Woman Killed by Tiger After Exiting Her Vehicle at Beijing Animal Park

CCTV footage shows a woman being mauled and dragged away by a tiger.

— -- One woman died and another was severely injured after a tiger attacked them when they exited their vehicle while at the Beijing Badaling Wildlife World this weekend, according to Yanqing County government.

The incident, caught in part on surveillance video, took place on Saturday at an outdoor, drive-through animal park in China, where visitors can drive around in their cars and view exotic animals as if on a safari. The tragedy occurred when one woman exited her vehicle while in the Siberian tiger enclosure part of the animal park.

Badaling Wildlife World was immediately closed following the incident, and an investigation is underway, according to the Yanqing County government's official blog.

A woman was killed by a tiger over the weekend after jumping out of a car in a Beijing animal park to try to save her daughter from a tiger attack, local government officials said.

At least one tiger mauled the women on Saturday at Badaling Wildlife World in a section that allows people to drive their own vehicles through a Siberian tiger enclosure, the Yanqing County government said in a written statement .

Surveillance video that circulated widely online showed a woman exit a car, then walk to the other side of the vehicle, where she was attacked a few seconds later by a tiger. As the animal dragged her away, her husband and mother jumped out in an attempt to rescue her.

The woman left the car because of an argument with her husband, reported The Legal Evening News, based in Beijing. The Beijing News, also based in the Chinese capital, quoted a friend of the family who denied that the couple had been fighting.

The woman who was first attacked was badly injured, and her mother, who left the car in an effort to save her daughter, was killed, The Beijing News reported. The woman’s husband was uninjured, as was their child, who remained in the vehicle, the newspaper said.

The park, near a famous section of the Great Wall in a county north of central Beijing, has had serious safety problems before. In March, a park employee was killed by an elephant . A security guard who stepped out of a patrol vehicle was killed by a tiger in 2014.

In 2009, an 18-year-old man was killed by a tiger in the park after he scaled a fence with two friends to enter the animals’ enclosure. The men had apparently been trying to take a shortcut through the park after a hike along the Great Wall, reported Xinhua, a state-run news agency.

While the number of wild tigers in China has dropped to fewer than two dozen living in the far northeast, where they cross back and forth into Russia, thousands of tigers are raised in parks around the country. Visitors to parks in cities like Harbin can pay to feed them, sometimes with live animals. Critics say such breeding programs do little to help wild populations and are sometimes used as cover for the illegal trade in animal parts, like tiger pelts and wine made from their bones.

Tiger mauls grandmother to death at Beijing safari park

Beijing Badaling Wildlife World promises visitors a safari experience just 30 miles from the center of the Chinese capital — customers can drive their own cars through a park where lions, tigers and other wild game roam free. But on Saturday afternoon, one family’s outing went horribly wrong, ending with a Siberian tiger mauling a 57-year-old grandmother to death.

The incident, caught on security camera footage aired by state-run China Central Television, is chilling: A woman can be seen on the video stepping out from the front passenger’s side of a white sedan and walking around to the driver’s side. As her husband opens his door, a tiger suddenly bounds up to the vehicle, knocking the woman to the pavement and dragging her off the roadway.

The man rushes out of the car to come to his wife’s aid, along with the woman’s mother, who had been sitting in the back seat along with the couple’s son.

Although park staff appeared on the scene almost immediately in a green SUV, a second tiger attacked the older woman, killing her on the spot, authorities said.

The younger woman, who according to local media reports is in her 30s, was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive. The park was closed pending an investigation.

Why the woman got out of the vehicle remains unclear. Park visitors are required to sign an agreement saying they will lock their doors, keep their windows up and not get out of their vehicles while driving through the 1.5-square-mile facility, which sits near the Great Wall northwest of Beijing. Loudspeakers along the driving route continually remind visitors to stay in their cars.

Although some initial reports suggested the woman left the car because of an argument, later accounts quoting colleagues of the husband said the family believed they had already driven out of the wild-animal zone when the woman got out of the car.

Badaling Wildlife World’s website says visitors can “feed the beasts” and “get close to wild animals.” In one section with particularly unfortunate wording, it says: “You can get to know the process of returning animals to their wild state and feel the meaning of ‘survival of the fittest.’”

A Beijing government tourism site describes Badaling Wildlife World as the largest wildlife zoo in the country, with about 10,000 animals including bears, kangaroos, monkeys, wolves and peacocks. Admission costs about $13.50 for adults. The park is also known as Badaling Safari World.

It wasn’t the first deadly incident at the facility. In 2009, three young men who were on an outing at the Great Wall decided to take a shortcut home and hopped the park’s fence; an 18-year-old was killed by a tiger.

In a 2012 incident that echoed the events of this weekend, a female visitor got out of her car — apparently to urinate by the roadside — and was bitten by a tiger. She survived.

In 2014, a park ranger was bitten by a tiger and died. And this past spring, a park staffer who was cleaning the elephant habitat was trampled to death by one of the pachyderms.

The U.S. has at least one similar drive-through wild animal park, called Lion Country Safari, in Palm Beach County, Fla. Another branch of Lion Country Safari was located in Orange County and was open from 1970 to 1984.

Yingzhi Yang and Nicole Liu in The Times’ Beijing bureau contributed to this report.

What to expect on a game drive in Africa? 15 things you need to know

What to expect on a game drive in the African bush as part of your safari itinerary? Experiencing a safari of a lifetime with stunning bird and wildlife sightings is on top of every traveler's bucket list! Expect to learn new insights and even more appreciation for Africa and its magical nature.

This complete guide to game drives explains 15 things you need to know about going on a game drive in Africa   to see wildlife and birdlife in their natural habitat. For example, tips about what to bring on a safari game drive , what to wear, safety rules during your game drive , types of safari vehicles used, the best time for wildlife viewing and other do's and don'ts for the best game drive experience in Africa .

What to expect on a game drive in Africa?

Did you know the term 'game' originally comes from the hunt on the most difficult and dangerous (game) animals in Africa , like a buffalo, elephant , or lion ? Nowadays, you don't go out hunting, but safely and peacefully searching for wild animals from the comfort of your safari vehicle. Safari is a Swahili word for 'journey' , referring to the whole safari trip that includes for example wildlife game drives , walking safaris , boat tours, and more.

1. What to see on a game drive in Africa?

You can't predict what you get to see on a safari game drive . We simply don’t have any influence on the animals' behavior. In fact, we don’t even want to influence their behavior because we try not to disturb the animals in their own natural habitat.

It’s good to know that the amount and diversity of animals differ in every safari destination in Africa . Generally, you will spot zebra  and various antelopes like impala or gazelle. Other animals that are relatively easy to spot are baboons, giraffes, wildebeests, and warthogs .

wildlife photography Kenya: baby warthog

Most people aren’t very interested in birds, but did you know that Africa is home to more than 2000 bird species ? From bright-colored small birds to prehistoric shoebills and huge pink male ostriches. Africa is a true birdwatcher’s paradise! As soon as you learn more about the types of birds and their behavior, there's a chance you will become a bird-lover. At least, that is what happened to me. The more you learn, the more you start appreciating every little bird you see and before you know it, you are keeping a list of birds spotted on your game drive .

When you go on a few morning and afternoon game drives in a row, the chances of seeing bigger animals like elephants, lions , cheetahs, and buffalo are higher. Out of the Big Five , Rhinos and leopards are the most elusive animals to spot.

photographing wildlife Maasai Mara Kenya

Some people expect to see the so-called ' Big Five ' easily because safaris are often advertised with the Big 5 game animals. Keep in mind that it can be hard to spot all of these wild animals, especially in one single game drive . Also, do some research if the Big Five animals are home to the safari destination you are visiting. Some African National Parks or game reserves don't have all of the Big Five and you don’t want to be disappointed because your expectations weren’t realistic. Some people still ask me if I have seen bears or tigers in Africa . Well, I haven't and I never will. You get the point.

2016 safari drive

In general, you may consider yourself very lucky if you see the Big Five on your safari trip in Africa . Seeing them all in one game drive is almost like winning the jackpot. There are places in Africa where these chances are higher, but there's more to safari Africa than the Big Five .

2. What type of vehicles are used for a safari game drive?

Most game drive vehicles are 4WD vehicles that have been modified according to specific safety features. The 4WD (4-wheel drive) or 4X4 vehicle makes sure the car has a more stable and controlled grip on roads. This is more comfortable for all the passengers, especially with off-road driving, which is often possible on game drives in private reserves or in conservancies. Land Cruisers and Land Rovers are often used.

Some safari vehicles have a pop-up roof (mostly in East Africa ), others have a roof but open sides, which treats you to an amazing 360-degree sight. These safari cars are mostly found in Southern Africa . If you're driving in an open vehicle like that, it might be windy, so don't forget to wear layers. I've included a list of what to wear on a game drive further in this article and I also wrote a complete safari packing guide for you.

Game drive vehicles or mini busses can normally accommodate 4 to 9 individuals; this depends on the type of vehicle. For photography, it’s nice to have enough space, a wide sight, and stability. These are some main reasons why I prefer spending more money on a comfortable private safari vehicle and a private guide.

Are you a photography lover?  I also wrote tips about planning a photo safari in Africa.

3. Types of game drive: self-drive vs. guided game drive

There are two main types of game drives in Africa: a self-drive and a guided game drive . A guided game drive can be in a group or private and there are usually morning game drives and afternoon game drives . Sometimes they also offer night game drives in search of nocturnal animals.

#1 Self-drive

In some National Parks or private reserves, like Addo Elephant National Park and Kruger National Park in South Africa , you can drive on your own. This is called a self-drive game drive . On an adventurous self game drive, you are the one behind the wheel deciding where to go. At the entrance of the National Park, you will receive a map and you have to stay on designated roads. You can view the animals from the comfort of your own (rental) car.

#2 Guided game drive

A guided game drive is led by a knowledgeable and certified field guide or driver-guide who knows the area and its history very well. A guided game drive can be in a group or you can opt for a private game drive. In my opinion, a guided game drive is more impressive than a self-drive. An important reason is that self- game drives are mostly only possible in the bigger National Parks, with tar roads where it’s more crowded and touristic.

When you are on a game drive with a professional guide , it’s not only about finding animals, but it’s a complete African bush experience , using all of your senses and enjoying the beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, and learning about their behavior and environment. Therefore, I would say a (private) guided game drive is the best game drive in Africa .

photography safari adventure Africa

A professional safari guide , tracker , or ranger can tell you a lot of details about the animals, the ecosystem, animal tracks, and the local culture. On a self-drive safari, you miss a lot of information and the experience is different. Local guides even know stories about individual animals and their relatives because they see them frequently.

Another advantage of a field guide is that they are connected to a radio station where guides and rangers share information about spectacular sightings. A guided wildlife game drive is more than driving and trying to spot animals. It’s a complete adventure of learning, enjoying, and being in nature.

maasai guide kenya

4. What to expect on a guided game drive in Africa?

On a guided game drive , your goal is to experience being in the bush and see African wildlife in their natural habitat. The best time to spot wildlife is during the coolest times of the day when most animals are active. For that reason, game drives typically take place in the early morning, afternoon, or night. Depending on the game drive you booked, you will head out with a guide and your private travel group or with a shared group of up to 12 people.

On the drive, you can expect to see different animal species. While observing the animals, your guide will tell you interesting animal facts to learn more about the animal's behavior. A good ethical guide will turn off the vehicle at a safe distance from the animal sighting with the sun on your back, to give you the best photo opportunity and a safe place to ask questions about what you see. It’s a great way to learn about Africa’s wildlife and the African bush in general.

2016 safari drive

In many reserves, national parks, or conservancies, guides are in radio contact where they share information about wildlife sightings. Therefore, chances of seeing wildlife are high, but never guaranteed because the animals are wild and roam freely through the parks and reserves. When it’s quiet in terms of spotting wildlife on the African plains, it's advisable to speak to your guide and learn from him to gain knowledge about Africa's remarkable nature.

During the drive, a professional guide will also stop for a coffee stop or comfort break  to stretch your legs, go to the bush toilet , and have a drink or snack. On morning game drives you also have the opportunity to enjoy a breakfast in the bush. I love these long morning game drives .

Breakfast on morning game drive

5. How long does a game drive last?

An average safari game drive takes about 2,5 to 4 hours , depending on what you see and your game viewing preferences. When you spot a leopard while heading back to the lodge for breakfast, breakfast can wait. The length or distance of a game drive also varies depending on where you are and what you'll see on the drive. Some destinations offer a full-day game drive , which can take up to 8 hours . During a full-day game drive, you will bring a packed breakfast (and lunch) and you will eat out in the bush, with stunning views over the African plains or a water hole. Some destinations offer night game drives , which are often shorter. Night game drives usually last about two hours.

2016 safari drive

6. What is the best time to go on a game drive in Africa?

A game drive activity is possible throughout the day and even a full-day game drive is a good option. Some parks limit driving, for example from sunrise (6 AM) to sunset (6 PM). It also depends on where you are.

The best time to go on a game drive in Africa is usually the hours around sunrise and sunset. These are the coolest hours of the day when the animals are more lively. In the early morning or early evening chances of seeing animals hunt are higher. In the middle of the day, when it's usually hot, there's less action. Lots of animals hide in the shade or in the bushes. If you for example find lions , they are most likely relaxing or sleeping. But, the bush is the bush and you'll never know what happens, therefore I love full-day game drives to take it all in.

2016 safari drive

7. What to expect on a morning game drive?

Morning game drives typically start around 06.00 - 6.30 am when the sun slowly starts to rise. After a cup of coffee and a pre-breakfast snack, it’s time to leave for a morning game drive . It can be cold in the morning, so it’s good to put on warm layered clothes. You are driving in an open vehicle, so the wind can be harsh. The advantage of the lower temperature in the morning is that animals are most active. During the morning it can warm up quickly, for that reason it’s good to wear layers. On a clear morning, the lights of the sun reflect a golden glow, which is perfect for taking photos. I love this time of the day, it’s worth getting up early.

On the morning game drive, a coffee stop with tea/coffee and some biscuits is included. At around 10.00 am, you normally head back to camp for breakfast but sometimes you also have the opportunity to go on a long morning game drive where a bush breakfast on a secluded picturesque place in the wilderness is included.

Sunrise Mara River Kenya

8. What to expect on an afternoon game drive?

An afternoon game drive typically starts between 3 pm and 4 pm. After a well-deserved lunch and some relaxing time, you go out for a lovely wildlife adventure. During the game drive, the sky will treat you with the magical colors of an iconic African sunset. On a clear day, the sky will turn red, while on cloudy days, the sky changes in dramatic scenery. Your guide will stop at a beautiful place with a view to enjoy the sunset with a sundowner and a snack. The African Amarula liquor, a beer, or Gin Tonics are the most popular sundowner drinks. You will head back to the camp before dinner.

safari sundowner on afternoon game drive in Africa

9. What to see on a night game drive?

Night game drives in Africa are not always possible in National Parks, but in many (private) reserves and conservancies, you can have the unique experience of driving after sunset. On a night game drive , you go out in the dark to spot Africa’s nocturnal animals; active by night. Examples of nocturnal animals are porcupines, genets, aardvarks, civet cats, spring hares, and bush babies.

During a night drive , it’s also possible to bump into a leopard, hippos, and lions . After sunset, hippos go out of the water to graze, and lions are more active hunters at night. Your guide will use red (UV) light that doesn't hurt the animals' eyes but allows you to observe the animals in the dark. Spotting animals on a night drive is more challenging, but a cool experience.

Masai Mara Leopard on Night Game Drive

10. Where to go on a game drive in Africa?

There isn't a single best place to go for a game drive in Africa. Game drives are beautiful at any African safari destination. Kenya is considered to be the best safari destination for wildlife. But also countries such as Botswana , South Africa , Namibia , Zambia , and Uganda offer amazing wildlife experiences. Your game drive destination also depends on the wishes you have for the rest of your safari trip.

If you only want to concentrate on wildlife, I would highly recommend taking a look at Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park in Tanzania , the Masai Mara Conservancies in Kenya , or Kruger National Park and the surrounding private game reserves in Limpopo .

RELATED: 13 reasons to visit Limpopo, South Africa

If you love to have an exclusive luxury safari experience in South Africa , I would advise taking a look at Shamwari Private Game Reserve , Thanda Safari, Leopard Mountain Lodge in Manyoni Game Reserve, or Shalati - the Train on the Bridge - in Kruger National Park.

11. Is it safe to go on a game drive?

Yes, game drives in Africa are generally safe . Keep in mind that there is always a risk of danger when you are in the African bush with wild animals. As long as you listen to your guide and follow the safety rules, you don’t need to worry.

Safety rules on a game drive are for example;

  • Remain seated and keep your arms, legs, and cameras inside the car
  • Don’t scream, lower your voice, and don’t make sudden moves when you're close to wildlife
  • Turn your phone to airplane mode and on silent
  • Don’t wear colorful clothes, but think 50 shades of khaki
  • It's better to not drink or eat while moving
  • take lots of images, but respect endangered animals (think twice about what you post on social media)
  • If you're on a night game drive , don't use your flash; your guide will use a spotlight
  • Always listen to your guide

Safari guides are well-trained and game-drive vehicles are designed for safety. In case of any danger, always listen to the instructions of your safari guide . Are you traveling with children? Children under the age of 4 are often not permitted on the game drives. Check this with your travel agent or at the lodge or reserve you're staying.

12. What to bring on a game drive?

It's always good to prepare yourself before going on a game drive. The night or morning before the drive, your guide will usually tell you what to expect, what to take on a game drive, and what to wear.

I recommend the following things to bring on a safari game drive to get the most out of your African bush experience:

  • Smartphone or camera, including charged batteries
  • Binocular to spot wildlife or birds in the distance
  • Neutral-colored layered clothes and closed shoes for when you get out of the vehicle
  • Hat to protect yourself from the sun, buff, scarf, or beanie
  • Rain jacket
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Water to stay hydrated

13. What to wear on a game drive?

The best clothes to wear on an African game drive are comfortable, lightweight, and neutral. khaki colors. What colors are better not to wear in the African bush? Do not wear any bright colors on a game drive, and preferably no black, white, blue, or camouflage. Bright colors can scare off animals or radiate danger for animals, while black and white colors attract insects.

Always try to wear layers , because the weather can change quickly. Also, bring a hat and raincoat, and wear closed shoes. The best safari clothes are the ones that are dirt-repellent, breathable, and quick-dry.

14. Is a game drive ethical?

Yes. Care for the environment always comes first. The ethics of certified field guides - who respect nature and have deep knowledge about the African bush - require them to drive slowly and carefully around wildlife to avoid causing stress to the animals. That also means not stopping too close to an animal sighting or not joining a sighting because of respecting the rules regarding the maximum number of cars at a sighting.

Travel to Zimbabwe: spotting wildlife on safari in Zambezi National Park

Wildlife game drives mostly take place on designated tracks to avoid damage to plant life. Off-road driving is not allowed in most national parks in Africa , although some private game reserves and conservancies do allow driving off-road in search of wildlife. For example, the Mara conservancies around the Mara National Reserve.

When off-roading is allowed in search of wildlife, the guide will use parts with more resilient soil to minimize the impact. Game drives can also help in protecting wildlife as the fees provide money for nature and wildlife conservation efforts. The presence of guides and rangers also discourages animal poaching.

15. Your game drive experience in Africa - a drive through the wild!

Lastly, I would like to suggest doing your research when planning a safari game drive at certain places in Africa, because there is nothing more disappointing than failing expectations. Every traveler has different wishes. For example, I like to stay longer at one sighting to capture authentic wildlife images. That’s one of the reasons why I prefer a private guide.

In some places, there are rules about approaching a sighting, like no more than two or three vehicles at a sighting. This is to protect and respect the animals and is often the case in conservancies or private game reserves. I like these rules and it gives you the feeling of exclusivity. Other destinations can be very busy. You may come across a dozen of safari vehicles. This is regularly the case in large national parks in the high season. This kind of situation can ruin your safari experience. Be prepared and get the best out of your African game drive experience! Taking aim at hunting tourism in Africa, barbed documentary Safari places viewers in the hunters’ point-of-view with formal rigor. Following Germanic travelers as they slaughter exotic animals on hunting farms, the film underscores contradictions and racism in graphic and grotesque fashion.

Knowsley Safari Park facts for kids

Knowsley Safari Park is a safari park and tourist attraction in the Knowsley area of Merseyside , England. Knowsley Safari Park is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). The safari park contributes to conservation and research through links with conservation projects and its links with universities in Liverpool, Chester and Manchester.

Tiger Trail

The equatorial trail, african elephant, southern white rhinoceros, zone 1+11 - eastern asia, zone 2+8 - southern asia, zone 3+4+6 - african savannah, zone 5 - african woodland, zone 7 - african savannah, zone 9 - eurasia, zone 10 - african savannah, animal care, images for kids.

The park was opened in July 1971 by Edward Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby and Jimmy Chipperfield using the expertise of general manager Laurence Tennant MBE, formerly the Chief Game Warden of Parks in Uganda and Botswana . Initially the road through the park was 3.5 miles (5.6 km), with visitors driving past lions , cheetahs , monkeys , giraffes , zebra , elephants and various antelope . Due to the popularity of this route, an additional 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of road was added in 1973, and camels , buffalo , white rhino , and tigers were added to the park. Over the years, a few modifications have been made. For instance, tigers are now displayed in enclosures within the reserve, and a bypass around the baboons was built for visitors who are worried about damage to their cars.

The park was also home to a former RAF airfield which closed at the end of World War II . The RAF airbase situated at the safari park was also known as No 49 SLG or RAF Knowsley Park and was in use between 13 May 1942 – November 1944.

The park has hosted several sporting events including the Olympic torch relay, watched by 6,000 children and families in June 2012. The park hosted the finish of Stage Two of the 2012 Tour of Britain cycling event and hosted Stage Three of the 2013 Tour in September of that year.

Zoological collection

Situated around Knowsley Hall on the ancestral estate of the Earl of Derby, the reserve is home to different animals. The Derby Estate have a tradition of keeping animals, ever since the famous artist and nonsense-poet Edward Lear was employed there in the 19th century to paint pictures of the Earl's collection.

The park is open to the public and customers drive around the park in their own vehicles. There is a bypass route past the baboons for those who wish to avoid the risk of the baboons damaging their cars. In 2009 the baboons made the news all over the world when a video was released showing how they were intelligent and curious enough to open car roofboxes.

Amur Tiger Trail opened 25 May 2018, home to the Amur Tiger otherwise known as the Siberian Tiger. The area is 10,000m2 and includes forested areas, natural streams and ponds.

This exhibit focuses on animals who thrive in habitats around the Earth's Equator . The exhibit also houses the 'Equatorial Express', a small train which visitors can ride to gain a unique viewpoint of the animals. 4 completely different species of animals are housed in this exhibit, the South American tapir , Sitatunga, Rhea and the Capybara .

Until 2017 the park housed a herd of 4 adult cows named Tana, Ashanti, Nala and Juba. They were transported to Zoo Parc d'Beauval, France to enter the European Breeding Programme and allow for transformations on Knowsley Safari's Foot Safari. Knowsley previously housed a bull named Nissim, who collapsed in June 2014. Knowsley also recently lost their cow named Shaba due to a long battle with elephant arthritis .

Knowsley's crash of 11 adult rhinos is one of the most successful and genetically diverse breeding groups in Europe. The latest calf (as at 4 June 2016), Nomvula (Mother of Rain – a reference to the recent wet weather), born to mum Meru and is the 19th to be born at the facility in the last 40 years. Nomvula is Meru's 6th calf and was born on 2 January 2016.

Safari Drive

The Safari Drive is the park's main attraction and contains over 29 species of animals in 7 zones.

This zone contains: Père David's deer , Yak , Kiang and Bactrian camel .

This zone contains: Blackbuck , Nilgai , Eld's deer, Chital (Axis Deer) and Barasingha.

Zone 6 is over 100 acres and contains over a mile of road. It is one of Knowsley's two white rhino paddocks and is one of the largest in the UK. This zone contains: Southern White Rhino, Roan antelope, Eland, Lechwe, Wildebeest , Plains Zebra , African Forest Buffalo, Ostritch and Waterbuck.

This zone contains: Blesbok and Bongo

This zone contains exclusively the Olive baboon, which are famous for removing windscreen wipers and other appendages off vehicles. There is a car-friendly route which totally removes this zone however is still visible from outside the perimeter. This leads directly to zone 6. Various animals have been housed with the baboons in the past. Examples are: Barbary sheep, Nilgai , Ankole Cattle and Zebras . Other types of monkeys were housed with the baboons in the past, which were: Hamadryas baboons , Chacma baboons , Yellow Baboons and Drills , according to the 1972 guidebook.

This zone contains: European Bison , Fallow Deer and European Moose

This zone contains: Lion , and the Somali wild ass. This zone previously housed African wild dog , Iberian Wolf and Siberian Tiger .

Railway and other attractions

The park features a 15 in ( 381 mm ) gauge railway, 'The Lakeside Railway', on which visitors may tour parts of the site. There is also a collection of amusements and fairground rides on site plus paintballing, off-road driving challenges, and aerial extreme ropewalks.

A baboon house was added in 2006, along with African wild dogs that same year, a lion and tiger house in 2007. Red river hogs and marmosets were also added to the walkaround section, as well as an outdoor pool.

In January 2011, local animal rights activists held a peaceful demonstration after an inspection by government vets found one instance of a breach of regulations on the disposal of animal ‘by-products’. The park has since installed an enclosure for the storage of animal carcasses before disposal.

Film Review: ‘Safari’

Ulrich Seidl continues to amaze and unnerve in this brilliantly composed, deeply upsetting portrait of tourist hunters in Africa.

Safari Venice

The best films of deadpan Austrian provocateur Ulrich Seidl pull off a tricky paradox: They’re almost entirely passionless in their perspective, yet are engineered to elicit raging, sometimes conflicting, torrents of feeling. Save perhaps for the “conflicting” part, that has rarely been more true than in the case of “ Safari ,” an unremittingly horrible but altogether extraordinary portrait of European hunting tourists in Africa that affords them a platform to defend their sport — yet won’t make any converts from the justly appalled. With its already queasy subject matter and graphic extended sequences of animal killing and carving, this hard-to-shake doc — apparently less “performed” than some of Seidl’s hybrid works, but still composed with exquisite formal precision — is commercially thorny even by his prickly-pear standards, though courageous distributors will highlight “Safari’s” topicality in the wake of 2015’s international “Cecil the lion” outrage.

There’s an elite handful of directors whose films can be identified as theirs in the space of a single shot, and Seidl is one of them: Wittily deferring the expectations set up by its title, “Safari” opens on a capacious wide shot in a grey-skied European forest, with a man in Bavarian-style hunting gear solemnly sounding a hunting bugle. The composition is painstakingly symmetrical, as is Seidl’s wont, with the human subject placed front, center and low in the frame; quite aside from his daft attire, he’s dwarfed — arguably even made to look absurd — by the scale of his surroundings. Seidl’s filmmaking may refrain from overt commentary on what it captures, but it’s far from oblivious to the critical possibilities of the camera.

It’s a framing style Seidl and regular cinematographer Wolfgang Thaler return to repeatedly in the African-set talking-head sequences of “Safari,” which frequently isolate the hunters against a surrounding sea of mounted, lifelessly staring animal busts, the preserved majesty of which can only make these khaki-clad intruders look puny by comparison. Ulrich acolytes will recall this shot, in its various permutations, from a memorable vignette in the director’s 2014 feature “In the Basement,” a semi-documentary study of secret cellar-level human obsessions, which also introduced us to two of “Safari’s” interviewees: middle-aged hunting enthusiasts Manfred and Inge Ellinger, who routinely travel to Africa to collect more fauna-based trophies for their suburban Austrian home. One wouldn’t necessarily expect people to submit twice to the silent but tacitly unforgiving gaze of Seidl’s camera; their compliance is proof positive of how flexibly his films’ point of view can be shaded by one’s own.

Popular on Variety

The Ellingers are a mere sideshow in “Safari,” however — their holidaying rituals the closest this fearsomely austere film comes to overt comic relief. Instead, the focus is principally on a clean-cut quartet of family friends — Gerald, Eva and their respective teenage children Manuel and Tina — on a joint vacations to Namibian hunting resort Leopard Lodge, who speak sunnily of their killing expeditions as occasions for personal growth and bonding. Away from the more contrived setup of the interview scenes, Seidl and his crew follow them on a series of hunts, observing with detail-oriented detachment as they mark their prey, take the shot and, as a ghoulish act of victory, rearrange the slain animal for optimum photo-op potential. These stomach-knotting sequences, filmed with stealthy fluidity, will provide hunting opponents with all the ammunition the need regarding the vanity and barbarism of the process; advocates, on the other hand, will find the skilled methodology of their hobby painstakingly showcased.

Notwithstanding the uncertainty of what is prompted or directed off-camera, Seidl appears to take the same hands-off approach to interviewing his subjects, offering no visible or audible response to defensive statements that many viewers will find confoundingly irrational or hypocritical. Expect scornful laughter to ripple through many theaters when Leopard Lodge proprietor Volker Neemann, for example, opines that humans are under obligation to “act responsible to our environment and the animal kingdom,” that “if we disappeared, the world would be better off for it.” Other opinions offered are more naive, though hardly less dubious: When two beaming adolescents suggest that hunting helps animals to propagate and benefits the economy of developing nations, one is left to wonder how many generations deep this inheritance of misinformation goes.

Pointedly not granted a say in or on the proceedings, meanwhile, are the local black workers whose livelihood is enabling these privileged outsiders to realize their destructive fantasies. Once the kills have been completed and the smarmy “hunting hails” have been exchanged, it’s these laborers who are lumped with the dirtiest work: loading the beasts’ corpses into trucks and taking them back to the ranch to be skinned and dismembered. (Faint-hearted viewers who have read this far should be forewarned of the film’s most galling and formally stunning set piece, in which a giraffe is disemboweled, chainsaw-sectioned and drained of a veritable paddling-pool of blood — naturally out of sight of the animal’s proud vanquishers. If abattoir tours can turn some carnivores vegetarian, perhaps such footage could give certain leisure hunters pause.)

Seidl photographs these locals in attentive, richly lit detail, often permitting them more potency and agency in the frame than his European subjects receive — yet none is given a moment to speak. (Mr. Neemann and his wife, meanwhile, veer from the subject of hunting to lambaste Namibia’s black political administration: “If you point out the differences, you’re immediately branded a racist,” they conclude after a listing a host of us-versus-them grievances.)  This representational imbalance could be said to reflect an ongoing system of cultural oppression and neo-colonial hierarchy in Africa, making “Safari” an unlikely companion piece of sorts to “Paradise: Love,” Seidl’s fictional trilogy-starter of 2012, which offered a merciless view into Kenyan sex tourism. Detractors could just as compellingly argue that “Safari” assists that social disparity by denying its black subjects a voice; as with multiple aspects of this exhilaratingly uncomfortable film, Seidl knowingly treads a machete’s edge between observation and complicity.

Where to watch

2016 Directed by Ulrich Seidl

Africa. In the wild expanses, where bush-bucks, impalas, zebras, gnus and other creatures graze by the thousands, they are on holiday. German and Austrian hunting tourists drive through the bush, lie in wait, stalk their prey. They shoot, sob with excitement and pose before the animals they have bagged. A vacation movie about killing, a movie about human nature.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Finally had the chance to see this film on the big screen at the Golden Apricot Film Festival in Armenia.

Another incredibly powerful doc from Seidl. Images that will never leave my head.

To receive the film's final thoughts on the subject by the owner of the Leopard Lodge himself -- “The world would be better off without people." -- makes the entire experience even more vomit inducing.

Simon & Milos: From Austria to Serbia (Link – boxd.it/edGWY )

Good documentary about German hunters and safaris, but not so good Ulrich Seidl movie. It's kind of dull and short of ideas, which represents very well the safari thing, but fails to engage with more points of view. There's a try of accusing these Germans of racism, but it doesn't work and what is worse: the documentary itself presents black people from Africa as no-talking, no-thinking, raw-flesh-eating savages, when they could give us a very interesting perspective about the white hunters.

Buen documental sobre cazadores alemanes y safaris, pero no tan buena peli de Ulrich Seidl. Es un poco aburrida y corta de ideas, lo que representa muy bien un safari, pero no se involucra con más puntos de vista.…

Hunter's hail!

This is qualitatively different from most of the Seidl docs I've seen ( In the Basement , Jesus, You Know , Animal Love ), in that here the director combines his usual interview-subjects-pinned-to-the-wall-like-mounted-butterflies approach with sequences that could reasonably be compared to Direct Cinema. Seidl is clearly interested in ceding enough space to these bourgie pricks who blithely kill for sport, so that they can hang themselves with their own idiotic justifications. Sometimes they don't rationalize their desires at all, particularly the young people who seem to consider destroying a zebra or a giraffe as much of a material "right" as acquiring a Porsche or an Armani suit.

And why not? This safari is there for them as a private playground,…

Ulrich Seidl never ceases to impress me with the bizarre themes he chooses to portray, and the fantastic characters he manages to capture with his camera, both in his fiction and documentary films. This time it's a doc about rich people from rich countries who travel to Africa to kill wild animals as a leisure activity. And to have their picture taken with the dead animal, as we've all seen om Facebook. As we've all been morally enraged by.

We get to hang out with these "hunters" and their tour guides, come along for the ride. We're with them when they shoot a giraffe, and we get to see the dying animal spasm, the long neck flailing while the last…

Humanity at its Finest!

Damn, we are lost, aren't we? When you hear these rich Germans and Austrians how condescending and mighty they are, it's not really easy or hopeful to believe in a chance for us. When you hear them talk about nature is lost anyway, so why not have a little fun with it while it's still there, you can only feel the anger fill you up and the sadness overflows you, just like the life that fades out of these poor noble creatures.
