Getting to Qatar is actually pretty easy, seeing as it’s conveniently at the crossroads of the eastern and western sides of the world. Qatar Airways is the national airline, covering an impressive 160 international spots. However, there are many other airlines that fly to the country. The most popular that service Doha Hamad International Airport are Air India, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, and others.

Central Doha is located about 9 miles, or 20 minutes by car from the international airport. The easiest way to get to Doha is by metro or bus. Take the metro and it’ll take you maybe 15 minutes to get to the city center. The bus usually takes a bit longer but is incredibly budget-friendly.

Getting Around

Metro – Just recently opened a few years ago, the Doha metro is clean, efficient, and budget-friendly. The 7 lines cover just about every part of the city, with most major tourist attractions having a metro stations close by.

Bus – Buses are probably not the best way to get around the city as the primary form of transportation while you’re staying there. It’s not the most efficient – however, the hop on hop off buses are a great way to see the major attractions.

Taxi – Karwa taxis are turquoise blue and the official taxis of the capital. The tariff starts around 1.2QAR per kilometer, with higher rates at night.

Rideshare – Uber does work in Qatar, and Careem is the local Doha taxi app. Both are great options if you prefer a rideshare.

Where to Stay

West Bay – This is a more recently developed area ideal for luxury accommodation and beautiful sea vistas. The tallest and most impressive skyscrapers tower over the area, located right on the coast of Doha. Entertainment and dining choices are endless, with a fun mall and many cultural activities to do nearby.

Corniche – This is one of the most beautiful areas with lovely seaside views. The Corniche Promenade is always pleasant to stroll around.

Al Souq – If you’re a history buff or simply want a more “traditional” Qatar experience, try Al Souq. Local delicacies, artwork, and souvenirs are top-notch here, along with access to the Museum of Islamic Art. The most beautiful traditional architecture is located here and easy to get to from the airport and West Bay.

Saloona – This classic delicacy is an Arabic stew typically made with beef, fish, or lamb along with seasonal veggies along with ginger and garlic. Just about any traditional restaurant will have it, served with bread soaked in broth.

Warak Enab – Full of flavor, this light snack is perfect for any time of day. Vine leaves are stuffed full of beef, lamb, and rice complete with rich seasoning.

Balaleet – If you’re really hungry, try this satisfying dish combining vermicelli and an omelette flavored with saffron, sugar, and rose water.

Night Tours vs Day Tours

The temperature differences between day and night in Doha are incredible. If you’re there during the winter, it can get quite cold at night. Make sure you dress with warm yet breathable fabrics and we highly encourage layering so you never get too hot nor too cold.

During the daytime in the winter, you can expect a perfect climate for venturing around in the desert. In the summer, however, it can get blazing hot. Expect to sweat. Bring sunscreen.

Desert Tour Activities

Camel Riding – The key to making this a smooth ride is to not resist the camel’s swaying from side-to-side. Instead, sway with them by relaxing your body, breathing deeply, and going with the flow. Make sure to wear clothing that allows you to stretch, as you’ll have to mount the camel by throwing one of your legs over. It shouldn’t be too uncomfortable, as you’ll only be riding around 15 minutes.

Dune Bashing – Again, you want to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move around freely. You’ll be stepping in and out of sand occasionally, so make sure your shoes stay on and ideally keep out sand. Make sure to slather on the sunscreen and bring sunglasses that stay firmly on your head.

Sand Boarding – To take off and cruise down the dunes, start at the top and take little hops until you get to the edge. Drop in with your dominant foot, leaning back slightly and bending your rear knee. Flex your abs and look where you want to go – your body will instinctively take you there.

How to Dress

Dressing appropriately can be a big stressor for new visitors, but don’t worry – it’s really not as complicated as many make it out to be. The good news is that while you should follow certain guidelines, no one expects you to dress like a local.

Women – Women aren’t required to cover their heads. Skirts and shorts are somewhat normal as it gets very hot, but nothing too short. Thin straps, sleeveless tops, transparent/semi-transparent shirts, and crop tops are not tolerated. Leggings by themselves aren’t as common, though if you feel your shorts or skirts or too short, you can wear leggings underneath.

Men – Wearing shirts, polos, cargo pants, or dress pants are perfectly fine. Shorts should be at least knee-length. Sleeveless tanks and slogan t-shirts that could be taken as offensive are not tolerated. Being shirtless is not recommended unless you’re at a private beach or pool.

1. How safe is Qatar? Qatar is actually one of the safest countries in the world, with violent crime being extremely rare – even more so towards foreign tourists.

2. Are bikinis allowed? No. Speedos, bikinis, and any other article of clothing that shows off a lot of skin is not allowed. One-piece bathing suits (never with low necklines) and board shorts/swim shorts are allowed, however.

3. Is it hot everywhere? If you can believe it, there are various spots around the city with outdoor air conditioning! Galleries Lafayette, Souq Waqif, and Gharrafa Park are some of the most notable.

4. What do local schedules look like? The weekends for locals are actually Friday and Saturday, with the regular work week being Sunday through Thursday. Most places are open on Fridays, though they’ll often be closed from 11AM to 1PM for congregational prayers.

5. Can you drive in Qatar? Yes, both men and women can drive in the country.

6. Are piercings and/or tattoos allowed? Yes, however, it’s best to cover up tattoos and piercings outside of the ears.

7. Is it hard to get around if you only speak English? No, not at all. In fact, English is often seen as the country’s “second language” and many locals speak it, as well.

Winter is the best time to visit. As you probably know by now, Qatar has a desert climate which means very hot, dry heat from May to September. Try visiting between December to February, which is suitable for just about any activity.
Keep the culture in mind. Qatar is a Muslim country, which means there may be a difference in local traditions, customs, laws, and religion. We recommend being particularly aware of these factors when filming of snapping photos of people, as many locals do not like being photographed – particularly women.
Dress appropriately. This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the previous point. Dress modestly. Women have to cover their shoulders and avoid wearing bottoms that expose their legs. Men and women should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless tops when entering government buildings, healthcare facilities, and malls.
Be aware of alcohol regulations. As is the case with most Islamic countries, alcohol isn’t illegal but available only at specific restaurants, bars, and clubs. Not to mention, they’ve invoked a tax on alcohol that makes it significantly more expensive.
Public displays of affections are not allowed. Even if you’re traveling with your spouse, you are not allowed any PDA. While you can hold hands, kissing and hugging, etc. are not.

What to expect in the desert in Qatar and how to prepare?

Temperatures can vary and are dependent on wind speed. Due to the varying temperature, it is best to dress in layers and carry an extra jacket for sudden temperature drops.

Your time in the desert can also get quite dusty, and coupled with the cold weather it is advisable to wear a hat or scarf and comfortable walking shoes. Avoid wearing jeans or fancy clothing and jewelry.

We lived in Qatar for three months and we can say that the Desert Safari Qatar is one of the best tourist attractions in the country!

If you have at least three days of travel in Doha , be sure to take the desert tour. Besides its beautifulness and yielding great pictures, going on a desert safari in Qatar is a way to get in touch with a much less explored and authentic side of the country: its origins.

Before the country was recognized as a destination of luxury and sophistication , the small Arab nation was basically a desert inhabited by nomads and pearl fishermen. It was only after natural gas was discovered off its coast that Qatar began to develop into one of the richest countries in the world.

The safari in Qatar is therefore an essential part of Qatari culture and history. The guided 4×4 tour through its dunes is a wonderful way to get to know a little bit of it.

Below, we will explain how it is the Qatar desert safari , how much it costs, what to expect and more.

When is the best time for the Qatar desert safari?

As with everything in Qatar, the best time for this tour is from late autumn to early spring – October to April. All other months are too hot for any kind of tourist activity in Qatar , especially those that involve contact with nature.

Desert Safari in Qatar vs. Dubai

As we mentioned, we have also done the desert safari in Dubai . Both are very cool and similar, but, honestly, I think we liked the Dubai one better. This is because the UAE included a final stop at a camp, where there were cultural presentations and a delicious dinner.

Tourism in Qatar is still in its infancy when compared to Dubai. So, I believe there is still a lot to develop there. Who knows, maybe in a future visit to Qatar there will be more complete alternatives to the desert safari. For now, for those who are planning a trip to Doha , the Qatar desert safari is definitely worth doing!

How is the Desert Safari Qatar

The Inland Sea

The Qatar desert tour is very similar to the desert safari in Dubai , which we have also done and wrote a complete article about the experience. The big difference is that the safari Qatar tour , however, you see where the desert meets the sea. That’s a place called the Inland Sea , which is on the border with Saudi Arabia.

To be able to see the vastness of the dunes ending in the blue sea of the Gulf is a really spectacular scene. The place is very beautiful and attracts even locals, who usually spend the late afternoon there and even camp. There are other options for Qatar tour packages , but the one we recommend is the Inland Sea tour .

The before of going to the desert

As the desert safari tour lasts about 5 hours, you can decide if you prefer to do it early in the morning or in the afternoon. The first one you catch the sunrise, the latter the sunset. We opted for the sunset and it was beautiful. By the way, this is one thing we will miss from our time in Qatar : the sunsets, which never disappoint.

The driver/guide will pick you up at your hotel at the agreed time in a 4×4 with capacity for seven people – one in the front, three in the back, and another three in the compartment right back.

Tip : avoid the far back seats as they are the ones that jump the most during the maneuvers on the dunes. Or just go for it!

The first stop

With everyone on board, the driver goes towards the desert. In about half an hour, he makes the first stop: a very touristy camp where you can go for a camel ride. The camel ride in the desert doesn’t last more than five minutes.

You can also take pictures with a falcon, for a fee and have tea, free of charge. As we are not big fans of interacting with animals on tours, we just enjoyed the tea.

The adventure in Qatar desert safari

Next, we set off for the safari in the Qatar desert . This is when the adventure really begins. With the driver turning the music up loud and sliding on the dunes for about one hour. It was a very intense and cool experience, and we loved it! The car bounces non-stop, but at no time we felt unsafe.

After maneuvering on the dunes in the desert in Qatar , we reached the highlight of the tour: the visit to the Inland Sea . That is a portion of the sea that marks the border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

As we did the tour in December and it was cold, we did not go into the sea. But I believe it is possible at warmer times of the year. Just be careful, because I heard that in certain seasons the sea is full of jellyfish.

After a few moments enjoying the Inland Sea, we boarded the car again for more adventures through the dunes, until we stopped at a specific place to watch the sunset and sandboard on the dunes of Qatar . Then, the driver returns to Doha and leave each passenger in their respective accommodation (find yours here) .

The tour, as you can see, is very dynamic and fun. The desert safari Qatar is well worth it!

Where to stay in Qatar

Qatar is a country of one city: Doha. Well, to not be totally unfair, there are some other villages and small towns scattered around the peninsula. But, the only destination really worth visiting, where all the Qatari society and sights are concentrated, is Doha.

Although the city is expensive, public transportation and Uber are cheap. So, if you don’t want to spend too much on accommodation, one option is to stay in a less central area and use either uber or public transport to get around. Below we give you some options of accommodation in Qatar in different locations, worth looking at, for your trip:

– Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel by Tivoli ($$$) : super charming boutique hotel located in Souq Waqif, the oldest bazaar in the city and one of the most central and touristy spots in Doha. From there, you can easily get to other parts of Doha by metro, bus, and cab.

– The Wyndham ($$) : A great hotel with a more classic design, located in Westbay, one of the most modern and sophisticated areas of Doha. This is where many of the city’s bars, shopping malls, and international restaurants are located. Westbay is on the coast and also has a subway.

– Premier Inn Doha Airport ($) : Basic classic hotel, close to the airport and the metro. This is a great option for those who have only one night in Doha, for example.

How much does the Qatar desert safari cost?

The Qatari desert tour costs about R$ 350 , and there is also the possibility of private tours!

We did our tour with OceanAir , which we already knew from our desert tour in Dubai. We really liked their service!

Traveling with children and/or seniors

If you are doing this trip as a family, I recommend choosing a car just for your family. That way you will have much more control over the level of maneuvering.

Although we did not feel in danger at any point, some of the drives down the dunes were quite steep. One of our friends, for example, had already been in a car accident and was a bit apprehensive at times because of the trauma.

Therefore, if you are travelling with small children and/or the elderly, it might be worthwhile to reserve an entire car just for your family so that you can decide the level of the adventure. With other unknown people in the car, it is more difficult to dictate the pace of the tour.

Another desert tour in Qatar , more alternative, and that we loved doing, was to the art installations by the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The work, called “ Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day “. It is located in a desert portion of northern Qatar, 1.5 hours from Doha.

The artwork is on the side of the road. It is possible to rent a car in Doha and visit by your own, without the need for a guide or a 4×4. A Desert Safari in Qatar

This is a review of my four-hour desert safari in Qatar mid October. The trip included a camel ride, dune bashing, sandboarding, a visit to the famous inland sea (Khor Al-Adaid), and watching a sunset.

The Background

A desert safari is considered a must when visiting the Middle East, or countries with a desert. And, so, this is not my first desert experience.

My first was in Dubai a few years ago and then during this current three-country trip, I did a desert safari including a night’s stay in a desert camp while in Oman.

But on the last full day of my short stay in Qatar, I decided to try a desert safari once more.

The desert safari trip was to last four hours and consist of a camel ride, dune bashing, sand boarding and a visit to the famous inland sea (Khor Al-Adaid).

We left Doha around 2.30 pm and drove through the streets of the capital and then entered the countryside.

As it is everywhere, or almost everywhere, the countryside of Qatar looks quite different from the capital Doha. Gone were the skyrises and it was mostly flatland interspersed with mostly single-floor houses.

And then we made our first stop, about halfway between Doha and the inland sea. The stop was for the camel ride. A dozen or so camels seated on the sand and bellowing through their nose caps, seemingly impatient.

Heights coupled with unsteady movements atop any slow or fast moving animal make me somewhat anxious as it had happened before during an elephant ride so I decided to skip the ride. I let the others mount the animals, sit atop the mahawis and then go on that short ride, accompanied by the camel pullers.

I enjoyed a good cup of Qatari tea, the karak tea. In the meantime, our tires got deflated.

Once the camel rides were done, we got into our 4×4 and raced towards the desert.

The Dune Bashing

This certainly can be considered as the highlight of the tour.

Landscape-wise, deserts look like, well, deserted places, devoid of any beauty. But it is far from the truth. There is much life in the deserts. There are living organisms that have adapted to the dry, shadeless conditions but the landscape without luxurious greenery itself is a beauty.

Deserts can be flat or full of dunes of sand piled up by the wind. They form a rich landscape with mini-hills and a range of colors – from light yellow to golden to almost dark orange.

From the distance, one can also notice tracks of 4×4 crisscrossing the expansive landscape. At a closer look, one can feel the loose sand getting into the clothes, shoes and, if one is not careful, even the eyes.

A desert safari means driving on the dunes and the flat lands.

But it is not as easy as it sounds. When I went on the dune bashing trip in Oman, our guide/driver Khair rode up closer to a dune but hesitated at its foot. “It might be too dangerous,” he pondered, and then he explained. If the incline is too steep and he does not handle the “angle of attack” and the needed speed issue correctly, there was every chance the truck will hit the mound head-on instead of driving up.

Some people do actually get motion sickness during dune bashing. In my previous ride in the desert in Dubai one passenger got sick and fortunately I had some Gravol. I have also been advised that should I get motion sickness, I should keep looking at the horizon and not in the immediate vicinity where all the climbing up and down takes place.

Fortunately, I don’t feel motion sickness or that churning of the stomach during dune bashing.

In the Hands of an Expert Driver

Our driver-guide Naufan was from the Indian state of Kerala. He told us he had been doing this run for many years, often twice a day. He was very casual with his driving but he knew these tracks and his vehicle well.

Naufan knew the driving angle and the speed that he needs to gain the correct momentum to race to the top without getting stuck, and then slow down so that the 4×4 will not tumble down. All the while, he also had to ensure the passengers inside had enough adrenaline-pumping fun while not too scared.

Sometimes he would race up in such a speed that the vehicle would partially be enveloped by the stirred up sand.

And then there were moments when he scaled the mound at such close quarters to one edge that those like me seated on that side had those almost eye closing moments – for fear that a few inches more on that side and the vehicle would tumble down on its side along the precipice.

But all was well.

Sandboarding

After the dune bash, we made our second stop, for some sandboarding.

Sandboarding is fundamentally a version of snowboarding, skating or surfing. One uses the equipment, a fine-tuned board, to surf through surfaces that are at various degrees of inclination. The difference is that one does sand boarding on (sand) dunes.

Some claim ancient Egyptians practiced sandboarding to ferry goods, but others claim it only started sometime mid-20 th century.

The point where we stood was atop a dune and there was a steep incline ending on a short flat landing surface.

Driver-Guide Naufan Looks at the Sandboarding Site

Again, my intention was to pass this on as well. Speeding through an inclination makes me anxious and whenever I do ziplining, which I love, I close my eyes for the first few seconds.

Here, the landing was short but my worry was actually what was beyond the short flat surface. There was another what appeared to be a steep incline and then water. Naufan told me the water was just a couple of feet deep. But I still wasn’t ready to do sandboarding on my feet.

But I wanted the adventure, so I took the easiest way out – sitting on the board and sliding. And that was fun, though the cautious side of me took over by putting out my legs well in advance to brake.

And then climbing back to the top of the mound was an exercise that had many panting.

Once we completed the sandboarding, we continued our trip with more dune bashing before heading to the inland sea.

The Inland Sea

The inland sea, Khor Al-Adaid, is a wonder of the nature. An inland sea is typically a large body of water either landlocked or connected to a sea via a narrow stretch of water with varying degrees of salinity.

And in Khor Al-Adaid’s case, its salinity is higher than the Persian Gulf with which is connected.

What is so amazing about this inland sea, which borders Saudi Arabia, is that it is hugged by desert and sand dunes, something unseen anywhere else. And this UNESCO recognized nature reserve is rich in bio-diversity, from different fish species to Arabian oryx and gazelles.

And for this reason, this is a popular tourist spot, particularly during the winter months. It can be accessed only by a 4×4.

Compared to the previous stages of this tour – the camel riding, dune bashing and sand boarding – this was a tame affair, with just walking around and dipping your feet in the water. We did not get into the water itself.

But in the distant, the sun was setting and soon it became crimson red before disappearing behind the horizon.

And then it was time to return to the hotel, ending the four-hour desert safari in Qatar.

Today, this tradition remains embedded in Qatari culture , with the annual winter camping season or Al Enna, whereby locals venture to the desert in elaborate camps, returning to the land. The desert is an integral part of local culture, and boasts a surprising array of activities. From relaxing tent side to dune-bashing or parasailing, the desert is anything but beige.

The impressive 'Inland Sea' or Khor Al Adaid, a UNESCO recognized site, lies to the south of the city, and is one of the few places in the world where the sea encroaches into the desert. For a truly authentic desert experience , nothing beats a camel ride over the soft dunes, before embarking on an exhilarating desert safari over the dunes to Khor Al Adaid, accessible only by 4x4 vehicles. Overnight Desert Safari

Marvel at breathtaking landscapes & seascapes with excursions to Khor Al Udeid (the inland sea) near the Qatar-Saudi Arabian border. Experience star gazing in the cool desert night! *Rate is per person based on five pax.

Your desert adventure begins as soon as you are picked up from designated points in the city. You will be driven 75 km south of Doha taking in the sights of the city, its suburbs and countryside along the way. Following a brief stop at Sealine Beach in Meisaeed, where our professional drivers will first deflate the tires to make sure the vehicle is ready for the dune bashing, we abandon the boring tarmac for the exhilarating and breath-taking, roller-coaster drives across the desert. The crossing of the desert is a real adventure in itself and an event to remember. You can decide on the kind of ride you want – fast and bumpy or a smooth and casual one. The drive will take you to the spectacular inland sea of Khor al-Udeid with its white sandy beaches and pristine, crystal-clear water near the Qatar-Saudi Arabian border. There will be two stops during the journey for picture-taking sessions to help you keep the memories of your desert adventure alive.

Stop at our unique, purpose-built Arabian Adventures Qatar Bedouin Camp near Khor Al-Udeid where you can enjoy a swim, sandboarding, and a game of beach volleyball.

Later on in the evening, enjoy a full barbecue meal at our campsite while star gazing in the cool desert night and appreciating the beauty of our universe. After a long day, retire into the night and savor the unique experience of sleeping in our Bedouin Camp. Breakfast is served the following morning before we embark on the journey back to the city.

Please note : Do not leave your valuable belongings unattended, it is under your responsibility.
