This 42-day Cruise Will Sail From Florida to Europe to the Middle East Next Year

Holland America's “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” will make 16 stops including Greece, Tel Aviv, Morocco, and more.

Holland America Line will launch a 42-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean and around Europe and the Middle East from Florida next year, inspired by a journey the cruise line took nearly 100 years ago.

The “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” cruise will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 9, 2024, and visit 16 different ports before heading back to Florida, according to the cruise company . The sailing is part of the company’s Legendary Voyages, which are longer cruises ranging from 25 to 59 days.

Travelers who board the company’s Volendam ship will first sail to the Azores before heading over to Tangier, Morocco, and on to Italy and Greece where they will have the opportunity to visit popular cities like Florence, Rome, and Athens. The cruise will then head down to Israel where guests can explore Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before making its way to Egypt and Tunisia.

On its way back to Florida, passengers will stop in Gibraltar, Spain, and Casablanca.

“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”

Holland America said the cruise is inspired by a trip the company took in 1925, which departed from New York City on the Rotterdam IV and sailed to several of the same ports next year’s cruise will visit.

Last year, Holland America celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of heritage cruises , including a special transatlantic cruise that recreated the company’s first sailing by crossing the Atlantic Ocean before the company was even incorporated.

The company is also planning an epic 133-day pole-to-pole Grand Voyage in 2025, which will sail as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

Holland America Line will launch 42-day Mediterranean cruise from Florida for under $5,200

If you want to visit the Mediterranean but long-haul flights aren’t your thing, Holland America Line has an alternative.

The cruise line is launching a new Legendary Voyage, the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage, that will take guests to 16 ports in nine countries in 2024 round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The itinerary, which includes stops in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Spain and more, was inspired by a similar 1925 voyage on the line’s Rotterdam IV ship. Paul Grigsby, Holland America’s vice president for deployment and itinerary planning, found a brochure for the cruise as he was rummaging around in his files.

“It's an opportunity for North Americans to really see a full coverage of the Mediterranean in one cruise,” Grigsby said.

When is the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise?

The sailing on the line’s 1,432-passenger Volendam ship will sail between Nov. 9 and Dec. 21, 2024.

Comic-Con at sea: New cruise will set sail in 2025 starting at $990

Where will the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise sail?

The cruise will cross the Atlantic Ocean and make its first stops in Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores in Portugal. Those will be followed by visits to Tangier, Morocco, and overnight stays in Livorno and Civitavecchia in Italy, giving guests more time to explore and offering easy access to Florence or Pisa and Rome, respectively.

From there, the ship continues its tour of Italy, sailing to Naples and Catania before heading to Piraeus, Greece.

Haifa, Israel; Alexandria, Egypt; and Cadiz, Spain – among other destinations – round out the trip before the ship returns to Florida. Holland America is still finalizing programming for the voyage, but plans on offer include a behind-the-scenes excursion at the Vatican and a late departure from Gibraltar, giving guests time for a concert at St. Michael’s Cave.

How much does the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage cruise cost?

The sailing starts at $5,189 per person based on double occupancy for an inside stateroom. The fare includes most food on board, drinks such as regular coffee and tea and more.

Holland America 42-Day Passage Inspired by Cruise from Century Ago

The 2024 cruise follows in the footsteps of the 1925 journey, visiting Portugal, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Gibraltar (United Kingdom) and Spain.

“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer, Holland America Line, said in a news release.

“Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular,” she said. “We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”

The 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage route first visits Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. A call at Tangier, Morocco, is followed by overnight visits to both Livorno and Civitavecchia, Italy.

From Livorno, guests can explore Florence or Pisa, while Rome is easily accessed from Civitavecchia. Volendam then makes way to Naples, Italy, and Catania, Sicily, before Piraeus (Athens), Greece.

Guests will then explore the Holy Land at Haifa (Tel Aviv) and Ashdod (Jerusalem), Israel, followed by Port Said and Alexandria (Cairo) in Egypt. The final ports on the voyage include La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia’ Gibraltar; Cadiz (Seville), Spain, and Casablanca, Morocco. The cruise concludes Dec. 21 at Fort Lauderdale.

What is a Legendary Voyage?

These lengthier cruises, which range from 25 to 59 days, combine the ceremony of Holland America Lines’ Grand Voyages while focusing on a singular region. They visit some of the most unique ports while offering guests an in-depth exploration. Shipboard programming is specially curated to share insights into the history and culture of the destinations visited.

Most of Holland America Line’s Legendary Voyages sail roundtrip or to/from a North American homeport, allowing visitors to see the world from their doorstep with a convenient domestic flight and easy embarkation.

The itineraries are offered on a variety of the line’s perfectly sized ships where guests enjoy the best of Grand Voyages on-board programming such as iconic theme parties, memorable sailaways and classic cruise activities to further enhance the experience.

HAL-Holland America's 42-day Atlantic, Europe and Middle East voyage roundtrip from Florida USA

CruiseMapper logo

HAL-Holland America Line is set to introduce a 42-day cruise exploring the Atlantic Ocean and various destinations across Europe and the Middle East.

Inspired by a journey undertaken by the cruise line nearly a century ago, this extraordinary voyage, known as the "42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage" cruise, will depart from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida USA) on November 9th, 2024. Over the course of the trip, travelers aboard the Volendam ship will have the opportunity to visit 16 different ports before returning back to the USA. This cruise is part of the company's Legendary Voyages, offering longer itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days.

The journey will commence by sailing to the Azores, then proceeding to Tangier Morocco , and onwards to Italy and Greece, where passengers can explore renowned cities like Florence/from Livorno , Rome/from Civitavecchia and Athens/from Piraeus . The itinerary continues southward to Israel, allowing guests to visit Tel Aviv-Haifa and Ashdod-Jerusalem , and later includes stops in Egypt and Tunisia.

As the cruise returns back to Florida, passengers will have the chance to explore Gibraltar , Spain, and Casablanca . This luxurious European voyage pays homage to a similar trip undertaken by the company in 1925, which also visited several of the same ports.

In 2022, HAL celebrated its 150th anniversary by organizing heritage cruises, including a special transatlantic cruise that replicated the company's inaugural sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, even before its official incorporation.

Looking ahead, HAL has plans for an impressive 133-day Grand Voyage in 2025, taking travelers on an epic pole-to-pole journey that will reach as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

Century-Old Sailing Inspires Holland America’s 42-Day Cruise

If long cruises and the Mediterranean are your thing, you may want to check out Holland America Line’s new 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage.

Holland America Line

Leaving on November 9, 2024, the six-week voyage allows passengers to explore 16 ports across nine countries in a roundtrip journey that begins in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After crossing the Atlantic, Volendam will stop at Ponta Delgada and Horta in Azores, Portugal before heading to Tangier, Morocco. Guests can enjoy Livorno and Civitavecchia in Italy before proceeding to Pisa or Florence. The ship will then head for Naples, Italy; Catania, Sicily; and Piraeus, Greece.

And that’s only the first half. The ship will sail from Greece for the Holy Land in Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Ashdod, Israel. Stops at Port Said and Alexandria in Egypt will follow this. The last round of ports are La Goulette, Tunisia; Gibraltar; Cadiz, Spain; and Casablanca in Morocco before returning to Florida.

A 98-Year-Old Itinerary

rome italy colosseum

Despite being the most recent addition to the cruise operator’s list of sailings, it’s based on a 98-year-old voyage. Holland America’s original ship, Rotterdam IV, left New York City on February 4, 1925, and carried only 550 passengers. Holland America’s Vice-President Paul Grigsby was inspired to recreate the sailing with many of the same stops when he found an old brochure advertised while reviewing his files. According to Grigsby, “It’s an opportunity for North Americans to really see a full coverage of the Mediterranean in one cruise.”

These significantly longer itineraries are part of what the company calls “Legendary Voyages.” Lasting between 25 and 59 days, they allow guests to explore regions like the Mediterranean more thoroughly. Cruisers who book them can expect tailored programming that’s designed to help them appreciate the history and culture of the places they visit.

Holland America Line's New '42-Day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage' in 2024 is Inspired by a Cruise from a Century Ago

Cruise sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to nine countries around the Mediterranean

SEATTLE , July 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Holland America Line is adding another Legendary Voyage  to its diverse roster of lengthier cruises from convenient gateways. The " 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage " aboard Volendam departing Nov. 9, 2024 , was inspired by a voyage the cruise line operated nearly 100 years ago. Perfectly designed for today's traveler, the 2024 departure sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida , allowing guests to experience 16 different ports across nine countries, all without international air.

Holland America Line's Volendam will depart on the new '

The original voyage that provided the vision for the " 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage " departed New York City Feb. 4, 1925 , aboard Rotterdam IV and carried just 550 guests across the Atlantic Ocean to explore many of the same ports. The 2024 cruise follows in the footsteps of the 1925 journey, visiting Portugal , Morocco , Italy , Greece , Israel , Egypt , Tunisia , Gibraltar ( United Kingdom ) and Spain .

"Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we're continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing," said Beth Bodensteiner , chief commercial officer, Holland America Line. "Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they've been very popular. We're excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight."

The " 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage " route first visits Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. A call at Tangier, Morocco , is followed by overnight visits to both Livorno and Civitavecchia, Italy . From Livorno, guests can explore Florence or Pisa , while Rome is easily accessed from Civitavecchia. Volendam then makes way to Naples, Italy , and Catania, Sicily , before Piraeus ( Athens ), Greece .

Guests will then explore the Holy Land at Haifa ( Tel Aviv ) and Ashdod ( Jerusalem ), Israel , followed by Port Said and Alexandria (Cairo) , in Egypt . The final ports on the voyage include La Goulette ( Tunis ), Tunisia ; Gibraltar ; Cadiz ( Seville ), Spain : and Casablanca, Morocco . The cruise concludes Dec. 21 at Fort Lauderdale .

What is a 'Legendary Voyage'? These lengthier cruises, which range from 25 to 59 days, combine the ceremony of Holland America Line's Grand Voyages  while focusing on a singular region. They visit some of the most unique ports while offering guests an in-depth exploration. Shipboard programming is specially curated to share insights into the history and culture of the destinations visited.

Most of Holland America Line's Legendary Voyages  sail roundtrip or to/from a North American homeport, allowing travelers to see the world from their doorstep with a convenient domestic flight and easy embarkation. The itineraries are offered on a variety of the line's perfectly sized ships where guests enjoy the "best of" Grand Voyages on-board programming such as iconic theme parties, memorable sailaways and classic cruise activities to further enhance the experience.

This New ‘Standby’ Cruise Fare Costs Just $49 Per Day—but Is It Worth It?

By Jessica Puckett

Would you be willing to wait at a port city with your bags packed, hoping to board a cruise at the last minute, all in order to secure one of the cheapest cruise deals out there? Holland America—with its industry-first standby fare offerings—is betting yes.

The line’s new Standby List Program allows travelers to put their names on a list of prospective passengers to be confirmed for a voyage if there are unsold rooms on the ship. Standby cruisers only pay $49 a day, but they receive as little as two days’ notice to get ready for the trip.

For flexible travelers, the scheme offers the possibility of huge savings. Here’s everything cruisers should know about sailing on standby.

How do the fares work?

To get on the standby list, travelers can select an itinerary on Holland America's list of standby-eligible voyages and call 877-724-5425 to join. (You can also have your travel advisor add you to the standby list on your behalf.)

Once you're on the list, you'll be charged $49 per person per day (not including taxes, fees and port expenses, which can cost several hundred dollars more). If you’re not selected for the cruise, you’ll receive a full refund.

When the week of the sailing arrives, the cruise line will start notifying standby passengers whether they made the cut. Guests are confirmed for their sailings in the order they were added to the standby list, so signing up early counts. Would-be passengers should expect to hear their status between seven to two days before the voyage’s departure.

Travelers who aren’t confirmed within two days of the sailing’s departure receive an immediate refund. Truly spontaneous travelers can choose to cut things even closer with a more nail-biting option: They can opt to remain on the standby list all the way up until 90 minutes before departure to see if there’s a no-show. If that doesn't work out, they’ll still get a full refund.

The deal could offer major savings to group travelers who have a bit of flexibility this summer, as the third and fourth guests in a stateroom can travel nearly for free—they would just be on the hook for taxes and fees. But young families are not eligible for cruising standby, as the fares are only available for travelers ages 21 and older. Since it would be a major gamble to travel long distances for an unconfirmed trip, the standby option makes the most sense for people who live in or near eligible ports like Vancouver , Seattle , San Diego , Fort Lauderdale , Boston , Montreal , or Quebec .

How can travelers take advantage?

In 2024, the bulk of standby fares that Holland America is offering are for Alaskan voyages departing Seattle, Whittier, and Vancouver, as well as New England and Eastern Canada voyages departing from Boston, Montreal, and Quebec City.

There are also a handful of transatlantic sailings departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, including an extended six-week sailing in November that meanders through dozens of Mediterranean ports in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, to name a few. Most of the dates for the standby itineraries stretch from May through September, with a few options in October and November as well.

It all sounds appealing, but there are a few factors travelers should keep in mind. “With this program, you've got to be extremely flexible in all aspects of your trip,” says Tanner Callais, founder of cruise travel advice site Cruzely . “Some of these cruises sail for extended periods of time, including up to 42 days,” which is the duration of that lengthy Mediterranean sailing. “You also don't know what sort of cabin you'll receive,” he says. “If you're someone that has to have a balcony room, then this might not be for you.

The type of cabin could, in fact, be a deal breaker for certain travelers. Holland America says it charges standby guests for an interior stateroom, a space as small as 143 square feet with no windows. But travelers could be assigned any category of room ranging up to a verandah stateroom, which ranges from 228 to 405 square feet with enough outdoor space to fit two deck chairs. However, it’s all based on availability.

“Travelers who want to benefit from a standby fare should keep in mind that once confirmed, Holland America Line assigns their room,” says Rob Clabbers, founder and president of the agency Q Cruise + Travel . “While that might result in savings, it means travelers may end up in the last remaining and likely less preferred location—above a theater or night club [or] all the way forward or aft. While this may work for some, it is definitely not recommended for those who fear seasickness, have mobility issues, would like to be close to travel companions, [or] want to be near or away from elevators,” he says.

Holland America Line also notes that these deals are intended for travelers who live within driving distance of the departure ports. “Booking a last-minute airline ticket could end up being more than the cost of the cruise,” Callais says. “That said, the fares are so low that if you have the flexibility, then it might be one of the best deals you'll ever find. This is especially the case if you're a solo traveler, as the double occupancy fare doesn't apply.”

Travelers will want to run the numbers on each voyage to ensure they’re receiving the best possible deal for enduring the hassle of last-minute arrangements. Some of the sailings do offer incredible value. “However, on other sailings, the savings are not nearly as great,” Clabbers says. “If you or your travel advisor do some research, you may very well find some sailings at fares that are similar or even lower than the $49 per day standby fare—and without the restrictions.”

For instance, it’s possible to book a seven-day Alaska sailing that departs June 9 on Holland America’s website, with prices for an inside room starting at $349 per person, plus $310 in taxes, fees, and port expenses. “You even get a $50 credit to spend on board per room, but the biggest advantage is that you can confirm this several weeks before sailing, so you can fine-tune your travel plans rather than have to wait until the very last minute,” says Clabbers.

One of the better deals would be the 42-day Mediterranean Cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale in November. Booking that sailing outright, “you would pay $5,479 plus $435 in taxes, fees, and port expenses per person based on double occupancy for an Inside room,” Clabbers says. But, if you sail the itinerary on standby and get confirmed, “you would pay a total $2,058 per person plus taxes. Obviously that would be a good deal.”

Will other cruise lines start offering standby prices?

You might be wondering why a cruise line would offer fares as low as $49 a day. At the end of the day, more guests on board means ships generate more money. “Obviously, a cruise line wants to sail with every cabin filled to maximize revenue and efficiency of scale,” says Callais. “If a room sails empty, the cruise line is still using the same amount of fuel and paying the crew and captain the same wage.”

The majority of new ships break even at 50% occupancy, while older ships need 80% occupancy to hit that benchmark, according to Tom Baker , president of Cruise Center .

Carnival Corporation, which is Holland America’s parent company, saw an average revenue of $236 per passenger each cruise day in 2023, while its direct expenses per passenger was about $156 each day, according to Callais’ analysis of the company’s earnings report . But whereas most of a line’s expenses are fixed, there’s always more room to increase revenue with more passengers, who are bound to spend more on the ship. “In other words, even if this standby rate is less than the cruise line would make at a normal rate, it's still better to earn a little money from it than zero,” Callais says.

Although Holland America is the only major cruise line currently offering the standby fare, it could catch on at other companies if it brings in enough money. “Like most industries, cruise lines are constantly looking at competitors and seeing what they are offering or doing that might benefit their business,” Callais says. “If it works, it will get picked up by others.”

Regardless, it’s likely that standby offerings will stay limited to certain lines, as well as specific ports and times of year. “If the program trains too many passengers to just wait and cruise standby, then that could actually end up hurting the bottom line,” Callais says.

But for many travelers, planning and looking forward to a trip is half the fun: "Part of the joy of travel is the anticipation of the experience," says Clabbers.

Holland America is out with another wowzer of a cruise itinerary

Gene Sloan

Holland America is taking inspiration from the 1920s for another epic cruise.

The Seattle-based line on Tuesday revealed plans for a 42-night sailing from North America to the Mediterranean and back that mimics an ambitious voyage the line offered in 1925.

Scheduled to kick off on Nov. 9, 2024, the 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage itinerary, as it's being called, will offer North American travelers a chance to experience a grand tour of the Mediterranean without ever getting on a transatlantic flight — just like in the 1920s.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Starting in Fort Lauderdale, the voyage — on the line's 1,432-passenger Volendam — will include calls at 16 ports across nine countries, including multiple stops in Israel for visits to iconic Holy Land sites and in Egypt to see the pyramids and other famous landmarks.

Other stops include Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores archipelago of Portugal as the ship crosses the Atlantic, followed by a call at Tangier in Morocco. There will also be overnight visits to Livorno and Civitavecchia, Italy (the gateway ports for Pisa and Rome), and day stops at Naples and Catania in Italy. The latter stop is on the island of Sicily.

Piraeus, the port for Athens, Greece, is also on the schedule, as is La Goulette, Tunisia (the port for Tunis, where cruisers can tour the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage); Gibraltar; Cadiz, Spain; and Casablanca in Morocco.

The cruise concludes on Dec. 21 in Fort Lauderdale after a return trip across the Atlantic.

The 1925 version of the itinerary was similar, although it began and ended in New York City instead of Fort Lauderdale. That trip took place on the fourth version of the line's Rotterdam (Holland America has had seven ships called Rotterdam over the years, including one currently sailing).

Holland America says 550 passengers were aboard the original sailing, which departed from New York City on Feb. 4, 1925.

In an interview with TPG in advance of the announcement, the Holland America executive in charge of itinerary planning, Paul Grigsby, said he had already tasked the line's itinerary planning team with creating an epic cruise from North America to the Mediterranean when he discovered a brochure about the 1925 itinerary among his private collection of steamship ephemera.

"I was just messing around in my archives, and I found this thing, and I said, 'Wow, look at this,'" Grigsby said during a video call, holding up the original brochure that was used to promote the 1925 sailing.

Grigsby, who is Holland America's vice president for revenue planning and analytics, said his itinerary planners were already well into the throes of planning the Mediterranean itinerary when he found the 1925 brochure. But that didn't stop them from pulling inspiration from it for the new sailing.

"We did tweak [the new itinerary] a little bit to get it closer to this itinerary," Grigsby said. "We were able to kind of model ... what was done back in that day."

The original itinerary had 15 stops, nine of which are on the new itinerary, Grigsby noted. They could have mimicked the earlier trip even more if not for limiting factors, such as a size limit for ships visiting Monaco that wouldn't allow Grigsby's team to add it to the itinerary. Monaco was a call for the original sailing in 1925.

One big difference between the two itineraries was that the original sailing was a longer 67 days, in part because the ship spent a whopping nine days docked in Egypt for off-ship touring of the country's many historic sites.

"In the brochure, it says accommodations at the best hotels with a complete program of sightseeing with optional Nile cruises, etc. Oh, man. So amazing, huh?" Grigsby said, sounding wistful about the grand travel of a century ago.

Another difference between the two trips is that the 1925 version of the voyage wasn't a "closed loop" trip on a single ship — that is, it didn't get its customers back to North America at the end of the sailing on the same ship that took them to Europe.

Instead, the voyage ended in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and passengers had to switch to another Holland America ship for the final transatlantic leg back to New York City.

"So, in a way, our current cruise is better because it takes you from Fort Lauderdale and gets you back within 42 days," Grigsby noted.

Grigsby speculated that the travelers on the ship back in the 1920s would have extended their stays in Europe with land touring before taking the final leg back to New York. It was, after all, "The Great Gatsby" era of grand travel.

"You'd have to transfer [in Rotterdam], but I think people were like, 'Fine, I'll just go see more of Europe, and then I'll take a transatlantic back to New York when I'm ready,'" he said.

The beginning of leisure cruises

Founded in 1873, Holland America was originally a shipping and passenger line known for transatlantic crossings that took people back and forth between North America and Europe. However, starting in the 1920s, it began to occasionally offer what today would be considered more traditional cruises, taking leisure travelers to far-off destinations such as the Mediterranean for sightseeing.

The February timing of the 1925 sailing to the Mediterranean would have coincided with the time of year when there was less demand for transatlantic crossings.

"They needed the ships doing transatlantics during the summer but not so much in the winter," Grigsby noted. "So they put these ships on cruises."

A 'legendary voyage' for Holland America

The new Mediterranean itinerary is the latest addition to a new series of so-called Legendary Voyages that Holland America unveiled in March. The extra-long sailings, scheduled to take place over the next three years, focus on a single region and range from 25 to 59 nights in length. They also have special programming.

The lineup of recently announced Legendary Voyages includes both previously offered routings and some all-new routes — the latter including an epic itinerary focused on Japan that will last more than 50 days.

In general, the voyages will focus on far-off destinations — including Australia and New Zealand, the Amazon and South America, the South Pacific and Hawaii, Greenland and Iceland, Asia, Alaska and the Arctic Circle. However, in a twist, most of the sailings are designed to begin and end in a North American port, meaning that North American passengers can reach distant places without ever getting on an international flight.

The new lineup of long trips is designed to augment Holland America's celebrated collection of even longer Grand Voyages — far-ranging, often world-circling sailings that typically are 70 nights or more.

The initial grouping of Legendary Voyages announced in March included 17 specific departures between late this year and early 2025.

42 day cruise on holland america

Grigsby said Holland America hasn't offered a voyage from North America to the Mediterranean and back for quite a few years. And never before has one of the sailings taken inspiration from one of the line's first such sailings nearly a century ago.

That said, Holland America has long been known for longer sailings from U.S. ports that got people to far-flung places around the globe. The new Legendary Voyages and an expanded lineup of other long voyages mark a doubling down by the line on such trips.

"When we first introduced the Legendary Voyages, our aim was to build on our success and tradition as really a leader in longer voyages and more-differentiated voyages," Grigsby said.

With the new Mediterranean itinerary, the line is "just adding one more opportunity in that series of cruises and really one more region that we hadn't covered as well with the Legendary Voyages," he said.

Fares for the new 42-night itinerary start at $5,189 per person, not including taxes, fees and port charges of up to $435 per person. More information can be found at the page for the sailing at Holland America's website.

Would you roll the dice on a $49-a-day holland america standby cruise.

After almost sinking during COVID, the cruise industry is getting hot again. New ships, from the “city at sea” 7,600 passenger Icon of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) to smaller, all-luxury ships like the 920-passenger Explora I are bringing new interest—and new cruisers—to the industry.

Innovative new marketing programs are also boosting cruising. Holland America is expanding its Standby List Program , where passengers can potentially get booked on a cruise for as low as $49 a day.

Once you’ve picked a destination and a sailing day, you can get on the standby list. (This means paying for the discounted cruise you’ve selected immediately.) If your lucky number comes up, Holland America will let you know if you’ll be sailing between two and seven days before the ship leaves port. If no vacancies materialize, the money will be returned to your credit card.

You will have to be able to live with uncertainty as to what kind of stateroom you’re getting.

“Guests for this program do not choose their stateroom category, so they could end up staying in a variety of different cabin types including Inside, Oceanview, or Verandah,” said a Holland America spokesperson. Where you end up “depends, in part, on where the last-minute cancellations happen. Guests will be confirmed in the order they joined the list within the week of sailing. It could be seven days or as close as 48 hours to departure. So it really is tailored for guests who live close to the port.”

But of course, as the spokesperson put, “Guests will still have access to everything onboard that full-fare paying guests do, such as world-class dining, exciting entertainment, and most importantly—access to desired destinations.”

The Holland America Standby Program launched in August of 2023 with cruises from Seattle. In October and November, the company expanded the program to include voyages from homeports in Fort Lauderdale and San Diego. Now, as the line launches its 2024 Alaska and Canada/New England sailings, guests will see standby offers sailing from ports including Boston, Vancouver as well as Seattle.

The standby concept has always been popular, typically with people who have more time than money. Travelers have tried to go standby (going to the airport without a ticket and getting on the standby list) on airlines for years. Last-minute hotel rooms are also commonly available through various vendors.

With flights, hotel rooms and cruises, the lure of waiting until the last minute is the same: a discounted deal. Once that flight leaves, the hotel calendar clicks to the next day or the ship sails, that seat, suite or stateroom is gone, empty and unsold.

With the Holland America standby program, the rates of $49 are per person per day (for either a solo cruiser or a cabin at double occupancy), but third and fourth guests sail free. The program is for guests 21 and over, so you can take your pals but not your kids.

Of course, there are additional charges. The $49 per day fare amount excludes taxes, fees and port expenses. And as with most ‘a la carte’ cruises, gratuities, liquor, Wi-Fi and other amenities are additional.

The standby program is for all vacancies on a particular cruise, although it’s certainly a win for Holland America if it can resell a cancelled trip for additional income.

You’ll be charged for each date you sign up for, immediately upon signing up, so you may want to try going standby on one cruise at a time. Once you’ve paid and are on the standby list, you can’t leave it. If offered a cruise between 7 and 2 days prior to sailing, guests will be charged the full fare whether they decide to go or not. If you’re looking for more flexibility, a spokesperson said potential passengers can also purchase a cancelation plan.

Conde Nast Traveler calls the standby program a cruise “industry first.” But author Jessica Puckett cautions that the inability to pick your room might land you in a 143 square foot interior room, rather than that 405 square foot veranda stateroom you’re dreaming of. If you “win” the small interior room, it might start feeling cell-like, especially on, say, a 42-day Mediterranean cruise from Ft. Lauderdale in November. However, that would still be a good deal financially, as instead of $5,479 plus fees for an inside room, you’d pay $2,058 plus fees.

Another potential issue might be getting on certain excursions from the ship. Some might be sold out by the time your standby booking is confirmed.

If you’re getting interested in cruising, it’s worth researching the industry. There are many lines, ships, destinations, and a seemingly endless list of options. Some deals might make more sense than going standby.

Still, the spokesperson told us that they had talked to several guests who have used the standby program multiple times successfully this season in Florida.

Passengers playing pickleball on Holland America Koningsdam.

"We see Holland America Line’s Standby Program as a win-win for guests and our business,” said Dan Rough, vice president of revenue management at Holland America. “Circumstances may arise for booked guests where they must cancel a cruise the week before sailing. The Standby Program allows us to fill those cabins with people who have already committed to going and who presumably live close enough to the port that they can make last-minute travel arrangements.”

Rough added, “For those guests with flexibility to travel, it means access to an unforgettable cruise vacation at $49 per day—an exceptional value.”

You can see a list of available Holland America sailings here , or call 877-724-5425 to get on the standby list. The page also includes some frequently asked questions.

If you live near one of the ports, is it worth taking a shot at getting a great deal on a standby cruise?

Several years ago, as a registered Rolling Stones fan, I was contacted by email one day about a “Lucky Dip” for tickets at an upcoming show at T-Mobile in Las Vegas. Like the Holland American standby offer, the deal was $50 a ticket, ‘we pick the seats for you.’ We booked a room at the now-departed Tropicana and held our breath for a few weeks, expecting nosebleed seats. Instead, we sat 20 rows up with a perfect view of the stage, especially for Keith Richards emotional solo set.

Will your roll of the “tumbling dice” bring you similar luck on a Holland America cruise? As Mark Twain put it in HUCKLEBERRY FINN, “You pays your money and you takes your chances.”

Holland America Line's Dutch Day Turns TheOrange Party Into An All-Day Event

I f you're a fan of cruises and love discovering new cultures in style, then you are probably already familiar with Holland America Line and how proud they are of their Dutch heritage. In fact, this is one of the things that I love most about sailing with them. Their ships are, in many ways, literally floating embassies that harken back to the days when Dutch merchants ruled the waves and spread their culture around the globe while bringing a wealth of food, resources, ideas, and other cultural elements back home. Now, Holland America Line is expanding on their "Orange Party" night that we talked about a few months ago and are making it a day-long Dutch Day celebration where guests can immerse themselves in the vibrant Dutch heritage through food, drinks, art, music and other activities too. During this special celebration, the "whole 'dam ship" transforms into a lively orange spectacle, complete with Dutch decor, food, and live entertainment. It's an all-day celebration that has you and your pals donning orange to commemorate King's Day. Let's take a deeper look ...

What To Expect On Dutch Day

On Dutch Day, you can expect a fusion of delicious Dutch cuisine, lively entertainment, and a unique cultural experience, immersing you in Holland America Line's rich Dutch heritage. Imagine savoring classic Dutch dishes, like stir-fried noodles or creamy pastries, as part of a themed Dutch dinner. It's all about cultural immersion that makes you feel like you're in the heart of the Netherlands. While their Pinnacle-class ships already feature the Grand Dutch Cafe, now you'll get to taste authentic Dutch cuisine across the fleet and experience other Dutch traditions first-hand. And don't forget, it's customary to sport orange attire on Dutch Day in honor of the Dutch Royal Family. This culinary experience is a celebration of Dutch heritage, and everyone is invited to join in and feel a sense of belonging.

What Is The Orange Party?

Here's a refresher in case you missed our post about the Orange Party experience on Holland America Line.

If you're looking for an electrifying way to celebrate Dutch culture aboard a Holland America Line cruise, then you'll absolutely love the Orange Party. This unique cruise event is part of the Dutch Heritage Celebration, providing a cultural immersion experience unlike any other. The Orange Party, held once per cruise, turns the ship into a sea of orange, the color symbolic of the Dutch Royal Family. It's an evening filled with Orange Party activities, from live music and dancing to sampling Dutch treats. But it doesn't end there; the party continues into the night with special Kings Day festivities. So, if you're ready to embrace your inner Dutch and join in a night of celebration, the Orange Party is just the thing for you.

Other Dutch-Themed Elements On A Holland America Line Cruise

Beyond the food and festivities, there's more to explore on the cruise if you love Dutch culture. This includes the Grand Dutch Cafe, a shipboard cafe in Koningsdam, New Statendam, and Rotterdam, which is a delightful nod to Dutch culture and cuisine. The cruise line also boasts an extensive Dutch art collection and incorporates Dutch design elements throughout the ship, further immersing guests in the Dutch experience.

Grand Dutch Cafe

Diving into the Dutch heritage onboard, the Grand Dutch Cafe is a standout feature on Holland America Line cruises, specifically on the Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Rotterdam ships. It's one of my favorite spots on the ship since I can immerse myself in a cultural experience, savoring Dutch cuisine such as split pea soup, herring, and bossche bollen and Dutch coffee, beer, and even some candy. The authentic decor transports you to the heart of the Netherlands adds to the vibrant atmosphere. While many ships in the cruise industry offer coffeeshops and casual bites, this place is special.

The Grand Dutch Cafe is more than just a dining option, it's a place where you can feel a sense of belonging, a cozy nook where everyone is welcomed to enjoy a taste of Dutch culture.

Dutch Art Collection

Another fascinating Dutch-themed element on a Holland America Line cruise is the exquisite Dutch Art Collection, particularly showcased on the ms Nieuw Amsterdam ... but also on ever one of their ships that I've sailed on to one degree or another. The collection is always a delightful blend of traditional and contemporary art, reflecting the cultural influence of the Netherlands and providing artistic inspiration to guests.

Each ship's collection design aesthetics are truly impressive. You can find yourself immersed in a world of artistic expression, surrounded by sculptures, chandeliers, murals, textiles, costumes, musical instruments, and more. Each piece tells a story, bringing the Dutch people's rich history and vibrant culture to life. It's more than just an art collection; it's an experience that connects you with the spirit of the Netherlands, making you feel like you're part of a broader, global community.

Dutch Design Elements Around The Ship

In addition to the culinary delights and Dutch art collections, you'll also notice Dutch design elements infused throughout the Holland America Line cruise ships. From the vibrant orange accents around the elevator buttons to the stately but still chic uniforms to the art collection mentioned above, these elements all help to create an immersive experience that shares the company's Dutch history and heritage with its guests.

As you explore the ship, you'll also see the Club Orange dining room, a nod to Holland's royal House of Orange. Dutch cuisine takes center stage as special features in the menu, and my favorite ... the mouth-watering erwten soep (Dutch pea soup) is something I try to have every day as well as fabulous desserts such as the stroopwafel cheesecake. Even the ship's design elements reflect Holland's rich culture and history, creating a journey that's not just about travel but a true Dutch experience.

Holland America Introduces ‘Dutch Day’ Culinary Experiences on Every Cruise

  • April 28, 2024

Rotterdam departing Rotterdam

Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” culinary experience celebrating the cruise line’s history on every sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, according to a press release.

The focal point of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many dishes also available in the Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line’s Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.

“Holland America Line remains deeply connected to our roots in the Netherlands, and Dutch Day is the perfect way to honor our history through experiences that celebrate the culinary culture of the country,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our guests appreciate special touches like Daelmans Stroopwafel for turn down or a dish in the dining room that is distinctly Dutch, and we’re excited to expand the cultural experience for an entire day to showcase more of our heritage.”

The special Dutch Dinner features both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course options include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, options include a Bosche Bol, Tompouce or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels, Dutch Day will also feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Additionally, instead of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.
