The 1996 Jetta Trek Limited Edition Sedan started under $16,000 and came with either a five speed manual or four speed automatic. The VW Trek bike came with 21 speeds and custom seat, handgrips, and special graphics: a dude on a multi-colored rocket, orbiting the VW logo, and holding…something?

Details on the bikes are a bit harder to find. The 1996 ones had a steel frame, but this one has an aluminum frame, which may be the 1997 version. The OCLV on the rocket stands for Trek’s patented carbon fiber, but it’s unlikely that there’s any of it on this bike. A few parts had been replaced in the past twenty years, including the saddle (which also would have had that rocket boy logo), but it still has the original VW hand grips.

It’s definitely in better shape than some of the Trek Edition automobiles out there: Junkyard Gem .

Update: It’s 2022, and someone is selling a never-used VW Trek bike and branded gear in NJ.

Bike Specs for Limited Edition Jetta Trek Mountain Bike

In the late 1990s the Volkswagen car company partnered with the Trek bicycle company to offer a car-bicycle combo. The Limited Edition Jetta Trek, complete with a mountain bike, was only offered for a few years, but the bikes and the cars are still out there. If you're thinking of buying a Jetta Trek mountain bike, you can expect it to be a bike with middle-of-the-road quality.

Frame Differences

The Jetta edition Trek mountain bike looks much like the frame you'll find on a late '90s 850 model Trek bike. The Trek frames were an aluminum alloy frame, with a fork made from double-welded chromoly. That type of fork made it slightly lighter. The bike doesn't come with rear or front suspension, so the forks are also made from chromoly steel. The frames came in five sizes.

The Jetta Trek's brakes were made by the Shimano company. They're the Altus-style brakes in the cantilever style, meaning the two sides of the brake are attached to their own pivot point. This is a common style of brake for thick tires, as mountain bikes typically have.

Shifting and Drivetrain

The bike's shifters were SRAM grip shift ESP 500 models and are the roll type, meaning you'd be able to roll the shifter on the handlebars either forward or backward with a flip of the wrist. The bike has 21 gears. Trek's 800 series models had Shimano-brand sealed mechanism rear hubsets and aluminum-sealed front hubsets.

Other Features

Since the bike hasn't been made in a long time, the tires may have long been replaced on any bikes you find for sale. The originals, however, were Big Kahuna brand tires that were 26 inches wide and 2.1 inches thick. The bikes were purple in color and had a VW logo on the hand grips as well as on the seat.

Junkyard Find: 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Trek Edition

Back in the 1990s, Volkswagen and Trek Bicycles got together for a co-branding deal that shook the world (if you define “the world” as “a couple of zip codes in Marin County “): Golfs and Jettas with sporty-looking upholstery, roof racks, and matching Trek bikes! 15 years later, all but the most fanatical VW and/or bicycle zealots have forgotten the Trek Limited Edition VWs, which makes this an especially rare Junkyard Find.

The snazzy wheels and bike rack are long gone from this example, found in a Denver self-serve yard last week, but it’s still an even rarer find than a genuine Etienne Aigner Golf .

Rather than the scenes depicting drunk 350-pound dudes blasting seagulls with shotguns in the liquor-store parking lot that one will find embroidered into the upholstery of the super-rare Bakersfield Sportsman Edition Ford F-150 from the same era, the Trek Edition Jetta’s seats feature healthy stick-figure VW drivers doing healthy aerobic activities. There’s basketball, running, and— of course— bike riding.

The upholstery in this car smells worse than the Spandex undies of the winner of the Death Ride , but a good cleaning might render it suitable for use in a Trek Jetta restoration.

• Amy I owned this exact car from 16 until 19 (1990 to 1993) I miss this car immensely and am on the search to own it again, although it looks like my search may be in vane. It was affectionatly dubbed, " The Dragon Wagon," and hauled many a teenager around the city of Charlotte, NC. For me, it was dependable and trustworthy. I was able to do much of the maintenance myself until I was struck by lightning and a month later the battery exploded. My parents did have the entire electrical system redone and he was back to new. I hope to find one in the near future and make it my every day driver. I'm a dreamer.
• Jeff Overall I prefer the 59 GM cars to the 58s because of less chrome but I have a new appreciation of the 58 Cadillac Eldorados after reading this series. I use to not like the 58 Eldorados but I now don't mind them. Overall I prefer the 55-57s GMs over most of the 58-60s GMs. For the most part I like the 61 GMs. Chryslers I like the 57 and 58s. Fords I liked the 55 thru 57s but the 58s and 59s not as much with the exception of Mercury which I for the most part like all those. As the 60s progressed the tail fins started to go away and the amount of chrome was reduced. More understated.

Trek Bicycle confirmed reports of the demise of its Trek / VW Factory Mountain Bike Team with an announcement that the company had ended its 13-year partnership with Volkswagen of America effective with the close of the 2008 calendar year. The collaboration was one of the longest running and most successful in mountain biking and cycling in general. For mountain bike racers, the team's cessation marks the end of an era in which the predominantly red, black and white colors of Trek / VW were seen nearly every weekend at local, regional and national off-road races in the US.

"This has been a great alliance since its inception in 1995," Trek's Director of Marketing Dean Gore said. "Volkswagen has been a great partner not only to Trek, but also to the sport of mountain biking and cycling in general. Staying with one program for over 13 years is relatively unheard of in the fast-paced world of auto marketing. And even though they have decided not to continue with Trek in 2009, we still feel indebted to VW for their loyalty and support over the years. Volkswagen vehicles took us to a lot of races over the years and allowed Trek athletes to chase a lot of dreams."

Former US national short track champion Sue Haywood, current US marathon and short track national champion Jeremiah Bishop, current US National 24 hour solo champion Chris Eatough, National Ultra-Endurance (NUE) series champions Jeff Schalk and Cheryl Sornson, Ross Schnell and Lea Davison are just some of the many names of riders who grew their careers with the Trek / VW regional and national level mountain bike squads.

What started with the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Trek, a limited-edition Jetta outfitted with a roof rack and special-edition Trek mountain bike, and a four-man professional mountain bike team, grew into a fulll strength men's and women's professional and amateur team that racked up a total of 10 World Championships in cross country, dual slalom, all mountain, and 24-hour solo events.

In addition to the teams, the partnership also backed the Ride the Best Demo Tour and the Fit For Women Tour, two programs which offered bicycle test rides at cycling and automotive events throughout the US. Trek will continue to operate both programs without Volkswagen. It will also continue sponsorship of a racing team, one with an emphasis on World Cup and other international mountain bike events. The names on the new World Cup team's roster differ from the now-defunct factory team.

Tracy Moseley and Liam Killeen of Great Britain, Justin Leov of New Zealand, Andrew Neethling of South Africa and Swiss brothers Lukas Flueckiger and Matthias Flueckiger will comprise the new World Cup team. Eatough previously told Cyclingnews that he has one year left on his contract and will be racing for Trek in 2009.

It is for that reason that I chose to post this example that has been hiding out in the Pacific Northwest for who knows how long. I’ve thought about posting Jetta Treks in the past, but they’ve been too far gone for anyone to waste their time on. Not this one, no, this is probably the cleanest Jetta Trek in the country. Just 69,957 miles on the clock, the Flash Red paint devoid of rust, the black/multi color interior clean as you could hope for. This is a Jetta that has seen a mere fraction of what is possible for the 2.0L I4, a power plant that cranked out a whopping 114 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque. Somebody should scoop this thing up, put a proper Thule rack on it, and scour the internet for one of the special edition Trek bicycles. With this car priced at $3,495, and the bikes trading for roughly $150, you’re looking at around $4k all in for a 1990s time capsule. If you’re interested in a project like this, it’s safe to assume you already have a box of cassette tapes ranging from Spin Doctors to bootleg Phish shows, so you don’t have to go out of pocket to complete the vibe. Hopefully you do have some money set aside for a manual swap though because the 4spd automatics in these cars are just awful.

Pretty sure that’s Memory Red Metallic. Flash Red was very similar to Tornado Red. I had a Tornado Red ’98 K2; still had the factory racks but no board when I got it. I loved the K2 because it was effectively a 4-door GTi with heated seats, fog lights and white gauges. It was a fantastic car, even if it did occasionally have electrical gremlins. The heat in that car could melt your face off – seriously.

Volkswagen's sedan version of the Golf, the Jetta, has always been one of our favorite sedans. Like most cars conceived in Germany, the Jetta has an uncanny ability to keep the driver in touch with every undulation and irregularity in the road without sacrificing comfort. It has a cavernous interior, logically laid-out controls and displays, and zippy performance.

GL, GLS, Trek, and Wolfsburg Edition Jettas offer enough oomph to keep most drivers satisfied, when equipped with a five-speed transmission. The optional automatic saps what little power the Jetta has to offer, and we don't recommend it. Most drivers who want a Jetta will be of the persuasion that eschews the autobox in favor of rowing their own gears anyway because, let's face it, why buy a VW if you don't enjoy driving?

Driving enjoyment is what the top-of-the-line GLX is all about. Sporting a powerful and compact V6 engine, thick alloy wheels, and newly lowered sport suspension, the GLX is a poor man's BMW 325i. If you have a need for speed, this is the Jetta to buy.

This year, Jettas get a sharp new grille, smoother automatic transmission, and a new Bose stereo system is available. Three new colors are available for 1996. A Turbo Direct Injection (TDI) arrived in showrooms mid-year. Volkswagen claims this car will change the way you think of diesels, touting how quick, quiet and clean it is. We don't think Americans will be interested.

Regular Jettas are a blast once they're moving. Sharp steering response, a taut chassis, and a superb driving position combine to make you forget about the wimpy 2.0-liter, 115-horsepower engine under the hood.

Reliability has been a problem with Volkswagens in the past. However, a new 10 year/100,000 mile warranty backs up the powertrain, and free roadside assistance is provided for the first two years of ownership.

Not that you couldn't afford to fix it once in a while. The uplevel GLS, loaded with antilock brakes, sunroof, CD changer, and a fun-robbing automatic transmission, doesn't crack the $20,000 barrier. Prices like these make the Jetta very competitive with the Chrysler Cirrus, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. The GLX undercuts premium German sedans by thousands of dollars, without sacrificing performance, features or that Teutonic feel. Sign us up.

Junkyard Gem: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta Trek Edition

The vw that came with a trek bicycle and a roof rack, now found in a denver junkyard without the bike..

Volkswagen began the 1990s with designer-edition cars , then had a fling (in Europe) with Golfs co-branded with Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, and Bon Jovi . Later in the decade, it appears that focus-group research led Volkswagen of America to believe that Golf and Jetta buyers tended to enjoy sporty outdoor activities, which led to cars being sold here with matching skis or bicycles. We'll follow up the discarded K2 Edition Golf we saw recently with this Trek Edition Jetta in Colorado.

Trek is a Wisconsin-based bicycle company that became extremely popular among American mountain bikers during the 1990s, and so VWoA made a good move by creating the Trek Edition Jetta and Golf for the 1996 and 1997 model years. Buyers got a pretty decent Trek mountain bike to match the car, plus a roof rack to haul it to the nearest riding locale (here in Denver, you're likely to find Lemons racers riding pink Barbie Edition Huffys in such locales).

The '96 Trek Jetta got very busy seat fabric depecting basketball players and dancers , but the '97s received these more dignified Trek-monogrammed seats.

While the Trek bike had a 21-speed clutchless manual transmission (technically speaking, it's a seven-speed with a dual-ratio overdrive), the derailleur-based gear-change system turned out to be ill-suited for car use. In 1997, American Jetta buyers could choose between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. This car has the five-on-the-floor (sadly, no five-on-the-tree was available).

The bicycle and its roof racks are long gone, of course, though the original owner's manuals will remain with the car to the very end .

Here's an innovative field-expedient solution to rattly side glass.

I've noticed that Bayside Breeze has been closing in on Black Ice and New Car Scent as the most popular Car-Freshener Little Trees found in junkyard cars.

It would be fun to own a Jetta Trek bicycle, though I think I'd prefer a Lexus F Sport bike (seen here in a Yokohama dealership with matching Lexus golf clubs, last year). The $10,000 price tag feels a bit steep, though.

This route is the best one if you want to see the heart of Moscow. It goes right through the major places of interest and touches upon the most exciting and vibrant areas of Moscow such as part of the Boulevard Ring, which is absolutely loved by everyone.

Cozy streets of Zamoskvorechye will never leave you indifferent. This district has a long and vivid history and is full of old baroque houses along with Stalinist buildings. It includes three theatres, three museums and sixteen churches.

Back in the 18 th century Zamoskvorechye was known as a quiet, country-like land of single-storey houses and conservative businessmen. It remained country-like and is much more filled with business than before, as this area is just right in the city centre.

Everything show on the propery deeds is printed on the board's field as well. The cards' sizes vary (appr.65x44 mm), which most probably means they were cut out a sheat by hand. The Surprise cards (in the middle of each side, where normally the stations are) are represented by an octagonal , the Message cards by an outlined bird . The 7 banknotes are one-sided color printed on white paper; the colors slightly differ from those of the game printed in Azerbaijan. The denominations are in roebels resp: 100 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 - 5000 - 10000 and 50000 . The houses are blue discs (diam.15 mm); the hotels are red discs.  The 6 tokens are colored pawns. Both dice are red . The price of 16 Roeble of this set is printed on the lid's rim .

" This is a sort of "communist Monopoly". The players go around the board, but which leg of the board they're allowed on depends on how far they've risen in the hierarchy yet. The most visible status symbol is your apartment size --and the competition for the one and only full-size Dacha can be ferocious. There are a number of other status perks, such as use of the State Car. All in all, a very amusing game that actually does capture a fair amount of the flavour of life in the communist USSR before its fall. "

There are 2 kinds of cards , the Wealth (with sickle) and Secret Police (with star) cards. The cards shown says:            "The player on your right threatens to denounce you - Pay him two Wealth cards. Why not pay him enough so you can denounce him?"

Under the well known red bar is the last part of side 4 with CTAPT at the left end.  The game board touches familiar, so ordinary solid. The word Monopoly is in black characters in a frame sloping over the board. The playing side of the board is blue green and the back side is light blue . Half of the innerbox contains a carton filling printed with red towers of the Kremlin buildings, with next to it the word Monopoly in large red Russian characters. The rest of the inner box is filled with a plastic tray with 7 sections for the banknotes and the other parts. The bottom of the box is unprinted. The Shans and Obschestwenaja kazna cards have a real American appearance, i.e. with those nice illustrations of Uncle Pennybags. The banknotes are "Monopoly roubles" with Uncle Pennybags' portret. The 7 denominations are: 1(white) - 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 - 100 and 500 . The green houses and red hotels (both with centric placed chimneys) are made of plastic. The 10 light metal tokens are "Made in Hong Kong". Moreover an 11 th token is added: a silver Russian bear . Over CTAPT! one receives 200 Rouble.

The price of this set amounted to US$ 42.- Februari1996 (in Helsinki -Finland!).
