region and the ingenuity behind the Railway’s construction, which required solutions to huge environmental and logistical challenges, and has been recognised as an engineering achievement of global significance.

Built in the 1890s to carry minerals from the mines at Queenstown to the port at Strahan, the railway passes through dense rainforests that are home to the Huon pine and steep gorges, offering unforgettable views of Tasmania's wilderness from the comfort of a cosy carriage.

Passengers are told the fascinating stories of the hardships of the railway’s construction and the fierce competition with the operators of the other mines and railways in the area. The train stops at stations along the route which offer activities including a rainforest walk, viewing the train being turned on a manual turntable, panning for gold, tastings of wild honey and stunning photo opportunities.
